Dec. 6, 2023 | Hyundai Motor America CMO Angela Zepeda; Stellantis says EVs profitable by Automotive News
The Kia EV9 is an important step in the effort to move electric vehicles from the status symbols of the rich to everyday vehicles for mainstream Americans. And what could be more mainstream American than a three-row SUV? That's the market the Kia EV9 is trying to crack as the first non-luxury battery-electric dedicated three-row SUV to hit the American marketplace. It brings plenty of positives to its effort — expressive exterior design, roomy cabin, advanced driver assistance features, and several configurations. As guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo discovered, the Kia EV9 is also rewarding to drive. The GT-Line version of the EV9 has 379 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. Its 0-to-60 mph acceleration time is under five seconds. For those who like road trips as we do, the EV9 offers up to 300 miles on a charge in the long-range version of the Light trim. Kia says that with the use of ultrafast recharging on high-speed DC chargers, the EV9 can go from 10 to 80 percent state of charge in under 25 minutes. We'll have more information on the 2024 Kia EV9 in the road test segment. Host Jack Nerad details the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid Nightshade Edition in his portion of this week's road tests. The Camry Hybrid Nightshade isn't a sports car or even a sports sedan, but, as Nerad found out, it has a lot of fun-to-drive attributes, including good initial acceleration. Add its driving dynamics to a comfortable cabin and 50+ mpg fuel economy, and you have a real bargain. Speaking of real bargains, the Hyundai Kona has made a name for itself as a strong SUV value. Now, there's an all-new version of the vehicle, and this week's special guest will tell us all about it. Ricky Lao is the director of product planning for Hyundai Motor America, and we'll get his behind-the-scenes insight into the 2024 Kona. In the news this week, the United States is heavily divided over many issues, and to that list, we can now add electric cars. Some states are moving forward quickly with the new EV technology, while others are taking the opposite stance. Details on where your state stands on EVs coming up. A world-famous sports car manufacturer is gearing up to become a mainstream brand. We'll tell you which brand that is and how they plan to gain your attention coming up. And an executive for a major global automaker says batteries will have to change drastically before we see widespread electric car adoption. We'll tell you how he thinks they must change in this segment, along with our comments. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

When hump day rolls around and it drops us in the middle of the month, we have to talk about some controversy, naturally. Leading off this morning are Volvo's plans for a direct to consumer model, followed by Hyundai and Kia battling TikTok and the release of the consumer pricing index.Volvo's European plans for direct to consumer sales has US dealers prepping for defensive measures with the automaker.Volvo's new CEO, Jim Rowan, argued the disconnect between the OEM and consumer in pre- and post- sale environments goes against his experience in the consumer electronics industry.“Dealer associations in at least two states — Virginia and California — sent Volvo letters warning that the strategy might violate the automaker's dealer agreements or state laws meant to prevent automakers from competing with their franchises.”Plans are to use the UK as a proving ground and learning environment for the brandFollowing the TikTok trend of stolen Kia and Hyundai vehicles, the automaker is set to provide a software update to mitigate the risk to owners.Way back on Nov. 23, we talked about how a St. Louis dealership was installing $200 bluetooth repeaters to prevent theft.Hyundai's free software patch will be available on 1M out of the 4M affected vehicles, and include an anti-theft sticker to deter attack, a longer alarm, and the need for a physical key to start the vehicle.“Hyundai is committed to ensuring the quality and integrity of our products through continuous improvement and is pleased to provide affected customers with an additional theft deterrent through this software upgrade,” said Randy Parker, CEO, Hyundai Motor America. “We have prioritized the upgrade's availability for owners and lessees of our highest selling vehicles and those most targeted by thieves in order for dealers to service them first.”Hyundai expects to have a fix for the other 3M vulnerable vehicles in June. The consumer price index was released yesterday, showing slowing inflation, and markets stayed stable despite growth in major index categories like food and energy. The average of all items was up 6.4%, with eggs taking the top spot up over 70% YOY.Vehicles took an 11.6% dip, which we know in the industry, which is a line item attached to only a small subset of the population, in contrast to the other items.Worth noting is the fact that common household items are the largest factors to consider in the impact of inflation on consumers in lower income brackets.“It's clear that the Federal Reserve has more to do in order to continue to slow down inflation,” said Eugenio Aleman, chief economist at Raymond James.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email Share your positive dealer stories: https://www.asotu.com/positivity ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Timothy Trecek of Habush, Habush & Rottier S.C. (https://www.habush.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Two-time Wisconsin Association for Justice Trial Lawyer of the Year Award winner Timothy Trecek of Habush, Habush & Rottier S.C. shares how he successfully represented Edward Vanderventer, Jr. and his wife Susan after Edward was rendered a paraplegic following a traffic accident due to a seatback defect in the 2013 Hyundai Elantra. In July 2015, Edward was driving a Hyundai Elantra when he slowed down to make a left turn and was hit from behind by a 17-year-old driver. Upon impact, Edward's headrest flew backwards into the back seat and the headrest guide poles within the seatback deformed toward his spine. The headrest guide poles separated his spinal column, rendering him a paraplegic. Despite Hyundai's attempts to blame Edward's spinal injuries on the rear-end crash and a degenerative spinal condition, the Racine County, Wisconsin jury found Hyundai negligent in the design and testing of the driver's seat. In February 2020, the jury awarded $38,164,263 in damages to Edward and Susan Vanderventer, resulting in the largest single plaintiff compensatory award in Wisconsin history and a landmark victory for Timothy Trecek in the same courtroom where he experienced his first trial victory as a high school mock trial attorney 36 years earlier. Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents Guest Bio: Timothy Trecek In 2020, as lead trial counsel, Tim Trecek obtained a $38.1 million verdict against Hyundai Motor Company, for a defectively designed seat back and head restraint system in his client's 2013 Hyundai Elantra (see news story). The verdict is the largest single plaintiff compensatory award in Wisconsin history. The verdict included $7.77 million for the plaintiff's spouse, another record for Wisconsin verdicts. Based on the significance of his 2020 verdict, Tim was honored to receive the Robert L. Habush, Trial Lawyer of the Year Award, the second time being recognized with said award (read acceptance speech). He was also awarded The Litigation Counsel of America's Tommy Malone Outstanding Verdict Award, an honor bestowed upon one attorney in the US whose verdict is extraordinary in amount or significance. Tim is the Vice President, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Secretary of Habush Habush & Rottier and has been a member of the law firm since 1995. He is a managing partner of both the Milwaukee and West Bend offices. Tim specializes in all types of personal injury litigation. He has successfully litigated cases involving automobile defects (airbags, seatbelts, seats and structural integrity), construction accidents, mis-filled prescriptions, car/motorcycle accidents, truck/semi accidents, slip/trip and falls, dog bites, injuries involving horses, brain injuries, RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy), machine defects (saws, chippers, cement mixer defects, deer stands, snow blowers), child car seats, personal watercraft, and specialized experience with serious burn injuries from events such as explosions and utility/electrical accidents. Tim has worked on cases throughout the United States. Due to his significant trial experience, he has been certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and has been selected for exclusive membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was recognized in the January 25, 2006 issue of the Wisconsin Law Journal (see article) for holding three of the state's top five settlements in 2005. In 2009, he obtained the third largest reported award in the State of Wisconsin ($6 million) for his client who was injured in an accident with a semi-trailer truck. In February of 2011, Tim obtained a $16 million award on behalf of eight injured scaffold workers involved in a dust explosion at the WE Energies Oak Creek plant. This is the largest award in the State's history involving injuries caused by an explosion of PRB (Powder River Basin) coal dust. It also makes Tim the only attorney in Wisconsin to have four multi-million-dollar recoveries against the State's largest utility. In 2011, the Wisconsin Association for Justice selected Tim as the annual recipient of the prestigious Robert L. Habush Wisconsin Trial Lawyer of the Year Award for the first time (read acceptance speech). Additionally, he was named as one of Wisconsin's Leaders in the Law in 2008 by the Wisconsin Law Journal. In 2013 Tim was accepted as a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Attorneys, one of the youngest recipients of this venerable honor. In 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021, he was honored to be listed as “Lawyer of Year” for Product Liability Litigation in Milwaukee, by Best Lawyers in America. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 2010. In 2020, Tim was inducted into the invitation-only Summit Council, an exclusive group of the nation's top civil justice attorneys. Membership requires at least three verdicts of $1 million and at least one verdict in excess of $10 million. From 1999 to 2007, Tim served two terms on the District 2 Committee of the Office of Lawyer Regulation at the request of the Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Since 2005, Tim has been teaching an Advanced Trial Practice course at Marquette University Law School. He has given speeches to other lawyers on a variety of legal topics. Tim also serves on the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee's Board of Directors. The Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee is one of the nation's oldest, continuously operating, public interest law firms. Although he was born, raised, and works in southeastern Wisconsin, Tim has earned a national reputation as a successful plaintiff's trial lawyer. Tim's successes have been so noteworthy that they have been chronicled in papers such as the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle and dozens of other publications. Tim is also actively involved in his church and the community. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. U.S. STEPS CLOSER TO NEW $12,500 EV TAX CREDIT"The US Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday approved a bill to increase the tax credit for electric vehicles assembled by union workers in the US up to $12,500. This would apply to electric vehicles up to a price of $80,000." reports Chris Randall at Electrive: "The new law would remove this existing cap, but a different, future limit is included in the proposal: For example, the tax credit would be phased out over a three-year period once 50 per cent of car sales in the US are electric cars. Now for the proposed increase in the credit up to $12,500: The proponents of the bill, led by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, propose to increase the $7,500 tax credit by $2,500 for vehicles assembled in the US and by another $2,500 for vehicles manufactured in plants whose employees are members of or represented by a union." Yahoo! News points out: “That would mean smaller credits to automakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen and others who do not have U.S. union workers, and companies building EVs outside the United States. The EV incentives are estimated to cost $31.6 billion through 2031, according to a congressional estimate. The bill must still be approved by the full Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. The bill also includes a 30% tax credit for manufacturers to retool or build new facilities to produce advanced energy technologies including batteries and new incentives to purchase commercial electric vehicles." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/27/us-senate-approves-increase-of-ev-tax-credit/ https://news.yahoo.com/u-senate-panel-advances-ev-025709643.html RIVIAN DELAYS DELIVERIES OF THE R1T LAUNCH EDITION BY ONE MONTH"Rivian said that deliveries of the R1T Launch Edition, the limited edition release of its first series of “electric adventure vehicles,” will be delayed by a month, according to an update on its website." reports Tech Crunch: "Customers who preordered can now expect to start receiving their pickup trucks in July instead of June, with Launch Edition deliveries to be completed by Spring 2022. The change was first spotted by the Rivian Forum. The one-month delay was due to a combination of small issues, including delays on shipping containers, the ongoing chip shortage as well as ensuring the servicing piece is properly set up, a Rivian spokesperson said." https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/27/rivian-delays-deliveries-of-the-r1t-launch-edition-by-one-month/ FORMER WAYMO FINANCE CHIEF DWYER JOINS EV STARTUP RIVIAN"Rivian Automotive Inc., the electric-vehicle startup backed by Amazon.com Inc., has hired a former finance chief from Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving arm Waymo LLC. Gerard Dwyer, who was Waymo’s chief financial officer, joined Rivian this week as vice president of business finance, according to a post on LinkedIn." says Bloomber: "Waymo, long viewed as the leader among autonomous-driving startups, is seeking to raise as much as $4 billion from outside investors and also considering an IPO, Bloomberg reported last week, citing people familiar with the plans." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-27/former-waymo-finance-chief-dwyer-joins-ev-start-up-rivian FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC GOOGLE STREET VIEW CAR IS A JAGUAR I-PACE"For the past few years, Google has equipped its mapping vehicles with air pollution sensors. Google worked with Jaguar Land Rover on the first all-electric Street View car that will be tasked with measuring air quality in Dublin, Ireland." says 9to5Mac: "A Jaguar I-Pace is being used for this effort, and it will see a roof mounting for the tall Street View camera, as well as a new rear-window glass for wiring and redesigned interior switchgear for sensor controls. The visual system was last updated in 2017 to provide higher-resolution images while being less bulky. The vehicle will also be equipped with Aclima mobile air sensors that record nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as well as fine particles (PM2.5). Meanwhile, Google is partnering with the Dublin City Council on the Environmental Insights Explorer tool that provides local data on air quality." https://9to5google.com/2021/05/25/electric-google-street-view-car/ FIRST RIDE IN THE ELECTRIC LUCID AIR SEDAN "The ride was comfortable, and while the Air makes the low-speed pedestrian noises all EVs are required to make, nothing is piped into the cabin. That means riding in an Air is a mostly calm and serene experience, at least until the driver floors the throttle. After my first encounter back in 2017, I was impressed with how well-built the Air was. Despite being an alpha prototype, everything I poked or prodded worked, including the three screens and their UI. But the car I rode in this past weekend felt like a huge step beyond that earlier experience in every regard." writes ArsTechnica: "Lucid is currently building a batch of 70 preproduction cars, with another run of 100 that, among other things, will be used for PR and marketing. And I can't tell you how curious I am to drive one of them." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/05/we-got-our-first-ride-in-the-electric-lucid-air-sedan/ HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 SUBSCRIPTION WILL LET EV INTENDERS TRY BEFORE THEY BUY"Although Hyundai hasn’t yet announced a base price or price range for the 2022 Ioniq 5 electric vehicle, it’s already suggested that a new subscription plan will be one of the ways you can get behind the wheel of this very intriguing EV. Hyundai Motor America on Monday said that in their research they found that what it terms “mobility pioneers”—people more eager to try electric vehicles—were used to using subscription services in many parts of their life." according to Green Car Reports: "This is Hyundai’s second try offering an electric car under a subscription plan. In 2017 and 2018 it offered the Ioniq Electric with an “Ioniq Unlimited” program—focused toward cost-conscious Millennials—that folded charging costs, scheduled maintenance, and even replacement costs of wear items into a single monthly payment. Although Hyundai won’t detail the program until later in the year, there are already two key differences. This time, it’s intended for intervals as short as one to three months, and it’s aimed at a more affluent crowd—just those who want to try before they buy." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132386_hyundai-ioniq-5-subscription-will-let-ev-intenders-try-before-they-buy TESLA LOSES U.S. DESIGNATION FOR SOME ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES"Newer Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will no longer be labeled as having some advanced safety features after the automaker said it was removing radar sensors to transition to a camera-based Autopilot system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Wednesday." reports Automotive NEws: "The U.S. agency confirmed it updated its website to show that Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced on or after April 27 "do not have NHTSA's check mark for recommended safety technologies: forward collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support." The agency said it "only includes check marks for the model production range for the vehicles tested." The NHTSA's five-star crash ratings website includes check marks for up to four recommended advanced safety technologies." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/tesla-loses-us-designation-some-advanced-safety-features EVGO LAUNCHES RESERVATIONS CHARGING PROGRAM ON US WEST COAST"Public fast-charging network EVgo has announced a new program called EVgo Reservations that gives drivers the freedom to claim their spot at a charger ahead of time. It was reported in the months following that the vehicle would be a Lincoln SUV, but Ford’s luxury marque had not confirmed any parts of those reports until today." https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/29/21113578/lincoln-rivian-electric-suv-ford-platform-tech TESLA'S GIANT HOME BATTERY IS PAYING FOR ITSELF "Four years ago, Tesla installed its first ever Powerwall battery pack in an Australian household, and now the residing Pfitzner family has revealed just how much of an impact the energy-saving measure has made." picks up TechRadar: "When combined with a solar panel system, Powerwall allows users to store any excess energy generated by the panels in order to use it at times when the sun alone can’t provide the necessary power. Over the course of four years, this resulted in the Pfitzner family saving a total of about $5,700 (AU$8,463) on their electricity bills, paying an average of just 30 cents (AU$0.46) per day. It’s worth noting that the family spent AU$16,000 (about $10,800) installing the battery, solar system, and any related hardware to the home, so it hasn’t quite paid itself off yet." https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/worlds-first-tesla-powerwall-is-paying-itself-off-much-faster-than-expected TESLA PARTNERS WITH LG CHEM, CATL FOR BATTERY SUPPLY " Tesla Inc has entered into a partnership with South Korea’s LG Chem and China’s CATL for supply of batteries used in its electric cars, the company said on Wednesday. Tesla, which has a long-standing battery supply agreement with Japan’s Panasonic Corp (6752.T), said its pact with LG Chem and CATL was at a smaller scale." says Reuters: "Last year, Reuters reported on Tesla’s talks with LG Chem to source batteries for vehicles to be made in its Shanghai plant. A source had also told Reuters that the electric carmaker may source batteries from CATL in the future." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-china-catl/tesla-partners-with-lg-chem-catl-for-battery-supply-idUSKBN1ZT16G BYD BUILDS NEW LITHIUM-POWERED FORKLIFT FACILITY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA "BYD continues to sprint towards electrifying every vehicle category in the world with news today that it is adding an electric forklift shipping and receiving facility in the Southern California city of Rancho Dominguez." according to CleanTechnica: "BYD believes its lithium-powered forklifts are game changers as they extend the life expectancy of the battery pack significantly compared to their lead-acid predecessors. A 90-minute charge time helps them to stay fully topped up with minimal downtime throughout a shift or day." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/30/byd-builds-new-lithium-powered-forklift-plant-in-southern-california/ 2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC BOASTS 37% MORE DRIVING RANGE, NOW STARTING AT $33,045 Hyundai Motor America announced prices for the eco-friendly 2020 IONIQ Electric car. Welcome to the WIRe Series. Recorded live in Austin, this series is bringing interviews straight to you from the WIRe MRx Meet & Mingle event. In this interview, host Jamin Brazil interviews Rebecca Brooks, Founder and CEO of Alter Agents. Contact Rebecca Online: LinkedIn Alter Agents [00:00] My guest today is Rebecca Brooks, the CEO and founder of Alter Agents, which is a super cool name. It’s totally like 007’s research, I think in a good way. [00:14] Thank you. [00:14] How are you doing? [00:15] I’m good. How are you? [00:16] Good. Yeah, we’ve known each other for ages in the industry. It’s been ages since we’ve seen each other at the same time. [00:20] I know. It’s really good to see you. [00:22] So, we’re at the... live at the WIRe events today with... in Austin with IIeX. I have not been to Austin in literally over 20 years, and the city has completely changed. How long have you been part of WIRe? [00:36] I’ve been part of WIRe... I mean I feel like since the beginning. I started going to the first meetings in L.A. about ten years ago, which is when it started. And I’m really happy to be more fully engaged with the group than ever before. So, I’m the Los Angeles event lead in program. I’m also a mentor; I’m part of the Executive Group. We’re going to our Summit next month. So it’s become a really integral part of my professional life. I love it. [01:04] We’re going to dive into your business in just a minute, but I want to just focus a little bit on WIRe. Talk to me little bit about the Mentorship Program. What sort of person are you looking for to fill that seat? And the other side of it is the mentee. What kind of person is a good fit in that role? [01:22] Yeah, I think that anybody with ten plus years of experience in the industry, whether it’s all on the client or all on the supplier side, is a valuable mentor. And really someone that will help younger women navigate the corporation world. A lot of them are trying to come up in their business. So, they’re looking to get promotions; they’re looking to get raises. And that’s a difficult thing for anybody to navigate but especially young women, particularly if their organization is very male-dominated. So the WIRe mentors really have invaluable experience in that regard because they’ve all been successful enough to navigate that path, right? And then, in terms of the mentees, I mean we’re really looking for women that will not only benefit from the program but that will also continue the legacy of WIRe and, in a few years, turn around and mentor themselves and that are really committed to the program. [02:18] It’s an important work on both sides of it. What kind of time commitment is involved? [02:22] For me... Well, I’ve been with my mentee now for two years. [02:26] Wow. [02:26] Yeah, she had the option of leaving and going to somebody else, but she stuck with me, which was nice. So, we talk every month. We try to do it in person if we can but schedules don’t allow that. We usually have a list of objectives that we’re going through from short-term goals to long-term goals; so, we’re always addressing those, talking about them. And then I’m available to her if things arise. Yeah, but usually once a month. [02:55] So, shift gears a little bit. Alter Agents, tell me a little bit about what you guys do. [03:01] So, we’re a full-service market research consultancy. We’re really methodology agnostic, vertical agnostic. We do qualitative and quantitative. We work with large companies like Hyundai Motor America and Viking River Cruises. We work with smaller brands like Humm Kombucha and Evelyn & Bobbie. Really what we found is that our niche isn’t in a particular type of research or with a particular type of industry, but really more around those clients that need a more consultat...
Tuesday 8th May 2018. TESLA REQUIRES ALL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE AN EMPLOYEE VOUCH FOR THEM Elon Musks recent email to staff said "“I have been disappointed to discover how many contractor companies are interwoven throughout Tesla,” Musk’s email read. “Often, it is like a Russian nesting doll of contractor, subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc. before you finally find someone doing actual work” Now according to Digital Trends: "Musk’s original email gave contractors a week in order to prove their worth to the company, but he has since extended that deadline. However, he is also requiring that contractors have an employee willing to vouch for them or else they will be denied access. Musk’s requirement that Tesla employees put their reputation on the line will likely make it very difficult for the majority of contractors to obtain recommendations. After all, his email seems to imply that if a contractor’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory then it could impact the job of the employee who vouched for it." The full email from Elon over the weekend and obtained by Electrek, reads: "Please send a note to HR before Monday justifying the excellence, necessity and trustworthiness by individual (not just the contractor company as a whole) of every non-Tesla person who has badge access to our buildings or network access to our systems. By default, anyone who does not have a Tesla employee putting their reputation on the line for them will be denied access to our facilities and networks on Monday morning. This applies worldwide. The "barnacles" are a reference to Tesla contractors, an analogy Musk first used publicly in the May 2 earnings call. Now Tesla employees are being asked to put their own careers on the line to justify any contractors they need." TESLA SOLAR ROOF PATENT REVEALS THE SCIENCE BEHIND ITS STUNNING DESIGN We love a bit of Solar chat, and on Inverse.com they've been talking about the Tesla Solar roof. Why does the Tesla Solar Roof look just like a normal roof? How do they not look like traditional panels? Inverse report: "One of the most fascinating aspects of Tesla’s solar roof, which started reaching homes earlier this year, is that it looks like an ordinary roof. The design hides advanced energy-harvesting cells wired to a home battery, and a new patent application published last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office sheds light on how the company pulled off the technical feat." Inverse continues: "Louvers inside the tiles act like blinds in a window. The light hitting the roof from the sky passes through, but from the street level the louvers block the sight of the cells and make the tile appear smooth. TESLA REGISTERS 5,009 NEW MODEL 3 VINS AS TSLA RETAKES $50B MARKET CAP On Twitter, Matthew Koloski (@mattk926) said: "#Tesla registered 5009 new #Model3 VINs. Highest VIN is 39263.". Simon at Teslarati point out: “Interacting with members of the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, Koloski noted that none of the new VINs represented dual-motor AWD variants of the Model 3. Over the course of the past few months, Tesla’s VIN registrations have been increasing in number. Exactly two weeks ago, Tesla registered 5,170 new Model 3 VINs — one of the largest batches yet. With this in mind, a production rate of 3,000-4,000 Model 3 per week is starting to seem feasible." MUSK BUYS $9.85 MILLION IN TESLA SHARES AFTER TAUNTING SHORTS Bloomberg have picked up: Elon Musk "bought about $9.85 million worth of Tesla shares on Monday, his biggest purchase since March 2017, according to a regulatory filing. Musk, 46, already was Tesla’s largest shareholder, with his stake now approaching 20 percent" He's also been taunting those betting against Tesla on Twitter saying: "“The sheer magnitude of short carnage will be unreal. If you’re short, I suggest tiptoeing quietly to the exit." FUTURE PROOFING THE OPEL BRAND IN AN ELECTRIC FUTURE Sarah Timmermans, the CEO of Opel Belgium, has been talking about the future of Opel now it's owned by PSA Groupe. In a conversation with Fleet Europe she outlined the challenges electric cars will bring: "We have announced to all our dealers across Europe that we need to change our way to market, that both we and our dealers need to adapt to the changing customer behaviour, and to the changing landscape – disruptions such as electric vehicles. We have clearly indicated that we are entirely technology-neutral. Everybody knows that we need to come down to 95 grams of CO2 emitted per km by 2020, and this is going to require a mix of powertrains. So we are working on electric vehicles, hybrids, hydrogen, along with petrol and diesel in their most ecological versions. Opel/Vauxhall will have 4 electrified car lines on the market by 2020, including the Grandland X PHEV and the next generation Corsa that will also be available as a fully electric vehicle. On top of this, every new passenger car line in Europe will get an electrified option – offering a BEV or a hybrid version alongside efficient internal combustion engine." BATTERY SHORTAGE INTERRUPTS HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC SALES Orders for the Ioniq Electric in Canada are currently on hold due to a global shortage of battery supply. A leaked memo to Hyundai dealers titled "18My Ioniq EV Short-Term Production Shortage" said: ""Due to a temporary global battery supply shortage, the sold order entry system for 18MY Ioniq EV will be closed effective immediately. The 19MY Ioniq EV will be opened at the same time to allow for pre-sale of 19My Ioniq EV, with deliveries beginning in July." According to Green Car Reports; "All this comes just before Hyundai is scheduled to release a long-range version of the Ioniq Electric with a bigger battery, slated to go 200 miles or more on a charge. The current Ioniq Electric comes with a single battery size with a rated range of 124 miles. Further, the Hyundai Motor America spokesman allowed that the battery shortage may affect production of Hyundai's upcoming Kona Electric, which is expected to go on sale toward the end of this year with a 64-kwh battery pack rated at 238 miles of range." WHOLE FOODS BEGINS INSTALLING EV CHARGERS AT STORES "Whole Foods has announced a partnership with electric vehicle charging company Blink to begin installing the EV charge points at its US stores" starting with three stores in Pennsylvania say Autoguide: "Blink charging stations can be located using the company’s smartphone app. The app can also relay information on the charge point’s status thanks to Blink’s cloud-based network. The charging stations are now open at Whole Foods’ locations in Lancaster, Spring House and Exton, Pennsylvania." NEW BATTERY LAYOUT AND MOTOR COMPONENTS IN HYUNDAI / KIA ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Something I found on the Hyundai IONIQ forum, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro are similar but different. "These two cars have the same battery capacity, the same battery pack case, the same motor and electronics. But it seems the two cars have very different battery cells. The Kona EV has NCM622 cells from LG Chem that are optimized more for power density. The Niro EV has NCM811 cells from SK Innovation that are optimized more for energy density. The Niro EV is more of a family car - bigger more comfortable - but the acceleration output through the battery management system (BMS) control is relatively low. The Kona EV cells however allow higher-powered driving. Its body is also smaller, and its agility excellent, which is an advantage for sports driving. In the end, it is analysed that Niro EV is beneficial to achieve stable driving performance and Kona EV has advantages in higher-powered driving." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Washington, D.C. has been leading a double life of late. Not only is it the American Capitol but it seems to have usurped the title of the Motor City from Detroit as well. With federal loans to automakers, Car Czars and CAFE requirements, there’s been an extraordinary amount of auto activity in the District the last few years. That’s one of the reasons that Autoline visited our nation’s capitol earlier this year to talk autos with a variety of influencers. Join John McElroy on this week’s show as he speaks with Phil Murtaugh from CODA Automotive, Roland Hwang of the Natural Resources Defense Council, Dave Zukchowski from Hyundai Motor America and Margo Oge of the Environmental Protection Agency.
