This throwback episode from 2023 features Dr. Meylinda Meredith. Zach and Kevin sit down with Meylinda, a fellow UMKC dental school alumnus and current clinical faculty member teaching operative dentistry. They dive into a fascinating discussion comparing private practice associateships with a career in dental education, exploring everything from the perks of academic vacation time to the unique traits of Gen Z dental students and how "just-in-time" learning changes the way they absorb material. The trio also discusses the modern integration of digital scanning versus traditional PVS impressions in a dental school setting, before wrapping up with a fun round of UMKC dental trivia. We welcome in two special guests, Jamogi and Streetcar Donna! After three years of hard work and determination, Jamogi's new album “J'Day” was just released on June 12. She's been busy with the opening of the streetcar expansion to the south to UMKC, and now to the north to KC Current's CPKC Stadium. She'll stop by to talk about a new concert series collaboration with Manor Records called Streetcar Sounds. The series runs June 17 to July 8. The very first act to play the series will be Jamogi on June 17 at the Riverfront stop near CPKC Stadium/Current Landing. It should be a fun show. Hopefully we'll hear music from these folks featured on Jamogi's album or acts playing the Streetcar Sounds Concert Series on the show: Les Izmore, FlareThaRebel, The Swallowtails, Jazlyn Epps, The Royal Chief, and Broderick Jones.
Artspeak Radio, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 9am -10am CST, 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio, streaming live audio www.kkfi.org Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes Tom Mardikes, Jon Robertson, and Scott Preston. Sound Mandala is a one-of-a-kind immersive audio experience where 100 independent loudspeakers surround you—sound moving around you, above you, and through you. This isn't surround sound. It's something altogether different, carefully crafted by sound designers who spend hours mixing each piece moving the sound around you, above you, and beneath you. Audio becomes a physical environment you can step inside – you feel it as much as you hear it. We call it a Mecca concept — you can't stream it, download it, or replicate it anywhere else. You have to be there. TOM MARDIKES & JON ROBERTSON- Sound Mandala Summer 2026 runs June 10 – August 1 presented at Unicorn Theatre; tickets on sale May 1 Sound Mandala is back and this summer, it's bigger than ever. The groundbreaking immersive audio experience returns to the Unicorn Theatre's Jerome Stage June 10 through August 1, 2026, with three original programs that push the boundaries of what sound can do to a room and to the people inside it. Tickets at www.soundmandala.org/experience. Sound Mandala's summer run coincides with Kansas City's moment on the world stage as a 2026 FIFA World Cup host city and overlaps with the KC Fringe Festival, positioning it as a must-see cultural destination for international visitors and locals alike. At the heart of the experience: a custom-built array of 100 independent loudspeakers surrounding audiences on all sides — above them, beside them, moving through them. Programs are complex mixes of recording done by our artists, using their original tracks. "This is an experience that simply cannot be duplicated anywhere else," said creator and founder Tom Mardikes. "To experience it, you have to be there." Sound Mandala made its public debut at the 2024 KC Fringe Festival, where over 9 days more than 800 people experienced the installation. The creative team draws from artists and designers affiliated with UMKC Conservatory's Sound Design MFA program, and the project has grown from the research of UMKC professor Tom Mardikes over many years. Sound Mandala Institute, Inc. is a Kansas City–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. For history, technology, and more: www.soundmandala.org THE 2026 PROGRAMS Signal&Soul | June 10 – August 1 The flagship variety program, and Sound Mandala at its most kaleidoscopic. Roughly 50 minutes, 10 pieces, zero filler. Signal&Soul collides original music, theatrical performance, beatboxing, spoken word, and unexpected reinvention into a single, propulsive arc. Featured works include The Missionary by acclaimed KC artist Krizz Kaliko; an original composition by Austen Schober; a video game collage from Jacob Souders and Paul Vedros; a Chekhov vignette performed by Vanessa Severo; beatboxer Luke "Skippy" Harbur of musicbyskippy; MU by audio artist Rev. Dwight Frizzell; a new piece by Jon Robertson; and a Sound Mandala reimagining of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" that has to be heard to be believed. Indie Spotlight from Challenger Artists | June 20 – August 1 Five bands. Two songs each. Original multi-track recordings mixed into an immersive system that will change how you hear them. Challenger Artists has assembled a remarkable roster for this approximately 60-minute set conceived specifically for the Sound Mandala environment. Featuring: Mini Trees, the indie-alt pop project of LA-based songwriter Lexi Vega, whose 2025 headline tour sold out venues coast to coast; Brooklyn duo TOLEDO; Valley Boy, whose collaborators include Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, and Troye Sivan; Midwest four-piece Post Sex Nachos, whose track "SOS" climbed to the SiriusXM Alt Nation Top 6; and Chicago indie act Capital Soiree, featured on Spotify's Fresh Finds editorial playlists. Unicorn Theatre | Jerome Stage 3828 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64111 Tom Mardikes has worked on over 250 professional productions nationwide as Sound Designer for Kansas City Repertory Theatre (formerly Missouri Rep), the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, the Dallas Theatre Center, Syracuse Stage, Coconut Grove, the Roundabout, Buffalo Studio Arena, the Alley Theatre, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Jon Robertson A Kansas City-based sound designer and composer, honed his skills during the pandemic to improve online audio collaboration. In 2021, he co-created the audio tool, Tutti Remote, facilitating global audio syncing for performers. His work spans theatrical productions, films, and radio plays, earning recognition at festivals like New Music Gathering and KC Fringe. An educator at heart, Jon currently teaches at the University of Evansville and boasts degrees from UMKC and the University of Arizona. Jon has been working with the Sound Mandala since 2015. The Sound Mandala is a new way of listening to recorded sounds, in a room full of loudspeakers arranged in a matrix allowing for a wide variety of sound distribution and motion. In the auditory domain, the Sound Mandala imitates the visual trick of film motion by placing dozens of loudspeakers into a space organized into a matrix of lines and rows, then dividing, or spreading a sound along these lines and rows to create a sinuous ‘motion' of sound. This summer the Sound Mandala will present a new show at the Unicorn Theatre as well as joining the KC Fringe Festival 2026, featuring a 100-loudspeaker channel system in the Jerome black box theatre seating 40 people. We refer to the Sound Mandala as a ‘Mecca-concept'----you must go there to have the experience. As this invention becomes commercialized and we experiment with visual images, this Mecca-concept will be a decided advantage to a film presenter---an advantage movie theatres do not enjoy today. The Sound Mandala experience cannot be duplicated in the home or in a car. When You Walk In... • An Acoustic Sanctuary: You'll step into an intimate theater environment wrapped in an array of dozens of individual loudspeakers. • Perfect Sound, Every Seat: Unlike standard concert venues or movie theaters where the best sound is only in the exact center, the Sound Mandala is designed so that every seat is the best seat in the house. • A Journey for the Senses: You will sit back, relax, and let custom-composed music, vivid soundscapes, and acoustic narratives wash over your senses and move right through you. SCOTT PRESTON-The Traveling Hippo is a children's book that encourages family travel traditions, featuring a narrator and seven characters who guide families in taking a stuffed hippo on vacation to create memories. The book, which includes a travel log and illustrations by Preston's daughter, Lilly, is part of a larger "Hippo Universe" that includes merchandise like plushies and trading cards, and it aims to be more than just a story but a family activity. Key aspects of the book and tradition: • Concept: Families bring a stuffed hippo on trips, using the book as a guide and a travel journal to record their adventures. • Characters: The story features a narrator, Hammy the bird, and other characters that help explain the tradition. • Family involvement: The project is a family affair, with Preston's daughter Lilly doing illustrations and his son helping with the website. • Origin: The tradition started with the author's own children using a hippo from a discount store on their trips. • Merchandise: The "Hippo Universe" includes the book, plush toys, and other items, with plans for more books and products. • Awards: It was a finalist in the 2026 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

So much buildup and so little sizzle as Mayor Q is a panelist on CBS Face the Nation and I'm really disappointed. We were hoping he'd be asked about KC being the per capita homeless capital of America or his police chief declaring "drastic" measures to cutback the force because the budget is whacked. Instead, he almost got edited out completely. The word around the cowtown is the Chiefs will be announcing the exact location of their new stadium this week... we'll tell you where the smart money is. Meanwhile, the Royals say they will be announcing their decision sooner than later where they are going. NBA coach Steve Kerr has been forced to apologize for his outrageous lies about the Trump administration and ICE. It was real. But another coach won't back off and is worried ICE will start kidnapping international players and sending them home. What a fool. KU star Darryn Peterson sits again after KU built a huge lead over BYU. He's healthy for tonight's game so maybe this was something else. I have a new theory. Mark Turgeon is the new basketball coach at Kansas City (UMKC) and this is a great hire. Goalies throw down at center ice and one of the world's most famous musicians makes a video in the middle of the Tallgrass Prairie reserve in the Flint Hills.

For the Glory KC is back with the 155th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City and the KC Current did literally nothing this week, so we are filling in with offseason content!Sheena and I did our first ever "For the Glory KC Awards" and gave out many fake prizes to players on both teams. From MVP to Newcomer of the year to strange categories like best hair and best personality. There are the awards you'd expect and everything in between. We also asked the question, which is more shocking? Peter Vermes getting fired with nearly four years left on his contract or Vlatko Andonovski stepping down unexpectedly after the greatest regular season in NWSL history?Speaking of Vermes, he was reported to be up for the Atlanta United job that ultimately went to Tata Martino. Which left the question, where should Peter land if he stays in MLS? There are only a few jobs left open and the New York Red Bulls one looks like it's going to Michael Bradley (according to Tom Bogert of the Athletic). So that only left open the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (soon enough), St. Louis City and of course Sporting KC.In addition to picking Vermes' landing spot, we ponder the question of how nervous should we be that Sporting KC still only have 14 signed players and no coach with preseason set to start in just over five weeks on January 10th?We also cover the news about Kansas City and the 2031 Women's World Cup, Bia Zaneratto possibly heading to Brazil and a lot of USWNT news for the full team, U-23s and U-20s.In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:MLS Cup where everyone is rooting for Vancouver over MiamiThe 2028 Copa America maybe coming to the USAPhoenix possibly landing MLS and NWSL expansion teamsand UMKC's NCAA Tournament fateHere is a rundown of topics and start times:End of Year Awards - 3:22Sporting KC roster, coach and Vermes' fate - 47:222031 WWC Update - 56:28KC Current roundup - 1:04:12She Scores - 1:06:35Digital Crawl - 1:17:31Upcoming GamesMLS Cup: Vancouver Whitecaps vs Inter Miami, Saturday, Dec. 6th at 1:30PM CSTWorld Sevens Football TourneyWomen's College Cup (CPKC Stadium)As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. For the Glory KC is back with the 154th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City were back in the news with the earliest schedule release in recent memory. And it's a compressed schedule with the 2026 World Cup causing a nearly two-month break. Sheena and I give our thoughts on the all the midweek games, particularly the two St. Louis City SC games being midweek. We also try to figure out the best road trips for us and for everyone else. It's the last full year of the schedule under the current system, before the sprint season in 2027 and the full schedule change for the 2027-28 season. We have some concerns based on how this one was built. The KC Current didn't make quite as much news (but there was some). Before that though, we pretend to be the Sporting Director and try to decide on just eight roster moves. Move aside Vlatko (j/k). Most of the team is back in 2026 and the team should be quite good. The standouts we have to decide on are Bia and Elizabeth Ball since Hailie Mace already announced her departure. Everyone else is further down the depth chart or a young player looking to break through. In other Kansas City Current news, we talk about their first game of 2026 (it's before Sporting KC's), the wins and snubs at the NWSL awards and about a bunch of international call-ups.Perhaps the biggest story of the week is that of the Kansas Astras, formerly the KC Astras. Due to a decision either by the KC Comets or the MASLW, they will not be allowed to play in KC or use "Kansas City" in their name. We give all the details we know about the unfolding situation. Finally, Sheena introduces a new, as of yet untitled segment on women's sports, even beyond soccer (though there is plenty of soccer). It'll probably exist outside this podcast in the future, but in what form is unclear. We're open to your suggestions! In the Digital Crawl, we hit on a few more topics, including:UMKC men's soccerUSL Champions crownedUnion Omaha announces their stadiumWild Vancouver Whitecaps vs. LAFC gameHere is a rundown of topics and start times:Sporting KC schedule release - 4:56KC Current Fantasy Sporting Director - 37:16Current news, including their first game of 2026 - 51:13The story of the Kansas Astras - 1:10:41Sheena's new segment - 1:22:54Digital Crawl - 1:41:27Upcoming GamesUSWNT vs Italy, Friday, November 28th at 6:00PM CSTUSWNT vs. Italy, Monday, December 1st at 6:00PMMore MLS Cup Playoff games! As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. This episode is sponsored by University Health. Cervical cancer is relatively common. The American Cancer Society estimates over 13-thousand new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in 2025. On today's episode, we're joined by Dr. Blair Smith, a gynecologic oncologist at University Health and Assistant Professor at UMKC School of Medicine. She's not only an expert in treating women's cancers, but also a compassionate guide for patients facing some of the hardest questions of their lives. In this episode, Dr. Smith walks us through: What it means to be a gynecologic oncologist and why she chose this path. Why she compares cancer treatment to managing chronic diseases like diabetes. The most common questions patients ask—about treatment, fertility, intimacy, insurance, and even how to talk about major life milestones. How she helps women find clarity, hope, and confidence as they navigate their care. Join us for an honest, down-to-earth conversation about medicine, resilience, and the human side of cancer care. Meet Dr. Blair Smith Dr. Blair Smith, M.D. is a board-certified, fellowship-trained gynecologic oncologist at University Health in Kansas City and an Assistant Professor at the UMKC School of Medicine. She specializes in cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancers, and provides advanced care through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, robotic-assisted procedures, and cancer counseling. Dr. Smith treats patients at University Health Women's Care locations in both downtown Kansas City and Lee's Summit, and she is also affiliated with Research Medical Center and the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute. Dr. Smith earned her medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine before completing both her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and her fellowship in gynecologic oncology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Today, she combines her clinical expertise with her academic role at UMKC, where she mentors medical students and residents, preparing the next generation of physicians to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care. Known for her honesty and empathy, Dr. Smith emphasizes open communication with patients, believing that transparency helps them prepare, plan, and face their diagnosis with greater peace of mind. She often compares advances in cancer care to the management of other chronic diseases, noting that with modern treatments, many women are living longer, fuller lives after a diagnosis. Dr. Smith accepts a wide range of insurance plans and is committed to making cancer care as accessible as possible for patients in the Kansas City community. Above all, she is recognized for her patient-centered approach, her dedication to women's health, and her ability to bring both clarity and hope to women and families navigating some of life's most difficult challenges.
