RAC RECOMMENDS DITCHING FUEL DUTY CUTThe RAC, who have long been highlighting how fuel retailers are not passing on the fuel duty cut to consumers, have recommended to the Government that they remove this in the upcoming Budget. Their argument is that drivers are not seeing the benefit and companies are only lining their pockets. To read more on this, click the link here to a BBC News article. HACKNEY PROPOSAL FOR MOTORCYCLE PARKING CHALLENGED A legal challenge has been filled against Hackney Council after their proposal to impose a parking fee at the same rate as a car, for residents. The council expects the move to reduce motorcycle commuting by 70%, in the face of evidence that it is better to shift from a car to a motorcycle. To help this challenge succeed a crowdfunding campaign is in operation. Click this link to a Motorcycle Action Group page for more. HYUNDAI UPDATES MODEL PLANSHyundai is the latest company to announce a revision to their model and powertrain plans, in the face of market conditions. They will expand their hybrid offerings, including adding a range-extender. These moves, it hopes, will counter the fears that markets have about making the switch to fully electric vehicles. LOTUS SLASHES SALES FORECASTLotus, blaming tariffs on Chinese built EVs, has slashed its sales forecast from 55,000 vehicles to just 12,000. With next year being down from 76,000 to 30,000. In the first half of 2024 Lotus sold 4873 cars globally. Whilst this is a record, it is no where near where it needed to be if 55,000 were to be sold. HMRC CUTS EV MILEAGE RATESHMRC has announced that they are cutting the Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRs) for EVs, reducing it to 7ppm, from 8ppm. There are, as a result, calls to change how this is done because it does not actually cover the costs of business users, especially if they do not have a home charger. LEX AUTOLEASE PROFITS PLUNGE £400MLex Autolease, the business leasing company, has announced a drop in pre-tax profits of £400 million, in the face of increased revenues. A large portion of this is attributed to the fall in EV residuals at rates far more than anticipated. As we have said on the show, there are consequences which will impact both new and second hand markets. Click...
Vamos a verlo.

One of them could be the next-generation C3 - In addition, the already revealed plug-in hybrid version of the Citroën C5X is also listed. - Previous reports mentioned a Dodge PHEV launching in 2022 with underpinnings shared with the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The model is expected to be a rebadged Tonale called the Hornet - Fiat has only one, a to-be-announced all-electric model; many are hoping it will be the next-generation Panda EV - As for the Jeep brand, the roadmap includes the already unveiled Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid launching this year and a mystery battery electric model expected to arrive in 2023. - Alfa Romeo CEO recently said the Brennero EV will launch in 2024, which means its Jeep equivalent will launch the year before judging by this product roadmap. - Maserati will launch two BEVs in 2022–2023: the GranTurismo/GranCabrio replacements and Grecale SUV. - On the Opel/Vauxhall front, the all-new Astra hatchback and wagon will get plug-in hybrid and battery electric variants, with the same thing in store for the latest Peugeot 308. - Ram will launch an all-electric ProMaster in 2023 to rival the Ford E-Transit and GM's BrightDrop vans. Original Source : http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php DUKE MAY OFFER SOME EV CUSTOMERS 'ALL YOU CAN CHARGE' FOR JUST $19.99/MONTH - Duke Energy has proposed an electric vehicle (EV) charging program that could allow some residential customers in North Carolina to charge a vehicle for a fixed monthly fee as low as $19.99. In exchange, the customer would allow Duke to manage the vehicle's charging, in order to avoid grid stress and higher costs. - Customers who consume more than 800 kWh for charging in a month, or opt out of several managed charging events during which charging may be paused, could receive warnings and be removed from the pilot. According to Duke, that amount of energy will get a typical EV close to 2,000 miles of range. But clean energy advocates say the program limits are an indication that subscription-based managed charging plans may not work for all customers. - Unmanaged EV charging that occurs during or near the coincident peak could mean Duke "will need to build or obtain additional capacity resources to avoid power interruptions or damage to the system," the utility said. "This could result in increased costs for all customers." On the other hand, if EV charging is managed effectively Duke said it will be able to "delay or avoid adding additional capacity resources" and reduce costs in both the short- and long-term. System assets will also be used more efficiently, "and these savings will be shared among both EV drivers and non-EV drivers." As a more affordable model below the LiveWire One, the Del Mar is to be based on a new platform called Arrow, which has a special technical feature. - Until now, the battery has been built into the frame, which is the only load-bearing component, but this classic frame is omitted in the Arrow platform. Instead of being attached to the frame, the swingarm is attached to the side engine mounts, and the suspension strut is supported on the battery block again by means of a deflection. - The new arrangement saves weight and can reduce costs but also requires a completely new design of the battery housing, as this not only protects the cells in the event of an accident but now also has to absorb other forces during the ride – such as from the suspension strut. - The battery of the Arrow platform will use round cells in the 2170 format. Depending on the model, Harley will connect these standard cells differently in order to realise voltage levels between 50 and 400 volts. As much as 90% of those will be fueled by gasoline instead of climate-friendly battery power, according to the plan. - The agency said its plan "is the most achievable given the Postal Service's financial condition," because, it said, the battery-electric option has a significantly higher total cost of ownership than its combustion-engine counterpart. However, environmentalists and energy analysts have disputed the assertion. - Environmental groups are preparing to immediately challenge the move in federal court, arguing the Postal Service is illegally justifying its move with a fundamentally flawed analysis of the purchase plan that underestimates greenhouse gas emissions, relies on faulty economic assumptions and fails to consider alternatives. - Although the Biden administration has limited authority over the Postal Service because it is an independent agency, federal courts have found the USPS is still bound by the National Environmental Policy Act that requires analysis of major policy decisions. And federal courts have previously invalidated government leases sold to private companies after finding that analysis lacking. SK INNOVATION TO INVEST $1 BLN IN A NEW BATTERY FACTORY IN CHINA - South Korea's SK Innovation Co Ltd (096770.KS) said on Wednesday it will invest 1.2 trillion won ($1.04 billion) in a new battery factory in China. - The South Korean battery maker, which supplies electric car batteries to Ford Motor Co (F.N), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) among others, has battery production sites in the United States, Hungary, China and South Korea. - In July, SK Innovation said it would aim to increase its annual battery production capacity to 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2025 Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/sk-innovation-invest-1-bln-new-battery-factory-china-2021-09-01/ PREPRODUCTION KIA EV6 DRIVEN - The interior is cool. There's a wide screen on the dash, which itself is adorned with stylish gray and white lines that continue on the center console lid. The shifter is a rotary dial with “park” at its vertex and “R, N and D” positioned just outside its circumference. A power button sits slightly elevated ahead of the shifter, while a wireless charging pad is located behind. - There are two 12-volt power outlets on that lower deck, and a USB and USB-C just ahead below the center stack: - The EV6's ride quality is a bit on the stiffer side, though not harsh. - That's reasonably quick, though in an EV without sound or shifts, that sprint is a gradual affair and not something that will blow you away (a 576 horsepower Kia EV6 GT model is on the horizon). - Even if it's clearly not a sports car, I had a good time zipping the EV6 around those twisty streets in the countryside north of Frankfurt, though to me, what makes the car special isn't its handling or its power, it's its design. The outside is quirky and fun, and the cabin is just a cool place to spend time. The manufacturer has now announced this at the official presentation of the sixth generation of the model. Before the launch as a BEV, plug-in hybrids in two performance levels are available for the new Astra. - The new Astra will also be launched as a purely battery-electric car. - The DS 4 and the Astra not only share the EMP2 as their technical basis, but they are also both built at Opel's Rüsselsheim plant. - The existing BEV models based on the EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform) are the large vans or transporters, such as the Citroën ë-Spacetourer or the Opel models Zafira-e Life (passenger cars) or Vivaro-e (commercial vehicles). - Astra will be available to order from autumn and will be delivered from the beginning of 2022 – initially as a “sporty five-door model”. An “elegant estate version” with the familiar name Astra Sports Tourer is to follow “shortly”. EV battery support is particularly critical as the battery pack itself can comprise as much as 40% of the vehicle's cost - Cox said it would use the diagnostic tool to push greater confidence in electric vehicles, likening it to the way that Kelley Blue Book has provided greater transparency about ICE vehicles' condition for consumers. PSA GROUP TO LAUNCH NEW ELECTRIC PLATFORM FOR LARGER VEHICLES "The PSA Group has revealed plans for a new electrified eVMP platform that will underpin its larger vehicles from 2020 onwards as it moves towards a fully electrified line-up." writes Autocar: "The French giant, whose brands include Citroën, DS, Peugeot and Opel/Vauxhall, currently uses two ‘multi-energy’ platforms: CMP and EMP2. The CMP architecture, for small vehicles, can utilise combustion engined and electric powertrains, while the EMP2 is designed for ICE-only and plug-in hybrid systems. It's designed for electric vehicles with a range of between 248 and 404 miles, depending on the body, thanks to "60-100kWh of embedded energy" within the wheelbase. PSA says that the platform can also support hybrid powertrains, which will be “offered on certain markets” where needs must. According to PSA, key to the efficiency of the eEVMP platform is the optimisation of development and industrialisation costs. It says the eVMP has been developed with “extended carry-over” from the EMP2 platform and can be made on existing plants and production lines to limit investment." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/psa-group-launch-new-electric-platform-larger-vehicles TOYOTA TO TAKE 10% STAKE IN ELECTRIC DRIVE MAKER BLUE NEXUS; NEW JOINT SALES STRUCTURE "BluE Nexus Corporation (earlier post) and Toyota Motor Corporation will collaborate to prepare for the accelerated adoption of electrified vehicles by working together to increase their competitiveness in products related to electrification as well as to fortify their sales structure, including their technical support and services, among others, rendered to their customers. Additionally, Toyota will take a 10% stake in BluE Nexus to achieve this goal." reports Green Car Congress: " As they look toward the accelerated adoption of electrified vehicles, BluE Nexus and Toyota aim to join forces and use their core competencies—i.e., Toyota’s control calibration technologies for engines, batteries, and other major peripheral components as well as BluE Nexus’s well-developed lineup of electric drive modules—to respond to requests from all types of customers around the world." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/07/20200731-bluenexus.html AMAZON BUILDING MAJOR EV CHARGING PARK IN GERMANY "The e-co mmerce giant Amazon has announced its largest deployment of electric mobility in Germany to date. The distribution center in Essen has been equipped with 340 charging stations and operates more than 150 electric delivery vehicles every day." says electrive: "Currently, eight of eleven delivery partners in Essen have converted their fleets to electric transporters, Amazon reports. A total of 150 electric vans are on the road in Essen. In addition, two other delivery partners in the Bochum distribution centre operate 40 electric vehicles. In January, Amazon announced that 60 charging points had been installed in the Munich-Daglfing distribution centre – a big news at the time, but compared to Essen, the Munich solution appears in a different light. While 40 StreetScooters and ten Mercedes eVito are used in Bavaria, Amazon does not mention in the current announcement which models will be used in Essen." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/31/amazon-building-major-ev-charging-park-in-germany/ FRENCH START-UP EMERGES FROM STEALTH MODE WITH PLAN TO BUILD HUGE BATTERY GIGAFACTORY BY 2023 "A French start-up has been launched with plans to build a 16GWh lithium-ion battery gigafactory in France by 2023 to help Europe meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage." according to Rechargenews.com: "After a year of behind-the-scenes work, Verkor — backed by French digital solutions company Schneider Electric, EU innovation fund EIT InnoEnergy and French real estate giant Groupe IDEC — has emerged from stealth mode with plans to complete the low-carbon 16GWh facility at a yet-to-be-decided location in France in 2023, before expanding it to 50GWh at a later date. Another new European battery start-up, Automative Cell Company (ACC) — a joint venture between Total-owned battery maker Saft and vehicle giant PSA Group, which owns Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and Vauxhall — plans to build an 8GWh gigafactory in northern France by 2023, and then a second 8GWh gigafactory in southwest Germany." https://www.rechargenews.com/technology/french-start-up-emerges-from-stealth-mode-with-plan-to-build-huge-battery-gigafactory-by-2023 UK OFFSHORE WIND MAY SOON BE SUBSIDY-FREE "Researchers at Imperial College in London conducted an exhaustive review of all European offshore wind installations since 2006 and concluded that offshore wind may soon be so cheap that newer installations will generate electricity at below wholesale prices, meaning government subsidies will no longer be required. In fact, by mid-century, those wind farms may actually be paying dividends that lower the cost of electricity for everyone. Even better, the industry will create tens of thousands of new jobs." says CleanTechnica: "What will make the next generation of offshore wind so inexpensive? The massive size of the turbines, many of which will have a blade diameter of 220 meters (that’s 722 feet for our US readers. To put that in context, the wingspan of a 747 is a mere 224 feet.) Larger turbines can harness more wind energy and have access to more consistent wind speeds at higher altitudes, making their production of electricity more predictable and reliable. According to The Independent, the newest wind farm at Dogger Bank in the North Sea has the same installed capacity as the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant and is expected to produce about two-thirds of its annual electricity. It will also cost massively less money than the ill-considered Hinkley Point nuke." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/30/uk-offshore-wind-may-soon-be-subsidy-free/ You can listen to all 854 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. UK MODEL 3 DELIVERIES New Patreon PRODUCER IAN TURNER: "Great work - have been listening for the last 6-8months. I'm one of the lucky (dozen?) to pick up their model 3 Performance Plus from West Drayton this coming Thursday. Since there will probably be 4,000-5,000 picking up their model3's over the next few months I decided to create a UK RHD Model 3 "Delivery Checklist" . This is based on the US equivalent so I'm not taking all of the glory here!" NEW RENAULT ZOE Highights of the new Zoe and your comments. TESLA DISCONTINUES LONG RANGE REAR-WHEEL DRIVE MODEL 3 "One of the latest change in the constantly changing Tesla offer is reportedly the discontinuation of the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version of the Model 3." says InsideEVs: "The Long-Range RWD was the first version of the Model 3, introduced in mid-2017. In recent months, Tesla removed the LR RWD and Standard Range RWD from the online design studio, offering the two only through direct call or a visit in the store. Now, it seems that LR RWD Model 3 will not be available anymore - at least temporarily - probably to simplify the production process." https://insideevs.com/news/355122/tesla-discontinued-long-range-rwd-model-3/ VOLKSWAGEN WILL GUARANTEE THE CAPACITY OF THE ID. BATTERIES FOR EIGHT YEARS OR 160,000 KM Volkswagen will launch production of the ID.3 before the year is out. The compact-class model is the first member of the ID. family – a new generation of progressive electric vehicles whose lithium-ion batteries will allow for a range of up to 550 kilometres (342 miles), making the models perfect for comfortable long journeys. The future owners of ID. models won’t need to worry about the durability of their batteries either, as Volkswagen will guarantee that the batteries will retain at least 70 per cent of their usable capacity even after eight years or 160,000 kilometres (100,000 miles). VOLKSWAGEN CONFIRMS SALES OF E-GOLF IN CANADA IN 2020 "Relatively low availability of heVolkswagen e-Golf in Canada prompted some doubt over the future of the only all-electric VW in 2020." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "According to the latest news, Volkswagen confirmed that the e-Golf will be available in 2020, which is reasonable, especially since the Volkswagen ID.3 is not coming to North America, and the CROZZ version will follow probably from 2021 on." https://insideevs.com/news/354954/volkswagen-confirmed-sales-e-golf-canada-2020/ NISSAN E-NV200 SALES SOAR UK sales of the fully electric Nissan e-NV200 have increased by 200% in 2019 as small business leaders look to increase fleet efficiency and reduce costs, amid changing emissions legislation and the introduction of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone. The surging demand echoes the results of a recent Nissan survey, showing that 24% of UK small businesses expect van fleets to be fully electric within a decade. PSA GROUP TO PRODUCE BATTERY PACKS IN SLOVAKIA "PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel/Vauxhall) is the latest carmaker that decided to produce battery modules/packs for hybrid/plug-in electric vehicles in Eastern Europe." reports InsideEVs: "According to Reuters, PSA selected Slovakia's plant in Trnava, which will later be supplemented by a plant in Vigo, Spain. Currently, there is no details about volume and models." https://insideevs.com/news/354972/psa-group-to-produce-battery-packs-in-slovakia/ LONDON LOOKS TO INSTALL AS MANY AS 50,000+ EV CHARGE POINTS BY 2025 "London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled an updated electric vehicle infrastructure delivery plan which aims to put as many as 50,000 EV charge points in the city by 2025, as London looks to become a zero emission transport city by 2030." writes Phil at Electrek: The plan looks to eliminate barriers to further accelerate the already rising rate of EV adoption in the city — estimates show EVs could increase from around 20,000 in the city today to more than 330,000 by 2025 — and it looks to address that by installing thousands and thousands of charge points, as Khan calls for “an electric vehicle revolution.” Transport for London (TfL) has already committed to installing 300 rapid charge points by the end of 2020, and it’s expected that over 3,500 “slow to fast” AC charge points will also be installed by the end of 2020. But many more will be needed if the city is to achieve its infrastructure goals, with anywhere from 36,000 to 51,600 total charge points seen as needed by 2025" https://electrek.co/2019/06/17/london-ev-charge-points-2025/ DELHI LAUNCHES APP TO BOOK SLOT AT EV CHARGING STATIONS "The first electric vehicle charging station in a public area has been installed in India’s capital city Delhi. Along with the charging station, a mobile phone application has also been launched to help electric vehicle users." reports Clean Technica: "To assist the vehicles users with charging, a mobile application has also been launched that allows users to book a slot to charge their vehicles using the application." [audio] LEAKED EMAIL REVEALS POSSIBLE RECORD TESLA DELIVERIES IN Q2 2019 "A recent email from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to all employees states that the automaker may be on track to have the best quarter of all time in terms of deliveries. If you thought that the Silicon Valley automaker couldn't easily top 2018 Q4 numbers, you may want to think again." reports InsideEVs: "Our good friends over at Teslarati first discovered the "alleged leaked" email via Chinese social media and stock trading website." "From: Elon Musk Date: Wed 5/22/2019 10:45 PM To: Everybody As of yesterday, we had over 50,000 net new orders for this quarter. Based on current trends, we have a good chance of exceeding the record 90,700 deliveries of Q4 last year and making this the highest deliveries/sales quarter in Tesla history! In order to achieve this, we need sustained output of 1,000 Model 3’s per day. Almost all parts of the Model 3 production system have exceeded 1000 units on multiple days (congratulations!!) and we’ve averaged about 900/day this week, so we’re only about 10% away from 7000/week. If we rally hard, we can do it! Thanks for your great work, Elon" https://insideevs.com/news/351085/tesla-model-3-q2-delivery-potential-leaked/ CONSUMER REPORTS: TESLA'S AUTOMATIC LANE CHANGES POSE SAFETY CONCERNS "Consumer Reports...has claimed that the latest version of the semi-autonomous driving feature poses "serious safety concerns," making automatic lane changes that are overly aggressive and don't properly anticipate human behavior. In tests, it would frequently cut off other drivers, pass on the right and have trouble anticipating fast-moving vehicles approaching from behind." says Engadget: "The outlet argued that companies should need to provide public evidence of a semi-autonomous system's safety before it's made available to buyers. It also contended that Navigate on Autopilot is more trouble than it's worth -- it's akin to "monitoring a kid behind the wheel for the very first time," CR's Jake Fisher said. While Tesla was still ahead of rivals on autonomy, CR thought that it was safer and more relaxing to perform lane changes yourself." https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/22/consumer-reports-tesla-navigate-on-autopilot-risk PURE-ELECTRIC VAUXHALL CORSA-E LEAKED AHEAD OF 2020 RELEASE "A pure-electric version of the next-generation Vauxhall Corsa is coming, as previewed by this leaked official image. When it goes on sale in the UK in early 2020, the Corsa-e will be the first new product produced by Vauxhall since it came under the ownership of Peugeot-Citroen (PSA). It will also launch the brand’s strategic push towards the electrified and all-electric market." according to AutoExpress: "The Vauxhall Corsa-e will sit on the same underpinnings as the recently-released Peugeot e-208. That means it should have a range of 211 miles, a 50kWh battery pack and a 134bhp electric motor driving the front wheels. Charge times should be identical, too, with an 80 per cent top-up taking 30 minutes using a 100kW fast charger." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/102657/pure-electric-vauxhall-corsa-e-revealed-with-211-mile-range MERCEDES-BENZ EQB SEEN IN CAMOUFLAGE "Mercedes-Benz EQC, which recently entered production, is just the first of many new all-electric cars under the new EQ brand. The German manufacturer is busy at work, developing also the smaller Mercedes-Benz EQB, which was recently caught in camouflage by walkoARTvideos on streets." reports Motor1.com: "The EQB is related to the Mercedes-Benz GLB, which besides the all-electric cousin, will get a plug-in hybrid version too. Rumours say that EQB could be rated at 500 km (310 miles) of range under WLTP, while the GLB EQ Power will have up to 62 miles (100 km) of all-electric range." https://uk.motor1.com/news/350861/mercedes-benz-eqb-spy-video/ RENAULT TO PRODUCE CAR-SHARE READY ZOE EV FOR FLEETS "Vulog, the supplier of shared mobility technology, announced a partnership with Renault, which will result in production of car-sharing ready vehicles." pick up InsideEVs today: "Starting immediately, Renault will be able to produce ZOE equipped with Vulog’s car sharing hardware directly on its assembly line. In effect, fleets interested in car sharing are now able to order ZOE equipped for car sharing from the start, instead of retrofitting the car afterward and save some cost, we assume. The partnership between Renault and Vulog suggests that car sharing is now popular enough to incorporate it on a production line." "By the end of 2019, over 2,500 Renault ZOEs equipped with Vulog’s car sharing technology will be in market, initially in northern Europe, South America and the United Arab Emirates." https://insideevs.com/news/350855/renault-produce-car-share-ready-zoe/ TEXAS LOOKS TO BOOST FEES ON EV’S TO FUND HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE "Texas is considering whether to impose additional registration fees on electric and hybrid vehicles, following nearly half the states that already impose higher fees on battery powered vehicles to compensate for lost gasoline taxes used to maintain roads and highways." says the Houston Chronicle: "The bills in Texas are unlikely to get through the legislative session, which ends Monday, but the issue is almost certain to resurface as Texas and other states wrestle with depleted highway funds as cars become more fuel efficient and federal gas taxes remain unchanged from their levels 26 years ago. With electric vehicles representing 2 percent of U.S. vehicle sales last year, lawmakers look to revamp the way the nation pays for its transportation network." A Green Car Reports Twitter poll last week timed well with this story as I've just seen the results: "The largest group of respondents agreed that per-mile fees seemed fairest, with 42 percent of our respondents choosing that option. Some commenters noted that many states already require safety inspections which record vehicle mileage, which could be used to track the mileage. The second-largest group, at 29 percent, favored the approach that most states seem to have taken (those states that try to raise highway funds from EVs at all, anyway), registration fees." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Texas-other-states-look-to-boost-fees-on-EV-s-13877118.php https://www2.greencarreports.com/news/1123208_how-should-ev-owners-pay-for-road-maintenance-twitter-poll-results HE BUILT AN EV IN HIS GARAGE. 10 YEARS LATER, HYUNDAI IS GIVING HIM $90 MILLION "The story of Croatia-based Rimac Automobili, which just might be the most unlikely of success stories. That’s because the company was established in 2009 by then-21-year-old Mate Rimac, who built an electric car in his garage." reports ThomasNet: "Ten years later, Rimac is all grown up and employs 500 workers. The company also recently announced an influx of cash from a joint effort by Hyundai and Kia. The automakers will dump about $90 million into the electric vehicle maker and also plan to establish a strategic partnership where they’ll collaborate on high-performance EVs" https://news.thomasnet.com/featured/at-21-he-built-an-ev-in-his-garage-10-years-later-hyundai-is-giving-him-90-million/ HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC INDIA LAUNCH ON JULY 9, 2019 "Hyundai will launch its first all-electric model in India, the Kona Electric, on July 9, 2019." Autocar says: "We had first reported in March last year that Hyundai had plans to bring its electric SUV to India, along with its plans to locally assemble to keep prices in check. Hyundai isn’t expecting to sell more than 60 units a month of the Kona Electric." https://www.autocarindia.com/car-news/hyundai-kona-electric-india-launch-on-july-9-2019-412829 FIRST DEBUT ON THE ROAD FOR THE CUPRA FORMENTOR PLUG-IN HYBRID The Cupra Formentor has made its dynamic debut around the roads of Cap de Formentor, Mallorca, from which it takes its name. The plug-in hybrid SUV is the first model developed specifically by Cupra and made its public static debut at Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. According to rumors the Cupra Formentor will be on sale starting from the beginning of 2020. http://www.magnetimarelli.com/focus-on-automotive/first-debut-road-cupra-formentor-plug-hybrid UPDATE ON CARLOS GHOSN "Nissan's former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, appeared in a Japanese courtroom Thursday for a hearing ahead of his trial on accusations of financial misconduct. It was the first of a series of hearings to iron out logistics for Ghosn's actual trial. The trial date has not been set, and experts say it could be months away." writes SFGate.com: "Ghosn insists he is innocent and says he was targeted in a "conspiracy" by others at Nissan Motor Co Nissan, which is allied with Renault SA of France, has seen profits nose-dive amid the fallout from Ghosn's arrest." https://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Former-Nissan-chairman-Ghosn-appears-in-Tokyo-13878054.php MEANWHILE...NISSAN IS THINKING ABOUT BATTERIES "Data from Nissan shows the batteries used by its Leaf electric car will outlast the vehicle by 10-12 years, said Francisco Carranza, managing director of Renault-Nissan Energy Services. Nissan monitors everything from charging patterns to battery degradation on the more than 400,000 Leafs it has sold in Europe since launching the first generation in 2011." reports Autonews Europe: "Based on the average of life of a car at 10 years, Carranza put the battery life at 22 years. “We are going to have to recover those batteries,” Carranza told the Automotive News Europe Congress here on Wednesday. Nissan has been looking at ways to boost revenue from electric cars for itself and its customers as traditional revenue streams dry up in the switch from combustion cars to electric cars. “Aftersales revenue will massively suffer from electrification,” Carranza said. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/nissan-looks-ways-use-long-lasting-ev-batteries COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Themen heute: Starkes Comeback: Opel/Vauxhall seit einem Jahr Teil der Groupe PSA /// Stop-and-go in Richtung Heimat - Stauprognose für 3. bis 5. August 1.
Tuesday 8th May 2018. TESLA REQUIRES ALL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE AN EMPLOYEE VOUCH FOR THEM Elon Musks recent email to staff said "“I have been disappointed to discover how many contractor companies are interwoven throughout Tesla,” Musk’s email read. “Often, it is like a Russian nesting doll of contractor, subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc. before you finally find someone doing actual work” Now according to Digital Trends: "Musk’s original email gave contractors a week in order to prove their worth to the company, but he has since extended that deadline. However, he is also requiring that contractors have an employee willing to vouch for them or else they will be denied access. Musk’s requirement that Tesla employees put their reputation on the line will likely make it very difficult for the majority of contractors to obtain recommendations. After all, his email seems to imply that if a contractor’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory then it could impact the job of the employee who vouched for it." The full email from Elon over the weekend and obtained by Electrek, reads: "Please send a note to HR before Monday justifying the excellence, necessity and trustworthiness by individual (not just the contractor company as a whole) of every non-Tesla person who has badge access to our buildings or network access to our systems. By default, anyone who does not have a Tesla employee putting their reputation on the line for them will be denied access to our facilities and networks on Monday morning. This applies worldwide. The "barnacles" are a reference to Tesla contractors, an analogy Musk first used publicly in the May 2 earnings call. Now Tesla employees are being asked to put their own careers on the line to justify any contractors they need." TESLA SOLAR ROOF PATENT REVEALS THE SCIENCE BEHIND ITS STUNNING DESIGN We love a bit of Solar chat, and on Inverse.com they've been talking about the Tesla Solar roof. Why does the Tesla Solar Roof look just like a normal roof? How do they not look like traditional panels? Inverse report: "One of the most fascinating aspects of Tesla’s solar roof, which started reaching homes earlier this year, is that it looks like an ordinary roof. The design hides advanced energy-harvesting cells wired to a home battery, and a new patent application published last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sheds light on how the company pulled off the technical feat." Inverse continues: "Louvers inside the tiles act like blinds in a window. The light hitting the roof from the sky passes through, but from the street level the louvers block the sight of the cells and make the tile appear smooth. TESLA REGISTERS 5,009 NEW MODEL 3 VINS AS TSLA RETAKES $50B MARKET CAP On Twitter, Matthew Koloski (@mattk926) said: "#Tesla registered 5009 new #Model3 VINs. Highest VIN is 39263.". Simon at Teslarati point out: “Interacting with members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Koloski noted that none of the new VINs represented dual-motor AWD variants of the Model 3. Over the course of the past few months, Tesla’s VIN registrations have been increasing in number. Exactly two weeks ago, Tesla registered 5,170 new Model 3 VINs — one of the largest batches yet. With this in mind, a production rate of 3,000-4,000 Model 3 per week is starting to seem feasible." MUSK BUYS $9.85 MILLION IN TESLA SHARES AFTER TAUNTING SHORTS Bloomberg have picked up: Elon Musk "bought about $9.85 million worth of Tesla shares on Monday, his biggest purchase since March 2017, according to a regulatory filing. Musk, 46, already was Tesla’s largest shareholder, with his stake now approaching 20 percent" He's also been taunting those betting against Tesla on Twitter saying: "“The sheer magnitude of short carnage will be unreal. If you’re short, I suggest tiptoeing quietly to the exit." FUTURE PROOFING THE OPEL BRAND IN AN ELECTRIC FUTURE Sarah Timmermans, the CEO of Opel Belgium, has been talking about the future of Opel now it's owned by PSA Groupe. In a conversation with Fleet Europe she outlined the challenges electric cars will bring: "We have announced to all our dealers across Europe that we need to change our way to market, that both we and our dealers need to adapt to the changing customer behaviour, and to the changing landscape – disruptions such as electric vehicles. We have clearly indicated that we are entirely technology-neutral. Everybody knows that we need to come down to 95 grams of CO2 emitted per km by 2020, and this is going to require a mix of powertrains. So we are working on electric vehicles, hybrids, hydrogen, along with petrol and diesel in their most ecological versions. Opel/Vauxhall will have 4 electrified car lines on the market by 2020, including the Grandland X PHEV and the next generation Corsa that will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. On top of this, every new passenger car line in Europe will get an electrified option – offering a BEV or a hybrid version alongside efficient internal combustion engine." BATTERY SHORTAGE INTERRUPTS HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC SALES Orders for the Ioniq Electric in Canada are currently on hold due to a global shortage of battery supply. A leaked memo to Hyundai dealers titled "18My Ioniq EV Short-Term Production Shortage" said: ""Due to a temporary global battery supply shortage, the sold order entry system for 18MY Ioniq EV will be closed effective immediately. The 19MY Ioniq EV will be opened at the same time to allow for pre-sale of 19My Ioniq EV, with deliveries beginning in July." According to Green Car Reports; "All this comes just before Hyundai is scheduled to release a long-range version of the Ioniq Electric with a bigger battery, slated to go 200 miles or more on a charge. The current Ioniq Electric comes with a single battery size with a rated range of 124 miles. Further, the Hyundai Motor America spokesman allowed that the battery shortage may affect production of Hyundai's upcoming Kona Electric, which is expected to go on sale toward the end of this year with a 64-kwh battery pack rated at 238 miles of range." WHOLE FOODS BEGINS INSTALLING EV CHARGERS AT STORES "Whole Foods has announced a partnership with electric vehicle charging company Blink to begin installing the EV charge points at its US stores" starting with three stores in Pennsylvania say Autoguide: "Blink charging stations can be located using the company’s smartphone app. The app can also relay information on the charge point’s status thanks to Blink’s cloud-based network. The charging stations are now open at Whole Foods’ locations in Lancaster, Spring House and Exton, Pennsylvania." NEW BATTERY LAYOUT AND MOTOR COMPONENTS IN HYUNDAI / KIA ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Something I found on the Hyundai IONIQ forum, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro are similar but different. "These two cars have the same battery capacity, the same battery pack case, the same motor and electronics. But it seems the two cars have very different battery cells. The Kona EV has NCM622 cells from LG Chem that are optimized more for power density. The Niro EV has NCM811 cells from SK Innovation that are optimized more for energy density. The Niro EV is more of a family car - bigger more comfortable - but the acceleration output through the battery management system (BMS) control is relatively low. The Kona EV cells however allow higher-powered driving. Its body is also smaller, and its agility excellent, which is an advantage for sports driving. In the end, it is analysed that Niro EV is beneficial to achieve stable driving performance and Kona EV has advantages in higher-powered driving." Friday 6th April 2018. MASSIVE BATCH OF TESLA VINS REGISTERED We heard earlier in the week Tesla is making over 2,000 Model 3’s a week so it will come as no surprise they’ve registered almost 5,000 new VINs. At this rate it will last them about two weeks. It’s just a week after they registered 2,000 VINs so it looks like that exponential curve that Elon Musk talks about might be starting. A reminder that by Saturday, 30th June, they said they should be making 5,000 every week. Even if they maintained 5,000 a week for the second half of the year it would be 130,000 Model 3 vehicles in the second half of the year. And there’s every chance the curve will continue, as the target is 10,000 per week by year end. GROUPE PSA GET SERIOUS Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel/Vauxhall, and its Free2move all come under the Groupe PSA umbrella, and it’s creating a Business Unit dedicated to electric vehicles, effective 1 April, responsible for defining and deploying the Group’s electric vehicle strategy and rolling out the related products and services. Meanwhile CEO Carlos Tavares said European Union fines for companies that miss tougher CO2 reduction targets could bring a major European automaker "to its knees," allowing a Chinese buyer to step in with its own electric vehicle technology "The impact is very obvious. It's going to create a Chinese Trojan Horse in Europe," Tavares told an industry event hosted by French car magazine Le Journal de l'Auto. PSA and other European carmakers are facing declining sales of fuel-efficient diesel models, making it harder to meet CO2 targets and avoid large fines. UK DIESEL CRASH Here in the UK, a bad day for diesel and good one for electric cars. ThisIsMoney says: “diesel sales plummeting by more than a third in the industry's most important month of the year. Sales of diesel models, which have been subject to additional taxes in the last year, plunged by 37 per cent. Registrations of these 'cleaner' hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles rose by 5.7 per cent last month.” In March 2017 22,818 electric cars were sold which went up to 24,126 last month. That’s a total market share up from 4.1% to 5.1%. Year to date, which is basically looking at Q1 combined, shows an even better picture. In Q1 2017, 33,405 electric cars were sold and that went up to 36,693 this year, and increase of 9.8%. MORE CHINA INVESTMENT Electrek reports that: “Chinese EV start-up Singulato Motors said that it secured funding to invest $2.39 billion USD in a massive manufacturing hub in East China over the next five years.” The Singulato iS6 is their SUV which has a range of 400 km (~250 miles), 0-60mph of four seconds, and a price range starting at $32,000. SUBSCRIBE TO AN EV How about spending a monthly fee for a BMW - including insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance? How about unrestricted access to a select portfolio of BMW vehicles? How about no limit to the number of times you can switch vehicles within a given month? With Access by BMW, our members will enjoy the freedom of personal mobility with access across a broad range of our highly emotional vehicles,” It’s $2,000 a month, starting in Nashville to test the water, and you get access to cars including BMW 5 Series including 530e and the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance PHEV.
