Viel Freude damit.

Show #457   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 28th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   And thank you to another Patreon supporter who has moved up from Producer to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER LEO   And thank you to Sascha Pallenberg who was my original PARTNER of the show and supported me for over 6 months, and came to the end of his support (for now!).   INCOMING DAIMLER CEO WEIGHS BILLIONS IN COST CUTS "As Daimler's incoming CEO, Ola Källenius will soon be making decisions on where to take an ax to costs as the automaker adjusts to the headwinds of trade tensions, plateauing sales and a pricey electrification strategy. The new boss reportedly is looking for about $6.75 billion in cost savings and efficiency gains by 2021 at Mercedes-Benz car plants." reports Automotive News today. From Ola himself: “There's no two ways about it, the world is going toward zero-emission in the long term. For us, in the next five to 10 years, battery electric vehicles play an absolutely crucial role to go there. Our strategy toward electrification is based upon three pillars. Every single combustion engine that we will have will get a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Then, we will have plug-in hybrids in every segment. And we will have a full family of EQ battery electric vehicles. We don't have [full hybrid vehicles] in the planning right now. We believe that plug-in hybrid at this point is a better use for the customer because you can truly drive electric up to a certain distance. The cost structure of electric vehicles in this first generation or two are definitely higher than what we used to have on the combustion [engine] side. It's one of the main tasks as we scale and further develop the technology, primarily on the battery side, to drive that cost down. That will take many years. It is our goal to be a profitable business. The business case with the electric vehicles has to be profitable, as well."   https://www.autonews.com/executives/incoming-daimler-ceo-weighs-billions-cost-cuts   WATCH TESLA ROADSTER RACE FERRARI FORMULA 1 CAR: SIMULATED VIDEO Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The next-generation Tesla Roadster will supposedly boast a range of some 621 miles or more, but it's not just its insane range that makes the electric supercar so impressive. In fact, some would argue that its range figure takes a back seat to its insane level of performance. When first revealed, Tesla released these specs on the new Roadster:   7,376 pound-feet of torque 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, making it the quickest production car in the world. 0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds Quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, which beats every other production car. 250+ mph top speed"   "Now those are truly some impressive stats, but is the new Roadster fast enough to outpace a Ferrari Formula One race car? In the real world, probably not (though the Roadster does have a slight 0-60 MPH edge over an F1 car, which typically hits 60 in 2.1 to 2.7 seconds), but in the world of flash/CGI, anything is possible."   https://insideevs.com/news/346945/video-tesla-roadster-race-ferrari-f1/   RICH (RE)BUILDS A TESLA GARAGE "Rich Benoit runs the popular YouTube channel, Rich Rebuilds, where he takes broken-down Teslas and brings them back to life, documenting his journey each step of the way. Now he and his business partner, a former parts manager at Tesla, are opening up a repair shop to help stem some of the demand for Tesla service. Tesla customers have often complained about having to wait weeks to get their cars serviced."   https://finance.yahoo.com/video/tesla-rebuild-rebel-leveraging-youtube-130005159.html   TESLA MODEL Y GOES ON DISPLAY "Tesla recently had a Model Y on display for employees to see outside of its seat factory at 901 Page Street in Fremont, California, roughly 3 miles from the company’s main factory. In photos posted by multiple Reddit users, it appears the same deep blue metallic Model Y driven on stage and used for test drives at the car’s unveiling event last month was available in the building’s parking lot for a closer look." writes Dacia for Teslarati: "The vehicle on display is outfitted with chrome-delete trim, a look that’s popular with the Tesla aftermarket community yet a standard factory offering for the Model Y. Additionally, the all-electric crossover is seen with Tesla Sport Wheels in the color black. Tesla offers Sport Wheels in silver as a $1,500 option in the Model 3 and Model Y online configurator."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-spotted-fremont-seat-factory/   BOATHOUSE CHARGES YOUR E-BOAT USING SOLAR/WIND "Lithuania’s VM Productions, who developed the VM800 and VM900 all-electric fishing trawlers (8m and 9m respectively), are now testing an electric boat house/garage that has integrated wind turbines and solar panels to charge the batteries of any electric boat or car." reports PlugBoats: "Sarunas Danilavicius, Export Manager at the company, told news agency BNS Lithuania that the boathouse will have 12 wind turbines. the wind turbines are vertical-axis and make up a sort of ‘second storey’ of the building surrounded by screening instead of solid walls. Solar panels sit on top of the roof of the whole structure."   https://plugboats.com/boathouse-charges-your-e-boat-using-solar-wind/   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R PREPS FOR NURBURGRING RECORD "Volkswagen has completed its first testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife with its Volkswagen I.D. R racer ahead of an official attempt to break the lap record for an electric car. As part of the extensive testing, Romain Dumas once again took the wheel to hone the battery-powered Volkswagen I.D. R on the tortuous 20.8km-long track." reports Motoring.com.au: "Already a four-time Nurburgring N24 winner, Dumas used his experience to adapt the Volkswagen I.D. R with a team of engineers to modify and evolve the former Pikes Peak winner to the bumpy, uneven surface of the former F1 track. To steal the lap record for a pure-electric car, the Volkswagen I.D. R racer must beat the 6 minutes and 45.90 seconds set by the NIO EP9 two years ago.>   https://www.motoring.com.au/volkswagen-i-d-r-preps-for-nurburgring-record-118190/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK Jon Brooks / Kents EVs The daftest thing I’ve ever heard regarding EV’s came from a small time legacy auto maker. They claimed their hybrids are self charging! I mean, come on....what utter drivel :0)   RAJEEV NARAYAN One of the saddest and potentially harmful misconceptions about EVs that I have seen is that their manufacturing and operational life cycle are more harmful to the environment than diesel or other ICE vehicles. This misconception has been given further life by flawed studies that incorrectly overestimate the lifetime mileage of ICE vehicles and underestimate mileage of EVs and completely discount battery recycling, and dropping cobalt concentrations, as well as ignoring the thousands of deaths per year attributable to NOX, and other particulates.  Moreover, the growth of electric ride sharing, over traditional car ownership by many, will increase the number of miles driven by vehicle, and further limiting environmental impact.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH Hi, Martyn. The craziest thing I've heard is that a husband told his wife that EVs are okay so long as she was prepared to deal with the nuclear radiation from the batteries in the floor!

BYD TO BUILD 4TH ELECTRIC-CAR PLANT FOR $1.5BN "Leading Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD plans to spend 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) to build its fourth plant for passenger cars." according to Nikkei.com: "The automaker signed an agreement Thursday with the government of the eastern city of Changzhou to produce electric vehicles and key components there. The new site will have an annual capacity of 400,000 autos. Details on when the factory will break ground or the operational start date were not disclosed. BYD controls a fifth of China's electric-vehicle market, the largest in the world. The automaker, which does not disclose its production capacity for electric cars, sold about 250,000 of them last year."   https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Electric-cars-in-China/BYD-to-build-4th-electric-car-plant-for-1.5bn   COLORADO WANTS TO FINE GAS-POWERED DRIVERS WHO PARK AT EV CHARGING STATIONS "ICEing, when a fossil-fuel-burning internal-combustion-engined vehicle parks in a spot designated for electric charging, can be an act of passive-aggressive evil or an unintentional act of basic necessity. Either way, it can make already more complicated EV ownership a pain, and a new bill in Colorado wants to permanently put an end to it. Perpetrators would be ordered to pay a fine." says Autoblog today "The matter at hand is keeping charging stations in public parking lots open for electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles that need to use them. This includes gas-powered vehicles or battery-powered vehicles that are not actively charging, and results in a fine of $150 with a $32 surcharge. There is no mention of towing in the bill."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/26/colorado-fine-ev-parking-spots/   TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 SET TO SMASH FACTORY CONSTRUCTION RECORD "If you're not yet familiar with Weibo, it's one of the most popular social media networks in China. It's also a place where Tesla has previously posted important information. The website just put out an article claiming that the Tesla Gigafactory 3 is on course to demolish all prior construction records." says Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Tesla China has already changed a vegetable field into a factory in just 108 days (less than four months). in the past it took other companies in the area a minimum of 17 months to complete a structure comparable to the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory. While Tesla held its official groundbreaking ceremony on January 7, 2019, construction was already underway in December 2018. If the company can work to get the project functional anytime soon (and well before May 2020, which is way ahead of what's planned), then it will smash factory construction records by a number of months."   https://insideevs.com/news/346731/tesla-gigafactory-3-record-construction/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-   TESLA SUPERCHARGERS V2 WILL ACTUALLY OFFER 150 KW POWER OUTPUT Staying with InsideEVs: "According to Electrek, a Tesla spokesperson said that the upgrade of V2 Superchargers will enable charging at up to 150 kW, which is 5 kW more than the previously announced upgrade to 145 kW. Originally, the Superchargers were rated at 120 kW, so the final increase will be 30 kW or 25% to 150 kW. As we understand, Tesla is unlocking the full potential of currently installed Superchargers after years of utilization, which proved it's possible and safe."   As for On Route Warmup, Tesla said :"New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%.""   https://insideevs.com/news/346709/tesla-superchargers-v2-150-kw-power/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-   PANASONIC MAY UPGRADE JAPAN PLANT TO MAKE ADVANCED TESLA BATTERIES "Panasonic Corp may upgrade one of its battery plants in Japan to produce advanced-format battery cells for Tesla Inc if needed by the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday." reports Reuters today: "Panasonic, currently the exclusive battery cell supplier for Tesla, produces cells for the EV maker at their joint plant in the U.S. state of Nevada - the so-called Gigafactory - as well as at two plants in Japan.   The Japanese plants handle cylindrical lithium-ion “18650” cells, used to power Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles, whereas the Nevada plant produces the newer, higher-energy density “2170” cells for the mass-market Model 3 sedan.   The Japanese production lines would only need minor changes to switch to 2170 cells from the 18650, said the person, who declined to be identified as the matter was private."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-panasonic/panasonic-may-upgrade-japan-plant-to-make-advanced-tesla-batteries-source-idUSKCN1S1087   TESLA’S NEXT-GEN ROADSTER WILL EXCEED 1,000 KM OF BATTERY RANGE "When Elon Musk unveiled the next-generation Tesla Roadster back in November 2017, he shocked the electric car community by revealing that the all-electric supercar has a range of 620 miles per charge. That’s 1,000 kilometers between charges. The figures are pretty much insane, even by today’s standards." according to Simon at teslarati: "There are now indications that the next-generation Tesla Roadster will go even farther in between charges. Elon Musk mentioned this on Twitter, stating that the range of the upcoming vehicle will be “above 1,000 km.” Musk was responding to Ride the Lightning podcast host Ryan McCaffrey then, who was inquiring if the efficiencies recently introduced to the Model S and X will make it to the all-electric supercar."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-next-gen-roadster-battery-update-range-supercars/   TESLA SEMI PROTOTYPES WORKS 'AMAZINGLY WELL,' PRODUCTION DELAYED "The two Tesla Semi prototypes, unveiled in 2017, were from time to time seen in California or even in many other states doing test runs or simply helping moving stuff (most recently also spotted delivering Tesla Model 3 cars to customers). Elon Musk said that the electric trucks were "working amazingly well," but that's not enough for the Semi to enter production just. Tesla Automotive President Jerome Guillen said" according to InsideEvs.com today: "The production was originally planned from late 2019, but now as Tesla again is struggling with losses, the market launch was postponed until 2020."   https://insideevs.com/news/346746/tesla-semi-prototype-amazingly-production-delayed/   VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R SPIED PREPPING FOR NÜRBURGRING RECORD RUN "The Volkswagen I.D. R is preparing for an all-out assault on the Nürburgring Nordschleife to set a new lap record for an electric vehicle. It needs to beat the Nio EP9's time of 6:45.90 minutes. These spy shots and brief video catches some of the testing for the attempt." according to Christopher Smith for Motor1.com: "Volkswagen did extensive computer simulations ahead of putting the car on the track. These real-world runs are for figuring out the suspension setup and finding the ideal tire compound."   https://www.motor1.com/news/346706/volkswagen-id-r-nurburgring-spied/   FUELL’S NEW BIKES LAUNCH TODAY "Fuell’s new electric bikes, the Flow and the Fluid, officially launch today. The Fluid is their electric bicycle, available as the Fluid 1 (Class 1, 20 mph assist) or 1S (Class 3, 28mph) via website Indiegogo. The bikes start at $2299 with the 30% discount for the Indiegogo campaign." reports ElectricBikeAction:"Those looking for a motorcycle might like FUELL’s Flow e-motorcycle, now available for pre-order. Two versions are available: 11Kw (regulated as 125cc) and 35kW. The former starts at $10,995 and may be eligible for lower licensing requirements, the latter at $11,995."   https://electricbikeaction.com/fuells-new-bikes-launch-today/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 16th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   DELIVERY TIMES ARE DROPPING FOR NEW TESLA MODEL 3 ORDERS The delivery times for the Tesla Model 3 keep coming down. One of your fellow listeners emailed me last week to say between Design Studio and email saying it was complete, was 10 days. But that seems unlikely for most. "Delivery times for a new Tesla Model 3 order have been dropped to as little as a month in the US, down from the 3-5 month delivery window that was previously in place" report TechCrunch: "Both the long-range rear-wheel model (until recently the only one in production) and the performance dual-motor model are now showing delivery times of 1-3 months. That leaves the long-range dual-motor model configuration, yours in approximately 2-4 months once you've put your cash down. This is just a few days after orders were opened up to everyone in the US, reservation or not."   https://www.techradar.com/news/delivery-times-are-dropping-for-new-tesla-model-3-orders   ELECTRIC POWER DOMINATES AT GOODWOOD Chinese car maker NIO, which builds the EP9 with 1,342hp getting 0-60mph out the way in 2.7 seconds. "Nio EP9's electric hypercar has set the fastest time for a street-legal car in the Goodwood Festival of Speed's famous hill climb" says MotorAuthority: "The car ran a time of 44.61 seconds during Saturday's Supercar shootout event, which eclipsed the previous time of 47.07 set by a McLaren P1. The EP9, like the P1 LM, isn't a regular production car, as just 16 examples are planned. Also, the car's street-legal tires were swapped out for racing slicks for this weekend's hill climb. Still, the EP9's run was incredible and a true sign that electric cars have the potential to rewrite the rule book on performance."   Meanwhile the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak Racer is still setting records. "Having smashed the all-time record at Pikes Peak last month, the I.D. R was expected to be among the quickest runners at the 2018 Festival of Speed - and it hasn't let the side down. On Saturday, with Roman Dumas again driving, it whined its way to a 43.05 secs time over the famed 1.1-mile course, shattering the previous record for electric cars." reports Nic Cackett for pistonheads.com: "On Sunday the I.D. R and Dumas repeated the feat in the final shootout, managing a 43.86 secs run to make it the first electric car to win the event outright. In a sign of the times, it was an electric car in second place, too - the remarkable NIO EP9"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs1SMr2A5q4   NEW YORK EPRIX: VERGNE WINS FINALE, AUDI TEAMS’ CHAMPIONS "Newly-crowned Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne won a thrilling season-ending New York ePrix on Sunday, but his victory wasn’t enough to seal the teams’ title for his Techeetah squad." writes Alex Kalinauckas for Motorsport.com: "The race took place in hot and sunny conditions – in stark contrast to the wet weather from earlier in the day, which at one point caused organisers to temporarily suspend the event due to the threat of lightening in the area – although that weather threat disappeared and the race took place as scheduled. Vergne led the 43-lap race from the first corner after muscling his way from third on the grid past polesitter Sebastien Buemi on the run to Turn 1."   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/new-york-eprix-vergne-wins-finale-audi-teams-champion-1060418/?r=191987&em=1   MORE MODEL 3 VINS "#Tesla registered 3,424 new #Model3 VINs. ~100% estimated to be dual motor. Highest VIN is 75464"   Tim Anderson: "The production burst they’ve had at the end of every quarter has been the average production of the following quarter for a while now. My guess is 60k M3’s and at least 20k S & X for a minimum total of 80k cars produced (& likely delivered)."   Dirk Podolak: "Tesla registered 48k VINs in the first half of 2018. Now they registered 19k VINs in the first half of July alone. Guys, that will be an awesome Q3."   JUNE 2018 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLE SALES IN THE US Electric Car Report updated their June sales tracker at 10:15am yesterday morning, on Sunday: "All major automakers reported June sales numbers for electrified vehicles. Numbers are considerably higher than the totals in June 2017. For the month, more than 25,200 electrified vehicles were sold". Checking on the InsideEVs Scorecard, 2018 June was 25,179 compared to 17,046 June 2017.     COMMUNITY Brian Weatherall.   You can listen to all previous 181 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Sunday 15th April 2018.   The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 14th April, shows 16,020 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,332 Model 3’s being built per week.   HYUNDAI IONIQ COULD BE GETTING BIGGER The Hyundai IONIQ is not easy to get hold of, there’s a long waiting list but it’s worth it. Not only is it a great family car but, despite it’s modest 28kWh usable battery. That’s not a criticism because in tests with its peers – the eGolf, new LEAF etc, it can often outperform them on range. However something I’ve seen more of online is complaints over it not being big enough for some markets, and Brinkwire say: “Hyundai has been made aware of this and it probably explains why the carmaker has been caught developing a long-wheelbase variant of the vehicle. The added length to the wheelbase will help free up more room inside the cabin and rumours are also indicating on the use of a larger battery with the car to take advantage of the space.”   TOP 5 ELECTRIC CARS IN THE WORLD Vanda Dendrobium. Price is £1m. It can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in a ridiculous 2.7 seconds and the top speed figure is above 320 km/h. Faraday Future FF 91. Faraday Future are said to be back on track with new funding. The FF 91 has three electric motors that make 1050 hp and is capable of doing 0-100 km/h in 2.39 seconds. The FF 91 also features torque vectoring and four-wheel steering to ensure it can corner hard Nio EP9. From China, EP9 uses in-wheel motors like the Rimac C_Two, aerodynamically designed to generate more downforce than Formula 1 car, with an active rear spoiler. 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. Tesla Roadster. It has one electric motor at the front and two at the back. Tesla hasn't revealed how much horsepower it makes but has claimed that will do 0-96 km/h 1.9 seconds, 0-160 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 400 km/h. Rimac C_Two. It has four in-wheel electric motors that make a combined power of 1888 hp. Range between charges is 640 km and does 0-100 km/h in 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 413 km/h.   TESLA REWORKING SOME PARTTS CNBC claim to have more dirt of Tesla, this is getting boring now, and say: “Tesla is struggling to manage and fix a significant volume of flawed or damaged parts from its suppliers, sending some to local machine shops for rework, according to several current and former Tesla The company said it also makes adjustments to the design of some parts after receiving them from suppliers. Evidence of Tesla's rework burden stands in plain view in San Jose, California, less than a half-hour drive from the company's main factory in Fremont. Towering racks and stacks of boxes emblazoned with Tesla's name stood in the lot beside a sheet metal and machine shop called JL Precision earlier this month.” Or you could say that Tesla has it’s sight sets on standards higher than others are willing to accept, and they want only the best, so they’re ensuring all the parts are perfect before using them to build with. Or you could remember that all car companies are known to do this rather than send a part back if it’s not up to standard. Or you could even just say those parts were being sent for evaluation or quality control. However it’s too easy to write just another Tesla bashing article.   AUTOSPIES CLAIMS A BMW i1 IS COMING “While the BMW i3 may not receive a replacement, the German automaker is allegedly planning an all-new model to replace it, dubbed the i1” says Autospies. “Despite what its name suggests, the BMW i1 would actually be larger than the current i3 but slightly smaller than the next-generation 1-Series, Spain’s Motor.es reports. It is claimed that this all-new model will be based on the same platform as the Mini Cooper Electric and like its British cousin, receive power from a single electric motor powering the front wheels. If this is the case, the i1 should offer a similar range and performance specs to the Mini which, at this stage, still remain a mystery.”   NEW HAMPSHIRE EV OWNERS GET OVERNIGHT DEAL And finally, on the subject of charging and grid demand, “Electric vehicle owners in areas served by New Hampshire Electric Cooperative will be able to get cheap power for recharging their cars, as long as they do it at night or on weekends” according to the Concord Monitor: “NHECannounced Friday that it would become the state’s first utility to offer time-of-day pricing, although only for charging electric cars during off-peak hours. The idea is to reduce the burden that electric vehicles place on the power grid, without discouraging them as a new source of business. They are going to be a growing source of electric load, and it’s new demand mostly,” said Seth Wheeler, spokesman for NHEC. “We don’t want to have to build new power plants to meet this new need. If they charge during periods of low demand, there’s plenty of power and we can avoid the need to build generation.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
