This podcast series is part of the AASHTO Environmental Management technical service program operated by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. It explores a wide array of environmental topics that affect state departments of transportation and the infrastructure programs they oversee. In this episode, George McCue with the Indiana DOT and Dr. Steven Pekarek from Purdue University are interviewed by Bernie Wagenblast regarding an electric vehicle charging project they are conducting under the auspices of the Joint Transportation Research Program. The project is testing a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer or “DWPT” system, whereby transmitter coils underneath the road can send energy to an electric vehicle without ever having to plug it in – a power transfer system that is similar to wireless charger technology for smart phones. In West Lafayette, IN, the Indiana DOT and Purdue have successfully tested a quarter mile of highway on U.S. Route 231 and U.S. Route 52 equipped with over 80 transmitter coils that carried charge to the test vehicle. On the podcast, McCue and Pekarek discuss the multi-faceted aspects of the DWPT project, including the economic viability of the project's technology, potential size limits of vehicles able to use the road, and working on public roadways that can see thousands of drivers daily. Both stress that this DWPT project could significantly expand the range of electric vehicles on U.S. highways.
John Helveston of George Washington University discusses why a U.S. pullback from China on EVs is risky, and why engagement could strengthen America’s auto industry. --- China has rapidly become the center of global EV innovation, producing cars that are cheaper, faster to develop, and increasingly competitive in international markets. The United States, by contrast, is pulling back, eliminating incentives and pursuing policies that distance the country from China just as the global EV transition accelerates. George Washington University’s John Helveston, whose work focuses on global EV markets and China’s manufacturing system, argues that this course risks sidelining the U.S. from the technologies and supply chains shaping the automotive future. On the podcast, he explains why a more pragmatic approach that protects national security and workers while engaging with China’s central role in the EV ecosystem may be essential for America’s long-term position in the global auto industry. John Helveston is an associate professor in the department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at George Washington University. Two years ago we published guidance for the safe carriage of electric vehicles by sea. Much has changed since then and, as a result, we've updated our advice and issued a revised paper – available here: https://iumi.com/policy/position-papers/best-practice-paper-update-risk-mitigation-for-the-safe-ocean-and-short-sea-carriage-of-electric-vehicles/ In this podcast we are talking to two of the authors of the revised paper: Sebastian Kempka who is a senior consultant at KA Köln Assekuranz and a member of IUMI's Loss Prevention Committee; and Ricky Braz, a master mariner and marine underwriter at Munich Re. Our guests discuss the updates and revisions and offer solid advice to all those involved in transporting electric vehicles by sea, including marine insurers.

That guiding principle shapes everything about the vehicle's radical design. As Steve Fambro explained in today's episode, “Aptera is about using the least amount of energy to go from point A to point B,” emphasizing that efficiency isn't a feature of the car, it is the car.Steve, Aptera's co CEO and co founder, walked through the engineering mindset that makes their approach unique. As an electrical engineer, he thinks in terms of systems and losses, so the team engineered the vehicle from the ground up to minimize drag and weight. The result is a three wheeled, solar integrated EV that consumes just 100 watt hours per mile, less than half of what even skilled hypermiling drivers typically achieve. Steve put it simply: “The low drag, the lightweight, and the integrated solar... those are the three parts of the equation to give it that magic.”As reservation holders continue to express enthusiasm, Steve's real world perspective keeps the story grounded. The team is focused on scaling responsibly, leaning on experienced partners like Roush to engineer critical elements for mass production. Aptera's early journey wasn't linear. Steve and his co founder Chris faced misalignment with hired leadership and ultimately watched the original company collapse while they pursued other ventures. Returning with lessons learned, new battery capabilities, and a stronger market, they rebuilt Aptera on firmer foundations.Today the world is meeting them where they are. Their reservation count exceeded early expectations almost overnight. Media attention, including a recent appearance on Jay Leno's show, signaled not just curiosity but genuine enthusiasm. The story of Aptera represents more than another EV. It reflects a reframing of what efficient transportation can look like and illustrates how a focused engineering question can lead to reshaping an entire market.tl;dr:Aptera Motors is revolutionizing EVs with hyper-efficient, solar-powered vehicles designed for maximum energy efficiency. The vehicle's aerodynamic shape and lightweight materials minimize drag and energy consumption.Aptera's integrated solar panels can add up to 40 miles of range per day.Thousands of preorders signal strong demand as Aptera prepares for production next year.Steve Fambro's focus on efficiency and perseverance drives Aptera's mission for sustainable transportation. How to Develop Self-Deprivation As a SuperpowerSteve Fambro's superpower is his ability to deprive himself of comforts for as long as necessary to finish a job. Drawing from his military experience, Steve shared, “I don't let any discomfort… be a factor in my performance.” He described how he can work in extreme heat or go without sleep, food, or rest when required. This skill allows him to focus on achieving his goals without distraction, no matter the challenges.Steve recounted how this superpower helped him during Aptera's early days, as well as in his previous ventures. For example, while working in the Middle East, he endured long hours in 120-degree heat alongside a construction crew, refusing to let discomfort slow him down. His willingness to push himself, even in challenging conditions, has been key to his success.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Practice self-discipline by intentionally depriving yourself of small comforts periodically.Embrace stoic philosophy to build mental resilience and adaptability.Focus on your goals rather than temporary discomfort to stay motivated.Learn from experiences that push you outside your comfort zone, such as travel or challenging work conditions.By following Steve's example and advice, you can make self-deprivation a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileSteve Fambro (he/him):co-CEO/Founder, Aptera MotorsAbout Aptera Motors: Aptera's mission is to create the most efficient transportation on the planet. The Solar Car That Charges Itself While You Live Your LifeGrowing up, I always wondered: why can't cars just recharge themselves as we drive? Turns out, someone finally built exactly that.Robert Hoevers and his team at Squad Mobility created a solar-powered city car that does something brilliantly simple—it charges itself. There's a solar panel on the roof that continuously feeds the battery whether you're parked at the grocery store, sitting in your driveway, or cruising around town. The engineering is impressive, but the user experience is even better. For most people living in sunny climates—anywhere between 45 degrees north and 45 degrees south latitude (roughly Spain to South Africa)—you'll never need to find a charging station. Ever. Here's the reality: the average person drives about 12 kilometers a day for daily errands. School runs, grocery shopping, meeting friends. The Squad solar car has a 150-kilometer maximum range, and the sun replenishes what you use. You just drive it, park it, and forget about charging infrastructure entirely. This is what smart urban mobility looks like. It's street legal with proper crash structures, seat belts, and rollover protection. It tops out at 45 or 70 kilometers per hour depending on which model you choose—fast enough for city streets, not built for highways. In Europe, you only need a moped license for the slower version. The design sits somewhere between a golf cart and a Smart car, which makes perfect sense. Squad isn't trying to replace your family vehicle. They're solving the "second car" problem—those short daily trips where driving a massive SUV feels ridiculous. The market is responding. Squad Mobility has over 5,300 pre-orders and secured 1.5 million euros in European subsidies. They're currently crowdfunding on Republic to bridge the final gap before production starts in about a year. What surprised me most? Ten percent of their pre-orders come from American gated communities and golf cart neighborhoods. These communities already understand the value of compact, efficient vehicles for daily errands. Squad just made them solar-powered and street legal.Yes, you need consistent sunlight. If you live in perpetually cloudy climates, you'll still need to plug in occasionally. But for millions of people in sunny regions tired of hunting for charging stations or paying electricity bills to charge their second car, Squad Mobility built the obvious solution that somehow nobody else did.Sometimes innovation isn't about reinventing the wheel. It's about putting a solar panel on the roof and letting the sun do the work. This is the future of urban mobility, and it's arriving next year. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A viral clip of an EV igniting was what started my worries about safety in car parks I have been designing. Are we ready for fast growing fires? Since 2019 I've learned and studied a lot, I've relaxed on some aspects of it and was able to identify they areas where a lot more engineering considerations should be placed. In this episode I would like to take you inside the engineering choices that shape outcomes: ceiling height, smoke control, structural details, and how fast systems wake up when seconds matter. Instead of arguing EV versus ICE, we look at what the data shows across 148 vehicle fire tests and why there's no single “true” car fire curve.Think of a car as a set of compartments—the cabin, engine bay, trunk, wheels, and for EVs the battery pack—each with its own vents and barriers. That lens explains the wildly different heat release profiles you see in experiments and helps you separate worst-case lab setups from realistic design scenarios. We unpack why rapid battery-led growth is so challenging for low garages, how beams can trap and extend flames under the ceiling, and how wind can either help by stripping hot gases or hurt by pushing fire across bays. From there, we focus on consequences and controls. For evacuation, the goal is to avoid early smoke cut-offs and protect crowded egress moments after events. For firefighting, the single most important factor is a clear entry path—no smoke between the crew and the fire—so water can be applied fast to stop spread, even if battery cooling remains lengthy. For structure, isolated car fires shouldn't be catastrophic in robust frames, but long, multi-vehicle burns can threaten integrity without early control. What works? Height buys time and reduces ceiling flame attachment. Smart smoke control drains energy from the layer and lowers radiation to neighboring cars. Thoughtful layouts keep chargers away from exits and closer to exhaust paths. And suppression systems may not “kill” a battery, but they cut plume temperatures, slash spread potential, and make the entire operation safer. We also surface key gaps: natural battery-initiated growth rates, context-specific risk acceptance, and handling potential explosive gas releases with low-level detection and dilution modes. If you like to learn more, see more here:Miechówka & Węgrzyński: Systematic Literature Review on Passenger Car Fire Experiments for Car Park Safety DesignZahir & César Martín-Gómez: Evaluating Fire Severity in Electric Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles: A Statistical Approach to Heat Release RatesCollection of Fire Science Show episodes on cars and batteriesEpisode 6 - my early research on fast fire growthEpisode 190 - Review of research on vehicle firesPodcast episode 135 - Contemplating a car park design fire----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. Tesla is trying to move away from Chinese-made parts in their cars. Is it because of the tariffs? What impacts do we know the tariffs are having? And where do things stand with companies pursuing electric vehicles? Steven Melnyk, professor of supply chain management at Michigan State, joins us.
China has some 36 million EVs (electric vehicles) on its roads. But their batteries don't last forever. With the first generation of EVs coming to the end of their lifespans, Beijing now faces a new problem: how to recycle and reuse the thousands of EV batteries that are spread across the country? Our correspondents Jan Camenzind Broomby and Eudeline Boishult report.
This is how we end up in trouble. Things are said that aren't challenged. Here's the headline: "NZ will be dumping ground for high emission cars". That was a claim from an EV lobby group. I wonder why they would say that? Chris Hipkins said, or was allowed to say, that we had one of the highest uptakes of EVs in the world and the Government stopped it. Now, let's deal with fact and context. The Government in their announcement over car import charges has a mess on its hands and it's a mess because the previous Government invented a set of rules that don't work, didn't work and were never going to work. They gerrymandered a market and that is rarely smart economics, or politics. Hipkins' reference was to his subsidy scheme for EVs when the taxpayer gave thousands to middle class Tesla buyers. Now, was it one of the highest uptakes in the world? I don't know, but it certainly helped sales because discounted stuff and stuff paid for by other people tends to help sales. If the Government offered to renovate your bathroom, I reckon bathroom renovations would explode. As for a dumping ground? How about less snobbery and more acceptance that New Zealanders are allowed to buy the sort of car they want? A lot of people don't have $50,000-80,000 (or even $30,000 if you go Chinese) for an EV. Even if they do a lot of people simply don't want an EV – some people want a hybrid and that's fine. But you direct people through taxes towards outcomes at your peril. The climate obsession has upended markets and driven a level of complexity through charges that the Government literally doesn't know how to get out of. They have importers bringing cars in they can't sell. What's the point of that? People will buy what people will buy. This isn't China where you are told what to do and when you are cajoled, allegedly through tax and fees, look what happens. The biggest irony is supply is an issue. The importers can't get the stock they need. Why not? Well one reason is because we drive on the opposite side of the road than a lot of countries. And the other is that manufacturers are pulling back on production of the cars that the Government scheme wants you to import. Why are they doing that you ask? Because they can't sell them! Obsession, interference, meddling and stupidity will trip you up every time. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fairview Lifestyle Village in Albany says they're concerned about the risk an EV fire would pose to the busy community's residents and homes. The policy is still in mediation, and residents who already own electric vehicles are allowed to keep them, but they're not letting any new EVs into the gated North Shore community. Retirement Village Residents Association chief executive Nigel Matthews spoke to Lisa Owen.
The first Toyota electric vehicle batteries built in the U.S. rolled off the line in North Carolina this week. It was the culmination of a 14 billion dollar project taking place over the last four years. WRAL's Grace Holland shares her experience touring the assembly line.

The show starts with the 2025 Lucid Air Sedans, which Benjamin thoroughly reviews. This EV sedan from a well-funded startup, promises lots of performance and range, but Benjamin has some thoughts to share about all that. And he wonders, why do we have to keep changing the way we turn cars on and off? Then Sami takes on the 2025 Acura ADX, a much needed subcompact crossover in the Japanese automakers lineup. Based around the Integra, Civic and (ugh) HR-V, the ADX features a punchy 1.5-turbo which may be able to help us gloss over the car's CVT. Sami has plenty of positives and negatives to discuss with the ADX, so be sure to listen to the whole segment to learn everything you need to know about this new crossover.

Paul Herrold of the Sons of Speed sits in for Jill this week. Jill will be back for next week's show. Paul and Tom open the show by discussing consumer-battery maker Duracell's foray into electric-vehicle charging. Duracell branded car chargers are showing up now in the U.K., and are expected to arrive in the U.S. in the not-to-distant future. The hosts go on to discuss two big General Motors announcements. First, GM will be launching full level-3 semi-autonomous drive systems for the 2028 model year, beginning with the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ. An advancement of the maker's Super Cruise technology, the new system will permit drivers to look away from the road while engaged. Listen in for further details. GM also plans to drop Apple CarPlay from all its vehicles beginning in 2028. Jill is going to be angry. Still in the first segment, Paul talks about driving the high-performance McLaren GT on the race track. Paul also talks a little about the McLaren lineup and how the sports-car maker's U.S. offerings differ. In the second segment, Paul and Tom welcome Bart Sowa of GTI Energy to the show. Bart talks about fuel-cell technology, and how hydrogen-power is viable option for large over-the-road trucks. This weeks episode starts off with Sami's description and review of a strange little Jeep that he drove out in Europe: the Avenger EV. Limited with a small battery and front-wheel-drive, how does this compact car translate the Jeep design language to a new market? And what can we expect in North America, with the Avenger's design team penning the new Compass? Sami explains his thoughts, though you have to hang on to understand them all. Then Benjamin reviews the 2025 Subaru WRX tS, and can't stop bringing up his memories of the STI brand. While all kinds of sport compact newcomers keep popping up in the world the old WRX STI used to dominate, Subaru instead holds back, delivering a few upgrades for a lot of money. Why is Subaru limiting itself? Finally, our hosts tackle the complex issue of JLR's cybersecurity hack, which has cost the company about $2B in damages and lost sales. Yikes! Why isn't anyone else talking about this? Thanks for listening!

I have noticed the hatred towards electric vehicles growing the past five years in the natural health world. The topic has become political and there is a clinging to tradition, similar to people that didn't want to abandon the horse and buggy for the automobile, but that will pass with time. I have been saying for years: Why not see the utility and different use cases in both electric cars and gas and diesel cars? In this long time coming episode I talk about why I love owning electric vehicles being 100% off grid, the expensive lessons i've learned over the years to do it easily, how electric cars can provide ultimate freedom with solar panels, the only two car brands I found that work easily off grid, the details of my off grid setup, and I share one source of information that breaks apart every common myth you've ever heard about EVs. The biggest focus of the show is on the electromagnetic field exposure that you get riding in them. I talk about radiofrequency (RF), magnetic, and electric fields and specific supplements that fully protect your cells and mitochondria from harmful effects, namely lipid peroxidation. Human health is about adaptation, not putting yourself in a bubble. We can enjoy modern technological advancements without sacrificing our health or sovereignty.
