Episode 77: Steve Smith. The incredible, multi-faceted, Steve Smith was one of my favorite drummers growing up. His playing with Journey blew me mind, and the fact that he had a full-on jazz career alongside his rock success made him even more inspiring to me. Steve made Modern Drummer's Top 25 Drummers of All Time list and won the #1 All-Around Drummer Award five years in a row. His credits are stacked, from early gigs with Jean Luc-Ponty (alongside Allan Holdsworth), Focus, and Ronnie Montrose, to arena-filling hits with Journey, to leading his band Vital Information (for the past 4 decades). He's done sessions with Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Vasco Rossi, Zucchero, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, and Zakir Hussain. On the jazz side, Steve has played with heavyweights like Steps Ahead, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Hiromi, and Bill Evans.Steve is one of the greatest to ever do it, and it was a total honor to have him on the show. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the legendary Steve Smith! Special thanks to Zildjian. I used their ALCHEM-E Perfect Tune Headphones in this episode and loved it. Singapore has marked off its 14th General Election and Singaporeans have returned the PAP to power with 65.57% of the popular vote, a commanding swing from its 61.24% share in the last general election. But, GE2025 shook up Singapore’s political landscape in more ways than one. Shifting alliances, unexpected or expected outcomes, and a changing voter base have left many asking: what just happened—and what’s next? On The Big Story, Hongbin Jeong speaks with Zakir Hussain, Associate Editor, The Straits Times to find out more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Indian-born tabla player and composer, teacher, and advocate Zakir Hussain, son of Ustad Alla Rahka, who passed away in late 2024, wasn't just a virtuoso improviser - he was one of the world's exceptional percussionists, working in many genres, and was the world's preeminent tabla master. He was a great communicator in many musical languages, including jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, Nigerian talking drums, or Indonesian gamelan; he was also a great listener and a bringer of joy (editor can't help herself.) One of the most exciting ways that Zakir Hussain shared tabla specifically, and percussion more broadly was by way of the Masters of Percussion Tour – which was exactly as stunning and marvelous as a music fan (especially a drum nerd) might ever imagine. Zakir turned the tabla into a global instrument by way of his incredible collaborations, playing with everyone from George Harrison to Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, from John McLaughlin's Shakti and Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Project; he's laid down beats for Scottish fiddlers Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) and Patsy Reid (formerly of Breabach); played concertos with western orchestras, with and without banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, and performed and recorded with scores of Indian classical musicians. Zakir Hussain enjoyed the different challenges that each new collaborator “will throw at him”. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Ustad Zakir Hussain joined Pandit Rahul Sharma, the son of illustrious santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who established the pedigree of the santoor within Indian Classical Music. Pt. Rahul Sharma has since built on his father's style, “taking the santoor to new corners of the world”, (Darbar.org). Rahul Sharma has also collaborated widely across genres, having released some 60 albums, split between classical Indian music and more experimental recordings. Rahul Sharma and Zakir Hussain played in-studio in Oct of 2024, just about six weeks before Hussain passed away. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Dhun: Misra Pahadi 2. Dhun Keharwa Sharma explains the roots of the santoor, and gives a quick demonstration of its 94 strings which require precise tuning: Zakir Hussain also gave an intimidatingly fast explainer of some of the syllables of tabla, what the left and right hand might do, with unbelievable and impressive speed: See their performances:
Kala Ramnath is a world-renowned Indian violinist who performs in both the Hindustani classical tradition, and in collaborations that incorporate many styles with Ray Manzarek of The Doors, Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, Hilary Hahn, Kronos Quartet with Reena Esmail and veena player Jayanthi Kumaresh, and leading orchestras such as my own National Arts Centre, to name but a few. You'll hear about her childhood, and how she became a disciple of the legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj, leading her to revolutionize her approach to Hindustani violin technique. As a teacher she has put together an incredible resource with an extensive video library that she's created of Indian music, Indianclassicalmusic.com When I recorded this interview with Kala, she had just the day before returned from the celebration of life for the legendary tabla master Zakir Hussain, who died this past December, and was one of the most important musicians in both Indian music and in bringing a global audience to Indian music. He had moved to San Francisco in the 1960s and was involved in too many projects to begin to list; in 2024 he was the first musician from India to receive 3 Grammys at one ceremony, including his collaboration with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. Zakir Hussain was an incredibly important mentor of Kala, and you'll hear in her words about what his guidance and collaborations meant to her. Kala talked to me about some of her many cross-genre collaborations, including her fantastic albums with tabla master Bikram Ghosh and her inventive trio with George Brooks and Gwyneth Wentink and you'll hear some of that music as well (albums linked below). Third Coast Percussion is a Grammy-winning classical quartet based in Chicago. They're all composers themselves, but they've also worked with a wide variety of other composers, including Philip Glass and the late great tabla player Zakir Hussain. Their new EP, Murmurs In Time, features Zakir's work of that name, and he was supposed to join Third Coast Percussion here today, but as you may know, he passed away in December. This Soundcheck studio premiere of the work features a disciple of Hussain's, Salar Nader. We'll also hear an excerpt from another work written for Third Coast Percussion, by Tigran Hamasyan, the Armenian jazz pianist and composer. Oh – and it's in 23/8, for anyone counting along. (-John Schaefer) Set list: 1. Tigran Hamasyan – Sonata for Percussion, 3rd Mvmt. – “23 for TCP” 2. Zakir Hussain: Murmurs In Time – second mvmt.

Long-time musical collaborators Mariah Parker (piano, santur) and Matthew Montfort (scalloped fretboard guitar) share their unique blend of captivating music that is sure to uplift. Performing original compositions inspired by the musical cultures of Spain, Brazil and India mixed with the contemporary colors of jazz, the duo creates a mesmerizing sound that has been described by concert goers as ‘absolutely spellbinding' ‘dazzling and unforgettable' and ‘a transporting experience.' Mariah Parker Mariah Parker has been playing music from the time she could reach the keys on the grand piano in her family home. As a composer, pianist and bandleader her work crosses cultural boundaries with an exuberant quest for defying musical labels or categorization. Her academic tenure at UC Santa Cruz was distinguished by her involvement with ethnomusicologist Fred Lieberman and the iconic drummer Mickey Hart on the “Planet Drum” project, marking her early foray into the fusion of musical traditions. Her discography began with the critically acclaimed Sangria in February 2009, followed by Indo Latin Jazz Live in Concert in 2017 and Windows Through Time in 2024. The last two albums have both enjoyed months of prominence on the National Jazzweek Airplay chart and been celebrated globally for their innovative soundscapes and compositional brilliance. Windows Through Time (released June, 2024) “One of the most beautiful and surprising releases of 2024” — Thierry De Clemensat, US correspondent – Paris-Move and ABS magazine “Genre-bending brilliance….with Windows Through Time, Mariah Parker cements her position as a leading voice in contemporary music” — Jazz Sensibilities Matthew Montfort Matthew Montfort is the leader of the innovative world fusion group Ancient Future, and a pioneer of the scalloped fretboard guitar, an instrument combining qualities of the South Indian vina and the steel string guitar. Montfort studied intensively with vina master K.S. Subramanian in order to apply the note-bending techniques to the guitar. In 2012, he was added to the 100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists list at http://DigitalDreamDoor.com , joining luminaries such as Michael Hedges, Chet Atkins, John Fahey, and John Renbourn. Montfort has recorded with legendary world music figures ranging from Bolivian panpipe master Gonzalo Vargas to tabla maestros Swapan Chaudhuri and Zakir Hussain. He has performed concerts worldwide, including the Festival Internacional de la Guitarra on the Golden Coast of Spain near Barcelona and the Mumbai Festival at the Gateway of India in Bombay. Welcome to CNBC-TV18's Marketbuzz Podcast. Here are top developments from around the world ahead of the trading session of December 16 -Zakir Hussain is no more. The Tabla maestro's family has confirmed that the 73 year old succumbed to complications arising from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. -On Friday, the Nifty recovered nearly 600 points from the lows of the day at 24,180 to end within touching distance of the higher end of the 24,500 - 24,800 range it found itself stuck in for the entire week before Friday. That came after a 350-plus points drop from the opening levels. -The market action of Friday indicates a strong comeback of the bulls and more upside is expected in the near-term, said Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities. The next upside target for the upcoming week is 25,200 with immediate support at 24,650, he added. -All eyes for the this week will be on the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, where a 25 basis points rate cut from Jerome Powell and team is almost a done deal, but the focus will be on the commentary for the road ahead as to where the FOMC sees the interest rates in 2025, particularly after Donald Trump takes office on January 20. -This morning, GIFTNifty was trading with a discount of nearly 80 points, indicating a gap-down start for the Indian market. -Stocks to watch: Reliance Industries, Dixon Technologies, Lupin, Aurobindo Pharma, Premier Explosives, Axis Max Life Insurance, JP Power Ventures, JK Paper, Afcons Infra, JSW Energy, Bharat Forge -Looking at global cues, most Asian stocks traded in narrow ranges early Monday ahead of a swath of Chinese data and following a vow from the nation's regulators to stabilize markets. MSCI's Asian benchmark was little changed as shares crept higher in Japan and Taiwan and were little changed in China. South Korean stocks erased earlier gains after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached on the weekend. US futures edged up after the S&P 500 closed almost unchanged Friday ahead of a policy decision by the Federal Reserve this week. Bitcoin rose to a fresh record. -In commodities, oil edged lower, paring Friday's rise as simmering geopolitical conflicts and the prospect of sanctions on Russia and Iran countered projections for a supply glut next year. Gold was little changed. Tune in to the Marketbuzz Podcast for more cues
