Join us for another fun episode with Eric & Todd at The Hideaway Tavern ($4 dirty burgers on Wednesdays). In this episode, we discuss how different LeMay Collections at Marymount and LeMay-America's Car Museum are from each other, but they are symbiotic in a way that will surprise visitors to both. It is a bit of a continuation of our previous episode as we share great stories of cars in both collections that hold fond memories for both of us. Then, the comparison devolves into Eric classifying LeMay Collections at Marymount as an “orgy of the senses.” (Hey Eric, this is a family show…let's call Marymount what it is…a “collection of collections.”) (ERIC'S NOTE: I think "orgy of the senses" is one of the greatest phrases ever uttered on early 1991-era international live broadcasting. The entire thing deserves a short documentary. It was big on a lot of levels. But I never thought of it as a "blue" question. In fact, I might have been the last person who realized what I was saying. Terry Anderson had such a great answer...) (TODD'S NOTE: Good excuse, Eric. Isn't he funny?)

It Takes Work To Be LuckyCharlie Maxwell, a confidant and longtime employee of Harold Lemay, at a Lakewood Historical Society event, narrated tales of the man behind the Pierce County Refuse Company. From a single garbage truck in 1942, Lemay's empire swelled, becoming Washington's largest trash removal service and the 10th largest nationally. Yet, it was his fixation on vintage cars that brought Harold LeMay true fame.Like a vine reaching for sunlight, his car collection burgeoned to over 3,000 vehicles, crowning him in the Guinness Book of World Records as the possessor of the largest privately owned automobile collection. When Harold passed in 2000, his wife Nancy and son Doug continued the family business and preserved the car collection while maintaining their annual August open house tradition – an event held at their, as Harold was called it, a three-story home with a 300-car garage. In 2008, Waste Connections Incorporated bought Pierce County Refuse. Two years later, the Lemay Family Collection Foundation emerged as a non-profit corporation, welcoming visitors to explore its treasures at the former Marymount Military Academy in Spanaway. In June 2012, America's Car Museum sprouted in downtown Tacoma beside the iconic Tacoma Dome.Harold E. LeMay's love for automobiles transcended all boundaries, capturing stories from countless individuals at his annual car show. His passion propelled him to purchase cars for their historical and cultural significance rather than as investments. He once remarked, "I don't go for just the dollar value of a car. If it's unusual, I like it." Dubbed "Lucky" in his youth, Harold adhered to his mantra: "It takes a lot of hard work to be lucky." And luck indeed followed him as he amassed an unparalleled collection.Lucky's Garage stands as a tribute to Harold E. LeMay – an enduring exhibit at America's Car Museum. Meanwhile, the LeMay Family Collection at the Marymount Event Center continues to showcase over 500 vintage vehicles, primarily American-made cars, trucks, buses, fire engines, and motorcycles. This ever-growing collection, which began with Harold and Nancy LeMay, remains an emblem of their enduring legacy.Unfortunately, Harold passed away on this day in 2000.www.nodrivinggloves.com#cars #car #collectorcars #oldcars #cartalk #electriccars #ev #hotrod #carhistory #automotivehistory #automobile #thisdayinautomotivehistory #thisdayinhistory #classiccars #napodpomo ##americascarmuseum #lemaycollection

Gunther Buerman and his Maggie Buerman opened the Newport Car Museum in 2017 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. They've constantly updated the combined automobile and history museum including its latest presentation — an homage to Porsche. Gunther Buerman, whose interest in automobiles began as a young boy when practiced wax paper transfer etchings of car advertisements from National Geographic Magazine, is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. A repeat guest who was willed a 1966 Ford Mustang nearly 40 years ago, Buerman owns dozens of vehicles, none any more important than his collection of the German sports cars of his early youth. The Newport Car Museum has a new permanent display of Porsches. He moved to New York as a young boy with his family where Buerman eventually became an attorney. He's the former chairman of Harris Beach, LLC, a major New York law firm. From his early life fondness for cars, Buerman and his wife, who live in Highland Beach, Florida and Newport, R.I., have established the largest auto museum on the East Coast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I interview the car collector and avid sailor about his nearly lifelong interest in cars, notably the expansive collection of prized Porsches at the Newport Car Museum Starting with a 1956 Porsche 356a Speedster, the Museum's collection includes every Speedster developed to date. The Speedster was redesigned in 1989, '94, 2011 and for a final time in 2019. After the 356 came a legend among modern automobiles, the Porsche 911. Ahead of its time when introduced in 1964, the rear-engine 911 evolved over three decades when Porsche introduced a new 911 Carrera in 1999. Among the Museum's 911s are a 1979 930 Turbo, a 2016 Targa 4S and three GTs – the 2011 GT3 RS 4.0, 2016 GT3 RS, and 2018 GT2 RS Weissach – the latter representing the highest-powered (700 hp), dual-track-and-road cars of their vintage. The museum's 2005 Carrera GT is one of the last real supercars with manual transmission: a naturally aspirated 10-cylinder "monster." Finally, the 2015 918 in the collection is forever relevant as one in the trifecta of current hypercars. The McLaren P1 and Ferrari La Ferrari are the also in the prized threesome. The vehicles in the Newport Auto Museum are complemented by mid-20th Center Modern furnishings of renowned international designers and automotive artworks by Los Angeles-based artist David Lloyd Glover. Welcome to Dwarf Car Museum! Ernie Adams, originator of the dwarf car, has made a name for himself building Dwarf Race Cars and scaled down replicas of classic cars called Dwarf Car Cruisers. These handmade works of art now have a home in Maricopa, Arizona. Early Years: Ernie Adams had a fascination with cars starting back in grade school. He would admire the cars of the time, drew them for school assignments and even built a wooden car as long as a crate box with steering and peanut butter jar lids for taillights. His mother would pull him through out his hometown of Harvard, Nebraska. First Dwarf Car: The first Dwarf Car came to life in 1965 as a 28 Chevy two-door sedan made out of nine old refrigerators. Ernie began gathering the materials for this little car in 1962. By 1965 he had enough materials and an 18 hp Wisconsin motor to begin construction. With a homemade hacksaw made from a chair frame, hammer and a chisel, Ernie began construction. He had no idea what this would be the beginning of. Because this is the first Dwarf Car ever built, it is known as “GRANDPA DWARF.” This first Dwarf Car is kept in running order and is still driven today. Dwarf Race Car: The first two Dwarf Race Cars were built in Dec. 1979 and early 1980. The Dwarf Race Car idea came about after Ernie Adams and Daren Schmaltz had attended motorcycle side hack races in Phoenix, Arizona. During the drive home, Ernie expressed concern that three-wheeled racers were to slow in the corners. He said they could improve considerably by adding a fourth wheel to help thru the corners. Ernie suggested that adding a car body would also help spectator appeal. The first Dwarf Car race took place at the Yavapai County Fair in Prescott, Arizona in September, 1983. There were 12 cars registered. Dwarf Car Cruiser: After leaving the Dwarf Race Cars, Ernie had learned a lot about bending and shaping metal. He loved to see heads turn in admiration of the Dwarf Race Cars while being towed down the highway. Ernie knew it was time to change and put his metal shaping skills to the test. Now he wanted a fully dressed Dwarf Car with fenders, chrome, finished interior and most of all street legal and the Dwarf Car Cruiser was born. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/support

Today's Destination is: Fort Myers, Florida Today's Mistake- I Couldn't sleep Travel Advice:  Pack an extra toothbrush FAQ: What are the best and easiest snacks to bring on a trip? Answer: My favorite snack food is nuts, mixed with a trail type snack that's packed in small baggies by me. I buy larger sizes and transfer them to the size that I need for my trips. I mix it up a bit, with the ingredients, such as berries, coconut, seeds and other non-salty flavors. If I am craving salty snacks, I like the idea of edamame or popcorn. Even cheese can help me with satisfying this craving. The only other favorite is fruit, but most of the time this will need to be chilled.   https://www.today.com/health/9-cheap-healthy-snacks-when-you-re-craving-something-salty-t192259 Today's destination: Fort Myers, Florida Fort Myers is a fast growing coastal city in and the county seat and commercial center of Lee County. The population has been growing from about 62,000 in 2010 to about 90,000 in 2020. I was heading to Florida for a trip and got some good advice on this destination from a friend's cousin, Beth Ann. There is so much going on here. I have to thank my friend Jo Balsamo Wood for her help in navigating my solo trip. In Fort Myers, visit Manatee State Park, Edison-Ford Winter Estates,  https://www.edisonfordwinterestates.org/ For lunch or dinner, visit the Mucky Duck restaurant on Sanibel Island, which is right by the beach.  Check out the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel, the Lighthouse on Lighthouse Beach on Sanibel. You can even take a sunset boat cruise from Fort Myers Beach and see the dolphins. There is also Koreshan State Park worth visiting, located on U.S. Highway 41 at Corkscrew Road. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places . Beth Ann likes kayaking or canoeing, there's the Estero River or further south at Clam Pass.  She recommends parasailing on Fort Myers Beach—lots of fun! Just south in Naples are the Naples Botanical Gardens-very lovely! A bit outside of the city, you will find these. Tampa: e bor   Ybor City, The Florida Aquarium, Henry Plant Museum on campus of U. Of Tampa St Petersburg: The Salvador Dali Museum  Sarasota: The Ringling Museum, and next to that The Car Museum, The Mote Aquarium, Selby Gardens, which was having a special exhibit on art. North Port is on the way to Fort Myers: Warm Mineral Springs, said to have healing powers! There are signs off I-75 directing you there. May you have a great visit to the Fort Myers area as a destination. Today's Mistake- I Couldn't sleep I could not fall asleep and I  just lay there awake, which was not a good plan. I spent most of the night worrying about not sleeping, which was also making things worse. If that happens to you, don't be like me. Instead, do one of the following: pray for peace and comfort, breathe deeply and quietly with eyes closed and rest every part of your body. If those don't work, try taking a hot bath or shower and that may be what needs to happen for the sleep to arrive.   Today's Travel Advice-Pack an extra toothbrush   Taking care of your oral hygiene is a long term project and every day you think of your teeth as precious gems, you will prolong their life. Pack an extra toothbrush and some extra floss and picks. You never know when you'll be away from the comfort of running water for best tooth care. So bring this with you and you will be glad you did. Your dentist will notice your big smile when you make your next visit.   Today I want to bring meaning to your travels. Send me your travel tip.
