Título: A Ferro!

About Conrad: New York jazz artist CONRAD HERWIG has recorded nearly 30 albums as a leader, receiving four GRAMMY®-nominations for his own projects. His latest CD release is The Latin Side of McCoy Tyner (Savant; 2024). This albums marks 27+ years of the “Latin Side . . .” series, and is a follow-up project to The “Latin Side of ...” tributes to Charles Mingus (Savant 2022), Horace Silver (Savant; 2020), Joe Henderson (Half Note; 2014), Herbie Hancock (Half Note;2010) Wayne Shorter (Half Note; 2008), Miles Davis (Half Note; 2004), and John Coltrane (Astor Place; 1996). These exciting and individualized projects feature an array of special guests including Randy Brecker, Ruben Blades, Michel Camilo, Joe Lovano, Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D'Rivera, Dave Valentin and many of the hottest players on the international scene. Herwig is equally facile in a non-Latin arena. He has been voted #1 Jazz Trombonist in DownBeat Magazine “Jazz Critic's Poll” and nominated for “Trombonist of the Year” by the JazzJournalists Association on numerous occasions. In constant demand as a sideman, Herwig has performed with Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, and Joe Lovano (featured as a soloist on Lovano's GRAMMY® Award winning 52nd St. Themes CD). In the Afro-Caribbean genre he has toured with legends such as Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, and Michel Camilo. He is a longtime member of the the Mingus Big Band (where he has served as musical director and arranger including on the 2011 GRAMMY®-winning “Live at the Jazz Standard”). In other big band settings Herwig has also performed and recorded with Clark Terry, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis & Quincy Jones, and the Gil Evans Orchestra. All told Herwig has appeared on more than 200+ albums in what is now a 40 year career. In 2006 Herwig received the Paul Acket Award (formerly the “Bird Award”). The prize, presented at the North Sea Jazz Festival, is intended for an artist who, according to the international jury, deserves the attention of a broader audience. Herwig is also a recipient of performance and teaching grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Conrad was elected to the Board of Advisors of the International Trombone Association and has taught at Mason Gross School of the Arts in the prestigious jazz program at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. where he currently serves as Artistic Director and Chair of Jazz Studies.

Pianist Horace Silver, born September 2, 1928, in Connecticut, played tenor saxophone and piano in school, and received his first national recognition when his trio was hired to play with saxophonist Stan Getz in 1950. His career received a major boost when he became part of the original Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey, and recorded his first hit composition, The Preacher. He toured with Blakey until 1956, when he left to start his own quintet, which featured his prolific compositional talents, and launched the careers of numerous younger players over the ensuing decades. He is one of the musicians credited with launching the hard bop style.

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an iconic album by pianist/composer Horace Silver entitled "The Tokyo Blues". It is a series of new compositions by Silver commemorating his first trip to Japan as a bandleader. His long standing quintet here has Richard "Blue" Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass and a very worthy substitute for an ailing Roy Brooks (Horace's regular drummer) in John Harris Jr. and of course Horace Silver on piano. The band as usual is tight and very inspired on this date made in July of 1962. Four of the five compositions are new and written by Silver and a lovely trio track contrasts with the full band tunes and it was written by a friend of Horace's, pianist Ronnell Bright and called "Cherry Blossom". "The Tokyo Blues" is one of Horace Silver's finest albums and is tonight's Jazz Feature.

Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley (born July 7, 1930) was described as the “Middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone” by critic Leonard Feather, but most musicians think he punched well above that weight class. His career included stints with Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Max Roach and Miles Davis as well as over thirty recordings as a bandleader in his own right. Many of his compositions have become jazz standards, and his soulful and lyrical solos stood out every time he played his horn.

When Ron Carter's name comes up, one of the first things people write or say is – he's played bass and cello on over 2500 albums. That's impressive and awe-inspiring. Totally agree. When I hear the name Ron Carter I think of the bassist who played in Miles Davis' second band, alongside Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams & George Coleman. “The List” of bands and recordings would include Wayne Shorter, Blue Note recordings with Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, and 100's of others. I talked to Ron about his recordings in popular music.  Roberta Flack, Eddie Harris, Aretha, Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Erykah Badu, A tribe called Quest, Phoebe Snow, The Rascals, Gil Scott-Heron, Carlos Santana. Ron has taught music for many years at esteemed colleges and schools, his current documentary is Finding the Right Notes, also the name of his bio book. Ron Carter turns 87 years old today – Saturday, May 4 !!  we wish him WELL. Enjoy the conversation – I sure did.

Jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson was born on April 25, 1937 in Ohio. Following his stint in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962, Henderson made his way to New York City, where he crossed paths with fellow saxophonist Dexter Gordon. Joining Gordon's band proved pivotal for Henderson's career, exposing him to diverse musical influences including bebop, R&B, and Latin styles. Henderson's breakthrough arrived with a standout solo on Horace Silver's popular track, "Song for My Father." This led to a deal with Blue Note Records, featuring a remarkable 30 albums from 1963 to 1968.  Throughout his career, Henderson collaborated with jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, as well as the rock ensemble Blood, Sweat & Tears.  In 2001, Henderson died at 64 years old. Saxophonist/composer Joe Henderson (born April 24, 1937) was an eclectic performer, recording over thirty albums on Blue Note records, raging from straight ahead sessions with Horace Silver to more avant-guard outings with Andrew Hill, always sounding like himself in every setting. He recorded with Herbie Hancock and even spent a period of time with Blood, Sweat and Tears. The bulk of the material we'll play is drawn from the seminal recordings he made with trumpeter Kenny Dorham in the 1960s, many of the tunes this group recorded have become jazz standards.

Now, I have a whole bunch of actual solutions to actual problems. In today's episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of speaking with Rick DellaRatta, the visionary founder of Jazz for Peace. Rick's insights into the power of music as a universal language for fostering peace and unity struck a deep chord with me and, I believe, with our listeners as well.Rick poetically expressed how "Jazz for Peace, coming through the trees, fills my heart like a celebration." This imagery captures the essence of what Rick has achieved through his work—using the universal appeal of jazz music to bridge divides, inspire hope, and foster a deeper connection among people, irrespective of their backgrounds.During our conversation, Rick recounted an incredibly moving experience in Ghana, where he performed for individuals who had never been exposed to jazz music before. His reflections on their genuine, unfiltered reactions to the music underscored the universal language of jazz. "It's funny because there's a video of it... and you can hear the people reacting to the music at certain points. They would start clapping and make sounds as it affected them, and they would just emote that it was affecting them," Rick shared. This experience in Ghana highlights the raw power of music to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, offering a glimpse into the potential of the arts to build bridges and foster understanding. Rick's commitment to using his art to "espouse, so to speak, for who you are as a person, your growth as a human being, and what it means to you to make a difference for others" is a testament to the transformative potential of integrating one's passions with a purpose greater than oneself.Rick's journey with Jazz for Peace is a beacon of hope, showing us how the arts can be a powerful catalyst for positive change. As we continue to navigate a world rife with challenges, Rick's work serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty that can arise when creativity, humanity, and a commitment to peace converge.AI Episode Summary1. People can learn more about Jazz for Peace and connect with Rick through the generic email address info@jazzforpeace.org, and his work focuses on empowerment grants and growing an "empowerment tree."How to Develop Transformative Solutions As a SuperpowerRick DellaRatta's superpower can be encapsulated in the phrase "transformative solutions."Rick's superpower lies in his ability to perceive adversity as an opportunity for improvement, a perspective that enables him to turn challenges into positive outcomes. Initially, this manifested in his talent for "making lemonade out of lemons" when aiding outstanding causes. Over time, this evolved into Rick possessing actionable solutions to significant global problems, garnered from his experiences and the wisdom shared by the numerous exceptional individuals and causes he's encountered. An illustrative story from the interview is Rick's account of bringing together Israeli, Palestinian, and American musicians in 2002 at the United Nations. This endeavor was part of his ongoing effort to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a commitment that has won him over a million impressions on LinkedIn from people interested in his solution to this longstanding issue. This story exemplifies how Rick uses his superpower to foster peace and understanding through music and dialogue. To develop a superpower akin to Rick's, one might embrace humanity, creativity, artistry, and intellectuality, thereby allowing the "cream to rise to the top." By bringing out the best in oneself, one can inspire others, finding common ground even in the most challenging situations. Music, or any universal language of peace, can be a vehicle for creating positive communication and understanding.By following Rick DellaRatta's example and advice, you can make transformative solutions a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Born in Santa Monica, California, Debbie Poryes found herself at the piano when she was five, practicing everything from Chopin to show tunes. Playing led to fascination with musical theory and structure, then jazz standards, composing, and improvising. Hearing Monk and Miles as a teenager, she fell in love with their music and decided to become a jazz pianist. At twenty, her first regular paying gig lasted a year at a Berkeley restaurant, playing five nights a week from 5 p.m. to midnight.Debbie has always gone her own way musically, even while maintaining a constant study through transcription and analysis of her favorite players and composers, such as Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Horace Silver, Hank Jones, Sonny Clark, and Clare Fischer. Drawn strongly to 20th century classical music, she has been influenced by many composers, including Aaron Copland and Norman Dello Joio. In her early years as a musician in Oakland, her passion led her to play frequently at jam sessions while continuing to study classical music and jazz with local players. She composed and arranged music, and produced her own concerts with her duos, trios and quartets in addition to freelancing with various local singers and bands. She has performed all over the San Francisco Bay Area notably, at the Stanford Jazz Festival, SFJazz, Yoshi's Jazzclub, the Berkeley Jazzschool, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and the Piedmont Piano Company. True to her beginnings, she still loves playing in restaurants and played twice-weekly for 6 years at the New Orleans-styled Oakland restaurant Pican, only stopping when the restaurant up and closed! A significant aspect to Debbie's musical life has been her experience with tendonitis in her wrists. In her thirties, pain forced her to stop playing for two years, during which time she explored many avenues of healing. A breakthrough came when she happened upon Dorothy Taubman's piano technique, which emphasized maintaining the natural coordination of the fingers, hand, and arm. Absorbing this new way of thinking, Debbie continues to study it with her teacher John Bloomfield in New York and pass it along to her grateful students. The injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it led not only to Debbie's development of a beautiful sound without harshness but also an ease and control she didn't have before. One has only to see Debbie play to appreciate how comfortable her hands are at the keyboard.Debbie felt the call to teach early in her career and continues to adore helping students understand jazz and further their own playing. Debbie has internet students around the globe in addition to her students at her home studio. She taught at the Berkeley Jazzschool for over 20 years as well as many summers at the Stanford Summer Jazz Program and has given presentations to the California Music Teachers' Association on how to teach jazz. In the summer of 2018 Debbie moved to Philadelphia. Her husband Tony Fels retired from his teaching job at the University of San Francisco and they, along with their daughter, returned to his hometown. She continues to teach her California and global students through the internet and is enjoying her new students and gigs in Philadelphia. Please visit  https://www.debbieporyes.com/ for Debbie's incredible website. The Golandsky Institute's mission is to provide cutting-edge instruction to pianists based on the groundbreaking work of Dorothy Taubman. Welcome to Episode #112 of "The Other Side of the Bell", a podcast brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. In this episode, John talks with Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell about their recently released album called "Homage" by the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble.  We hope you'll enjoy their conversation as well as the album. Join us at Dillon Music, November 9-11 for valve alignments and mouthpiece consultations. Email sales@dillonmusic to schedule an appointment! About the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Album "Homage"  The recording scene in Los Angeles has a long history of great and highly versatile trumpet playing. For the most part, though, these trumpet players rarely get a chance to be featured. In 1957, Tutti Camarata arranged and produced a record called Tutti's Trumpets that featured some of the top session trumpet players in Los Angeles at that time. That was over 60 years ago. Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell started talking about doing another recording that would feature some of the current session trumpet players here in Los Angeles. Wayne suggested recording a trumpet ensemble CD to Jeff and they loved the idea and thought a choir of trumpets would work well. With that, the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble came into being. In choosing the music Jeff arranged for this CD, he wanted to pay tribute to some of the film composers who are part of the Los Angeles recording scene (and who write so well for the trumpet), and also pay tribute to some of the great trumpet players of the past and present.  Jerry Hey graciously wrote the arrangment for the last track, the iconic Al Jarreau tune "Roof Garden". Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Members Jeff Bunnell Wayne Bergeron Jon Lewis Dan Fornero Marissa Benedict Dan Rosenboom Rob Schaer Larry Hall Dan Savant About Wayne Bergeron Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles but worldwide. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to California at age one. He originally started on French horn but switched to trumpet in seventh grade where he found a natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills. Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson.  Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.” As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a “who's who” in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. Other names include Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Indina Menzel, Leslie Oden Jr., Herb Alpert, The Jonas Brothers, Burt Bacharach, The Dirty Loops, Seth MacFarlane, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Seal, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, Christina Aguilera, Dianne Reeves, Michael Bolton, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pussy Cat Dolls, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, Chicago, Rosemary Cloony, Diane Schuur, Barry Manilow, Lee Ann Womack, Lou Rawls, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G., and David Benoit.
