Metroid has never been one of my favorite games, but it's such an important step in the evolution of video games and continues to influence everything today so we had to do an episode about it. Sorry this is a few days late...long week! We streamed Metroid a few years ago. This episode is coming out slightly out of order, so bear with me in that regards. I ended up moving some episodes around after the recording session this was a part of last month. Instead of a Patreon, consider donating to our Extra Life charity drive. We are raising money for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We raised $335 in 2019. So far in 2020 we have raised $420. On Thursday nights around 7pm I stream old and new games until around 9pm. On Sunday nights I also stream around 9pm until I feel like stopping. Check out my Twitch page for more information and a tentative schedule. We are also on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Stitcher. Good morning, RVA! It’s 39 °F, and today you can expect highs in the 50s. Did we do it? Have we moved into the cold part of the year? I’m not sure because this weekend’s weather forecast looks warm, sunny, and amazing.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 2,677↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 6↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 247↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 122, Henrico: 81, and Richmond: 44). Since this pandemic began, 442 people have died in the Richmond region. Before you inhale sharply at the dramatic rise in new positive cases, a note from the VDH website: “The 2,677 case count reported on Monday, November 16 is due to a catch-up from the VDH data system being down for upgrades for a few hours over the weekend.” On Sunday, VDH reported 1,161 new cases and the seven-day average at that time was 1,396. Feel free to do whatever back-of-the-napkin math you’d like to get a better sense of this weekend’s and Monday’s numbers—or just wait until new data drops today. VDH also updated their COVID-19 Pandemic Metrics dashboard, and for the sixth straight week, the Central Region is experiencing “substantial community transmission.” Three of the Commonwealth’s six regions are at “substantial community transmission” and the other three are “approaching substantial community transmission” with an increasing trend. Percent positivity in our region, for Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield is 4.09%, 6.20%, and 7.24% respectively. These are all not the best numbers, and I’m nervous about what the holidays will bring. A lot of folks should stay home, a lot of folks don’t have the option of staying home, and it’s legitimately heartbreaking for many, many people who do choose to stay home. We’ve got a long, hard winter road ahead of us, I think.Related to schools and COVID-19, Henrico County Public Schools Superintendent Amy Cashwell says the District will NOT return to in-person instruction on November 30th as planned. They’ll now wait until January 11th for the youngest students to return. Here’s Cashwell on her reasoning, “When our approach was adopted back in October (in order to give families ample time to plan), the core metrics for the local area and region inspired more confidence in expanding in-person learning than they do today. Since then, two of the three core metrics being monitored have increased significantly. The number of new cases per 100,000 people over a 14-day period has risen to the highest risk level, and the percentage of positive tests in our region has seen a sharp increase. The third metric, related to the ability of HCPS to implement mitigation strategies, remains at the lowest risk level. While my confidence in our school division’s ability to adhere to and implement our health and safety plans remains strong, the sharp increases in two of the three core metrics is of concern to me and to our Health Committee.”City Council’s Land Use, Housing and Transportation committee will meet today and consider the ordinance to adopt Richmond 300 as our City’s new master plan (ORD. 2020–236)! This is incredibly exciting, and I’m grateful for all of the folks—both staff and citizenry—that have put in hours and hours of work to pull this plan together. You can, of course, let LUHT hear your support of this ordinance and Richmond 300 generally by sending a couple of emails (Councilmembers Robertson, Gray, Jones, and Trammell sit on this committee). You’ll have a chance to express your support to Full Council if/whenever this lands on their agenda. I think we’ll know from the tone of today’s conversation whether that’ll be a vote for Current Council or New Council. As he works from quarantine, Mayor Levar Stoney has written a thank-you letter to Richmond. Part coronareminder, part policy platform, the letter lays out some priorities for the next four years while speaking pretty openly about how he’d now handle a project like Navy Hill differently. About the latter he says, “I have learned [Richmonders] want to be brought to the table as we build a more equitable city. I have also learned that to deliver on that expectation, we need consistent and robust community engagement, a willingness to adjust, and an understanding that compromise is not a bad word.” As for policies/goals for the next term, he lists: health and safety during the pandemic, public education during the pandemic, a focus on justice and equity (especially around economic development projects and policing), access to high-paying jobs and affordable housing, and better City services. I’m focused on that first bit about community engagement. There are currently, right now!, opportunities for the City to do “robust community engagement,”—Monument Avenue, the City’s legislative priorities for the General Assembly, whatever’s going on around the Diamond—and I’d love to see them put some of these words into action.Heyoh, what’s this! The Governor has officially announced support for legalizing marijuana in Virginia—at this coming General Assembly session! I’d just written a while back that pending the results of whatever study the GA had commissionedwe might see some movement in this direction, but I didn’t expect such full-throated support from the Gov: "It’s time to legalize marijuana in Virginia…Our Commonwealth has an opportunity to be the first state in the South to take this step, and we will lead with a focus on equity, public health, and public safety.” I’m excited to read more about the legislation he plans to introduce, especially since he wants to focus on racial equity by “including initiatives such as social equity license programs, access to capital, community reinvestment, and sealing or expunging records of past marijuana-related convictions.” Ned Oliver at the Virginia Mercury has more details, including that Northam “envisions an 18 to 24 month timetable for the state to establish and regulate the new marketplace.” I mean, this seems like the easiest vote to make during a budget-crushing pandemic, just look at these numbers: “The Joint Legislative Audit & Review Commission study found that legalization could generate more than $300 million per year in tax revenues by the fifth year of operations and, combined with decriminalization, could reduce marijuana arrests by 84 percent. Legalization could also create more than 11,000 jobs, the study found, but most would be lower-paying positions in retail, cultivation, packaging and security.”Via /r/rva, here’s weirdly gendered 1988 WTVR report on shopping at Willow Lawn when it was still an indoor mall. In 2018, while doing his job at Citi, he created, as an anonymous side project, a website dedicated to bringing QAnon to a wider audience—soccer moms, white-collar workers, and other “normies,” as he boasted. By mid-2020, the site, QMap.pub, was drawing 10 million visitors each month, according to the traffic-tracking firm SimilarWeb, and was credited by researchers with playing a key role in what might be the most unlikely political story in a year full of unlikely political stories: A Citigroup executive helped turn an obscure and incoherent cult into an incoherent cult with mainstream political implications. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
On Sunday 21st November 1920, the Tipperary Football Team travelled to Croke Park to play Dublin in a challenge match. British Paramilitary Forces descended on Croke Park during the game, and opened fire, indiscriminately, killing and wounding men, women and children. When the shooting frenzy which lasted ninety seconds, ended, one player lay dead on the hallowed turf. Tipperary’s Michael Hogan, from Grangemockler. In 2007, Songwriter, Séamus Doran, from Roscrea composed a remembrance song entitled The Ballad of Michael Hogan, which featured on his album “Against the Grain”, powerfully sung by All-Ireland Champion Singer, Tadhg Maher. I met with Seamus recently to talk about the song and a special documentary that will be released very soon
On Sunday, November 15, 2020, Pastor Joe Troutman preached "Loyalty and Its Costs" from 1 Samuel 22:6-23. "Jesus Christ's loyalty to his covenant people cost him his life, but gave us eternal life." 1. Loyalty of Self-Interest Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. 7 And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, 8 that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day.” 9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, 10 and he inquired of the Lord for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.” 2. Loyalty of Love 11 Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king. 12 And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.” 13 And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?” 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and captain over[a] your bodyguard, and honored in your house? 15 Is today the first time that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, much or little.” 16 And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's house.” 17 And the king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword. 3. Loyalty of Gratitude 20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. 23 Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”
On Sunday, Joey took us to Matthew 11:25-30. With reference and comparison to the request of a king that we have seen in 1 Samuel as being a rejection of God, Joey speaks to the invitation found in this text. While putting emphasis on this invite being made to all who are weary, he also speaks on how God first offers Himself to us and reminds us of His yoke that is easy and light.
Maddy Playle is joined by Ed Chamberlin, James Stevens and Paddy Power's Patrick Kennelly to look back at all of the weekend’s action, including the Cheltenham November Meeting and the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown. Drama was in abundance this past week, as we had Alexander Thorne’s 14-1 winner in Twin Star get disqualified after the jockey accidentally took a turn into the wrong room. Elle Est Belle and Ishkhara Lady battled it out in what was a thrilling race at Cheltenham on Saturday, where even a photo-finish couldn't split the pair - or could it? On Sunday, we had confusion at Fontwell as Dharma Rain was awarded the mares’ handicap despite finishing a tailed off seventh. The team also look ahead to Saturday’s feature race, the Betfair chase which will see Lostintranslation and Bristol De Mai set to again lock horns.
On Sunday night, the guys recapped a wild Week 10 including the crazy NFC West, a Hail Mary for the ages, where the Pittsburgh Steelers stand, what to make of the AFC wild card situation and much, much more. Hosts: Mark Carman and Matt Verderame See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Sunday, November 15, 2020, Rev. Robert Mossotti continued his Sunday School series critiquing Dispensationalism, teaching on "The Tents of David, Part 2" from Amos 9:11-12, and Acts 15. “In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the Lord who does this. (Amos 9:11-12) After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written, “‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, that the remnant[b] of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things known from of old.’ (Acts 15:13-18)

On Sunday, November 8, 2020, Pastor Joe Troutman preached, "Refuge for the Fugitive" from 1 Samuel 21:1-22:5). "God is our refuge, and our safety and peace is found nowhere else but in him." 1. Bread and a Blade (21:1-9) Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” 2 And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. 3 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” 4 And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” 5 And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” 6 So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away. 7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's herdsmen. 8 Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.” 9 And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.” 2. King of the Country (21:10-22:2) And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” 12 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me? 15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?” David at the Cave of Adullam 22 David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men. 3. Mission to Moab (22:3-5) And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay with you, till I know what God will do for me.” 4 And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 5 Then the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth. mcopc.org facebook.com/MCOPCpublic twitter.com/mc_opc instagram.com/midcitiesopc

It is followed by the all-mode 432MHz UK Activity Contest from 2000 to 2230UTC. The exchange is the same for both: signal report, serial number and locator. On Wednesday the Autumn Series runs from 2000 to 2130UTC using SSB on the 3.5MHz band. The exchange is signal report and serial number. Thursday sees the 50MHz UK Activity Contest taking place from 2000 to 2230UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Saturday the 14th, the Club Calls contest runs from 2000 to 2300UTC. Using SSB and CW on the 1.8MHz band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and your club information. Next weekend, the WAE DX RTTY contest runs from 0000UTC on the 14th to 2359UTC on the 15th. Using the 3.5 to 28MHz contest bands, the exchange is signal report and serial number. On Sunday the 15th, the UK Microwave group’s Low Band contest runs from 1000 to 1400UTC. Using the 1.3 to 3.4GHz bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Friday the 6th of November. Sunspots are a bit like buses. You wait forever and three come along at once! Last week we had active regions 2778 and 2779, which pushed the solar flux index up to 88. This week we have sunspot region 2781, which is a monster. At the time of writing, this region had pushed the SFI to 88 again, but it has been active in terms of solar flares. These have been minor C-class events, so not too much to worry about. The good news is that geomagnetic conditions have been very settled over the past week, with the Kp index running between zero and two. This no doubt helped ionospheric propagation. There was some good DX reported over the past seven days. TX0T, the DXpedition to Tatakoto Atoll, OC-298, in French Polynesia, has been worked by several stations in the UK. The Far East has also been workable, especially on FT8, where Indonesia, China and Japan have all been spotted. Next week, NOAA predicts the SFI will be in the range 72-76. The good news is that geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be quiet with a maximum Kp index of two. We may get some radio blackouts or sudden ionospheric disturbances as a result of M- or C-class solar flares from active region 2781, but these are difficult to predict. Radio blackouts occur when the strong, sudden burst of X-rays from a solar flare hits the Earth's atmosphere, blocking high-frequency radio signals in the D-region of the ionosphere. NOAA puts the probability of an R1/R2 radio blackout at 15%, and an R3 radio blackout at just 5%. Overall then, it looks like a good week for HF propagation. And now the VHF and up propagation news. There was a brief return of Tropo at the end of the last week. The first of this autumn’s opportunities was complete with fog below the inversion layer. Unfortunately, the related high and its Tropo is not due to last and indeed will have probably moved away during the weekend. It does, though, show the capability of a good temperature inversion with foggy air trapped below it to produce good Tropo. The last vestiges of it are now clearing away across the northern North Sea, but may still be just worth exploring for the 48th Marconi Memorial VHF CW Contest on Sunday. During the weekend, the weather pattern changes to a more unsettled type, which remains dominant through the coming week. This will bring GHz band rain scatter, but also some strong winds at times. As we approach the Leonids meteor shower on the 17th we also have a smaller shower, the Northern Taurids, peaking this Thursday, so meteor scatter conditions should be above average. It is also worth the occasional check for Sporadic-E on FT8 on 10m and 6m. The Moon’s declination is high but starting to fall, going negative on Thursday, so Moon visibility windows will shorten. The Moon is at perigee next Saturday so path losses are low. 144MHz sky noise is low for most of the week. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

On Sunday, October 25, 2020, Elder Mike Gowens continues his series on the Beatitudes by looking at Matthew 5:10-12. This 8th Beatitude is not, like the others, a distinguishing trait of Christian character so much as the result or consequence for living a Beatitude life. Persecution is the cost of discipleship, but the believer may take comfort to know that when earth opposes, Heaven endorses.

When Jesus walked the earth, He had a mission that His followers didn't always understand. His ministry was marked by service and (ultimately) sacrifice. He sought out opportunities to help those who needed Him and asked His disciples to do the same. As His followers today, we are also urged to do as He did. We are to Love Him through service to others. It's the Jesus Way. If you've been feeling that pull to service, we're making it easy to get involved. On Sunday our message topic is Saved People Serve People. We'll give you reasons why service helps build your faith and show you how easy it is to volunteer at Messiah and be a part of our mission. Because service is what we do. This is Us.

On Sunday, November 1, 2020, Pastor Joe Troutman preached "Words of Life" from Galatians 3:1-5 . . . "O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith--. . . ?

On Sunday, October 18, 2020, tens of thousands of Parisians including French President Macron filled Place de la République protesting the grisly beheading of French schoolteacher, Samuel Paty by an 18-year-old Chechen refugee at the junior high school in a suburb. Thousands rallied in other major French cities. The Macron Government is taking this latest jihadist attack with seriousness and dispatch going after those Islamists who fomented a fatwa against the hapless late Professor Paty who displayed the Charlie Hebdo cartoons in his civic class as an example of freedom of speech. Those Charlie Hebdo Cartoons inflamed jihadists on January 7, 2015 to attack the former editorial offices killing 11; while another jihadist took hostages at a Kosher supermarket, killing four Jews. The Macron government and most French revere secular education and teachers are held in high esteem in the society. However, this time it appears that the French Interior Ministry and the counterterrorism prosecutors are going after those who are considered “accomplices after the fact” in the commission of this crime shutting down alleged French Muslim anti-Islamophobia civil rights groups and Mosques supporting Islamic separatism in France. Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin declared: “They launched a fatwa against him (Paty).” The father of a schoolgirl and his accomplice—a notorious anti- Zionist agitator, head of the Cheikh Yassin association—fomented revolt against the teacher, Samuel Paty, who showed Mohamed cartoons in a lesson on freedom of speech. Investigators have discovered that they communicated by phone with the 18-year-old Chechen refugee who beheaded the teacher in Conflans Ste. Honorine and was shot nd killed by French police. Turkey’s Erdogan, the presumptive leader of a Muslim Brotherhood alliance has declared a “boycott’ of France, a NATO partner saying that Macron needed his head examined for condoning caricatures of the prophet of Islam. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the French leader has “lost his way.” France announced it was recalling its ambassador for consultations. France’s Jews have responded by calling for solidarity with President Macron, who has called out rising anti-Semitism given the current trial of accomplices in the January 7, 2015 Charlie Hebdo “massacre" and disturbing testimony by surviving French Jewish hostages at the Hyper Casher Market. Jerry Gordon, a Senior Editor at the New English Review and Producer and co-host of Israel News Talk Radio – Beyond the Matrix reached out to Nidra Poller, American ex-pat in Paris, writer, translator, author, and journalist for her views. She has written extensively on Islamic Antisemitism, murders of French Jews over the past two decades. She was an early investigator in the Mohamed Al Dura “blood libel” propounded by Palestinian activities and leftist journalists against Israel that occurred in Gaza on September 30, 2000 at the start of the Second Intifada ,the subject of French trials she covered involving the France 2 TV news. See her book, "Al Dura: Long Range Ballistic Myth" (2014) . Poller has been the subject of several Israel News Talk Radio – Beyond the Matrix interviews by Gordon and host Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant, republished in The New English Review. On Sunday, Caleb returned us to chapter 9 of 1 Samuel. Speaking on the text he expounded on the story of Saul meeting with Samuel by highlighting some key elements. Caleb showed how Saul, like all of us, is in need of rescue, and thus we should always see each other as people needing rescue and the love of God. He also pinpointed how Samuel had already been given instruction by God on how he would be meeting the man who would be king. In understanding this Caleb explained the importance of acknowledging that it was God who provided Israel's king.
On Sunday, The Athletic broke the news that Arizona has been assessed with nine NCAA violations, including five of the worst variety, by the NCAA. One of them is a Level I toward coach Sean Miller. The podcasts first 30 minutes touch on that (and Norlander's back from vacation), and then at the 30-minute mark, GP and Norlander react in real time to the news that, following Norlander's report from Sunday, ESPN has decided to kill all of its games and multi-team events scheduled to be held from Nov. 25-Dec. 4 in Orlando at Walt Disney World. That has huge scheduling fallout, of course. Will it lead to conferences opting to go league-only? Maybe. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Senate Republicans are expected to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court as early as today, after defeating a Democratic filibuster on Sunday evening and setting up a full vote for Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, Armenia and Azerbaijan agree to a U.S-brokered ceasefire, after weeks of fierce fighting over the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh [na-gor-no kar-ah-bakh]. Previous ceasefires have been... shall we say, temporary, so we’ll see how much good this one does. And lastly, a fresh COVID outbreak hits the executive branch, this time running rampant among Vice President Mike Pence’s staff. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s latest pick for the Supreme Court, could see a full confirmation vote in the Senate as early as today. Barring a dramatic switch in personal priorities by multiple Republican members of Congress, she will almost certainly be confirmed. Republicans led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have been pushing hard for Barrett’s confirmation, overwhelming lackluster Democratic resistance. On Sunday night, Republicans successfully voted to blow past a Democratic filibuster, despite the fact that Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski stood with the Democrats. And that’s as far as Murkowski’s courage went, as she’s expected to vote with her party tomorrow. McConnell is expected to keep the Senate in session overnight to hit the minimum 30 hours between votes, and then push for a full Senate confirmation vote on Monday night. He’s got the votes to do it, which means Trump could have sealed off the seat just hours after you hear this. As I’m sure you know, that would give the GOP a 6-3 conservative majority on the court. The only way back, of course, is to pack the court with new judges. Nothing in the constitution forbids that, but Democrats are still scared to commit to it, for reasons that are probably only understandable if you have terminal centrist brain. But to even get to that point, we’ve got to take the White House and the Senate Back. Shaky Ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to a ceasefire brokered by the U.S. that should have begun by the time you’re hearing this. The State Department release a statement on Sunday announcing that leaders from both countries had agreed to a quote “humanitarian ceasefire” in the conflict which flared up dramatically at the end of September. The two countries have been in conflict over the semi-autonomous, contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan even though most of its inhabitants are Armenian. In late September, the Azerbaijani military launched major strikes against Nagorno-Karabakh, prompting the Armenian military to retaliate. The politics of the region are chaotic and ugly, as both parties are backed by various rival regional powers. Azerbaijan, for instance, is heavily supported by Turkey, and has used indiscriminate shelling and banned cluster munitions against civilian populations in the region. Armenian forces have also shelled Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city, killing numerous civilians as well. Prior ceasfires, however, have been pretty short lived. The conflict has been simmering for decades, with tensions periodically flaring up, but the recent clashes are the most severe in years. It could be that the Trump administration is just looking for a foreign policy feather in its cap right before the election, but any pause in the violence will be a relief for civilians living near the front lines. VP Pence's Staff Copies White House and Contracts Corona A new outbreak of coronavirus has hit the executive branch: this time, it’s Pence’s team that has it. The VP himself, of course, is going about his day like nothing is wrong, because he is a soulless automaton who knows nothing other than “sit in chair, blink, get oddly-straight haircut.” To set the stage here: Pence’s Chief of Staff Marc Short and at least three other members of his staff have tested positive for the disease. Despite the fact that Short is in close daily contact with Pence, the VP isn’t going to stop campaigning, refusing to quarantine because he claims he’s essential personnel. There really isn’t any other word for that than “grossly negligent,” but hey, it’s Pence. It’s also pretty in line with what the rest of the White House is thinking. In a live interview on Sunday, Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said quote “we’re not going to control the pandemic.” endquote. Meadows’s reasoning, as told to CNN’s Jake Tapper, is that the coronavirus is a contagious disease, which, fact check: true! But what he was essentially saying is that the administration was instead going to focus on vaccines and treatments for the disease, rather than try to control its spread. This has been de facto White House policy for basically the entire duration of the pandemic, as it’s far easier to hold out hope for miracle cures than it is to actually implement productive public health policy. But it’s still a bit shocking to hear it laid out in such plain terms. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Axios reports that Trump plans to almost immediately fire the CIA director, FBI director, and Secretary of Defense. While we’re not going to lose sleep over a bunch of spies losing their jobs, it does suggest that he would replace them with even more barbaric sycophants if he wins another term. Throughout all this political drama, the pandemic grinds on: Utah’s ICUs are preparing to ration care as new virus cases shatter records and a flood of patients overwhelm existing networks. The state’s doctors see no indications that their spike will slow down, which could set up a grim outlook for many patients in a matter of weeks. Some good news from Washington State: the Department of Agriculture successfully vacuumed the first nest of murder hornets out of a tree near the city of Blaine. So that’s one thing we can worry about a little bit less. And finally, early voting began in many states over the weekend, and the first numbers coming in are staggering, especially in swing states like Texas. In that state, for instance, 6.4 million people have already voted, which is almost as many as 2012 and 2016 with more than a week to go before the election. That’s all for the Majority Report’s AM Quickie today! Stay tuned for the full show with Sam later today. On Sunday, October 18, 2020, Bolivians went to the polls for the first time since last year’s controversial election and subsequent deposing of longtime president Evo Morales. Evo and many members of the government and political party MAS, the Movement towards Socialism, fled into exile as an interim government seized the reigns of power and used the military and security services to violently put down resistance. The results from Sunday proved a decisive victory for MAS and its candidate for president, former economy minister Luis Arce. Was the result a referendum on the fourteen years of MAS rule? Was it a referendum on the legitimacy of the interim government? Was does the result mean for Bolivia and the region? To explore these questions and more, Dustin and I spoke with Dr. Thomas C. Field Jr, an associate professor of Global Security and Intelligence at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Dr. Field is the author of From Development to Dictatorship: Bolivia and the Alliance for Progress in the Kennedy Era and most recently a co-editor of Latin America and the Global Cold War.
