I don't worship the player. I don't worship the card. But, I'll admit that my ardor and enthusiasm for card collecting has the potential to distract me from what matters most. Still, I'm a long way from idolatry. I want no part of an aniconistic world view where visual representations of figures are a punishable offense, but if this episode should be my last, you'll know why. We also look at a few lesser lights from the 1984 US Olympic Baseball team: Oddibe McDowell, Cory Snyder, and Billy Swift. Buddy Bell was the greatest American League third baseman of his generation not named George Brett, and Bell provides the portal for a gratuitous highlight of the "life swap" between Yankees' pitchers Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich (full story here: https://www.pablo.show/p/the-yankee-wife-swap-scandal). A's reliever Bill Caudill strikes out the side, and we end with the time when Tommy Lasorda and Giants manager Charlie Fox got into a fistfight while exchanging lineup cards at home plate.

Charlie Fox and Chloé Mazzani presented a project that they are currently working on at a session at ICAF that looked at four of the practical outcomes of the Faro Convention. The project springs from concern for the health of the river running through Marseilles, and during their presentation they discussed the idea of the river as a non-human living entity that can heal itself but can never return to a pristine state of grace. In this episode Owen Kelly talks with Charlie Fox about issues of culture, democracy, and the relationships between people and the non-human that from the perspective of the Marseilles River Project. They discuss work of the work of les Collectif des Gammares; and the need for humility and a recognition that we live inside the natural world, as one part of it, as opposed to the hubris often involved in trying to fix desperate situations that we ourselves have caused.

Adam and Will are joined by New York-based artist and tattooer Will Sheldon. Will discusses his work with us: paintings and drawings of fantastical and fairy tale imagery but with a uniquely troubling and dark iteration fitting for our times. Will is also a tattooer and in contra to others working between the art world and tattoo culture (others typically tend to make clear distinction between the craft of tattooing and high art OR end up making tattooish art work) manages to create a clear communicative language between art and tattoos. We discuss this idiosyncrasy, Will's recent exhibitions, Will's recent collaborative book with British writer Charlie Fox, Hans Bellmer, and a shared appreciation for manga artist and filmmaker Hideshi Hino and Charlie Sheen's issues with Hino. Fr. Charlie Fox joins Men of the Hearts to talk about his own vocation story, as well as formation, what it really is, and why it's so important. Show notes: (0:42) Fr. Craig introduces this month's guest, Fr. Charlie Fox, who's about to move into a new position at Sacred Heart as the Vice Rector. (3:39) Fr. Fox shares some of the blessings he's experienced over the past month, including his preaching bootcamp, which helps seminarians become more skilled and comfortable with public speaking. Fr. David updates from his last month as well; his parish has just celebrated their Confirmations and First Communions. (8:38) Fr. Craig asks Fr. Fox about any special gifts or talents he has, and Fr. Fox shares about his love of writing and his experiences writing for the greater Catholic community, as well as some of his exploits in writing as a seminarian at Sacred Heart. (14:40) Fr. Fox shares his vocation story. He talks of growing up in an Irish Catholic family in Detroit and Redford and the gentle encouragement he always had from his parents to consider the priesthood. He also stresses the significance the Eucharist and the Mass had in his discernment. (23:42) Fr. Fox explains what he was thinking, hearing, and feeling when discerning his vocation and when he has very specifically heard the Lord speaking to him and quelling his doubts. Fr. Fox and Fr. Craig reflect on the importance of commitment and closeness with the Lord throughout the discernment process. (30:51) Fr. Craig asks if Fr. Fox was looking for any signs before he entered the seminary, and Fr. Fox says no, but that he was looking for inner clarity and certainty and he discusses the moral certitude often discussed when talking about vocations. (35:26) Fr. Fox talks about his life at the seminary, the fraternity and education at Sacred Heart, and the formation experiences he had during that time. Fr. Craig shares memories of sitting in the refectory with older seminarians and getting to know them as role models. Fr. Fox adds that the like-minded community found in the seminary is a great reinforcement to one's vocation. (41:59) Fr. Fox defines formation as development as a man of God first and a priest according to the priesthood of Jesus second. He mentions the role of formation in developing habits in prayer and smoothing out our rough edges. He also discusses the four pillars of formation: spiritual, intellectual, apostolic, and human. (48:36) Fr. Craig asks what formators and admissions boards are looking for in a seminarian, and Fr. Fox responds that men should be able to live in the program with peace and joy and can engage in the communal and academic life of the seminary. He remarks that the most important thing is that a man has confidence that God is calling him to the priesthood. (51:33) Fr. David talks about Formation Saturday, a program Fr. Fox put on that featured talks on a pillar of formation from a different priest each week. (56:52) Fr. Fox offers advice to men who are discerning the priesthood: don't be afraid to take the next step. He encourages men to think not in terms of choosing between A and B, but of what the deeper choice of Jesus is in one's life. He then closes in prayer.

Egg God joins the show to talk about the state of contemporary poetry and the culture around it, AOC's emotional warfare and offensive pattern of lying, and his recent Twink Revolution essay 'What Gregg Araki Was Trying to Say,' which leads to a discussion on commercial art at the end of history, and the liquidation of modernism and the avant-garde. There is only one. Fernando Pessoa 'Autopsychography' The poet is a man who feigns And feigns so thoroughly, at last He manages to feign as pain The pain he really feels, And those who read what once he wrote Feel clearly, in the pain they read, Neither of the pains he felt, Only a pain they cannot sense. I’ll tell you more and thank them at the end. If you get any value at all out of this show, whether you learn something or it entertains you, I’ll give you those details at the end. I love free stuff, you love free stuff, this show will always be free, it’s totally optional and not something I want you to think about. But let’s start with the news… EV CHARGERS FOR BIRMIGNHAM Alabama’s busiest airport is adding a new convenience for travellers with electric cars: free vehicle chargers. Officials say nine new chargers are being added in the parking deck at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Three of the chargers are in the hourly section, and six are in an area used for long-term parking" according to YellowHammerNews: "The new units resulted from a partnership between the Birmingham Airport Authority and Alabama Power Co. A statement says Birmingham becomes the first passenger airport in the state with chargers for electric vehicles. The airport has more than 120 daily departures on five airlines." EV FAST CHARGER RIBBON CUTTING August 7 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. "America’s Car Museum are proud to kick-off this first new electric vehicle fast charger at a car museum along the I-5 corridor as part of the West Coast Electric Highway. With historic vehicles dating back to early electric powered cars, today America’s Car Museum is bringing in a new generation of electric vehicles as it unveils the newest fast-charging station at the city’s entrance." https://pluginamerica.org/event/ev-fast-charger-ribbon-cutting/ TOP 5 EV'S COMING BY 2020 Fred at Electrek has been making a list, and we all love a good Top 5. This time it's the Top 5 cars coming by 2020: "Electric cars that will either be affordable and/or that will disrupt entire segments or even the industry as a whole." "5: VW I.D. Concept - For now, the vehicle is only known as the VW I.D. Concept, but it might end up being called ‘Neo’. VW is planning to release a production version in 2020 based on the concept that they revealed in 2016." "4: Mercedes-Benz EQC - By the time the EQC comes out next year, there will be 3 or 4 all-electric options in its segment, which doesn’t make it very unique, but I think it will result in electric vehicles taking over a lot (maybe even most) market shares of premium SUVs." "3: Volvo all-electric XC40 - Not much is known about the vehicle just yet, but Volvo’s latest CUV platform was built from the ground up to support several types of powertrains – including an all-electric on." "2: Porsche Taycan - I especially like the Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E, for its potential to convince hardcore petrolheads, like many Porsche fanatics, of the advantages of going electric." "1: Tesla Roadster - Tesla is bringing back the Roadster with a new generation of the vehicle that launched the company over 10 years ago. The first production car to get a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds, quarter-mile under9 seconds, and a top speed of over 250 mph." https://electrek.co/2018/08/04/5-most-exciting-electric-cars-2-years/ NISSAN THINKS MILD HYBRIDS WILL SOON BE OBSOLETE "Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi all have experience building hybrids and electric vehicles, so the alliance is well-positioned to introduce new models. Renault-Nissan advanced product planning manager Warwick Daly expects 35% of Nissan’s European sales to be electrified by 2025 with the goal for 20% of sales coming from plug-in hybrids by 2020." according to CarBuzz.com: "We want to stay ahead of the curve,” said Daly, adding his opinion that “the mild hybrid will start to become obsolete. Our electrification offer will change over time." Clearly, plug-ins and EVs will play a more significant role moving forward for Nissan. “The Leaf will play a bigger role,” Daly said, pointing out that the new car is selling at a 40% higher volume than the previous model. As SUVs grow in popularity, it only makes sense to give the Leaf an SUV sibling. https://carbuzz.com/news/nissan-thinks-mild-hybrids-will-soon-be-obsolete CENTRICA PLUGS INTO ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING SECTOR TO FUEL RECOVERY "Britain's biggest energy provider is taking its smart electricity drive on the road with the company’s first major investment in electric vehicle charging." says Jillian Ambrose, www.telegraph.co.uk: "In the coming days, the FTSE 100 owner of British Gas, is expected to unveil a multimillion-pound investment in a software company that already helps to power more than 200,000 drivers in the US and Europe. Sources close to Centrica said the investment in Israeli start-up Driivz will accelerate its “smart” energy system ambitions, from the home into the burgeoning market for electric vehicles." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/08/04/centrica-plugs-electric-car-charging-sector-fuel-recovery/ TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSOLD ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CARS COMBINED "Model 3 not only outsold particular models (all passenger cars except for maybe seven), but for example, it outsold all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars – ≈8,500 (SUVs excluded). Mercedes-Benz sold in total just 20,034 vehicles in July (down 22.7%)." https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-outsold-all-mercedes-benz-cars-combined/ TESLA, THE MODEL 3... AND THE MARKET Enrique Dans from Forbes.com says: "The Tesla 3 may not be a car for the masses, but there are major savings to be made: tax breaks, fuel, maintenance and resale, along with advantages such as free parking and access to lanes for high occupancy vehicles. In short, households that cover more than 20,000 kilometers per year should think seriously about buying a Tesla Model 3. But if you’re considering buying an electric vehicle, any electric vehicle, and you find that the sales person is trying to put you off doing so and convincing you to buy a petrol car instead, ask yourself: why might that be? If Tesla succeeds in holding onto the top spot this month in the hypercompetitive luxury car middle segment then we could be witnessing a tipping point: an extremely traditional market deeply attached to fossil fuel vehicles that’s beginning to realize that electric is not only cool but also makes a lot of sense. It appears that 12% of the VINs were skipped (invalid response for dual motor AND single motor), however, they have since been updated by Tesla." "#Tesla registered 7,903 new #Model3 VINs. ~100% estimated to be dual motor. Highest VIN is 89107. https://t.co/OZqpp8nPjs — Model 3 VINs (@Model3VINs) August 5, 2018 JAGUAR I-PACE TARGETING MERCEDES TAXIS IN GERMANY "Jaguar's I-Pace electric car has Germany's famous Mercedes-Benz taxis in its sights" writes Dominik Wilde for Motor1.com: "The British firm's debut battery-powered effort has delivered 10 of the crossovers to Munich's biggest taxi operator recently. Mercedes-Benz has much of the German Taxi market covered, with around 60 percent of the country's taxis being Mercedes, many of which are E-Classes that are roughly half the price of the Jaguar. A comparable Mercedes, the EQ C crossover, won't be launched until next year." "Jaguar's taxis are part of a plan by the city of Munich – which is the hometown of rival brand BMW –to reduce area pollution. Rides in the new cars will be subsidized by the city council too, with it paying 20 cents per kilometre travelled. Munich has one of the highest levels of pollution from diesel vehicles among German cities and could introduce bans on older cars." https://www.motor1.com/news/261217/jaguar-i-pace-targeting-mercedes-taxis/ HYUNDAI REALISING AN ELECTRIC DREAM "Early demand for this Kona Electric is the highest of any new Hyundai ever introduced. Already the Korean firm is worried it might not even be able to keep up with that demand." an article by Nat Barnes in the Express Newspaper said today: "Very few Kona sales are expected to be the lesser 39kWh model though, and the monthly price difference of the 64kWh model will be minimal on a finance plan. "There is a smart regeneration mode, strangely found deep within the trip computer settings which uses the road gradient and traffic levels to automatically choose and adapt a setting for you. This latter mode sounds ideal but the reality is that on the road its constant second-guessing quickly becomes frustrating. The manual settings are a far more preferable option." Debbi Mack interviews thriller author Zoë Sharp on the Crime Cafe podcast. The transcript is below, if you'd like to read it. Debbi: Hi everyone! This is the Crime Cafe, your podcasting source of great crime, suspense and thriller writing. I am your host, Debbi Mack. Before I bring on my guest, let me remind you that The Crime Cafe 9 Book Set is available for sale at all major and some minor online retailers. The Crime Cafe Short Story Anthology is also available online for sale and it's $0.99 for the anthology and $1.99 for the boxed set, so check it out. Just go to debbimack.com and look under “Crime Cafe” or “Books” to find the books there. And with that, I would like to now introduce an author who created one of the most awesome female protagonists ever. The character is Charlie Fox and the author is Zoe Sharp. Zoe, it's great to have you here today! Zoe: Thank you very much for inviting me, Debbi. It's a pleasure to be here. Debbi: I can't tell you how happy I am to have you on! So, you have one of the most fascinating bios ever! You actually wrote your first novel at 15? Zoe: I did! It dates me horribly to say my father typed it up with carbon copies. And it went out to publishers and received what's known in the trade as rave rejections. So, it still sits in a box in the attic and my father, bless him, keeps threatening to get it out and put it on eBay. Debbi: Oh, that's so cool! Zoe: At which point I remind him that it won't be long before I am choosing his nursing home and he should be nice to me. Debbi: Good for you! And you became a photojournalist. I think that's very cool and you mention that Charlie Fox grew out of the death threats you received as a photojournalist. What was that about? Zoe: Yes! That was, that was a weird set of circumstances. I was working in the motoring field. I was involved with a lot of auto magazines and I was sent to see a collection of cars with a guy. When I arrived two things happened. The guy was very surprised to see that I was not on my own as he was clearly expecting, and the collection of cars did not exist. So, it was around the time when a real estate agent in the UK, called Suzy Lamplugh, who'd gone to show a client around a vacant house, and was never seen again. And the death threat letters started, you know, shortly after that incident. And I was kind of wondering whether it was the guy who'd been hoping to get me on my own. So, it tends to concentrate your mind. Started me learning an awful lot of self-defense. But it also sort of sparked off the character of Charlie Fox. Debbi: Well I can just imagine. That must have been very scary. Zoe: It was first annoying and only afterwards when the ramifications sank in did it get a lot more scary. Debbi: [laughs] Yeah. Well I love Charlie Fox. When I was a kid watching action movies, it was always the women who put themselves in harm's way and who would do what I would call “tripping over their shoelaces”. Running with the man and then they would fall or something. Zoe: Yes, always sprain their ankle. Debbi: Exactly! They would need some sort of help. But, I've always enjoyed strong women on movies and on TV. When I was a kid I used to watch The Avengers and I just loved Mrs. Peel and, and Honey West. I'm dating myself now. But… Zoe: It was exactly those kind of characters that I wanted to get to with Charlie Fox. And it still bugs me that even now you have to specify that a female character is strong. Debbi: Yes. Zoe: Whereas you don't have to do that with a male character. Nobody ever describes, you know, Lee Child's Jack Reacher as a strong male character because you just, you kind of assume that unless there is something very specific about the character, he is going to be strong just by the very fact that he's male. So, I like to write about capable female characters and even in the stand alone, I've done the female character of Kelly Jacks, is still very capable and,
This week Sinéad Gleeson hears about Hopdance, the autobiographical novel by playwright Stewart Parker. She speaks to Charlie Fox about monsters, freaks and beasts.

Charles Ira Fox (born October 30, 1940) is an American composer for film and television. His most heard compositions are probably the "love themes" (the sunshine pop musical backgrounds which accompanied every episode of the 1970s ABC-TV show Love, American Style), and the dramatic theme music to ABC's Wide World of Sports and the original Monday Night Football, as well as his (and Norman Gimbel's) Grammy winning hit song "Killing Me Softly With His Song". He has composed music for Love Boat, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Scarface, 9 to 5, and Barbarella. Introduced by Allyn Ferguson. Ars Memoriae Mexicana is the result of an Audio-Journey through Mexico in which these questions of location, memory and identity were very much in my daily thoughts as I traveled through a landscape saturated in sound, music and voices. In the recording you listen to the voices of :- the sound artist Charlie Fox as he claps rhythmically, facing the steps of an Aztec Pyramid; the film maker Mike Buckley sitting on a balmy evening surrounded by crickets; acoustic ecologist Hildegard Westercamp talking in the garden of the villa once owned by Octavia Paz; the artist Juan Gonzales de Leon recalling a childhood walk in the alien landscape of a Primrose Hill park in London; the journalist Miriam recounting her favourite Mexico City sounds. These voices float in a bed of ambient environmental sounds and street-scapes that for the most part I have chosen not to edit or sanitise, preferring to leave in the noise, the glitches and the occasional less than perfect recording ~ that’s the way the world sounds and Hollywood is a long way away both geographically but especially philosophically!
