But let’s start with the news…   EV CHARGERS FOR BIRMIGNHAM Alabama’s busiest airport is adding a new convenience for travellers with electric cars: free vehicle chargers. Officials say nine new chargers are being added in the parking deck at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Three of the chargers are in the hourly section, and six are in an area used for long-term parking" according to YellowHammerNews: "The new units resulted from a partnership between the Birmingham Airport Authority and Alabama Power Co.  A statement says Birmingham becomes the first passenger airport in the state with chargers for electric vehicles. The airport has more than 120 daily departures on five airlines."   EV FAST CHARGER RIBBON CUTTING August 7 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. "America’s Car Museum are proud to kick-off this first new electric vehicle fast charger at a car museum along the I-5 corridor as part of the West Coast Electric Highway. This time it's the Top 5 cars coming by 2020: "Electric cars that will either be affordable and/or that will disrupt entire segments or even the industry as a whole." "5: VW I.D. Concept - For now, the vehicle is only known as the VW I.D. Concept, but it might end up being called ‘Neo’. VW is planning to release a production version in 2020 based on the concept that they revealed in 2016." "4: Mercedes-Benz EQC - By the time the EQC comes out next year, there will be 3 or 4 all-electric options in its segment, which doesn’t make it very unique, but I think it will result in electric vehicles taking over a lot (maybe even most) market shares of premium SUVs." "3: Volvo all-electric XC40 - Not much is known about the vehicle just yet, but Volvo’s latest CUV platform was built from the ground up to support several types of powertrains – including an all-electric on." "2: Porsche Taycan - I especially like the Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E, for its potential to convince hardcore petrolheads, like many Porsche fanatics, of the advantages of going electric." "1: Tesla Roadster - Tesla is bringing back the Roadster with a new generation of the vehicle that launched the company over 10 years ago. The first production car to get a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds, quarter-mile under9 seconds, and a top speed of over 250 mph."   https://electrek.co/2018/08/04/5-most-exciting-electric-cars-2-years/     NISSAN THINKS MILD HYBRIDS WILL SOON BE OBSOLETE "Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi all have experience building hybrids and electric vehicles, so the alliance is well-positioned to introduce new models. Renault-Nissan advanced product planning manager Warwick Daly expects 35% of Nissan’s European sales to be electrified by 2025 with the goal for 20% of sales coming from plug-in hybrids by 2020." according to CarBuzz.com: "We want to stay ahead of the curve,” said Daly, adding his opinion that “the mild hybrid will start to become obsolete. Our electrification offer will change over time." Clearly, plug-ins and EVs will play a more significant role moving forward for Nissan. “The Leaf will play a bigger role,” Daly said, pointing out that the new car is selling at a 40% higher volume than the previous model. As SUVs grow in popularity, it only makes sense to give the Leaf an SUV sibling.   https://carbuzz.com/news/nissan-thinks-mild-hybrids-will-soon-be-obsolete     CENTRICA PLUGS INTO ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING SECTOR TO FUEL RECOVERY "Britain's biggest energy provider is taking its smart electricity drive on the road with the company’s first major investment in electric vehicle charging." says Jillian Ambrose, www.telegraph.co.uk: "In the coming days, the FTSE 100 owner of British Gas, is expected to ­unveil a multimillion-pound investment in a software company that ­already helps to power more than 200,000 drivers in the US and Europe. Sources close to Centrica said the investment in Israeli start-up Driivz will accelerate its “smart” energy system ambitions, from the home into the burgeoning market for electric vehicles."   https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/08/04/centrica-plugs-electric-car-charging-sector-fuel-recovery/     TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSOLD ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CARS COMBINED "Model 3 not only outsold particular models (all passenger cars except for maybe seven), but for example, it outsold all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars – ≈8,500 (SUVs excluded). AND THE MARKET Enrique Dans from Forbes.com says: "The Tesla 3 may not be a car for the masses, but there are major savings to be made: tax breaks, fuel, maintenance and resale, along with advantages such as free parking and access to lanes for high occupancy vehicles. In short, households that cover more than 20,000 kilometers per year should think seriously about buying a Tesla Model 3. But if you’re considering buying an electric vehicle, any electric vehicle, and you find that the sales person is trying to put you off doing so and convincing you to buy a petrol car instead, ask yourself: why might that be?  If Tesla succeeds in holding onto the top spot this month in the hypercompetitive luxury car middle segment then we could be witnessing a tipping point: an extremely traditional market deeply attached to fossil fuel vehicles that’s beginning to realize that electric is not only cool but also makes a lot of sense. Highest VIN is 89107. https://t.co/OZqpp8nPjs   — Model 3 VINs (@Model3VINs) August 5, 2018   JAGUAR I-PACE TARGETING MERCEDES TAXIS IN GERMANY "Jaguar's I-Pace electric car has Germany's famous Mercedes-Benz taxis in its sights" writes Dominik Wilde for Motor1.com: "The British firm's debut battery-powered effort has delivered 10 of the crossovers to Munich's biggest taxi operator recently. Mercedes-Benz has much of the German Taxi market covered, with around 60 percent of the country's taxis being Mercedes, many of which are E-Classes that are roughly half the price of the Jaguar. A comparable Mercedes, the EQ C crossover, won't be launched until next year." "Jaguar's taxis are part of a plan by the city of Munich – which is the hometown of rival brand BMW –to reduce area pollution. Rides in the new cars will be subsidized by the city council too, with it paying 20 cents per kilometre travelled. Already the Korean firm is worried it might not even be able to keep up with that demand." an article by Nat Barnes in the Express Newspaper said today: "Very few Kona sales are expected to be the lesser 39kWh model though, and the monthly price difference of the 64kWh model will be minimal on a finance plan. "There is a smart regeneration mode, strangely found deep within the trip computer settings which uses the road gradient and traffic levels to automatically choose and adapt a setting for you. This latter mode sounds ideal but the reality is that on the road its constant second-guessing quickly becomes frustrating. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   DELIVERY TIMES ARE DROPPING FOR NEW TESLA MODEL 3 ORDERS The delivery times for the Tesla Model 3 keep coming down. One of your fellow listeners emailed me last week to say between Design Studio and email saying it was complete, was 10 days. But that seems unlikely for most. "Delivery times for a new Tesla Model 3 order have been dropped to as little as a month in the US, down from the 3-5 month delivery window that was previously in place" report TechCrunch: "Both the long-range rear-wheel model (until recently the only one in production) and the performance dual-motor model are now showing delivery times of 1-3 months. That leaves the long-range dual-motor model configuration, yours in approximately 2-4 months once you've put your cash down. This is just a few days after orders were opened up to everyone in the US, reservation or not."   https://www.techradar.com/news/delivery-times-are-dropping-for-new-tesla-model-3-orders   ELECTRIC POWER DOMINATES AT GOODWOOD Chinese car maker NIO, which builds the EP9 with 1,342hp getting 0-60mph out the way in 2.7 seconds. "Nio EP9's electric hypercar has set the fastest time for a street-legal car in the Goodwood Festival of Speed's famous hill climb" says MotorAuthority: "The car ran a time of 44.61 seconds during Saturday's Supercar shootout event, which eclipsed the previous time of 47.07 set by a McLaren P1. The EP9, like the P1 LM, isn't a regular production car, as just 16 examples are planned. Also, the car's street-legal tires were swapped out for racing slicks for this weekend's hill climb. Still, the EP9's run was incredible and a true sign that electric cars have the potential to rewrite the rule book on performance."   Meanwhile the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak Racer is still setting records. "Having smashed the all-time record at Pikes Peak last month, the I.D. R was expected to be among the quickest runners at the 2018 Festival of Speed - and it hasn't let the side down. On Saturday, with Roman Dumas again driving, it whined its way to a 43.05 secs time over the famed 1.1-mile course, shattering the previous record for electric cars." reports Nic Cackett for pistonheads.com: "On Sunday the I.D. R and Dumas repeated the feat in the final shootout, managing a 43.86 secs run to make it the first electric car to win the event outright. In a sign of the times, it was an electric car in second place, too - the remarkable NIO EP9"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs1SMr2A5q4   NEW YORK EPRIX: VERGNE WINS FINALE, AUDI TEAMS’ CHAMPIONS "Newly-crowned Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne won a thrilling season-ending New York ePrix on Sunday, but his victory wasn’t enough to seal the teams’ title for his Techeetah squad." writes Alex Kalinauckas for Motorsport.com: "The race took place in hot and sunny conditions – in stark contrast to the wet weather from earlier in the day, which at one point caused organisers to temporarily suspend the event due to the threat of lightening in the area – although that weather threat disappeared and the race took place as scheduled. Highest VIN is 75464"   Tim Anderson: "The production burst they’ve had at the end of every quarter has been the average production of the following quarter for a while now. My guess is 60k M3’s and at least 20k S & X for a minimum total of 80k cars produced (& likely delivered)."   Dirk Podolak: "Tesla registered 48k VINs in the first half of 2018. Now they registered 19k VINs in the first half of July alone. Guys, that will be an awesome Q3."   JUNE 2018 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLE SALES IN THE US Electric Car Report updated their June sales tracker at 10:15am yesterday morning, on Sunday: "All major automakers reported June sales numbers for electrified vehicles. Numbers are considerably higher than the totals in June 2017. For the month, more than 25,200 electrified vehicles were sold". Tuesday 8th May 2018. TESLA REQUIRES ALL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE AN EMPLOYEE VOUCH FOR THEM Elon Musks recent email to staff said "“I have been disappointed to discover how many contractor companies are interwoven throughout Tesla,” Musk’s email read. “Often, it is like a Russian nesting doll of contractor, subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc. before you finally find someone doing actual work” Now according to Digital Trends: "Musk’s original email gave contractors a week in order to prove their worth to the company, but he has since extended that deadline. However, he is also requiring that contractors have an employee willing to vouch for them or else they will be denied access. Musk’s requirement that Tesla employees put their reputation on the line will likely make it very difficult for the majority of contractors to obtain recommendations. After all, his email seems to imply that if a contractor’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory then it could impact the job of the employee who vouched for it." The full email from Elon over the weekend and obtained by Electrek, reads: "Please send a note to HR before Monday justifying the excellence, necessity and trustworthiness by individual (not just the contractor company as a whole) of every non-Tesla person who has badge access to our buildings or network access to our systems. By default, anyone who does not have a Tesla employee putting their reputation on the line for them will be denied access to our facilities and networks on Monday morning. This applies worldwide. The "barnacles" are a reference to Tesla contractors, an analogy Musk first used publicly in the May 2 earnings call. Now Tesla employees are being asked to put their own careers on the line to justify any contractors they need." TESLA SOLAR ROOF PATENT REVEALS THE SCIENCE BEHIND ITS STUNNING DESIGN We love a bit of Solar chat, and on Inverse.com they've been talking about the Tesla Solar roof. Why does the Tesla Solar Roof look just like a normal roof? How do they not look like traditional panels? Inverse report: "One of the most fascinating aspects of Tesla’s solar roof, which started reaching homes earlier this year, is that it looks like an ordinary roof. The design hides advanced energy-harvesting cells wired to a home battery, and a new patent application published last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sheds light on how the company pulled off the technical feat." Inverse continues: "Louvers inside the tiles act like blinds in a window. The light hitting the roof from the sky passes through, but from the street level the louvers block the sight of the cells and make the tile appear smooth. TESLA REGISTERS 5,009 NEW MODEL 3 VINS AS TSLA RETAKES $50B MARKET CAP On Twitter, Matthew Koloski (@mattk926) said: "#Tesla registered 5009 new #Model3 VINs. Highest VIN is 39263.". Simon at Teslarati point out: “Interacting with members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Koloski noted that none of the new VINs represented dual-motor AWD variants of the Model 3. Over the course of the past few months, Tesla’s VIN registrations have been increasing in number. Exactly two weeks ago, Tesla registered 5,170 new Model 3 VINs — one of the largest batches yet. With this in mind, a production rate of 3,000-4,000 Model 3 per week is starting to seem feasible." MUSK BUYS $9.85 MILLION IN TESLA SHARES AFTER TAUNTING SHORTS Bloomberg have picked up: Elon Musk "bought about $9.85 million worth of Tesla shares on Monday, his biggest purchase since March 2017, according to a regulatory filing. Musk, 46, already was Tesla’s largest shareholder, with his stake now approaching 20 percent" He's also been taunting those betting against Tesla on Twitter saying: "“The sheer magnitude of short carnage will be unreal. If you’re short, I suggest tiptoeing quietly to the exit." FUTURE PROOFING THE OPEL BRAND IN AN ELECTRIC FUTURE Sarah Timmermans, the CEO of Opel Belgium, has been talking about the future of Opel now it's owned by PSA Groupe. In a conversation with Fleet Europe she outlined the challenges electric cars will bring: "We have announced to all our dealers across Europe that we need to change our way to market, that both we and our dealers need to adapt to the changing customer behaviour, and to the changing landscape – disruptions such as electric vehicles. We have clearly indicated that we are entirely technology-neutral. Everybody knows that we need to come down to 95 grams of CO2 emitted per km by 2020, and this is going to require a mix of powertrains. So we are working on electric vehicles, hybrids, hydrogen, along with petrol and diesel in their most ecological versions. Opel/Vauxhall will have 4 electrified car lines on the market by 2020, including the Grandland X PHEV and the next generation Corsa that will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. On top of this, every new passenger car line in Europe will get an electrified option – offering a BEV or a hybrid version alongside efficient internal combustion engine." BATTERY SHORTAGE INTERRUPTS HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC SALES Orders for the Ioniq Electric in Canada are currently on hold due to a global shortage of battery supply. A leaked memo to Hyundai dealers titled "18My Ioniq EV Short-Term Production Shortage" said: ""Due to a temporary global battery supply shortage, the sold order entry system for 18MY Ioniq EV will be closed effective immediately. The 19MY Ioniq EV will be opened at the same time to allow for pre-sale of 19My Ioniq EV, with deliveries beginning in July." According to Green Car Reports; "All this comes just before Hyundai is scheduled to release a long-range version of the Ioniq Electric with a bigger battery, slated to go 200 miles or more on a charge. The current Ioniq Electric comes with a single battery size with a rated range of 124 miles. Further, the Hyundai Motor America spokesman allowed that the battery shortage may affect production of Hyundai's upcoming Kona Electric, which is expected to go on sale toward the end of this year with a 64-kwh battery pack rated at 238 miles of range." WHOLE FOODS BEGINS INSTALLING EV CHARGERS AT STORES "Whole Foods has announced a partnership with electric vehicle charging company Blink to begin installing the EV charge points at its US stores" starting with three stores in Pennsylvania say Autoguide: "Blink charging stations can be located using the company’s smartphone app. The app can also relay information on the charge point’s status thanks to Blink’s cloud-based network. The charging stations are now open at Whole Foods’ locations in Lancaster, Spring House and Exton, Pennsylvania." NEW BATTERY LAYOUT AND MOTOR COMPONENTS IN HYUNDAI / KIA ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Something I found on the Hyundai IONIQ forum, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro are similar but different. "These two cars have the same battery capacity, the same battery pack case, the same motor and electronics. But it seems the two cars have very different battery cells. The Kona EV has NCM622 cells from LG Chem that are optimized more for power density. The Niro EV has NCM811 cells from SK Innovation that are optimized more for energy density. The Niro EV is more of a family car - bigger more comfortable - but the acceleration output through the battery management system (BMS) control is relatively low. The Kona EV cells however allow higher-powered driving. Its body is also smaller, and its agility excellent, which is an advantage for sports driving. In the end, it is analysed that Niro EV is beneficial to achieve stable driving performance and Kona EV has advantages in higher-powered driving."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
