Automakers could also face sharply higher penalties for failing to meet fuel-efficiency requirements. The Trump administration rolled back those penalties, which the industry said saved at least $1 billion in annual compliance costs, but a federal appeals court in August reversed the administration action."   https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-election-autos-biden-idUSKBN27608S   That said, Biden is also looking to bolster the EV economy in ways that appeal to automakers: via tax incentives for buyers as well as the development of a more comprehensive national charging infrastructure according to Jalopnik.   "General Motors and Ford, the two largest automakers based in the United States, issued statements Saturday saying they look forward to working with President-elect Joe Biden's incoming administration on policies to support U.S. manufacturing and other issues. " asys Autoblog.   As per the Detroit Free PRess: Ford Motor Co. offered congratulations to Biden, along with all winners of the election, according to a statement from spokeswoman Rachel McCleery. "It is our hope these leaders will focus on bringing the country together and pursue policies that encourage U.S. manufacturing, sustainability and global economic stability".  General Motors also called for policies to support their endeavor, according to a statement from spokeswoman Jeannine Givivan. “We look forward to working with the new administration and incoming Congress on policies that support our customers, dealers and employees, help strengthen our manufacturing presence in the United States and advance our vision of an all-electric, zero-emissions future,” she said.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/11/07/ford-gm-statements-biden-harris-president/   https://eu.freep.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/11/07/joe-biden-president-united-states-michigan/6202866002/   Revisiting fuel economy requirements Expanding and extending the EV tax credit ($250,000 limite to claim) An accelerated conversion of public vehicle fleets to all-electric More charging infrastructure Fewer charging deserts and “energy poverty” A cleaner grid for rural America Helping finance the EV-manufacturing transition Nurturing smaller U.S. EV companies Returning to tariff stability   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1130224_why-biden-presidency-electric-cars-auto-industry-10-talking-points   CHINA CAR SALES KEEP ON TRUCKING IN PANDEMIC RECOVERY "Car sales continued to recover in China last month as the coronavirus pandemic eased in the country and electric vehicles won more users. Retail sales of cars, SUVs and multiple-purpose vehicles increased 8% from a year earlier to 2.02 million units in October, the China Passenger Car Association said Monday. Wholesales of new energy vehicles, which includes electric cars, more than doubled to 144,000 units." writes Bloomberg today on MSN Money: "Electric vehicles are cementing their role as one growth driver, helped by incentives such as purchase subsidies. Sales of new energy vehicles -- which include pure battery EVs, fuel-cell cars and plug-in hybrids -- are expected to rise to about 1.1 million units this year, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers."   https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/china-car-sales-go-from-strength-to-strength-as-virus-eases/ar-BB1aPr8Z   CHINESE AUTONOMOUS TRUCK STARTUP INCEPTIO RAISES $120 MLN FROM CATL "China’s Inceptio Technology, a startup developing self-driving trucks, said on Monday it has raised $120 million in its latest funding led by top Chinese electric vehicle battery maker CATL." repotr REuters: "CATL, which supplies Volkswagen and Tesla , is working with truck makers to develop a business model for electric trucks using its battery-swapping technologies."   https://www.reuters.com/article/inceptio-autonomous-idUSL1N2HU0DG   TESLA'S SHANGHAI SUPER FACTORY PLANS TO PRODUCE ABOUT 550,000 VEHICLES "Tesla’s Giga Shanghai factory plans to produce roughly 550,000 cars in 2021, according to industry insiders speaking to Chinese website 36kr.com (via Reddit). According to an unnamed source, Tesla plans to produce 300,000 Model 3 and 250,000 Model Y units, with order requests apparently already sent to component suppliers." reports TeslaNorth.com: "While Tesla’s Shanghai factory has a planned capacity of 150,000 units in 2020, next year’s more than three-times increase is due to the second phase of the Gigafactory being completed, set to produce Model Y. 36kr.com says insiders predict Tesla’s global sales next year to hit about 900,000 units—with Giga Shanghai taking on more than half of production. Tesla said this year it hopes to achieve 500,000 cars produced in a single year for the first time in its history."   https://teslanorth.com/2020/11/08/tesla-shanghai-factory-plans-to-produce-550000-cars-in-2021-report/   TESLA ANNOUNCES IT DEPLOYED 20,000TH CHARGER "Tesla announced today that the Supercharger network has now reached a total of 20,000 stalls around the world. Last year, Tesla finally launched the Supercharger V3 and picked up Supercharger installations around the world. At the end of last year, Tesla had over 15,000 Superchargers installed at 1,716 locations around the world. Now Tesla is announcing today that it has deployed its 20,000th Supercharger" says electrek: "The rate of deployment is important since Tesla is trying to keep up its infrastructure capacity with the new record vehicle deliveries it is currently achieving. The capacity of the network is also increasing faster with each station thanks to the higher charging output of Supercharger V3, which is reducing the time spent per charging session."   https://electrek.co/2020/11/08/tesla-announces-20000th-charger-supercharger-network/   NIO LAUNCHES THE 100 KWH BATTERY WITH FLEXIBLE BATTERY UPGRADE PLANS The 100 kWh battery features thermal propagation prevention, highly integrated design, all climate thermal management and the bi-directional cloud BMS   The battery upgrade plan benefits all NIO users with flexible monthly or yearly upgrade options for better affordability   Bettered Battery as a Service BaaS with battery subscription for 100 kWh battery   NIO models with the 100 kWh battery will be available for pre-order starting November 7, 2020. Vehicle development is underway in the UK and already more than 130 people are working on it." says InsideEVs: "The decision has been made after the company has realized that people like it and there should be a market for such a great looking, sporty, all-electric car. "   It's a four door saloon. Three years away from being ready. Aimed at the premium sports car market.   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/polestar-precept-electric-grand-tourer-confirmed-production   XPENG SHIPS TO NORWAY "XPeng has started exporting vehicles to Europe. It loaded 100 G3i crossovers on an ocean liner at a port in the south China city of Guangzhou on Thursday. The vehicles will be shipped to Norway, XPeng said." according to Automotive News Europe: "The EVs will be distributed by Norwegian EV dealer Zero Emission Mobility with a starting price of 358,000 Norwegian Krone ($37,590).  The G3i compact crossover -- XPeng’s first product -- has a range of 520 kilometers (323 miles) on one charge." That's about 230 miles EPA. The G3 520 has a 66.5kWh battery from CATL.   https://www.autonews.com/china/ev-startup-xpeng-begins-exports-norway   LORDSTOWN ENDURANCE ELECTRIC PICKUP INTERIOR "Lordstown Motors is continuing the slow tease of its Endurance electric pickup this week, now revealing interior photos ahead of the truck's launch next year" says Motortrend: "Much like the interiors of the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T, the cabin of the Endurance is dominated by screens rather than physical buttons. A long frame on the dashboard houses three separate screens, underneath of which sit physical climate-control knobs. The cabin has a decidedly industrial feel with stark metallic accents, and the overall interior aesthetic matches the minimalist design of the exterior.   Even the guy driving, is wearing a hard hat. "The Endurance will produce up to 600 horsepower with the help of up to four electric in-hub motors, as well as offer a range exceeding 250 miles. Towing capacity is expected to come in at 7,500 pounds."   And as per Fox 28: "On Wednesday, Lordstown Motors Corp. announced it has received 40,000 pre-orders for the Lordstown Endurance electric pickup truck. The pre-orders, which are not binding and may be canceled or delayed, equal $2 billion in potential revenue"   https://www.motortrend.com/news/lordstown-endurance-electric-pickup-truck-interior-photos/   https://myfox28columbus.com/news/local/lordstown-motors-hits-40000-in-pre-orders-for-new-endurance-electric-pickup-truck   MODEL Y ACCELERATION BOOST "Tesla is launching a $2,000 ‘Acceleration Boost’ upgrade for Model Y Dual Motor AWD vehicles — shaving half a second off the 0 to 60 mph acceleration." says Electrek. Last year the same became available for the Model 3. "Tesla owners could unlock performance in their cars through a few clicks in the Tesla app. Now Tesla is bringing the same experience to the Model Y with its own Acceleration Boost. As of today, some Model Y Dual Motor AWD are reporting seeing the Acceleration Boost in the “upgrade” section of their app. Tesla claims that the upgrade will improve the Model Y Dual Motor AWD’s 0 to 60 mph acceleration time from 4.8 seconds to 4.3 seconds. The capacity to accelerate quicker is already inside those cars. Tesla locks that capacity through software in order to reserve it for the “Performance” version of the Model Y, which can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds."   https://electrek.co/2020/09/25/tesla-launches-acceleration-boost-upgrade-model-y/   AMAZON DEVICE WORKS WITH TESLA SENTRY MODE "Ring has announced its first foray into products meant for use outside of the home with a new line of security cameras designed for cars." reports The Verge, talking about Car Connect from Amazon, a black plastic USB connected dongle for your Tesla: "Ring says it’s working with many automotive makers to build support for the system, but the first partnership it’s announcing is with Tesla. Owners of the Model 3, X, S, and Y that have Sentry Mode enabled will be able to install a device in their cars that allows them to connect to the car’s existing cameras and view footage."   How does it work? Tech Crunch has the details: "Ring Car Connect consists of an API that car manufacturers use to provide Ring customers access to mobile alerts for any detected events around their vehicle, or to watch footage recorded from their onboard cameras. This also allows access to information that wouldn’t be available with a strictly aftermarket setup – like whether the car is locked or unlocked, for instance. Ring’s first automaker partner for this is Tesla,  which is enabling Ring Car Connect across the 3, X, S and Y models. Users will install an aftermarket device coming in 2021 for $199.99, but then they’ll be able to watch Tesla Sentry Mode footage, as well as video recorded while driving, directly in the Ring app."   $200 on top of your monthly Ring subscription.   https://www.theverge.com/2020/9/24/21453632/ring-car-alarm-security-camera-connect-tesla-price-specs-features-amazon   https://techcrunch.com/2020/09/24/ring-gets-into-automotive-security-with-three-new-car-products-including-one-debuting-first-for-teslas   TESLA “PILOT” BATTERY FACTORY = 13TH LARGEST "Tesla revealed at its Battery Day this week that it intends to produce 3 terawatt-hours (TWh) of batteries a year by 2030. That’s more than Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (aka Benchmark Minerals) was forecasting for all lithium-ion battery production combined before Battery Day." says Clean Technica: "Tracking 187 battery factories, Benchmark Minerals was forecasting 2.7 TWh of annual battery cell production capacity globally by 2030. The company forecasted that Tesla would be at 200 GWh of that total.  Even just by 2022, Tesla plans to produce 100 GWh of batteries a year."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/24/tesla-pilot-battery-factory-13th-largest-in-world/   LYNK & CO ZERO CONCEPT Geely’s luxury Lync & Co sub-brand unveiled the Lynk & Co Zero Concept. The Zero Concept is a luxury pure electric vehicle that will be based on Geely Holding’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), a pure electric architecture that will be used as the basis for all new electric vehicles within the Geely Holding Group portfolio. Ford says: "No other vehicle in its class can accelerate faster than the Mustang Mach-E GT". Conveniently forgetting about the Tesla Model Y Performance which is 3.5 0-60mph. Mach-E customers will also receive one year of free access to the IONITY fast-charging network that has now established more than 270 charging stations en route to a targeted 400 by the end of this year. Charging with up to 150 kW at an IONITY station, Mustang Mach-E in extended-range battery, rear-wheel drive configuration is estimated to add an average of 73 miles driving range within approximately 10 minutes of charging and has a targeted WLTP pure-electric driving range of up to 379 miles.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/09/ford-reveals-blisteringly-quick-mustang-mach-e-gt-for-europe/   MINNESOTA OFFERS GRANTS TO DEPLOY UP TO 38 FAST CHARGING STATIONS "The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has announced that it will fund the installation of up to 38 additional fast charging stations in Greater Minnesota, extending the existing EV highway corridor network by more than 2,500 miles. Chargers are to be placed 30 to 70 miles apart along 7 proposed corridors." saysa ChargedEVs: "The new $2.6-million grant opportunity leverages funds from the national Volkswagen settlement. ChargePoint operates more than 115,000 charging ports globally, mostly in North America, and previously said it is aiming to increase that to 2.5 million by 2025 Other EV companies with SPAC deals include Fisker, Lordstown Motors and Canoo. Electric and fuel cell vehicle startup Nikola"   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/24/chargepoint-public-stock-exchange-spac-valuation-official   DOES ROLLS-ROYCE SILENT SHADOW TRADEMARK FORESHADOW AN EV? "Shadows aren't know for being loud, but Rolls-Royce could have an extra quiet shadow in the works, even quieter than a regular Silver Shadow. Silent Shadow is the name the Anglo-Germanic automaker trademarked in Germany" writes Autoweek: "Rolls-Royce cars are already expensive, so the EV hardware wouldn't even move the needle much when it comes to price. And they're already heavy, so the automaker doesn't have to worry about curb weight. Best of all, the hardware is already available to its corporate owner, the BMW Group. Rolls-Royce cars are also quite large, so the batteries can also be large and heavy, possibly enough to give the cars an industry-leading range if desired, something more than 500 miles on a single charge. And since a lot of Rolls-Royces spend time idling in Shanghai and Moscow traffic, they don't need Ludicrous acceleration all that frequently."   https://www.autoweek.com/news/a34147271/does-rolls-royce-silent-shadow-trademark-foreshadow-an-ev/   You can listen to all 898 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketlace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E EASILY GOES 300+ MILES IN NORWAY "Ford is now testing its hot new Mustang Mach-e electric crossover/SUV in Europe. Naturally, the #1 place to take an electric vehicle is Norway, where approximately 70% of new vehicle sales are now electric (fully electric or plugin hybrid). That’s where Ford has been playing around with the Mustang Mach-E, and the results are looking good" says CleanTechnica: "ord shared that the “all-wheel drive model with a targeted WLTP driving range of 335 miles exceeded energy-efficiency expectations, travelling 301 miles non-stop from Oslo to Trondheim, finishing the journey with 14 per cent battery capacity remaining.” Not too shabby, and that’s not even the extended-range trim, which Ford expects to get a WLTP range rating of 379 miles."   Ford press release says: “Latest testing shows charge time has improved by nearly 30 per cent from early estimates, reaching an average of 73 miles of range within 10 minutes using IONITY fast charging, when equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive.”   The UK homepage at ford.co.uk still has the old time of 58 miles. And 370 miles (Model 3 LR is 348, for £3,000 less, 75kWh battery). 150kW peak charge rate. 99kWh gross.   And if we're playing THIS game, the Model 3 can add 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes.   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/18/ford-mustang-mach-e-easily-goes-300-miles-in-norway/   PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO TURNED INTO SAFETY CAR "Porsche just introduced a new all-electric safety car in its Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland series, which this weekend had a 45-minute opening race on the Circuit de la Sarthe, as part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France." says InsideEVs: "Meet the Porsche Taycan Turbo version, retrofitted to handle the job, but at the same time remain street legal. In fact, while the racing cars were transported on trucks, the Porsche Taycan Turbo safety car drove on its own from Germany to Le Mans on public roads. With 500 kW of power, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds and more than 400 km (250 miles) of range, the Porsche Taycan Turbo is a pretty good choice for the purpose. It's not the first plug-in safety car, as several years ago BMW introduced the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 (and i8 Roadster) safety cars for the Formula E series, but it's one of the first that's all-electric."   https://insideevs.com/news/444796/porsche-taycan-turbo-safety-car   LUCID AIR MIGHT HAVE JUST BEAT TESLA’S PLAID MODEL S ROUND LAGUNA SECA "EV startup Lucid has only just announced its debut car, the Air, but is already setting its sights on lap records currently held by Tesla’s Model S tri-motor Plaid Edition. According to a trackside sleuth who goes by The Kilowatts on Twitter, Lucid was putting its tri-motor powertrain through its paces, and appeared to post a claimed 1 minute 33 seconds lap time at Laguna Seca racetrack in California. Scroll down for trackside footage of the Air in action." says The Next Web: "ccording to The Kilowatts, they recorded the Lucid Air’s time using their own stopwatch. Of course, this is an unofficial time, but on a racetrack where lap times are separated by fractions of a second, the Lucid seems to have a comfortable buffer over Tesla’s Model S Plaid Edition, which completed a hot lap of Laguna Seca in 1:36.55 last year. Lucid has been quite tight-lipped about its tri-motor setup, and the not-so-subtle leak of a Tesla trouncing lap time at its local racetrack is certainly a warning shot of sorts. Bear in mind, Tesla Battery day is next week, and one of the many things that could be announced is Tesla’s tri-motor Plaid Model S."   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/09/18/the-lucid-air-might-have-just-beat-teslas-plaid-model-s-round-laguna-seca/   FIRST TESLA MEGAPACK DEPLOYED IN UK TO HELP KEEP THE LIGHTS ON "In July Tesla Megapack and Tesla Autobidder AI entered the UK market. Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and Harmony Energy have joined forces to launch their first UK battery system. This week, for the first time in the UK, a project using giant Tesla Inc. batteries was used to help balance supply and demand in Britain’s electricity market." according to Tesmanian: "National Grid spent 718 million pounds ($932 million) balancing the network from March to July to cope with low demand and high supply of renewable generation—39% higher than usual, according to BNN Bloomberg. A new computer system used by National Grid has allowed burgeoning technologies like batteries to be used in the balancing market more easily. The 7.5-megawatt Holes Bay energy storage plant in Dorset in southwest England is operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures BV and Harmony Energy Ltd."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-megapack-giant-batteries-are-being-use-in-uk-for-the-1st-time-to-keep-lights-on   TESLA REINTRODUCES ‘ENHANCED AUTOPILOT’ "Tesla has reintroduced the ‘Enhanced Autopilot’ option – offering a cheaper alternative to the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package for existing owners. Finally, the automaker ended up making the Autopilot’s Autosteer and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control standard on its vehicles and bundled the rest of the features into its ‘Full Self-Driving package’ (FSD)." according to Electrek: "The automaker started selling the FSD package for $5,000 and it has gradually increased the price to now $8,000 – following an update earlier this summer. It is leaving Tesla owners with limited and expensive choices. Now Tesla has reintroduced the option of an Enhanced Autopilot package for $4,000 – breaking down some of the features previously only available in the ‘Full Self-Driving’ package;. It’s the same Enhanced Autopilot package that Tesla used to offer and includes all the features that don’t require the automaker’s latest onboard self-driving computer."   EA is: Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon.   https://electrek.co/2020/09/19/tesla-reintroduce-enhanced-autopilot-alternative-full-self-driving/   CHINESE CARMAKERS LAG BEHIND IN NEV QUALITY: SURVEY "China is the world's largest market for new energy vehicles, but Chinese carmakers still lag behind international companies in terms of vehicle quality, according to a JD Power China study released Thursday." says China Daily: "The study also finds that international brands perform better in the exterior, infotainment system, seats, powertrain, and interior categories, while Chinese startup brands like Nio exceed in driving experience, battery and charging. new energy vehicle owners not only expect technological and smart in-vehicle features, but also require high quality. That means carmakers must deliver vehicles with both high quality and advanced technology. In August, sales of new energy vehicles reached 109,000, up 25.8 percent year-on-year, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers."   http://www.chinadailyglobal.com/a/202009/17/WS5f6328eea31024ad0ba7a387.html   MERCEDES EQS SPIED REMINDING US IT WILL TECHNICALLY BE A HATCHBACK "Now that the new S-Class is out and about, we’re gradually turning our attention to its electric equivalent in the vast Mercedes range. Unlike the EQ C based on the GLC, the EQS will distance itself from the S-Class by riding on a dedicated electric car platform. We can say the same thing about the styling as while the two crossovers have similar proportions and some common design traits, the EQS looks far more futuristic than the traditional Daimler flagship." reports Motor1.com: "A fresh batch of spy shots from the Nürburgring reminds us Mercedes is taking a more practical approach compared to the Taycan and E-Tron GT. While the Porsche and Audi EVs are sedans, the EQS will be a hatchback / liftback as denoted by the visible outline of the large tailgate in the adjacent images. The Tesla Model S has a similar setup, whereas the electric Jaguar XJ and BMW i7 will be sedans judging by the most recent spy photos."   https://www.motor1.com/news/369809/mercedes-benz-vision-eqs-frankfurt/   HIGH-POWER CHARGING TRUCKS BECOME MOBILE POWER SOURCES From Track Experiences to the Ice Experience in Finland, the Taycan is now an integral part of Porsche’s customer driving programmes. However, not everywhere provides the adequate infrastructure for charging the electric sports car en masse. Meet Porsche’s innovative solution: a fleet of stand-alone, high-power charging trucks that offer mobile charging on demand. The Hungaroring in Budapest was the venue for a special Porsche Track Experience just a few days ago, where “Soul on Track” offered customers the opportunity to test the Taycan on a circuit. Such driving events present organisers with a particular challenge, however: when a large number of Taycan cars need to be charged quickly and simultaneously, the local infrastructure isn’t always up to the job. Without a satisfactory solution on the market, Porsche wasted no time in creating its own. With a power rating of 3.2 megawatts, ten Taycan can be charged simultaneously at maximum speed. The battery buffer storage unit has a capacity of 2.1 megawatt hours. This means that up to 30 Taycan in total can be charged by the energy storage unit. The latter is generally recharged with renewable power from the power grid. For example, during a three-week customer event in the Portuguese city of Portimao in November 2019, the power came directly from the nearby photovoltaic systems. The trailers can be recharged very quickly – under good conditions, they are fully charged again within four hours.   https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020/company/porsche-high-power-charging-trucks-mobile-power-sources-22285.html     You can listen to all 893 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #789   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 25th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CHINA: ROUGHLY 61,000 PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS SOLD IN APRIL 2020 "The automotive market in China continues to recover, as in April 2020, overall car sales nearly matched results from a year ago (down only 3%)." says InsideEVs looking at EV Sales Blog: " more than 61,000 passenger plug-ins (72% were BEVs) were sold at the market share of about 4%. After the first four months of 2020, total sales amounted to roughly 191,000 (4.2% of the total market). The Tesla Model 3 remains on the top after four months, but with "just" 4,312 sales it was actually second best in April, behind the BYD Qin Pro EV (5,096). It will be interesting to see how things will change once BYD introduces the Han in volume. Previous reports already indicated that the Model 3 result in April would be weaker (3,635 wholesale shipments) and now we got the confirmation. Reuters adds that in total 4,633 Tesla cars were registered (so 312 Model S/X we guess)."   https://insideevs.com/news/424936/china-plugin-cars-sales-april-2020/   THE NEXT FORD RANGER COULD COME WITH PLUG-IN HYBRID POWER "It was a little more than a year ago that we saw renders that looked like they could be the next Ford Ranger. After Ford’s lawyers kindly confirmed that they belonged to the company, we knew they might have some bearing on how the next Ranger will look. Now we think we know what will be under the hood, too." according to Jalopnik: "Motor1 has cited a report from Australian outlet CarExpert which claims that Ford’s mid-sized pickup will feature a new plug-in hybrid powertrain never seen before in another production model when it arrives sometime next year as a 2022 model.  The drivetrain will allegedly see the Ranger receive a version for ford’s well-known 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which, when combined with a ten-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor, should be good for 362 horsepower and more than 500 lb-ft of torque. Those are serious numbers for a mid-sized pickup and if the mileage numbers are similarly impressive, Ford will have quite the package on their hands."   https://jalopnik.com/the-next-ford-ranger-could-come-with-plug-in-hybrid-pow-1843640675   TESLA FILES TO SELL NEW MODEL 3 WITH CHEAPER LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE BATTERIES "Tesla has filed with the Chinese government for approval to sell a new version of the Model 3 with cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The vehicles built in Shanghai are Tesla’s first without Panasonic-made battery cells in them. Tesla contracted LG Chem and CATL to make the batteries for the vehicles being built at its new factory." writes electrek: "Now Tesla has applied for with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for approval of a new Model 3 equipped with LFP batteries in the latest batch of vehicles published in the Ministry’s Road Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Enterprises and Products. The main disadvantage of LFP batteries is their lower-energy density, but CATL, which is believed to be Tesla’s supplier, has made improvements in LFP energy density and longevity."   Also, cell to pack technology.   From the comments: "LFP also have 5000-15000 cycle life, and better round trip efficiency and higher power density. They are nickel free too. They have a much wider temperature range nearly as good cold as Lead acid, and they like heat to a degree. They should be able to charge faster and perhaps go faster. Energy density is their only down side is it looks like that's has gotten much better."   https://electrek.co/2020/05/25/tesla-model-3-cheaper-lithium-iron-phosphate-batteries/   PORSCHE TAYCAN ROLLOUT SLOWED BY CORONAVIRUS "The coronavirus pandemic has complicated Porsche's rollout of a "milestone" model in the United States and Canada, to a lesser extent." according to Automotive News: "But as COVID-19 cases surfaced in Germany, Taycan production at the Zuffenhausen assembly plant in Stuttgart was halted for six weeks starting in early April. Production restarted in mid-May. Porsche reported about 350 Taycan sales in the U.S. from December through March. Global demand for the Taycan has outstripped Porsche's expectations, forcing it to reportedly double annual capacity to 40,000. The EV's importance to the brand was underscored in February when Porsche ran its first Super Bowl ad in more than 20 years to promote the electric model."   Porsche Cars North America CEO Klaus Zellmer told Automotive News last week: "That six-week window was very much reserved for fulfilling the U.S. demand.  We had to take thousands of cars out of our sales plan for this year that we will not get into the United States and Canada."   https://canada.autonews.com/cars-concepts/porsche-taycan-rollout-slowed-coronavirus   2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN 4S – IS THIS THE BEST ELECTRIC CAR IN THE WORLD? "The car’s 800V electrical system allows for not only that kind of charging power to be used, but it also allowed Porsche to use extra thin cables around the car’s body, shaving some 40 kilos of weight in the process. And when it comes to sports cars, weight is an important factor. As for the charging times, it will depend on the type of charger you’re using. Use a 270 kW one and you can go from 5% to 80% in 22 minutes." says BMW Blog: "Porsche infused so much driving enhancing technology into the Taycan that it needs a dedicated computer just to handle all the data read by the sensors on board. And that computer must run on “black magic”, or something, because it was doing incredible things for a car that was over 2.2 tons with be behind the wheel."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/24/porsche-taycan-4s-test-drive/   TESLA MODEL Y WINS OVER EV RENTAL FIRM THAT SCRAPPED 100 MODEL 3 ORDERS CITING BUILD ISSUES "The Tesla Model Y was recently reviewed by a German electric car rental company known as nextmove, which highlighted the electric crossover’s advantages compared to the Model 3. The EV rental firm is a veteran in the electric car movement, but nextmove gained particular attention last year when the company canceled a massive order of 100 Tesla Model 3 over build quality issues." reports Teslarati. That's a $5.5m order: "However, it appears that the rental company has maintained an open mind with Tesla, as the firm has decided to purchase the Model Y crossover for its business. The nextmove Managing Director, for one, has stated that the Model Y will likely make waves in Germany, especially when Gigafactory Berlin starts producing the vehicle for the local market."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-nextmove-review-model-3-build-quality/   SIX IN 10 UK DRIVERS 'TOO DAUNTED' TO BUY AN ELECTRIC CAR "Almost six in 10 UK motorists are still too concerned about electric cars to consider buying one, according to new research. The study of 2,000 UK drivers found that a perceived lack of charging points and high mileages are among the key reasons why drivers feel battery power may not be for them." says Motor1: "Almost three-quarters (73 percent) also said they thought owning an EV would not be feasible due to a lack of charging infrastructure, although this rose to almost eight in 10 (77 percent) among those living in rural areas. However, even those in more urban locations had their concerns, with 64 percent saying charging points were too scarce."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/424397/drivers-concerns-electric-cars/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   What are your desired specs for an electric pick-up truck?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 227 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #740   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 6th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Listener correspondence:   JS Davison Hi Martin, Long time listener from down under, so time to break out your (very average) Aussie accent.  In case you are not aware Subaru have released a very soft Forester Hybrid in Australia with a very small battery and electric motor.  You will glad to know Subaru obviously bought some technology from Toyota, as the ad on the T.V. calls it a 'self charging' hybrid.  I imagine our EV hating (and oil loving) politicians will love this.  Keep healthy and I look forward to many more podcasts.  John from Western Australia.   POLESTAR PRECEPT: NEW CONCEPT SLEEK SALOON Evolution of the Android-powered infotainment system first found in Polestar 2 Large 15-inch digital interface recognises the driver upon approach, with settings and personal content authenticated by the Polestar Digital Key Video streaming services will become available when parked or charging Proximity sensors adjust what is shown on the screen depending on where the user’s hand is placed – display brightness and screen content adjusts according to movements and the need for more or less information depending on what the user is doing 9-inch horizontal driver display contains vital information and is linked to eye tracking Eye tracking monitors where the driver is looking and adjusts the way information is presented – smaller and more detailed when the driver is focused on the display, and larger, brighter, vital information when focused on the road Google Maps and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) are now merged into one system for safer manoeuvres and more accurate predictions based on traffic conditions, and shown together in one combined graphic in the driver display Roof-mounted LIDAR pod positioned for superior visibility for future advanced driving technology LED side markers on the C-pillars indicate charging status Doors open wide for easy access; rear doors are rear-hinged Rear camera and side cameras feed digital interior mirrors   TESLA IS NEARING DEBUT OF LONGER RANGE CHINA-MADE MODEL 3 "Tesla Inc. plans to expand its lineup in China by offering a locally built Model 3 sedan with a longer driving range from as early as this week, according to people familiar with the matter." says Bloomberg: "The longer-range Model 3, like the existing cheaper version, would qualify for electric-vehicle subsidies and is exempt from China’s car purchase tax. Registrations of Tesla vehicles have fallen for two consecutive months in China, showing the U.S. carmaker isn’t immune to the broader auto-industry slump."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-07/tesla-is-nearing-debut-of-longer-range-china-made-model-3?sref=W369vOBR   TESLA PROUDLY HIDES ‘OCTOVALVE’ INSIGNIA IN MODEL Y "A number of the Tesla Model Y’s secrets are now coming to the surface, as auto veteran and teardown expert Sandy Munro continues his disassembly and analysis of the all-electric crossover. Among the most noteworthy of these secrets is the vehicle’s “Octovalve,” which could very well be an upgraded version of the Model 3’s unique “Superbottle,” which serves as the heart of the all-electric sedan’s thermal management system."  writes Teslarati: "Tesla appears to have provided its latest vehicle with an “Octovalve” instead. Munro is yet to tear down and analyze the Octovalve, but just like its predecessor, it seems to be the heart of the Model Y’s cooling and heating system. Interestingly enough, the use of the Octovalve instead of the Superbottle in the Model Y may be due to the all-electric crossover’s heat pump. Prior Teslas like the Model S, Model 3, and Model X have used electronic resistive heating systems, which are quick but less efficient than heat pumps."   Elon tweeted on 20th March: "PCB design techniques applied to create a heat exchanger that is physically impossible by normal means. Heat pump also has a local heating loop to spool up fast & extend usable temperature range. Octavalve is pretty special too. Team did great work. No credit to me."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-octovalve-easter-egg-teardown/   BMW TO KEEP ITS KIDNEY GRILLE ALIVE IN EV ERA "One of the most recognizable grille designs in the industry is staying put. BMW will continue to use its iconic double kidney bean grille design – large or small – even as the automaker moves toward offering more electric vehicles." according to Motor1: "The BMW Concept i4 also featured an enormous grill that made many people wonder what's in store for the rest of the BMW lineup. Many of today's electric vehicles don't have a traditional grille like you'd expect to find on a gas-powered car. EVs still require some cooling, but there's more leeway with the design."   2020 FORD MUSTANG MACH-E SUV PRICING ADJUSTED "Ford has revised its UK pricing for the forthcoming Ford Mustang Mach-E. The adjustment means that the extended-range, rear-wheel drive model now starts at just under £50,000, making it eligible for the government plug-in car grant deduction." according to CarBuyer: "The price change only applies to the long-range model, which now starts at £49,900, a slight reduction from the original list price of £50,190. The adjustment means that buyers will benefit from the government’s £3,000 plug-in car grant, which now only applies to electric cars with a starting price of under £50,000."   https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/news/170717/2020-ford-mustang-mach-e-suv-pricing-adjusted   TESLA IS WORKING ON SOMETHING CALLED ‘CHEETAH STANCE’ FOR THE PERFECT LAUNCH "Tesla is working on a new version of “Launch Mode” that will include something called “Cheetah stance” to involve the adaptive suspension in a launch from a standstill." says Fred at Electrek:" Last year, Tesla developed a new “Smart Adaptive Air Suspension” for Model S and Model X.Now Tesla is taking advantage of the new suspension to build a new feature around it According to Tesla hacker Green, who had access to an upcoming Tesla software update, the automaker is updating Launch Mode, which enables Tesla performance vehicles to launch at full power, for the Model S and Model X Raven. It sounds like Tesla will lower the suspension in the front, which is already required to use the current ‘Launch Mode,’ but it will leave the back higher — like a cheetah."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/05/tesla-cheetah-stance-launch-mode/   NEW DACIA SPRING ELECTRIC CONFIRMED TO ARRIVE NEXT YEAR "Dacia will launch “Europe’s most affordable electric car” next year, bosses have confirmed." reports Jonathan Burn at Auto Express: "Prices are yet to be confirmed, but in order to become Europe’s cheapest EV it will have to undercut the  £17,445 price tag after incentives of the entry-level Skoda Citigo e-iV. The electric hatch is a rebadged version of the Renault K-ZE that's currently available in China. Measuring up at 3.73 metres in length, it sits between the Volkswagen up! and the three-door MINI Hatch in terms of size."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/dacia/109132/new-dacia-spring-electric-confirmed-arrive-next-year     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 238 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Louisville Colorado (just 20 minutes north of Denver), has become a hotbed for next generation EV batteries. Now Tesla is hiring for a 'Cell Technician' in the area to "assist anode development and optimization R&D." Additionally, the candidate is required to understand "electrode fabrication, delicate assembly of coin cells, cell dissection, running cell tests and data analysis & lab-scale electrode slurry mixing and electrode coating" .... Interesting! Could Tesla be partnering with one of these startups, Solid Power, Forge Nano or SilLion?

Show #626   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 30th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ELON MUSK DONATES $1 MILLION TO #TEAMTREES "With a single Tweet on Tuesday night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took one YouTuber’s global crowdfunding project straight into “ludicrous mode.”.  Last week, YouTuber Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson officially announced the ‘#TeamTrees’ initiative, aiming to raise $20 million by the end of 2020 to help the Arbor Day Foundation plant 20 million trees around the world." reports Forbes: "The donation already appeared on the #TeamTrees leaderboard as of late Tuesday evening, with Musk leaving just a two-word note on the website: “For Treebeard.” Musk also proceeded to change his Twitter name to “Treelon.” His profile picture at publication time is an image of trees in a forest."   teamtrees.org 8,346,590   https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisstrub/2019/10/29/teamtrees/#1955aa2a5f6e   TESLA NOTES MARKET DROP IN THE USA "Just a few days after Tesla presented surprisingly good quarterly figures, the electric car company is now showing details on regional business development in a press release to the SEC." writes electrive: "Tesla’s sales figures in the US market show a slump by almost 40 per cent during the third quarter, from $5.13 billion to $3.13 billion. According to Reuters, this is the first decline in more than two years. Over the same period, sales in China rose by 64 per cent to $669 million and in the rest of the world by more than $1 billion to $1.83 billion."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/30/tesla-notes-market-drop-in-the-usa/   HONDA'S NAMING STRUCTURE FOR HYBRIDS AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES " Honda -- a company not necessarily known for its hybrid and electrified options despite being one of the first companies to sell a hybrid-electric vehicle to consumers -- has decided to rebrand its forthcoming hybrid models as (and I hate typing this) "e:HEV" says CNET: "The one bright spot in all of these abbreviations is that they may not make it all the way to the US. Honda says that it's not yet finalized its plans for the US market, which means we may be spared the onslaught of clashing letters and colons"   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-hybrid-electric-naming-structure-change/   PORSCHE TRIES SELLING ITS CARS ONLINE IN THE US "Porsche isn't just trying to fight Tesla by offering electric cars... it's hoping to replicate some of the business model, too. The automaker is piloting online car sales in the US, giving would-be owners a chance to buy from 25 of the country's 191 independently owned dealers." reports Engadget: "The EV builder lets you custom-order cars, and will deliver to your home if you're too far from one of its service centers. Its strategy primarily revolves around online sales where Porsche is still tied to the dealership model. "   https://www.engadget.com/2019/10/28/porsche-online-car-sales-pilot-us   TESLA UPDATES MODEL X WITH NEW FRONT SEATS "Tesla has updated Model X with new front seats to improve comfort in its flagship SUV, which also received a small range increase. With the Model X, Tesla has spent a lot of time designing the seats. Now Tesla is updating the front seats of the Model X." says Electrek: "Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla communicated to employees that new Model X vehicles being built right now have new front seats. The new seats are less bulky, resulting in more legroom for the second-row seats regardless of the configuration (five, six, or seven)."   https://electrek.co/2019/10/29/tesla-updates-model-x-front-seats/   SERVICE PLAN FOR PEUGEOT E-208 IS A THIRD CHEAPER THAN GAS 208 "Helen Lees, Head of Electric Vehicles & Connected Services at PSA Group, shared an interesting view that electric cars bring new threats to the car industry. This time it's however not about the intensity of capital investments to make the switch (develop new models and retool the plants), but about the loss of aftersales revenue. That's because electric cars are simpler and need less service than the conventional internal combustion engine equivalent." says InsideEVs: "For example, the upcoming Peugeot e-208 service plan envisions a third lower expense than in the case of the Peugeot 208 service plan."   https://insideevs.com/news/379385/service-plan-peugeot-e-208-third-cheaper/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 256 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Last month, we reported on a situation that was captivating China and perplexing Tesla. In a video that was widely shared on social media, a Model S sitting idly in a parking garage is recorded bursting into flames. At the time, Tesla took a judicious approach and dispatched a team to China to work with investigators to determine whether the video was real and, if so, what the heck was going on.But while Tesla was quietly investigating, they were greeted with some unwelcome news: earlier this week, Reuters reported that another parked Model S – this one in Hong Kong – found itself engulfed in flames… so much so, in fact, that it took firefighters 45 minutes to fully put it out.Now Tesla says that, in an abundance of caution, it will be issuing a software update that revises “charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X vehicles.” Tesla’s software updates are always initiated over-the-air, meaning owners don’t need to bring their vehicles into the dealerships. In a statement, the company says they will continue to investigate the root cause, but the update should “further protect the battery and improve battery longevity."So, Tesla owners – are you freaking out? Should you be? Car and Driver says to take a deep breath: a few cars bursting into flames when the company has sold half a million shouldn’t be a reason to panic, they say. Believe it or not, Elon Musk agrees. Tesla’s chief took to Twitter after the Shanghai fire to remind everyone that cars powered by the internal combustion engine catch fire a lot more. Just how big is the discrepancy? According to Musk, Teslas are about 500% less likely to catch on fire than their gas-powered counterparts. But this assertion hasn’t help raise the company’s stock price which, after these incidents and a much-worse-than-expected quarterly loss, has dropped $100 per share since the close of 2018.

Tuesday 8th May 2018. TESLA REQUIRES ALL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE AN EMPLOYEE VOUCH FOR THEM Elon Musks recent email to staff said "“I have been disappointed to discover how many contractor companies are interwoven throughout Tesla,” Musk’s email read. “Often, it is like a Russian nesting doll of contractor, subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc. before you finally find someone doing actual work” Now according to Digital Trends: "Musk’s original email gave contractors a week in order to prove their worth to the company, but he has since extended that deadline. However, he is also requiring that contractors have an employee willing to vouch for them or else they will be denied access. Musk’s requirement that Tesla employees put their reputation on the line will likely make it very difficult for the majority of contractors to obtain recommendations. After all, his email seems to imply that if a contractor’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory then it could impact the job of the employee who vouched for it." The full email from Elon over the weekend and obtained by Electrek, reads: "Please send a note to HR before Monday justifying the excellence, necessity and trustworthiness by individual (not just the contractor company as a whole) of every non-Tesla person who has badge access to our buildings or network access to our systems. By default, anyone who does not have a Tesla employee putting their reputation on the line for them will be denied access to our facilities and networks on Monday morning. This applies worldwide. The "barnacles" are a reference to Tesla contractors, an analogy Musk first used publicly in the May 2 earnings call. Now Tesla employees are being asked to put their own careers on the line to justify any contractors they need." TESLA SOLAR ROOF PATENT REVEALS THE SCIENCE BEHIND ITS STUNNING DESIGN We love a bit of Solar chat, and on Inverse.com they've been talking about the Tesla Solar roof. Why does the Tesla Solar Roof look just like a normal roof? How do they not look like traditional panels? Inverse report: "One of the most fascinating aspects of Tesla’s solar roof, which started reaching homes earlier this year, is that it looks like an ordinary roof. The design hides advanced energy-harvesting cells wired to a home battery, and a new patent application published last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sheds light on how the company pulled off the technical feat." Inverse continues: "Louvers inside the tiles act like blinds in a window. The light hitting the roof from the sky passes through, but from the street level the louvers block the sight of the cells and make the tile appear smooth. TESLA REGISTERS 5,009 NEW MODEL 3 VINS AS TSLA RETAKES $50B MARKET CAP On Twitter, Matthew Koloski (@mattk926) said: "#Tesla registered 5009 new #Model3 VINs. Highest VIN is 39263.". Simon at Teslarati point out: “Interacting with members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Koloski noted that none of the new VINs represented dual-motor AWD variants of the Model 3. Over the course of the past few months, Tesla’s VIN registrations have been increasing in number. Exactly two weeks ago, Tesla registered 5,170 new Model 3 VINs — one of the largest batches yet. With this in mind, a production rate of 3,000-4,000 Model 3 per week is starting to seem feasible." MUSK BUYS $9.85 MILLION IN TESLA SHARES AFTER TAUNTING SHORTS Bloomberg have picked up: Elon Musk "bought about $9.85 million worth of Tesla shares on Monday, his biggest purchase since March 2017, according to a regulatory filing. Musk, 46, already was Tesla’s largest shareholder, with his stake now approaching 20 percent" He's also been taunting those betting against Tesla on Twitter saying: "“The sheer magnitude of short carnage will be unreal. If you’re short, I suggest tiptoeing quietly to the exit." FUTURE PROOFING THE OPEL BRAND IN AN ELECTRIC FUTURE Sarah Timmermans, the CEO of Opel Belgium, has been talking about the future of Opel now it's owned by PSA Groupe. In a conversation with Fleet Europe she outlined the challenges electric cars will bring: "We have announced to all our dealers across Europe that we need to change our way to market, that both we and our dealers need to adapt to the changing customer behaviour, and to the changing landscape – disruptions such as electric vehicles. We have clearly indicated that we are entirely technology-neutral. Everybody knows that we need to come down to 95 grams of CO2 emitted per km by 2020, and this is going to require a mix of powertrains. So we are working on electric vehicles, hybrids, hydrogen, along with petrol and diesel in their most ecological versions. Opel/Vauxhall will have 4 electrified car lines on the market by 2020, including the Grandland X PHEV and the next generation Corsa that will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. On top of this, every new passenger car line in Europe will get an electrified option – offering a BEV or a hybrid version alongside efficient internal combustion engine." BATTERY SHORTAGE INTERRUPTS HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC SALES Orders for the Ioniq Electric in Canada are currently on hold due to a global shortage of battery supply. A leaked memo to Hyundai dealers titled "18My Ioniq EV Short-Term Production Shortage" said: ""Due to a temporary global battery supply shortage, the sold order entry system for 18MY Ioniq EV will be closed effective immediately. The 19MY Ioniq EV will be opened at the same time to allow for pre-sale of 19My Ioniq EV, with deliveries beginning in July." According to Green Car Reports; "All this comes just before Hyundai is scheduled to release a long-range version of the Ioniq Electric with a bigger battery, slated to go 200 miles or more on a charge. The current Ioniq Electric comes with a single battery size with a rated range of 124 miles. Further, the Hyundai Motor America spokesman allowed that the battery shortage may affect production of Hyundai's upcoming Kona Electric, which is expected to go on sale toward the end of this year with a 64-kwh battery pack rated at 238 miles of range." WHOLE FOODS BEGINS INSTALLING EV CHARGERS AT STORES "Whole Foods has announced a partnership with electric vehicle charging company Blink to begin installing the EV charge points at its US stores" starting with three stores in Pennsylvania say Autoguide: "Blink charging stations can be located using the company’s smartphone app. The app can also relay information on the charge point’s status thanks to Blink’s cloud-based network. The charging stations are now open at Whole Foods’ locations in Lancaster, Spring House and Exton, Pennsylvania." NEW BATTERY LAYOUT AND MOTOR COMPONENTS IN HYUNDAI / KIA ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Something I found on the Hyundai IONIQ forum, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro are similar but different. "These two cars have the same battery capacity, the same battery pack case, the same motor and electronics. But it seems the two cars have very different battery cells. The Kona EV has NCM622 cells from LG Chem that are optimized more for power density. The Niro EV has NCM811 cells from SK Innovation that are optimized more for energy density. The Niro EV is more of a family car - bigger more comfortable - but the acceleration output through the battery management system (BMS) control is relatively low. The Kona EV cells however allow higher-powered driving. Its body is also smaller, and its agility excellent, which is an advantage for sports driving. In the end, it is analysed that Niro EV is beneficial to achieve stable driving performance and Kona EV has advantages in higher-powered driving."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Home Charging Challenge, Daimler EV Investment and Autopilot Upgrade | 25 Feb 2018   Chinese Investment In Daimler With EV Projects In Mind | National Newspaper Says 2% Of Owners Have Home Chargers | Tesla Looks To Workplace Chargers | Profits Up For VW As Electric Plans Move Forward | Tesla Autopilot On Verge Of Major Update | Porsche 911 Could Electrify   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and future transport.  My name is Martyn Lee and this is your EV News Daily for Sunday 25th February 2018. On the podcast today… we’ll talk about free Tesla chargers for where you work, and strange surveys….   GEELY GO AFTER THE GERMANS   …but first Chinese EV maker Geely has invested in Daimler, and they’ve invested enough to be the largest single shareholder.  Now Geely already own Lotus, Proton, and Volvo since they bought it from Ford in 2010 – who earlier this week we were talking about making a PHEV V60 model, plus the new London Black Cabs which are EV REX.  Plus of course they recently spun off Polestar from Volvo to make expensive, high end electric cars.   It seems it’s Geely’s owner Li Shufu who has made the investment, which is just under 10% of the company around £6.4bn, or $9bn.   So what’s behind the move? Well the owner of Geely is a billionaire to he’s clearly a good businessman. The Mercedes EQ brand has been getting a lot of publicity and, from the details we’ve had, is well regarded in terms of the progress they’ve made with developing EV drivetrains for their cars.  There are economies of scale too; the new LEVC black cab has recognisable bits switchgear from a Volvo for example.   http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/102743/geely-buys-a-10-stake-in-mercedes-benz-owner-daimler-ag   MAJOR SURVEY SAYS 2% OF EV OWNERS HAVE HOME CHARGERS   Next let’s’ talk about how EVs are written about by the mainstream media. It’s a Sunday and as people sit down to read a Sunday newspaper supplement – although fewer and fewer people do these days – what did the Sunday Times Newspaper here in the UK have to say about EVs?   2,000 people were surveyed, 16% saying the next car would be a BEV, PHEV or hybrid. And yet it says a third would have to drive 10 miles to charge it. The survey was done by CarWow. It says 2% of those with an EV already have a charger at home. And that doesn’t seem to make sense. I can’t think of any question CarWow would have asked, even singling out PHEV drivers or including all soft hybrid cars as “electric”, to get a result so low. There are 140,000 EV’s sold here in the UK  and 100,000 home chargers have been installed.   Andrew Hooks is the COO of Carwow and we tried to connect with him on Twitter to reach out to him to ask about methodology, and now they get the 2% figure, but we doesn’t seem to be on social media. When their PR are back in the office on Monday I’ll follow it up.   https://www.driving.co.uk/news/middle-classes-drive-electric-car-boom-nowhere-charge-battery/         As for where and when you charge, we reported last week about a large US study of LEAF owners who had charging at home and at work, and 96% of all charging was done in either location. And now Tesla are getting into workplace charging. Now Tesla has announced it wants to work with large workplaces to install free chargers for Tesla owners as long as the employer pays for the electricity.   For most people, they’re at work for 8-10 hours a day, and then at home 8-10 hours a day so, between both locations, their charging should be covered. With a Tesla charger you could just charge at work if you live in an apartment or don’t have parking at home.   https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/02/teslas-new-workplace-charging-program-would-corner-office-parking-spots/   PROFITS UP FOR VW, AS EV PLANS TAKE SHAPE   VW Group posted record earning on Friday. I’m torn as I still own a Golf, I love VW quality, I’ve had two golfs, but I really hate their culture on emissions, animal testing to further their diesel agenda. So on one hand Dieselgate was a turning point when I said I’d never own another VW, but their investment into electrification is huge and you can see from the top of the company the direction they’re going in.   The Dieselgate emission scandal has cost them $30bn already, that’s about £21.5bn, with more set aside. However profit is up to almost $14 Euro helped by the top end of the market, like Audi and Porsche. Of course, coming soon is the E-Tron and Mission-E respectively.    https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-volkswagen-results/vws-profitability-may-take-a-hit-from-electric-vehicle-shift-idUKKCN1G71XD?il=0   TESLA AUTOPILOT ON THE VERGE OF MAJOR UPDATE   Tesla is beta testing its new Autopilot. Tesla already have billions of miles of autopilot driving logged and advances to its Neural Net system is said to be at the core of these improvements.    We heard a few weeks ago from Elon Musk saying a new version was coming soon, so Tesla owners are probably close to getting an update.   The question that’s still being asked: is Autopilot 1.0 better than Autopilot 2.0?   https://electrek.co/2018/02/23/tesla-autopilot-beta-testing-new-autopilot-update-with-new-feature-neural-net/   LEGENDARY 911 COULD GET BATTERIES   And finally, the legendary Porsche 911. Porsche hasn’t exactly made a ringing endorsement for electrification but they said they wouldn’t rule it out, and that the most positive they’ve been.   https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/hybrid-electric/a18701912/electric-porsche-911-porsche-interview-news/     TESLA WANT TO CHARGE YOUR CAR AT WORK   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested.   Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, Google Play for your Android devices, and most recently now on Spotify’s Podcast section.
