If you've been on the fence about whether to get an electric vehicle, now might be a good time to buy or lease one. A federal tax credit that lowers the cost of EVs is set to expire at the end of September — much earlier than planned. The change is part of President Donald Trump's major tax and spending bill, which eliminated several incentives for electric vehicles. EVs have come a long way in the last few years. They made up nearly 8 percent of new cars sold last year in Minnesota and more than 100 electric vehicle models are now for sale in the U.S. (A side-by-side comparison of models can be found here.) MPR News host Angela Davis talks with her guests about how public funding changes could affect the shift to electric, if now is a good time to swap the pump for a plug, and how far you can really go on a charge. Guests: Jukka Kukkonen is the founder of Shift2Electric, a Minnesota-based electric vehicle consulting and training company. He's also an instructor at the University of St. Thomas where he teaches courses about the EV market and technologies.  Katelyn Bocklund is the facilitator of Drive Electric Minnesota, a coalition that works to make electric vehicles more mainstream and easier to use in Minnesota. She's also a senior program manager of transportation at the nonprofit policy organization Great Plains Institute.

This week, the Unnamed Automotive Podcast jams out with some subcompact crossovers. The show starts with Sami's review of the 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric, a perfectly fine EV that is a bit overshadowed by its market. With the competition offering better value, Sami and Benjamin argue that a used Hyundai Kona Electric is the smart choice for EV shoppers on a tight budget. Then the guys turn their focus to the 2026 Honda HR-V. Using Sami's previous experience as background information on his tester, Benjamin starts off thinking the Honda subcompact is pretty solid, but after spending more time with it, he wonders if there's a worse choice in the segment. Chinese Communist Party-Linked Exec Donated $50K to Spanberger Campaign

Daily Signal News

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2025 19:02

Wednesday morning Alana Goodman of the Washington Free Beacon reported that a gentleman named Pin Ni, who is a US-based executive with luxury electric car maker KARMA Automotive gave $50,000 over two contributions to the gubernatorial campaign of former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger. Ni, more troubling, listed as a member of the Chinese Communist Party.  US Election law prohibits campaign contributions from foreign nationals, and the Chinese government insists that you renounce your Citizenship in order to qualify for US dual citizenship. So, one or the other must be true. For Spanberger, a big contribution from an Electric Vehicle manufacturer that would certainly have an interest in making sure that the Virginia Clean Economy Act doesn't get change or go away is problematic. Doubly ironic given the amount of angst that was expressed by the Democratic party leadership in 2021 about Glenn Youngkin's extensive business ties having been CEO of the Carlyse Group before being elected Governor. However, that isn't nearly the crime that accepting a political donation from a foreign national would be. The Beacon story says that Ni sits on the board of directors for the Wanxiang Group, which he founded in 1994. The company's 2025 annual report says that Ni had "been recognized" as an "Outstanding Communist Party Member of the Group" 15 times. Spanberger needs to address this but without any debates scheduled, Earle-Sears may not get a direct chance so it's up to the Virginia press corps. Before the story came out the Daily Signal spoke with Republican Party of Virginia Chair, State Senator Mark Peake about President Trump's statements regarding endorsing Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in her race against Spanberger and her unwillingness to debate and that is the podcast you are about to listen to. After seeing the story, he told us; “It doesn't surprise me that Chinese communists want Spanberger to win.  I am sure they have reviewed her voting record in Congress and prefer her to a true, conservative patriot like Winsome Sears.” Keep Up With The Daily Signal   Sign up for our email newsletters: https://www.dailysignal.com/email     Subscribe to our other shows:    The Tony Kinnett Cast: https://open.spotify.com/show/7AFk8xjiOOBEynVg3JiN6g  The Signal Sitdown: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2026390376   Problematic Women: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL7765680741   Victor Davis Hanson: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL9809784327   Follow The Daily Signal:    X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=DailySignal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailysignal/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDailySignalNews/  Truth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@DailySignal  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/dailysignal?sub_confirmation=1    Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and never miss an episode. At issue was concern over the electric and hybrid electric vehicles, and suggestions that the fire broke out on the deck with the EVs.

The United States and China wrapped up the third round of high-level trade negotiations earlier this week. American and Chinese negotiators met in Stockholm on July 28 and 29. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the talks as constructive and wide ranging. He acknowledged that an extension of the 90-day tariff pause was discussed but said that the final decision was up to President Trump.  As of today – August 1 – Trump has remained mum. The Chinese side's readout was devoid of details, although China's vice minister of commerce said that both countries would continue to push for an extension of the reciprocal tariffs and Chinese countermeasures. How should we assess the dynamics in the trade talks, including the balance of leverage between Washington and Beijing? And how might the trade negotiations shape the future of the US-China relationship? To discuss these questions, we are joined by Dr. Scott Kennedy. As Australia moves toward an all-electric future, a key question looms: how can we meet the surge in electricity demand that will be needed when we all drive electric vehicles, heat our hot water with electricity, cook with induction stoves and heat and cool our homes with reverse cycle air-conditioners? New modelling from the Australian National University, using the ACT as a case study, suggests the answer lies not in building more infrastructure but shifting when we use power. By charging electric vehicles and heating water during the day, when solar energy is plentiful and network demand is low, we could electrify our homes and transport without overloading the system. Dr Bjorn Sturmberg is a senior energy researcher and lead researcher on the ANU study.

Our hosts at the Unnamed Automotive Podcast are perfectly synchronized (unlike the 3rd gear in Sami's car) which means they can come to this weeks show to talk about their vastly different experiences in the same car. Up for review is the 2025 Cadillac Optiq, which both Benjamin and Sami had the pleasure of testing out, and both of them have plenty to say about. Sami seems charmed by its more mainstream roots, while Benjamin thinks the Optiq is the embodiment of GM's recent push for EVs. With plenty of range and space, there's a lot to like about the Optiq, but there are a few oddities too, including its class-exclusive hands-free driving mode too, which wasn't working so smoothly with one of our hosts. Then the guys talk about T-Tops, upcoming EVs and track cars, all questions asked by our fantastic listeners. Are electric vehicles, or EVs, right for your municipal fleet? They've surged in everyday popularity over the past 20 years and now are available from most of the mainstream automakers. Increasingly, governments and agencies are bringing on EVs, and peers are researching the merits. But EVs have evolved a lot, and it's easy to talk about them in general conversation with outdated info. So, we reached out to an expert to better understand today's context and possibilities with municipal government use. On this episode, guest John Bonitz of the NCSU Clean Energy Technology Center helps us out with questions about EVs, market points, costs, infrastructure needs and more.  Notes:

Send me a messageIs climate doomism stopping us from acting? In this episode, I speak with climate economist Michael Jakob, author of The Case Against Climate Doom, about why despair is not just unhelpful, it's inaccurate. We explore the real economic tipping points that are accelerating decarbonisation: plummeting costs for solar, wind, storage, and EVs. Michael argues that the shift to clean tech isn't about idealism, it's about basic economics. When renewables are cheaper and more reliable, adoption becomes inevitable. We dig into the role of carbon pricing, the importance of framing climate action around opportunity, not sacrific, and the political realities holding back faster policy change. Michael also shares examples from countries like Ethiopia and Vietnam, where rapid transitions are already underway. We talk about the limitations of international climate negotiations, the growing role of culture in shaping climate awareness, and why fear alone doesn't drive actio, agency does.If you're working in business, policy, or sustainability, this conversation offers a critical reframing: the future is still in our hands, and in many places, it's already arriving faster than expected.

Years of vicious domestic competition have created incredible innovation and cost discipline that will hit European carmakers like a sledgehammer. The air quality transformation: Beijing at 37°C was clean enough for a morning run, thanks to widespread EV adoption.Scale that defies comprehension: Convention centers 100 times the size of Union Square, cities of 20 million people, and AI platforms serving tens of millions of users. Our new showThis was originally recorded for “Friday with Azeem Azhar”, a new show that takes place every Friday at 9am PT and 12pm ET.
