In this episode, I get to sit down with Peter Martin of Third Coast Percussion, an ensemble I have admired for years. Peter and I dive into the inner world of a percussion quartet that tours the globe, creates new music, commissions major composers, collaborates with artists across genres, and somehow still manages to pack an unbelievable amount of gear into checked luggage.Peter had just returned from Paris, where the ensemble performed Philip Glass's August Amazonia Suite alongside a live painter, something they had never done before. From there, we talk about what it truly takes to tour as a percussion group, how they travel with twelve checked bags of instruments, how backlining works, what happens when a vibraphone arrives broken, and why they think about portability and footprint even before a new piece is written.Peter shares his personal journey from military-kid piano lessons to discovering the drum set, jazz vibraphone, and eventually falling in love with the marimba. We talk about his time studying with Michael Burritt at Northwestern, crossing paths with Brett Dietz and William James, and the surreal experience of watching his classmates become lifelong colleagues in orchestras, universities, and ensembles across the world. We also talk about the remarkable story of Third Coast Percussion itself, from its beginnings in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago to becoming a full-time, artist-run organization. Peter explains what it really means to run a chamber group from the ground up, how he unexpectedly became the ensemble's finance director, and why having control of the administrative side gives them total artistic freedom. Then we dig into the ensemble's Grammy win for their Steve Reich album, including the thrill of performing on the telecast and the artistic decisions behind putting their own interpretive stamp on such iconic repertoire. Peter describes what it was like working with producer Jesse Lewis and why that collaboration changed how they approached recording forever.Peter also talks about the emotional experience of recording Murmurs in Time with the legendary Zakir Hussain, who passed away shortly after the sessions. Hearing Peter reflect on Zakir's musicianship, generosity, and spirit is profoundly moving. We wrap with a look at what lies ahead for Third Coast Percussion, from new commissions to international touring to upcoming collaborations, including the premiere of a new work with Jlin. As Peter says, there is never a month when the ensemble is not creating something new, and their passion for pushing percussion forward is unmistakable. It was an honor to talk with Peter and get an inside look at the ensemble's artistry, work ethic, creativity, and humanity. Third Coast Percussion continues to redefine what chamber music can be, and I am grateful to share their story with you.To learn more about Third Coast Percussion, visit their website. Third Coast Percussion is a Grammy-winning classical quartet based in Chicago. They're all composers themselves, but they've also worked with a wide variety of other composers, including Philip Glass and the late great tabla player Zakir Hussain. Their new EP, Murmurs In Time, features Zakir's work of that name, and he was supposed to join Third Coast Percussion here today, but as you may know, he passed away in December. This Soundcheck studio premiere of the work features a disciple of Hussain's, Salar Nader. We'll also hear an excerpt from another work written for Third Coast Percussion, by Tigran Hamasyan, the Armenian jazz pianist and composer. Oh – and it's in 23/8, for anyone counting along. (-John Schaefer) Set list: 1. Tigran Hamasyan – Sonata for Percussion, 3rd Mvmt. – “23 for TCP” 2. Zakir Hussain: Murmurs In Time – second mvmt.

The serene spaces of contemplative minimalism have attracted some strange bedfellows over the years, including classical, new music, and experimental composers, serious jazz artists, ambient-electronic sound sculptors, and native musicians from the far north. They share a taste for consonance, repetition, slow tempos, electro-acoustic instrumentation, and expanded ambience. In these vast, frigid spaces, time seems to slow and even stop. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, timeless soundscapes inspired by the Arctic North, on a program called "FROZEN TIME." Music is by CHRISTEL VERAART, JEFF GREINKE, TIGRAN HAMASYAN, JOHN LUTHER ADAMS, MICHAEL JON FINK, SOMEI SATOH, and OLAFUR ARNALDS. Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists/composers of his generation. A piano virtuoso with groove power, Hamasyan seamlessly fuses potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, his musical journey began in his childhood home, where he was exposed to a diverse array of musical influences leading to him playing piano at the age of three, performing in festivals and competitions by the time he was eleven, and winning the Montreux Jazz Festival's piano competition in 2003. He released his debut album, World Passion, in 2004 at the age of seventeen. The following year, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Additional albums include New Era; Red Hail; A Fable, for which he was awarded a Victoires de la Musique (the equivalent of a Grammy Award in France); Shadow Theater; and Luys i Luso which featured the Yerevan State Chamber Choir focusing on Armenian sacred music stretching stylistically from the 5th century to the 20th century. His Nonesuch debut, Mockroot (2015), won the Echo Jazz Award for International Piano Instrumentalist of the Year; subsequent records for the label include An Ancient Observer (2017) the companion EP, For Gymuri (2018), Revisiting the Film (2021) and most recently StandArt (2022). Hamasyan was awarded the Deutscher Jazzpreis international category in Piano/Keyboards in 2021. Hamasyan has released records on France's Plus Loins, Universal France, Nonesuch and ECM. Hamasyan's new conceptual album “The Bird of a Thousand Voices” was released in August 2024 on Naïve/Believe – his debut with the label. Tigran composed, scored, and arranged the much-anticipated project blending its traditional folk footprints with rock influences. The first single from the album “The Kingdom” can also be experienced as an interactive game at www.bird1000.com. The recently released double album is inspired by an ancient Armenian tale in which a hero travels into unseen realms to find and bring back a mythical bird – whose thousand different songs will awaken people again and bring harmony to the world. The transmedia music theater piece ‘The Bird of a Thousand Voices', an intriguing immersive light installation with shadow play, digitally programmed voices, live music, and an Armenian-English libretto, premiered at the Holland Festival in June 2024. In addition to awards and critical acclaim, Hamasyan has built a dedicated following worldwide, as well as praise from Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau and the late Chick Corea. “With startling combinations of jazz, minimalist, electronic, folk and songwriterly elements…Hamasyan and his collaborators travel musical expanses marked with heavy grooves, ethereal voices, pristine piano playing and ancient melodies. You'll hear nothing else like this” (NPR)

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Nate Wood. Nate can do it all…and he can do it all at once. In his solo project fOUR, he sings / plays bass/keys/drums all at the same time. Wow. But throughout his career, he's been involving in so many projects including Kneebody, Wayne Krantz, George Harrison, Tigran Hamasyan, Louis Cole, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, Sting…incredible. It was truly and honor talking to him and I hope you enjoy the 5 records that shaped Nate Wood in the musician he is today. Cheers! As promised...check out the video of Marcus Gilmore HERE. Jay remembers the great Naomi Judd, who passed last week at the age of 76. The matriarch of the mother-daughter country group “The Judds”, Naomi was a driven and talented artist who struggled with severe depression near the end of her life. She became an advocate for mental illness and was inducted the day after her passing to the Country Music Hall of Fame.Songs:Lizzo - “About Damn Time”The Judds - “Mama, He's Crazy”The Judds - “Rompin', Stompin' Bad News Blues”Nick brings us the latest from Tigran Hamasyan, an album of jazz standards called “StandArt”. Hamasyan's frenetic energy is on full display and his liberal melodic interpretations of the standards chosen seem to have upset his interviewer over at Bandcamp. You be the judge and let us know what you think!Songs:Tigran Hamasyan - “Big Foot”Elmo Hope - “De-Dah”Tigran Hamasyan - “De-Dah”Ella Fitzgerald - “Laura”Charles Mingus - “Laura”Tigran Hamasyan - “Laura”Greg's got a new bit! Touring across the country, there's a lot of old historic venues that have amazing stories waiting to be told! Welcome to “BienVenue”, this week we learn about a little gem in Bloomington, Indiana. The Bluebird, capacity ~750 and about 5 blocks from Indiana University Bloomington, has a great atmosphere (even on Dollar beer nights!). It's also hosted some pretty impressive acts over the years, in part because of it's location between St. Louis & Cincinnati. Most important, it's managed to stay open through the pandemic and for that we're grateful!Songs:Lou Reed & John Mellancamp - “Walk On The Wild Side - Live 1987”Dawes - “Most People - Live 2013”Sturgill Simpson - “I Never Go Around Mirrors - Live 2017”
Vocalist Areni Agbabian is an experimental improviser, folk and sacred music singer, and pianist. As a vocalist she has worked in new opera, dance, contemporary jazz, new music and multi-media performance. In fact, I first met Areni a decade ago during a course at the School of Improvised Music in Brooklyn, New York. We remained in touch and met up again in Paris in 2014 when she was there studying sacred Armenian music (and I was just eating croissants and ogling Parisian architecture). Her sublime work with the Tigran Hamasyan quintet saw her touring internationally and lending her voice to several of his early recordings that put him on the map. In 2019 Areni made her leader debut on the storied ECM Records with her album “Bloom”.
