Show #821   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 26th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CALIFORNIA PUSH FOR ZERO-EMISSIONS HEAVY TRUCKS STARTS IN 2024 "The state of California is requiring all trucks to be zero-emission beginning in 2024, thanks to a new mandate from the California Air Resources Board. The regulation, which CARB calls the “first in the world,”is meant to be a step towards California meeting its long-term emissions goals." reports Engadget: "The rule would apply specifically to medium- and heavy-duty trucks weighing 8,500 pounds or more. Under the mandate, every new truck sold in California will be zero-emission by 2045, according to CARB. It further states that by 2035 the state will have an all zero-emission short-haul drayage fleet in ports and railyards, and that by 2040 there will be zero-emission “last-mile” delivery trucks and vans."   https://www.engadget.com/california-push-for-zeroemissions-heavy-trucks-032143253.html   FIRST EUROPEAN POLESTAR 2 CUSTOMER VEHICLES ARRIVE IN ZEEBRUGGE PORT The first shipment of Polestar 2 customer vehicles has arrived in Europe. The Belgian transport hub in Zeebrugge received the shipment which is awaited in anticipation by thousands of new Polestar owners. Vehicles for customers in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK are following closely behind as delivery ramps up to meet customer demand. Deliveries to customers in Switzerland will take place later in 2020.n Sweden and Norway. Handovers are scheduled for August. The 300 kW all-wheel drive powertrain has a large 78 kWh battery pack that will enable a targeted range of 500 km (310 miles) and a dynamic drive. The car features a suite of driver aids, including the highly advanced Pilot Assist, helping to ensure that the high-performance drive is also a safe one. The panoramic roof keeps the cabin light and airy, while pixel headlights provide maximum illumination at all times.   Norway - NOK 469,000 European Countries ~EUR 58,800 United Kingdom - £49,900   ENTRY-LEVEL KIA E-NIRO NOW ON SALE IN THE UK Up until now, the e-Niro has been available in a single, high specification model, but that now changes with an expansion of the line-up to include three feature rich versions named ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘4+’. For the first time the 39kWh battery pack will be available to UK buyers.  The battery is capable of travelling up to 180 miles on a single charge. Available on the ‘2’ specification, the newcomer is priced at just £29,595, after the Plug-in Car Grant has been deducted (£32,595 without). It joins a pair of high specification models in ‘3’ and ‘4+’ grades that feature the high-powered 64kWh battery pack. A driving range of more than 282 miles on a single charge is possible, with the ‘+’ moniker symbolising that it incorporates an AC 11kW three-phase charger as standard, the first time that it has been offered on the e-Niro.   ‘2’ 39kWh £29,595 ‘3’ 64kWh £33,850 ‘4+’ 64kWh £36,145   NISSAN ARIYA TO BE UNVEILED ON JULY 15, 2020 "Nissan announced that the production version of its next-generation all-electric model, the Ariya, will be unveiled on July 15, 2020 in Yokohama, Japan. The Nissan Ariya Concept was shown at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, hinting at a new dual-motor all-wheel-drive platform for the entire Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance." says InsideEVs: "For Nissan, it's a very important new model, which will be key to returning to the EV game, as the Nissan LEAF is no longer a top player these days."   https://insideevs.com/news/430687/nissan-ariya-unveiling-july-15-2020/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles   CADILLAC LYRIQ EV DEBUTS AUGUST 6 "We should’ve seen the Cadillac Lyriq by now. The automaker’s first fully-electric crossover was originally slated to debut on April 2 in Los Angeles, but coronavirus brought those plans to a screeching halt. Now – conveniently timed on the same day as Ford’s new F-150 debut – Cadillac wants us to know the Lyriq will arrive on August 6." according to Motor1: "It’s important to remind everyone that the Lyriq is technically a concept vehicle. Cadillac describes it as “not a concept but a precursor,” but the takeaway is the same. When the Lyriq finally breaks cover in August, it still won’t be the EV Cadillac you can buy in dealerships."   https://www.motor1.com/news/430832/cadillac-lyriq-ev-crossover-debut-august/   VW TRADEMARKS 'E-SAMBA' IN EUROPE "We first saw the ID. Buzz concept a few years ago, and have since been eagerly awaiting a production version, which we expect in 2022. We don’t yet have an official name for that production vehicle, but the folks at VW ID Talk forum may have uncovered a clue. VW has filed for the “e-Samba” trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office."So the “e-Samba” trademark could be the name of the new electric van. Or — and this is what we’re hoping for — it could be the name of a variant of the upcoming vehicle, perhaps one with a ton of extra glass or some other features to help capture the spirit of the original. It’s also possible VW doesn’t have specific plans to use the name yet."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/25/volkswagen-e-samba-trademark-id-buzz/   BMW HAS INTERNAL PRESSURE TO BUILD ELECTRIC-ONLY PLATFORM "BMW is getting some internal pressure to build an electric-only platform and move away from the strategy to build cars with several different powertrain options on the same platform. In 2018, the German automaker unveiled its fifth-generation electric powertrain technology, which is first going to be used in the iX3 electric SUV. At that point, BMW hadn’t released a new all-electric vehicle in five years, and now two years later, the automaker has yet to bring another one to market." writes electrek: "However, we now learn that BMW is seeing a push internally to build a dedicated EV platform.  Manfred Schoch, chairman of the BMW Group Works Council, told Der Spiegel that the German automaker needs its own electric-only platform. Autocar is reporting that a 3 series electric is being tested as well with release expected in the 2023ish time frame. Will it be too late to challenge the Model 3 at that point?"   https://electrek.co/2020/06/26/bmw-internal-pressure-build-electric-only-platform/   TESLA SEMI JOINS DELIVERY TEAM "2Q 2020 is a challenging quarter for Tesla because the Fremont factory was temporary halted the production over a month due to the COVID-19. Nevertheless, seems like Tesla will show high rates that will surprise us because now Semi has joined the delivery team to bring vehicles from Fremont for the quarter-end push." says Tesmanian: "Twitter user @emanueIreyes posted photos demonstrating that Tesla electric trucks are loading up Tesla cars in Fremont. These impressive shots demonstrate that Semi is ready for full functionality. Despite the global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Tesla maintains stronger-than-expected supplies thanks to, among other things, the dynamics of the Chinese market, which began to recover rapidly after the first quarter."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-semi-joins-delivery-team-to-bring-vehicles-from-fremont-for-the-quarter-end-push   HOW MANY CARS WILL TESLA DELIVER IN Q2 2020? PREDICTIONS ARE LOOKING UP "with the quarter coming to a close, Tesla cancels people's U.S. deliveries if they live far away from the Fremont factory, and instead delivers the cars to local buyers. This speeds up the process and allows the automaker to sell more vehicles before the quarter ends. However, it also means that paid reservation holders on the east coast are now waiting longer for a car." says InsideEVs: "Wall Street is predicting a 25% year-over-year drop related to Tesla's Q2 2020 deliveries. Analysts are forecasting 60,000 to 70,000 copies moved. However, Electrek reported that sources are saying the automaker could shock the world with a much higher number. The publication goes so far as to say Tesla may even be able to come close to beating its previous Q2 record of 95,000 deliveries."   https://insideevs.com/news/430969/tesla-record-delivieries-q2-2020-beat-wall-street/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How would you like to see Green Plates or Green Stickers used to incentivize EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #783   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th May 2020. TESLA GIGAFACTORY 1 COULD GROW AS PARTNER PANASONIC REPORTS MORE PROFITS "Not only did Tesla pull a profit in the first quarter of 2020, but its battery partner Panasonic said on Monday its battery business recorded earnings in the black, too, for the second time. Now, Gigafactory 1, based in Nevada, could see an expansion." says Roadshow by CNET: "Panasonic Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda specifically said the company was "in discussions right now" to expand work at the facility. Although the company is no longer Tesla's exclusive battery provider (the company works with LG Chem in China), the partnership has blossomed in recent years and recorded two profitable quarters. Umeda mentioned demand is beyond the current capacity of 35 gigawatts per year."   And from that Reuters report, they say: "Umeda hinted that Panasonic has been developing new batteries with Tesla. “We will be working to improve materials and technologies throughout this financial year,” he said. The Tesla battery business provided a bright spot in Panasonic’s otherwise grim earnings, hit by plant closures and supply chain disruptions for its laptops, washing machines, automotive components and factory equipment. Panasonic has decided to exit solar cell production at Tesla’s New York plant this year. It also decided not to build a new battery plant for Tesla in China. The U.S. car maker has entered into partnerships with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd (051910.KS) and China’s CATL"   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-nevada-reopen-production-elon-musk   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results-idUSKBN22U0MF   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TO FALL 18% IN 2020 "Sales of electric passenger vehicles are forecast to fall 18% in 2020, to 1.7 million worldwide – with the coronavirus crisis interrupting ten successive years of strong growth." according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance: "However, sales of combustion engine cars are set to drop even faster this year (by 23%), and the long-term electrification of transport is projected to accelerate in the years ahead.  BNEF’s analysis suggests that global sales of internal combustion engine, or ICE, cars peaked in 2017 and will continue their long-term decline after a temporary post-crisis recovery. For the first time, BNEF sees overall new passenger vehicle sales peaking in 2036 as changing global demographics, increasing urbanization and more shared mobility outweigh the effects of economic development – though the fleet size keeps growing. Electric models are seen accounting for 3% of global car sales in 2020, rising to 7% in 2023, at some 5.4 million units."   https://bnef.turtl.co/story/evo-2020/   AS COVID-19 HITS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SOME THRIVE, OTHERS DIE And quoting the BNEF report, Bloomberg today looked at which countries will drive EV adoption: "The pandemic ravaged economy is expected to give electric vehicles a boost in China, Europe and countries committed to sparking battery power via financial stimulus and infrastructure spending, In the U.S., electric vehicles sales will shrink to just 1.7% of the personal auto market in 2021. At the same time, the sector will swell to 8.1% of all sales in China, which accounts for the largest share of global EV sales, and 5% of those in Europe, the BNEF report says."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-19/as-covid-19-hits-electric-vehicles-some-thrive-others-die?sref=W369vOBR   VW PARKS CARS WHEREVER THEY GO In an article translated (Google translate!) from German: "Volkswagen , the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, they are currently mainly occupied with parking. The group has had difficulties with software development for quite some time - the electric car ID.3 is therefore pre-produced without a complete operating system, in the hope that the software will be added later when it is finally ready. In the meantime, thousands of ID.3s are parked as soulless cases, partly on the premises of the VW factory in Zwickau, as shown here, partly in a huge parking lot in Saxony, which VW does not like to show to the public. But now the car manufacturer could soon run out of space: Because not only does VW have software problems with the production of the ID.3, but recently also with the good old Golf. Delivery of the Golf 8 had to be stopped because the emergency assistant was not working.  Nevertheless, the company wants to continue producing the Golf 8 and simply, exactly, park thousands of cars somewhere until this pretty embarrassing software problem is solved."   https://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaft/vw-golf-software-problem-1.4911260   2020 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E REVIEW – THE NEW BEST BUY "Because the X5 is one of the best-selling cars it has on sale today and keeping the fleet’s CO2 emissions in check is a tricky ordeal. A hybrid will definitely help out with that, especially considering the tax systems in various countries around the world." says BMWBlog: "The new BMW X5 xDrive45e came with a host of improvements compared to its predecessor. t low speeds it does emit a hum to warn pedestrians, but it would still cause a couple of frowns from people as they probably had no idea BMW has an X5 hybrid.   Whereas the old hybrid X5 had a 9.2 kWh battery, the new one can store more than 2.5 times that, being rated for 24 kWh out of which you can use 21 kWh. So that’s a big hike, even though the physical size of the battery didn’t change that much. Keep the pedal glued to the floor and speed just keeps ticking up. This car picks up speed at an alarming rate. It may be a hybrid, 2.5-ton monster but it can move. 0-62 takes just 5.6 seconds and you’ll go all the way up to 250 km/h (155 mph) if you dare."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/18/2020-bmw-x5-xdrive45e-review/   HYUNDAI MOTOR’S EVS A POPULAR CHOICE IN POLICE FLEETS AROUND EUROPE "A growing number of police forces around Europe are turning to Hyundai EVs to use in their fleets. Amid growing concerns about inner-city air pollution, zero-emission vehicles such as battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell electric (FCEV) vehicles present an attractive solution for police officers’ mobility needs." says Automotiveworld.com: "Hyundai’s best-selling all-electric SUV Kona Electric is a popular choice for police forces in countries like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. A year ago, the police force of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland added 13 Kona Electric models to their fleet – five as police cars and eight as civilian vehicles.  In the Netherlands, police forces in Amsterdam, East Netherlands and Central Netherlands are also testing Kona Electric’s suitability as a police cruiser. Its long driving range and fast charging make it an attractive choice for police use. Kona Electrics can be found in the police fleets in Valencia, Spain, in both the 39 kWh and 64 kWh editions. And in the U.K., Sussex Police and North Wales Police already have one Kona Electric each in their fleets. Additionally, Hampshire Police have ordered nine Kona Electric models for their fleet, which will be delivered early next month."   https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/hyundai-motors-evs-a-popular-choice-in-police-fleets-around-europe/   KIA E-NIRO VS KIA SOUL EV "Now, though, there's an all-new Soul EV, which uses the same 64kWh battery and 201bhp electric motor as its e-Niro sibling. And that raises an important question if you like the idea of a fully electric family SUV: which one is better?" asks WhatCar? "If the moment does take you, you can hustle both cars down a country road at a reasonable lick, but we’d describe their handling as tidy rather than fun. Of the two, it's the e-Niro that's more agile, because it leans less than the taller, marginally more top-heavy-feeling Soul, plus its steering reacts more naturally; the Soul's is quicker but not as progressively weighted, and that takes a bit of getting used to."   https://www.whatcar.com/news/kia-e-niro-vs-kia-soul-ev/n21450   MITSUBISHI EXTENDS 10,000 FREE ELECTRIC MILES OFFER ON OUTLANDER PHEV "Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has extended its 10,000 Free Green Miles offer for Outlander PHEV buyers until September. Offered in partnership with OVO Energy, the incentive provides drivers of the plug-in hybrid SUV with 10,000 miles worth of free electricity." according to AM Online "Customers will receive a £20.40 credit in their OVO account each month, for 24 months. The deal also includes Polar Plus membership, so Outlander PHEV drivers can charge away from home for free."   https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2020/05/19/mitsubishi-offers-10-000-free-electric-miles-with-outlander-phev   WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES, BRAND REPUTATION IS NOT A SURE THING "When the topic turns to brand reputation and electric vehicles, the case seems easy enough. Zero emission cars make an important contribution to decarbonization, and that reflects nicely on the auto companies who produce them. However, even the simplest of brand calculations can take an unexpected turn when politics are involved." writes TriplePundit: "Officials in Alameda County, California, had been working with Tesla on a May 18 reopening plan for its Fremont facility, but Musk launched a ferocious attack on Twitter demanding an earlier opening. The result was a blinding blitz of free publicity, during which Musk restarted his factory in Fremont, California days before Ford and GM were set to open. If the idea was to re-assert Tesla’s image as a maverick bucking the entrenched industry tide and bureaucrats alike, Musk certainly succeeded on that score. Last week the president tweeted his approval of Musk’s tactics over the Fremont opening, writing that “California should let Tesla & @elonmusk open the plant, NOW. It can be done Fast & Safely!” If things continue in this vein, it seems that Musk may accomplish the seemingly impossible task of turning Trump voters into Tesla buyers."   https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2020/electric-vehicles-brand-reputation-not-sure-thing/120316     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? Show #759   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 25th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   TESLA ROLLS OUT AUTOPILOT NAVIGATION FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS "Tesla has been developing Autopilot navigation for traffic lights and stop signs for quite some time, and now the feature is finally ready for the public. According to Electrek, the automaker has released a Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control feature for its Autopilot technology as part of the 2020.12.6 software update." says Yahoo News: "The update’s release note says the feature, which is still in beta, will give Tesla vehicles the power to recognize traffic lights even when they’re off and to automatically slow down at intersections. Drivers will get notification when the car intends to slow down, and the vehicle will stop at the red line shown on the onscreen driving visual. They’ll then have to push down the gear selector or press the accelerator to confirm that it’s safe to proceed."   https://news.yahoo.com/tesla-traffic-light-stop-sign-autopilot-183724262.html   TESLA PATENTS A NEW NCA ELECTRODE FOR ITS EV BATTERIES "Tesla has patented a new type of electrode to be used inside of the battery cells that builds in house. The goal of the new battery electrodes is to be longer-lasting and cheaper to produce. The new NCA electrode in the patent is expected to be used in those battery cells." according to TweakTown.com: "Tesla previously patented an electrode using a new generation "single-crystal" NMC 532 cathode and a new advanced electrolyte. The team was able to show over 4000 cycles in battery cells made using the novel cathode. Tesla believes that the battery cells could last for over a million miles when used in electric vehicles."   https://www.tweaktown.com/news/72046/tesla-patents-new-nca-electrode-for-its-ev-batteries/index.html   TESLA MODEL 3 CONFIGURATION IN CHINA EXPANDS WITH MORE INTERIOR OPTIONS "Tesla China has released the white seating option for its Model 3. Previously, the electric sedan was only available with black seats for Chinese buyers." reports Teslartati: "Tesla officially made its white seating option available on April 23. The upgrade costs ¥8,000, or USD 1,132. The price of the upgrade is roughly the same as what’s priced in the U.S. at $1,000. The interior option is available for all three of the MIC Model 3 configurations: the Rear-Wheel Drive Standard Range+, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Performance."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-made-in-china-model-3-white-interior-option/   EUROPE BEATS CHINA IN EV SALES, STUDY SHOWS "Europe's five largest automotive markets edged past China in electric vehicle registrations in the first quarter of 2020, as China battled the outbreak of the coronavirus and imposed shutdowns countrywide, according to a study by PwC and its strategy consulting subsidiary Strategy&." according to Automotive News Europe: "Germany, France, the UK Italy and Spain collectively registered 79,300 full-electric vehicles between January and March, narrowly edging past the 77,256 in China, the study found. Unit sales more than doubled in Europe in that period, compared with the first quarter of 2019. In China, sales fell by more than half in the quarter because of the lockdown. Across Europe, Renault's Zoe is by far the best-selling battery-powered vehicle, ahead of the Peugeot 208 EV and Volkswagen eGolf, while Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV was the best-selling plug-in hybrid"   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/europe-beats-china-ev-sales-study-shows   AUDI QUIETLY ADDS E-TRON SPORTBACK TO AUSTRALIA WEBSITE "Audi Australia has quietly added the e-tron Sportback to its website, confirming not only its planned released for the Australian market but also numerous specifications. The addition of the e-tron Sportback to the Audi Australia website confirms the low profile electric vehicle will be (as with the e-tron SUV) offered in two variants, the 50 quattro and 55 quattro." says The Driven: "The 50 quattro will offer a smaller 71kWh battery than its larger 55 quattro stablemate’s 95kWh pack. The 64kWh usable capacity from this pack will give it a driving range of more than 300km according to Audi Australia’s website. The 55 quattro sportback will be offered in two drivetrain options, with up to 446km driving range from its 86kWh usable capacity. "   https://thedriven.io/2020/04/24/audi-quietly-adds-e-tron-sportback-to-australia-website/   ELECTRIC SUPERMINI SHOOT-OUT "Battery-powered superminis make sense for daily urban use, and soon we’ll be spoiled for choice. We pit the Mini against the Peugeot e-208 and Renault Zoe" says Autocar: "The Renault’s range is truly impressive, plus it offers decent practicality. Yet it can’t match the other two for quality, refinement or driver appeal. And it feels less expensively engineered than its pair of rivals, which would be fine if it didn’t cost more than them to buy. Less expensive versions of the Zoe make more sense than this GT Line. The Cooper S feels like nothing less than a premium product, and for driving fun it’s head and shoulders above the rest, plus at £24,900 for the entry-level model it’s fractionally the most affordable. Yet it’s hamstrung by that range"   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/electric-supermini-shoot-out-mini-electric-vs-two-rivals   CASE 580 EV IS A NEW ALL-ELECTRIC BACKHOE LOADER CASE Construction Equipment introduces “Project Zeus” — the 580 EV (Electric Vehicle), the construction industry’s first fully electric backhoe loader. The power and performance of the 580 EV is equivalent to other diesel-powered backhoes in the CASE product line and provides considerably lower daily operating costs while also producing zero emissions — a motivating factor for utility and government contractors incentivized to work with equipment that leverages alternative fuels and lowers emissions. The 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged by any 220-volt/three-phase connection. While applications will vary, each charge will support most common eight-hour workdays. The battery separately powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors, resulting in hydraulic breakout forces equal to diesel-powered machines and improved performance during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation.   https://www.casece.com/northamerica/en-us/resources/articles/media-case-unveils-project-zeus-580ev-first-fully-electric-backhoe-loader     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Do you prefer to buy new or used EV? At times the leading group consisted of eight riders. The premiere had to be stopped after six laps after a crash by Lorenzo Savadori – among other things, the bike could not be recovered immediately after the accident because it had crashed into the track boundary. The next MotoE race will take place as part of the MotoGP race in Austria on 11 August."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/08/motoe-niki-tuuli-wins-first-electric-motorbike-race/   KIA SOUL EV PRICED AT £33,795 The new Kia Soul EV will be offered in one highly specified grade called ‘First Edition’ and is priced at £37,295, or £33,795 with the Plug-in Car Grant subsidy deducted. The first examples of the Soul EV ‘First Edition’ are scheduled to reach UK dealers during Q1 2020.   All-new Soul ‘EV’ available in one high-specification model ‘First Edition’ comes with two-tone paintwork as standard 64kWh lithium-ion battery gives a range of 280 miles from one charge 80 per cent charge can be achieved in as little as 1 hour 15 minutes Both Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ included as standard   https://insideevs.com/news/358488/kia-e-soul-first-edition-uk-33795/   MG ZS EV SEEN DC FAST CHARGING AT UP TO 85 KW "The MG ZS EV is another upcoming new electric car in Europe (actually, it's initially limited to the UK), which was seen at the Fastned DC fast charging station in the Netherlands." reports InsideEVs: "According to Michiel Barendse, who shared a photo, a Chinese test driver apprised him of a peak charging power of 85 kW (CCS Combo 2), a range of 270 km (168 miles) WLTP and an expected base price of €30,000 ($33,700)." That's from a 44.5kWh   https://insideevs.com/news/358449/mg-zs-ev-seen-dc-fast-charging/   REPORT: SK INNOVATION TO BEGIN MAKING NMC 811 CELLS IN Q3 2019 "SK Innovation, a major Korean battery maker, has announced it will begin using a state-of-the-art NMC 811 lithium-ion cell chemistry during the third quarter of this year, according to a report in a South Korean newspaper." as per electricrevs.com: "SK Innovation had previously announced it would begin the production of NMC 811 cells beginning in late 2018 and there was some speculation that those cells would be used in the 2019 Kia Niro EV. SK eventually supplied cells to Kia that are reportedly similar in characteristics to the NMC 622 cells that its competitor LG Chem supplies to Kia’s sibling brand Hyundai for their 2019 Kona Electric model. Kia is also using SK cells in its new 2020 Soul EV. All three EV models use the same basic battery pack layout and design as well as other powertrain components. It’s uncertain if this news means that Kia will now use these NMC 811 cells or if they will instead go towards other customers and uses such as stationary storage." "Lithium-ion cells are made using various different chemistries or mixtures of metals in the cathode (positive) side of the cell while the negative or anode side typically consists of graphite. The primary lithium-ion cell cathode chemistries used in the latest generation of electric vehicles are typically referred to as NCA (Nickel, Cobalt, Aluminum) which are used by Tesla or NMC (Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt) as used by most other electric car makers. NMC is also sometimes referred to as NCM. Some Chinese car and bus makers use a lithium-ion cathode chemistry based on iron phosphate that is less energy dense. Cobalt is much more expensive than Nickel or Manganese and is primarily sourced from a small number of mines."   https://electricrevs.com/2019/05/31/report-sk-innovation-to-begin-making-nmc-811-cells-in-q3-2019/     PORSCHE TAYCAN AT GOODWOOD Mark Webber drove the Taycan up the hill at Goodwood, he said: "“The Taycan’s power delivery is awesome,” reports the experienced Formula 1 driver. “I took part in this event in a Porsche 911 GT2 RS two years ago, so I already knew that it all comes down to power and traction. But, even for a thoroughbred racing driver like me, it is amazing how the Taycan — even though it’s still a prototype — accelerates off the start and out of the corners.”   TOYOTA DEBUTS A FULLY ELECTRIC TRANSPORTER "Toyota presents its new commercial vehicle strategy. The most important announcement from an EV perspective: In cooperation with PSA, Toyota will launch fully battery-electric versions of the Proace and Proace City in 2020 and 2021 respectively." says electrive: "         Since 2016, the Toyota Proace has been manufactured together with the Citroen Jumpy and Peugeot Expert at the PSA plant in Valenciennes, France. The Opel Zafira Life also adopts this technology. The quartet is based on PSA’s EMP2 platform and has nothing to do with other Toyota models."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/08/toyota-debuts-a-fully-electric-transporter/   VW says it needs to convince battery suppliers to invest in EVs   Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Although EV fast charging stations do not always require a grid upgrade, as station sizes and power rating increase, energy storage will become an important tool, offering load balancing and mitigating distribution grid upgrade costs. With more than 1,100 fast chargers in 34 states, EVgo electrified more than 75 million miles for electric vehicle drivers across the country in 2018."   https://www.petrolplaza.com/news/21700   STRICTER CO2 EMISSION STANDARDS FOR CARS AND VANS SIGNED OFF BY THE COUNCIL "The EU is making road transport cleaner by setting strict new carbon dioxide emissions standards for cars and light commercial vehicles. The aim of the regulation adopted by the Council today is to ensure that from 2030 onwards new cars will emit on average 37.5% less CO2 and new vans will emit on average 31% less CO2 compared to 2021 levels. Between 2025 and 2029, both cars and vans will be required to emit 15% less CO2. These are EU-wide fleet targets. More steel foundations appear to have been laid as well, and the framework of what seems to be a multi-story section is currently being built. This pace serves the project well, considering that Shanghai official Chen Mingbo has given the project a May 2019 target date for completion."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-general-assembly-building-roof-paving/   MG EZS ELECTRIC CAR COMING TO AUSTRALIA IN 2020 "MG Motor’s Australian factory distributor has confirmed it will launch a fully electric version of its increasingly popular petrol-fired ZS small SUV during the course of 2020." writes CarAdvice.com.au today: "The Mazda CX-3-sized MG eZS will give the company a rival for the just-launched Hyundai Kona Electric, the Hyundai Ioniq, and the Nissan Leaf in Australia’s fledgling EV market. It will be China’s first EV in Australia, and should be a bit of a marketing coup. The eZS has a 110kW/350Nm electric motor, powered by a 45.6kWh lithium battery pack, with a claimed NEDC driving range of 335km. That’s about 50 per cent less than the long-range Hyundai Kona with its larger 64kWh battery capacity, but thereabouts with the Leaf."   https://www.caradvice.com.au/747869/mg-ezs-electric-car-coming-to-australia-in-2020/   EV SCARE CAMPAIGN 'FLIES IN FACE OF FACT' Staying in Australia "A toxic scare campaign surrounding electric vehicles in the first week of the federal election campaign “flies in the face of fact” and risks seeing Australia fall even further behind the rest of the world, according to the chair of a senate inquiry into the technology." says website InnovationAus.com.au today: "Following the unveiling of Labor’s electric vehicle policy package, which included a target for half of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, a series of government ministers launched a widespread scare campaign against the policies. But Labor’s 50 percent target is just for new car sales, not used and second hand sales, and would lead to about 15 percent of Australia’s entire car fleet being electric by 2030." Prime Minister Scott Morrison: "“I’ll tell you what, it’s not going to tow your trailer. It’s not going to tow your boat. It’s not going to get you out to your favourite camping spot with your family,”   https://www.innovationaus.com/2019/04/EV-scare-campaign-flies-in-face-of-fact   ASTON MARTIN TESTS MARKET FOR HIGH-PRICED EVS WITH RAPIDE E Automotivenews Europe brings us: "Aston Martin is testing the market for very expensive full-electric cars with the Rapide E sedan, which was unveiled on Tuesday at the Shanghai auto show. Aston Martin will build just 155 units of the Rapid E, which will be the automaker's only battery-powered car until the UK automaker revives its Lagonda brand as an all-electric marque early next decade. The Rapid E's driving range of 322 km (200 miles) under Europe’s WLTP testing cycle is short compared with other EVs coming to the market. The upcoming Porsche Taycan has a 500-km (311-mile) range), for example. Aston Martin has countered the Rapide E’s limited range by equipping it with an 800-volt battery system that allows more rapid charging. The sedan can be charged to 80 percent of capacity from empty in 30 minutes. Andy Palmer said Aston Martin customers are not looking for blistering supercar performance, but they are "conscious about what Teslas can achieve."   https://europe.autonews.com/shanghai-auto-show/aston-martin-tests-market-high-priced-evs-rapide-e   IN QUEST FOR ELECTRIC SUPERCARS, ENGINEERS HEAD TO START-UPS Reuters has been tracking where high profile EV talent is going: "Rene-Christopher Wollmann, head of Mercedes-AMG’s 2.75 million euros (£2.38 million) Project One supercar programme, has moved to a job at Automobili Pininfarina in a sign that innovation in high end electric sportscars is shifting towards small start-ups." "Premium or high-performance electric sports cars are equivalent to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the conventional auto world. These so-called supercars can cost anything from about $100,000 up into the millions of dollars and include Tesla’s upcoming Roadster Founder Series, which will sell for over $200,000 and the Rimac Concept Two, priced in the region of $2 million. The emerging role of start-ups in the development of the premium electric market harks back to an era over a century ago when talented engineers like Gottlieb Daimler and Ferdinand Porsche were able to launch sportscar brands on modest budgets."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-supercar-startups-focus/in-quest-for-electric-supercars-engineers-head-to-start-ups-idUKKCN1RR0GD   IRELAND: ELECTRIFI REBUILDS ELECTRIC CARS WITH TESLA PARTS "The Irish startup Electrifi is investing 50 million euros over the next three years to convert classic luxury cars into electric vehicles using Tesla components. Yet, Electrifi is working on a range of more affordable electric cars for 2020 as well." writes Nora Manthey for electrive.com: "Electrifi though is starting small and will concentrate on converting the most high-end cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin to electric vehicles using motors and batteries from Tesla. Prices will start at a Formula 1 worthy 750,000 euros"   https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/ireland-crowley-carbon-to-build-electric-cars-as-electrifi/   CAR MANUFACTURERS TURN TO ELECTRIFICATION TO TURN THE TIDE IN 2019, "car manufacturers are hoping to spur market development by turning to the electric vehicle market. Electric vehicle shipments are predicted to arrive at 5.15 million in 2019, reaching a YoY growth of 28%. YoY growth of new energy vehicles alone ( excluding hybrid electric vehicles) is expected to hit 51%." says Associated Press today: "Car makers are proactively carrying out development of electric vehicles and speeding up rollouts of new car models in anticipation of global energy-saving and emission-reducing trends, as well as the policies implemented by various countries. Car makers are leaning towards presenting electric vehicles as a brand new product series."   https://www.apnews.com/Business%20Wire/87a55d76420046869be349b89d0b80d0   PLUG AND PLAY: 1980 COMUTA-CAR And finally from BarnFinds.com: "Folks who like cars like this 1980 Comuta-Car are in a league of their own. I know because I’m one of them and I’m at least as unusual as these cars are. This one can be found here on craigslist in Nappanee, Indiana, just southeast of South Bend. The seller is asking $3,300 for this car. "The Comuta-Car, as most of you know, was an upgrade and continuation of the CitiCar with bigger, battery-filled bumpers both front and rear. The cute factor was all but gone once the bumpers became battery storage but at least you weren’t sitting on hoards of batteries under the seat and the range was extended a bit. Another upgrade would be the sliding side windows compared to the snap-out windows on the CitiCar. The seller says that this car has the 48-volt motor and it’s new, and also that it has 8 six-volt batteries so it must be the SV-48 model. A top speed of just under 40 mph and a 40-mile range isn’t much for either category but some owners have upgraded their CitiCars and Comuta-Cars to 1.5 to 2 times the range and 50+ mph"   https://barnfinds.com/plug-and-play-1980-comuta-car/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #429.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to two new patrons of the show. Welcome to CLIFF BATES and PRODUCER GEOFF GATES   KIA SOUL EV 2020 REVIEWS CNET says: ”As for the all-important driving range, the Soul EV is extremely competitive. The EPA officially rates the Soul EV at 243 miles of range, which bests the Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles), Kia Niro EV (239 miles) and Nissan Leaf Plus (226 miles). Only the Hyundai Kona Electric can go farther than the Soul, with its EPA-rated 258-mile range. Paddles on the steering wheel activate different levels of brake regeneration, with the maximum Level 3 offering for the sort of one-pedal EV driving characteristics that many people (myself included) love. That said, the Soul won't regeneratively brake to a complete stop like some other EVs, though if you press the Auto Hold button on the center console, you can let go of the brake when you're stationary."   Autocar were impressed by the tech: "Adaptive cruise control and lane following afford a useful amount of autonomy in heavy traffic, there’s an extensive suite of electronic safety systems, a head-up display and various features designed to maximise the battery pack. These include cooling and heating the 64kWh battery with liquid rather than air, while a button enables you to control heat or chill only the driver’s portion of the cabin if you’re one-up and need to eke. An in-built heat pump recovers waste heat from the coolant, while driving modes that include Eco and Eco Plus help. If you want one, your chief issue will be the wait – orders for the e-Niro stretch to 2020, and the Soul EV does not go on sale until late this year. But by that time, Kia’s plans to increase production of its EV powertrain may well have been realised."   Steve Fowler at AutoExpress: "We’re big fans of the Soul EV’s bigger brother, the eNiro, so it stands to reason that we’d love the similarly–powered new Soul, too. However, the Soul seems have a more youthful spirit and more character, in keeping with the car’s slightly smaller size and funkier design. And Kia hopes it will be cheaper than the eNiro. A lot can happen between now and when the first cars arrive at the end of the year, but Kia would like it if the first cars could come in at just under £30,000 including the current government EV incentive."   LIGHTNING INTRODUCES THE ALL-NEW $13K STRIKE "After two months of teasing, Lightning Motorcycles has finally lifted the veil off the all-new Strike, its long-range, low-price model." Says Sabrina at RideApart.com: "Lightning announced that the model will be available with three battery options. The entry-level “Strike Standard” receives a 10kWh battery with an estimated range of 70 miles on the highway and 100 miles in the city—this is the model the manufacturer has been announcing at the highly appealing price point of $12,998. The “Strike Mid-Range” is powered by a 15 kWh battery able to power the vehicle on 105 highway miles and 150 city miles. This version of the Strike has been priced at $16,998. Last but not least is the long-range “Strike Carbon Edition” which 20 kWh battery allows the bike to travel up to the much-advertised 200 miles in the city—this version is offered at $19,998. It isn’t the under-$13k price Lightning has been teasing for two months, but it is still a lot more affordable than a number of electric motorcycles currently on the market.Lightning is expected to start rolling the first Strikes out of production in July 2019 in the United States, starting with the top of the line Strike Carbon Edition. The company will announce its plan for international expansion later this year."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/315837/lightning-strike-electric-motorcycle-launch/   10,000 ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN NORWAY THIS MONTH: HALF ARE TESLA "According to the latest registration data (as of the end of March 28, 2019), new all-electric car registrations in Norway already reached 10,000 for the month (probably including a three-digit number of imported used BEVs). The official results will be announced inthe first days of April, but it’s already certain that we are watching a groundbreaking record of records." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The biggest splash in March was done by Tesla, which reportedly noted 5,000 registrations, including over 4,500 Tesla Model 3. It was just 4,000 recently! With many new compelling plug-in models on the horizon, Norway could be just a year or two from almost entirely switching to electric cars."   https://insideevs.com/10000-bev-registered-norway-half-tesla/   PROGRESSIVE BRAKES ADDED TO MODEL 3 New release notes for Model 3 in Europe: "If you are driving over 50 km/h and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down,” reads the description for Tesla’s Dynamic Brake Lights feature. In addition to flashing the tail lights in situations that call for unexpected heavy braking, the vehicle will also flash its hazard lights. If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off."   PORSCHE TAYCAN ENTERS FINAL TESTING PHASE AHEAD OF SEPTEMBER REVEAL Simon at Teslarati has the lowdown on the final testing stages of the Porsche Taycan: "Porsche engineers are currently taking advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere to test the Taycan’s driving dynamics in warm temperatures. At the same time, teams from the company are also testing the vehicle in Scandinavia, just a few miles away from the Arctic Circle, to evaluate the electric car’s performance in frigid temperatures. Porsche notes that the Taycan’s testing spans 30 countries, in temperatures that range from -35 to 50 degree Celcius (-31F to 122F). Porsche initially plans to start the Taycan’s production at 20,000 units per year, though positive reception from reservation holders have encouraged the company to raise its estimates for the all-electric car’s manufacturing. The Taycan will be capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds and have a range of over 300 miles on one charge. The all-electric car is designed to support 350 kW charging, making it possible to replenish over 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes."   The most significant facts from the Taycan testing phase:   Overall distance covered: Approximately six million kilometres, of which two million were endurance run kilometres Countries: A total of 30, including the USA, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Finland Temperatures: From minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius Air humidity: From 20 to 100 per cent Altitude: From 85 metres below to 3,000 metres above sea level Charging cycles: Over 100,000 using various charging technologies across the globe Development team: Around 1,000 test drivers, technicians and engineers   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-model-3-estimates-excessive-negativity/   EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH FORD’S CHIEF OF ELECTRIFICATION Bradley at InsideEvs.com has been talking to Ford's Ted Cannis. "Cannis confirmed that Ford’s crossover EV will have at least 300 miles of range in E.P.A. testing, but he declined to commit to target numbers for horsepower or acceleration. Cannis said that “most interest from consumers [for EVs] is in performance vehicles.” When asked how Ford is striking the balance between power and driving range, he conveniently replied, “We will not sacrifice either. The company will continue to include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure EV in its electrification portfolio. For regions and specific customers not wanting to go “cold turkey” (as he put it) on combustion, hybrids with and without a plug will serve their needs. Talks with Volkswagen about sharing EV platforms and tech are focused on filling in gaps in overseas markets. “We’re looking at efficiencies around the world so we can get more scale,” he said. Cannis mentioned the impact of local incentives on EV adoption.”   https://insideevs.com/interview-ford-chief-electrification/   NISSAN COMPLETES SALE OF BATTERY BUSINESS TO ENVISION GROUP Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has completed the previously announced sale of its electric battery operations and production facilities to Envision Group, a world-leading digital energy company. Under the deal, Envision has completed the acquisition of Nissan subsidiary Automotive Energy Supply Corporation and battery manufacturing operations in Smyrna, Tennessee, owned by Nissan North America Inc. (NNA), and in Sunderland, England, owned by Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. (NMUK).   Envision has also acquired Nissan’s Japanese battery development and production engineering operations located in Oppama, Atsugi and Zama.   The workforce at all facilities covered by the deal will continue to be employed. The headquarters and development centers of the business will remain in Japan.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. That’s the conclusion of research by used car website AA Cars, which surveyed more than 22,000 drivers." says James Fossdyke for motor1.com: "The poll revealed that 50 percent of motorists wanted to change their driving habits in some way, with many making changes to their driving habits. Almost one in five (17 percent) said they planned to use their car less, saying they wanted to ditch their wheels for journeys where they could walk or cycle. And around one in 10 (nine percent) said they planned to buy an electric or hybrid car in the coming months."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/302112/drivers-plan-go-eco-friendly/   VOLKSWAGEN WILL PRODUCE ITS OWN CAR BATTERIES "Volkswagen's been trying to claw back its credibility with an ambitious commitment to EVs ever since its $18.2 billion dollar emissions scandal. Its lofty production goals aside, the German manufacturer's latest green move could see it kickstart Europe's car battery industry." according to Engadget: "In back-to-back announcements, VW said today that it will start building car batteries -- as well as recycling old cells -- and mobile EV charging stations (which are heading to the streets of its hometown of Wolfsburg in the first half of this year). VW is promising to pump $870 million (£754 million) into the venture by 2020. VW says: "The changeover from conventional powertrains to e-mobility is an issue that is more important for Group Components than for any other unit of the Volkswagen Group, as the new brand produced more than 10 million conventional vehicle engines and over 8 million gearboxes, for example, in 2018. Battery systems are being developed and produced at the Brunswick components plant – in future the production portfolio will include batteries for MEB vehicles of various Group brands. When batteries reach the end of their service lives in vehicles, some of them will be transferred to other applications – for example in new products such as the flexible fast charging station."   https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-group-components-well-positioned-for-the-future-4599   2019 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC GETS PRICE INCREASE "Just a week ago, Hyundai began selling its 2019 IONIQ Electric in other CARB states, rather than just California. According to a recent story by CarsDirect, within three days of the sales expansion, the automaker bumped up the EV’s price by more than $500." says Stephen Loveday at InsideEVs.com: "This price increase makes the IONIQ Electric more expensive that its top rival, the 2019 Nissan LEAF. The LEAF starts at $29,990, plus an $895 destination charge. This puts it at $30,885, which is $350 less than the Hyundai. The IONIQ Electric was priced at $30,700 in early January. Now, Hyundai has increased its MSRP to $31,235."   https://insideevs.com/2019-hyundai-ioniq-electric-price-increase/   TESLA APPLIES FOR SERIES OF PATENTS FOR NEW AI CHIP IN AUTOPILOT HARDWARE 3.0 "Tesla is working on an important new product that it claims will enable them to bring full self-driving capability to its vehicles: a new AI chip, or “neural net accelerator’, to be released in the Autopilot Hardware 3.0 computer upgrade." according to Fred Lambert at Electrek: "We have now uncovered a series of new patent applications from Tesla about this new computer. As previously reported, Tesla hired a team of chip architects and executives from AMD back in 2016 and they are now led by former Apple chip architect Peter Bannon to deliver the new computer to power Tesla’s self-driving system." One of the comments from Preston Crow details why he thinks this patent has now been filed: "This indicates that they are about to start shipping the new computer. Once you start shipping, there's a limit on how long you can wait to file a patent on the technology. In some places it's six months, in some places it's a year." Also remember the middle of next week is the Q4 earnings call. Some things are a coincidence, others are done for a reason. I'll be listening closely next week for any mention of their neural net.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/25/teslaf-patents-ai-chip-autopilot-hardware-3-0/   BOSCH BUYS OUT DAIMLER'S STAKE IN ELECTRIC MOTOR JOINT VENTURE The German auto parts maker Bosch announced today that it had exercised an option in their agreement to buy out Daimler from a joint project EM-Motive. EM-Motive makes the motors which power EVs, and not just Daimlers. A Thomson Reuters report said: "EM-Motive, which currently supplies Daimler, Porsche, Fiat, Volvo, Peugeot and start-up carmaker Streetscooter with electric motors, wants to keep targeting new customers, Bosch said. Daimler said EM-Motive will remain a supplier and that it continues to source electric motors from a number of suppliers worldwide. Daimler workers have campaigned to bring development and production of electric motors in-house, ending the German carmaker's reliance on external suppliers."   (Reporting by Edward Taylor; Editing by Douglas Busvine and Elaine Hardcastle)   https://www.usnews.com/news/technology/articles/2019-01-24/bosch-buys-out-daimlers-stake-in-electric-motor-joint-venture   https://electrek.co/2019/01/24/strike-electric-motorcycle-pre-order/   ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE FIELDS GROWS I really love the videos made by Micah Toll for his YouTube channel 'E Bike School' and also his recent articles joining Electrek is a contributor. In an article today about Lightning Motorcycles on Electrek, they say: "With impressive specs including a 150 mph (241 km/h) top speed, 150 mile (242 km) range, 35 minute DC fast charging and a base price of just $12,998, the Lightning Strike received praise far and wide despite the only image of the bike being its front headlights." And in a surprise move, the company announced today they'll start taking orders with just a $500 deposit. So Electrek took a look at the other EV bike makers out there: "Italian company Energica has been producing electric sports bikes for years, with a number of high performance 150+ mph models. Harley Davidson’s electric LiveWire has also just begun pre-sales, though the price was set at a whopping $29,799. The upcoming Zero SR/F is still largely a mystery, but could likely be a direct competitor to the Lightning Strike. New York-based Tarform is also working on an electric motorcycle that could compete in a similar class to the Lightning Strike."   Follow Micah @MicahToll   https://electrek.co/2019/01/24/strike-electric-motorcycle-pre-order/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can you help me fight the fossils? Read more about Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 9th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new Producer of the podcast ANDY HALL thank you being part of the Patreon family.   NISSAN LEAF E+ BRINGS MORE POWER, MORE RANGE So by now you may have seen the news online the long awaited Nissan LEAF has a new longer range variant. Well, it will do later in 2019 when you can finally get one. Here's everything I’ve been able to dig up for you, and some of my thoughts based on the first 12 hours of reaction. Let's start with what the same, everything you can see! Exterior will have a new badge and interior has an 8" screen rather than 7". You will charge it with CHAdeMO and not CCS. First up from InsideEVs, clarity on the name and when you can get one: "Nissan LEAF e+ is the global name for the car, but particularly in the U.S. and Canada, Nissan would like to name the top of the line version – the LEAF PLUS Series. There will be three trim levels: LEAF S PLUS, LEAF SV PLUS and LEAF SL PLUS. Market launch plan: Japan – January 2019, U.S. – Spring 2019 (pricing to be announced closer to on-sale date) Europe – Mid-2019. Battery - it's 62kWh not the 60kWh we were led to believe, or even the 64kWh assumed when rumours last year pointed towards them using LG Chem packs. "Even with a 25 percent increase in energy density and the increase in energy storage capacity, the LEAF e+ battery pack is almost the same size and configuration as the pack in the Nissan LEAF. Other than a 5-millimeter increase in overall height (16-inch wheels), the car’s exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged" says Nissan So that range is 226 miles (364 km) EPA range vs 151 miles (243 km) for the 40kW version. Nissan says: "Thanks to the available new 70 kW (100 kW peak) Quick Charging system, the 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ can charge more efficiently than ever.*3 Based on early testing, Nissan LEAF e+ owners can expect similar charging times when hooked up to a 100 kW charger as current LEAF owners do with a 50 kW charger, despite a 55 percent larger battery storage capacity.” Motor: the 160kW motor us up from 110kW, a 36% increase. They are drawing our attention to the 50mph-70mph difference.   Pricing: The base Nissan LEAF e+ will start from ¥4,162,320 (around $38,370). In the case of Europe, Nissan announced two Limited Edition versions for “old” and new version: LEAF 3.ZERO (40 kWh) – from €39,900 (orders now, deliveries from May). LEAF 3.ZERO e+ (62 kWh) – from €45,500 (orders now, deliveries from Summer).   If you add the same premium to US prices it should be ~$35k.   ZERO gets the bigger screen and phone mirroring, and colours. And it's available to order now.   Nissan says: "“The Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will also be available to order from January 9 across European markets. This limited edition – of which only 5,000 units will be produced for Europe – will feature a higher output capable of delivering 160 kW (217 PS) and longer range capabilities with expected driving range of up to 385 km* from a single charge."   Forbes says: "The battery continues to be supplied by AESC, Nissan’s in-house battery division that is in the process of being sold to China's Envison Group. Like all prior iterations of the Leaf it is still air-cooled, running contrary to the industry conventions. Also contrary to some earlier speculation, Nissan hasn't switched to LG Chem as a cell supplier."   https://insideevs.com/nissan-reveals-leaf-e-plus-ces/   https://insideevs.com/nissan-announces-leaf-e-price-europe-japan/   https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2019/01/08/2020-nissan-leaf-plus-crosses-the-200-mile-threshold/#341706836ece     MINI PLOTS MAIDEN HOT HATCH EV FOR 2019 REVEAL "Mini’s first electric car will also be the industry’s first electric hot hatch, engineering sources in Germany have revealed." says Mark Tisshaw for Autocar: "Rather than a sole focus on economy and eking out range, Mini is developing its electric car with performance in mind. To that end, the model will be badged Cooper S E when it is unveiled later this year to reflect its performance hierarchy in the Mini range. The BMW i3 S’s 181bhp electric motor is understood to be the most likely power source for the new Mini, meaning it will give little away to the 189bhp 2.0-litre engine of the Cooper S." The drivetrain won't include BMW's 5th generation technology though.   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mini-plots-maiden-hot-hatch-ev-2019-reveal   NINE IN 10 ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO PETROL "Almost nine in 10 electric vehicle drivers would never go back to driving a car powered by petrol or diesel, according to new research" reports Motor1.com: "A study by electric vehicle YouTube channel Fully Charged found that 88 percent of plug-in car drivers said they would definitely not switch back to fossil fuels after having owned an electric vehicle (EV). Seven percent of those quizzed said they were not sure whether they would turn back to internal combustion, while the remaining five percent said they would consider making a return to petrol- or diesel-powered cars. However, just under a quarter of the channel’s audience (24 percent) said they currently owned an electric car, with the vast majority (54 percent) claiming to own a petrol-powered vehicle. Diesel was the second most popular fuel, accounting for 35 percent of viewers, while a combined total of 11 percent were the owners of petrol hybrids or plug-in hybrids." With 7,700 taking part in the survey it's a large number.   https://uk.motor1.com/news/299997/ev-drivers-wont-return-petrol/   MERCEDES EQC GETS SAMPLED BY JAY LENO "Until it actually makes market debut, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz EQC gets the Jay Leno treatment." according to DriveMag: "Naturally, Mr. Leno drives an EQC 400 4Matic in prototype guise and for more background on the EV, he takes Bastian Schult (Powertrain Testing Engineer at Mercedes-Benz) for a ride. Now, you might already know that the EQC relies on an 80-kWh battery pack that allows for a max range of 280 miles (450 km) on a single charge, with power coming from two electric motors that make together 408 PS (300 kW)"   MERCEDES EQC ELECTRIC SUV TO COST FROM UNDER £50K IN THE UK? .."The new Mercedes EQC – Mercedes’ electric SUV aimed at the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron – looks set to cost from under £50k when it arrives in the UK." speculates CarsUK.net: "When Leno asked the Mercedes man how much the EQC would cost in the US, he didn’t have an answer. But he did say that in Europe it will cost about the same as the Mercedes GLC 43. Which, in the UK, starts at £48,960. If the Mercedes man is right, you’ll be able to grab an electric Mercedes SUV with 400bhp, 0-62mph in around 5.0 seconds, an 80kWh battery pack and a range of over 200 miles for £15k less than an I-Pace and £20k less than an e-tron."   http://www.carsuk.net/mercedes-eqc-electric-suv-to-cost-from-under-50k-in-the-uk/   FIRST AUDI E-TRON DELIVERIES IN GERMANY FEBRUARY Talking of the e-tron, Mark Kane at InsdeiEV's.com published a story today: "So far, several hundred cars were registered in the first few markets, but it turns out that customer deliveries will not happen this month. According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), first customers in Germany will get the e-tron in February. If Audi does not sort out its problems with the e-tron launch, it will be overtaken in Europe by Tesla Model 3, which also should hit the market in February."   https://insideevs.com/first-audi-e-tron-deliveries-germany-postponed/   TOYOTA PUSHES HYBRIDS DESPITE SLOWING GAS-ELECTRIC AUTO SALES "Don't tell Toyota the once hot gas-electric hybrid vehicle is losing its appeal." says CNBC: "The automaker is planning to leverage its dominance in hybrid autos as it grows the number of full- and hybrid-electric vehicles sold in the U.S. and around the world." Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota North America "We are working on an entire portfolio of hybrids which we have been selling since 1997, plug-in hybrids, full battery electric vehicles as well as our fuel cell vehicles. Those vehicles represent about 9 percent of our sales in 2018. We have set a goal that it will be 15% of our sales next year in 2020."   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Become a Patron!   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 6th August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, there’s an interview from two days ago on Saturday from CleanCar who log your journeys and then using fancy pants data, tell you which is the optimal EV for you. Please go back and download it if that would be of interest. Thank you SO MUCH to the first 11 Patreon Producers of this show. I really had no idea if anyone help be a part of the show. I’ll tell you more and thank them at the end. If you get any value at all out of this show, whether you learn something or it entertains you, I’ll give you those details at the end. I love free stuff, you love free stuff, this show will always be free, it’s totally optional and not something I want you to think about. But let’s start with the news…   EV CHARGERS FOR BIRMIGNHAM Alabama’s busiest airport is adding a new convenience for travellers with electric cars: free vehicle chargers. Officials say nine new chargers are being added in the parking deck at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Three of the chargers are in the hourly section, and six are in an area used for long-term parking" according to YellowHammerNews: "The new units resulted from a partnership between the Birmingham Airport Authority and Alabama Power Co.  A statement says Birmingham becomes the first passenger airport in the state with chargers for electric vehicles. The airport has more than 120 daily departures on five airlines."   EV FAST CHARGER RIBBON CUTTING August 7 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. "America’s Car Museum are proud to kick-off this first new electric vehicle fast charger at a car museum along the I-5 corridor as part of the West Coast Electric Highway. With historic vehicles dating back to early electric powered cars, today America’s Car Museum is bringing in a new generation of electric vehicles as it unveils the newest fast-charging station at the city’s entrance."   https://pluginamerica.org/event/ev-fast-charger-ribbon-cutting/   TOP 5 EV'S COMING BY 2020 Fred at Electrek has been making a list, and we all love a good Top 5. This time it's the Top 5 cars coming by 2020: "Electric cars that will either be affordable and/or that will disrupt entire segments or even the industry as a whole." "5: VW I.D. Concept - For now, the vehicle is only known as the VW I.D. Concept, but it might end up being called ‘Neo’. VW is planning to release a production version in 2020 based on the concept that they revealed in 2016." "4: Mercedes-Benz EQC - By the time the EQC comes out next year, there will be 3 or 4 all-electric options in its segment, which doesn’t make it very unique, but I think it will result in electric vehicles taking over a lot (maybe even most) market shares of premium SUVs." "3: Volvo all-electric XC40 - Not much is known about the vehicle just yet, but Volvo’s latest CUV platform was built from the ground up to support several types of powertrains – including an all-electric on." "2: Porsche Taycan - I especially like the Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E, for its potential to convince hardcore petrolheads, like many Porsche fanatics, of the advantages of going electric." "1: Tesla Roadster - Tesla is bringing back the Roadster with a new generation of the vehicle that launched the company over 10 years ago. The first production car to get a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds, quarter-mile under9 seconds, and a top speed of over 250 mph."   https://electrek.co/2018/08/04/5-most-exciting-electric-cars-2-years/     NISSAN THINKS MILD HYBRIDS WILL SOON BE OBSOLETE "Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi all have experience building hybrids and electric vehicles, so the alliance is well-positioned to introduce new models. Renault-Nissan advanced product planning manager Warwick Daly expects 35% of Nissan’s European sales to be electrified by 2025 with the goal for 20% of sales coming from plug-in hybrids by 2020." according to CarBuzz.com: "We want to stay ahead of the curve,” said Daly, adding his opinion that “the mild hybrid will start to become obsolete. Our electrification offer will change over time." Clearly, plug-ins and EVs will play a more significant role moving forward for Nissan. “The Leaf will play a bigger role,” Daly said, pointing out that the new car is selling at a 40% higher volume than the previous model. As SUVs grow in popularity, it only makes sense to give the Leaf an SUV sibling.   https://carbuzz.com/news/nissan-thinks-mild-hybrids-will-soon-be-obsolete     CENTRICA PLUGS INTO ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING SECTOR TO FUEL RECOVERY "Britain's biggest energy provider is taking its smart electricity drive on the road with the company’s first major investment in electric vehicle charging." says Jillian Ambrose, www.telegraph.co.uk: "In the coming days, the FTSE 100 owner of British Gas, is expected to unveil a multimillion-pound investment in a software company that already helps to power more than 200,000 drivers in the US and Europe. Sources close to Centrica said the investment in Israeli start-up Driivz will accelerate its “smart” energy system ambitions, from the home into the burgeoning market for electric vehicles."   https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/08/04/centrica-plugs-electric-car-charging-sector-fuel-recovery/     TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSOLD ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CARS COMBINED "Model 3 not only outsold particular models (all passenger cars except for maybe seven), but for example, it outsold all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars – ≈8,500 (SUVs excluded). Mercedes-Benz sold in total just 20,034 vehicles in July (down 22.7%)."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-outsold-all-mercedes-benz-cars-combined/     TESLA, THE MODEL 3... AND THE MARKET Enrique Dans from Forbes.com says: "The Tesla 3 may not be a car for the masses, but there are major savings to be made: tax breaks, fuel, maintenance and resale, along with advantages such as free parking and access to lanes for high occupancy vehicles. In short, households that cover more than 20,000 kilometers per year should think seriously about buying a Tesla Model 3. But if you’re considering buying an electric vehicle, any electric vehicle, and you find that the sales person is trying to put you off doing so and convincing you to buy a petrol car instead, ask yourself: why might that be?  If Tesla succeeds in holding onto the top spot this month in the hypercompetitive luxury car middle segment then we could be witnessing a tipping point: an extremely traditional market deeply attached to fossil fuel vehicles that’s beginning to realize that electric is not only cool but also makes a lot of sense. "   https://www.forbes.com/sites/enriquedans/2018/08/04/tesla-the-model-3-and-the-market/#6f0cb4e77edf   MORE MODEL 3 VINS "Correction: This batch (78580-81204) is ~100% dual motor, not ~88% as previously estimated. It appears that 12% of the VINs were skipped (invalid response for dual motor AND single motor), however, they have since been updated by Tesla."   "#Tesla registered 7,903 new #Model3 VINs. ~100% estimated to be dual motor. Highest VIN is 89107. https://t.co/OZqpp8nPjs   — Model 3 VINs (@Model3VINs) August 5, 2018   JAGUAR I-PACE TARGETING MERCEDES TAXIS IN GERMANY "Jaguar's I-Pace electric car has Germany's famous Mercedes-Benz taxis in its sights" writes Dominik Wilde for Motor1.com: "The British firm's debut battery-powered effort has delivered 10 of the crossovers to Munich's biggest taxi operator recently. Mercedes-Benz has much of the German Taxi market covered, with around 60 percent of the country's taxis being Mercedes, many of which are E-Classes that are roughly half the price of the Jaguar. A comparable Mercedes, the EQ C crossover, won't be launched until next year." "Jaguar's taxis are part of a plan by the city of Munich – which is the hometown of rival brand BMW –to reduce area pollution. Rides in the new cars will be subsidized by the city council too, with it paying 20 cents per kilometre travelled. Munich has one of the highest levels of pollution from diesel vehicles among German cities and could introduce bans on older cars."   https://www.motor1.com/news/261217/jaguar-i-pace-targeting-mercedes-taxis/     HYUNDAI REALISING AN ELECTRIC DREAM "Early demand for this Kona Electric is the highest of any new Hyundai ever introduced. Already the Korean firm is worried it might not even be able to keep up with that demand." an article by Nat Barnes in the Express Newspaper said today: "Very few Kona sales are expected to be the lesser 39kWh model though, and the monthly price difference of the 64kWh model will be minimal on a finance plan. "There is a smart regeneration mode, strangely found deep within the trip computer settings which uses the road gradient and traffic levels to automatically choose and adapt a setting for you. This latter mode sounds ideal but the reality is that on the road its constant second-guessing quickly becomes frustrating. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 27th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   FRIDAY FACTS "Chinas Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry to the tune of About 279,000 barrels of fuel a day and adds 9500 zero emision #EV buses every 5 weeks." From Greg Wester @gwestr "Tesla lets software engineers on the factory floor to join the line and turn wrenches so they can automate the work and retool the line for speed"   UPDATE ON KONA BATTERY CHARGING "Thanks for mentioning my recent Kona article on cleantechnica. The charging power info that you were not confident about is actually referenced (link through) in the article at the point where I make the 80 kW statement".   ...and my reply: "Hi Max,I think the confusion here is on the Hyundai press materials it says “when connected to a 100kW charger”. I wonder if everyone has seen that, assumed that’s the charge rate, and ran with it? If you search for “Hyundai Kona EV 100kW” which is what I did before that show, you get countless articles all saying it has 100kW charge speed. And if you want the 2hour video review from Bjorn Nyland, who had one from Hyundai for a test, he says he’s been told it will charge up to 100kW. So I think I’ve just heard that number a lot from people who also know a lot about it. But saying all that, I agree that you (and John) are working from the most reliable ‘first hand’ information. i.e. the engineers. I was wrong to trust those other sources. I’ve attached the datasheet from Hyundai North America which confirms the pack is 356v nominal. If it’s using the same LG Chem pack as the Bolt, the consensus  seems to be a configuration of 3.7V * 60Ah * 288 cells = 64kWh and 3.7V * 96 cell triplets = 355.2V. If the engineers were being specific with max current of 200amps, at that voltage, that’s 71.6kW which is in the ball park of the IONIQ. Also I have a feeling the maximum current you can put through the CCS connector is 200A.   JAGUAR DELAYS SOME I-PACE ALL-ELECTRIC SUV DELIVERIES Electrek says they have heard from some disappointed owners that some are seeing their deliveries being pushed back by several months. Fred Lambert says: "Dealers say it is due to “manufacturing issues” while Jaguar says it is “prioritizing” orders." "We contacted Jaguar over the issue and the automaker says that it still plans for customer production to start “late this summer”, but it confirmed that some customers are experiencing delays due to “prioritization”: “In some instances individual customers may have been informed of a delay regarding their order. This will be due to prioritisation of market specific orders to best meet the exceptional demand.”" "A source familiar with the matter told Electrek that Jaguar’s supply of Matrix LED headlights are actually limited and the company might be pushing orders of non-First Edition vehicles in order to focus on the First Edition vehicles which need to be 2019 model year."   https://electrek.co/2018/07/26/jaguar-i-pace-delay/     EV CONNECT CLOSES $8-MILLION FINANCING ROUND "EV Connect, a provider of charging solutions including a cloud-based network management platform, has closed an $8-million financing round, led by Ecosystem Integrity Fund" reports Charged EVs: "The company will use the new funds to accelerate the deployment of its EV Cloud management platform in the US, advance its integration with utility grid systems and expand into new global markets."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/ev-connect-closes-8-million-financing-round/   MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS ARRIVE IN THE UK In preparation for the launch of the new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which goes on sale in the UK on August 1, the first shipment of vehicles has arrived in the UK at Bristol’s Royal Portbury Docks, with more shipments set to dock in the following weeks" according to Electric Cars Report: "The new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been engineered to meet the latest emissions regulations and comfortably qualifies for the government plug-in car grant thanks to its WLTP emissions of 46g/km and EV range of 28 miles, while also attracting the lowest possible BIK rate of 13 percent." The first batch of 200 will soon be followed by another 2000.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/07/first-shipment-of-2019-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-arrives-in-the-uk/   DAIMLER TO BUILD BATTERY FACTORIES IN SINDELFINGEN, UNTERTUERKHEIM "Daimler AG on Wednesday said it will add battery manufacturing capabilities to its Mercedes-Benz plants in Sindelfingen and Untertuerkheim, as the carmaker seeks to transition from combustion to electric cars." reports an Autoblog article: "The battery deal is part of a 1.5 billion euro ($1.75 billion) transformation plan to retool Mercedes-Benz plants to build zero-emission and autonomous vehicles, the carmaker said."   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/07/25/daimler-battery-factory-sindelfingen-untertuerkheim-germany/?guccounter=1     BARBADOS EMBRACES EVS Crippled with public debt and dogged by rising oil prices, the island's new government wants to make its bus network electric, and eventually switch all government transport too." reports Reuters: "Increased state investment in electric buses would help upgrade transport systems, while cutting climate-changing emissions and paving the way for consumers to follow. Plug-in vehicles could also "piggy-back" on a push to inject more power into the grid from renewables like solar, wind and hydro. Costs are high, however, and on some islands, import duties for electric vehicles are higher than on combustion-engine cars."     COMMUNITY Battery On Board Stickers! Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 8th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   SWISS CHARGERS BY EVTEC PLUGGED INTO 60KWH NISSAN LEAF   EVTEC (@EVTECfastcharge) - First attempt successful: The #NISSAN LEAF charges with 102 kW. #EVTEC #CHAdeMO #Fastcharging #Electromobility   So it looks like what we talked about yesterday was true, a fast charging rate of 102 kW at the SoC (State-of-Charge) of 32 %. So that would be almost certain that it's the new Nissan LEAF unless they've worked out a way to charge the current 40Kwh battery at twice the speed it's rated at. And considering some owners of the new LEAF are getting 20-30kW on their second rapid charge due to temps, it would be surprising if this wasn't the 2019 model year LEAF. So a recap on the leaked specs, and none of this is official yet. 160kW motor will replace the current 110kW motor. 0-60mph or 0-100kmh will be between 6-7 seconds. The battery capacity will be 64kWh with 60kWh usable. And that should give you a range at least 225 miles, which the Thermal Management System will help with as well as helping with charge rates. The DC Fast Charger will be rated at 100kW and if it's in line with others you’ll be charging at 11kW at home. However, and here it comes, the price is one of the best things about the Nissan LEAF, and it won't be cheap. My prediction is £30,000 before any incentives, that's 34,000 Euro, $52,000 CAD or $40,000 USD.   @philroberts - That looks like a rebranded Delta Ultra charger that we offer, looks strange though as can’t see the Chademo holder in the centre and those units I’m pretty sure are only rated for 62.5kW at the moment on Chademo, I’ll ask the question. To be clear it will do 150kW on CCS just not sure it will do that on Chademo as the specs say 125A @500v (62.5kW) although I know the new Chademo spec is out for upto 400kW. That unit is 300A capable but think that’s only for two chargers at same time eg CCS & Chademo together.   WILL TESLA MODEL 3 DOUBLE THE SPEED OF MODEL S? "There’s a very interesting thread going on right now over at Tesla Motors Club Forum. It’s along the same lines as a recent article InsideEVs published about Model 3 Supercharging rates" reports George Bower: "based on a Tesla EPA document it looks like the Model 3 could be capable of a maximum charging current of 525 amps. as TMC member Zoomit points out, 116 kW is basically the limit of Gen 2 Superchargers. Perhaps we are seeing a charger limit and not a car limit. Maybe the Model 3 is actually capable of charging at HIGHER than 116 kW. If the Tesla Model 3 could hold this charge rate to 50% state of charge, it would imply 180 kW of charging power."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-shipping-model-3-with-2x-model-s-p100d-supercharging-c-rate/   TESLA OFFERS MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES FOR FIRST TIME Tesla started offering test drives of the Model 3 at four Bay Area locations: Dublin-Amador Plaza, Corte Madera, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Yesterday Tesla stareted offering Model 3 test drives at four more locations in the region: San Jose, Burlingame, San Francisco and Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. "The test drives are offered to people who have put down $1,000 deposits on the Model 3. A Tesla staffer will accompany drivers." says The Mercury News.   NEXT PEUGEOT 208 GTI TO GO ELECTRIC? Here's a story I first saw in AutoExpress and now it's in Evo.co.uk where Jordan Katsianis says: "The next Peugeot 208 GTi is likely to feature a pure electric drivetrain when it arrives in showrooms next year. As for the next 208 GTi, while the electric version may not immediately strike us as ideal hot hatch material, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t curious about what an all-electric Peugeot GTi might be like to drive."   UK EV SALES EXCEED 6,000 IN LAST MONTH Here in the UK it's still Plug In Hybrids which are surging ahead of pure BEVs. 1,519 BEVs (up 4% year-over-year) 4,753 PHEVs (up 54% year-over-year) Diesel sales were down -30% in the first half of the year   SEE VOLKSWAGEN'S I.D. R PIKES PEAK RUN FROM A HELICOPTER "This year Volkswagen took its all-electric I.D. R to Pikes Peak and took home the overall record. With Romain Dumas behind the wheel of this 671-hp all-electric race car, the VW managed to run the 12.42-mile circuit in only seven minutes and 57.148 seconds, which was 16 seconds faster than Sebastien Loeb’s 2013 record" according to Autoweek.com: "If you wanted to see what that run looked like, here’s your chance to take a bird’s-eye view. While this isn’t as mind-bending as watching Porsche’s 919 Evo shave a minute off the Nurburgring record, watching Dumas conquer Pikes Peak with only the whirr of electric motors is definitely a different experience."   RELAX, YOUR ELECTRIC CAR WON’T SHORT-CIRCUIT YOUR PACEMAKER This will make you smile. You know we were talking about EV myths, here's one i hadn't heard. "Thanks to a recent study by German scientists, one other question appears to have been answered: Electric cars, they found, won’t interfere with a person’s pacemaker" says UF Health Podcasts: "The team found the electromagnetic strength was highest when the cars were being charged, but there was no pacemaker inhibition, no shocks and no devices needed to be reprogrammed. Electric cars are equipped with shielding to prevent electromagnetic interference with on-board computer systems, which the researchers said could explain the low electromagnetic strength inside the cars. This shielding may also be what protected the heart devices from any interference."     COMMUNITY   @SveinMedhus - Not a single #BEV spoted in Mallorca this week, not even at this charger at Lluc.  We have seen one real donkey and plenty of diesel-donkeys. Our donkey driver did not believe in the new 500 chargers to be paid by the ecotax by 2020 as reported by @EVNewsDaily . I miss #Norway

It’s Friday 8th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ELECTRIC CAR SWITCH The plans I've talked about on previous podcasts, to switch World Rallycross Championship cars to being electric, has been approved by the governing body the FIA World Motor Sport Council. I first heard of plans for this last year, and then earlier this year invitations were sent out for companies who wish you tender for the supply of the battery and chassis. This is very significant news as it starts from 2020. World Rallycross is a fast-paced, high adrenaline sport for drivers and spectators alike, with the electric cars eligible for both manufacturer teams and privateers. Every constructor will have the same battery and chassis package, which will be open for privateer teams to homologate as well. We now know Williams will provide all the batteries, as they have done to Formula E up to now, with Formula E moving to McLaren for the 2018/19 season. IN fact some of those specs from Formula Ewill be used to derive the regulations which will govern the manufacturers and private teams on the powertrains they design. The stats: two motors, one on each axle, and total power of 500kW.   https://www.autosport.com/wrx/news/136578/world-rx-2020-electric-car-move-approved   KIA NIRO EV REVEALED TO PUBLIC KIA has revealed its all-new Niro EV at the 2018 Busan International Motor Show today in Korea. They are finally showing off to the public what you and I have talked about for a while since we saw the concept at CES plus official pics last month. As Hyundai have done with the Kona they've taken the combustion car and added some batteries. The charge point is in the front grille behind a flappy slidey cover, and the small LED headlights are something we're seeing more from EV designers. Of course no need for air intakes to keep an engine cool makes the front look way better. As we've mentioned the Kona, in the same way the Niro offers a 64kWh lithium-polymer battery for 279 miles of range. However even though they're sister companies, it's not the same battery as it would be fair to assume. In fact more than one EV blog I've read today said they're fitting the same packs - oopsie! Different suppliers and different chemistry. That's not EPA rated yet though so expect something around 240 miles, still better than base spec Model 3. The motor drives the front wheels with 150kW of power and a brisk, without being face-melting, 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds. That's the same for both battery options. And charging speeds? Yes they're confirmed for 100kW. The smaller pack is 39.2kWh for 186 miles of range. And if you're like me, I always find myself thinking I need the long range, but when you look at the journeys we make, 186 miles is just fine in nearly all cases. Even if that range came down to real world 100 miles you know the price of a Kia will be super competitive. Inside we have some blue accents for snazziness, look out for a 7inch touchscreen with plenty of buttons, this is no Tesla minimalism. There's an included wireless phone charger, plus plenty of safety tech like Forward Collision Warning with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Intelligent Stop & Go, and Lane Following Assist. As for their version of Autopilot, it's Level 2, so you'll stay in lane on the freeway with accelerating, decelerating, braking and steering up to 80mph. Korean sales start soon with prices elsewhere announced later this year - that's as specific as they'll be. With 5,000 domestic orders in Korea I would expect them to either service all of them first, or a at split it 50:50 for Korea vs Rest Of The World.   GM TO SELL HONDA ADVANCED ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES IN NORTH AMERICA Reuters just reported: "General Motors Co will supply advanced batteries to Japan’s Honda Motor Co, the companies said Thursday, a move that could significantly reduce the cost of future electric vehicles at both automakers after 2020. GM and Honda on Thursday said they would “collaborate” on the batteries, with GM supplying cells and modules, mainly for electric vehicles to be sold by both companies in North America. A source familiar with GM’s plans said its current battery cell supplier, Korea’s LG Chem, is expected to provide cells for the new battery, which is mainly a GM design. The new batteries are expected to begin production around 2021, the source said." This looks like the classic win-win. The next gen batteries will be higher energy density than those used in the Bolt and for instance.   DRIVER IN FATAL TESLA AUTOPILOT CRASH DID NOT HAVE HANDS ON WHEEL This is such a horrible story to report on but I want to quickly update you. "The driver of a Tesla who fatally crashed in California in March did not have his hands on the steering wheel at the time of the accident, said a preliminary report from the National Traffic Safety Board on Thursday." according to CNBC.   NEW NISSAN eNV200 CAMPERVAN Nissan's hidden gem is the eNV200, electric van and people carrier which has recently been updated with the 40kWh battery, and thermal management to handle those who use it as a van and rapid charge regularly for business. "Nissan has taken the covers off a new in-house campervan range at the 2018 Madrid Motor Show. The campers, which are currently exclusively for the Spanish market, with an all-electric e-NV200 version included in the line-up." say AutoExpress: "All the campervans offer an extendable roof, which the maker claims allows four people to sit and stand in comfort. They all also come with a double bed, however, the NV300 is the only van to offer sleeping for four, thanks to a second double bed which is made available once the roof is raised. Inside this larger NV300-based model, there’s a fridge, sink, hob and heater to make sure occupants don’t freeze during their fine dining experience." The campervan eNV200 will be popular for those wanting to cut their emissions whilst enjoying the classic campervan roadtrip experience.   DAIMLER TRUCKS NORTH AMERICA UNVEILS TWO ELECTRIC MODELS Daimler press office have been in touch with news that: "Freightliner Trucks premiered two fully electrified commercial vehicles, a Freightliner eCascadia™ heavy-duty truck and a Freightliner eM2 106 medium-duty truck today, during the Daimler Trucks Capital Market and Technology Day here. Freightliner plans to deliver an Electric Innovation Fleet of 30 vehicles to customers later this year for further testing under real-world operating conditions." "The eCascadia has up to 730 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 550 Kwh usable capacity, a range of up to 250 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 200 miles) in about 90 minutes. The Class 8 tractor is designed for local and regional distribution and drayage. The eM2 has up to 480 peak horsepower. The batteries provide 325 Kwh of usable capacity, a range of up to 230 miles and have the ability to charge up to 80 percent (providing a range of 184 miles) in about 60 minutes. The eM2 is Freightliner's electrified solution for local distribution, pickup and delivery, food and beverage delivery, and last-mile logistics applications." What did Daimler Trucks chief Martin Daum say? “We are the undisputed global leader of the trucking industry and we intend to remain in that position with electric trucks and buses." Just a reminder on the Tesla Semi range - 500 miles. Which Elon said yesterday was already being improved on for the truck which goes on sale in 2020.   PORSCHE MISSION E CROSS TURISMO As well as the Porsche Mission E, the recently unveiled Cross Turismo version is a more rugged version of the same car. Designed to fit your skis in, in you will. And some of the early test mules have been given to journalists in North America. BMWBlog praised the steering and handling, but also said: "It’s also really, really fast. They weren’t allowed to drive it past 50 mph but Porsche claims it has 600 hp from its dual electric motors and is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and 0-124 mph in 12 seconds. The latter performance figure is actually faster than the Tesla Model S P100D. The biggest trick up the Mission E’s sleeves, though, is the fact that it can charge faster than any other electric car before it. With the capability of 800-volt charging, the Porsche Mission E can 250 miles of range in 15 minutes." More of those chargers will be appearing very soon especially in Europe where several networks are at advanced stage of installing them.   EV CHARGING MAP ALLOWS ROUND AUSTRALIA EV TRIPS "It’s now possible to drive around Australia in an electric car, thanks to a comprehensive EV charging station map. The Tesla Owners Club of Australia (TOCA) released its Round Australia Electric Highway map this month." according to EnergyMatters.com.au "However, the map is not complete. There are still gaps in fast-charging stations and places where three phase is not available. As a result, TOCA and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA) are offering help to property owners. TOCA and AEVA will give a 32 amp 3 phase electrical outlet free to any site which will help build the Round Australia and Red Centre routes to distance intervals of 300 km max. The property owner must install it reasonably promptly at an accessible location, and agree to let electric vehicles charge there."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. It’s Monday 4th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC ORDER BOOK CLOSED IN NORWAY AFTER BIG DEMAND AND LOW PRICE According to CarksUK.net "The Hyundai Kona Electric order book has been closed in Norway after 20,000 expressions of interest in Hyundai’s new electric SUV are made. Just 2,500 Kona EVs will be available this year in Norway. So, for the time being, Hyundai in Norway is closing their order book whilst they try and figure out how to deal with demand. Demand which is going to be further fuelled with a list price in Norway of just £30,000. That price of £30,000 for the Hyundai Kona in Norway isn’t for the entry-level, smaller battery and motor model, but for the full fat 64kWh battery, chunky 210bhp electric motor, 300 mile range and 100kW rapid charge ability. Even adding extras doesn’t cost a fortune, with a leather interior adding under £1k to the price, and adding leather and a Panoramic roof just under £2k. They plan to re-open the order book on 2 July. " http://www.carsuk.net/hyundai-kona-electric-order-book-closed-in-norway-after-big-demand-and-low-price/   NEW YORK STATE WILL SPEND $250 MILLION TO BUILD MORE EV CHARGING "New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a new $250 million electric vehicle expansion initiative, EVolve NY, with the New York Power Authority. In addition to state funding, the program will also seek to create private sector partnerships through 2025 to aggressively accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles throughout New York State." according to ELECTRIC CARS REPORT: "EVolve NY is a key pillar of the Governor’s Charge NY 2.0 initiative, which aims to encourage and support electric car adoption by increasing the number of charging stations statewide, and will help bring the state closer to its goal of installing at least 10,000 Vcharging stations by the end of 2021." https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/06/new-york-state-will-spend-250-million-to-build-more-ev-charging/   QUEBEC LOOKS TO SPEED UP CHARGER INSTALLS WITH NEW BILL And heading North, in Canada, InsideEVs has news of more investment in chargers: "Currently there are some 133 public DC chargers installed, but in 10 years there are 1,600 more planned to handle growth of electric cars. The government of Québec expects that the number of plug-ins will increase from 24,694 (as of end of March), to 100,000 by 2020, 300,000 by 2026 and one million by 2030." https://insideevs.com/quebec-looks-to-speed-up-charger-installs-with-new-bill/   TESLA WON’T LEASE YOU A MODEL 3 UNTIL 2019 Torque Report says: "Generally it’s recommended to lease an electric car rather than outright buy one, since the residual values for electric cars aren’t as great as their gas powered counterparts. Well if you’re hoping to lease a Tesla Model 3, you’ll have to wait until probably some time in 2019 to do so." On Twitter, Elon Musk said: "Leasing negatively effects Tesla cash flow, so we prob won’t offer Model 3 leases for 6 to 9 months. Loan financing is a better deal anyway, as bank conservatism for new car models is v conservative about residual value, but Teslas have always had strong residual value." https://www.thetorquereport.com/tesla/tesla-wont-lease-you-a-model-3-until-2019/   YOUR AVERAGE CAR PAYMENT IS NOW A RECORD $523 PER MONTH Talking of leasing, and Jalopnik reports on a CNBC piece: "Car buyers are taking out loans with exceptionally long, record-setting terms—in some cases approaching 96 months—and yet that still hasn’t stopped average monthly payments from continuing to grow. Now, CNBC reports, the typical loan payment for new cars has reached a record $523 per month. in the first quarter of 2018, the average monthly loan payment for a new vehicle increased $15 compared to a year ago, and now it’s at $523." That CNBC source article says: "The credit analysis company’s review of new and open auto loans for the first three months of this year found buyers of new cars, trucks and SUVs borrowed an average of $31,453 — also a record high. Experian based its review off an analysis of 4.7 million auto loans, according to CNBC. The increase in monthly payments for new vehicles is not surprising given the rise in interest rates. In the first quarter, the average interest rate for a new vehicle loan was 5.17 percent, up 31 basis points compared with a year ago, according to Experian." https://jalopnik.com/your-average-car-payment-is-now-a-record-523-per-month-1826450154   TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE HITS THE DYNO, PUTS DOWN 340 RWHP Finally, Auto Evolution have some dyno news!: The Long Range is what Mountain Pass Performance ordered from Tesla, and three hours after delivery, the company specialized in aftermarket parts for the Model 3 took the car to On Point Dyno for testing. “We were lucky to be able to receive our car on the first day of mass deliveries,” explains the uploader, adding that the car had an 80% charge when it was dynoed." “After a bit of fussing around tricking the traction control system,” the Model 3 Long Range “put down 340 WHP and about the same amount of torque.” Considering that Tesla quotes an estimated 306 horsepower and 415 pound-feet, that’s not bad at all. But there’s more to this dyno session that what meets the eye, as follows: “The X-Axis displays the motor’s RPM, and torque displayed is torque at the motor, not at the wheels.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. 4 May 2018 | Immense VW Battery Contracts Equal Total Tesla Value, Flufferbot Fails and Kia Niro BEV

Friday 4th May 2018. VW BATTERY ANNOUNCEMENT GOES UNDER THE RADAR There was another big auto event and it wasn’t Tesla’s Q1 results. It was VW’s AGM. Tesla has a market capitalisation of $48.2bn. Shortly after the Q1 results and a strange earning call you and I will get onto later, VW signed battery contracts. And let me put this out there. Every single article I read today talked about Tesla losing value due to Elon Musk’s attitude on the investor call. Let me throw something your way, which might not be the whole reason, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. Just after the Tesla announcement, VW Group said they have contracts on their battery supply and associated technology worth way more than previously announced. Worth DOUBLE previously announced. VW Group said they have contracts worth 40bn Euros, that’s $48bn. What did I just say Tesla was worth? That’s right, VW signed purchase contracts for just one part of their electric cars worth the whole of Tesla – autos and energy combined. My mind is a little blown. By 2025 VW will sell 3 million pure electric cars every single year, Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess told investors Thursday at the annual shareholder meeting in Berlin. VW currently makes more cars in four days than Tesla does in a year and has enormous firepower. “By 2020 we will offer our customers more than 25 new electric models and more than 20 plug-in hybrids,” Diess said. “In just a few years’ time, then, across all brands and regions, we aim to put the world’s largest fleet of electric vehicles on the road.”   KIA UNVEILS NIRO EV IN JEJU Kia Motors took us by surprise yesterday by unveiling the pure BEV version of its Niro crossover, at the fifth "Electric Vehicle Expo" on the resort island of Jeju. Korea’s second largest carmaker showed off its Niro alongside the Niro PHEV and the Soul EV. The Niro is interesting because many people went gaga for the Hyundai Kona earlier this year, particularly the long range version with a 64kWh LGChem pack, with thermal management, and although the price isn’t known it won’t be Tesla prices. And now it's sister company Kia to take the spotlight. The Niro has the same parts, so can do 380 kilometres on a single charge of the 64kWh pack or 240 km on the smaller 39.2 kWh battery. Also, for Kia prices you get front collision avoidance, lane keeping assist and highway driving assist systems. Last year Kia sold 23,647 Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrid models. Kia plans to begin selling the Niro EV in the domestic market sometime soon after July, having received more than 5,000 pre-orders for the Niro EVs in February. Both Hyundai and Kia models will be supply restricted for a long time.      GO INSIDE THE RIMAC FACTORY FOR A CLOSER LOOK CNET has posted a video of the Rimac factory. They say: "The Rimac C Two promises to make 1,914 horsepower and 1,696 pound-feet of torque, which should propel the car to 60 miles per hour in 1.85 seconds. Rimac estimates that the C Two's top speed will be around 258 miles per hour. While the preproduction car debuted at Geneva this year, Rimac estimates that it will be over a year before they start getting delivered to customers." I'll post a link to CNET in the show notes. they say the video offers a look into the Rimac factory and "explains how a Croatian electric hypercar startup came to source the wheels for its 2,000 hp car from a relatively small bespoke wheel company in sunny Vista, California." The video is 6mins long and if you like close up super slo-motions, you’re in for a treat.   FAREWELL FLUFFERBOT & EARNINGS CALL REACTION The Tesla earnings call was very entertaining for someone not invested in the company. Elon was tolerant at best of some of the questions, especially things he thought were dumb to ask. Some highlights… Supercharger V3 network - something along the lines of 200-250kW is ultimate for pack size and C rating. Elon is open to other car makers using the network, for a fee. Share Price - The company’s share price dropped 5% on Wednesday and slid further on Thursday, wiping more than $3.4bn off the value of the company Model Y production - set to start within 24 months, 2020 being later than a Reuters report suggested, and it won't be at Fremont. That new facility’s location hasn’t been decided yet. Semi - 2,000 reserved. They're not actively selling. Musk said they could build a 500mile truck today, and by the time it launches, they'll have 600miles cracked. Is that because all these road tests are showing the letting regen do it's work on a heavy truck is giving them more range? Or platooning? Or better battery tech we don't know about? One thing JB Straubel said, when it was pointed out Daimler said the Semi was against the laws of physics, he didn't feel Daimler understood exactly what Tesla could do with batteries. China - He also mentioned that a Gigafactory for China would also be announced soon. And every future Giga factory would have car production and battery production under one roof. Cells - Cells used in Model 3 are the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle. “We have achieved this by significantly reducing cobalt content per battery pack while increasing nickel content and still maintaining superior thermal stability.” He gave us an insight into why the robots had held up production of the Model 3, including a machine which was trying to automate the process of bonding some fluff on top of the battery pack to deaden the sound, which is turns out wasn’t needed anyway. And the machine couldn’t match it up in the right place, a machine Elon dubbed Flufferbot. Sadly, it had to go. In a moment of pure internet, a Flufferbot now has it’s own twitter account. And in a moment which reminded me of pure Steve Jobs, when he wanted Apple to be a private company which didn't answer to bozo analysts (although I think analysts are a fine bunch of folk) Elon let rip. He cut off one question and then, after another, took a 14 second pause and went to a young YouTuber who seems to have found his way onto the call by way of a campaign to ask one question for retail investors. Elon kept him on for TWELVE questions. So established media and analysts got upset because their exclusive club had been gate-crashed and they had a good moan online today. Bernstein: "Beneath the bizarre theatrics, however, we see Tesla's Q1 as in-line with expectations on most metrics, including revenues, gross margins, and free cash flow." Morgan Stanley: "Irrespective of the Tesla CEO's annoyance with the genre of questions he was receiving from the analyst community, we note that an important part of Tesla's success has been its relationship with the capital markets in funding its ambitious plans." JP Morgan: "We expect TSLA to fall today after CEO Elon Musk dismissed multiple analyst questions as 'dry' and 'boring' (including questions probing what we feel are key topics, such as profitability of the Model 3 and the company's capital requirements)." Piper Jaffray: " The unorthodox behaviour sparked an after-hours sell-off. We still recommend TSLA, but in the next few months especially, we would expect significant volatility." Baird: "Ignore the noise and focus on metrics. TSLA reported solid results and is successfully ramping Model 3 vehicle and battery production" Nomura: "No shareholder wants to see a CEO lose his patience over important, albeit mundane questions" Evercore ISI: ""'Wow' is the only way to describe the Tesla Q1 call which was unlike anything we have heard before."   NEW SWEDISH CAR POLICIES EXPECTED TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET SHARE IN SWEDEN Zachary at Clean Technica has picked up on a story about new tax in Sweden from July which will penalise gas and diesel, whilst plug ins get a boost. In the first three years of owning an ICE car based on CO2 emissions. Sweden has 6.1% of new vehicle registrations being plug ins, and previous 5 year exemption to vehicle tax is now completely removed and zero emission vehicles get a bonus up to 25% of the list price, which is up to $6,700, for something like a Nissan LEAF. Whereas buying a BMW i3 REX gets you $5,600 bonus.   ENPHASE REPORTS ‘DECENT’ Q1 2018 EARNINGS AS CFO RESIGNS And the last story today, a bit of solar. First up Enphase, makers of micro-inverters. Which particularly interest me, I don't have solar at the moment and really want to start adding some. However I also want to cashflow it, and also want to build up with some on the garage roof before any on the house. So micro-inverters would be an interesting way to scale up if i get some solar this year. I like that each panel can generate grid-ready AC power. Their latest results were $70m of revenue in Q1 18 and their cash balance was almost double, largely due to private equity investment in the quarter. They shipped 611,000 micro inverters last year. The IQ7, their latest model now available in the US and UK, soon Germany and Austria. "Unlike the rest of its inverters, the IQ 8 platform is designed to support both grid-tied and off-grid applications, supported by the company’s Ensemble software" say GreenTechMedia.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 22nd March 2018.   MUSK PAYDAY NEWS!   His payday has been approved for a nominal value of $2.6bn, however that could be as much as $55bn worth of shares if he hits all the targets of Tesla being worth a mind-blowing $650bn. Including his current holding and presuming he doesn’t sell any shares, Elon Musk would then own 28% of Tesla, worth $182bn. As of 2017 the World’s richest person is Amazon’s Jezz Bezos at $112bn.   VW EGOLF OFF THE MENU We’ll start with some good news about e-Golf sales, but if you’re listening in North America wanted to drive a new VW eGolf you better be quick. According to insight from InsideEVs, sales have been so strong here in Europe, they are almost out of stock. After all it was the best selling BEV in Western Europe according to InsideEVs sales scorecard. VW chairman Herbert Diess said: ““Our electric vehicle sales were three times more popular in 2017 than 2016 and the e-Golf nearly sold out, so it’s clear customers are willing to switch to EVs once the price is right.”   NEXT STEPS FOR BMW Fresh news from just a few hours ago, at BMW’s Annual Accounts Press Conference they confirmed their next electric car will be the iX3. Then we’ll get the i4, previously known as the i Vision Dynamics. The only look we’ve had at it is in pure, utterly bonkers concept car form, but if the production EV was anywhere near it, it’s going to look great. From one pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) now in the guise of the i3, the i4 will be one of 12 battery-electric models BMW aims to have in showrooms by 2025. BMW CEO Harald Krueger said the i4 will be produced at the BMW's factory in Munich where it builds 3- and 4-series models. There’s also the electric MINI going into production in 2019, made here in the UK in Oxford as well as Mexico, before the electric version of the X3, the iX3, to be unveiled this year and available in 2020. In 2021 comes the iNEXT as their innovation flagbearer. But he wouldn’t say where in that timeline the i4 sits. BMW do expect, within 3 years, pure electric ranges will be 435 miles as the norm and 62miles normal for PHEVs. Autonews say BMW has secured naming rights for the badges i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9.   VW FACTORY INVESTMENT IN USA According to Fortune VW will be investing $340million in their Chattanooga factory to build a 5-seater SUV. At the New York International Auto Show on 30th March we’ll see their new SUV concept based on the MQB platform, which of course is designed for hybrid and PHEV options. The Chattanooga factory has been viewed as the likely location for VW’s plan to produce electric vehicles.   POD POINT BREAK RECORDS In the UK, charging provider Pod Point has installed 67 charge points for Skanska, and it looks like it breaks the record for the largest in the country. And one of the largest in Europe too. It took them 2 weeks to install the 7kW chargers but, the key detail, they also included the infrastructure to add another 243 more. That would be 310 charge points in one location for Skanska employees to charge their cars whilst they work. Erik Fairbairn, chief executive of Pod Point, said: “This is the largest single site charge point installation that we’re aware of in the UK, but also a sign of a larger shift over the past six months, as more businesses wake up to the benefits of EVs. We’ve certainly seen a big increase in enquiries from companies wanting future proof charge point installations that can be scaled up as their fleets make the switch to electric.” Utility Week say “Recent research commissioned by Ovo Energy suggests existing EVs in the UK could contribute more than 114MW to the National Grid, enough to power over 300,000 homes.   HYUNDAI ELECTRIFIES THE TUCSON “Hyundai will present the facelifted version of the third-gen Tucson next week” according to CarScoops, “on March 28, during a press conference at the New York Auto Show, which will be streamed live. The crossover slots between the Kona and Santa Fe Sport has been spied numerous times in prototype form with heavy camouflage covering its body. Hyundai has also confirmed hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the SUV”. “The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric will join the other two in New York. The zero emission vehicle comes straight from the Geneva Motor Show, where it was revealed with a 133hp (135PS) electric motor and 39.2kWh battery pack. This version can be driven for up to 186miles (300km), whereas the long-range variant can travel up to 292miles (470km) and uses a 201hp (204PS) electric motor, paired to a 64kWh battery pack. As a final note, you can watch Hyundai’s press conference, which starts on March 28, at 12:45pm EST (5:45pm CET)” on CarScoops.com   BMW 3-SERIES SPIED Finally the all new BMW 3-series has been spotted testing in the concept form and in full-on camo gear. This car will be huge for BMW. It simple must be a huge success. They want Audi A4 buyers to choose the 3-series instead, same for Merc C-Class buyers. It’s all new from the ground up. I have no doubt there will be a strong emphasis on plug ins and hybrids in the range. The hybrid tech might be the mildest of mild, just a 48v system to run systems and take the pressure of the ICE, or to do things like spool up the turbo ready for when the engine needs it. Anything which gets the CO2 down under the new WLTP emissions system which all cars must use from September this year.   Since the first version of the Ford Fusion Energi in 2013 not much has happened on their electric front. Well, nothing actually apart from announcements. Now they’re updating it for the 2019 model year which includes a Hybrid and Phev. The Fusion Energi, the only plug in Ford sell now the C-Max Energi is no more, gets a very little battery bump. From 7.6kWH to 7.9kWH. It sits in the same space as before but, considering other auto makers like Renault have done the same but with much bigger capacity increases, like the new LEAF or the Zoe ZE40, at least we know the technology exists to do that. It’s an EPA range of 25 electric miles.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 16th March 2018.   RECORD BREAKING BATTERIES Firstly apologies for missing this is as part of the Volkswagen Press Conference this week. It’s a small detail but I think it’s perhaps the most significant of all the announcements. And that’s quite a statement given the headline number was 20 billion Euros in contracts – not promises or press releases for commitments to clean up – signed contracts for battery supply in China and Europe, with an announcement for North America to come. I think the most startling figure wasn’t 20 billion, but 100. Just 100 euros was the key number and I missed it. But it was in the Q&A section, so that’s my defence! The CEO confirmed it has written battery contracts for under 100 Euro per kWh. Let’s add some caveats to that. WE don’t know any more about the deal, or whether there were a range of contracts, which is almost certain, and that was the lowest price or even the average price across all of them. We do know, unlike with Tesla’s Gigafactory and Panasonic, VW don’t want to be in the business of making batteries, so that 100 euros per kWh could be the price per battery delivered, which would be very impressive if true, considering hundreds of millions required for capital investment had they followed Tesla in making the batteries. That works out to $120 - $125, which is competitive against GM saying they were in the region of $145. Given VW need most of their batteries from 2022 onwards, given the rapid price fall of batteries, if these contracts are 100 euros four years away that is more reasonable. We just don’t know yet. Elon Musk has talked about $100 being an inflection point when electric cars, whose battery is by far the most expensive part, become the same as combustion engine cars. Given VW suppliers will be making a profit on those prices, I think that’s good news for Tesla. Although they do have the sunk costs of infrastructure and staff at Gigafactory 1, 2, 3 and onwards, the sheer scale of half a million Model 3’s per year mean that magical $100 shouldn’t be too far off. It seems like not so long ago we were talking about the price dropping $1000 per kWh. http://seekingalpha.com/article/4156050-lower-cost-tesla-volkswagens-new-battery-cell-costs-100-euro-per-kwh   AUDI E-TRON PRICE AND GT VERSION Staying with VW and their Audi brand will be out of the blocks with the e-tron soon. The prototypes ferrying car journalists around at the Geneva Motor Show last week were looking quite advanced. And now we know two things, when you can have one and how much they’ll cost. The e-tron will be available by the end of the year, and the price will start at 80,000 euros. It’s already on sale in some parts of Europe if you want to place a deposit. Some extra detail I’m not surprised about is a GT, or Gran Turismo, version coming soon. Just as the Jaguar I-PACE sees value in the electric racing series supporting Formula E, which will have a halo effect on the cars and the brand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jaguar Land Rovers performance teams allowed to add some bells and whistles it for a road going version. Remember as well the Tesla-based Electric GT championship now has FIA approval and looks to be on track to race late this year or next year. https://www.electrive.com/2018/03/15/audi-e-tron-price-gt-version-announced/   CHAdeMO UPDATE A quick check of the CHAdeMO website sees the total number of installed chargers heading towards 18,000 which up 30% year on year. Which countries and manufacturers will adopt and promote which technology is one of the most interesting parts of the future EV economy. As of the end of last year, 775,000 CHAdeMO compatible cars are on the roads, out of which 330,000 found a home in Europe, which saw a 50% increase in CHAdeMO chargers. That’s impressive as Europe is heading towards nearly all rapid chargers being CCS. CHAdeMO are keen to highlight their bidirectional capability as Vehicle 2 Grid becomes of interest to both buyers and utilities, who see a large stock of EVs as the perfect way to smooth out the peaks of the grid when electricity generation gets the most expensive. CHAdeMO also have confirmed specs for 200kW speeds and soon 400kW specs will be announced. That should future-proof even the most aggressive of fast chargers. Once again, it’s always worth saying, nearly all charging is carried out at home or work. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/03/chademo-2017-another-good-year-of-great-growth/   HYUNDAI WANTS MORE COLD WEATHER MILES Hyundai have been talking to Electrek about the cold weather performance of the Kona. It comes with a heat pump which is an expensive option on many EV. Electrek says the smart air intake recycles heated air by controlling the amount of air entering and exiting the vehicle. By better controlling the air flow inside the vehicle, the HVAC system is able to heat the cabin more efficiently, thereby minimizing the amount of heating used during winter driving. There’s a driver-only button you can push which shuts off any heating to the passenger side of the vehicle, again savings energy when it’s very cold. Maybe those options above aren’t so critical with the 64kWh battery but with the smaller, more affordable 39.2 kWh pack it will add valuable miles to the range. https://electrek.co/2018/03/14/hyundai-kona-electric-cold-weather-performance/   PANASONIC ADD ANOTHER LOCATION Panasonic has confirmed they have started production of new prismatic batteries in China. Panasonic will manufacture the high-capacity and high-safety prismatic-type batteries at this factory and ship them to the North American and Chinese markets. This gives them facilities to serve the USA, Japan and China. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/03/panasonic-starts-ev-battery-production-in-china   TESLA UPDATE Finally Tesla has started an Over The Air update of the latest new software to and owners testing it are reporting improvements to the Autopilot system. We knew it was coming, Elon said it was coming, and we never doubted it! Electrek say: “Autopilot 2.0/2.5 drivers who reached out to Electrek are seeing a significant improvement in lane detection, a reduction of “ping-ponging” within a lane, and a generally better experience when Autosteer is activated. Some are also reporting a more efficient Traffic-Aware Cruise Control to slow down and stop when locked into a lead vehicle.” Where do you stand on the Autopilot 1 vs Autopilot 2 debate? In another report the general responsiveness and speed of the touchscreen has also been noticeably improved. https://electrek.co/2018/03/15/tesla-autopilot-update-autosteer/   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Thursday 1st March 2018. Coming up today we’ll talk about a battery teardown, and Škoda playing catch-up…   HYUNDAI / KIA TRIPLE WHAMMY …but first, let’s talk about Hyundai / Kia and their electrification plans. Yesterday we heard about the Hyundai Kona, and 24hours later, there’s more reaction to the new model. Most of it has been about affordable range, which seems to have pleased most reviewers. The headlines of 64kWh battery, 7.6 seconds 0-60 and almost 300 miles range on WLTP ticked three important boxes.   The Hyundai IONIQ is the most efficient EV I know of, going a long way on a modest battery, so although some say that the WLTP figure is still more optimistic I’m inclined to think Hyundai know how to get the most out of the package.   The EPA range is definitely more realistic but here’s why almost 300 miles could be more accurate. The other big car release recently using WLTP range was the Nissan LEAF packing a 40kWh battery and getting 150 real world miles, give or take some either side. That’s using tried and tested battery chemistry.   The new Hyundai Kona is their first to use the cells which are said to have made a step forward in energy density. We know the LG Chem technology also includes thermal management which the LEAF doesn’t.  Maybe that range is realistic. And as for price, here in the UK the ICE version of the Kona starts at £16500. Most reviewers are saying £25,000 for the short range and £30,000 for the long range Kona electric, and then take off the £4,500 government grant, it starts to look like a very attractive option. The only issue is, you can’t buy one until the end of this year.   Staying in the family, the Kia Niro Hybrid and PHEV has been spotted as a pure BEV.  The hybrids are already great cars, using the same tech as the multi-drivetrain IONIQ models.   And my final Korean update today is the Kia Soul EV, this time using (you guessed it) the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro platform. It will be launched in the second half of this year and if you liked the sound of everything I just said, I think it makes sense to apply it to the Soul. The current soul has a 30kWh battery, so even the short range Kona battery is a big step up, let alone that 64kWh one.   One thing I should say about all of the above, given the IONIQ uses CCS for DC rapid charging, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much morae of the CHAdeMo connector coming from Korea.   https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/electric-hyundai-kona-price-specs-and-release-date-3891 https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidkiley5/2018/02/28/kia-niro-hybrid-could-be-legitimate-prius-fighter-and-ev-version-is-likely-on-the-way/#4148decb6738 https://www.electrive.com/2018/02/28/next-gen-kia-soul-ev-new-platform-2-battery-options/   ŠKODA PLAY CATCH UP Volkswagen Group has made a big deal out of its EV investment, but one of their brands not associated with EV’s is Škoda. However from next year Škoda will borrowing a few electric parts from their VW colleagues as the powertrain will be lifted from the Passat GTE.   However the battery will be a larger 13kWh pack allowing 44 miles of range. If you have a 20 mile commute, you could drive most day’s emission free.   And that’s as far as Škoda are going for now but, considering they’re able to go shopping in the VW parts store, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something built on the ID series.   https://www.carscoops.com/2018/02/skoda-superb-phev-coming-passat-gte-powertrain-70km-ev-range/   WHAT DID THE ROMANS EVER DO FOR US? Yesterday I said on the podcast that Germany allowing cities to ban diesels might embolden others to do the same. I didn’t expect it in less than 24 hours though. The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, said on Facebook that Rome is set to do the same by 2024.   Two things Rome isn’t short on is Diesels and monuments. Around two thirds of cars sold are diesel, and around 3,600 ancient stone monuments are at risk from pollution.   Rome follows fellow Italian city Milan which already announced a 2030 diesel ban.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/28/rome-to-ban-diesel-cars-from-city-centre-by-2024-italy   MORE MODELS NEEDED Writing in today’s Guardian, Adam Vaughan makes the case that the uptake of EV’s isn’t because of lack of chargers, but lack of choice in Europe.   Here’s a question: have you heard of the Platform For Electromobility? No, me neither. It’s a group of 31 interested parties, from car makers, to charging installers to industrial groups. They include Tesla, Renault –Nissan and Siemens.   In Europe there are 6 EVs per public charger and at the current rate of installation, will be more than enough until 2020. One of the report authors says: ““It is a myth that has been spread by the car industry to create the impression they would love to sell more electric cars but there just isn’t the charging points out there. It’s a smokescreen.”   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/27/lack-of-models-not-charging-points-holding-back-electric-car-market   350KW MISSON-E CHARGERS On the subject of charging, how fast is fast enough? Porsche has long talked about their 800v 350kW rapid chargers. And now they’re installing them in all 189 Porsche dealerships in North America, as they prepare to sell the Mission-E.   Charging that fast can add 250miles in 20 minutes but do you need to? It’s a difference between EV owners and those who drive ICE cars. Whilst EV owners know that 80s% of all charging is done at home – for some people it’s almost 100% - the last 100 years has conditioned drivers to think about running low on fuel before adding hundreds of miles of range, quickly, within a few minutes when they refuel.   It takes a very short period of EV ownership to realise you just a behaviour shift. And ignoring arguments of how much better it is to always leave your house with a full tank, I think the biggest benefit of 350kW is the PR job they’ll do far more than how much they’ll be used.   https://insideevs.com/porsche-dealerships-u-s-install-fast-chargers-mission-e/   IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS Have you got 96 minutes spare to watch a video of a battery being torn apart? That’s what a professor from Weber State University in Utah has done, taking apart the 60kWh pack from a Chevrolet Bolt.   One of the insights which got internet commenters frothy was the nominal capacity being 57kWh, not 60, which is commonly quoted. It follows other teardown videos of Model S and LEAF batteries. You’ve got to REALLY love teardown videos to spend an hour and a half watching this.   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1115518_chevrolet-bolt-ev-electric-car-whats-inside-the-battery-teardown-video-shows-all   CONFUSED CARJACKER And finally, a bittersweet story. We’d never wish this on anyone, but if you’re going to be carjacked, this is probably the best result.   Last Saturday in Austin a man tried to hijack a Chevvy Bolt whilst the owner was waiting at a stop sign. Rather horribly the driver was then attacked and had to escape. However the hijacker wasn’t expecting an electric car and couldn’t work it. In the time it took for him to scratch his head, a witness ran over to help and the hijacker gave up, only to be found by police hiding in some grass.   My condolences to the victim, I do hope he’s OK, and I hope they throw the book at the brainbox who can’t drive an EV.   https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/police-man-tried-to-hijack-electric-car-but-couldn%E2%80%99t-drive-it.109542/   Finally a reminder the Jaguar I-PACE Facebook live launch is 1pm Eastern time on Thursday 1st March, that’s 6pm UK and 7pm Central European.   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
