It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. U.S. STEPS CLOSER TO NEW $12,500 EV TAX CREDIT"The US Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday approved a bill to increase the tax credit for electric vehicles assembled by union workers in the US up to $12,500. This would apply to electric vehicles up to a price of $80,000." reports Chris Randall at Electrive: "The new law would remove this existing cap, but a different, future limit is included in the proposal: For example, the tax credit would be phased out over a three-year period once 50 per cent of car sales in the US are electric cars. Now for the proposed increase in the credit up to $12,500: The proponents of the bill, led by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, propose to increase the $7,500 tax credit by $2,500 for vehicles assembled in the US and by another $2,500 for vehicles manufactured in plants whose employees are members of or represented by a union." Yahoo! News points out: “That would mean smaller credits to automakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen and others who do not have U.S. union workers, and companies building EVs outside the United States. The EV incentives are estimated to cost $31.6 billion through 2031, according to a congressional estimate. The bill must still be approved by the full Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. The bill also includes a 30% tax credit for manufacturers to retool or build new facilities to produce advanced energy technologies including batteries and new incentives to purchase commercial electric vehicles." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/27/us-senate-approves-increase-of-ev-tax-credit/ https://news.yahoo.com/u-senate-panel-advances-ev-025709643.html RIVIAN DELAYS DELIVERIES OF THE R1T LAUNCH EDITION BY ONE MONTH"Rivian said that deliveries of the R1T Launch Edition, the limited edition release of its first series of “electric adventure vehicles,” will be delayed by a month, according to an update on its website." reports Tech Crunch: "Customers who preordered can now expect to start receiving their pickup trucks in July instead of June, with Launch Edition deliveries to be completed by Spring 2022. The change was first spotted by the Rivian Forum. The one-month delay was due to a combination of small issues, including delays on shipping containers, the ongoing chip shortage as well as ensuring the servicing piece is properly set up, a Rivian spokesperson said." https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/27/rivian-delays-deliveries-of-the-r1t-launch-edition-by-one-month/ FORMER WAYMO FINANCE CHIEF DWYER JOINS EV STARTUP RIVIAN"Rivian Automotive Inc., the electric-vehicle startup backed by Amazon.com Inc., has hired a former finance chief from Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving arm Waymo LLC. Gerard Dwyer, who was Waymo’s chief financial officer, joined Rivian this week as vice president of business finance, according to a post on LinkedIn." says Bloomber: "Waymo, long viewed as the leader among autonomous-driving startups, is seeking to raise as much as $4 billion from outside investors and also considering an IPO, Bloomberg reported last week, citing people familiar with the plans." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-27/former-waymo-finance-chief-dwyer-joins-ev-start-up-rivian FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC GOOGLE STREET VIEW CAR IS A JAGUAR I-PACE"For the past few years, Google has equipped its mapping vehicles with air pollution sensors. Google worked with Jaguar Land Rover on the first all-electric Street View car that will be tasked with measuring air quality in Dublin, Ireland." says 9to5Mac: "A Jaguar I-Pace is being used for this effort, and it will see a roof mounting for the tall Street View camera, as well as a new rear-window glass for wiring and redesigned interior switchgear for sensor controls. The visual system was last updated in 2017 to provide higher-resolution images while being less bulky. The vehicle will also be equipped with Aclima mobile air sensors that record nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as well as fine particles (PM2.5). Meanwhile, Google is partnering with the Dublin City Council on the Environmental Insights Explorer tool that provides local data on air quality." https://9to5google.com/2021/05/25/electric-google-street-view-car/ FIRST RIDE IN THE ELECTRIC LUCID AIR SEDAN "The ride was comfortable, and while the Air makes the low-speed pedestrian noises all EVs are required to make, nothing is piped into the cabin. That means riding in an Air is a mostly calm and serene experience, at least until the driver floors the throttle. After my first encounter back in 2017, I was impressed with how well-built the Air was. Despite being an alpha prototype, everything I poked or prodded worked, including the three screens and their UI. But the car I rode in this past weekend felt like a huge step beyond that earlier experience in every regard." writes ArsTechnica: "Lucid is currently building a batch of 70 preproduction cars, with another run of 100 that, among other things, will be used for PR and marketing. And I can't tell you how curious I am to drive one of them." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/05/we-got-our-first-ride-in-the-electric-lucid-air-sedan/ HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 SUBSCRIPTION WILL LET EV INTENDERS TRY BEFORE THEY BUY"Although Hyundai hasn’t yet announced a base price or price range for the 2022 Ioniq 5 electric vehicle, it’s already suggested that a new subscription plan will be one of the ways you can get behind the wheel of this very intriguing EV.  Hyundai Motor America on Monday said that in their research they found that what it terms “mobility pioneers”—people more eager to try electric vehicles—were used to using subscription services in many parts of their life." according to Green Car Reports: "This is Hyundai’s second try offering an electric car under a subscription plan. In 2017 and 2018 it offered the Ioniq Electric with an “Ioniq Unlimited” program—focused toward cost-conscious Millennials—that folded charging costs, scheduled maintenance, and even replacement costs of wear items into a single monthly payment. Although Hyundai won’t detail the program until later in the year, there are already two key differences. This time, it’s intended for intervals as short as one to three months, and it’s aimed at a more affluent crowd—just those who want to try before they buy." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132386_hyundai-ioniq-5-subscription-will-let-ev-intenders-try-before-they-buy TESLA LOSES U.S. DESIGNATION FOR SOME ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES"Newer Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will no longer be labeled as having some advanced safety features after the automaker said it was removing radar sensors to transition to a camera-based Autopilot system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Wednesday." reports Automotive NEws: "The U.S. agency confirmed it updated its website to show that Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced on or after April 27 "do not have NHTSA's check mark for recommended safety technologies: forward collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support." The agency said it "only includes check marks for the model production range for the vehicles tested." The NHTSA's five-star crash ratings website includes check marks for up to four recommended advanced safety technologies." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/tesla-loses-us-designation-some-advanced-safety-features EVGO LAUNCHES RESERVATIONS CHARGING PROGRAM ON US WEST COAST"Public fast-charging network EVgo has announced a new program called EVgo Reservations that gives drivers the freedom to claim their spot at a charger ahead of time. The initial rollout consists of 17 locations across California and the Seattle area in a pilot program that has already expanded." says electrek: "In a recent press release, EVgo announced 17 locations that now feature the new EVgo Reservations program. The company’s software team developed this new feature by integrating various makes and. models of EV fast chargers with its own back-end software system. As a result, drivers can now make a reservation at a charger of their choice while en route, or up to two weeks in advance" https://electrek.co/2021/05/26/evgo-launches-reservations-charging-program-on-us-west-coast/ AUDI A4 RANGE TO BE TOPPED BY ELECTRIC"Audi’s finalised plans for the all-new A4 include an electric-only four-wheel-drive performance RS model and a hybrid RS4" says Autocar: "Set to challenge the Tesla Model 3 and newly unveiled BMW i4, it is based around the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that has been developed in a joint engineering programme between Audi and Volkswagen Group sibling company Porsche. The PPE platform used by the A4 E-tron will be shared with the upcoming Audi Q6 E-tron, as well as an electric version of the second generation Macan currently under development at Porsche. CHINESE MILITARY REPORTEDLY RESTRICTS USE OF TESLA CARS AMONG PERSONNEL "Citing national security concerns, China is restricting the use of Tesla’s electric vehicles by some state and military personnel, according to a Wall Street Journal report from Friday. A separate report, from Bloomberg, said the cars were banned in certain areas." writes CNBC: "It comes after the country led a security review of the vehicles, where it reportedly found that Tesla’s sensors could record images of their surrounding locations. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, added that Tesla could obtain key data, like when and where the cars are being used. It could also track more personal information, like a cellphone’s contact list if it’s connected to the car, according to the report. China is ultimately concerned the information could be sent back to the United States, according to the Journal article."   "Elon Musk has downplayed espionage concerns from China, saying if its vehicles were used for spying, the company would be shut down. The entrepreneur was speaking at the China Development Forum, hours after a screenshot of an order issued at a military accommodation complex banning Tesla vehicles went viral on Chinese social media." according to South China MOrning Post: "A person familiar with the matter said the ban was issued a couple of weeks ago because Chinese leaders were “very concerned”, adding that Musk might visit China next month.   Elon Musk said: "“If Tesla used cars to carry out espionage activities in China or anywhere, we will get shut down … There’s a strong incentive for us to be confidential"   https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/19/tesla-cars-restricted-among-military-personnel-in-china-report.html   https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3126273/elon-musk-denies-tesla-cars-are-being-used-spying-china   GEELY TARGETING TESLA WITH NEW PREMIUM EV BRAND CALLED ZEEKR "China's Geely plans to roll out electric vehicles under a new marque with different branding and sales strategies, people familiar with the matter said, as the Volvo owner looks to take on its main EV rival Tesla with higher-end vehicles. The brand, positioned in the premium segment and named "Zeekr", will be housed under Geely's to-be-launched EV entity Lingling Technologies, according to three people, who declined to be named as the plan is not yet public. Reuters reported the plans for Lingling last month." says Autoblog: "Geely, the owner of Volvo Cars and 9.7% of Daimler AG, will roll out models under the new marque based on its open-source EV chassis, announced in September and called Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), the sources said."   "While details of Geely’s Zeekr brand are yet to be made public, speculation suggests it could be operated in partnership with Chinese internet services company Baidu. A strategic partnership between Geely, China’s largest private car maker, and Baidu, China’s leader in internet seach operations, was announced in January." according to Autocar: "Geely is set to sell Zeekr models through dedicated sales centres located in city centres using a marketing strategy that departs from its traditional dealership model. It also plans to support vehicles sales with a line of lifestyle-orientated clothing and accessory lines in a move aimed at reaching new customer groups."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/03/19/geely-new-ev-brand-zeekr-tesla-competitor/   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/electric-cars/geely-launch-new-zeekr-brand-global-tesla-rival   TESLA GIGA BERLIN PRODUCTION TO START IN LATE JULY OR AUGUST "According to our German friend on the ground there, it was said today at a meeting of the Brandenburg Committee for Infrastructure and Regional Planning that Tesla Giga Berlin (which is in Brandenburg) will commence production in late July, or August at the latest." repotrs Claen Technica: "While this is perhaps earlier than many expected, there have been signs that Tesla’s Berlin gigafactory (or Brandenburg gigafactory) would get up and running in the first half of the year, or at least by the middle of the year."   On Twitter Alex Voight: "While this is perhaps earlier than many expected, there have been signs that Tesla’s Berlin gigafactory (or Brandenburg gigafactory) would get up and running in the first half of the year, or at least by the middle of the year. In order to start production, the final construction permit still needs to be granted Reviewing all known open points and listening carefully to the people in charge in committee meetings I have no doubt that it will come in right in time.   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/18/tesla-giga-berlin-production-to-start-in-late-july-or-august/   ELECTRAMECCANICA TO PRODUCE SOLO EV IN ARIZONA Canadian designer and manufacturer of electric vehicles ElectraMeccanica has selected Mesa, AZ, in the greater Phoenix area, for its U.S. based assembly facility and engineering technical center. Phoenix ranks as the fifth largest city in the U.S. according to 2020 census data, with nearly 1.8 million residents. Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix, ranks 35th nationally. The proposed facility in Mesa will support ElectraMeccanica’s strategic plan to meet anticipated demand for their flagship SOLO EV. When fully operational, the facility is expected to create up to 500 new jobs and will be capable of producing up to 20,000 SOLOs per year. Engineered for a single occupant, it offers a unique driving experience for the environmentally conscious consumer. The SOLO has a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 80 mph, making it safe for highways.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2021/03/electrameccanica-to-produce-solo-ev-in-arizona/   HYUNDAI OFFERS 250 KWH OF FREE FAST CHARGING TO KONA AND IONIQ WITH ELECTRIFY AMERICA "Hyundai Motor America will provide 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging on Electrify America’s ultra-fast charging network for owners of 2021 Kona Electric and Ioniq Electric models. Customers can access their complimentary charging by the Electrify America mobile app that will also help drivers find and navigate to Electrify America stations and to start a charging session. 250 kilowatt-hours equals about 1,000 miles of EPA-estimated driving range in a 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric or Ioniq Electric." says Green Car Congress.   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/03/20210318-hyundai.html   EVGO PARTNERS WITH MEIJER FOR MIDWEST EV FAST-CHARGING AT UP TO 350 KW The charging network EVgo on Thursday announced a partnership that will install publicly accessible EV fast-charging stations at Meijer supercenter locations in the Midwest. Although EVgo didn’t say exactly how many stations the partnership will include, it plans to start installing them in summer 2021." says Green Car Reports: "At present, the charging provider has more than 800 fast-charging locations, and with more than 250 locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and Wisconsin, Meijer will give EVgo a consistent retail environment—a bit like Electrify America and its Walmart connections.  EVgo’s new chargers will potentially be as fast-charging as some of those offered by Electrify America. They’ll range from 100 kw—enough to charge a Chevy Bolt EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, or Kia Niro EV at full speed—up to the 350 kw that can accomplish an especially speedy charge for the Porsche Taycan."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1131634_evgo-partners-with-meijer-for-midwest-ev-fast-charging-at-up-to-350-kw   VOLKSWAGEN IS TRYING ON-DEMAND FEATURE SUBSCRIPTIONS TOO NOW "There’s a trend unfolding in the auto industry toward subscription services and pay-as-you-go features. BMW made waves last year when it envisioned a future of “unlocking” heated seats, for example, with a one-time or recurring fee. Now Volkswagen is trying something similar with the new all-electric ID.3." according to Jalopnik: "Volkswagen’s pilot program will be rolled out in six cities in Germany this year, according to Autocar, and it will allow owners to enable certain features on demand, like “travel assist, stop and go, lane assist and ACC,” to give a few examples. At the moment, many brands offer on-demand access to certain features, though their impact has been largely restrained to aspects like navigation or little things, like adaptive headlights. As part of this initiative, Volkswagen will also test pay-by-mile billing, in addition to subscription and one-time billing options."   https://jalopnik.com/oh-good-volkswagen-is-trying-on-demand-feature-subscri-1846511749   You can listen to all 1026 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Wiping $3 billion off its market value, Hyundai's stock slid 6.2%. Shares in its affiliate Kia Corp, which had been tipped in local media reports as the likely operational partner for Apple, tumbled 15% — a $5.5 billion hit." according ot Autoblog: "The announcement brings the curtain down on weeks of internal divisions at Hyundai Motor Co Group — parent to both automakers — about the potential partnership with Apple, with some executives raising concerns about becoming a contract manufacturer for the U.S. tech giant in an arrangement reminiscent of electronics firm Foxconn's role in making iPhones."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/08/apple-car-hyundai-kia-collaboration-now-dead/   2020 SAW 10% PLUG-IN SHARE FOR EUROPE More data on 2020, this time from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Electrically-chargeable vehicles saw a similar surge in demand last year, accounting for 10.5% of all new car registrations in the European Union, compared to a 3.0% market share the year before. During the fourth quarter, registrations of electrically-chargeable vehicles (ECV) in the EU jumped from 130,992 units in 2019 to almost half a million (+262.8%), surpassing hybrid electric cars in sales volume for the first time. This strong increase in demand for battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) – with registrations growing by 216.9% and 331.0% respectively – was largely driven by government stimuli for low and zero-emission vehicles. Indeed, some of the biggest gains were seen in countries with the most generous incentives. In Germany, for example, BEV registrations increased by over 500% in the last quarter of 2020.   https://www.acea.be/press-releases/article/fuel-types-of-new-cars-electric-10.5-hybrid-11.9-petrol-47.5-market-share-f   CALIFORNIA: CUMULATIVE PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES REACH 800,000 "The cumulative number of plug-ins sold in California increased to about 800,000 (of course the number is lower due to sales out of the state or accidents/totaledvehicles). For comparison, the total number in the U.S. is almost 1.8 million. EV drivers can use more than 70,000 charging points in California, which means one charging point per over 11 EVs." according to InsideEVs: "Compared to more than 3.1 million cars sold globally in 2020, it seems that the U.S. plug-in market is seriously lagging behind with just about a 10% share out of the global volume."   https://insideevs.com/news/486280/california-cumulative-plugin-car-sales/   CITROËN AMI NAMED ‘MICROCAR OF THE YEAR’ "Starting the year as it means to go on, Citroën’s highly innovative AMI has successfully scooped the ‘Microcar of the Year’ title in the GQ Car Awards 2021. Having already been recognised with Top Gear magazine’s ‘Disruptor Award’ in the BBC Top Gear magazine Electric Awards 2020, the bold and creative AMI has been turning heads of late among industry experts and the public alike" asys EV Obsession: "Ultra-compact yet agile, Citroën AMI makes city travel and parking easy with a length of just 2.41m and a tight turning circle of just 7.20m. Officially classed as an electric quadricycle, AMI is accessible to anyone over the age of 14 in France, with no driver’s license needed."   https://evobsession.com/citroen-ami-named-microcar-of-the-year-in-the-gq-car-awards-2021/   ELECTRIC MOPED STARTUP REVEL LAUNCHES AN EV CHARGING BUSINESS "Revel, the shared electric moped startup, is building a DC fast-charging station for electric vehicles in New York City, the first in a new business venture that will eventually spread to other cities." says TechCrunch: "The company said Wednesday that this new “Superhub,” which is located at the former Pfizer building in Brooklyn, will contain 30 chargers and be open to the public 24 hours a day. This will be the first in a network of Superhubs opened by Revel across New York City, the company said. Revel didn’t build the EV charging infrastructure in-house. Instead, it is using Tritium’s new RTM75 model for the first 10 chargers at its Brooklyn site, which will go live this spring."   https://techcrunch.com/2021/02/03/electric-moped-startup-revel-launches-an-ev-charging-business/   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC AND IONIQ ELECTRIC ADDED TO ‘ONTO’ Hyundai Motor UK has signed an agreement to supply all-inclusive electric car subscription service ‘Onto’ with electric vehicles for 2021. Hyundai will provide ‘Onto’ the new Hyundai KONA Electric Premium SE (64kWh) and the Hyundai IONIQ Electric Premium (38kWh), which will add a total of 275 new cars to Onto’s fleet by March. With this expansion, Hyundai helps the subscription service to further solidify its position as the UK’s largest all-EV fleet. The Kona is £559 and the IONIQ is £449.   Could subscription EVs be for you? Join me this Saturday for a Saturday Special interview with CEO and co-founder Rob Jolly, on how they went from a small trial with taxi drivers to almost 2000 cars.   TESLA'S REPAIR GUIDELINES ARE INSIGHT INTO “PRODUCTION HELL” "Monitoring technical service bulletins on the NHTSA website can be a good method of discovering common issues with a given car and learning what repair procedures look like, especially for secretive manufacturers like Tesla that seem to release repair information only where required by law." says Jalopnik; " The bulletin states that “Certain Model 3 high-voltage batteries may not have a sufficient quantity of bolts for the contactor DC link busbars, which may prevent the vehicle from charging or powering properly” as these busbars connect the battery to the rest of the high voltage system. The TSB [Technical Service Bulletin] follows up with instructions to inspect the terminals if bolts turn out to be missing, as the lack of contact may cause arcing burns on the joints or terminals. Missing bolts are not just limited to the Model 3, as bulletin SB-20-31-012 for the Model Y states that some cars may have missing or loose suspension bolts, which are meant to hold the steering knuckle to the upper control arm. Since this is a potential safety issue, Tesla issued a recall bulletin, which means that all affected vehicles have to be repaired. (TSBs do not require a repair unless there is a customer complaint or a technician notices it while diagnosing another issue.)"   More evidence making cars is HARD - maybe why Apple are still on the fence.   https://jalopnik.com/here-s-how-tesla-tsbs-expose-manufacturing-troubles-1846016877   PANASONIC PLANS TO DEPLOY TESLA 4680 BATTERY CELL PRODUCTION LATER THIS YEAR "Panasonic confirmed that it plans to set up Tesla 4680 battery cell production at GIgafactory Nevada later this year. They expect higher revenue from the Tesla partnership." says electrek: "When Tesla unveiled its plan to produce its own new tabless battery cell in a bigger format with a new chemistry using its own machinery designed in-house last year, some people misunderstood it as Tesla trying to move away from getting battery cells from suppliers. Last year, Panasonic announced plans to produce the Tesla 4680 cell itself. Now the company said that a new production line for the new cell is planned at Gigafactory Nevada for later this year. On top of the new 4680 production capacity from Panasonic at Gigafactory Nevada, Tesla plans to deploy its own production at Gigafactory Berlin and Gigafactory Texas."   https://electrek.co/2021/02/03/panasonic-plans-tesla-4680-battery-cell-production/   SEASIDE POLICE GETTING NEW TESLA MODEL Y CARS "Seaside police are getting an upgrade and some pretty nice rides soon, adding two new luxury Tesla Model Y vehicles." says KION546: "During a Seaside City Council meeting on Thursday night, according to Seaside Police Chief Adbul Pridgen, the department’s fleet averages 26 miles per day."   https://kion546.com/news/top-stories/2021/02/05/seaside-police-getting-new-tesla-model-y-cars/   TESLA MODEL 3 WITH HEATED STEERING WHEEL BEGINS US DELIVERIES "Tesla Model 3 customers who are taking delivery of the newest builds of the all-electric sedan are reporting that their vehicle has a heated steering wheel, a feature Tesla included in some of the “refreshed” versions of its mass-market cars." says Teslrarti: "According to photographs uploaded by the user, the button to activate the heated steering wheel feature is within the “Seat Heaters” menu and can be turned on by pressing the button with a picture of a steering wheel.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-with-heated-steering-wheel-begins-us-deliveries/   TESLA, LINCOLN, AND RAM TOP CONSUMER REPORTS' LIST "Consumer Reports just released its list of most and least-liked car brands, based on its owner satisfaction survey. They asked 369,000 owners whether they’d buy their same car again if given the chance and extrapolated the data for the results. Tesla, Lincoln, and Ram are at the top of the list, and Cadillac, Nissan, and Infiniti round out the bottom." according to THe Drive: "This year, Tesla scored highest on the survey with owners rating their cars a four or five out of five for driving, comfort, and in-cabin electronics. No matter how you feel about Tesla, you have to know that Tesla owners are completely smitten with their cars. As part of the policy, which was duly approved by the Audit Committee of our Board of Directors, we may invest a portion of such cash in certain alternative reserve assets including digital assets, gold bullion, gold exchange-traded funds and other assets as specified in the future. Thereafter, we invested an aggregate $1.50 billion in bitcoin"   "Moreover, we expect to begin accepting bitcoin as a form of payment for our products in the near future, subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis, which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt. "   According to CNBC on 5th Feb 2021: “Bitcoin has a carbon footprint comparable to that of New Zealand, producing 36.95 megatons of CO2 annually, according to Digiconomist. The cryptocurrency consumes more electricity than the entire annual energy consumption of the Netherlands, Cambridge University researchers say."   https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/05/bitcoin-btc-surge-renews-worries-about-its-massive-carbon-footprint.html   73MN FLEET ELECTRIC VEHICLES BY 2030 "The EY consultancy coproduced a new report with Eurelectric looking at electrification in Europe. The consultants identified fleets as having the largest potential for electrification – in particular if incentivised effectively."n says electrive: "EY predicts a 24-fold increase in the total electrified fleet by 2030. As the analysts predict 15% growth anticipated by 2030, the fleet size in Europe would rise to 73 million electric vehicles. Ey also sees four phases, assess, introduce, operate, and scale-up. In practice, this translates to adding a small number of electric vehicles as a trial. Here, feedback and monitoring are essential before deciding to scale up and assess the success of the fleet migration strategy. Obviously, any decision will take into account the TCO that is key to any fleet. Ey suggests that fleet buyers “exercise their bulk purchasing power to secure lower upfront vehicle costs and reduce the total cost of EV ownership or lease.”"   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/03/ey-data-model-suggests-73mn-fleet-electric-vehicles-by-2030/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Regardless of tech or specs, who do you think is designing the best looking EV, and why? Show #779   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 15th May 2020. TESLA'S MILLION MILE BATTERY WILL SLASH COSTS "For months, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has been teasing investors, and rivals, with promises to reveal significant advances in battery technology during a "Battery Day" in late May." says Autoblog: "New, low-cost batteries designed to last for a million miles of use and enable electric Teslas to sell profitably for the same price or less than a gasoline vehicle are just part of Musk's agenda, people familiar with the plans told Reuters. The new “million mile” battery at the center of Tesla's strategy was jointly developed with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) and deploys technology developed by Tesla in collaboration with a team of academic battery experts recruited by Musk, three people familiar with the effort said. Eventually, improved versions of the battery, with greater energy density and storage capacity and even lower cost, will be introduced in additional Tesla vehicles in other markets, including North America, the sources said. Reuters reported exclusively in February that Tesla was in advanced talks to use CATL’s lithium iron phosphate batteries, which use no cobalt, the most expensive metal in EV batteries."   First I have read about it being in China first. Also, CATL being a partner too. Cell to pack technology - rather than cells to modules to packs. Price parity, and possibly even cheaper EVs than fossil cars.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/14/tesla-secret-electric-car-battery-million-mile-lower-cost/   TESLA STARTS BUILDING LONG RANGE MODEL 3 CARS AT CHINA PLANT "Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said on Thursday it had started producing Long Range Model 3 vehicles in its Shanghai factory and aimed to deliver them to customers soon." reports Reuters: "The company said the model would be sold at 344,050 yuan ($48,495), keeping the price steady even after China stops offering generous subsidies from July for electric vehicles that cost more than 300,000 yuan."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-china-price/tesla-starts-building-long-range-model-3-cars-at-china-plant-idUSKBN22Q1BR   CHINA’S MODEL 3 INTERIOR RECEIVES A TIMELY MODEL Y-INSPIRED UPDATE " the latest Model 3 units produced in Gigafactory Shanghai are fitted with both USB Type C charging ports and a wireless charging pad, both of which are utilized in the Tesla Model Y." reckons Teslarati: "Tesla’s use of USB-C and wireless charging capabilities are an advantage for electric car owners. Many mobile devices on the market today are capable of fast-charging with USB-C ports, and flagship devices from premier smartphone makes such as Apple and Samsung are equipped with wireless charging capabilities. Gigafactory Shanghai’s Phase 2 is expected to house a Model Y factory. Currently, the local production plant is poised to hit a production run-rate of 200,000 Model 3 sedans every year."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-china-model-3-model-y-interior-update/   VOLVO CEO SAYS VIRUS WILL ACCELERATE EV ADOPTION Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. Speaking at a Financial Times global digital conference: "Electrification will go faster. I think it would be naive to believe after some months, everything will return to normal, and our customers will come back into a showroom asking for diesel cars. They will ask even more for electric cars. And that is speeding up. If governments subsidize a return to the old world, I think would be a waste of money. They should use the money to promote new technology as they were planning to do before corona. The way we distribute cars, with physical showrooms and so on, I think everybody has learned during this shutdown that e-commerce is working, and more and more people have experience. That will encourage people to look for cars online. So I think the distribution and where you’re selling cars will change. It has been changing already, but that will be changed more rapidly now."   h/t electrek: https://electrek.co/2020/05/14/volvo-ceo-pandemic-will-rapidly-accelerate-shift-to-electric-cars/   ONE FUTURE GM ELECTRIC VEHICLE MAY BE INTRODUCED EARLIER THAN PLANNED "" it looks as though one future GM electric vehicle could even arrive earlier than planned. Vice President of Electric and Autonomous Vehicles at GM, Ken Morris, indicated that one EV program may be pulled forward." says GM Authority: "Morris indicated that several other GM electric vehicle-related plans remained unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that GM’s deal with Honda to produce two new electric vehicles was still moving ahead, and that plans to source new renewable energy from DTE were also on track. Morris also said that GM’s $25 billion budget for EV programs was still in place."   https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/05/one-future-gm-electric-vehicle-may-be-introduced-earlier-than-planned/   DACIA PREPARES TO LAUNCH FIRST EV WITH SPRING MINI-SUV "Dacia’s first electric vehicle, the Spring, which is based on the Renault K-ZE mini-SUV sold in China, will go on sale early next year. The Spring was first revealed as a concept in early March, in an online presentation instead of at the cancelled Geneva auto show. The production version will have a range of “at least” 200 km (124) miles, Dacia says." according to Automotive News Europe: "Dacia has not announced a price, but the City K-ZE sells in China for about 8,000 euros ($8,900). Former Renault Group CEO Thierry Bollore said last year that the automaker was working on an electric vehicle that would sell for 10,000 euros or less."   Car sharing, fleets, hiring, all options   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/dacia-prepares-launch-first-ev-spring-mini-suv?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter   ELECTRIC PANEL VANS FROM CITROEN, PEUGEOT AND VAUXHALL/OPEL Earlier this week I talked about the electric van Citroen e-jumpy, I didn't make clear for UK listeners that it's also known as the e-Dispatch here. So for the UK: "Citroen has launched the ë-Dispatch, the French firm's latest pure-electric van, offering up to 205 miles on a single charge. A 50 kWh pack will allow for a 143 mile range on a charge, whilst the 75 kWh battery offers the headline 205 mile range. Either will power a 100 kW electric motor." says Next Green Car. From Opel we already mentioned the Vivaro-e which is a larger panel van: "The 75kWh battery boasts a range of up to 330 kilometres, or for less intense usage needs, the 50kWh battery has a range of up to 230km (WLTP)." And finally from electrive: "Peugeot has also presented its version of the battery-electric transporter with the e-Expert. The technology is identical to that of its two sister models. Peugeot plans to announce prices in June. The drive train and the batteries are the same for all models: the electric motor known from the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 has an output of 100 kW. In contrast to the small cars, however, two battery sizes are offered in the vans, each with 50 and 75 kWh.  Like the Opel Vivaro-e, Peugeot offers a three-phase AC charger with 11 kW in addition to the standard AC charger with 7.4 kW (single-phase)." With a max payload of 1,210 kg these are useful vans, with towing of 1,000kg.   BYD HAN EV REVEALED AS TESLA MODEL 3 RIVAL The Han EV is the first full-electric passenger car equipped with BYD’s ground-breaking new ‘Blade Battery’ technology – delivering greatly enhanced safety, improved range capability and a simplified, smaller pack design. The innovative battery system also pushes its cruising range up to 605 kilometres (376 miles) on a full charge. The Blade Battery can produce a stable current of up to 800 Amps powering the BYD Han EV. The high-performance silicon carbide motor-control module improves the peak-current capacity by 58%, enabling acceleration from 0 to100km/h (62mph) in just 3.9 seconds. Additionally, the Han is also China’s first mass-produced EV equipped with Bosch’s ‘IPB Intelligent Integrated Brake System’, which not only brings braking safety with higher precision, but also delivers a longer range and improved braking comfort.   MORE ON HYUNDAI 45 EV "Hyundai has been spotted testing a prototype for a compact electric crossover SUV that's expected to be launched in 2021." says MotorAuthority: Hyundai already offers EVs in the form of the battery-electric Ioniq Electric and Kona Electric and fuel cell-electric Nexo, but the new SUV will be the automaker's first vehicle based on a platform designed specifically for battery-electric cars. Called the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), the platform will also likely be used by Kia and Genesis for their own EVs."   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127263_2021-hyundai-45-electric-suv-spy-shots   HOT CUPRA VERSION OF SEAT EL-BORN ELECTRIC CAR IN THE PIPELINE "Cupra, SEAT’s performance-focussed brand, could soon launch a hot version of the el-Born EV. The Spanish brand has recently filed trademark applications for both the “Cupra Born” and “Cupra el-Born” nameplates." writes AutoExpress: "The Cupra el-Born would be based on the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated MEB electric underpinnings. Unlike the standard SEAT el-Born, though, this Cupra variant should feature a more powerful electric motor, supplied by a larger-capacity battery pack. The el-Born concept looks similar in length to a SEAT Leon, but it rides on larger wheels up to 20-inches in diameter. Like all of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB cars, the el-Born also has a long wheelbase relative to its overall length – which should allow it to deliver the interior space of a car from the class above."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/seat/100354/hot-cupra-version-seat-el-born-electric-car-pipeline   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   …it’s back! Show #723   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 20th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   A quick update, I’ve been off my feet with a chest infection which really took all my energy. I thought it was over on Sunday, then Tuesday, and now it’s Friday. No it is NOT Covid-19, in fact it’s the opposite!   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY COPES WITH COVID-19 "Toyota, Honda, and the Big Three have shut down manufacturing plants. Mercedes is keeping its Alabama factory open, but it will probably run out of parts. Tesla may or may not be contradicting a legal order not to produce cars, and Ford doesn’t want to sit on a mountain of repossessed vehicles" reports Jalopnik: "Honda’s plant in Wuhan, China, right near where the outbreak began, is back up and running!" "   According to Bloomberg: "Daimler AG’s U.S. sport utility vehicle factory is at risk of shutting down because of a shortage of parts coming from Europe, according to a notice sent to workers. "   And from Gene at Teslarati: "Tesla will temporarily suspend production at its factory in Fremont, California and Buffalo, New York beginning on March 24 in response to local “shelter in place” mandates to prevent the spread of coronavirus, said the company on Thursday. The company notes that operations at its Nevada factory, along with its other facilities including its service and Supercharger network will remain operational."   https://jalopnik.com/the-automotive-industry-is-grinding-to-an-undignified-h-1842410744   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-factory-coronavirus-shutdown-march-24/   CAN EV MAKERS SURVIVE A SHUTDOWN? "Morgan Stanley says that Tesla (TSLA) is strong enough financially to afford “several months of near shutdown of operations” at its Fremont factory" writes Electrek   Pierre Ferrago at New Street said: "Tesla can survive 5 quarters with cash on hand if its Fremont Factory is shut-down. Tesla has $2.9bn of available cash. At a $600m cash burn per quarter it can hence self-finance operations for 5 quarters. Conclusion: even in an extreme scenario Tesla can self-finance operations multiple quarters. In such a scenario, Tesla would obviously take remedial actions (ramping Shanghai production, moving production to Nevada). Our take on a more likely scenario (20-40% slowdown in units) here."   What about NIO? "The Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio raised substantial doubt in its ability to continue its business due to on-going financial difficulties that have been exacerbated by the coronavirus. The reduced EV subsidies in China also played a part." reports Nora at Electrive: "Nio said in a statement: “The Company’s cash balance is not adequate to provide the required working capital and liquidity for continuous operation in the next 12 months. The Company’s continuous operation depends on the Company’s capability to obtain sufficient external equity or debt financing.” Such external financing could have come from Hefei’s city government. However, the agreement to raise more than 10 billion yuan and set up new manufacturing facilities isn’t final yet."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/03/19/electric-carmaker-nio-is-lacking-liquidity/   NISSAN GOES ALL ELECTRIC FOR NEW CARS IN JAPAN " Nissan Motor will sell electric-drive versions of all new and redesigned models to hit the Japanese market starting in fiscal 2020 as it shifts further away from gasoline power under tighter emissions rules, Nikkei has learned." says nikkei.com: "The automaker will roll out an electric sport utility vehicle as early as the second half of 2020 and an electric version of its mainstay Dayz minicar in 2021. Hybrids will use the company's proprietary e-Power system. Nissan aims to generate 50% of sales in Europe and 30% in China from electric-drive vehicles in fiscal 2022."   https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Nissan-goes-all-electric-for-new-cars-in-Japan   ABB COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF CHINESE EV CHARGING PROVIDER CHARGEDOT ABB has completed its acquisition of a majority stake in Chargedot Shanghai New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (“Chargedot”). The transaction was announced on October 28, 2019. Since its establishment in 2009, Shanghai-based Chargedot has made a significant contribution to the uptake of electric vehicles in China. The company supplies AC and DC charging stations, as well as the necessary software platform to a range of customers that includes EV manufacturers, EV charging network operators and real estate developers. The acquisition is expected to further strengthen ABB’s relationship with leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers and broaden the company’s e-mobility portfolio with hardware and software developed specifically for local requirements as well as service offerings.   THE NEXT BMW 7 SERIES LINEUP WILL INCLUDE AN ALL-ELECTRIC CAR "BMW's next-generation Series 7 luxury sedan models will include an all-electric version, according to Autocar. The automaker has announced at a press conference that the next 7 Series vehicles will come in four versions: one with a gasoline-burning engine, a diesel version, a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric car. " says Engadget: ", Oliver Zipse, BMW's Chairman of the Board of Management, told attendees that the all-electric version will be the most powerful among the four. the zero-emission 7 Series model will be powered by BMW's fifth-generation electric technology -- the same one that'll power the i4. The next 7 Series cars don't have a solid launch date yet, but since the current generation won't go out of production until 2022, we'll still have to wait a few more years."   https://www.engadget.com/2020/03/18/bmw-7-series-electric-car/   ALL-ELECTRIC PORSCHE MACAN WILL START PRODUCTION BY END OF 2022 "There’s no question that Porsche isn’t shy about moving to the electric world. Barring small operations such as Rimac, Porsche seems more aggressive than all others in the supercar realm then it comes to embracing EV power. We’ve known for a while that the Macan will go fully electric, but a new report from Automobilwoche gives us insight into a timeframe." says Motor1: "Perhaps more interesting is that rumors also suggest the Macan will go entirely electric starting in 2024. That’s a gutsy move from Porsche, as the Macan has become the company’s best-selling vehicle in a relatively short amount of time."   https://www.motor1.com/news/405150/electric-porsche-macan-production-2022/   2020 KIA NIRO EV: PRICE HIKE BRINGS BIGGER INFOTAINMENT SCREENS BUT NO EXTRA RANGE ""The 2020 Kia Niro (2019 model pictured) has changed slightly. It costs $590 more versus 2019, adding up to a starting price of $40,210 after factoring in the $1,120 destination fee. " says Green Car Reports: "The price hike applies both to the base EX version of the Niro EV as well as the better-equipped EX Premium. But features have been stepped up along with that.  Both of the 2020 versions include upgraded infotainment screens. Echoing changes given to the 2020 Kia Niro Hybrid, the Niro EV gets new 8.0 and 10.25-inch touchscreens replace the 7.0-inch and 8.0-inch units currently offered in the EX and Premium, respectively. The Niro EV carries forward with its 239-mile EPA range rating. We’ve observed some impressive real-world range from the Niro EV—range that might, in cooler temps especially, top the greater 258-mile range offered in the Hyundai Kona Electric."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127504_2020-kia-niro-ev-price-hike-brings-bigger-infotainment-screens-but-no-extra-range   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC MADE IN EUROPE "Hyundai finally started the delivery of the Kona Electric made at its European manufacturing plant, in Czech Republic. Current European production is at 150 Kona Electrics per day and Hyundai plans to produce over 35.000 units in 12 months." writes PushEVs: "The batteries will by produced in Europe, reducing the distance the component needs to travel. Hyundai will also give customers the opportunity to track the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of their Kona Electric. Once ordered, the ETA tool makes it possible to track the car from production to final shipment. In 2020, Hyundai expects to deliver more than 80,000 units of zero-emission vehicles to European customers, including the Kona Electric, IONIQ Electric "   https://pushevs.com/2020/03/16/hyundai-starts-delivery-of-kona-electric-made-in-europe/   IN FEBRUARY 2020, RENAULT SOLD ALMOST 7,500 ELECTRIC CARS "In Europe, close to 9% of total Renault passenger car sales were electric." reports InsideEVs: "February was the second-best month for all-electric car sales by Renault, which globally (mostly in Europe) sold 7,485 units (88% more than a year ago).As the French manufacturer sells EVs mostly in Europe, which currently fights with the coronavirus outbreak, it will be difficult to match January's record of 10,819 in the next couple of months."   https://insideevs.com/news/404795/february-2020-renault-electric-car-sales/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Returns soon!   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 240 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #684   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 1st February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ONLY TWO VERSIONS OF TESLA MODEL Y NOW EXIST IN DESIGN STUDIO "Tesla recently updated its online design studio for the all-new Tesla Model Y, which as we know already entered production and will be delivered to first customers this quarter." reports InsideEVs: "Long Range AWD and Performance Long Range AWD. There is no sign of the Long Range RWD and Standard Range RWD any more, which suggests that those versions will not be available, at least not in the initial phase. "   From the Tesla.com support page: "How much does it cost to place an order for Model Y? The cost to place an order for Model Y is $100 USD non-refundable order fee. The full payment for the total cost of your car will be collected at delivery. When will Model Y production begin? We recommend checking the Model Y design studio for your region’s most up-to-date production estimates. Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is not scheduled for production at this time. Can I edit or cancel my Model Y order? You can edit or cancel your Model Y order in your Tesla Account. Pre-orders can request a full refund of their deposit from their Tesla Account."   Calling Tesla fans - isn't that $100 a change down from $2500. Now it's a non-refundable order fee.   https://insideevs.com/news/395856/two-versions-tesla-model-y-design-studio/   ORDERS OPEN FOR NEW VW E-UP! "Volkswagen has opened the order books for the revised e-up!, now featuring a range of 159 miles on a charge. The new version of the pure-electric citycar sees a significant range increase from the previous model's 83 mile rating. This is primarily because of the new 32.2 kWh battery - up from 18.7 kWh" says Chris Lilly at NExt Green Car: "Because of its place within the up! range, the e-up! also benefits from recent equipment boosts, including multifunciton camera with lane assist and smartphone integration cradle. Heated front seats and windscreen, climate control, automatic wipers, and cruise control are also fitted as standard to the electric up!. Prices start at £19,695, including Plug-in Car Grant, with orders being taken now."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8842/orders-open-for-new-vw-eup/   LINCOLN WILL BUILD AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE USING EV STARTUP RIVIAN’S TECH "The Lincoln Motor Company has confirmed it’s developing an all-electric vehicle that will be powered by tech from EV startup Rivian." reports The Verge: "Lincoln’s parent company, Ford, announced a $500 million investment in Rivian in April 2019, and said it would build an electric vehicle on the startup’s platform (basically the battery, electric motors, and all the other tech that makes an EV go). It was reported in the months following that the vehicle would be a Lincoln SUV, but Ford’s luxury marque had not confirmed any parts of those reports until today."   https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/29/21113578/lincoln-rivian-electric-suv-ford-platform-tech   TESLA'S GIANT HOME BATTERY IS PAYING FOR ITSELF "Four years ago, Tesla installed its first ever Powerwall battery pack in an Australian household, and now the residing Pfitzner family has revealed just how much of an impact the energy-saving measure has made." picks up TechRadar: "When combined with a solar panel system, Powerwall allows users to store any excess energy generated by the panels in order to use it at times when the sun alone can’t provide the necessary power.  Over the course of four years, this resulted in the Pfitzner family saving a total of about $5,700 (AU$8,463) on their electricity bills, paying an average of just 30 cents (AU$0.46) per day. It’s worth noting that the family spent AU$16,000 (about $10,800) installing the battery, solar system, and any related hardware to the home, so it hasn’t quite paid itself off yet."   https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/worlds-first-tesla-powerwall-is-paying-itself-off-much-faster-than-expected   TESLA PARTNERS WITH LG CHEM, CATL FOR BATTERY SUPPLY " Tesla Inc has entered into a partnership with South Korea’s LG Chem and China’s CATL for supply of batteries used in its electric cars, the company said on Wednesday. Tesla, which has a long-standing battery supply agreement with Japan’s Panasonic Corp (6752.T), said its pact with LG Chem and CATL was at a smaller scale." says Reuters: "Last year, Reuters reported on Tesla’s talks with LG Chem to source batteries for vehicles to be made in its Shanghai plant. A source had also told Reuters that the electric carmaker may source batteries from CATL in the future."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-china-catl/tesla-partners-with-lg-chem-catl-for-battery-supply-idUSKBN1ZT16G   BYD BUILDS NEW LITHIUM-POWERED FORKLIFT FACILITY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA "BYD continues to sprint towards electrifying every vehicle category in the world with news today that it is adding an electric forklift shipping and receiving facility in the Southern California city of Rancho Dominguez." according to CleanTechnica: "BYD believes its lithium-powered forklifts are game changers as they extend the life expectancy of the battery pack significantly compared to their lead-acid predecessors. A 90-minute charge time helps them to stay fully topped up with minimal downtime throughout a shift or day."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/30/byd-builds-new-lithium-powered-forklift-plant-in-southern-california/   2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC BOASTS 37% MORE DRIVING RANGE, NOW STARTING AT $33,045 Hyundai Motor America announced prices for the eco-friendly 2020 IONIQ Electric car.   The redesigned 2020 IONIQ Electric delivers 170 miles of range, technology and advanced standard safety features at a starting price of $33,045 for the well-equipped SE model. Customers may receive the available federal tax credit of up to $7,500 making the net price $25,545 for the SE model. The top-of-the-line Limited is available for $38,615 ($31,115 net with federal tax credit) and now offers the following optional features: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Highway Drive Assist, 10.25-inch navigation system and Harman Kardon premium audio.     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If I could one something extra in 2020 with EV News Daily, what would it be? Show #634   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th November 2019. PORSCHE IS SETTING UP ELECTRIC CAR INSURANCE FOR THE TAYCAN "With the launch of the Taycan, Porsche Financial Services is now offering not only established motor vehicle insurance but also a policy specially tailored to electric cars." reports electrive: "According to the press release, the new policy supplements the existing Porsche CarPolicy with, for example, special protection for the battery and charging station as well as mobility protection. Porsche did not give any information on the policy’s costs or detailed conditions in the press release."   “A highlight of ‘E-Cover’ is the original price protection for the battery in the event of damage. Extensive cyber protection is another innovative component of the product”.   https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/07/porsche-is-setting-up-electric-car-insurance-for-the-taycan/   MAERSK TO PILOT 600 KWH CONTAINERIZED BATTERY SYSTEM ON CONTAINER SHIP "A containerized 600 kWh marine battery system will be installed in a trial on board the Maersk Cape Town in December 2019 to improve vessel performance and reliability while reducing CO2 emissions." says Green Car Congress: "Propelling marine vessels with battery power alone is still years away from being a technically- and economically-viable option, Maersk says. However marine battery systems can be used to improve the efficiency of a vessel’s onboard electrical systems such as the Maersk Cape Town’s generators. By maintaining the vessel’s auxiliary generators at a more optimal load, and avoiding running generators when not needed, overall fuel consumption can be reduced."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191107-maersk.html   PRICES AND SPECS REVEALED FOR CITROËN C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID "Citroën has launched a plug-in hybrid version of its C5 Aircross SUV, bringing CO2 emissions of 39g/km and a 31-mile electric-only range to aid fleets looking to go greener." according to Fleetworld:" Priced from £35,340 and starting deliveries in mid-2020, the C5 Aircross Hybrid combines a PureTech 180hp petrol engine, a 109hp electric motor and an ë-EAT8 automatic gearbox. with a 100% electric range of up to 31 miles / 50km, The 13.2kWh battery is covered by an eight-year / 100,000 mile warranty to guarantee up to 70% of its charge capacity, and can be charged in less than two hours thanks to the standard 7.4KW on board charger."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/prices-and-specs-revealed-for-citroen-c5-aircross-hybrid/   DTM REVEALS A 1,000 HP CONCEPT FOR AN ALL-ELECTRIC RACING SERIES DTM—also known as Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters—has introduced a 1,000 horsepower concept of the future for what will inevitably be an all-electric (or an all-hydrogen) series. That’s a pretty massive upgrade from the series’ current 600 HP combustion engines." reports Jalopnik: "A press release makes it very clear that this newer, more eco-friendly series will run alongside DTM without actually replacing it just yet. Källenius mentioned that there had been discussions to eliminate the iconic model. Apparently, instead, it will be electrified."   https://electrek.co/2019/11/07/mercedes-benz-chief-confirms-all-electric-g-class-wagon-in-the-works/   ELECTRIFICATION FOR TRUCKING FROM TEVVA "On Wednesday, electric commercial vehicle pioneer Tevva unveiled its Electrify initiative, aiming to drive the electrification of medium-duty HGVs through the deployment of up to 50 electric trucks across the United Kingdom and Europe over the next six months." according to GreenBiz: "Tevva has developed a package of EV technologies tailored for HGV vehicles, including battery packs, fleet management systems and advanced cloud-based software that uses geofencing capabilities to autonomously control a range extender and ensure vehicles can switch to zero-emissions mode to optimize efficiency and minimize air pollution in built-up areas."   https://www.greenbiz.com/article/poo-and-power-electrification-and-manure-offer-competing-paths-decarbonize-hgvs     2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC RANGE BOOSTED TO 170 MILES FOR VERY EFFICIENT EV "The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric gets a big range boost—up to 170 EPA-rated miles, according to results posted Tuesday by the federal agency." says Green Car Reports: "The pack goes up from 28 kwh in the 2019 model to about 38 kwh in the 2020 model.  EPA test info also confirm that the U.S.-spec Ioniq Electric will get the same motor upgrade given to versions in other markets—raising output to 134 hp (100 kw), from 118 hp (88 kw)."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125897_2020-hyundai-ioniq-electric-range-boosted-to-170-miles-for-very-efficient-ev   FORD MUSTANG-INSPIRED ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT ALMOST CAMO FREE "The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV unveiling is scheduled for November 17, ahead of the LA Auto Show, but we already obtained photos of a barely disguised prototype." says InsideEVs: "It seems that the new long-range electric Ford is more like a crossover than an actual SUV. Show #564   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 28th August 2019. Hello to new PATREON PRODUCER CRAIG DALEY, and EXECUTIVE PRODUCER GEOFF LOWE!   Thank you to Pinky Clark on Apple Podcasts: "Absolutely excellent, very knowledgeable about all things electric and more, saves me time having to go through the internet searching for the top stories. Thanks to Mr Lee my next car will be electric!"   TESLA STARTS SELLING ITS OWN CAR INSURANCE IN CALIFORNIA "Tesla on Wednesday announced that it is now offering Tesla Insurance to customers in California. The company said its offering may be as much as 30% less than other insurance plans, although it did not provide specific costs." reports CNBC: "Tesla Insurance is only available in California to start, but the company said it will “expand to additional U.S. states in the future.” Tesla customers in California can get a quote in as little as a minute, and those who have already ordered cars can request a quote with their vehicle identification number. Tesla Insurance can be canceled at any time, Tesla said."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/28/tesla-starts-selling-its-own-car-insurance-in-california.html   FEDS TESTING CAMERAS TO REPLACE SIDEVIEW MIRROR "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration takes a step into the motoring future by announcing a test of how side-mounted cameras could replace conventional mirrors. The agency specifically wants to know how the tech affects driving behavior and lane changes, according to Reuters." picked up by Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Sideview camera systems are already available on a few models in Europe in Japan, but regulations currently keep the tech off of American roads. NHTSA doesn't yet offer a time frame for when the agency could modify the rules to allow them in the U.S. The Honda E will come standard with side-mounted cameras upon its arrival in Europe in 2020.Audi embraces the tech on its E-Tron electric crossover. European models are available with optional side-view cameras. Like the competing systems, drivers can select the view that they prefer from them."   https://www.motor1.com/news/367566/side-camera-nhtsa-testing/   AUDI E-TRON 50 IN NORWAY PRICED 25% LOWER THAN E-TRON 55 "Audi announced in Norway prices of the e-tron 50, a slimmed-down version of the e-tron 55 with only a 71 kWh battery instead of 95 kWh. As it turns out, the Launch Edition at 499,000 NOK (€49,940/$55,432) is about 25% cheaper than the e-tron 55 (662,900 NOK) which is about exactly the same as the difference in battery capacity (24 kWH or 25%) and range (300 km or 408 km WLTP)." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "Interesting finding from Teslarati is also that the e-tron 50 is now comparably priced to the Tesla Model 3 Performance (499,900 NOK), which however can go up to 530 km (329 miles) under WLTP test cycle. In U.S. Audi e-tron 55 starts at $74,800 (before destination charge and federal tax credit deduction), which means that the e-tron 50 might start at $56,100 with over 150 miles of EPA range (if it will be offered)"   https://insideevs.com/news/367683/audi-e-tron-50-priced-25-lower-e-tron-55/   RENAULT’S SECRET CALENDAR REVEALS TWO NEW BEVS "In the newest Renault’s secret calendar, we can see the already announced arrival of the Renault ZOE 2 scheduled for September, but also two new BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) for the coming years. The first comes in 2021 and it’s a compact SUV." Pedro at Push EVs says: "I imagine it as an electric version of the Renault CAPTUR II, aiming to become an alternative to the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia e-Soul and DS 3 CROSSBACK E-Tense. The upcoming BEVs from Renault will be built on the new CMF-EV platform shared with other Alliance’s partners, such as Nissan and Mitsubishi. Meaning that we’ll see similar electric cars from other Alliance’s members. For example, Nissan is considering to have an electric version of the upcoming Nissan Juke 2."   https://pushevs.com/2019/08/28/renaults-secret-calendar-reveals-two-new-bevs/   CHEVY CORVETTE C8 HYBRID POSSIBLY SPIED FOR THE FIRST TIME "Rumors of a Chevy Corvette C8 hybrid have been swirling for months, long before the mid-engine offering debuted last month. A day after the reveal, a member of the Corvette team only stoked the fires of speculation about a hybrid model. Now, a new video from the TFLnow YouTube channel shows two Chevy Corvette C8 prototypes with orange electrical cords sticking out from the front trunk. They’re not subtle at all, the orange cords all but calling attention to themselves against the black and white camouflage." says Motor1.com: "The video comes as Car and Driver published a report about future Corvette models, including the long-rumored hybrid offering. According to the publication, Chevy will put a powerful electric motor where the front trunk is located."   https://www.motor1.com/news/367673/c8-corvette-hybrid-spied-video/   SEAT ANNOUNCES PLUG-IN HYBRID VERSION OF TARRACO LARGE SUV "SEAT announced a world premiere of a plug-in hybrid version of its largest SUV - Tarraco and a new sporty FR trim at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The Tarraco FR PHEV, just like the CUPRA Formentor, will be equipped with a 13 kWh battery, which is promised to translate into more than 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric range." according to InsideEVs: "Also, the front-wheel-drive powertrain with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine and 85 kW electric motor is the same. According to provisional specs, the Tarraco FR PHEV will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.4 seconds. The production will take place at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. SEAT intends to start taking orders for the Tarraco FR PHEV in 2020."   https://insideevs.com/news/367515/seat-tarraco-fr-phev-large-suv/   NEW IONIQ ELECTRIC GETS MORE RANGE As of its launch in 2016, IONIQ was the world’s first car planned from the start to offer three electrified powertrains – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric. The IONIQ is now already upgrading its offer, with added technological features and a refreshed look. Drivers of the new IONIQ Electric can also enjoy 36% added energy capacity and real-world 311-km range of thanks to an upgraded 38.3-kWh battery. Its e-motor delivers a maximum power of 136 PS and 295 Nm of torque and is fitted standard with a 7.2-kW on-board charger - an upgrade from current 6.6-kW – for Type 2 AC charging. Using a 100-kW fast-charging station, the battery can reach 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes."   https://www.hyundai.news/uk/press-kits/new-ioniq-electric-gets-important-enhancements/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week.   Asking current EV drivers, how often do you charge and why?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 246 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #461   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 2nd May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC WITH UPGRADED 38.3-KWH BATTERY "The new Hyundai IONIQ family is finally unveiled with updated hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions. Let’s see some highlights about the one that matters, the electric. I really like the new Hyundai IONIQ Electric and I think that more range with a lower charging rate at DC fast chargers is a good trade-off, especially considering that the on-board charger was upgraded. Higher range gives us more freedom to avoid expensive and overcrowded DC fast chargers and charge at home – where charging is more convenient and a lot cheaper." says Pedro at PushEVs.   "The new IONIQ Electric’s battery has been upgraded from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh, meaning drivers can go even further between charges. It boasts 36% additional energy storage capacity, offering a total of 294 kms of range (internal target under WLTP regulations). Its e-motor delivers a maximum power of 136 PS and 295 Nm of torque and is fitted standard with a 7.2-kW on-board charger – an upgrade from current 6.6-kW – for Type 2 AC charging. Using a 100-kW fast-charging station, the battery can reach 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes. As well as the new convenience features, the new IONIQ’s reimagined interior incorporates new design factors to enhance its sophisticated image. In addition to standard black seat trims, customers have the option of four leather seat colours: Black, Gray two-tone, Red Umber (exclusive for hybrid and plug-in) and Electric Shadow (exclusive to electric version). Meanwhile, the dashboard garnish arrives in Dark Chrome Accent."   "The new IONIQ’s leading safety package includes Front Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection with new Cyclist Detection ability and Driver Attention Warning. Lane Keeping Assist and High Beam Assist also come standard. Optionally available as well are Lane Following Assist which keeps the car in the middle of a lane so drivers can navigate safely even in heavy traffic during rush hour, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning that uses the front camera and information from the navigation system to identify road speed signs and displays the speed limit and no-passing signs in real time. Using the radar sensor to detect the distance from the car in front, Smart Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Leading Vehicle Departure Alert maintains a preset distance to automatically stop and depart again according to traffic conditions. Additional options include Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning. Taking a cue from its similarly innovative Kona Electric sibling, as a maximum use of regenerative braking technology, the new IONIQ Electric adopts 1-pedal driving capability, which allows drivers to stop the car by simply holding onto the left paddle shift lever with often no need to engage the braking pedal. Working thus via Smart Regenerative Braking, the level of energy recuperation is automatically adjusted depending on the road incline and traffic situation in front when coasting. The new IONIQ Electric also features Eco+, which supplements the standard Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes. By selecting the Eco+ mode, drivers reduce their energy consumption and the car’s remaining energy can be extended during unforeseeable emergency situations."   https://pushevs.com/2019/05/02/new-hyundai-ioniq-family/   TESLA IS NOT ALLOWING RANGE UPGRADE ON NEW 150 KM MODEL 3 IN CANADA "Tesla launched a new, cheaper Model 3 with 150km range in Canada to get access to the new $5,000 federal incentive, but we’re now learning that the company is not offering any range upgrade on that new version of the Model 3 — effectively making the vehicle unsellable." says Fred at Electrek.   “To be eligible for incentives, a vehicle must have a base-model manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000 for passenger vehicles with six or fewer seats, and less than $55,000 for vehicles with seven or more seats. For eligible vehicles with six or fewer seats, higher priced versions (trims) are eligible as long as the final manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $55,000 or less.”   "It disqualified Tesla’s vehicles from being eligible to the incentive because the base Model 3, which is only available as an “off-the-menu item”, starts at $47,000. In response earlier this week, Tesla has lowered the price of the vehicle to $44,999 in Canada, but it also software-locked the vehicle to only 150 km (93 miles) of range. Tesla has done that in the past, but the automaker offered to unlock the range as an option for a cost similar to the original cost before the range decrease. Buyers in Canada reached out to us saying that Tesla salespeople were saying that they were not aware of any such upgrade in this case. We contacted a Tesla spokesperson about the situation and the automaker confirmed that they are not offering any range upgrade through a software update for the base version at $45,000."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/02/tesla-model-3-range-upgrade-canada/   TESLA SEEKS CAPITAL RAISE OF OVER $2 BILLION "Tesla Inc will raise up to $2.3 billion in new capital, renouncing what Elon Musk called a “Spartan diet” and easing Wall Street concerns about the money-losing company’s ability to overcome a drop in sales and build new product lines." reports Reuters: "Before Tesla’s announcement on Thursday, however, analysts speculating about a capital raise had cautioned that the company had missed optimal timing - last year’s third quarter, when the company posted a profit. Tesla has reported four profitable quarters since it went public in June 2010."   "Tesla needs some $2 billion of additional capital to finance its expansions after the huge $700 million in losses in the first quarter. Funds will be raised in two ways: issues of new shares - up to $650 million (+15% option for underwriters) issues of new debt - up to $1,350 million (+ 15% option for underwriters) Total up to $2 billion ($2.3 billion including 15% option for underwriters)"   "Tesla has 2.2 billion of cash and equivalent, which is great but not enough to continue rapid expansion. Besides the new Gigafactory 3 in China, the company needs to launch the Model Y and more products after that. Capital expenditures plan is:   2019: $2-2.5 billion 2020: $2.5-3 billion 2021: $2.5-3 billion"   THE E-GOLF. ZERO EMISSION AND NOW 0% PCP "Volkswagen’s e-Golf is now available, for a limited period only, with 0% PCP Finance, making this car more affordable and more accessible than ever before. Plus, customers wishing to move into the new Volkswagen ID. will be able to do so easily, thanks to a special new 2-year PCP solution." reports The Avondhu: "The e-Golf starts from €35,995 after Government incentives and now with 0% PCP starts from as little as €349 per month. The e-Golf Executive Edition offers the ‘ultimate e-Golf’ and costs from €39,495 or with 0% PCP from as little as €379 per month."   https://avondhupress.ie/the-e-golf-zero-emission-and-now-0-pcp/   NISSAN BUMPS UP LEAF BASE PRICE IN UK "Despite competing in a tough new car market, Nissan thinks it deserves to give its still-fresh Leaf a price hike in the UK. A Nissan official told Autocar this week the price change is due to, "market demands and other influences, such as inflation and cost base." Considering the company's Sunderland plant supplies the Leaf to the UK and surrounding countries, those "other influences" sound like they could be related to uncertainty of Britain's exit from the European Union – and uncertainty as to how long the " according to Za at InsideEVs.com: "The Leaf's base price jumps to £27,995, up £1,805, even after the government subsidy of £3,500. That's in a class that includes the likes of the Volkswagen e-Golf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, and it's for the base model rated at 168 miles of range in the UK. However, the Leaf e+ (Leaf Plus in the U.S.) is now in full production for the UK and boasts much more standard equipment and 239 miles of range, which is more competitive with the likes of the Kia e-Niro."   WILLIAMS ADVANCED ENGINEERING TO DESIGN AND SUPPLY BESPOKE BATTERIES FOR EXTREME E Extreme E announced Wednesday a new partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, to supply batteries for the newly-launched electric SUV off-road racing series – set to commence on its first voyage in January 2021. The batteries will be specially-designed and developed by Williams, plugging into the expertise and experience of the same minds who assembled the batteries and cells for the first four seasons of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Made to withstand extreme environments, conditions and terrains, the batteries will be compatible with Formula E-specification motors and produce a maximum power output of 470 kW (equivalent to approx. 630 bhp). Williams will put batteries into production, ready to provide teams with identical 54 kWh battery packs – to be used in the first two seasons of Extreme E.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. And what about the Kia Soul EV with 64kWh battery? I wonder because this is a U.S. list, and an American recently described the Kia Soul EV as a "compliance car".   https://www.myev.com/research/comparisons/the-longest-range-electric-vehicles-for-2019/slide-9   HALF OF UK DRIVERS WANT TO BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY IN 2019 Around half of UK drivers want to become more environmentally friendly in 2019, with many planning to change the way they use their cars or buy a more economical vehicle. That’s the conclusion of research by used car website AA Cars, which surveyed more than 22,000 drivers." says James Fossdyke for motor1.com: "The poll revealed that 50 percent of motorists wanted to change their driving habits in some way, with many making changes to their driving habits. Almost one in five (17 percent) said they planned to use their car less, saying they wanted to ditch their wheels for journeys where they could walk or cycle. And around one in 10 (nine percent) said they planned to buy an electric or hybrid car in the coming months."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/302112/drivers-plan-go-eco-friendly/   VOLKSWAGEN WILL PRODUCE ITS OWN CAR BATTERIES "Volkswagen's been trying to claw back its credibility with an ambitious commitment to EVs ever since its $18.2 billion dollar emissions scandal. Its lofty production goals aside, the German manufacturer's latest green move could see it kickstart Europe's car battery industry." according to Engadget: "In back-to-back announcements, VW said today that it will start building car batteries -- as well as recycling old cells -- and mobile EV charging stations (which are heading to the streets of its hometown of Wolfsburg in the first half of this year). VW is promising to pump $870 million (£754 million) into the venture by 2020. VW says: "The changeover from conventional powertrains to e-mobility is an issue that is more important for Group Components than for any other unit of the Volkswagen Group, as the new brand produced more than 10 million conventional vehicle engines and over 8 million gearboxes, for example, in 2018. Battery systems are being developed and produced at the Brunswick components plant – in future the production portfolio will include batteries for MEB vehicles of various Group brands. When batteries reach the end of their service lives in vehicles, some of them will be transferred to other applications – for example in new products such as the flexible fast charging station."   https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-group-components-well-positioned-for-the-future-4599   2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC GETS PRICE INCREASE "Just a week ago, Hyundai began selling its 2019 IONIQ Electric in other CARB states, rather than just California. According to a recent story by CarsDirect, within three days of the sales expansion, the automaker bumped up the EV’s price by more than $500." says Stephen Loveday at InsideEVs.com: "This price increase makes the IONIQ Electric more expensive that its top rival, the 2019 Nissan LEAF. The LEAF starts at $29,990, plus an $895 destination charge. This puts it at $30,885, which is $350 less than the Hyundai. The IONIQ Electric was priced at $30,700 in early January. Now, Hyundai has increased its MSRP to $31,235."   https://insideevs.com/2019-hyundai-ioniq-electric-price-increase/   TESLA APPLIES FOR SERIES OF PATENTS FOR NEW AI CHIP IN AUTOPILOT HARDWARE 3.0 "Tesla is working on an important new product that it claims will enable them to bring full self-driving capability to its vehicles: a new AI chip, or “neural net accelerator’, to be released in the Autopilot Hardware 3.0 computer upgrade." according to Fred Lambert at Electrek: "We have now uncovered a series of new patent applications from Tesla about this new computer. As previously reported, Tesla hired a team of chip architects and executives from AMD back in 2016 and they are now led by former Apple chip architect Peter Bannon to deliver the new computer to power Tesla’s self-driving system." One of the comments from Preston Crow details why he thinks this patent has now been filed: "This indicates that they are about to start shipping the new computer. Once you start shipping, there's a limit on how long you can wait to file a patent on the technology. In some places it's six months, in some places it's a year." Also remember the middle of next week is the Q4 earnings call. Some things are a coincidence, others are done for a reason. I'll be listening closely next week for any mention of their neural net.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/25/teslaf-patents-ai-chip-autopilot-hardware-3-0/   BOSCH BUYS OUT DAIMLER'S STAKE IN ELECTRIC MOTOR JOINT VENTURE The German auto parts maker Bosch announced today that it had exercised an option in their agreement to buy out Daimler from a joint project EM-Motive. EM-Motive makes the motors which power EVs, and not just Daimlers. A Thomson Reuters report said: "EM-Motive, which currently supplies Daimler, Porsche, Fiat, Volvo, Peugeot and start-up carmaker Streetscooter with electric motors, wants to keep targeting new customers, Bosch said. Daimler said EM-Motive will remain a supplier and that it continues to source electric motors from a number of suppliers worldwide. Daimler workers have campaigned to bring development and production of electric motors in-house, ending the German carmaker's reliance on external suppliers."   (Reporting by Edward Taylor; Editing by Douglas Busvine and Elaine Hardcastle)   https://www.usnews.com/news/technology/articles/2019-01-24/bosch-buys-out-daimlers-stake-in-electric-motor-joint-venture   https://electrek.co/2019/01/24/strike-electric-motorcycle-pre-order/   ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE FIELDS GROWS I really love the videos made by Micah Toll for his YouTube channel 'E Bike School' and also his recent articles joining Electrek is a contributor. In an article today about Lightning Motorcycles on Electrek, they say: "With impressive specs including a 150 mph (241 km/h) top speed, 150 mile (242 km) range, 35 minute DC fast charging and a base price of just $12,998, the Lightning Strike received praise far and wide despite the only image of the bike being its front headlights." And in a surprise move, the company announced today they'll start taking orders with just a $500 deposit. So Electrek took a look at the other EV bike makers out there: "Italian company Energica has been producing electric sports bikes for years, with a number of high performance 150+ mph models. Harley Davidson’s electric LiveWire has also just begun pre-sales, though the price was set at a whopping $29,799. The upcoming Zero SR/F is still largely a mystery, but could likely be a direct competitor to the Lightning Strike. New York-based Tarform is also working on an electric motorcycle that could compete in a similar class to the Lightning Strike."   Follow Micah @MicahToll   https://electrek.co/2019/01/24/strike-electric-motorcycle-pre-order/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 27th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Follow Up 1: the Twitter account of John Totah who leaked the Gigafactory production numbers now seems to be completely deleted. Follow Up 2: Audi is scrapping its plans to launch its E-Tron Quattro crossover in Brussels on Aug. 30. The launch has been postponed to a future date.   $2B INVESTMENT BOOST FOR FARADAY FUTURE TechCrunch call them the "Beleaguered electric vehicle firm Faraday Future" and "a rare moment of cheer for floundering electric car maker" which is a little harsh. But some might say fair! We've been talking about Faraday since they were founded in 2014 but so far have only released beta prototypes, that being the FF91. The car which they said would be on the market this year. Even when we first saw it at CES at the start of 2017 that date seemed a flight of fancy. And although they're based in California it's definitely Chinese money propping them up. Perhaps the 13 models they once promised are a little bit optimistic at this stage. TechCrunch do say: "Evergrande Health, a division of Hong Kong-listed Evergrande, has taken a 45 percent stake in Faraday Future in a deal worth a total of $2 billion. Evergrande Health has taken over an investment commitment agreed to last November by Season Smart Limited [which] invested an initial tranche of $800 million, according to filings, but now Evergrande Health has taken that over for around $860 million" FF said in a statement: "“FF will continue to use the committed funds to accomplish our top priority — finalizing the development and delivering the first production vehicle, FF 91 to both US and China markets. The investment will also support Faraday Future to expand its product pipeline, develop cutting-edge technologies and grow the business rapidly in the global marketplace, including our manufacturing facilities in Hanford, California and in Guangzhou Nansha, Guangdong Province, China." Electrek reminds us of the specs: "With a 130kWh battery pack configuration, FF claims that the FF91 will have 1050 horsepower. Faraday Future says this is the most of any electric car (but actually falls short of some hypercars like the current Rimac Concept_One and now some other upcoming electric cars) and has 378 miles of EPA range." According to GearBrain: "It is unknown how far the FF91 is from mass production, as Faraday Future scrapped plans for a $1 billion Las Vegas factory last August, instead opting to take over a 55-year-old former Pirelli tire factory in Los Angeles. FF said on June 7 this year that it had only just received a permit to begin construction of its new production facility. Despite the significant setbacks, lawsuits over missed payments to contractors, and an employee exodus, $2 billion is a huge chunk of cash and should see the FF91 make it to the end of a production line. "   TESLA ROADSTER DRIVER SAYS IT’S FAST, REAL FAST Emile Bouret is the test driver you go to for performance testing. He's raced professionally, has worked for Audi in the past, and now is a test driver for Tesla thanks to the chief designer Franz von Holzhausen bringing him in. Now we're still in the same week as a Tesla employee leaking positive news from Gigafactory, so he's not going to say much about the new Roadster. But he did say on the Youtube channel of VINWiki: "I know there is some scepticism about the figures that were quoted that day, 0 to 60 mph, quarter-mile, etc., and I think I can say without getting in trouble that those are actual figures. Those are not theoretical. Those are not calculations. We have done those numbers. I probably shouldn’t say but those numbers are actually conservative. It’s going to be a proper weapon." StatCheck on the Roadster - 200kWh battery pack, 600+ miles on one charge, three motors and 0-62 less than 2 seconds, these days everyone wants the 0-100mph time too, and that's 4.2 seconds. And that's without rocket boosters!   HYUNDAI WILL USE 'SECOND-LIFE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES FOR ENERGY STORAGE Hyundai is the latest automaker to explore uses for so-called "second-life" electric-car batteries for storage. Stephen Edelstein for The Drive makes a good point about renewables needing storage to really be the answer to current fossil fuels, which can be 'always on': "Hyundai has already constructed a one-megawatt-hour test array using Ioniq Electric and Kia Soul EV batteries. Going forward, it plans to provide batteries to Wärtsilä, which will then market them to electric utilities and other companies as part of complete energy-storage systems" he says: "Hyundai expects 29 gigawatt-hours of used electric-car batteries to be available by 2025, compared to the 10 GWh of batteries currently available for the energy-storage market. The prediction is based on an assumption of vastly expanded electric-car sales. Tesla has already pioneered the model of selling both electric cars and batteries for energy storage. BMW, Daimler, and Nissan have also discussed selling energy-storage battery packs, but not on the same scale as Tesla."   http://www.thedrive.com/tech/21774/hyundai-will-use-second-life-electric-car-batteries-for-energy-storage   DAIMLER TRUCKS ANTICIPATES BATTERY BREAKTHROUGH "Freightliner sells more heavy-duty diesel trucks in North America than any other brand. The division of Daimler AG, the German company that also owns the Mercedes-Benz car brand, controls about 40 percent of the heavy-duty truck market on this side of the Atlantic." reports Jerry Hirsch for trucks.com: "Earlier this month Roger Nielsen, chief executive of Daimler Trucks North America, unveiled the electric version of its flagship Freightliner semi-tractor. Prototypes of the truck will go into testing in the Portland, Ore., area later this year." Roger Niesel told Trucks.com: "When we make announcements, we’re always targeting what the customer could use, what the customer could need. Others in the startup industry [are] trying to attract investors or money, which is a different message if you’re trying to attract investment versus you’re trying to attract customers. We’re in the business of attracting customers, so our message is a little bit different. But for sure all the startups are interesting to watch. Of course, we’ve talked to them. Customers will get operating cost parity before purchase price parity. A lot of things go in that equation. The customer is expecting a truck to last a million miles with the last half million being driven by his used truck customer. There’s still a lot to be done there." On short hauls he says: "Bakery deliveries start at 4 in the morning, and they can go all the way through the evening. Maybe that truck also has to come back midday for a charge, or there’s charging somewhere along the way. The [Freightliner] eM2 [an electric medium-duty truck] would be a perfect application for a bakery with a 60-minute rest stop and charge. Say the driver wants lunch. He can get another 200 miles of range."   COMMUNITY Phil Roberts 40kWh LEAF New followers Comments from yesterday   You can listen to all previous 162 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. It’s Thursday 31st May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   TESLA MODEL 3 WINS CONSUMER REPORTS BLESSING AFTER BRAKE FIX Getting a B+ in a school test is not the end of the world, but what if your teacher allowed you to come back a week later and fix up that one question you got wrong, and give you an A+ with flying colours? That's pretty much the last week in the world of Consumer Reports and Tesla. They say: "Consumer Reports now recommends the Tesla Model 3, after our testers found a recent over-the-air update improved the car's braking distance by nearly 20 feet. In an email to CR, a Tesla spokeswoman said that the company improved the software for the Model 3's antilock braking system to adapt to variations in how the brakes might be used and to respond to different environmental conditions. The improved braking distances raised the Model 3’s Overall Score enough for the car to be recommended by CR, but our testers had other areas of concern as well. They found issues with the Model 3’s wind noise, stiff ride, and uncomfortable rear seat. Last week, Musk told CR in a conversation that the automaker has already made changes to its production line to address those three issues. One of the most experienced of Tesla writers, Dana Hull, for Bloomberg: "Tesla's Model 3 sedan won a coveted recommendation from Consumer Reports after an over-the-air software update improved braking by almost 20 feet. The new software addressed variations in braking styles and environmental conditions, a company spokeswoman told Consumer Reports. Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, described the improvement as unprecedented. “I’ve been at CR for 19 years and tested more than 1,000 cars, and I’ve never seen a car that could improve its track performance with an over-the-air update,” he said in a statement. The updates are being rolled out now. Elon Musk tweeted: "“Improved windshield for aero noise & suspension for ride comfort are major ops. Unless you’re really bothered by them, don’t replace. Best way to improve ride is drop tire pressure to ~39 psi. 45 psi is best range, but lower comfort.” Electrek say: "The hardware update to the suspension has reportedly started rolling out in December and owners can have it retrofitted at a Tesla’s service center."   https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/tesla-model-3-gets-cr-recommendation-after-braking-update/   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-30/tesla-model-3-gets-consumer-reports-endorsement-after-brake-fix   https://electrek.co/2018/05/30/tesla-model-3-stopping-distance-improvements-new-test-ui-ride-comfort-road-noise     AUDI E-TRON EV GETS SIDE CAMERAS INSTEAD OF MIRRORS FOR AERODYNAMICS Wing mirrors are something I would put into the category of solved problems. A bit like sinks - they were a solved problem. Sinks works. Then fancypants hotels started installing sinks like flat slates with funky taps, and the next thing you know, it splashes everywhere and you've wet your crotch. Just me? OK. Now Autoblog says Audi is ditching mirrors for cameras on the forthcoming Audi e-tron Quattro. I presumed it would be one of those concept car things which never made it's way onto the car. "The optional cameras are mounted to little winglets where the standard side mirrors would have been. As for where you see the cameras' views, there will be an additional screen in the area to the left of the instrument cluster for at least the left camera. Audi wasn't totally clear about the screen for the right-hand camera." Back in 2016 Autonews were talking about this issue "cameras capture a wider angle of view and can see blind spots usually invisible with mirrors. They can also improve visibility by digitally compensating for glare, darkness or even rainy weather. The pathway to mirrorless cars was cleared late last year when the United Nations' World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations approved the use of cameras that meet certain specifications in place of mirrors." North America is expected to follow suit later in 2018 in allowing them.   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/30/audi-e-tron-ev-side-cameras-replace-mirrors/   HYUNDAI SET TO ENTER BATTERY BUILDING BUSINESS According to Korean Media, Hyundai could be about to make their own EV batteries in an attempt to ease the bottlenecks which have slowed up sales, and they aim to reduce the dependency on LGChem and SK Innovation. Electrive say: "a Hyundai spokesperson confirmed they were working on battery production lines but denied any plans they would use them for their own electric vehicles."   https://www.electrive.com/2018/05/30/hyundai-to-produce-its-own-electric-car-batteries/   2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ADDS MORE ACTIVE-SAFETY EQUIPMENT Staying with Hyundai and "The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq range will receive a handful of technology updates for the new model year, with improvements in safety and infotainment. This is the third model year for the Ioniq Electric and Hybrid, though only the second year for the Plug-In Hybrid version." reports CNET. New for 2019: Driver Attention Alert and High Beam Assist safety features now available Enhanced, natural-language, server-based voice-recognition and POI-search database provided by HERE™ Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Smart Cruise Control added to SEL Standard remote charge management for Plug-in and Electric models via Blue Link® "The Ioniq Electric and Plug-In Hybrid will include remote monitoring of battery charging as standard from within the cars' associated Blue Link telematics smartphone apps. The 2019 versions of all three Ioniqs will be in dealerships this summer." But what about the battery range? I can't find anywhere online which says they will upgrade the current 28 kWh battery pack with 124 mile driving range. The move comes despite long-standing speculation in media reports that the Ioniq EV could receive a battery upgrade to boost its range to 200 miles or beyond. I'll post a link to the Hyundai Media Center on the show notes but key paragraphs are: " The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid provides an estimated all-electric range of 29 miles, 119 MPGe in EV mode and 52 MPG in hybrid mode, powered by a potent 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery." and… "The Ioniq Electric has an estimated 136 MPGe rating, the highest efficiency rating of any electric vehicle sold in the U.S. market. The Ioniq Electric offers pure electric mobility with a 28.0 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery for an estimated driving range of 124 miles."   https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2542   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2019-hyundai-ioniq-adds-equipment/   SIGHTINGS OF FUTURE EVS "Ford's new Kuga SUV, set to arrive in showrooms in 2020, will be available as a plug-in hybrid for the first time." according to AutoExpress who have spy spots of the Plug In Hybrid version testing, in heavy camo, in North America. Although if you're listening to this in North America, this is the Ford Escape. Since the 2013 model year, the European designed Kuga has been rebadged as the Escape, and it's a popular car selling over 300,000 last year. "This new Kuga is still a few years away, however, as evidenced by the substantial camouflage hiding the new car's refreshed design. It’s likely that the next Kuga will share its platform with the new Focus, which has been designed with electrification in mind. As well as allowing Ford to develop petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric cars on the same platform it also means a slight increase in size is on the cards, as hinted at by the longer rear overhang and extended wheel arches of the prototypes." LeftLaneNews say: "Overall this prototype looks nearly identical to the one that was spotted back in April, but there is one major difference — look closely at the front fender and you'll see what looks like a fuel door. But Ford hasn't moved the Escape's gas tank to the front end, what you're looking at is actually a door to conceal a charge port."   http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/kuga/102952/ford-kuga-plug-in-hybrid-caught-on-camera   https://www.leftlanenews.com/spied-2020-ford-escape-plug-in-hybrid-100611.html   NISSAN HOME ENERGY SYSTEM LAUNCHES IN UK Dominik Wilde at Motor 1 has some great news for those in the UK wanting to add solar and storage, for a great price, from Nissan. "The new setup involves solar panels and reused batteries from the company's EVs, allowing homeowners to generate electricity even while they're not in the house and either sell it back to the grid at peak times or use it themselves. The whole thing is managed by a sophisticated computer system to best meet each household's requirements. "Starting from £3,881 – which includes the supply and installation of a six-panel solar system, home energy management system, and VAT at 5 percent – the package also uses battery storage (xStorage Home) as well as the solar panels and energy management to reduce energy bills by up to 66 percent. It also has the ability to charge Nissan EVs." There's a link to the article in the show notes if you want to read more.   https://uk.motor1.com/news/243422/nissan-home-energy-uk/   FOR HIS LAST ACT, MARCHIONNE WILL OUTLINE AN EV/HYBRID ROADMAP THIS WEEK "Fiat Chrysler (FCA) boss Sergio Marchionne is expected to outline new plans for electric and hybrid cars in a strategy presentation on Friday, aiming to ensure the world's seventh-largest carmaker remains in the race in the absence of a merger." is the news from Reuters: "Marchionne had long refused to jump on the electrification bandwagon, saying he would only do so if selling battery-powered cars could be done at a profit. He even urged customers not to buy FCA's Fiat 500e, its only battery-powered model, because he was losing money on each sold."   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/30/fiat-chrysler-sergio-marchionne-ev-electric-hybrid/       I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 8th May 2018. TESLA REQUIRES ALL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE AN EMPLOYEE VOUCH FOR THEM Elon Musks recent email to staff said "“I have been disappointed to discover how many contractor companies are interwoven throughout Tesla,” Musk’s email read. “Often, it is like a Russian nesting doll of contractor, subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc. before you finally find someone doing actual work” Now according to Digital Trends: "Musk’s original email gave contractors a week in order to prove their worth to the company, but he has since extended that deadline. However, he is also requiring that contractors have an employee willing to vouch for them or else they will be denied access. Musk’s requirement that Tesla employees put their reputation on the line will likely make it very difficult for the majority of contractors to obtain recommendations. After all, his email seems to imply that if a contractor’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory then it could impact the job of the employee who vouched for it." The full email from Elon over the weekend and obtained by Electrek, reads: "Please send a note to HR before Monday justifying the excellence, necessity and trustworthiness by individual (not just the contractor company as a whole) of every non-Tesla person who has badge access to our buildings or network access to our systems. By default, anyone who does not have a Tesla employee putting their reputation on the line for them will be denied access to our facilities and networks on Monday morning. This applies worldwide. The "barnacles" are a reference to Tesla contractors, an analogy Musk first used publicly in the May 2 earnings call. Now Tesla employees are being asked to put their own careers on the line to justify any contractors they need." TESLA SOLAR ROOF PATENT REVEALS THE SCIENCE BEHIND ITS STUNNING DESIGN We love a bit of Solar chat, and on Inverse.com they've been talking about the Tesla Solar roof. Why does the Tesla Solar Roof look just like a normal roof? How do they not look like traditional panels? Inverse report: "One of the most fascinating aspects of Tesla’s solar roof, which started reaching homes earlier this year, is that it looks like an ordinary roof. The design hides advanced energy-harvesting cells wired to a home battery, and a new patent application published last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sheds light on how the company pulled off the technical feat." Inverse continues: "Louvers inside the tiles act like blinds in a window. The light hitting the roof from the sky passes through, but from the street level the louvers block the sight of the cells and make the tile appear smooth. TESLA REGISTERS 5,009 NEW MODEL 3 VINS AS TSLA RETAKES $50B MARKET CAP On Twitter, Matthew Koloski (@mattk926) said: "#Tesla registered 5009 new #Model3 VINs. Highest VIN is 39263.". Simon at Teslarati point out: “Interacting with members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Koloski noted that none of the new VINs represented dual-motor AWD variants of the Model 3. Over the course of the past few months, Tesla’s VIN registrations have been increasing in number. Exactly two weeks ago, Tesla registered 5,170 new Model 3 VINs — one of the largest batches yet. With this in mind, a production rate of 3,000-4,000 Model 3 per week is starting to seem feasible." MUSK BUYS $9.85 MILLION IN TESLA SHARES AFTER TAUNTING SHORTS Bloomberg have picked up: Elon Musk "bought about $9.85 million worth of Tesla shares on Monday, his biggest purchase since March 2017, according to a regulatory filing. Musk, 46, already was Tesla’s largest shareholder, with his stake now approaching 20 percent" He's also been taunting those betting against Tesla on Twitter saying: "“The sheer magnitude of short carnage will be unreal. If you’re short, I suggest tiptoeing quietly to the exit." FUTURE PROOFING THE OPEL BRAND IN AN ELECTRIC FUTURE Sarah Timmermans, the CEO of Opel Belgium, has been talking about the future of Opel now it's owned by PSA Groupe. In a conversation with Fleet Europe she outlined the challenges electric cars will bring: "We have announced to all our dealers across Europe that we need to change our way to market, that both we and our dealers need to adapt to the changing customer behaviour, and to the changing landscape – disruptions such as electric vehicles. We have clearly indicated that we are entirely technology-neutral. Everybody knows that we need to come down to 95 grams of CO2 emitted per km by 2020, and this is going to require a mix of powertrains. So we are working on electric vehicles, hybrids, hydrogen, along with petrol and diesel in their most ecological versions. Opel/Vauxhall will have 4 electrified car lines on the market by 2020, including the Grandland X PHEV and the next generation Corsa that will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. On top of this, every new passenger car line in Europe will get an electrified option – offering a BEV or a hybrid version alongside efficient internal combustion engine." BATTERY SHORTAGE INTERRUPTS HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC SALES Orders for the Ioniq Electric in Canada are currently on hold due to a global shortage of battery supply. A leaked memo to Hyundai dealers titled "18My Ioniq EV Short-Term Production Shortage" said: ""Due to a temporary global battery supply shortage, the sold order entry system for 18MY Ioniq EV will be closed effective immediately. The 19MY Ioniq EV will be opened at the same time to allow for pre-sale of 19My Ioniq EV, with deliveries beginning in July." According to Green Car Reports; "All this comes just before Hyundai is scheduled to release a long-range version of the Ioniq Electric with a bigger battery, slated to go 200 miles or more on a charge. The current Ioniq Electric comes with a single battery size with a rated range of 124 miles. Further, the Hyundai Motor America spokesman allowed that the battery shortage may affect production of Hyundai's upcoming Kona Electric, which is expected to go on sale toward the end of this year with a 64-kwh battery pack rated at 238 miles of range." WHOLE FOODS BEGINS INSTALLING EV CHARGERS AT STORES "Whole Foods has announced a partnership with electric vehicle charging company Blink to begin installing the EV charge points at its US stores" starting with three stores in Pennsylvania say Autoguide: "Blink charging stations can be located using the company’s smartphone app. The app can also relay information on the charge point’s status thanks to Blink’s cloud-based network. The charging stations are now open at Whole Foods’ locations in Lancaster, Spring House and Exton, Pennsylvania." NEW BATTERY LAYOUT AND MOTOR COMPONENTS IN HYUNDAI / KIA ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Something I found on the Hyundai IONIQ forum, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro are similar but different. "These two cars have the same battery capacity, the same battery pack case, the same motor and electronics. But it seems the two cars have very different battery cells. The Kona EV has NCM622 cells from LG Chem that are optimized more for power density. The Niro EV has NCM811 cells from SK Innovation that are optimized more for energy density. The Niro EV is more of a family car - bigger more comfortable - but the acceleration output through the battery management system (BMS) control is relatively low. The Kona EV cells however allow higher-powered driving. Its body is also smaller, and its agility excellent, which is an advantage for sports driving. In the end, it is analysed that Niro EV is beneficial to achieve stable driving performance and Kona EV has advantages in higher-powered driving."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
