In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, the podcast crew discusses their Marvel's Midnight Suns hands-on reactions, Far Cry 6 preview impressions, news surrounding the upcoming Dead Space remake, and returning to Destiny 2: Season of the Lost after last week's announcements about The Witch Queen expansion. Later in the show, we react to the community's hot takes about games like Metal Gear Solid 5 and Uncharted 4. This month's cover story revealed that Marvel's Midnight Suns is the upcoming card-based strategy RPG from Firaxis, the studio behind the beloved XCOM series. The game's necromantic themes and dark narrative separate it from Marvel Games' other offerings, and after playing it ourselves, the game feels very promising. In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we discuss a handful of games we've been digging recently, including Pokémon Unite, Wildermyth, Genshin Impact 2.0, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Neo: The World Ends with You, and Tribes of Midgard. We also talk about our newest Game Informer cover story: Tales of Arise. Then Dan describes his time talking to Red Hook Studios about Darkest Dungeon II. Pokémon Unite has been one of the bigger surprises and might be a good breakout MOBA for a lot of people. Alex says he "can't put this damn game down. It's a genuinely fun MOBA with a pocket monster twist, and it's probably better than you think." Wildermyth is an indie strategy game that shouldn't be overlooked. We were a little late to the review party, but in his review, Dan said, "If you've always wanted a fantasy Dungeons & Dragons stylized XCOM game, Wildermyth might be exactly what you're looking for." Meanwhile, Neo: The World Ends With You is the long-awaited sequel to the beloved JRPG The World End With You. Kim said, "It captures the magic of what made the first game so special, but it also retains some of its bigger issues and frustrations with difficulty balancing and the repetition of tedious tasks." It's a full show, but we make time for another fantastic round of community emails. So please join Dan Tack (@dantack), Jill Grodt (@Finruin), Alex Van Aken (@itsVanAken), Kimberley Wallace (@kstar1785), and Ben Reeves (@Benjaminreeves) for a new wild and ever-entertaining episode! In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we discuss a handful of games we've been digging recently, including New World, Psychonauts 2, Death's Door, Cris Tales, and Overboard! Death's Door is the big highlight. In his review, Marcus called it "an entertaining and engrossing action-adventure romp that you'd do well to enjoy before your time is up." Cris Tales is also a delightful little surprise. This inventive RPG lets you explore a world through multiple timelines. Brian is still working on a review, but in his early impressions he said, "the game is undeniably gorgeous, possessing one of the most consistently beautiful art styles I've seen in a long time." Sadly, New World isn't clicking with us as much. Amazon Games' MMORPG comes out August 31, but we're exploring the beta right now and should have more impressions soon. It's a full show, but we make time for another fantastic round of community emails. On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we dissect the entirety of EA Play and let you know what we think of Star Wars: Squadrons, Lost in Random, and whether or not the publishing giant nailed its digital event. Later, we briefly touch upon the Cyberpunk 2077 delay, predict what we think next week's Pokémon event will reveal, and wrap the show with the return of Community Emails. Observant fans will note that I am in fact not Andy McNamara. Due to the EA event being past his bedtime, Andy wasn't able to make this week's episode work. Instead, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting with the help of the amazing Andrew Reiner, Matthew Kato, Ben Reeves, Joe Juba, and Jeff Cork. We continue to do this show from our homes as we hunker down in quarantine, so please forgive us for any audio or video hiccups as we deliver content outside the studio. Hosting The GI Show was an amazing experience, but also my first time. Please send me any and all constructive feedback for the show on Twitter, and be sure to share the show if you enjoyed it! Emails bitte an podcast@bytesized.de
Welcome to the newest episode of The Game Informer Show aka the Leocast! This week, Leo Vader takes the reins and is joined by Jeff Cork, Joe Juba, and I to chat about why the new third-person shooter Outriders had them buzzing after visiting People Can Fly's studio in Poland. After dissecting Outrider's gaming goodness, we examine the latest Anthem news out of Bioware and discuss if it can become the game we were all hoping it would with the studio going dark to create a clearer vision of the sci-fi shooter. Wrapping up the show, we rope Dan Tack into the madness and tackle a huge community email section that had us in stitches and questioning our sanity all the way through. Thanks for listening! On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we go around the video game world and back again. The show starts with Matt Miller and Leo Vader as we discuss our time spent in Apple Arcade. From new gems to old favorites, we put perspective on the service now that we have been using it a few months. Alex Stadnik is this week's super producer. Next, Joe Juba, Brian Shea, Ben Reeves, and Alex Stadnik all join me to discuss the results of our competition to predict who will take home the win at The Game Awards that happened last week. Let's just say there is a lot to discuss. And victory here might make you the smartest person in the world. In the next segment, Ben Reeves, Joe Juba, and Dan Tack join me for community emails where we do the unthinkable: We rate the Mona Lisa. Then we have the sixth and final installment of our Game of the Year chats, where I ask guests what games are defining their year. I am joined by Ben Reeves, Matt Miller, and Dan Tack as we try to get in some last-minute discussions. Check the list below for all the games we covered over the last few weeks. Find those podcasts on your favorite service! And finally, Joe Juba interviews Michel Koch, Jean-Luc Cano, and Raoul Barbet from Dontnod Entertainment. They are some of the minds behind Life is Strange 2, which recently saw its successful conclusion. Joe has a spoiler-filled chat with the team about the process of making the game, so fans who have already finished Life is Strange 2 should definitely tune in. Thanks for listening! On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we do a lot of discussing. In fact, we should discuss this. The show starts with Joe Juba and Andy Reiner as we discuss the recent release of the final episode of Life is Strange 2. Bonus discussion about what we think about episodic gaming. Next, we do something stupid. Joe Juba, Brian Shea, Ben Reeves, and Alex Stadnik all throw in a dollar to take part in a competition to predict who will take home the win at The Game Awards that happens tonight (meaning, most of you will listen to this segment already knowing what wins what, which means you can mock our absurd reasoning – and what could be more fun than that?) I'll do the math for you and tell you who won on next week's show (though I'm guessing some intrepid listener will be eager to let us know who was victorious). For part five of our Game of the Year chats, where I ask guests what games are defining their year, I am joined by Joe Juba and the fall intern class members, Alex Stadnik (@Studnik76) and Nick Straub (@Ncstraub). Also this is the moment I get a busy Leo Vader to join the show. This segment will run the rest of this year, as we bring in editors (and guests) every week to talk about games that have impacted their year in the lead-up to Game Informer's Top 50 of 2019. Next week, will be the final installment, so make sure you come back for the finale! Thanks for listening! And all of the sudden it is December. You should give the gift of telling all your friends how much you love The Game Informer Show and sharing it with high praise on all your social media networks ... or at least that is what I think. On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we explore a wide variety of subjects, so every segment has a surprise. The show starts with Ben Reeves, Jeff Cork, and Matt Miller as we discuss our PlayStation 25th Anniversary cover story, Darksiders Genesis, and Arise: A Simple Story. The entire show is produced by the man in the box, Alex Stadnik (someone asked for his Twitter handle too so you can find it here). Next, we dive head first into community emails. Joined by Matt Miller, Joe Juba, and Andy Reiner for this week's discussion, which is highlighted by the theme of us becoming the "Lords of Gaming" and making proclamations as to how we would rule. Good times. For part four of our Game of the Year chats, where I ask guests what games are defining their year, I am joined by Andy Reiner and special guests from The Video Game History Foundation, Frank Cifaldi, and Kelsey Lewin. This segment will run the rest of this year, as we bring in editors (and guests) every week to talk about games that have impacted their year in the lead-up to Game Informer's Top 50 of 2019. And finally, we chat with Alex Hutchinson, co-founder and creative director at Typhoon Studios. We talk about his history (spoiler alert: he was creative director for Assassin's Creed III and Far Cry 4 among many others) and their upcoming release Journey to the Savage Planet. Always entertaining to chat with Alex. Thanks for listening! Please make sure to leave feedback below, share the episode if you enjoyed it, and follow me @therealandymc to let me know what you think. If you are in the U.S., Happy Thanksgiving! If not...well, Happy Day. On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we keep things simple...almost. The show starts with Leo Vader and Ben Reeves as we discuss Half-Life: Alyx and what it means for fans of Half-Life and VR. And that discussion is just the beginning. In this week's community email segment, I'm joined by Matt Miller, Ben Reeves, and Leo Vader as we answer your questions and generally wander off topic. Then, Andrew Reiner, Brian Shea, and Matt Miller join me for part three of our Game of the Year chats, where I ask them what games are defining their year. This segment will run the rest of this year, as we bring in editors every week to talk about games that have impacted their year in the lead-up to Game Informer's Top 50 of 2019. And finally, we chat with an old Game Informer team member, Justin Leeper. He had the opportunity to work with the legendary Hideo Kojima and did performance capture for Death Stranding. We interview him to learn about the process and what the experience was like. Thanks for listening! On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we do our best not to overthink things and stick to the topic. In all likelihood, we fail at these tasks. The show starts with Brian Shea and Ben Reeves as we discuss Stadia and Microsoft's recent X019 event. Leo Vader joins us throughout the entire episode as he tries his best to outdo us from his command station in the box. Andy Reiner and Ben Reeves join me to give their impressions on Shenmue III, before we start the endless chats. Speaking of... In this week's community email segment Joe Juba, Alex Stadnik, and Dan "The Jacket" Tack answer questions about what defines an independent game, talk Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order technical issues and how those will affect its chance as a Game of the Year, and finally we talk too long about a top 5 list, which you won't want to miss. (There is also some exciting news that you can spoil here.) And finally, I sit down with Kim Wallace, Brian Shea, Joe Juba, and Leo Vader to hear their thoughts on what games they think are in the running for game of the year. On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we shuffle the deck - literally - as we record the episode out of order and confuse the host (cause that's the level of production we aim for here at GI). But one thing is certain, the show starts with Andy Reiner and Matt Miller talking Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Next up, Jeff Cork and I sit down to hear stories from Leo Vader and Ben Reeves about some recent travels to see Rainbow Six Siege and a new game Obsidian Entertainment called Grounded. While we have Leo on the show, we also talk a little about the recent release of Red Dead Redemption II to PC. You have heard of Pokémon right? A wild Ben Reeves, Alex Stadnik, and Brian Shea appear to talk about the upcoming Switch releases, Sword and Shield. In this week's community email segment Kim Wallace, Jeff Cork, and Ben Reeves answer questions about co-op, help build a video game Mount Rushmore, and we help a reader through a tough time. And finally, I sit down with Jeff Cork, Dan "The Jacket" Tack, and Ben Reeves to hear their thoughts on what games they think are in the running for their games of the year. Welcome back to The Game Informer Show! On this week's episode, we unleash all of our thoughts on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 on the Nintendo Switch. Then Kimberley Wallace swings by to share her impressions so far after playing a lot of Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Brian Shea talks about playing Gears 5's multiplayer modes. Become a Patron! Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 6th August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, there’s an interview from two days ago on Saturday from CleanCar who log your journeys and then using fancy pants data, tell you which is the optimal EV for you. Please go back and download it if that would be of interest. Thank you SO MUCH to the first 11 Patreon Producers of this show. I really had no idea if anyone help be a part of the show. I’ll tell you more and thank them at the end. If you get any value at all out of this show, whether you learn something or it entertains you, I’ll give you those details at the end. I love free stuff, you love free stuff, this show will always be free, it’s totally optional and not something I want you to think about. But let’s start with the news… EV CHARGERS FOR BIRMIGNHAM Alabama’s busiest airport is adding a new convenience for travellers with electric cars: free vehicle chargers. Officials say nine new chargers are being added in the parking deck at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Three of the chargers are in the hourly section, and six are in an area used for long-term parking" according to YellowHammerNews: "The new units resulted from a partnership between the Birmingham Airport Authority and Alabama Power Co. A statement says Birmingham becomes the first passenger airport in the state with chargers for electric vehicles. The airport has more than 120 daily departures on five airlines." EV FAST CHARGER RIBBON CUTTING August 7 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. "America’s Car Museum are proud to kick-off this first new electric vehicle fast charger at a car museum along the I-5 corridor as part of the West Coast Electric Highway. With historic vehicles dating back to early electric powered cars, today America’s Car Museum is bringing in a new generation of electric vehicles as it unveils the newest fast-charging station at the city’s entrance." https://pluginamerica.org/event/ev-fast-charger-ribbon-cutting/ TOP 5 EV'S COMING BY 2020 Fred at Electrek has been making a list, and we all love a good Top 5. This time it's the Top 5 cars coming by 2020: "Electric cars that will either be affordable and/or that will disrupt entire segments or even the industry as a whole." "5: VW I.D. Concept - For now, the vehicle is only known as the VW I.D. Concept, but it might end up being called ‘Neo’. VW is planning to release a production version in 2020 based on the concept that they revealed in 2016." "4: Mercedes-Benz EQC - By the time the EQC comes out next year, there will be 3 or 4 all-electric options in its segment, which doesn’t make it very unique, but I think it will result in electric vehicles taking over a lot (maybe even most) market shares of premium SUVs." "3: Volvo all-electric XC40 - Not much is known about the vehicle just yet, but Volvo’s latest CUV platform was built from the ground up to support several types of powertrains – including an all-electric on." "2: Porsche Taycan - I especially like the Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E, for its potential to convince hardcore petrolheads, like many Porsche fanatics, of the advantages of going electric." "1: Tesla Roadster - Tesla is bringing back the Roadster with a new generation of the vehicle that launched the company over 10 years ago. The first production car to get a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds, quarter-mile under9 seconds, and a top speed of over 250 mph." https://electrek.co/2018/08/04/5-most-exciting-electric-cars-2-years/ NISSAN THINKS MILD HYBRIDS WILL SOON BE OBSOLETE "Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi all have experience building hybrids and electric vehicles, so the alliance is well-positioned to introduce new models. Renault-Nissan advanced product planning manager Warwick Daly expects 35% of Nissan’s European sales to be electrified by 2025 with the goal for 20% of sales coming from plug-in hybrids by 2020." according to CarBuzz.com: "We want to stay ahead of the curve,” said Daly, adding his opinion that “the mild hybrid will start to become obsolete. Our electrification offer will change over time." Clearly, plug-ins and EVs will play a more significant role moving forward for Nissan. “The Leaf will play a bigger role,” Daly said, pointing out that the new car is selling at a 40% higher volume than the previous model. As SUVs grow in popularity, it only makes sense to give the Leaf an SUV sibling. https://carbuzz.com/news/nissan-thinks-mild-hybrids-will-soon-be-obsolete CENTRICA PLUGS INTO ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING SECTOR TO FUEL RECOVERY "Britain's biggest energy provider is taking its smart electricity drive on the road with the company’s first major investment in electric vehicle charging." says Jillian Ambrose, www.telegraph.co.uk: "In the coming days, the FTSE 100 owner of British Gas, is expected to unveil a multimillion-pound investment in a software company that already helps to power more than 200,000 drivers in the US and Europe. Sources close to Centrica said the investment in Israeli start-up Driivz will accelerate its “smart” energy system ambitions, from the home into the burgeoning market for electric vehicles." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/08/04/centrica-plugs-electric-car-charging-sector-fuel-recovery/ TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSOLD ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CARS COMBINED "Model 3 not only outsold particular models (all passenger cars except for maybe seven), but for example, it outsold all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars – ≈8,500 (SUVs excluded). Mercedes-Benz sold in total just 20,034 vehicles in July (down 22.7%)." https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-outsold-all-mercedes-benz-cars-combined/ TESLA, THE MODEL 3... AND THE MARKET Enrique Dans from Forbes.com says: "The Tesla 3 may not be a car for the masses, but there are major savings to be made: tax breaks, fuel, maintenance and resale, along with advantages such as free parking and access to lanes for high occupancy vehicles. In short, households that cover more than 20,000 kilometers per year should think seriously about buying a Tesla Model 3. But if you’re considering buying an electric vehicle, any electric vehicle, and you find that the sales person is trying to put you off doing so and convincing you to buy a petrol car instead, ask yourself: why might that be? If Tesla succeeds in holding onto the top spot this month in the hypercompetitive luxury car middle segment then we could be witnessing a tipping point: an extremely traditional market deeply attached to fossil fuel vehicles that’s beginning to realize that electric is not only cool but also makes a lot of sense. " https://www.forbes.com/sites/enriquedans/2018/08/04/tesla-the-model-3-and-the-market/#6f0cb4e77edf MORE MODEL 3 VINS "Correction: This batch (78580-81204) is ~100% dual motor, not ~88% as previously estimated. It appears that 12% of the VINs were skipped (invalid response for dual motor AND single motor), however, they have since been updated by Tesla." "#Tesla registered 7,903 new #Model3 VINs. ~100% estimated to be dual motor. Highest VIN is 89107. https://t.co/OZqpp8nPjs — Model 3 VINs (@Model3VINs) August 5, 2018 JAGUAR I-PACE TARGETING MERCEDES TAXIS IN GERMANY "Jaguar's I-Pace electric car has Germany's famous Mercedes-Benz taxis in its sights" writes Dominik Wilde for Motor1.com: "The British firm's debut battery-powered effort has delivered 10 of the crossovers to Munich's biggest taxi operator recently. Mercedes-Benz has much of the German Taxi market covered, with around 60 percent of the country's taxis being Mercedes, many of which are E-Classes that are roughly half the price of the Jaguar. A comparable Mercedes, the EQ C crossover, won't be launched until next year." "Jaguar's taxis are part of a plan by the city of Munich – which is the hometown of rival brand BMW –to reduce area pollution. Rides in the new cars will be subsidized by the city council too, with it paying 20 cents per kilometre travelled. Munich has one of the highest levels of pollution from diesel vehicles among German cities and could introduce bans on older cars." https://www.motor1.com/news/261217/jaguar-i-pace-targeting-mercedes-taxis/ HYUNDAI REALISING AN ELECTRIC DREAM "Early demand for this Kona Electric is the highest of any new Hyundai ever introduced. Already the Korean firm is worried it might not even be able to keep up with that demand." an article by Nat Barnes in the Express Newspaper said today: "Very few Kona sales are expected to be the lesser 39kWh model though, and the monthly price difference of the 64kWh model will be minimal on a finance plan. "There is a smart regeneration mode, strangely found deep within the trip computer settings which uses the road gradient and traffic levels to automatically choose and adapt a setting for you. This latter mode sounds ideal but the reality is that on the road its constant second-guessing quickly becomes frustrating. The manual settings are a far more preferable option." It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. 'SAFE' LEVELS OF AIR POLLUTION MAY CAUSE SERIOUS CHANGES LINKED TO HEART FAILURE "Even low levels of air pollution may cause heart abnormalities similar to those seen during the early stages of heart failure, a study has warned." writes Alex Matthews-king in the Independent newspaper: "UK research, published as the government consults on proposals for its Clean Air Strategy, tested 4,000 people and found those who lived near busy roads had larger hearts on average than those living in less polluted areas. This comes despite the fact that the participants came from areas where pollution levels were below the UK guidelines. Blood tests showed a clear association between people living on busier roads and increased levels or harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and small air particle pollution (PM2.5) in their bodies." https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/air-pollution-heart-failure-attack-stroke-environment-government-nitrogen-dioxide-a8474231.html TESLA SAYS ITS NEW SELF-DRIVING CHIP IS FINALLY BAKED "Tesla’s biggest claim is that one day, all the cars it’s currently building will be capable of full-self driving. So when Elon Musk announced after the company's second-quarter earnings report that Tesla is developing its own computer chips, it was a momentous claim by the car company. “According to a story on Wired.co.uk: "Musk's grand reveal led him to boast the company has “the world's most advanced computer designed specifically for autonomous operation. Musk says the new silicon is an order of magnitude faster than the chips in their cars now, a product developed by NVIDIA, an industry leader and supplier to at least 20 other robo-car developers. The NVIDIA chips, Musk says, can deal with 200 frames of video per second, from the cameras around the car. Tesla’s chip can handle 2,000 frames per second, with some spare capacity left for redundancy and safety. https://www.wired.com/story/tesla-self-driving-car-computer-chip-nvidia/ FIRST TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE VBOX TEST YIELDS 0-60 MPH IN 3.32 SECONDS Simon Alvarez at Teslarati.com has been keeping an eye on those YouTube videos of Tesla Model 3 Performance runs and this is a good one. "Tesla enthusiast Eli of My Tesla Adventure was able to get behind the wheel of a fully stock Model 3 Performance earlier this week. Eli noted that he was able to use his VBOX, a device that measures a vehicle’s acceleration, speed, and overall stats during a specific run, when he took the Model 3 Performance for a spin. While a video is unavailable as per the electric car owner’s request, the YouTube host was able to share the data gathered by his VBOX in social media. Following are screenshots from the My Tesla Adventure host’s VBOX app on his smartphone. As could be seen in the Model 3 Performance’s VBOX data, the electric car was able to hit the 60 mph mark in 3.32 seconds." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-performance-vbox-data-0-60-mph-stats/ TESLA HITS THE STREETS WITH NEW POP-UP EVENT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA "Tesla recently came out to The Collection in Oxnard, California, for a very quick and dirty pop-up. The event involved a handful of Tesla employees, the two larger Tesla vehicles, and some very basic flags rolling into town." reports Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "Tesla chose not to bring its Model 3 to the two-day event, even though the company had blocked out plenty of room to host one. The representatives at the event shared that they had enough orders for Model 3 and were simply exploring the concept of a pop-up event in Oxnard to gauge interest." https://cleantechnica.com/2018/08/03/tesla-hits-the-streets-with-new-pop-up-event-in-southern-california/ SECOND-LIFE EV BATTERY MARKET TO GROW TO $4.2 BILLION BY 2025 "According to a recent report by research group Circular Energy Storage, the global market for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries is expected to be worth $1.3 billion this year." according to Marian Willuhn, www.pv-magazine.com: " While recycling batteries is common for portable devices, it can be postponed through ‘second-life’ applications in the case of EV batteries, with applications such as the use in energy storage systems. The report states EV batteries have optimal properties to be reused for energy storage, with regards to their capacity and remaining life-cycles. For this type of end-of-life use, EV batteries are placed in static energy storage systems on a residential and utility scale." https://www.pv-magazine.com/2018/08/03/second-life-ev-battery-market-to-grow-to-4-2-billion-by-2025/ VOLKSWAGEN R DIVISION WILL LIVE ON ONCE EVS TAKE OVER "Way back in the day, many people thought that electrification would be a death knell for performance cars, but oh, how our tunes have changed since then." says Andrew Krok for CNET.com: "Volkswagen's first foray into performance electric vehicles came by way of the I.D. R Pikes Peak, an all-electric racecar built solely for the purpose of smashing the Pikes Peak hill climb record, a feat it accomplished in late June. With 671 horsepower coming from its electric motors, the I.D. R didn't just capture the hill climb record for electric vehicles -- it broke the overall record. Volkswagen's R performance division is currently investigating the idea of performance-oriented electric vehicles, Autocar reports, citing a conversation with Jost Capito, the head of Volkswagen R. "If we do an R electric car, then it will be a proper R, or else it wouldn't make sense," Capito told Autocar." "The division head claims it has an idea of when such a car would arrive, but with the rapid pace of development, that figure could change, so there won't be any official announcements just yet. The first two EV Volkswagens on its new MEB electric platform will be the I.D. hatchback and the I.D. Crozz crossover, the latter of which should be the first to arrive in the US." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volkswagen-r-division-electric-cars/ BRITISH TOURING CARS TO GO HYBRID IN 2022 "British Touring Car Championship organizer TOCA has announced that the series will use hybrid engines from the 2022 season onward, confirming a move mooted by PMW in the March 2018 issue." says Andrew Charman, www.pmw-magazine.com: "It was confirmed at the TWG that for 2022 a specified hybrid unit would be fitted to all cars as an addition to their current drivetrain. This will allow each car to have a reserve of supplementary hybrid power available during each race, which can then be used by drivers as part of their overall race strategy. The TWG will now work with specialists to finalize the detailed engineering aspects of the hybrid system, technical decisions expected to be finalized over the coming 12 to 18 months." Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 3rd August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. First and foremost, I want to say thank you. I know you've tuned in for the news but bear with me. This is episode 200 and it has been a pleasure every day, without skipping a day to research and write this little show. As a few of you know, making radio shows is what i do for a living and I'm fortunate to work on two of the UK's most popular radio stations. So going from the safety of that during the day and coming home every night to make you a podcast was terrifying, because I had no idea if this would ever find an audience. Largely because in the first month literally nobody listened. But as the weeks went by it picked up, and I'm enormously grateful for that and your continued to support. But what do I mean by support? Well I shall spill the beans at the end of today's show. But I'll just say that thanks to you listening, it looks like I can connect with some folk in the EV community who want to help me out with the increasing podcast hosting costs. More at the end and if you're not bothered, you can always turn it off early! We'll get to all the reaction from the Tesla earning call just a tick. ORDER BOOKS OPEN FOR HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC "Hyundai’s Kona Electric is now available to order in the UK via the company’s Click to Buy platform, with the new EV offered in two battery configurations." according to charging website Zap Map: "initially rolled out on the online-only service, the Kona Electric will be available through dealerships from next year. Until then, buyers will have to order via the website, with first deliveries expected from September." At the time of recording all the shipping dates have slipped back to 24 weeks apart from one spec. So the 39kWh SE, 39kWh Premium with 2 Tone Roof, 64kWh Premium, 64kWh Premium with 2 Tone Roof, 64kWh Premium SE, and 64kWh Premium SE with 2 tone roof all 24 weeks. So that has definitely slipped back from when i looked in the morning. If you're in a hurry the only spec is Premium 39kWh and only if you get it in Solid Black or Metallic White, Blue or Red. https://www.zap-map.com/order-books-open-for-hyundais-kona-electric/ TRUMP ADMINISTRATION UNVEILS ITS PLAN TO RELAX CAR POLLUTION RULES "The Trump administration on Thursday put forth its long-awaited proposal to freeze antipollution and fuel-efficiency standards for cars, significantly weakening one of President Barack Obama’s signature policies to combat global warming." writes the New York Times: "The proposed new rules would also challenge the right of states like California to set their own, more stringent tailpipe pollution standards, setting the stage for a legal clash that could ultimately split the nation’s auto market in two. The move immediately faced opposition from an unusual mix of critics — including not only environmentalists and consumer groups but auto-industry representatives as well as individual states — who are now launching efforts to change the plan before it is finalized." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/02/climate/trump-auto-emissions-california.html ICELAND’S NEW HYDROGEN PLANT COULD SUPPLY CARS AND BUSES ACROSS THE NATION "An Icelandic power company says its new electrolyser will be able to supply every hydrogen car and bus currently operating across the country." says Jonny Bairstow for Energy live News: "ON Power says its facility, which is being installed at the Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant in the south-west of the country, will enter operation by the end of August. It believes the sale of hydrogen for use in vehicles could begin as early as October, meaning filling stations providing the gas would no longer have to wholly rely on imports. The firm plans to distribute the hydrogen in bottles to prevent losses in transport and admits it does not expect the operation to be immediately profitable but instead aims to catalyse the growth of a successful market for clean energy in the future. Bosses at the company say hydrogen cars do not need to compete with electric vehicles and imagine an ideal low carbon vehicle in the future could be powered primarily by electricity but be able to switch over to hydrogen during longer journeys." https://www.energylivenews.com/2018/08/02/icelands-new-hydrogen-plant-could-supply-cars-and-buses-across-the-nation/ VOLKSWAGEN MULLS OWN PRODUCTION OF BATTERY CELLS IN EUROPE "Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) is eyeing producing its own solid state battery cells, with possible serial production from 2024 or 2025, its chief executive said on Wednesday." according to a Reuters report: "A solid state battery factory would likely be in Europe, or even in Germany under the right conditions, Diess said. Battery cells are a key battleground in the automotive industry as it shifts to electric mobility." VW CEO Herbert Diess: "We must not make ourselves dependent on a few Asian manufacturers in the long term.” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-results-batteries/volkswagen-mulls-own-production-of-battery-cells-in-europe-idUSKBN1KM4FN VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS RECALL OF 124,000 ELECTRIC CARS "A charger containing traces of cadmium is causing headaches for Volkswagen, which says that because of the presence of the carcinogenic metal, the German automaker may be forced to recall 124,000 electric and hybrid vehicles." according to Bridie Schmidt, reneweconomy.com.au A spokesman for the group: "Clarification is under way for a recall order by Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority." "Usage of cadmium, a metal used in electric appliances like televisions, has been banned in most types of car parts. An unidentified supplier has however delivered a batch of battery chargers containing cadmium, which has been installed in some electric and hybrid cars of the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands between 2013 and June 2018." says Phys.org https://reneweconomy.com.au/volkswagen-threatens-recall-of-124000-electric-cars-86876/ ELON MUSK MAKES THE ‘MOST VALUABLE APOLOGY OF ALL TIME’ "Wall Street is happy over Tesla's quarterly results and guidance, but Elon Musk's apologies to multiple analysts may even be more important to the company's shares and investor sentiment." says Tae Kim for CNBC.com: "On Wednesday's post-earnings conference call, Tesla took its first questions from the two analysts Musk had dismissed three months earlier, when the company reported first-quarter results." That was the day of the now-famous "boring, bonehead questions" line. Analyst Alexander Potter said in a note to clients Wednesday. "This could be the start of something big. A few years from now, investors may conclude that 2Q18 was the quarter in which Tesla cemented its position as a truly formidable player in the global automotive market." HERE ARE THE TOP 5 TRADE-INS FOR TESLA MODEL 3S "The top five models traded in are the BMW 3 Series, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius. There's no specific breakdown in trim, but all five have base MSRPs lower than available Model 3s. The long-awaited $35,000 Tesla isn't available yet" reports Reese for Autoblog. ANOTHER TESLA SOFTWARE UPDATE COMING “Tesla is turning its cars into gaming devices. The firm’s next software update will add, among other features, at least three classic Atari games passengers will be able to play on the dash-mounted touchscreen. The update is coming soon to the Model 3, the Model S, and the Model X." according to Digital Trends: "Quizzed by journalists, he revealed he hopes to include Pole Position, Tempest, and Missile Command, games released in 1982, 1981, and 1980, respectively. While Atari games represent the highlight of V9.0, the update will include other important features outside of the infotainment system including what Musk calls full self-driving features for certain vehicles. This bolsters (but doesn’t confirm) earlier rumors claiming the next version of Autopilot will transition into a level-three system, meaning the driver will be able to take his or her hands off the wheel completely when the right conditions are met. Audi’s Traffic Jam Assist technology is an example of a level-three system. The Autopilot interface will evolve with the update, too." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/tesla-v90-adds-atari-games-camper-mode-better-autopilot/ A plug for tomorrow, on Saturdays now I'm trying to always bring you an interview. It feels right to do it at the weekend, all our routines are different and not doing the commute to work. Tomorrow it's a company called CleanCar which is working with large fleets to use a piece of hardware which tracks drivers routes and journeys, then recommends which type or EV or Plug In is best. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 2nd August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Some news in brief first... Tesla has increased it's referral round to September 16. Free unlimited supercharging for S, X and Model 3 Performance. Retroactively applied to all existing owners and from today, forward with new orders. I think i have this straight, ALL owners can give their referrals free unlimited Supercharging but only for the purchase of a Model S, Model X, or Model 3 Performance. Earnings Call! So where will they get capital for Giga 3, Giga 4, Semi and Y. Are they on target on profitability and cashflow positive in 2018? What's the cash balance, last time it was $2.7bn at start of Q2? Any update on Model 3 production. 6,000/week by End of August? How profitable is each car? If you remember Sandy Monroe took one apart and said there's a much bigger margin in it that some think. I wonder how many financial analysts understand the upside to building EVs? How will service scale with all those Model 3s? Will service Centres continue to be run to break even? Thoughts on the tapering down of the federal tax credit? Polestar 1 will debut in North American at Monterey Car Week from 23-26 August. NISSAN LEAF SALES DOWN IN THE U.S...AGAIN Eric Loveday for InsideEV's says: "You win some…you lose some. Or, in the case of the Nissan LEAF, you lose again." Eric digs into the monthly data writing: "With just 1,149 LEAFs sold in July, the electric hatch again sees sales down both month-over-month and year-over-year. In the month-over-month area, sales dropped off by 10.4% from the 1,376 LEAFs sold in June. Year-over-year, sales dipped by 8.5%, down from the 1,283 sold last July" When you see the InsideEVs estimate of 14,250 Model 3's sold in July alone, knowing it's only going upwards from there, it's painful for LEAF fans such as myself to see it has sold 7,808 all year. ALL YEAR! If you're a podcast listener and either have a LEAF on order in Europe, or bought one recently, what was the wait time? Are the orders holding up better over here? I'm not going to compare the Model 3 to a LEAF tough, maybe the exact ASP for a Model 3 Performance will be revealed on the earning call in a couple of hours but if I guess ~$70k, those cars aren't in competition with each other. https://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-sales-july-2018/ 2018 SALES IN EUROPE SHOW ELECTRIC UP, DIESEL DOWN In the first half of 2018, EVs were doing very well in Europe: "Alternative Fueled Vehicles (AFVs) performed well, as electrics, hybrids and plug-ins posted an increase of 31% and recorded 450,200 registrations, making up 5.4% of total registrations. They accounted for 56% of the total market in Norway, 13% in Finland and 11% in Sweden. However, AFVs only made up 3.4% of the German market." reports Green Car Congress. "The diesel decline continued during the first six months of 2018, as registrations were down by 17%. The fuel type accounted for just 37% of the total market—its lowest share since 2001. Diesel’s biggest declines took place in Norway (-32%), the UK (-30%), Slovenia (-28%), Finland (-20%) and Belgium (-20%)" Felipe Munoz, JATO’s global analyst: "It was certainly a good first half for the European market and this is due to the choice that consumers now have. Car makers continue to update and modernise their traditional models, while the range of SUVs on offer continues to grow and appeal to all kinds of budgets and needs. The diesel crisis certainly affected the speed of growth in the market, but consumers are overcoming this by turning to more attractive gasoline and AFV solutions." http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/08/20180801-jato.html TOYOTA SALES UP IN EUROPE And staying here in Europe can I talk Toyota? They currently have an ad campaign selling soft hybris as being "self charging" because, they claim, it can do a bit of regen. Now the reaction from the EV community has been overwhelmingly negative. For weeks they've been taking heat on social media. My personal opinion? I think it's frustrating because it obfuscates the technology. They claim it's aimed at people who don't understand hybrids, and who don't want a full electric, but i think they should the benefits of hybrid such as lower emissions. Anyway my opinion aside, because it really doesn't matter, how are sales? 46% of all Toyota are soft hybrids but against the 521,000 total cars sold, the amount of hybrids sold in a rounding error. They sold 1,693 plug in cars. So of course, against half a million cars, just over 1,500 plug ins is insignificant. Expecting them to do anything OTHER than promote soft hybrids at the expense of a a real EV is crazy. In response to criticism I've seen Toyota social media protesting they have a strong plan for plug ins, BEVs and fuel cell vehicles. Well this year they sold 101 Mirai's. 100 of which were for a taxi project in Paris. In other words, they sold one. https://insideevs.com/only-0-3-of-toyota-sales-in-europe-were-plug-in-hybrids/ VW PLANS WOLFSBURG CLOSURE 1-2 DAYS A WEEK TO DEAL WITH WLTP "Volkswagen plans to shut its main factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, for 1-2 days a week between August and end September to deal with issues arising from a new engine emissions test cycle." according to Autonews.com: "Volkswagen's plant in Emden will also be closed on some days in the third and fourth quarter due to lacklustre demand for midsized cars." MERCEDES-BENZ EQS CAUGHT IN SPY SHOTS "Spy photographers have recently captured a large electric sedan from Mercedes-Benz testing at Mercedes's headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany." says Eric Evarts for Green Car Reports: "In line with Mercedes-Benz's naming convention and statements from company executives, observers expect the new sedan to be called the EQS, sitting parallel in Mercedes-Benz's lineup with its flagship S-Class. Previous statements from Mercedes executives have hinted that the EQS will go on sale in 2020, likely as a 2021 model." MotorTrend has the pics, they say: "We now have the first spy shots of a large electric sedan to sit alongside the S-Class. Mercedes execs have previously hinted at the car starting production in 2020, which means we'll likely see it arrive in showrooms as a 2021 model." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117999_mercedes-benz-eqs-caught-in-spy-shots TESLA IS WORKING ON A ‘PARTY & CAMPER MODE’ Fred at Electrek picked up on a tweet by Elon Musk: "Tesla has already made available a ‘camper mode’ to let owners sleep in their cars while running things like climate control, but it now sounds like Tesla is going a step further to enable you to power all your outdoor fun." Elon tweeted: "We’re adding a “party & camper mode” soon to S/3/X, so your car can maintain air flow, temp, selective lights, music & power devices for 48 hours or more while parked. Big batteries rock" https://electrek.co/2018/07/31/tesla-party-camper-mode/ COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 198 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 1st August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Wednesday 1st August will see the Q2 Earnings Call for Tesla after the closing bell. TESLA TAKES 45% OF PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS SALES IN U.S. Mark Kane for Inside EV's: "In June, Tesla sold some 11,362 electric cars in the U.S., according to IEVs estimations, and that’s enough to achieve a new record share for the plug-in market. Believe it or not 45% of all plug-in cars sold last month (25,179) were Tesla cars, and that’s when you include plug-in hybrids. Limiting it to just BEVs (14,612), Tesla dominated the market at nearly 78%." The great unknown, for now, is Model 3 sales. How much did production slip back from 5000 a week after they hit that target in the final week of Q2? How quickly have they got back to 5,000? Elon immediately announced 6,000 being the next milestone, are they on target for that? In the first 6 months of the 2018 an estimated 124,687 plug-in electric vehicles have been sold in the U.S. With 6 months of the year remaining, if you put a 20,000 a month number on the Model 3, which would be revised down to allow for factory shutdown but revised up for increased ramp on the S curve even so that would be 120,000 Model 3’s out the gate in H2 2018. TESLA EXPLORES BUILDING GIGAFACTORY IN EUROPE: WALL STREET JOURNAL "Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is in talks with authorities in Germany and the Netherlands to build its first major European factory, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing officials involved in the matter." writes Sonam Rai for Reuters: "Tesla already has an engineering division in Pruem, Germany, that is about 30 kms from Belgium and about 100 kms from the French border." All future Gigafactories such as this one the one announced for China, Gigafactory 3, will be used to both produce the batteries and cars too. FIRST COMPLETE FF 91 BODY-IN-WHITE "Faraday Future announced today that the first complete body-in-white for the FF91 has arrived at the Hanford factory." That's effectively the first completed structural frame without anything bolted on. Senior VP of Manufacturing for FF, Dag Reckhorn, said: "There is no question that this team and our suppliers have faced many significant challenges in getting FF 91 to this point, and even slightly ahead of schedule. This is really a huge accomplishment over these past two years. All while focusing on the true luxury and quality of the final product." The order book for FF 91 early users – aka "FF Futurists" – has been open since the start of 2018 and first deliveries are due starting in December of this year through the middle of 2019. BMW TO BUILD 1 BILLION EURO ELECTRIC CAR FACTORY IN HUNGARY "BMW said it is investing 1 billion euros (US$1.17 bln) in a new car factory in Debrecen, Hungary capable of building electric cars. The plant will have a production capacity of 150,000 cars a year and be able to make both electric and combustion engined vehicles. BMW said it will help the carmaker to expand its manufacturing capacity in Europe, where 45 percent of its cars are sold." UPS TO TEST ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH THOR UPS today announced a collaboration with Thor Trucks to develop and test a fully-electric class 6 delivery truck in Los Angeles, California. The truck is expected to be ready for deployment later this year. The Thor electric delivery truck will have a driving range of approximately 100 miles powered by a Thor-designed and built battery that will be lightweight, durable and allow long-range driving distances. For six months, UPS will test the medium-duty electric delivery truck as part of its fleet. Testing will include off-road evaluation to address durability, battery capacity, technical integration, engineering and any items found during on-road testing. Depending on the success of the deployment, UPS may make additional purchases of the electric vehicle. Using its “Rolling Laboratory” approach, UPS deploys about 9,300 low-emission vehicles to determine which technology works best in each route configuration. This includes all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and propane. https://pressroom.ups.com/pressroom/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=PressReleases MERCEDES PRESENTS HYDROGEN FUEL CELL SPRINTER CONCEPT Daimler are moving forward with electrifying not just their cars but vans and trucks too. "Mercedes will start testing prototypes of a fuel-cell powered Sprinter, called F-Cell. Like the GLC with the same suffix, it draws electricity from either the hydrogen stored in cylindrical tanks in the underbody, or a small battery pack that can be charged externally." according to Fleet Europe.com: "That makes this Sprinter F-Cell the first ‘plug in hybrid’ zero-emission van ever, combining electricity produced in the fuel cell with current stored in the battery pack. There is a problem, however: the lack of hydrogen fuelling infrastructure. That is why Mercedes adds a battery pack – albeit a relatively small one. It extends the range by a mere 30 km at best – but that could suffice to get to the next hydrogen pump." TOYOTA PLOTS THE FUTURE OF ZERO-EMISSION HAULAGE "Toyota has strengthened its pursuit of zero-emission freight transport with the unveiling of a new, second-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck that can cover 300 miles on a full tank. The new Beta vehicle was presented to media and industry leaders at the Center for Automotive Research in Michigan" "The Alpha truck had a 36.3-tonne gross combined weight capacity and a driving range of more than 200 miles on a hydrogen fill-up. Two Mirai fuel cell stacks and a 12kW/h battery supported an output of more than 670bhp and 1,796Nm of torque. The new Project Portal Beta maintains these power and torque figures but with an extended range and improvements in other key performance metrics." UPDATE FROM WORKHORSE EV TRUCK TESTS Workhorse Group today provided an update on milestones achieved during its ongoing real-world pilot testing of its N-GEN all-electric vehicles: The N-GEN has demonstrated a fuel efficiency, as expressed in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), that averages 40MPGe for its 450 cubic foot electric van, and 75MPGe for its 200 cubic foot electric van, representing up to a 500% improvement versus conventional gas delivery vans. More than 100,000 packages delivered by Workhorse-employed drivers and delivery associates, offering invaluable insights to optimize the N-GEN production vehicle design for last-mile delivery workers. HARLEY DAVIDSON ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE COMING 2019 "The Harley-Davidson electric motorcycle has been a long time coming. First announced as Project LiveWire back in 2014, the bike has gone through some design changes as well as becoming only one of the electric bikes the company plans to release over the next few years. Finally, though, it looks as if the LiveWire will be available next year." reports Engadget: "The LiveWire is being hailed as "the first in a broad, no-clutch 'twist and go' portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of the sport" KINGFISHER TO INSTALL BATTERY STORAGE AT B&Q DISTRIBUTION CENTRE "Home improvement retail giant Kingfisher has announced (30 July) that it will install energy storage facilities at one of its B&Q distribution centres" - for translation, B&Q is Home Depot. Currently, around 35% of the power generated by the solar panels at the site is exported back to the grid as surplus, but the energy storage facility, which is set to be completed in September, will enable B&Q to store up to 40% of the energy generated by the PV panels and release it back to the building during periods of peak pricing or overnight. In addition to storing energy for use inside the centre, the battery installation will also power new electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the car park of the centre. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 30th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. LONDON POWERS AHEAD IN RANKING OF BEST CITIES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE "London has been revealed as the best city for electric vehicle (EV) charging points, beating environmentally conscious cities such as Oslo and Berlin." according to City AM: "In the UK, London has sailed ahead of Manchester, ranked 18th place; Edinburgh (31st) and Leeds (35th). Internationally, its closest rival was Amsterdam, closely followed by fellow Netherlands-based city Rotterdam in third place, while it comfortably beat Oslo, despite Norway having more EV sales per capita than any other country in the world. At the other end of the scale, cities such as Cape Town, Cairo, Sao Paulo and Seoul scored zero on the index because they lacked charging points or received low funding for EV initiatives." "In March the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, unveiled plans to install a further 100 rapid charging points to the 2,000 standard charging points already installed in the capital." …THE TOP 10 London, United Kingdom Amsterdam, Netherlands Rotterdam, Netherlands Berlin, Germany Hamburg, Germany Oslo, Norway New York, United States Lisbon, Portugal Munich, Germany Barcelona, Spain TOP 5 MARKETS FOR ALL-ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE Starting a geography lesson: "Norway is not the biggest European country, in fact it’s one of the smallest in terms of population, but still manages to stay on top the all-electric car market in Europe." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The rolling 12-month total sales for the top five markets, provided by EagleAID, shows that Germany is consistently growing for a strong second after Norway, while France and the UK seem stuck for some time. The Netherlands is on the rise, too" …THE TOP 5 Norway – 38,600 Germany – 33,600 France – 26,700 UK – 14,500 Netherlands – 12,700 https://insideevs.com/top-5-markets-for-all-electric-cars-in-europe/ BYD BOOMING IN THE NORDICS – BIG ELECTRIC BUS ORDER FOR BYD IN SWEDEN "After the recent Norwegian order for 42 articulated BYD electric buses for Oslo, now follows another large order from Sweden for a total of 24 electric buses." says Electric Cars Report. Isbrand Ho, Managing Director at BYD Europe: “BYD’s efforts in the Scandinavian market are paying off. Our recent orders in not only the Swedish but also in the Norwegian market have made BYD one of the leaders in the electric bus field. Winning this order gives us more confidence to win more in this important market. We are looking forward to turning Scandinavia even greener.” https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/07/byd-booming-in-the-nordics-big-electric-bus-order-for-byd-in-sweden/ CHINA LAUNCHES PILOT EV BATTERY RECYCLING SCHEMES "China will launch a pilot electric vehicle battery recycling scheme in 17 cities and regions, the industry ministry said, with Beijing keen to head off an emerging pollution threat." according a Reuters report over the weekend: "the cities and regions would encourage car producers to establish recycling service outlets and cooperate with battery producers, used car dealers and scrap merchants to build regional recycling systems. It said the entire industrial chain needed to be fully mobilized in order to ensure that EV batteries were recovered. It would strictly control the number of new enterprises involved in battery recycling and make full use of existing recycling bases in China in order to promote sustainable development in sector." "Data published by the industry ministry this week showed that China produced 413,200 new energy vehicles (NEV) in the first six months of this year, up 94.9 percent compared with a year earlier. Sales more than doubled to 412,000 units over the period." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-autos-batteries/china-launches-pilot-ev-battery-recycling-schemes-idUSKBN1KF375 TESLA REDEFINES ‘LUXURY’ SEGMENT AS INDUSTRY SHIFTS FOCUS TO TECHNOLOGY Simon Alvarez at Teslarati has been asking why Tesla are doing so well against the likes of Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 Series: "How then, are Tesla’s premium vehicles, which adopt a minimalistic theme and an almost spartan interior, performing so well in a market where more is usually better? By invoking a sense of luxury through deep software integration, of course." "I picked up this beauty 2 days ago and I can't say enough great things about it. Thank you @elonmusk and @Tesla for making the future fun and green! This car is the equivalent of ice cream flavored vegetables. Who knew being environmentally friendly could be so fun! pic.twitter.com/5filRGQQOW - Paul Storost (@PaulStorost) July 27, 2018 https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-luxury-amenities-software-integration/ FROM AN ASTON MARTIN TO A TESLA MODEL S: WHY ONE OWNER MADE THE CHANGE Autocar ask: "Why doesn’t Tesla do what just about every other car maker does and force sales by inflating discounts and trade-in allowances, and hang the consequences? It’s not as if it doesn’t need the income. At the end of the first quarter of 2018, the company’s debt stood at £1.5 billion." Well Tesla replied: "“We don’t discount because Tesla is a mission-driven company. We want to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport and energy, but not by profiting on things like vehicle trade-ins and discounting. The aim of our trade-in programme is to get the best price for the customer, not for Tesla. There is no profit angle. The service is to help customers get out of their current car and into a Tesla. There is no negotiating; simply the best price, first time.” "It’s why Tesla claims not to run its service departments as a profit centre (it says it runs them at break-even) and why it doesn’t insist on an annual service to maintain its new-car warranty. It recommends having one, but says that missing a service will not invalidate the warranty" https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/aston-martin-tesla-model-s-why-one-owner-made-change TESLA IS MAKING A $1500… SURFBOARD? "Tesla is no stranger to branded merch. Its got the standard company swag — the hats, the shirts, and the mugs. It’s got quirkier stuff, like miniature Teslas for kids and USB chargers shaped like the Superchargers that juice up their vehicles. And now they’ve got… surfboards?" writes Greg Jumparaak for TechCrunch. Product Description "“Designed by the Tesla Design Studio in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, surfboard shaper for World Surf League Championship athletes. The Limited Edition Tesla Surfboard features a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all our cars. The deck is reinforced with light-weight “Black Dart” carbon fiber, inspired by the interiors in our cars, and featuring tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss.” COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 195 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 29th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. US RESERVATIONS FOR THE AUDI E-TRON OPEN SEPTEMBER 2018 S. customers will be able to configure and reserve their 2019 Audi e-tron, the first all-electric vehicle from Audi, on Sept. 17. The e-tron will make its global debut on the same day at an event in San Francisco. T-minus 1 month 18 days. I'm excited for this one now! On Sept. 17, full e-tron specifications, including pricing, will be available at www.audiusa.com, giving customers the details needed to configure their e-tron and reserve their vehicle with a refundable $1,000 reservation fee. This new Audi reservation system is part of how Audi of America will create a digital ecosystem for Audi owners to confidently go electric. After customers place a reservation, they will be able to track it online and with their local dealer. Audi will share more details on this ecosystem and offerings for U.S. customers at the San Francisco event. As an electric SUV that includes integrated digital tools, in-home charging solutions and the support of Audi of America’s 303 dealer partners—e-tron owners can confidently choose electric performance knowing they have Audi support of a full ecosystem. "The 2019 E-Tron is a battery-powered, two-row crossover featuring dual electric motors and Audi’s brand new electric Quattro all-wheel drive system. Along with a range of about 245 miles from a 95kWh battery and, presumably, the automaker’s impressive driving dynamics, the SUV includes a number of integrated digital tools, in-home charging options, and what Audi describes as “ample cargo room and towing capacity.” reports Dan at New York Daily News. The E-Tron marks the first of three purely electric vehicles Audi plans to release by 2020. The company predicts that by 2025, up to 30 percent of its U.S. customers will have gone electric. Audi also touts a dedicated cooling system to help keep the battery operating at an optimal temperature, and to ensure repeatable performance. On top of that, Audi has put the e-tron Quattro's battery through extensive crash testing. According to Audi, the battery's "solid casing" is designed to withstand a collision. You can rapid charge at 150kW. https://www.audiusa.com/models/e-tron-preview MERCEDES EQC TO DEBUT IN STOCKHOLM Mercedes-Benz today confirmed the official premiere of the EQC production model on September 4, 2018 in Stockholm The EQC's two electric motors - front and rear - each with about 150 kW, should mean 0-60 in less than five seconds. However the battery on the EQC is smaller than the Audi, at 70kWh, and they're promising 400+kms. CCS DC Fast Charging will be possible up to 115kW. I've said before those numbers confuse me, either somewhere along the way the specs are wrong and the battery will be larger, or the range won’t be that far. How can a 2.5tonne SUV get 18Kwh/100kms? That's up there amongst very efficient cars. The Jaguar I-PACE certainly doesn't do 18kWh / 100km, if anyone listening now knows of a road test which has measured it, i'd love to know. AUTO TRADER REVEALS THE BEST ELECTRIC CARS OF 2018 Auto Trader has published a list of the best electric and hybrid cars according to affordability, luxury and range. The Renault Zoe has been named the best budget option, while the Tesla Model S has been named as the best for long ranges. The best budget option - Renault Zoe The Renault Zoe has been ranked as the best budget option. It’s one of the cheaper options on offer, and it can also be bought on a deal where you lease the battery from Renault, making the purchase price even more affordable. What’s more, the Zoe is smart-looking with a hi-tech interior, and also has a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. The best for long ranges - Tesla Model S A single charge of the Tesla Model S can get you almost 400 miles, making it a more viable option for consumers wanting to do more than pop into town. It boasts serious performance and some clever interior technology including a 17-inch touch-screen up front. The most aspirational - BMW i3 BMW has delivered a truly aspirational electric car, thanks not only to its badge, but also to its sharp, innovative design. It gives you plenty of speed and fun handling, too. The i3 car comes with a premium price tag, but you certainly get a premium product for your money. The most understated - Volkswagen e-Golf The e-Golf looks a lot like its non-electric counterpart, except with blue-tinted headlights and a different front grille. And, like any other Golf, it boasts all the same attributes - meaning high quality, family car practicality and a sophisticated driving experience - but with the added bonus of zero exhaust pollutants. The best British-built option - Nissan Leaf The British-built Leaf was the first vehicle to convince people in large numbers that an electric car was something to consider, and now there's a new one. Built in Sunderland, with an improved battery, more power, bigger range and better affordability, it is the perfect option for the middleweight buyer. TESLA PRODUCTION RISING TOWARD 7,000 VEHICLES A WEEK Zach at Clean Technica has been tracking Tesla production numbers and quoting a Twitter user who claims to have an insider who supplies daily Tesla production numbers. Of course there's no proof! "If you look at the broad trend, you see slow production growth over the past month, with some dips and with some days over 1,000/vehicles a day. The last update put yesterday’s daily production total at 1,100, with 780 of those being Model 3s. Of course, 1,100/day = 7,700/week if you extrapolate. But if you want the source of Tesla news, not a random Twitter account, from Elon himself is a good place to start: "He indicated a few days ago that Tesla has risen to ~6,000 Model S, X, and 3 per week, but many people have taken that ~6,000 to mean just the US because of what prefaced it, which could mean ~7,000 globally. Either way, we’re getting up there." LAND ROVER'S LEAST PRICEY MODEL DUE FOR MAKEOVER, PLUG-IN VARIANT "The Discovery Sport serves as an entry point to the Land Rover lineup, retailing in the U.S. for $37,795 before delivery and offering a similarly sized, cheaper alternative to its Range Rover Evoque platform mate." according to The Truth About Cars: "the Discovery Sport undergoes a significant revamp for 2020, and should make its public debut early next year. A hybrid version of the model will appear (though whether it will be available at launch isn’t known), combining a new three-cylinder engine with an electric motor. A plug-in hybrid variant is also on the horizon, as are mild hybrid models." FCA REVEALS THEIR PLANS FOR HYBRIDS AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES FCA has finally released the details about their introduction to the two new auto markets. The Plan…Over the next five years, FCA released these specifics about their plans: Invest $10 billion into electric vehicle development between 2018 – 2022 Place a larger focus on the breadwinners of the FCA Group: Jeep, Ram, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo Move away from diesels and methane-powered engines Produce 14 electric vehicles and four battery-electric vehicles for Jeep by 2021 Mixing up SRT and electric vehicles by making performance-oriented electric vehicles Compete with Tesla by making electric versions of popular Maserati models Expand the Fiat 500e with a wagon model BIG AUTOMAKERS ARE BREAKING THEMSELVES APART TO COMPETE WITH SILICON VALLEY "Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, is splitting itself up into three companies in order to make itself “fit for the future,” the automaker announced today. Mercedes-Benz, Daimler’s truck division, and Daimler’s mobility division will all become independent entities as a result of the effort " according to Sean O'Kane at The Verge: "By splitting these different pursuits into more discrete companies, Daimler says it hopes to give each one more “entrepreneurial freedom,” stronger “market and customer focus,” and the ability to strike up “faster and more flexible partnerships” in order to better compete in the constantly evolving auto industry. On Monday, Ford spun out a new entity called Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC. The American automaker also announced on Wednesday that it is planning a restructuring of its global business model “to enhance competitiveness.” COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 194 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 25th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. AUDI E-TRON GETS CLOSER We're now just over a month away from the official launch of the Audi e-tron Crossover, the first fully electric Audi and the first of the e-tron range. Reuters report "The e-tron crossover will be revealed Aug. 30 in Brussels and will have a range of about 240 miles. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler quoted the price in Germany as 80,000 euros (about $95,000) — that's compared to 77,850 euros for the entry-model Jaguar I-Pace S AWD and 92,230 euros for the entry-level Tesla Model X 75D." Sometimes on here I get bit of kickback for being positive of ALL electric car makers, and especially when those large legacy auto makers are being forced into it by Tesla, because we know they can operate at scale when they want. And Audi in Hungary is one example, where 6,000 employees produce about 9,000 engines each day for 32 production plants of the Volkswagen Group, that's almost 2million combustion engines in 2017. If they turn their focus to EVs it would be huge news. And from the VW Press Office: "On Tuesday, series production of electric motors officially started in Győr. The company has invested a double digit million amount to set up the motor production facility. Approximately 100 people are employed in this new area at present. For the production of electric motors, Audi Hungaria installed the innovative production equipment and islands within just one year. The departments for the development of electric motors and for production planning cooperated closely with the prototype manufacturing/ production technology centre in Győr to develop the required expertise. The current production capacity is for approximately 400 electric axle motors each day and can be gradually increased. At present, about 100 people are employed in this new area, to be increased to more than 130 by the end of the year. Production is with one‑shift operation, but will soon change to three shifts." "The electric motor from Győr offers numerous new features. With the stator – one of the core components of the motor – the aim is to insert as much of the thin enamelled copper wire as possible into the casing: the tighter the winding, the more efficient the power delivery. A new winding and inserting centre at Audi Hungaria makes it possible to wind the optimal amount of enamelled copper wire particularly compactly and then insert it into the casing. The electric axle consists of other large components such as the power electronics, which are located in their own housing, the gearing and two flange shafts that transmit the power to the wheels. The employees produce two electric axle drive systems for each Audi e-tron, as both the front and rear axles are driven – in good quattro tradition." https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2018/07/Audi_Hungaria.html THREE MORE MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE REVIEWS CNET's Kyle Hyatt: "the moment you mash the accelerator a whole new sensation hits, and it's immediately apparent what you're getting for the (considerable) added price. based on these early impressions, the Performance seems to be exactly what we expected all along: an experience not dissimilar from the standard Model 3, just a heck of a lot quicker." MotorTrend: "Even with four aboard, the Model 3 DMP surged ahead so startlingly that it stopped conversation. Except maybe for an uttered "Oh my god." I braked pretty hard and arched up the on-ramp toward the freeway. It was a flourish more akin to swiping a navigation route on your phone than driving a car on the actual road. In maybe 120 wheel revolutions, a high-performance hierarchy has been rattled. The European marques perennially atop the sport sedan podium are about to have trapdoors release beneath them. Although nothing has fundamentally changed with the car's steering or suspension (besides an imperceptible but CG-lowering 5-10mm drop in ride height), the dual motor and all-wheel drive give the compact Tesla a tensed, hair-trigger potency for leaping ahead or around whatever's in the way. It's pure jungle cat." Mark Vaughn, West Coast Editor for Autoweek: "Controlling all that power on its way to the wheels is a new vehicle dynamic control (VDC) system. Tesla no longer uses Bosch VDC but has instead made its own. Tesla says this allows engineers to more precisely tune the distribution of torque front and rear as well as side-to-side. Acceleration is strong; thrilling, even. It’s still unclear whether you have to do that chemically ridiculous 30-minute pre-conditioning drill to get the 3.5-second 0-60 figure, but whatever figure I was experiencing was impressing the heck out of me." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/auto/2018-tesla-model-3-performance/preview/ https://www.motortrend.com/cars/tesla/model-3/2018/2018-tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-review/ http://autoweek.com/article/car-reviews/first-drive-tesla-model-3-performance HYUNDAI KONA: GREAT LONG-RANGE, ALL-AROUND EV "The long anticipated Hyundai Kona EV, with a battery capacity up to 64 kWh, is now starting to arrive in the hands of customers and testers. It appears to be everything EV fans have hoped for, and more. If you want one, get your order in ASAP!" writes Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "Hyundai is only planning for 30,000 units per year in the near term. Most of the exports are currently going to Europe, and won’t be arriving in the US till later in 2018. Pricing for the long-range, 64 kWh version varies by market, but starts from around €34,000/US$40,000 equivalent in Norway (NKR 326,000), €39,000 in Germany, £36,000 in the UK, or €42,000 in France. US pricing will emerge towards the end of 2018. Incentives in some markets will effectively reduce these prices further. In Norway, at this price, the 64 kWh Kona is a similar cost to the Bolt/Ampera-e." Clean Technica say the charge speed is 80kW, and I thought it was 100kW. Checking the official Hyundai website says: "Charge Time / Quick Charge (DC) (connected to 100 kW DC fast charger). Approx. 54 min up to 80% state of charge" CHINESE LUXURY EV STARTUP GYON LAUNCHES NEXT MONTH IN L.A. "Another new Chinese electric car brand is on the way, called Gyon. Bankrolled by Sitech, itself an electric car brand under pioneering Chinese car manufacturer FAW, Gyon will launch during the summer. " KIA KX3 EV: CRETA-BASED ELECTRIC CAR SPOTTED "Images of the Kia KX3 EV have surfaced online. The Creta-based electric vehicle (EV) is rumoured to go on sale by the end of 2018 in China." according to Team BHP.com: "The KX3 in the all-electric guise is expected to be powered by an 109 BHP electric motor with a claimed top speed of 150 km/h. It gets a 45.2 KWh lithium-ion battery, however its maximum range is not yet known." https://www.team-bhp.com/news/kia-kx3-ev-creta-based-electric-car-spotted CARBONCOUNTER.COM MIT published a useful tool for comparing life cycle emissions (gCO2/mile) and TCO of different vehicle types. The plot area shows more than 100 popular new car models in the U.S. Move over each data point to get more information (on a touch device, tap). The x axis shows the lifetime cost of each vehicle per mile driven. The y axis shows the greenhouse gas emissions of each vehicle per mile driven. We include emissions from producing the different fuels and vehicles. Our results show that you don't have to pay more for a low-carbon-emitting vehicle. While the average greenhouse gas emissions of all cars are more than 50% higher than the 2030 target, most hybrid and electric vehicles meet that target today, with today's electricity mix. Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity production in California are half the U.S. average, and it shows. Emissions from electric vehicles drop below the 2040 climate target. Using a combination of low electricity emissions, high fuel prices, and a high share of city driving, we can construct a best case scenario for electric vehicles (EVs), where EVs are cheaper than comparable combustion engine vehicles. We can also do the opposite, choosing conditions that favour combustion engine cars. Even so, electric vehicles emit less than comparable combustion engine vehicles. Disabling the federal tax refunds and low fuel prices do make EVs quite pricey compared to gasoline cars though." U.S. TO PROPOSE REVOKING CALIFORNIA POWER TO SET AUTO EMISSIONS RULES We'll start with some news from Reuters: "The Trump administration is expected to propose revoking California’s ability to set state vehicle emissions rules and mandate electric vehicles as early as later this week, a government official briefed on the matter said. Proposed regulation that recommends freezing vehicle emissions requirements at 2020 levels through 2026, the official said on condition of anonymity because it has not yet been made public." Reuters go on to say: "The proposal is sure to spark a massive fight with California and a dozen other states that have adopted the rules. Eliminating the mandate could hurt automakers like Tesla Inc and General Motors that are investing billions in EVs. In January, California Governor Jerry Brown set a new target of 5 million zero-emission vehicles in California by 2030, up from a prior goal of 1.5 million by 2025. Automakers have announced plans to spend tens of billions of dollars to add dozens of new EV models." Ryan Beene at Bloomberg adds: "The state’s 2009 waiver under the Clean Air Act has allowed California to set emissions rules for cars and trucks that are more stringent than the federal government’s. But the state has aligned its rules with those set by the EPA and NHTSA in a so-called national program of clean-car rules. California, with more than 2 million new cars and light trucks sold last year, is the nation’s biggest state market -- on par with Canada. A dozen other states follow California’s vehicle rules, and together account for more than a third of U.S. auto sales. Colorado also plans to adopt California’s clean-car rules." TESLA ASKS SUPPLIERS FOR CASH BACK TO HELP TURN A PROFIT "Tesla has asked some suppliers to refund a portion of what the electric-car company has spent previously, an appeal that reflects the auto maker’s urgency to sustain operations during a critical production period." according to Tim Higgins for the Wall Street Journal, who claims: "[Tesla] is asking its suppliers for cash back to help it become profitable, according to a memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal that was sent to a supplier last week." SUPERCHARGER NETWORK VS THIRD PARTY NETWORKS Tesla Tweet: @Tesla "11,352 charging locations across the world and growing daily" Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said in a research note: ""There has been a flurry of OEM announcements regarding accelerating electric vehicle introductions, but most offer little detail on charging and battery manufacturing strategy, e see Tesla's rapidly growing infrastructure footprint as a key differentiator." Automotive News says: "Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Nissan, General Motors and others are plugging into third-party charging networks, such as EVgo, ChargePoint and Electrify America. In some cases, automakers have made strategic investments in the businesses. GM pays EVgo to develop an exclusive charger network for its Maven Gig car rentals. Daimler invested about $82 million in ChargePoint as part of a $125 million funding effort by the charging network last year." "Over a decade, Electrify America plans to invest $2 billion in a public fast-charger network open to customers of all automakers. The company, financed through Volkswagen's settlement over its diesel emissions cheating, will install or have under construction more than 4,800 EV charging stations by June 2019." http://www.autonews.com/article/20180723/MOBILITY/180729957/ev-charging-network-us VOLTA’S AD-SUPPORTED ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING SERVICE RAISES $35 MILLION San Francisco-based charging network Volta Charging has raised $35mn from investors. "[It] combines outdoor digital advertising with charging stations to give electric vehicle owners free power. It has already rolled out a network of 1,000 charging stations that are open for sponsorship, and hopes to reach 2,000 by the end of 2018, according to a statement from the company." according to Tech Crunch; "Volta rolled out its initial charging stations in Hawaii, but now has expanded its network to include the top 10 media markets in the U.S. (valuable real estate for any would-be advertiser). So far the company’s sponsored charging stations have given away 22 million miles worth of juice, or the equivalent of 9 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions." https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/23/voltas-ad-supported-electric-vehicle-charging-service-raises-35-million/ UK ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS FACE PAYING MORE TO CHARGE AT PEAK TIMES Adam Vaughan is always on the money on his articles for The Guardian here in the UK: "British electric car drivers face having to pay more to power their car if they refuse to shift their charging to off-peak times, in a move designed to lessen their burden on the electricity network. If enough drivers top up their cars when they get home from work, that would put extra pressure on power networks, which already face a peak in demand between 4pm and 6pm. Incentives to use cheaper charging could include energy tariffs that offered cheaper electricity at certain times, such as when solar and wind power are generating larger amounts of power, or when demand is low." Ofgem: "“If electric vehicle users choose to charge during peak times, under current arrangements they will impose considerable costs which will be borne by all consumers. Consumers should be rewarded for being flexible with their demand, but may pay a premium if their behaviour adds to peak demand or local congestion [on power networks]." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jul/23/uk-electric-car-drivers-charge-peak-times-ofgem-electricity FINAL SMART CHARGER INSTALLED FOR ELECTRIC NATION The Electric Nation project has installed its final smart charger as part of its trial with electric vehicle (EV) owners. The project will now be assessing the smart charging technology and feedback from trial participants." reports FleetNews: "Electric Nation, one of Western Power Distribution’s (WPD) innovation projects, with collaboration partners EA Technology, Drive Electric, Lucy Electric Grid Key and TRL, has been successful in achieving its recruitment targets, with more than 40 different makes and models of EVs taking part, installing 673 domestic smart chargers. One of the final smart charger installs was for Sunny Vara, who had a charger fitted to coincide with taking delivery of a new Tesla." "Electric Nation’s initial findings show that on average, vehicles are plugged in for 12 hours, but they are rarely charging for the full time. This suggests that there is likely to be sufficient flexibility to manage charging away from peak electricity demand periods. This will be explored in more detail as the trial continues during the remainder of 2018." https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/fleet-industry-news/2018/07/20/final-smart-charger-installed-for-electric-nation-project WILL FCA CHANGE OF CEO AFFECT EV PLANS? "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced Saturday that Sergio Marchionne, who rescued Fiat from bankruptcy in 2004 and acquired Chrysler after the financial crisis in 2009, had to quit his job because of ill health. He had been scheduled to retire in April 2019" according to Neil Winton for Forbes.com, talking about the new CEO Mike Manley: "Critics said FCA’s sudden embrace of electric cars was too late, and Fiat’s lack of SUVs would together cripple any plans to succeed in China, the world’s biggest market. They also said if the plan failed, FCA would be ripe for a takeover." https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2018/07/22/departure-of-revered-ceo-marchionne-might-boost-fca-stock-price/ CAR OF THE DECADE: ‘SAVAGELY QUICK’ TESLA MODEL S Hagerty is the well-known insurer of classic cars and vehicles, and they've named their 12 Cars Of The Decade beginning with the Ford Model T and working their way through the 2010's. And the best car you can buy NOW? Electric. Specifically the Tesla Model S. "[T]he Tesla has gone in a more radically different direction than any other car in recent memory. More importantly, it has done so with great success, because instead of coming out with an all-electric car that people felt that they should drive or that they had to drive, Tesla came out with an electric car that people really want to drive. It will always be remembered as the one that made electric cars truly desirable, and that’s why it is one of the greats." https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/keyword/the-greatest-cars AN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE FOR $1,995 IN THE US Micah Toll has been a long time subscription on my YouTube channel, i love his videos, and i love that recently he's been writing more for Electrek. Another one of those sites which sits in my favourites list. He says: "CSC Motorcycles has recently announced the new 2018 City Slicker electric motorcycle. As its name indicates, this two-wheeled EV is meant more for urban streets than for highway speeds. With a top speed of 46 mph. At 37 mph (60 km/h), the range is estimated at 37 miles (60 km). Slow down even further to 20 mph (32 km/h) and you’ll get a whopping 62 miles (100 km) of range." The bike has a 2.16kWh battery. Their CEO Steve Seidner says: "After the initial shipment, the City Slicker’s price will be $2495. That’s still many thousands of dollars less than any other electric motorcycle offered in America. We are taking deposits now and the motorcycles will be here this fall." https://electrek.co/2018/07/23/electric-motorcycle-for-2000-usd/ PEUGEOT 508 PLUG-IN HYBRID ARRIVING NEXT YEAR "The radically revamped Peugeot 508 will be available as a plug-in hybrid version in 2019, according to a report by Autocar UK. First revealed back in February, the sedan debuted with conventional petrol and diesel internal combustion engines only." writes Garard Tye for Paultag.org: "The 508 PHEV is said to employ a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine that boasts mild hybrid capability thanks to an integrated starter-generator motor." However it will also have a battery which you can plug in to charge, which is good for 50km. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 5th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. INSIDE EVS SCORECARD Steven Loveday starts to round up the North American sales: "If the trends persist, we should continue to see the final month of each quarter claiming the new lead spot on our all-time list, and June will likely prove this true." Topline number is at least 26,500. For Q2, GM sold 3,483 Bolt EVs and 4,336 Volts. Nissan delivered 1,367 LEAFs this June, down about 9% from last June and also down from May’s 1,576. Big questions remain like Tesla's 200,000 delivery. And how are the Model S and X selling? https://insideevs.com/june-2018-plug-in-electric-vehicle-sales-report-card/ AUDI E-TRON QUATTRO HIGH-TECH CABIN UNVEILED I've going to try and get through a piece talking about Audi's new e-tron Quattro without comparing it to the Jaguar I-PACE. So bear with me. Audi's new AWD EV is on the horizon, powered by 3 motors, a 95kWh battery pack delivering 250 silent miles on WLTP test cycle, with 150kW CCS fast charging to make use of the next gen chargers, the specs are certainly competitive and we know Audi make a fine car. 0-60 is under 6 seconds and top speed 124mph. But how much will it hurt with a launch date no sooner that a rather vague 'Spring 2019' given the I-PACE is out - DAMMIT. Sorry I won't do that again. As for price, it will start at $89,000, a $20,000 premium over the I-PACE - DAMMIT New interior photos have just been released and it's a stunning place to spend any time. There are two large centre touchscreens sitting just below the air vents. Of course the instrument panel behind the wheel is all digital too. Some journalists have been in the passenger seat, yesterday I was tweeting about CAR's review, and Auto Express have had a ridealong too: "On the move first thing you notice is the serenity on offer from its electric drivetrain; it’s much the same as we’ve experienced from its rivals. Although this early passenger ride was ostensibly to demonstrate the e-tron’s fine refinement and show us the new interior, we did manage to get the lowdown on the e-tron’s specification. Unlike its Mercedes-Benz EQ C rival, the e-tron will be built at a dedicated production line in Belgium, it riding on a unique, scalable platform, under which its 95kWh battery resides. Audi’s people admit that the platform is around 40 per cent stiffer than the Q5’s to allow for the e-tron’s weight, as well as help with its refinement and dynamic goals." The showstoppers are the side mirrors, of which there aren't any. Just two small aerodynamic stalks with HD cameras on them, called e-tron Virtual Side Mirrors. There are 7 inch OLED screens in the doors at the junction of the A-pillar so you just have to look slightly down from where you do for mirrors. Slashgear say: "However, because it’s all digital, Audi can switch up what’s shown depending on the situation. When you’re parking, for instance, the e-tron can show you a different view compared to when you’re on the highway. The upshot isn’t just aesthetic, though the electric SUV does look good without traditional mirrors. Audi claims the virtual mirrors help cut drag by between 2 and 7 percent, leaving the EV more aerodynamic as a result. That should pay dividends when it comes to range." "Scrubbing side mirrors can also pay visual dividends, too, and not just because the resulting body sides look sleeker. For its part, the e-Tron will still have a pair of small stanchions projecting out of its body sides to mount the rear-facing cameras, though they still should look much cleaner to the wind." reports CNET Sadly US regulations mandate that all cars have glass mirrors so only Europe and Asia get the sci fi cameras. However to make up for it, e-tron Quattro buyers can use Electrify America's high speed charging network with 290 locations installed by the end of next year. "Audi says that not only is the electric car’s drivetrain quieter than the typical gas or diesel engine, but it has packed the e-tron with even more noise insulation just to really deliver that cathedral-hush." say Slashgear on the subject of noise. Or lack of it. As for regen, as everyone loves a bit of regen, you can choose to sail for when on the highway, or ratchet up for town driving. https://www.slashgear.com/2020-audi-e-tron-electric-suv-cabin-revealed-5-things-to-know-04536502/ http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/audi/e-tron/103979/new-audi-e-tron-2018-ride-review DELIGHT FOR JAGUAR I-PACE AT 2018 AUTO EXPRESS NEW CAR AWARDS And a quick note on the I-PACE. There are lots of car awards events run by magazines, and they all have various categories. For a while EV's have been picking up wins in certain sub categories, but that changed last night. "The all-electric Jaguar I-PACE has been named Car of the Year at the 2018 Auto Express New Car Awards with Editor-in-Chief Steve Fowler describing it as: “the most exciting new car we’ve tested over the past 12 months.” according to Automotiveworld.com. Stat check on the I-PACE...90kWh lithium-ion battery, dual motors for AWD, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 298 miles on the WLTP test cycle. Steve Fowler, Editor-in-chief of Auto Express said: “The I-PACE proves that brilliant electric cars are right here, right now – it’s the most exciting new car we’ve tested over the past 12 months. We love the way it looks, the space and quality of the interior and most of all that it drives exactly how a modern-day Jaguar should – it’s fantastic fun. On top of all that, it’ll cover city-to-city distances on a single charge in complete comfort – it’s a massively impressive car that bodes well for our electric future.” https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/double-delight-electric-jaguar-pace-2018-auto-express-new-car-awards/ FORMER TOP GEAR PRESENTER TESTS NEW TESLA P100DL FOR ELECTRIC GT The Electric GT championship launches this year, not officially endorsed by Tesla by racing Model S P100DL's with a load of the interior weight stripped out and lots of carbon fibre-y bits added, which loses 1100 pounds overall. On the LoveCars YouTube channel the TV host and racing driver Tiff Needell take one for a spin in Barcelona at the cars launch. There is a race body kit, the door handles are permanently out which indicates the motors are all gone from there, and the Air Suspension is likely to be replaced with a lightweight and more customisable racing setup. Plus with improvements to the brakes and cooling a lot is different to a stock Model S. Simon at Teslarati says " the vehicle’s battery still showed some heating issues, as revealed by the Model S’ systems throttling performance after 1.5 hot laps around the Barcelona track" The series starts racing in Jerez on 4th November and I'll be there at the Silverstone event in 2019. TWO CAR SHARING SCHEMES ANNOUNCED You wait ages for a car sharing scheme and then two come along at once. And no the irony of that joke isn't lost on me, because maybe we should be using buses more and not adding more cars to inner cities. First up a saw Fred at Electrek writing about Renault, and 2,000 new EV's for Paris in ride-sharing services. "Starting in September, Renault will start to make all-electric ZOE, Twizy, Kangoo Z.E, Master Z.E vehicles available for a series of services." The previous car sharing service was Autolib and recently stopped after a dispute with local authorities. And then I see Reuters reporting: "Volkswagen plans to start offering car sharing services using fully electric vehicles in German cities next year as part of efforts to serve consumers who don’t want to buy their own vehicles. Its offering will compete in its home market with DriveNow and Car2Go, the soon-to-be-merged carsharing services of BMW and Daimler. New CEO Herbert Diess, who took office in April, said it was vital for VW “to pick up speed and make an unmistakable mark” in areas including new mobility services which VW wants to contribute a significant share to future group business." https://electrek.co/2018/07/04/renault-fleet-electric-vehicles-ride-hailing-car-sharing-paris/ https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-mobility/vw-to-launch-carsharing-with-electric-vehicles-in-2019-idUSKBN1JU1QK CHINA TO PRODUCE 2 MILLION CARS PER YEAR FROM 2020 And finally a bit of background on China. Because recently I’ve been super excited about Tesla hitting their goals but just a reminder the really big numbers are found when you head East - to China. Plug In sales, or New Energy Vehicles (NEV) as they are branded in China, are up 149% in Q1 this year. In May 94,000 new EV's were registered. The names you probably won't have heard of but which are a big deal... BAIC EC-Series - small family EV, modern styling, sold 12,624 last month, and could well beat the Tesla Model 3 to be the best selling EV in the world this year BYD Qin PHEV - has been selling between 3-4,000 models a month for 9 months. SAIC Baojun E100 - made by Shanghai Auto and GM. It's a tiny 2-seater like the Smart cars, has 39hp and costs just over $14,000. Zhidou D2 EC - looks like a small city car from the 90s, but super cheap, looks like a slightly larger Renault Twizy with a 18kWh battery. BAIC EX-Series - a compact crossover and the first of these 5 you might want on your driveway. Good styling, 48kWh battery, 200miles range and $28,500 price tag. Half of ALL plug in cars in the world last month, June 2018, were made by Chinese OEM's. They are on target to make and sell one million EV's this year. One. Million! And now a new action plan was released yesterday to move forwards. "China will cut coal consumption, boost electric vehicle sales and shut more outdated steel and coke capacity in the coming three years, the State Council said in a long-awaited 2018 to 2020 pollution action plan" reports Reuters: "China is in the fifth year of a “war on pollution” aimed at reversing the damage done to the country’s environment since the economy was opened up in 1978, with President Xi Jinping promising to use the full might of the Chinese Communist Party to meet the country’s goals. The new 2018 to 2020 action plan, released on the country’s official government website, will expand the fight to 82 cities across China. The cabinet also set an annual production and sales target for new energy vehicles at around 2 million vehicles a year by 2020 in order to reduce road emissions." https://in.reuters.com/article/china-pollution/china-to-cut-coal-use-curb-steel-in-2018-2020-pollution-plan-idINKBN1JU0BL COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 169 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
