Shoot us a Text.Episode #1038: Today we're talking about the expected surge in auto dealership M&A activity, Hyundai's latest software update that simplifies EV charging across major networks, and Tanger's decision to launch its back-to-school campaign early in response to ongoing tariff concerns.Show Notes with links:Though Q1 saw a dip in dealership buy-sell activity, The Presidio Group sees the rest of 2025 heating up. With election season uncertainty in the rearview, dealers may be ready to get back to the negotiating table.Q1 had 82 transactions involving 106 dealerships, down from 90 deals and 175 stores last year.Election year uncertainty slowed activity, but momentum is now rebounding with Presidio saying the pipeline is “robust” and expecting strong summer/fall dealmaking.Presidio President George Karolis said that tariffs are adding complexity, especially around brand valuation and sourcing strategies. However, many dealers are already looking past tariffs, and there are more buyers than sellers in the current market.“Certainly, [tariffs have] come up. If anything, maybe we're buying a little bit of time just to see what happens over the next 90 days before we finalize some transactions,” said Sonic Automotive President Jeff Dyke.Hyundai EV drivers just got a serious charging upgrade. With tighter app integration and support for plug-and-charge at Tesla Superchargers, the Ioniq lineup is catching up to the Tesla standard in user experience.New software upgrades bring MyHyundai app support for Tesla, ChargePoint, EVGo, and Ionna.Plug-and-charge is now available on Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, and future EVs—just plug in and go.App features include route planning, charger location, and direct in-app payments.Older Hyundai EVs can access Superchargers with an adapter; however the Kona EV is not yet supported. The upgrade aims to make EV charging “as easy as gassing up.”As tariffs loom large, outlet mall giant Tanger is speeding up its seasonal strategy. The company's early back-to-school campaign kicks off June 1, tapping into consumer concerns over rising prices and potential supply shortfalls.Tanger CEO Stephen Yalof says early shopping means better deals and availability. This year's campaign targets 10 million TangerClub members with urgent messaging and marks a pivot from last year's late-July start.Other retailers like Fashion Nova and Beis are also urging pre-tariff purchases.“If they can make decisions early and shop early, then they can take advantage of getting the products they want at the price they want,” said Yalof.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
Hyundai brings significant improvements to the Kona EV over the previous-generation model. We share our first impressions of the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric, the power plant, driving dynamics, controls, and what it has to offer for buyers looking to purchase a sensible electric vehicle. Also, we discuss why it is important for EV owners to pay close attention to the 12-volt battery in their electric cars. Our experts had fun making up their own frankencar, choosing the motor, transmission, chassis, interior, and body from any car they wished and making their own creation. When Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway invested $232 million into China's BYD, it was a nascent startup that had just started selling electric vehicles. Fourteen years on, Berkshire's stake is worth $7.5 billion dollars and BYD has dethroned Tesla as the world's biggest EV maker by sales. Between April and June, BYD shipped 3.54 lakh EV units, an increase of 266% year-on-year, while Tesla's global sales grew 27% to over 2.54 lakh units. It also overtook South Korea's LG Energy as the world's second-biggest EV battery manufacturer, behind China's CATL. The Shenzen-based group is now aggressively pushing into foreign markets, including India where it is set to unveil its first e-SUV soon, with deliveries beginning in January. The company has been selling its electric MPV e6 to corporate and fleet customers in India since November 2021. Its upcoming model, the Atto3, will also be assembled at BYD's plant near Chennai which has an installed capacity of 10,000 units per annum. Tigor and Nexon EV maker Tata Motors held a whopping 85% share of the passenger EV market in FY22. They were followed by China's SAIC-owned British brand MG Motors at 11.5% with its ZS EV. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association, out of the 2.72 million passenger vehicles retailed in India in FY22, EVs constituted just 17,802 units or 0.65%. However, this represents a 257% jump over FY21. Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior VP, Electric Passenger Vehicle Business, BYD India says we have our own technologies that give us an edge. BYD India will initially sell top-of-the-line premium EVs. By 2030, we are aiming at a 40% e-PV market share. India is among a handful of countries that support the global EV30@30 campaign, which aims to have at least 30% of new vehicle sales be electric by 2030. BYD's entry is a sign of the growing interest of global carmakers to gain a foothold in India's EV market. After launching Kona EV in 2019 to test the market, Hyundai India is getting ready to launch its first electric crossover, Ioniq 5, this year. The South Korean firm has also started developing a small electric car for India as part of its plan to launch six EVs in India by 2028. Hyundai's sister company Kia launched its first electric car in India, the premium crossover EV6, recently. Sweden's Volvo debuted its electric compact SUV XC40 Recharge in India in July. Tata's electric SUV Curvv will hit the market within the next two years while MG Motor will launch an affordable mass-market EV next year. Volkswagen is also looking to sell its first electric car, the ID.4 SUV, in India in limited quantities next year. Mahindra & Mahindra will launch five electric SUVs for both domestic and international markets starting in 2024. Tata Motors plans to launch the Avinya, its pure electric car, in 2025. Luxury car firms are not holding back either. Mercedes-Benz will become the first company to assemble a luxury EV in India as it launches three electric cars this year. Audi India's launched its maiden EV offering e-tron last year. In a span of six months, BMW launched three electric models in India - the iX SUV, MINI hatchback and i4 sedan. Porsche has brought its all-electric Taycan and Jaguar its I-PACE. American EV startup Fisker is aiming to launch two EVs in India. Experts say the pace of electrification in the luxury segment is expected to be much faster than the mass car segment Sanjay Gopalakrishnan of BYD India says 45,000 to 50,000 EV cars could be sold in India this year. Only the initial 1.5% to 2% EV adoption takes times. EV adoption will pick up when resale market emerges. At the current pace, EVs could make up as much as 1.4% of total domestic passenger vehicle sales this year signalling an increase in adoption. With more than a dozen OEMs vying for India's EV passenger vehicle market, first movers like Tata Motors and MG Motors are set to face some serious co

AUDI SEES ELECTRIC CARS BECOMING AS PROFITABLE AS GAS-POWERED CARS WITHIN 2-3 YEARS - Audi CEO Markus Duesmann says that he sees electric cars becoming as profitable as gas-powered cars within the next two to three years. - Last month, the German premium automotive brand announced an acceleration of its electrification plans. - It included plans to produce their last internal combustion engine in 2033 (if people are still buying them by then), and a plan to only launch new vehicles that are electric by 2026. - A new report from Germany's Spiegel states that Audi CEO Markus Duesmann is currently expecting the brand's electric vehicles to become as profitable as its gas-powered vehicles within the next two to three years. It would imply that Audi's current electric lineup, the e-tron, e-tron Q4, and e-tron GT, are not as profitable as their gas-powered counterparts. The new driving range of the Long Range Model 3, for example, is now 580km, whereas previously it was 657km. The Standard Range Plus, which was previously 508km, now says it can only drive 448km, and the Performance now says 567km where it once said 628km. - Tesla has (finally!) decided to use Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) ratings, which have been in use since 2017 and are used to measure carbon emissions and energy consumption of vehicles. Previously, Tesla stated range figures developed using requirements developed under the Australian Design Rule 81/02 — Fuel Consumption Labelling for Light Vehicles), which was developed in line with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) rating, before the WLTP was introduced. - Other carmakers in Australia that import electric vehicles, such as Hyundai (eg the Kona EV with 64kWh battery with 484km range), have been using WLTP for some time so it is good to see Tesla move in line with this. The converted Fuso eCanter will be used for emission-free deliveries to cafés in Amsterdam's city centre. - the truck is 5.3 metres long and two metres wide, which makes it suitable for urban use. Empty, the vehicle weighs four tonnes. Two charging specifications are important for the beer transporter: The beer tank, manufactured by Duotank, can hold up to 3,000 litres, and the battery has a capacity of 82.8 kWh. - From the brewery in Den Bosch, a larger truck transports 200 hectolitres of beer (i.e. 20,000 litres) to the outskirts of Amsterdam. There, 30 hectolitres each are pumped into the two mini-tank beer trucks. These then supply around five cafés in the city centre before they have to refill with fresh beer on the outskirts again. Supplying the cafés with the large truck would not be possible even with an electric drive: to protect the quays and bridges, a maximum of 7.5 tonnes is allowed here. The permanent-magnet motor delivers 129 kW (180 hp) via a single-gear transmission in the rear axle. A single charge gives the truck an effective operating range of more than 62 miles (100 km), which is ample for many urban delivery applications. - It sets off at 4am each day from Warburtons' Bolton bakery and delivers fresh bread to as many as 25 different customers, mainly in the central Manchester area. They range from large supermarkets to independent corner shops. In a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the Shenzhen-based company said its sales of NEVs, including purely electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, surged 192.03 percent year on year to 41,366 units in June. In the first half of 2021, BYD sold 154,579 NEVs, up 154.76 percent year on year. According to the website "Auto Insurance Quote," Salt Lake City is on top when it comes to charging stations, electric vehicle incentives, and electricity cost. - Researchers determined the "best" cities by analyzing data from the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Council on Clean Transportation, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to find the cities with the most charging stations per capita, identify local government electric vehicles incentives, and quantify the cost of electricity - No. 2: Sacramento, Calif. These standards will provide industry with guidance and drivers with a new clear definition of ‘fully accessible', ‘partially accessible' and ‘not accessible' public EV chargepoints. The design of public chargepoints is already carefully considered by operators. However, consistent standards are crucial for drivers to easily identify which chargepoints are suitable for their needs. This could range from adequate space between bollards, charging units being of a height suitable for wheelchair users, size of the parking bay and the kerb height. · Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/oojoL/ · Original Source : https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-government-partners-with-disability-charity-to-set-standards-for-electric-vehicle-chargepoints SOLARWATT FLEXES MUSCLES IN HOME ENERGY STORAGE FIGHT WITH SHELL, TESLA - Germany's Solarwatt, backed by BMW's billionaire shareholder Stefan Quandt, plans to launch a small module that lets homeowners link rooftop solar panels to power storage batteries and electric vehicles to cut costs. The wallbox allows home owners to control when and how much home-produced photovoltaics (PV) power they store, use to charge their electric vehicles (EVs), or sell to the grid. - The Manager Flex device, which looks like a wifi router and will go on sale at around 500 euros ($594), allows the integration of energy flows and gadgets at home, such as rooftop panels, batteries, electric heat pumps and EV-charging boxes. - Solarwatt, also active in France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain and Australia, aims to be a top five player by the end of 2022 - Germany is an obvious starting point. With 300,000 stationary batteries, it is the world's top home storage market, ahead of the United States, Japan and Australia. - "The ramp-up of EV sales will directly induce a corresponding run on smart energy products in the household sphere," said PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Steffen Apfel.Sonnen's CEO Oliver Koch said EVs are driving demand for the company's PV systems and batteries: "A third of buyers (of those segments) add a charging device for their EV," he said. - EV makers have started exploring links between EVs and home power circuits, to morph home and car electricity into one, and between EVs and grids, to offer stability services and recycle used batteries. You know how I always say ‘never modify a new car to do what you want it to do’? Well, when it comes to the Hyundai Kona Electric after 7000-ish kays, I am really quite pleased I didn’t take my own advice on that. Details next. Like, it’s just over one per cent of the price of the vehicle. Tyres are actually the most cost-effective automotive performance modification of all time - because they bolt straight up, and they enhance acceleration, cornering and braking. Show me the other mod which can do so much, for so little. All you need to bring to the party is skill. So, 400 kays down the track, split between the ‘burbs and the open road... The biggest single difference is lateral grip. Which also means more roll too, which makes the electron-powered Kona feel more confident during assertive cornering. More progressive transition from grip to slip Better on-centre feel and positive return to centre out of a bend. You also get better high-speed stability - and stability transitioning the crown for overtaking. Better - astoundingly better - in the wet. It’s a complete dynamics character change. Tyres all look black and round, but there’s a vast difference between the crap ones and the good ones, and these Michelins are very good. There’s an amazing amount of tech - so here’s just a small insight… Tread specificity - outside for grip, concentric ring for high-speed stability and inside edge for water dispersal No spare for the Kona EV - you get a mini compressor and some goo. So a plug kit like this one can pay a real dividend on the open road. It won’t fix all punctures but it will keep you mobile after a simple puncture. I got mine from Sparesbox. Noisier, and probably won’t last as long. Quite expensive. But you get what you pay for - and you can certainly buy tyres from brands you’ve never heard of for less than half the price. But my strong advice is: don’t penny-pinch on tyres - you never know when that extra grip might save your life, or someone else’s. Overall, a tremendously positive change. I found them selling online for about $230 each (although Hyundai supplied these ones free and pre-scuffed from a previous assignment).
I just designed the perfect mainstream EV - it’s perfect - and nobody’s making it. Yet. (It’s more of a feasibility study, really.) This is a massive automotive industry opportunity. Save thousands on any new car (Australia-only): https://autoexpert.com.au/contact AutoExpert discount roadside assistance package: https://247roadservices.com.au/autoexpert/ Did you like this report? You can help support the channel, securely via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DSL9A3MWEMNBW&source=url I remain the ultimate EV skeptic. I don’t worship at the church of Electric Jesus. Never will. And yet I’ve been driving a Hyundai Kona Electric for about 6000km now. And I do enjoy driving it. I love not going to the filling station - nostalgia factor there: -273 degrees C, on a warm day. I love the way that Kona EV gets off the mark - silent but deadly. Peak torque at zero rpm. Awesome. And I’ve never needed it to take me more than 450 kilometres in a day. It’s good on the highway, too. When I have occasionally run it down to under 10 per cent remaining, it still charges up overnight on a single-phase 240-volt, 32-amp charger at home. (That’s like maxxed-out at-home charging - 7.7 kilowatts. Set and forget, there - also brilliant.) I like not contributing to air pollution in our cities. (At least in that car - in the other two big diesel tanks in the driveway … call me a hypocrite on that.) And energy security for Shitsville - so important. [MALS] EVs certainly have a niche carved out and well defined there, even though the grid remains properly filthy. But there is an EV elephant in this room: the fundamental impediment to mainstream adoption of EVs is price. The mighty Kona Electric is $25,000 more than its petrol counterpart. Like mid-$40s drive-away for the 1.6 Turbo Highlander. About $70,000 for the EV. That’s a massive monetary hit. The petrol MG ZS is $17,000 cheaper than the EV. Only a proper EV zealot with cash to burn can justify this, or perhaps a business looking to wear its green credentials on its sleeve. And, look, there’s nothing wrong with doing that - economic rationalism is not a prerequisite for owning a vehicle. I’m just saying economic irrationalism limits the number of EV sales that can be made, ultimately. Look at the opportunity cost: What else could you do with the $17-25 grand? Most people would say: Plenty. The only two ways to make this work on the corporate side are to charge a bomb and just trickle EVs through to receptive, wealthy zealots and let market forces work it out, or petition the government to subsidise EVs so they can go mainstream. What if there were a better EV? What if the car industry took its head out of its arse and instead made the EV that people actually need, with a balance sheet that balanced? (As opposed to the zealot-magnet.) I’m talking about a new EV segment: the shitbox EV. A fairly nasty second car. A runaround with minimal features, and not much range. Just right for average driving in built-up areas, a kid-school delivery and recovery device, right at home at the commuter car park or the local shopping centre. A device with roughly the raw sex appeal of a sandwich press. A device for which the primary purpose is simply to take the load off your nice, liquid-fuelled car. I actually think this is economically rational already - even though no carmaker is apparently doing it.

MADE IN CHINA MODEL 3'S LEAVE FOR EUROPE NEXT TUESDAY "The first batch of Gigafactory Shanghai’s China-made Model 3 is about to begin their journey to Europe. The vehicles are reportedly en route to the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, where they will be distributed to countries such as Germany and France." says Teslarati: "Recent reports from Chinese media have announced the shipment of thousands of Made-in-China Standard Range Plus Model 3s from Gigafactory Shanghai. As noted by Tesla owner-enthusiast @Ray4Tesla, the shipments will start next week on Tuesday, October 27. Tesla owner-enthusiast Armand Vervaeck suggested that the China-made Model 3s could be shipped by train to Europe due to the vehicles being fitted with protective wraps. Based on comments under Teslarati’s previous article, it seems that shipments by train would have an estimated arrival time of two weeks." This does point to towards Model Y coming to Europe, if demand in China allows. And Model 3 from Fremont no longer has to do the 20 day journey down the West Coast, Mexico etc, through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic. Plus the margin on those MIC cars is much better. As a commenter notes: "Tesla can charge more for an SR+ in Europe vs China, LFP Version provides better margin compared to the US Model 3 might be battery cell constraint along with the model Y ramp. So to supply Europe, they can further diversify their cells. So I believe they bypass Chinese demand in favor of supplying Europe. Instead of one million miles, the batteries are now expected to last 10,000 cycles and provide traction power for more than two million miles – that’s about 3.2 million kilometers." says electrive: "With “special additives”, the batteries should be able to withstand 10,000 cycles. Assuming a relatively conservative 350 kilometer range per cycle (i.e., a full charge from 0 to 100 percent), this would be 3.5 million kilometers. Whether 3.2 or 3.5 million kilometers: the one million miles or 1.6 million kilometers announced in September 2019 seem to be clearly surpassed. If the batteries were only discharged by 25 to 50 per cent of their capacity, they would show almost no degradation. This is a charge level range that many electric car drivers use in practice – the battery is rarely discharged to less than 20 per cent, on the other hand, it is rarely charged over 80 per cent." https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/19/tesla-researchers-present-battery-with-2-million-mile-lifecycle/ TESLA HAS OVER 120 OPERATIONAL MICROGRIDS "Tesla has over 120 operational microgrids around the world using its batteries and renewable energy, according to a new comment from an executive. Ever since the launch of Tesla Energy and its stationary energy storage products, Tesla started working on microgrid projects" says electrek: "Michael Snyder, director of engineering and construction, energy projects at Tesla, released the information in a Linkedin post about a new position on the microgrid team: If you like solving problems at the nexus of power systems interactions, protection coordination, system and product level controls, and DERs (Powerpacks, Megapacks, solar, and generators), check out the link below for a microgrid-focused product engineer. We have 120+ operational microgrids around the world with high impact to a variety of communities/customers. This is a unique and rewarding role." https://electrek.co/2020/10/19/tesla-120-operational-microgrids-world/ TESLA EXPANDS CHARGING IN EUROPE Tesla’s Supercharger network has rapidly expanded since the beginning of the quarter with over 250 new Supercharging stalls located all over Europe, with around 240 of these being V3 Superchargers. All our chargers are placed on well-travelled routes which allow you to explore every corner of Europe. The following Tesla Supercharging sites have been opened since July 1st 2020: Denmark: Ikast – 12 stalls Finland: Huittinen – 6 stalls (2 V2) France: Angoulême, Sisteron, Les Herbiers - 28 stalls (4 V2) Germany: Berlin EUREF Campus, Braak, Eschborn, Herzsprung, Wismar, Hilden – 72 stalls (4 V2) Iceland: Fossvogur – 4 stalls (V2) Italy: Forli – 4 stalls Netherlands: Akersloot, Apeldoorn Oost, Middelburg, Rijswijk – 40 stalls Norway: Aksdal South, Bamble – 36 stalls Portugal: Loule – 8 stalls Spain: Aranda de Duero – 4 stalls Switzerland: Bulle, Martigny – 16 stalls UK: Fort William, Hilton Park Southbound, Leeds-Whitehouse, Lifton, Manchester South, Wyboston – 42 stalls (14 V2) Across Europe there are over 5300 Supercharger stalls spread across nearly 530 locations and 29 countries in Europe. The Tesla Supercharger Network will continue to expand around the globe to enable all-electric journeys to be effortless. PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID "Porsche has announced two new hybrid powertrains for its Panamera hatchback and Panamera Sport Turismo estate, bringing back the 4 E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid models to the range. These join the 4S E-Hybrid that was launched when the Panamera was facelifted a few months back" writes evo.co.uk: "The Turbo S E-Hybrid reclaims its position as the most powerful Panamera derivative, now peaking at 690bhp, 9bhp more than before. The extra power is derived from the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine at the core of the powertrain, which on its own produces 563bhp. Despite its near 2500kg kerb weight, the Turbo S E-Hybrid will reach 62mph in 3.2sec (0.2sec quicker than the previous model) and go on to 196mph, while also being able to cruise for up to 31 miles on the electric motors alone. "The German plugin vehicle market had another record month in September, with a little over 41,000 registrations. Plugin hybrid (PHEV) registrations continued going through the roof, up 463% to 20,127 units" reports Clean Technica: "The plugin vehicle share reached a record 16% (8% fully electric vehicles/BEV), pulling the yearly tally to 10% (4.8% BEV), so this market has officially reached double digits, also known as … The Disruption Zone." "LG Chem already has two battery cell plants in Europe and both are in Poland where most of LG Chem’s global battery cell production is located. If production capacity is expanded at its already operating plants, LG Chem can produce 120 GWh annually and this would be enough to assemble more than 2 million (2.400.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each." according to PushEVs: "With a third battery cell plant in Europe LG Chem expects to reach a global annual production capacity of 260 GWh by 2023. This would be enough to produce more than 5 million (5.200.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each." https://pushevs.com/2020/10/19/lg-chem-plans-to-build-a-new-factory-in-europe/ BMW PRODUCED ITS 200,000TH I3 MODEL "The 200 000th BMW i3 model rolled off the production line yesterday – almost silently as always. The BMW i3s with Fluid Black metallic paint finish and accents in BMW i Blue was produced for a customer from Saxony and will be delivered by the BMW branch in Leipzig." "With the start of production in 2013, the plant in Saxony became a pioneer and centre of excellence for sustainable mobility. The BMW i3 was the BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered large-scale serial model and also the company’s first vehicle with a passenger cell made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic" https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/10/bmw-produced-its-200000th-i3-model/ FOUR CAR CHARGING NETWORKS JOIN OCTOPUS ENERGY NETWORK Octopus Energy announces that four electric vehicle (EV) charging firms have joined its Electric Juice Network in a bid to simplify on-street charging. Leading charging networks Franklin Energy LiFe, Hubsta, Alfa Power and Plug-N-Go have joined the roaming service, taking the total number of chargers to over 1,000 across the UK. And finally the least important part of the show...the Supercharger Route Planner still only gives you option to plan a route for a Model S or X. ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE SAVED 3.6 BILLION LITRES OF FUEL IN THE US The transition to electric vehicles has saved 3.6 billion litres of fuel in the US, with a third of that saved in 2018 alone, new figures from the US Department of Energy have shown." reports Bridie for driven.io: "With more than 1.2 million light plug-in (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) now sold in the US alone, amounting to 25 billion miles (40 billion kilometres) driven by PHEVs and BEVs since 2010, fuel consumption by light vehicles has been reduced by 0.23 per cent, the report says. Electric vehicles are still more efficient, even when powered by coal-sourced electricity. But even so, the source of that electricity may bear consideration. In California, 40 per cent of electricity generation is consumed by the transport sector, according to the EIA using data from 2017 – making it the biggest consumer of electricity." https://thedriven.io/2019/06/14/electric-vehicles-have-saved-3-6-billion-litres-of-fuel-in-the-us/ PORSCHE TAYCAN SPIED DURING TIRE-SCREECHING TEST AT THE 'RING More video online of the Porsche Taycan: "Confirmed for a September reveal, the company’s very first EV has been caught for the umpteenth time at the Nürburgring flaunting those hilarious “exhausts” to prove the Germans do have a sense of humor." writes Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "You might be tempted to say the zero-emissions sedan was not wearing any camouflage, but as it approaches a roundabout at the 1:11 mark, we can see it had quite a lot of black tape on the body and also stickers masking the lights. Later in the video, around the 4:15 mark, the prototype is seen in traffic passing by a gas station to reveal its deceiving body-colored camouflage also used by other future members of the Volkswagen Group family." https://www.motor1.com/news/354516/porsche-taycan-spy-video-nurburgring/ FCA SIGNS PARTNERSHIPS WITH ENEL X AND ENGIE GROUP Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has signed two agreements for new e-Mobility solutions to support the production and distribution of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full-electric (BEV) models rolling out as part of the Group’s 2018-2022 business plan. Through these agreements, FCA dealers will be able to offer innovative charging solutions and services to retail and business customers. This initiative also includes research and testing of new technologies to reduce the total cost of ownership of electrified vehicles. Mike Manley, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said: “These partnerships build on the e-mobility strategy we announced last year as part of our five-year business plan We are assembling an eco-system of partners, products and services across multiple markets to meet and exceed the rapidly evolving expectations of our customers for electrified vehicles.” The primary objective of the two partnerships is to offer private and public charging solutions to support sales of FCA’s forthcoming electric vehicle line-up including the soon-to-be-launched Fiat 5oo BEV and Jeep Renegade PHEV. . This includes offering customers the option of installing a home charging point (or “wallbox”) suited to their specific requirements, including charging optimization and smart management. Each partner will support FCA customers with the preliminary feasibility assessment and installation of the wallbox, as well as ongoing management and maintenance throughout the life of the customer vehicle and wallbox. In addition to home charging points, customers will also be offered cost-efficient and convenient access to public charging solutions. FCA and its partners will collaborate on the development of apps that will enable customers to locate public charging points, as well as book and pay for charging services via their vehicle’s integrated connectivity capability. 2019 JAGUAR I-PACE EV400 HSE REVIEW Brandon Turkus at Motor1 has driven the Jaguar I-PACE and written his review: "With 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque, the I-Pace’s twin electric motors sit neatly between the E-Tron (355 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque, boosted to 402 hp and 490 lb-ft in Boost Mode) and EQC (402 hp and 561 lb-ft). And yet, the Jag is quicker than both its German rivals, taking just 4.5 seconds to hit 60 compared to 5.5 in the Audi and 4.8 in the EQC. The way the Jag gets to that speed, though, is very similar to the Germans. This is an electric car, and its two motors dole out torque-rich performance in big, immediately available lumps. Part of that is down to the single-speed automatic transmission. It’s quick to engage, so there’s hardly any waiting while the torque gets to the ground. But the I-Pace’s handling differs from its rivals. This is a charming dance partner, tipping the scales at a light (for the segment) 4,784 pounds. Its lower center of gravity – the I-Pace is only 61.3 inches tall, over two inches lower than the next closest rival, the 63.9-inch EQC – and more aggressive air suspension deliver a sharper, flatter handling character. You want to toss the I-Pace around and have some fun with it; take advantage of the quick steering and the darty way it can change directions. It’s quite a change of pace from taller, heavier rivals that focus on ride comfort." https://www.motor1.com/reviews/354870/2019-jaguar-i-pace-ev400-hse-review/ VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R RETURNS TO GOODWOOD WITH SPECIAL SPRINT VERSION "Volkswagen announced the return of the I.D. R to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (4 to 7 July) to defend its record EV time of 43.86 seconds from 2018." says InsideEVs.com: "While a year ago the German manufacturer simply used the same technical configuration as at the much longer and more demanding Pikes Peak hill climb, this year Volkswagen developed a special sprint version of the I.D. R. It will be equipped with smaller and lighter, high-power battery pack just for the 1.86-kilometer route, which gives hope to not only improve the record but maybe set an all-time record for the track (41.6 by Nick Heidfeld in McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car in 1999)." https://insideevs.com/news/354805/volkswagen-id-r-returns-goodwood-sprint-version/ FUEL CELL FERRY WATER GO ROUND FINDS FLEET INVESTMENT "The hydrogen ferry Water Go Round currently under construction in the US has found new funding for setting up an entire fleet. SW/TCH Maritime, an investment platform for all kinds of electric maritime vessels is now on board." says electrive.com: "A first unit of the 84-passenger ferry powered by fuel cells is currently under construction at the Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in California and set for completion this September. The next step will be a three-month trial in the San Francisco Bay, also to act as a flagship for SW/TCH’s future fleet. The tanks will hold up to 264 kg of hydrogen, which is enough to run the ferry for two days straight, according to the manufacturers. For refilling the tanks, SW/TCH is partnering with Clean Marine Energy (CME) to develop electric charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure onshore." https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/13/fuel-cell-ferry-water-go-round-finds-fleet-investment/ TESLA IS DELIVERING 1,000 CARS A DAY EN ROUTE TO RECORD QUARTER "Electrek has learned that Tesla is currently delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day. As we reported earlier this month, Tesla aims to deliver between 33,000 and 36,000 vehicles in June in North America to break its delivery record." says Fred Lambert: "According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla has been delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day in North America so far this month. Furthermore, there are almost 7,000 more deliveries planned over the next 7 days and even more last-minute deliveries are expected over the last week of the quarter as buyers try to get deliveries before the now $3,750 federal tax credit on Tesla vehicles goes down again. It’s important to keep in mind that even if Tesla doesn’t achieve this record, they are still delivering all-electric vehicles at a higher pace than any other automaker at this point. By a huge margin. In North America, Tesla is delivering more EVs in 3 days than GM is delivering in a whole month." https://electrek.co/2019/06/14/tesla-delivering-1000-cars-day-record-quarter/ HYUNDAI KONA EV #1 IN NETHERLANDS IN MAY "The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive month in May, with 2,688 plug-in vehicle registrations — up 193% year over year (YoY). That translated into a PEV share of 7.3% on the broader auto market. The year-to-date (YTD) count is now up to 15,537 units, with the 2019 PEV share at 8.3%, well above the 6% of last year." reports CleanTechnica: "If we only consider fully electric vehicles (BEVs), the EV share last month was 6.3%, with the 2019 share being 7%. A bit surprisingly, the VW e-Golf was 4th, with 227 units, a meritable performance for a model that is less than a year from being replaced by the much more competitive VW ID.3. I guess name recognition is a strong point here." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/14/hyundai-kona-ev-1-in-netherlands-in-may-tesla-model-3-still-1-in-2019/ RIVIAN'S USED BATTERIES WILL HELP SUPPORT "Now, we have an idea of what Rivian wants to do with its batteries once they're no longer usable in its vehicles." says Roadshow by CNET: "Rivian announced this week that it has teamed up with the Honnold Foundation, which funds solar power initiatives, for a future project that will use Rivian's "second-life" batteries, also known as a used EV battery that's already done its time in an electric vehicle. The project will see these batteries as gateways to energy independence and renewable power generation, and it'll kick off in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Using the 135-kilowatt-hour battery packs from its development vehicles, Rivian will take these batteries and move them into small modules that can collect power from solar panels or other sources, reducing reliance on the grid." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-used-batteries-energy-independence-project/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Tom Molougney for InsideEVs.com: "I was pleased to see Hyundai Kona Electric monthly production numbers raising significantly last fall, and eclipsing the 5,300-unit mark for both November and December of 2018. It was starting to look like Hyundai was going to really try to meet the global demand for this long-range, affordable small crossover. Then came 2019. Hyundai produced only 3,074 Kona Electrics in January and then a paltry 2,168 in February. Even if you combine production of those two months, they don’t add up to November or December’s production total. So, what gives?" https://insideevs.com/hyundai-reduce-kona-electric-production/ MORE FASTNED CHARGING STATIONS COMING TO UK "Dutch company Fastned has very ambitious goals to build a European network of 1,000 fast charging stations and is already approaching 10% of the plan, having 88 stations up and running." Says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "Most recently, Fastned won a second tender in the UK for 5 more charging stations, which will be included in the network." Fastned said: "Fastned will build and operate five fast charging stations (hubs) for electric vehicles across the region. Each station will initially house two 50 kW fast chargers (known as “rapid” chargers in the UK) that will deliver 100% renewable electricity." https://insideevs.com/more-fastned-charging-stations-coming-to-uk/ VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT GTE PLUG-IN HYBRID RETURNS WITH UPGRADES Volkswagen Passat GTE specs: 0 kWh battery (31% more energy than the previous generation – 9.9 kWh) up to 55 km (34 miles) of WLTP range; up to 70 km (43.5 miles) of NEDC range (20 km or 40% more than the previous generation) system output: 160 kW (218 PS) from 1.4 TSI gasoline turbocharged engine (110 kW / 150 PS) and 85 kW / 115 PS electric motor. 6 kW on-board charger (full recharge in around four hours) SECOND USE BATTERIES FOR AUDI "Factory tugs in Audi's Ingolstadt factory now sport the latest in second-hand lithium-ion batteries." Says Eric at Green Car Reports: "With automakers on the hook in jurisdictions around the world to take back and properly reuse or recycle all the batteries they install in electric cars, various automakers are experimenting with different ways to reuse the depleted batteries that come back from their old electric cars—from using them in new charging stations to selling them to wind farms, to installing them on the roofs of solar-powered apartment complexes. Now Audi is installing them on fork lifts and the tugs it uses to move parts around its main factory in Ingolstadt, Germany. Audi fits 24 of the e-tron's 36 battery modules into an identically sized tray to give the tugs and fork lifts up to perhaps between 30 and 50 kwh of battery capacity, depending on how much the cells degraded in their original cars. With charging hardware like that in a car, the tugs and fork lifts can be driven to a charging station in the factory and plugged in, saving countless man-hours on the factory line and clearing out space that the large, old lead-acid battery chargers consumed." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122092_audi-plans-to-put-old-ev-batteries-to-work-in-factory-tugs QUESTION OF THE WEEK DAVID FINCH “Fossil fuels are history. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 26th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Firstly, Sergio Marchionne has passed away following complications after shoulder surgery. The 66 year old had been admitted to Zurich University Hospital for a routine procedure but passed away on Wednesday morning. The tribute from EVO: “Marchionne joined Fiat in 2003 when the ailing Italian carmaker was on the verge of bankruptcy after posting a loss of €6 billion. Within two years he had turned the loss into a profit. In 2009 he orchestrated the deal to take control of the Chrysler, saving it from bankruptcy and giving Fiat and Alfa Romeo a foothold in the United States”. All our thoughts are with his family and friends. VARIETY OF KONA REVIEWS OFFER POSITIVE VERDICTS Occasionally you see a handful of publications all release a review of a car at the same time, often literally at midnight, as the press office embargo they agreed to adhere to in order to obtain the review is lifted. And so it was today with the Hyundai Kona EV, although in fairness I knew this one was coming, because the awesome Bjorn Nyland (who i love for his haphazard but incredibly in depth reviews) made a video saying it was coming. Bjorn posted almost two hours of video today on his YouTube channel. I do wish sometimes he's make a hot take edit, for those in a hurry, but please do have a look. Bjorn's channel is excellent for both its content and frequency of videos he's producing now. So after the reviews I'll talk about how to buy one, and some of the confusion we've had recently, with the online sales vs dealer sales. Plus an email from a listener to this show from someone who has one on order. Pocket-Lint: "The everyman's EV is a near-perfect crossover. The Kona looks like a future vehicle, just different enough from its petrol/diesel Kona cousins thanks to that closed front grille. It's comfortable too, with cushy seats that are both heated and cooled up front, ensuring temperature matching whatever the weather is outside. Electrically adjustable seats are a wink and a nod to this all-electric car's image, not to mention a feature usually reserved for premium options packs. There's adaptive cruise control with auto-braking, there's lane keep assist, blind spot warning, a reversing camera, and high beam assist. As the car can fully stop without using the brake pedal (the left paddle can be used as the fourth level, to control the brake, if you want), it's like a one pedal driving experience. Tom Ford for TopGear: "I drove this car for 200+ miles and it still said it had 125 miles left in it. Probably because we were in EV-charming conditions in Norway, but more likely because this car is tested against the newer Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) - calculated on real driving data. With the current virus-quality proliferation of charge points across the UK, this is starting to be one of those tipping point moments when excuses to dismiss the BEV get thin on the ground. Yes, there will inevitably be some getting used to be done, and horror stories about charge points being unavailable, but in reality this is a relatively cheap, eminently useable EV. My usage pattern consists of regular 200-mile roundtrips to airports (where leaving it on a charge point for a week is probably rude), and this car wouldn’t need a top-up. Eco mode shuts down the aircon, mutes the throttle response and seriously increases potential range, Sport does the opposite. This top-spec long range gets a head-up display, 7-inch ‘supervision cluster’, 8-inch LCD nav and cameras, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a bigger Krell audio system, power/heat/cool leather front seats and a heated steering wheel, LED headlamps and smart regenerative braking" And onto the subject of how to buy one. Click To Buy is available from 2nd August even though dealers had taken deposits. All orders will be reviewed equally. https://www.pocket-lint.com/cars/reviews/hyundai/145111-hyundai-kona-electric-review-suv-ev FORD FORMS A NEW COMPANY TO CONSOLIDATE SELF-DRIVING AND EV BUSINESSES Kyle Hyatt for CNET reports: "Ford just created a new subsidiary company called Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC which will house all of its self-driving car efforts including Ford's self-driving systems integration, autonomous vehicle research and advanced engineering, AV transportation-as-a-service network development, user experience, business strategy and business development teams." The new company will be helmed by Sherif Marakby, currently vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification for Ford. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-new-autonomous-self-driving-car-mobility-company/ MODEL 3 DELIVERY WINDOWS MOVING BACK "Tesla is now pushing back delivery windows on new orders for the Performance version and the rear-wheel-drive version of the new electric vehicle." writes Fred Lambert for Electrek: "Two weeks ago, Tesla cut those delivery windows down to just 1-3 months for the Performance version and the rear-wheel-drive Long Range battery pack version, according to a new update on their website. Now the company has updated its online design studio and Model 3 page with 2-4 months delivery windows for all versions of the vehicle" One of the comments from a User called 'Change' sums it up quite succinctly: "We know Tesla prioritise the delivery of their higher gross margin models so if they now despite of that cannot deliver them faster than the other versions of Model 3 I read this as evidence Tesla is selling a ton of the P3Ds which is good news with regard to Tesla getting profitable by Q3 or Q4. Also with 4 months as max delivery date and 20k production per month Tesla could have logged about 80,000 confirmed orders for Model 3." https://electrek.co/2018/07/24/tesla-model-3-delay-delivery-windows-new-orders/ ROADSIDE TECHNICIANS AND EMERGENCY SERVICES 'NEED' EV EDUCATION "The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) says it is vital that training and accreditation is extended to those dealing with electric vehicles (EVs) at the roadside" according to Fleet News: "Recent reports of a Tesla Model X, which caught fire after it had been recovered by emergency services, underline the need for industry-led accreditations and qualifications for roadside technicians and emergency services personnel working on EV and hybrid vehicles, it said. The IMI’s recommendations to implement a ‘Licence to Practise’ for those working on electric and hybrid vehicles now form part of the Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy. The IMI is urging roadside and emergency services to ensure their workforces are equally well prepared." NOMADS NEW WIRELESS CHARGERS "Nomads Tesla Model 3 Wireless Charger is a wireless charging pad that’s been specifically designed to plug into the USB ports beneath the centre console on a Model 3. So instead of dealing with wires and plugs, you’ll be able to place up to two phones down on the pad to charge while on the go." according to The Verge: "The Tesla Model 3 Wireless Charger offers two 7.5W coils (so you can fast wireless charge two iPhones at once). Cleverly, the Wireless Charger also features an integrated 6,000mAh battery that can store power when you’re not actively charging phones and allow the chargers to boost power output from 1A to 2A for speedier power delivery." https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/7/24/17605164/nomad-wireless-charger-tesla-model-3-upgrade-phone CHINESE EV START-UP DEARCC RAISES $294M PRE-A ROUND "Chinese electronic vehicle maker Dearcc (or Dianka in Chinese), announced that it has raised a RMB2 billion (US$294 million) pre-A round from undisclosed institutional investors, an automobile industrial fund and companies in the automobile supply chain." ENTERPRISE AND GREENWICH PARTNER FOR EV CAR CLUB "Greenwich council and car rental firm Enterprise have partnered to trial an electric car club in the borough." according to Air Quality News: " Car-sharing provider Enterprise will offer its members in Greenwich access to one of two Nissan Leaf fully electric cars located in the Neighbourhood, and a further five electric vehicles will soon become available at fixed charging bays" https://www.airqualitynews.com/2018/07/24/enterprise-and-greenwich-partner-for-ev-car-club/ COMMUNITY Post from Bill Pollack You can listen to all previous 191 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Tuesday 8th May 2018. TESLA REQUIRES ALL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE AN EMPLOYEE VOUCH FOR THEM Elon Musks recent email to staff said "“I have been disappointed to discover how many contractor companies are interwoven throughout Tesla,” Musk’s email read. “Often, it is like a Russian nesting doll of contractor, subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc. before you finally find someone doing actual work” Now according to Digital Trends: "Musk’s original email gave contractors a week in order to prove their worth to the company, but he has since extended that deadline. However, he is also requiring that contractors have an employee willing to vouch for them or else they will be denied access. Musk’s requirement that Tesla employees put their reputation on the line will likely make it very difficult for the majority of contractors to obtain recommendations. After all, his email seems to imply that if a contractor’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory then it could impact the job of the employee who vouched for it." The full email from Elon over the weekend and obtained by Electrek, reads: "Please send a note to HR before Monday justifying the excellence, necessity and trustworthiness by individual (not just the contractor company as a whole) of every non-Tesla person who has badge access to our buildings or network access to our systems. By default, anyone who does not have a Tesla employee putting their reputation on the line for them will be denied access to our facilities and networks on Monday morning. This applies worldwide. The "barnacles" are a reference to Tesla contractors, an analogy Musk first used publicly in the May 2 earnings call. Now Tesla employees are being asked to put their own careers on the line to justify any contractors they need." TESLA SOLAR ROOF PATENT REVEALS THE SCIENCE BEHIND ITS STUNNING DESIGN We love a bit of Solar chat, and on Inverse.com they've been talking about the Tesla Solar roof. Why does the Tesla Solar Roof look just like a normal roof? How do they not look like traditional panels? Inverse report: "One of the most fascinating aspects of Tesla’s solar roof, which started reaching homes earlier this year, is that it looks like an ordinary roof. The design hides advanced energy-harvesting cells wired to a home battery, and a new patent application published last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sheds light on how the company pulled off the technical feat." Inverse continues: "Louvers inside the tiles act like blinds in a window. The light hitting the roof from the sky passes through, but from the street level the louvers block the sight of the cells and make the tile appear smooth. TESLA REGISTERS 5,009 NEW MODEL 3 VINS AS TSLA RETAKES $50B MARKET CAP On Twitter, Matthew Koloski (@mattk926) said: "#Tesla registered 5009 new #Model3 VINs. Highest VIN is 39263.". Simon at Teslarati point out: “Interacting with members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Koloski noted that none of the new VINs represented dual-motor AWD variants of the Model 3. Over the course of the past few months, Tesla’s VIN registrations have been increasing in number. Exactly two weeks ago, Tesla registered 5,170 new Model 3 VINs — one of the largest batches yet. With this in mind, a production rate of 3,000-4,000 Model 3 per week is starting to seem feasible." MUSK BUYS $9.85 MILLION IN TESLA SHARES AFTER TAUNTING SHORTS Bloomberg have picked up: Elon Musk "bought about $9.85 million worth of Tesla shares on Monday, his biggest purchase since March 2017, according to a regulatory filing. Musk, 46, already was Tesla’s largest shareholder, with his stake now approaching 20 percent" He's also been taunting those betting against Tesla on Twitter saying: "“The sheer magnitude of short carnage will be unreal. If you’re short, I suggest tiptoeing quietly to the exit." FUTURE PROOFING THE OPEL BRAND IN AN ELECTRIC FUTURE Sarah Timmermans, the CEO of Opel Belgium, has been talking about the future of Opel now it's owned by PSA Groupe. In a conversation with Fleet Europe she outlined the challenges electric cars will bring: "We have announced to all our dealers across Europe that we need to change our way to market, that both we and our dealers need to adapt to the changing customer behaviour, and to the changing landscape – disruptions such as electric vehicles. We have clearly indicated that we are entirely technology-neutral. Everybody knows that we need to come down to 95 grams of CO2 emitted per km by 2020, and this is going to require a mix of powertrains. So we are working on electric vehicles, hybrids, hydrogen, along with petrol and diesel in their most ecological versions. Opel/Vauxhall will have 4 electrified car lines on the market by 2020, including the Grandland X PHEV and the next generation Corsa that will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. On top of this, every new passenger car line in Europe will get an electrified option – offering a BEV or a hybrid version alongside efficient internal combustion engine." BATTERY SHORTAGE INTERRUPTS HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC SALES Orders for the Ioniq Electric in Canada are currently on hold due to a global shortage of battery supply. A leaked memo to Hyundai dealers titled "18My Ioniq EV Short-Term Production Shortage" said: ""Due to a temporary global battery supply shortage, the sold order entry system for 18MY Ioniq EV will be closed effective immediately. The 19MY Ioniq EV will be opened at the same time to allow for pre-sale of 19My Ioniq EV, with deliveries beginning in July." According to Green Car Reports; "All this comes just before Hyundai is scheduled to release a long-range version of the Ioniq Electric with a bigger battery, slated to go 200 miles or more on a charge. The current Ioniq Electric comes with a single battery size with a rated range of 124 miles. Further, the Hyundai Motor America spokesman allowed that the battery shortage may affect production of Hyundai's upcoming Kona Electric, which is expected to go on sale toward the end of this year with a 64-kwh battery pack rated at 238 miles of range." WHOLE FOODS BEGINS INSTALLING EV CHARGERS AT STORES "Whole Foods has announced a partnership with electric vehicle charging company Blink to begin installing the EV charge points at its US stores" starting with three stores in Pennsylvania say Autoguide: "Blink charging stations can be located using the company’s smartphone app. The app can also relay information on the charge point’s status thanks to Blink’s cloud-based network. The charging stations are now open at Whole Foods’ locations in Lancaster, Spring House and Exton, Pennsylvania." NEW BATTERY LAYOUT AND MOTOR COMPONENTS IN HYUNDAI / KIA ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Something I found on the Hyundai IONIQ forum, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro are similar but different. "These two cars have the same battery capacity, the same battery pack case, the same motor and electronics. But it seems the two cars have very different battery cells. The Kona EV has NCM622 cells from LG Chem that are optimized more for power density. The Niro EV has NCM811 cells from SK Innovation that are optimized more for energy density. The Niro EV is more of a family car - bigger more comfortable - but the acceleration output through the battery management system (BMS) control is relatively low. The Kona EV cells however allow higher-powered driving. Its body is also smaller, and its agility excellent, which is an advantage for sports driving. In the end, it is analysed that Niro EV is beneficial to achieve stable driving performance and Kona EV has advantages in higher-powered driving." Wednesday 28th February 2018. Coming up today we’ll talk about making electric cars louder, and Hyundai’s Kona Electric… DIESEL? NEIN DANKE! …but first, I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that a decision made in Germany today could be a landmark day in the history of how quickly we electrify our transport. Not only is Germany the home of diesel sales, where until recently every other car purchased was a diesel, but it’s home to the world’s largest diesel manufacturers and the companies which supply them. Diesel sales in many countries are already falling off a cliff, without electric cars selling enough to make up the difference, causing huge headaches for the investments in factories, tooling and staff to make the millions of diesel engines which buyers no longer want. But having said that, today’s decision by Germany’s Federal Administrative Court did not directly involve German car makers, it was an environmental group called Environmental Action Germany versus the cities of Stuttgart and Dusseldorf. There was an initial court ruling which recognised that pollution levels in those cities was far too high, and that banning cars was the most effective way to improve air quality. It’s because of this ruling that those two local states appealed. However that appeal was dismissed, with Presiding Judge Andreas Korbmacher saying: “Bans are generally permissible and can be implemented”. So it came down to a question about what is more important: car owners or public health. The European commission reports that 400,000 people die prematurely annually due to air pollution, and the European Union are taking steps to force areas which exceed the agreed limits to take action. Although this is a battle over the levels of Nitrogen Dioxide, it doesn’t reflect well for either Germany or its main car makers, as both opposed any form of ban. Germany’s Volkswagen is already recovering from a period of extremely bad publicity from Dieselgate, and a recent story about emissions tests on animals, by investing heavily into electric cars and their supply chains. However any kind of resistance to clean up our air portrays car makers as anti-environment, with evidence of nitrogen dioxide causing respiratory disease and premature death, So what’s at stake, and what changes? Initially nothing. To be clear, all this does it provides a legal background from which German municipalities can, and must, form policy to tackle pollution levels. And the quickest way to do that is with bans, which they are now allowed to do. On a practical level, driving into city centres could become more difficult as bans will be enforced on days when pollution is high. Residual values of diesels are already under pressure too. That affects the finance arms of car makers which lease cars, or offer purchase plans, whose businesses are based on predicted residuals. Potentially, some people are calling for those older diesels to be upgraded or retro fitted, with that expense being borne by the auto makers. How do you even start to put a plan together which identifies which cars are to be banned? How do you choose the days when they’ll not be allowed to run? How to do you enforce it? Some ideas today included special coloured licence plates or discs which show you have a diesel, but how will you know if you can drive it today? That brings us back to EV’s. There is an inevitable snowball effect – and pardon the pun if you’re listening in parts of Europe where we’re fighting off extremely cold weather. This decision could embolden other countries and cities to implement their own bans without fear of negative publicity or backlash. Anecdotally, the reaction is that diesel is being banned. Watching the comments come in on twitter over the last few hours, there’s a general perception that diesels cars are being completely banned. Secondly much reaction today could have quite easily said that diesels were being banned so buy a petrol, but people are assuming that means the only answer is to buy an electric car. Is this has happened 24 months ago, I think the reaction would have been much more negative. However with so many great electric cars on the market, I’ve seen newspaper articles saying diesel will be banned so what’s the alternative? A new Nissan LEAF. Chevvy Bolt. A long range Renault Zoe ZE40. The Model S and X. New Golf eGolf or eUp. Hyundai Ioniq. BMW i3. Kia Soul. None of these are quirky compliance cars they’re usable, mostly affordable, daily drivers. That’s before they start talking about the cars coming soon like the I-PACE, Model 3, e-Tron and so many more. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-43211946 http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/27/news/germany-diesel-cars-ban-court-ruling-cities/index.html https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-27/german-court-refuses-to-overturn-diesel-car-bans-in-two-cities http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5440059/amp/German-cities-impose-driving-bans-diesel-cars-combat-pollution.html http://www.dw.com/en/german-court-allows-city-ban-on-diesel-cars/a-42753227 ALL-NEW KONA ELECTRIC And that leads me nicely onto talking about another new electric car, the Hyundai electric Kona SUV. Revealed today in a funky Youtube presentation, and I’ve put a link to it in the podcast description and the blog, we got all the details. There are two batteries and powertrains – a smaller 39.2kWh / 99kW motor combination, or a more powerful 64kWh / 150kW combo. According to the new WLTP standards it’s good for 300km or 470km, with the more upgraded spec getting you a 0-62mph time of 7.6 seconds. That’s rapid enough for any normal driving. This is what they call a compact SUV, at 2.6 metres long it’s still small enough for European city driving. Oh and the charger port is at the front which makes it, according to a phrase used by electrive which I love, a ‘nose charger’. Other notable highlights from the Youtube presentation are a lack of gear stick, it’s just small set of buttons for drive, park or reverse. And it looks like the same paddle operated regeneration selection as we’ve seen elsewhere. https://www.hyundai.news/eu/press-kits/all-new-hyundai-kona-electric-a-car-of-no-compromise/ https://www.electrive.com/2018/02/27/hyundai-presents-electric-suv-kona-electric/ IT’S OH SO QUIET The US Department of Transportation has made it’s mind up on quiet cars, and the deadline is now 2020 for EVs and hybrids to emit a warning sound to pedestrians. The speed limit will be 18.6mph, and anything below this will require some sort of sound to persuade people not to step out in front of you whilst they’re staring at their mobile phones. So the big question is whether you’ll be given the choice of what sounds to play, or whether a single sound will be agreed upon for all electric cars to have. Also, will you be able to turn it off, or will your EV always sounds like a truck reversing when you’re moving it around your driveway? Let’s hope it’s optional, and down to drivers to ensure it’s on whist you’ve on public roads. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/02/26/ev-hybrid-quiet-cars-sounds-rule/ BMW iX3 SHOWING OFF IN THE SNOW Finally the BMW iX3 has been seen again, testing in the snow, minus any camouflage. And autoevolution.com are starting to wonder if they’re doing it on purpose now just to get us talking. Because if so…it’s working! This time the spy shots clearly show a charge port and there are no fake tailpipes added. It’s looking the same as a regular X3 otherwise. In terms of size it’s in the same ball park as the Hyundai Kona we talked about earlier, but it’s in the more premium pricing of the Mercedes-Benz EQC, which is their equivalent. Both BMW and Mercedes look like they’ll be on sale, or at least fully revealed in 2019 as a 2020 model year. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/spyshots-2020-bmw-ix3-electric-crossover-is-out-for-mercedes-benz-eqc-blood-123898.html Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
