Carl Reveals: The reliability issues with McLaren's entry-level sports models The first-ever supercar now valued at a staggering 2 million pounds The fascinating origin story of Lamborghini, detailing how a tractor maker's frustration with Ferrari led to the creation of a legendary supercar brand Rolls-Royce are discontinuing combustion engine models for convertibles The Mercedes race car that's never raced! The stark difference in buying behaviours between Lamborghini and Porsche customers BEST MOMENTS "This is a McLaren P1. Yeah. This is a special car. This is numbered one of 375 in the world. Only 1500 miles in a special MSO. MSO means McLaren special operations." "Lamborghini charge 1,800 pounds for the sticker. So the sticker that makes it look worse" "McLaren do carry this stigma and it's pointless saying that me not acknowledging it, they do carry the stigma that  McLaren are a nightmare to deal with. They're the worst company." "Stereotypically, a Porsche buyer is exactly the opposite. Like, my business partner researches for 20 years. Yeah, goes and sees the car three times, then probably doesn't buy one. And then waits for the bottom of the depreciation curve." "We're going to spend about 25,000 on getting it re-commissioned for someone else to not drive it for 25 years. And it's a shame because they drive so well. They drive really, really well." Wayne, affectionately known to many as ‘Man Bat', is the Chief Communications and D&I Officer at Bentley Motors and is responsible for much of what we see, hear and experience from the Bentley brand alongside his team of colleagues. Before taking the leading comms role at Bentley, Wayne has also been at the forefront of executive automotive PR with roles at VW, SEAT, Nissan, INFINITI and perhaps one of the most significant chapters, McLaren Automotive, where in his time as Global Communications Director he oversaw the launch of the McLaren P1, 650S, 675LT, 570S, 570GT, 720S, Senna, 600LT, Speed Tail and the GT.Later, Wayne moved from the British new kid on the block (McLaren) to one of the most prestigious British brands - Bentley where since starting with the marque, has seen his involvement in bringing the hybrid Bentayga, the 3rd Generation Continental GT, and the latest Generation Flying Spur to market as well as reworking and relaunching the prestigious Mulliner brand. Gunther Buerman and his Maggie Buerman opened the Newport Car Museum in 2017 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. They've constantly updated the combined automobile and history museum including its latest presentation — an homage to Porsche. Gunther Buerman, whose interest in automobiles began as a young boy when practiced wax paper transfer etchings of car advertisements from National Geographic Magazine, is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. A repeat guest who was willed a 1966 Ford Mustang nearly 40 years ago, Buerman owns dozens of vehicles, none any more important than his collection of the German sports cars of his early youth. The Newport Car Museum has a new permanent display of Porsches. He moved to New York as a young boy with his family where Buerman eventually became an attorney. He's the former chairman of Harris Beach, LLC, a major New York law firm. From his early life fondness for cars, Buerman and his wife, who live in Highland Beach, Florida and Newport, R.I., have established the largest auto museum on the East Coast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I interview the car collector and avid sailor about his nearly lifelong interest in cars, notably the expansive collection of prized Porsches at the Newport Car Museum Starting with a 1956 Porsche 356a Speedster, the Museum's collection includes every Speedster developed to date. The Speedster was redesigned in 1989, '94, 2011 and for a final time in 2019. After the 356 came a legend among modern automobiles, the Porsche 911. Ahead of its time when introduced in 1964, the rear-engine 911 evolved over three decades when Porsche introduced a new 911 Carrera in 1999. Among the Museum's 911s are a 1979 930 Turbo, a 2016 Targa 4S and three GTs – the 2011 GT3 RS 4.0, 2016 GT3 RS, and 2018 GT2 RS Weissach – the latter representing the highest-powered (700 hp), dual-track-and-road cars of their vintage. The museum's 2005 Carrera GT is one of the last real supercars with manual transmission: a naturally aspirated 10-cylinder "monster." Finally, the 2015 918 in the collection is forever relevant as one in the trifecta of current hypercars. The McLaren P1 and Ferrari La Ferrari are the also in the prized threesome. The vehicles in the Newport Auto Museum are complemented by mid-20th Center Modern furnishings of renowned international designers and automotive artworks by Los Angeles-based artist David Lloyd Glover. But first we discuss the development of the Dunsfold site, otherwise known as the Top Gear test track. Gran Turismo has a trailer out with the film following soon. F1 has taken over production of the Monaco Grand Prix from TMC, and the next Grand Tour adventure - Eurocrash - is coming out June 16th!Since the last episode, we've both been enthralled by Tavarish salvaging a McLaren P1, the great Nurburgring 24h live stream, and after Steve Sutcliffe voiced his opinion that the McLaren F1 is overrated, some classic Best Motoring featuring an F1 group test that rather backs up his theory. Chris also raises some interesting tips from The Photographer's Eye about how to get the best out of YouTube for viewers. For our review this episode, it has to be Fast X. Be warned, there is a spoiler section ahead! In 'What has Henry Catchpole been upto this week?', he's been taking a ride in the brain scrambling McMurtry Spieling fan car!For their YouTube picks, Chris went with one from TJ Hunt where he and his crew unpack a BMW Motorsport GT3 body kit, and all giggle like kids at Christmas. For his channel he went with the Nurburgring 24 Hour, which not only hosted live streams of the race, but quickly cut some beautiful highlights packages to aid the fan engagement. Marty picked F1 sharing the whole Imola Grand Prix from 2005, but as we recorded F1 had pulled it (Although it's still on the excellent F1 TV) and instead he went for the soggy 2008 Monaco Grand Prix which Matt Bishop recently said he thought was one of Lewis's greatest drives. The studio is packed with history this episode, The Namsayin boys are joined by local car legend and nationally celebrated cannabis grower, Buddha Matsui, of Gold Leaf cannabis. Buddha takes us through the late 80s, 90s and present day of the car culture here in Seattle and especially the energy found around local 206 neighborhood, Beacon Hill. First up however, new models, starting with the Germans. Mercedes Benz has released a new C63 AMG, a popular model in the states for its classic V8 in a small RWD sedan layout. But, the new version ditches the big powerful V8 for hybrid motors on the wheels, hybrid motors on the turbo and a 4 cylinder. The new version of the C class makes well into the 600 horsepower range as well as a staggering 752 foot-pounds of torque, making it the fasted C63, Mercedes has ever produced. The fellas discuss whether the new power plant will help or hinder the sales of the beloved model. Will the future look more like this, across all manufactures? Lastly, we go over the dynamics of the new ride and highlight the F1 technology being used and shared with other amazing machines like the AMG One hyper car. Then the platoon talks about natural disasters and automobiles. Florida is experiencing some bad hurricanes this season and the car gods have not been kind to a few individuals. The guys highlight a viral video of a very rare McLaren P1 hyper car, getting washed down the road along with its stable mate, a new Rolls Royce. A discussion of auto insurance and how cars in places like this get covered when the worst happens gets bounced around and we have all have a chuckle at the absurdity of it all. Next, we highlight a good old American company who is keeping the spirit of hot-rodding alive. Classic Performance Products makes a great deal of parts and accessories, but their newest item is a real sweet treat. They have developed a DIY bed shortening kit for the Ford F-100. Hardware, step-by-step video instructions, exact cut locations and measurements, making the entire setup a true weekend project. Hotrods will always have a special place in fella's hearts and highlighting the companies is always a labor of love. Staying in the Ford gear, the guys discuss factory performance upgrades and the benefits of OEM+. Ford is offering a plug-in engine and transmission upgrade that makes the 4 cylinder Bronco jump from 300 horsepower to a healthy 330 horsepower, matching that of the heavier, automatic only V6 Bronco. The fellas discuss the true potential and value available from Ford, when not a single bolt has to be removed and warranty stays intact. Finally, we dive into the 80s, 90s and 2000s Pacific Northwest car scene with Buddha Matsui. Buddha takes us through his youth, highlighting influences that cultivated his love of cars and sharpened his business skills. Buddha opens up about his father and the influence his father not only had on him, but on the world of denim / fashion as well. Buddha discusses the early days of car cruises and the creation of Syndicate Car Club when he was a young man. He then draws connections from the past to today, as he brings to light the successes he has had in the recreational cannabis industry and how the mindset of the car club and car community that club built, he tries to instill into his business practices and life everyday. Czinger is simply a phenomenon. He comes from a proud family of mechanics and drag racers in Cleveland who influenced his interests at an early age, and encouraged him to become a voracious reader. Kevin burst onto the scene from there. A lifelong learner at Yale, he received undergraduate and advanced degrees in biophysics, biochemistry, and electrical engineering at Yale and Arizona State. Afterward, Czinger cofounded a successful EV battery manufacturing company in California. “When first researching how to transform an internal combustion engine vehicle into an EV, Czinger realized, “I spent more on the conversion of that car than all the capital that we spent on technology development for that car.” Although uni-body construction systems were automated, they were also analog and not optimized. Czinger points out, “It's still the architecture of a fundamental analog system and here we have an industry being digitized everywhere except at its core.”Czinger knew he needed to figure out digital assembly to create an entirely new factory model and digital manufacturing system. So he did! Inspired by Kelly Johnson's pioneering work as the first team leader at Lockheed Skunkworks, Czinger shares his own gripping story. A blank slate, seven years, over 500+ distinct patents, and over $400M in invested capital, his 3D printed high performance C21 HyperCar just beat the McLaren P1 at the Laguna Seca Roadway by 6 seconds/ As Hutchison insightfully suggests during their multi-episode podcast, the two common ways people respond to this kind of massive disruption are through the lens of fear or opportunity. Czinger is clearly one of the latter-- a generational visionary who is leveraging his voracious American-born competitiveness to bring innovative technologies to scale. And Hutchison is equally passionate about bringing thought leaders together as she launches programming for the Centre. The US Centre for Advanced Manufacturing is a proud sponsor of DisruptED Advanced Manufacturing. As Hutchison shares, “We want to shine a light on advanced manufacturing here in the US.” It is electrifying listening to these two firsthand as Kevin's digital manufacturing system launches, as the world watches and takes notice.

Show Notes:  Groundbreaking heart disease treatment uses ultrasound-assisted lasers | Brighter Side News (01:21) Atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque, can lead to heart disease, artery disease, and chronic kidney disease and is traditionally treated by inserting and inflating a balloon to expand the artery.  Rohit Singh, of the University of Kansas, and other researchers developed a method that combines a low-power laser with ultrasound to remove arterial plaque safely and efficiently.  High-power laser treatments direct thermal energy to vaporize water in the artery and create a vapor bubble, which expands and collapses to break the plaque. The addition of irradiation from ultrasound causes the microbubbles to expand, collapse, and disrupt the plaque. Singh talks about the combo of laser treatment with ultrasounds:“In conventional laser angioplasty, a high laser power is required for the entire cavitation process, whereas in our technology, a lower laser power is only required for initiating the cavitation process … Overall, the combination of ultrasound and laser reduces the need for laser power and improves the efficiency of atherosclerotic plaque removal." Because it destroys rather than compresses the plaque, the combination technique will have a lower restenosis rate, or re-narrowing of the artery, compared to balloon angioplasty or stenting.Restenosis occurs when an artery that was opened with a stent or angioplasty becomes narrowed again. Singh and collaborators are also using the methodology for photo-mediated ultrasound therapy and ultrasound-assisted endovascular laser thrombolysis. Former can be used to remove abnormal microvessels in the eye to prevent blindness The latter can dissolve blood clots in veins.   Locusts can 'smell' human cancer cells | Futurity (05:54) Researchers, at Michigan State University, have shown that locusts can not only “smell” the difference between cancer cells and healthy cells, but they can also distinguish between different cancer cell lines. This work could provide the basis for devices that use insect sensory neurons to enable the early detection of cancer using only a patient's breath. The success of engineered devices can make it easy to overlook the performance of our natural tools, especially the sense organ right in front of our eyes. Why we trust dogs and their super-sniffers to detect telltale smells of drugs, and explosives Scientists are working on technology that can mimic the sense of smell, but nothing they've engineered can yet compete with the speed, sensitivity and specificity of old-fashioned biological olfaction.Olfaction: The sense of smell. Why not start with the solutions biology has already built after eons of evolution, and engineer from there? The research team is essentially “hacking” the insect brain to use it for disease diagnosis. Easily attach electrodes to locust brains The scientists then recorded the insects' responses to gas samples produced by healthy cells and cancer cells, and then used those signals to create chemical profiles of the different cells. How well could the locusts differentiate healthy cells from cancer cells using three different oral cancer cell lines?According to Christopher Contag, the director of IQ, “We expected that the cancer cells would appear different than the normal cells … But when the bugs could distinguish three different cancers from each other, that was amazing.” Although the team's results focused on cancers of the mouth, the researchers believe their system would work with any cancer that introduces volatile metabolites into breath, which is likely most cancer types. In biochemistry, a metabolite is an intermediate or end product of metabolism. The term metabolite is usually used for small molecules.  Let's end it off with a quote from Contag about early detection:“Early detection is so important, and we should use every possible tool to get there, whether it's engineered or provided to us by millions of years of natural selection … If we're successful, cancer will be a treatable disease.”   Scientists create first full map of human immune system connectivity | New Atlas (11:15) By using advanced screening methods to tune into the communications taking place between individual cells, scientists have produced the first full connectivity map of the human immune system. Will help researchers better understand the way different disease such as cancer progress, and work towards next-generation treatments Researchers at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and ETH Zurich have been working to establish a more comprehensive diagram of the immune system throughout the body. The breakthrough stems from new understanding of the signaling that takes place between different immune cells. Some of these patrol the body looking for signs of injury or disease, and then send messages to other immune cells to join the fight. Communication takes place through proteins on the surface of immune cells, which bind to receptor proteins on the surfaces of other cells. Mapping involved a technique called high-throughput surface receptor screening, which allowed them to map immune cell protein interactions on an unprecedented scale. This wiring diagram details how immune cells connect and communicate throughout the body and includes previously unknown interactions. Valuable insights into the way the body organizes its immune defenses,  May help efforts to develop treatments that increase their ability to fight disease, with immunotherapy for cancer a prime example. Additionally, it could offer a blueprint for the prevention and treatment of autoimmune diseases Let's end it off with a quote from Professor Gavin Wright, senior author, discussing the research:“Immunotherapies work with the body's immune system to combat diseases such as cancer and autoimmunity… They can be incredibly effective in certain groups of people, but not all, leaving some people without treatment. Our research, a culmination of over two decades of work, could hold the key to understanding why these treatments are more effective in some groups, and how they could be adapted to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from them.”   Flying car 'Switchblade' with foldable wings and a retractable tail gets FAA approval | Interesting Engineering (15:46) A flying sports car named Switchblade recently passed the safety tests of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and now it is ready for market launch. Oregon-based company Samson Sky claims it took 14 years to develop this innovative vehicle.  Can be easily parked inside a residential garage, and it is suitable for both roadside driving and flying. Not the first to receive approval from the FAA, but it might become the first flying car available to the public in the US.Already started taking online reservations for Switchblade, and over 1,600 people have already shown interest in buying the car.  The estimated starting price for Switchblade would be $150,000. The features of the Switchblade:Three-wheeler sports car that comes with foldable wings and a retractable tail Within three minutes, these flexible components can turn this roadside vehicle into a small aircraft Capable of flying at 16,000 feet (4.8 km) The top speed of this two-seater flying machine ranges between 125 mph (201 km/h) (on-road) and 200 mph (321 km/h) (during flight). Runs on 91 octane gasoline The official website of Samson Sky mentions that the car comes equipped with a hybrid electric drive and fly system, a climate-controlled cabin, front and rear crumple zones, and a parachute that covers the whole vehicle to ensure complete comfort and safety of its users. For instance, the vehicle has been approved by the FAA, but that only means that Samson Sky can sell this vehicle. Buyers might still need to get permission from local authorities before they drive or fly Switchblade for the first time since it is not an ordinary vehicle. Another difficulty, the Switchblade is a flying vehicle, and there is no company in the US that offers flying car insurance.Insurance laws in most American states require drivers to carry active vehicle insurance with them. Switchblade buyers might need to buy both car and aircraft insurance. What's interesting about this is that Switchblade isn't the only flying car that is ready to launch.  Real Flying Cars That Will Soon Take Flight There are companies working on this, and it would be fascinating to see which of them we see first on the road. List by Interesting Engineering of 14 other flying cars being developed:   Czinger's 3D-Printed 21C Hypercar Could Spark an Automaking Revolution | Robb Report (22:00) The $2 million, carbon-fiber-bodied, tandem-seat Czinger 21C astounds with specs—1,250 hp, zero to 62 mph in 1.9 seconds, a claimed top speed of 253 mphRecently blew away the McLaren P1's production-car track record at Circuit of the Americas by six seconds. However, more impressive is the hybrid's build process: The main structural components are designed by Czinger's proprietary AI software and then 3-D-printed.Co-founder Kevin Czinger, stated: “These structures cannot be made more perfect for the requirements inputted … You could have 1,000 engineers and they would never get to this solution.” Figuring out how to put these “perfect Lego blocks” together was tasked to Lukas Czinger, Kevin's son, who invented a fixtureless assembly systemNo part-specific fixture or tooling required to hold pieces in place during the robotic build. Additionally, the polymer team created an adhesive that bonded in under two seconds. The result is a 22-robot cell that doesn't have to be retooled from one application to another, meaning the same hardware can transition from creating a rear frame to a full chassis with only a software change—a potentially revolutionary new approach to manufacturing.

The 2021 Barret Jackson Auto Auction in Las Vegas was one to remember. With a record-breaking $48 million in sales, it would seem that there is quite a market for unique automobiles. It has always intrigued me that in the auto world it seems that the items of the highest auction block value can be relatively new production cars or just as easily classics from 70 years ago. In this most recent auction, three wildly different autos broke the 1 million dollar ceiling. They were a 2015 Mclaren P1, a 1957 Mercedes 300SL Roadster, and a 2019 Ford GT. All amazing vehicles, feats of modern engineering and technology, lovingly cared for, and I'd imagine prized possessions of their owners. I am Joel Penkala and this is 10 Minutes on the Philosophy of Gun Restoration. You might be saying, what's this got to do with guns, but bear with me. From what I can gather, the McLaren and the Ford GT are likely original condition vehicles. The GT had 21 miles on the odometer so that's a safe bet. The 2015 McLaren probably had more miles, but chances are it was still near original. Now we come to the 1957 Mercedes 300SL. The Mercedes, though a stunning original example, is clearly no longer in original condition. I pulled a bit from the write up on the auction website  “After a careful mechanical overview, new sway bar bushings and new motor mounts were installed, and the brakes were serviced, cleaned and adjusted. During the brake inspection, it was noted that there were no leaks and correct materials were used during restoration. Finished in the iconic 300SL color combination of DB 180 Silver Gray Metallic with a red leather interior. The silver paint was mixed with the correct metallic flake and was uniformly applied. The finish remains glossy and smooth with only light signs of use since the restoration.” I would argue that based on this single example (forgive the small sample size) that restored vehicles can and do command attention and dollars on the auction block. It seems though, in the world of classic firearms, a “restored” version commands a different value than one in “original condition” even if “proper finish and the correct materials”  are used during restoration. I'll admit that I am looking at this question of gun restoration from the ruby lens of my own experience. I got into gunsmithing and have spent countless hours performing restoration services on my own guns. Dad and I were always looking for a ”gunsmith special”; a shotgun or rifle that was abused and misused, but still had the potential to be brought back. This desire was motivated by our own financial limitations, or I should say my financial limitations restricted what I could buy. Any gun in high condition was hard to justify. Not to mention they did not afford the opportunity to do what it was that we set out to do- work on guns. Tear them down, learn how they work. Fix parts, replace parts, make parts. We endeavored to find a project that represented a challenge and pitted our own abilities (pun intended) against these relics relegated to the parts pile. It would be hard to condemn us for what we did. The majority of our projects were inoperable, sold to us as ‘parts guns'. More than once I had to sign a paper that stated that I would not use a gun I was buying until I had it looked at by a competent gunsmith. But, in my reading, I would come to find that there was a contingent of folks in the gun world that seemed to question the philosophy of restoration. If they didn't, why was it so important that a Parker I looked at on gunsinternational was a “DelGrego restoration”. And why is that restoration deemed less valuable than an original gun?  Perhaps I am a victum of my own desire, creating my own reality so to speak. I know that even in those early days I could recognize a ‘hack job' garage special. A replaced forearm that is clearly not to original spec. Maybe made of maple instead of walnut. Or an action that has been blued where the original was case color- or worse, spraypainted black. I'd like to think that the work we did was at the very least, in the image of the guns original condition. Sure I didn't have the ability to case harden the action on my single shot 20ga project. It was early in the Dad and Lad gunsmithign days, and heat treating was beyond our abilities at the time. Even still, we determined how to chemical color the action using some heat and products at our disposal. Is it truly original? No of course not, but the results provided created a gun that is far more pleasing to the eye. I have had the opportunity to hold a number of restorations, from a variety of talented folks. I do believe that if a restoration is completed in a way that remains true to how the guns were delivered from the factory, there is merit to this work. There is so much nuance to this process though, starting from knowing exactly what a gun looked like, from the factory. What shades and colors were produced by factory case hardening? Were the patterns striped or blotchy? Were the barrels a deep dark blue or were they more black? Shiny or a bit dull? What checkering patterns were used and what lines per inch were they? I am as guilty of this lack of knowledge as any other hack job garage smith. I don't necessarily know what the gun looked like when I start my work. Perhaps this is because I understand that my work will never be a true restoration in that sense. I am in the business of bringing a gun back from the grave. Perhaps, with a lifetime of practice, I could hone my skills to the level of factory original. At this point in time, I don't have the desire or inclination to replicate the work of the original craftsmen. My restorations are my own and will carry my mistakes and lack of abilities along with them. A field grade LC Smith, 12 gauge, with no case color, little blue, and checkering so worn that the lines are nearly gone carries little value. When the gun came to me it was inoperable. I am in the process of recutting the checkering, and to be honest, rather than sanding off what is clearly non-original lines, I am simply chasing what is there. This would be a travesty for some folks, and so it may be. It is my belief that this gun might have had a worse fate if it had not landed in my hands. A restored field grade LC does not carry the value to justify the cost (aka time) to do a proper restoration. Unless of course, the gun carries other value- sentimental value most likely- that might justify the expense. In my time working in a gunsmithing shop, there were several guns that came to us needing copious amounts of work, that would far exceed the value of the gun- restored or not. It was my job to explain to those folks that they were on the losing end of a deal, and to do so gently so as not to offend anyone's sensibilities. Typically the discussion would go about as I have laid out so far though the x-factor was always the history with the gun. Was it your fathers, or grandfather's? Had it been handed down over many generations? I saw guns that had been damaged at the hands of their current custodians. The guilt of damaging a family heirloom is a strong motivator to open one's wallet and spend the money required to make repairs.  History and provenance always factor into perceived value. The Mclaren sold at the Barret Auction was owned by Deadmau5, a very successful DJ. I am sure that the celebrity history of the vehicle added to its value. The same way that a particular F Grade AH Fox Shotgun could sell for a whopping $862,500. Now, at the time of this podcast, William Larken Moore has a very fine 12 gauge AH Fox FE for sale- a Philly gun made in 1907. It's likely that you guessed what I am driving at- the difference between these two guns mechanically may be small, but the difference between these guns owners is very large indeed and reflected in their price. I suspect that the William Larken Gun was never owned by Teddy Roosevelt. For fun, I looked at the most expensive Fox on Gunsinternational. A $64,000 12 gauge Fox made for William Gough, serial number 6500. William Gough was an engraver himself and an engraver's son. He worked on Fox, Parker, Winchester, Remington, Marlin, Colt, Meriden, and Aubrey and is a celebrity of note in the gun world. The most interesting thing about this gun though - it is a copy. It has been upgraded and made to look like the original gun. This is noted in the Gunsinternational listing but brings up the not so pretty topic of fakes, imitations, humped-up guns. The underbelly of the gun world- and the art world, fashion world, car world, and so on. I do believe this is part of the issue folks have with restorations. For all but the well trained, a gun can be made to look original, or more than original, a Field Grade gun can be upgraded to a lettered grade. Or as is the case here, upgraded to mirror a gun with history- with provenance.  And herein lies the bigger issue with restored guns. Its a catch 22 of sorts. A good restoration is one that brings the gun back to its original condition- as it was the day it left the factory. And the best restoration may pass as an original. The problem is when people take advantage of the fact that restorations can be done so well, it is nearly, if not completely impossible to tell the difference.  It is worth noting that in Europe, particularly in England, it was commonplace to send your gun back to the maker for upkeep. They did not call this a restoration- primarily because the gun was returning to the maker- the original manufacturer - for reapplication of the original finish. Barrels were rebrowned or reblacked. Stocks were attended to- dings and dents steamed and removed, checkering pointed and oil finishes reapplied. Although I am sure there are original examples of guns from across the pond, it is clear that most guns were cleaned up over the years and the view of what it meant to have a gun in original condition is rather different than here in the states. Most guns here never made it back to the factory for refurbishing- either because the service was not offered or because the maker was no out of business. The complexities of the collector gun world abound. Original, restored, or upgraded, with provenance and celebrity status or not, guns like cars will always have a value that is not simply based on their mechanics. Upgrading a gun may be a gateway to have a facsimile of an original, at a fraction of the price, although like many human endeavors it is when nefarious intent clouds one's vision that this practice goes off the rails. It is one thing to upgrade a gun and represent it as such. It is completely different to upgrade a gun and/or knowingly misrepresent it as original. The world of firearms restoration is multifaceted, the idea of upgrading guns even more so. I believe that there is certainly a place for firearm restoration. The idea of bringing something back to life appeals to those of us who enjoy shotguns and rifles both in the field AND when they are apart on our bench. Not to mention the joy I find when I hunt with a gun that I have restored to function. There is something special in those moments afield, which for me, have been inextricably woven into the fabric of my life.

Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 16th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   My news yesterday that I had quit my day job, and indeed a 25 year radio career, seemed to resonate with people. Either those who had done something similar to chase a dream or those who wanted to.   So to those on Patreon…   JON BEARDY MCBEARDFACE (PARTNER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) WALTER MACVANE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON KNODEL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BORISLAV BORISOV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JEFF ERBES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)   WILLIAM ANZUETO (PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (PRODUCER) i3 AND 7KW OF PV! MARK GARNETT (PRODUCER) STE BIRKETT (PRODUCER) – FOUND ME RECENTLY MARTY YOUNG (PRODUCER)   BRUCE HARRISON R W SAVAGE     CLARIFICATION ON THE HARLEY DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE From Sabrina Giacomini at RideApart.com: "However, in recent years, innovation hasn’t been part of the brand’s lingo—its almost as though it’s been sitting on its legacy and relying on that and only that to sell bikes. The LiveWire had the potential to change that and open new doors. While it hasn’t completely failed, I don't believe it has succeeded either. The way I see it, there are 2 reasons for that and here's my two cent about it." So what are those two reasons? And is one of them the range which I told you was my main let down. "Today, people have access to more electric models options than ever and while 110 miles is a decent range for an electric bike, it might not be enough for the LiveWire to stand out of the stylish, efficient, and affordable electric motorcycle crowd. Because now we all know: an electric orange comes at a price. The company announced on Monday that the LiveWire was on track to hit the showrooms this year and that the price tag would be set at $29,799. With young adults dealing with more debt than ever, $30k will be better spent on purchasing a car (or groceries) than a bike." "The company did have the opportunity to bring Alta Motors on board, a well-established competitor in the field of electric bikes that likely would have propelled H-D forward in its electric ambitions. Would a partnership have resulted in a cheaper LiveWire? Maybe not, but Alta's contribution to the project could have meant a sweeter deal for the money." So i got it wrong with 59 miles, I don't think i was looking at the correct number. The Harley website says: "The high-voltage battery, or RESS, provides an estimated 110 miles of range, measured using the MIC mixed-use cycle. Riding range estimates based on current SAE testing of LiveWire concept motorcycle. Actual riding range will vary based on several factors including weather and driving conditions."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/300795/weekend-wtf-harley-davidson-livewire/   https://www.harley-davidson.com/gb/en/motorcycles/future-vehicles/livewire.html   LYNK & CO'S HATCHBACK DROPS MAJOR CAMO IN NEW SPY PICS "Lynk & Co is progressing with the development of its fourth model which will take the shape of a compact hatchback. This fresh batch of spy photos reveals the company is in the advanced stages of testing as its prototype is featuring less and less camouflage." reports Anthony for Motor1.com: "According to unconfirmed information, the model will be based on the architecture that will also underpin Volvo’s upcoming revamped 40 series of compact cars. The Swedish hatch and small wagon are rumored to go fully electric, but that won’t be the case with Lynk & Co’s sibling. It may seem like a conventional ICE-powered vehicle but underneath the skin should be a compact plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. This system should be good for a purely electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers)"   https://www.motor1.com/news/300930/lynk-co-hatchback-spied/   JAGUAR AFFIRMS FORMULA E COMMITMENT DESPITE IMPENDING CUTS "Jaguar Land Rover revealed last week that it will cut 4,500 jobs from its global operations, with the majority of them hitting management roles in the UK and the company set to start a voluntary redundancy programme." says Alex Kalinauckas for Motor1.com: "But [James] Barclay, the FE squad’s team principal, stated that Jaguar would carry on racing for the “longer-term” as it fits with the manufacturer’s recent drive towards electrification on its road car models. "It’s an unprecedented time for the car industry,” he told Motorsport.com: “A lot of geopolitical factors are affecting the industry at the moment – a slowdown in China, slowdown in diesel sales and we have that small matter of Brexit in the UK, which is affecting consumer confidence. So, we have to take some key decisions now to protect the long-term future of our company. [It’s] really important we make those steps now. But at the same time, we also announced that we’ll be building electric drive units at our engine manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton and also building a battery plant in Birmingham."   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/jaguar-fe-commitment-job-cuts/4323781/   GAC MOTOR UNVEILS CONCEPT CAR ENTRANZE GAC Motor officially announced that it has registered its North American Sales Company in Irvine, Calif., near Los Angeles. The regional headquarters will be responsible for branding, marketing, product planning and financial affairs. GAC Motor also announced at the press conference that the GAC R&D Center Detroit has officially begun operation. Located in Farmington Hills, Mich., the new R&D center was built with an investment of US$ 4.4 million and encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of real estate. And as for their new electric concept, it's the ENTRANZE. "The Slick Bullet shaped exterior is completely breathtaking in the real flesh and introduces brand new proportions. New 3+2+2 seating arrangement and ‘aircraft inspired aisle’. Two-side mounted displays for functional feature control, plus curved displays for passenger entertainment. With most of the car made of environmentally sustainable materials, the interior of ENTRANZE is more influenced by home decoration than cars and is a great contrast to the technology and the stark exterior."   https://insideevs.com/gac-entranze-naias-photos-videos/   RENAULT EXPANDS ZOE FLEET IN ZITY CAR SHARING IN SPAIN "The new electric car sharing service Zity in Madrid, Spain turns out to be very popular as 157,000 people used it in the first year." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The fleet of 500 Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 is soon to be expanded by another 150 ZOE to 650 total by the end of January. We don’t know the number of trips, but as many customers were using Zity more than once, it’s maybe on the track to profitability."   https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-fleet-zity-car-sharing-in-spain/   WHY THE MCLAREN P1 IS A LIVING LEGEND "The 903bhp McLaren P1 is now six years old but remains an awe-inspiring machine. Motorious hosted the McLaren halo car at Autosport International 2019" says AutoClassics.com. Although it's not a Plug In car, it was a very early hybrid supercar. Using the Formula-1 inspired hybrid technology for performance, it was the first of a new breed. These days no supercar would be complete without a big battery so help out the wheezing old fossil engine. And since then we've had fully electric supercars from the likes of the Rimac Concept One, and the Rimac C_Two.   https://www.autoclassics.com/posts/reviews/mclaren-p1-motorious   BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT ON EVS "The day after Christmas, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us an unexpected gift. Brake pads on Teslas would “literally never” need to be replaced, he said, thanks in part to the electric car’s regenerative brakes cutting way down on brake pad use compared to a conventional car. That seemed a little too good to be true! But maybe not impossible, exactly" said Erik Shilling of Jalopnik. But then he asked, would an EV maker really say you never need to replace them? He asked Jaguar who said: "The brake pads on the I-PACE do indeed need to be replaced periodically. As you might imagine, the rate at which this is required varies widely owner to owner, based on his/her individual driving style. The battery must be below approximately 80% state of charge in order to receive the full benefit of the resistance of the electric motors. The idea here is that we can’t overcharge the battery and force additional electrons in, if it’s already full, so the resistance provided by the motors gradually does decrease the fuller the battery is requiring the use of the standard braking system." And Erik asked GM: "The regenerative braking feature of the Bolt EV allows the vehicle to decelerate with less use of the vehicle’s base hydraulic brake system. However, the actual mileage that the brake lining’s life could be extended varies due to the parameters under which the vehicle is driven." The online classified marketplace said the proportion of fuel related searches attributed to diesel on Auto Trader has dropped from a high of 71% in November 2016, to a record low of 47% last month." in a new MotorTrader.com article: "Annually, between 2017 and 2018, there was a 40% increase in consumers searching for AFVs, with electric alone recording a spike of 52%. The automaker increased its max payout per reported bug to $15,000 last year and it also took a great step in reassuring owners who are hacking their own vehicles. Tesla said that it will not void its warranty when a vehicle is hacked for “pre-approved good faith security research:” But now the top prize being offered is even more valuable, a free car to the winner of a hacking contest.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/14/tesla-model-3-giveaway-hacker/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Some heavy heavy topics for the first letter of our Formula 1 A-Z series! First we’ll start out with acceleration, G forces, and performance generally. I’ll do my best to compare to a top road car – the McLaren P1 – just to give you an idea of the insanity of Formula 1. Next we’ll dive in to aerodynamics talking generally about downforce and drag, then into a bit of history on Formula 1 and then into modern aerodynamics and some of the loopholes in the formula that teams have leapt through with clever aerodynamic developments. Finally we’ll wrap up with Fernando Alonso. He’s an impressive driver who has won the Driver’s Championship twice – though honestly it should be more. There’s a fascinating article about how Ferrari orchestrated Alonso’s demise at the team in order to scoop up Sebastian Vettel, leaving Alonso with no choice but to head back to McLaren. He’s also in pursuit of the Triple Crown of Motorsport. Read today’s show notes on www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 16th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   DELIVERY TIMES ARE DROPPING FOR NEW TESLA MODEL 3 ORDERS The delivery times for the Tesla Model 3 keep coming down. One of your fellow listeners emailed me last week to say between Design Studio and email saying it was complete, was 10 days. But that seems unlikely for most. "Delivery times for a new Tesla Model 3 order have been dropped to as little as a month in the US, down from the 3-5 month delivery window that was previously in place" report TechCrunch: "Both the long-range rear-wheel model (until recently the only one in production) and the performance dual-motor model are now showing delivery times of 1-3 months. That leaves the long-range dual-motor model configuration, yours in approximately 2-4 months once you've put your cash down. This is just a few days after orders were opened up to everyone in the US, reservation or not."   https://www.techradar.com/news/delivery-times-are-dropping-for-new-tesla-model-3-orders   ELECTRIC POWER DOMINATES AT GOODWOOD Chinese car maker NIO, which builds the EP9 with 1,342hp getting 0-60mph out the way in 2.7 seconds. "Nio EP9's electric hypercar has set the fastest time for a street-legal car in the Goodwood Festival of Speed's famous hill climb" says MotorAuthority: "The car ran a time of 44.61 seconds during Saturday's Supercar shootout event, which eclipsed the previous time of 47.07 set by a McLaren P1. The EP9, like the P1 LM, isn't a regular production car, as just 16 examples are planned. Also, the car's street-legal tires were swapped out for racing slicks for this weekend's hill climb. Still, the EP9's run was incredible and a true sign that electric cars have the potential to rewrite the rule book on performance."   Meanwhile the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak Racer is still setting records. "Having smashed the all-time record at Pikes Peak last month, the I.D. R was expected to be among the quickest runners at the 2018 Festival of Speed - and it hasn't let the side down. On Saturday, with Roman Dumas again driving, it whined its way to a 43.05 secs time over the famed 1.1-mile course, shattering the previous record for electric cars." reports Nic Cackett for pistonheads.com: "On Sunday the I.D. R and Dumas repeated the feat in the final shootout, managing a 43.86 secs run to make it the first electric car to win the event outright. In a sign of the times, it was an electric car in second place, too - the remarkable NIO EP9"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs1SMr2A5q4   NEW YORK EPRIX: VERGNE WINS FINALE, AUDI TEAMS’ CHAMPIONS "Newly-crowned Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne won a thrilling season-ending New York ePrix on Sunday, but his victory wasn’t enough to seal the teams’ title for his Techeetah squad." writes Alex Kalinauckas for Motorsport.com: "The race took place in hot and sunny conditions – in stark contrast to the wet weather from earlier in the day, which at one point caused organisers to temporarily suspend the event due to the threat of lightening in the area – although that weather threat disappeared and the race took place as scheduled. Vergne led the 43-lap race from the first corner after muscling his way from third on the grid past polesitter Sebastien Buemi on the run to Turn 1."   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/new-york-eprix-vergne-wins-finale-audi-teams-champion-1060418/?r=191987&em=1   MORE MODEL 3 VINS "#Tesla registered 3,424 new #Model3 VINs. ~100% estimated to be dual motor. Highest VIN is 75464"   Tim Anderson: "The production burst they’ve had at the end of every quarter has been the average production of the following quarter for a while now. My guess is 60k M3’s and at least 20k S & X for a minimum total of 80k cars produced (& likely delivered)."   Dirk Podolak: "Tesla registered 48k VINs in the first half of 2018. Now they registered 19k VINs in the first half of July alone. Guys, that will be an awesome Q3."   JUNE 2018 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLE SALES IN THE US Electric Car Report updated their June sales tracker at 10:15am yesterday morning, on Sunday: "All major automakers reported June sales numbers for electrified vehicles. Numbers are considerably higher than the totals in June 2017. For the month, more than 25,200 electrified vehicles were sold". Checking on the InsideEVs Scorecard, 2018 June was 25,179 compared to 17,046 June 2017.     COMMUNITY Brian Weatherall.   You can listen to all previous 181 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
