Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 2nd October. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ADAM BREWTON NORWAY'S EVS BREAK THROUGH THE 90% BARRIER "Norway's plugin electric vehicle market share in September broke new ground, hitting 91.5% with full electrics alone taking 77.5% share. Diesels lost more than half their share year-on-year, falling to just 2.3%, with petrol and plugless hybrids not faring much better. Overall auto market volume was 17992 units, slightly above seasonal norms. The Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 took the top two spots." writes Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "September's combined plugin result of 91.5% consisted mainly of full battery electrics (BEVs) at a new record share of 77.5%, with plugin hybrids taking a modest 13.9%. Last year, September saw 61.5% BEVs and 20.1% PHEVs." 13,946 BEVs for September. The company launched its U.S. IPO last October in a high profile merger with blank-check company Diamond Peak Holdings. Lordstown's shares trade on the Nasdaq." reports Futurecar: "Lordstown Motors claimed that it had more than 100,000 preorders for the Endurance pickup worth a total of $1.4 billion, which wasn't true. With a falling stock price, the fallout led to the sudden resignation of Burns along with Chief Financial Officer Julio Rodriguez in June, leaving the company's future uncertain.  Lordstown is reportedly in talks to sell its Ohio EV factory that it acquired from General Motors to Taiwan contract manufacturer Foxconn. Foxconn's Chairman, Young Liu, confirmed to news outlet Nikkei Asia in August that the company plans to build an EV factory in the U.S. and another in Thailand." Lamborghini's first-ever dedicated EV will then arrive in the second half of the decade. Lamborghini has previewed its first EV in a shadowy teaser image on a slide showing its future product roadmap, but details are being kept under wraps." according to CarBuzz: "a new report by Automotive News suggests Lamborghini's first EV will take the form of an electric grand tourer with a practical 2+2 seating layout so the whole family can come along for the ride. Details are still scarce, but the electric grand tourer is reportedly being developed in collaboration with Audi and Porsche and be underpinned by Volkswagen Group's new Scalable Systems Platform entering production in 2024. According to the report, Lamborghini's first fully electric car will launch between 2025 and 2027. Lamborghini could utilize Rimac's battery technology since Porsche owns a 45 percent stake in the recently formed Bugatti Rimac." The California-based company has electrified everything from a Volkswagen Beetle to a Microbus, but is perhaps best known for its Tesla-powered Porsche 912. Jay Leno took one for a spin in the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, and to say he was impressed with the electric conversion is an understatement." say CarBuzz: "Fortunately, the electric motor and battery haven't ruined the original car's agile handling. Weighing just 2,505 pounds, the electric Porsche 912 is only 130 pounds heavier than the stock version. In fact, it's even more enjoyable to drive since it has better weight distribution and upgraded suspension. For the electric conversion, Zelectric has added a 32-kWh battery and an electric motor from a Tesla Model S rated at 536 hp. On a full charge, the Tesla-powered Porsche will last around 120-145 miles depending on how conservatively you drive." Plan is to roll out version 10.2 midnight Friday, then on-ramp ~1000 owners/day, prioritized by safety rating. Apologies, 10.2 release will be a week from Friday" "Tesla will hold off on rolling out a beta version of its so-called “Full Self-Driving” system to more customers by a week to align with a delayed software update, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said. The carmaker will expand access to what it refers to as “FSD beta” when it releases version 10.2 of the software, Musk wrote Friday on Twitter. He announced earlier in the week that this will take place on October 8." writes driving.ca: "A week ago, Tesla released a button to customers allowing them to request to participate in the beta-testing program. They must agree to let the company assess their driving behavior for seven days and acknowledge they're responsible for remaining alert and keeping their hands on the wheel." https://driving.ca/auto-news/technology-news/tesla-delaying-wider-release-of-fsd-beta-by-one-week-musk-says NEW ENERGY DENSITY RECORD FOR A LFP BATTERY "According to the some recent MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) documents, a pure electric dump truck from the XCMG Group now holds the record for having the most energy dense LFP (LiFePO4) battery." write PushEVs: "The XCMG Group is the leading Chinese construction machinery manufacturer and one of the world's largest. an energy density of 176,1 Wh/kg is impressive for a LFP battery pack. In the coming months we might see this kind of energy density also in LFP batteries for electric passenger cars." Most of the Model 3s and Ys in the Earth Rides fleet were purchased new. Ys are purchased with the optional third-row seat to accommodate larger ride parties." reports Motor Trend: "The fleet also includes Audi E-Tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Polestar 2 models, and other higher-end models will join the fleet (but probably no Nissan Leafs or Chevy Bolts). The local charging infrastructure affects purchases—Nashville is well served by Tesla Superchargers; Austin is less so. Hence there are more non-Teslas in the Texas fleet. In addition to driver training, new employees are schooled to be conversant in the technology of the cars they're driving, so they can answer all the frequently asked questions riders might have. And Earth Rides has worked out some sweetheart lease deals with Polestar to both expose the public to the nascent brand and to accumulate mileage more quickly than retail customers would and thereby provide fast-tracked used-vehicle stocK" Read more: https://www.motortrend.com/news/earth-rideshare-app-evs/ AUSTIN TEXAS ORDERS 26 PROTERRA E-BUSES Proterra has announced that Capital Metro in Austin, Texas is purchasing 26 40-foot Proterra ZX5 Max electric transit buses, with an option for another 126 of these buses plus chargers over the next 5 years. The first 26 electric buses should be delivered in 2022." says electrive: "In the announcement about the new electric bus purchase, it is said that Capital Metro aims to transition its entire fleet of more than 400 transit vehicles with zero-emission vehicles. According to its website, the Austin public transport provider currently has a fleet of 368 MetroBuses, which are presumably fossil-fuelled, since they list their 12 electric buses separately. Crucially, Arafura plans to process ores close to its site, ensuring direct oversight of the treatment of toxic waste products at the project it bought in 2001. China, which controls two-thirds of mining and 85% of refining of rare earths, according to BloombergNEF, is expected to put much of its production to use domestically in future." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/09/26/rare-earth-metal-alternatives/ WORLD RX ANNOUNCES 14-CAR GRID FOR FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC SEASON https://www.motorsport.com/world-rx/news/world-rallycross-14-electric-cars-2022/6678742/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you have gone back to fossil cars, or play along, imagine you HAD decided to switch back from EV to combustion, what's the reason?  Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. Show #790   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 26th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES ITS ELECTRIC EQV MINIVAN FOR ~$64,000 "Mercedes-Benz is launching its electric EQV minivan in Europe for €71,388.10 (incl. 19% VAT), which is the equivalent of a sticker price of about ~$64,000 USD." says Electrek: "The electric EQV MPV was first unveiled last year when we learned that it is equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack, but the company is limiting the usable capacity to 90 kWh. They believe it’s going to result in 405 km (250 miles) of range on a single charge. To charge the battery pack, the EQV is equipped with an 11 kW on-board charger and it can DC fast-charge at up to 110 kW, which Mercedes claims can charge the battery pack from 10 to 80% in less than 45 min. The electric van will be available as part of its V-Class lineup in Europe, but no availability has been confirmed for the North American market."   https://electrek.co/2020/05/26/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-minivan-price/   CarBuzz said: "Like the EQC SUV, the EQV features a similar sealed-off grille design. Riding on 18-inch wheels, it’s certainly one of the smarter vans around. Although still unconfirmed for the local market, the EQV will be offered elsewhere with two wheelbase lengths, the longer one stretching to 135 inches. It can seat up to eight passengers and accommodate 36.4 cubic feet of their luggage. Pretty nifty for a zero-emissions vehicle."   https://carbuzz.com/cars/mercedes-benz/eqv   And Green Car Reports says: "A new feature offers a particularly efficient and comfortable driving style: recuperation level DAUTO. According to the maxim “drive ahead and save energy” information from the security assistants, the navigation system and the camera get connected and adjust the strength of the recuperation situation—specifically and in real time. In addition, four driving programs help the customer to choose individually between the maximum of comfort and the maximum of range while driving."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/05/20200526-eqv.html   KIA IS CONSIDERING AN ULTRA-SMALL ELECTRIC CAR "Kia is examining plans to build a purely electric miniature car in the style of the Citroën Ami. Although the South Korean company has not revealed a timetable for these plans, it seems that Kia is already considering a new distribution model for the electric microcar." says Carrie from Electrive: "In a candid interview with AutoExpress Emilio Herrera, COO of Kia in Europe confirmed the company’s considerations. The mini electric car for urban areas – if it is realized – will be offered for rent globally via a subscription model. “The idea is to have a dedicated platform from Kia that we could possibly share with Hyundai,” Herrera said. The Kia manager did not name a timetable for a possible market launch of the small electric car. AutoExpress is expecting a corresponding production model in 2022. Citroën introduced the Ami at the end of February. The small two-seater in a strongly stylised design is to be available at prices starting at 6,000 euros or a monthly leasing rate of 19.99 euros (four years, 10,000 kilometres per year) in France. Pricing models for other European markets have not yet been revealed. Since Herrera spoke of a “dedicated platform” for the very small electric car, it does not seem likely to be the skateboard platform from Canoo. "   https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/26/kia-is-considering-an-ultra-small-electric-car/   RUMOR: IN APRIL TESLA RECEIVED ABOUT 15,000 ORDERS FOR MIC MODEL 3 LR "According to the Chinese media (via Moneyball), Tesla has received in April close to 15,000 orders for the new Long Range Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3. It's an unofficial number." reports InsideEVs: "t's great news that the demand for the upcoming LR (rear-wheel drive) is high because Tesla intends to produce in China some 4,000 Model 3 per week as early as in June. The last month was weaker than expected, as Model 3 registrations amounted to 4,312, up to 3-4 times less than anticipated production output (at 3,000 per week). It's explained that consumers were delaying orders of the Standard Range Model 3 to get a more attractive price (after changes in subsidies). Only time will tell whether sales in China will really stabilize at 4,000 per week (or 12,000 per month) for all versions (SR and LR)."   https://insideevs.com/news/425337/tesla-15000-orders-model-3-lr/   AUDI E-TRON IS THE NEW KING OF NORWAY "Norway remains one of the most fascinating auto markets in the world. With a 70% plug-in vehicle market share in the first 4 months of 2020, there is nothing that comes close to it. That isn’t an overnight figure either — the country has been far ahead of any other market in terms of plug-in vehicle market share for several years."That said, the market leader is now a vehicle that would typically be outside the price range of a working class family in other countries, but Norway is a rich country (very rich country) with adventurous terrain, so it makes a bit of sense. The Audi e-tron isn’t just first — it’s far ahead in the #1 spot so far this year." says CleanTechnica: "A German model that was in the #1 spot for many, many months, the Volkswagen e-Golf, is solidly in second at 6% market share. After that, you’ve got the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and then a long tail of remaining PEVs. You also have a handful of plug-less vehicles scattered into the overall sales rankings (see charts below)."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/audi-e-tron-is-the-new-king-of-norway/   MACRON DEMANDS CARMAKERS TURN TO ‘MADE IN FRANCE’ FOR €8BN VIRUS AID "French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled on Tuesday (26 May) an €8 billion aid package for the auto industry, which includes increased subsidies for electric car purchases" says Euractiv.com: "Negotiations with the likes of Citroën, Peugeot and Renault have been ongoing for weeks and the €8 billion support package does not come without strings, as Macron has made it clear they are expected to do more domestically. It was not immediately unclear if the support plan has specific conditions in terms of moving production back to France, although Renault will reportedly build electric motors at a plant in Normandy rather than in Asia, as previously planned, in order to access state aid. Renault will also lend its weight to the Battery Alliance, a pan-European industrial push to boost battery production and increase supply in check with growing demand for electric vehicles. Macron’s €8bn scheme is also aimed at consumers, who will be able to benefit from new and improved subsidy schemes worth around €1bn. For electric cars, the current premium of €6,000 for private citizens will increase to €7,000, while plug-in hybrids will be worth €2,000."   https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/news/macron-demands-carmakers-turn-to-made-in-france-for-e8bn-virus-aid/   RECORD €60BN INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIC CARS AND BATTERIES IN EUROPE SECURED LAST YEAR Europe secured €60 billion in investments to produce electric vehicles and batteries last year – 19 times more than in 2018, new analysis shows. Driven by EU car CO2 targets, industry and governments committed 3.5 times more into EV and battery production in Europe than they did in China, according to T&E’s report. Germany got the biggest chunk, €40 billion, coming mainly from the Volkswagen Group, and Tesla which announced a plant in Berlin. The Czech Republic received €6.6 billion, also thanks to VW, which plans to produce 75 all-electric models worldwide by 2029. Italy secured €1.75 billion in EV investments last year from Fiat, while France, Sweden and the UK each got around €1 billion from car manufacturers. Spain received close to €300 million from Opel, and Croatia got €80 million from Hyundai and Kia.   BYD BLADE PRISMATIC BATTERY CELL SPECS AND POSSIBILITIES "Simpler battery packs made with fewer and larger battery cells weren’t possible with compromised platforms like MQB, however in skateboard platforms like MEB – specially made for electric cars -, they are not only possible, they are what makes sense. Only in late 2016, high energy density battery cells started to be available in pouch format, like the LGX E63 made by LG Chem." says PushEVs: "In 2020, assembling big battery packs with tiny cells doesn’t make sense and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla announces a battery pack made with cobalt-free prismatic battery cells in “battery day”. This would be great, not only for Tesla, but also for electric bicycle manufacturers who would benefit from an immediate increase of cylindrical cells available on the market.  BYD Blade Battery is a module-less CTP (cell-to-pack) battery pack. Without modules, the long prismatic battery cells connected in series are put in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, making it as simple as possible. The simplicity of the CTP technology helps to achieve a good energy density at the battery pack level, even if the energy density of the cells isn’t amazing."   https://pushevs.com/2020/05/26/byd-blade-prismatic-battery-cell-specs-possibilities/   RENAULT CAPTUR PLUG-IN HYBRID SPEC REVEALED Renault UK has confirmed full specifications of new E-TECH version of the two all-new Renault Captur Plug-in Hybrid. The All-New Captur Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) benefits from a new petrol-electric powertrain, making it the most efficient and economical in the range as well as the most powerful. Become a Patron!   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 6th August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, there’s an interview from two days ago on Saturday from CleanCar who log your journeys and then using fancy pants data, tell you which is the optimal EV for you. Please go back and download it if that would be of interest. Thank you SO MUCH to the first 11 Patreon Producers of this show. I really had no idea if anyone help be a part of the show. I’ll tell you more and thank them at the end. If you get any value at all out of this show, whether you learn something or it entertains you, I’ll give you those details at the end. I love free stuff, you love free stuff, this show will always be free, it’s totally optional and not something I want you to think about. But let’s start with the news…   EV CHARGERS FOR BIRMIGNHAM Alabama’s busiest airport is adding a new convenience for travellers with electric cars: free vehicle chargers. Officials say nine new chargers are being added in the parking deck at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Three of the chargers are in the hourly section, and six are in an area used for long-term parking" according to YellowHammerNews: "The new units resulted from a partnership between the Birmingham Airport Authority and Alabama Power Co.  A statement says Birmingham becomes the first passenger airport in the state with chargers for electric vehicles. The airport has more than 120 daily departures on five airlines."   EV FAST CHARGER RIBBON CUTTING August 7 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. "America’s Car Museum are proud to kick-off this first new electric vehicle fast charger at a car museum along the I-5 corridor as part of the West Coast Electric Highway. With historic vehicles dating back to early electric powered cars, today America’s Car Museum is bringing in a new generation of electric vehicles as it unveils the newest fast-charging station at the city’s entrance."   https://pluginamerica.org/event/ev-fast-charger-ribbon-cutting/   TOP 5 EV'S COMING BY 2020 Fred at Electrek has been making a list, and we all love a good Top 5. This time it's the Top 5 cars coming by 2020: "Electric cars that will either be affordable and/or that will disrupt entire segments or even the industry as a whole." "5: VW I.D. Concept - For now, the vehicle is only known as the VW I.D. Concept, but it might end up being called ‘Neo’. VW is planning to release a production version in 2020 based on the concept that they revealed in 2016." "4: Mercedes-Benz EQC - By the time the EQC comes out next year, there will be 3 or 4 all-electric options in its segment, which doesn’t make it very unique, but I think it will result in electric vehicles taking over a lot (maybe even most) market shares of premium SUVs." "3: Volvo all-electric XC40 - Not much is known about the vehicle just yet, but Volvo’s latest CUV platform was built from the ground up to support several types of powertrains – including an all-electric on." "2: Porsche Taycan - I especially like the Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E, for its potential to convince hardcore petrolheads, like many Porsche fanatics, of the advantages of going electric." "1: Tesla Roadster - Tesla is bringing back the Roadster with a new generation of the vehicle that launched the company over 10 years ago. The first production car to get a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds, quarter-mile under9 seconds, and a top speed of over 250 mph."   https://electrek.co/2018/08/04/5-most-exciting-electric-cars-2-years/     NISSAN THINKS MILD HYBRIDS WILL SOON BE OBSOLETE "Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi all have experience building hybrids and electric vehicles, so the alliance is well-positioned to introduce new models. Renault-Nissan advanced product planning manager Warwick Daly expects 35% of Nissan’s European sales to be electrified by 2025 with the goal for 20% of sales coming from plug-in hybrids by 2020." according to CarBuzz.com: "We want to stay ahead of the curve,” said Daly, adding his opinion that “the mild hybrid will start to become obsolete. Our electrification offer will change over time." Clearly, plug-ins and EVs will play a more significant role moving forward for Nissan. “The Leaf will play a bigger role,” Daly said, pointing out that the new car is selling at a 40% higher volume than the previous model. As SUVs grow in popularity, it only makes sense to give the Leaf an SUV sibling.   https://carbuzz.com/news/nissan-thinks-mild-hybrids-will-soon-be-obsolete     CENTRICA PLUGS INTO ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING SECTOR TO FUEL RECOVERY "Britain's biggest energy provider is taking its smart electricity drive on the road with the company’s first major investment in electric vehicle charging." says Jillian Ambrose, www.telegraph.co.uk: "In the coming days, the FTSE 100 owner of British Gas, is expected to unveil a multimillion-pound investment in a software company that already helps to power more than 200,000 drivers in the US and Europe. Sources close to Centrica said the investment in Israeli start-up Driivz will accelerate its “smart” energy system ambitions, from the home into the burgeoning market for electric vehicles."   https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/08/04/centrica-plugs-electric-car-charging-sector-fuel-recovery/     TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSOLD ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CARS COMBINED "Model 3 not only outsold particular models (all passenger cars except for maybe seven), but for example, it outsold all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars – ≈8,500 (SUVs excluded). Mercedes-Benz sold in total just 20,034 vehicles in July (down 22.7%)."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-outsold-all-mercedes-benz-cars-combined/     TESLA, THE MODEL 3... AND THE MARKET Enrique Dans from Forbes.com says: "The Tesla 3 may not be a car for the masses, but there are major savings to be made: tax breaks, fuel, maintenance and resale, along with advantages such as free parking and access to lanes for high occupancy vehicles. In short, households that cover more than 20,000 kilometers per year should think seriously about buying a Tesla Model 3. But if you’re considering buying an electric vehicle, any electric vehicle, and you find that the sales person is trying to put you off doing so and convincing you to buy a petrol car instead, ask yourself: why might that be?  If Tesla succeeds in holding onto the top spot this month in the hypercompetitive luxury car middle segment then we could be witnessing a tipping point: an extremely traditional market deeply attached to fossil fuel vehicles that’s beginning to realize that electric is not only cool but also makes a lot of sense. "   https://www.forbes.com/sites/enriquedans/2018/08/04/tesla-the-model-3-and-the-market/#6f0cb4e77edf   MORE MODEL 3 VINS "Correction: This batch (78580-81204) is ~100% dual motor, not ~88% as previously estimated. It appears that 12% of the VINs were skipped (invalid response for dual motor AND single motor), however, they have since been updated by Tesla."   "#Tesla registered 7,903 new #Model3 VINs. ~100% estimated to be dual motor. Highest VIN is 89107. https://t.co/OZqpp8nPjs   — Model 3 VINs (@Model3VINs) August 5, 2018   JAGUAR I-PACE TARGETING MERCEDES TAXIS IN GERMANY "Jaguar's I-Pace electric car has Germany's famous Mercedes-Benz taxis in its sights" writes Dominik Wilde for Motor1.com: "The British firm's debut battery-powered effort has delivered 10 of the crossovers to Munich's biggest taxi operator recently. Mercedes-Benz has much of the German Taxi market covered, with around 60 percent of the country's taxis being Mercedes, many of which are E-Classes that are roughly half the price of the Jaguar. A comparable Mercedes, the EQ C crossover, won't be launched until next year." "Jaguar's taxis are part of a plan by the city of Munich – which is the hometown of rival brand BMW –to reduce area pollution. Rides in the new cars will be subsidized by the city council too, with it paying 20 cents per kilometre travelled. Munich has one of the highest levels of pollution from diesel vehicles among German cities and could introduce bans on older cars."   https://www.motor1.com/news/261217/jaguar-i-pace-targeting-mercedes-taxis/     HYUNDAI REALISING AN ELECTRIC DREAM "Early demand for this Kona Electric is the highest of any new Hyundai ever introduced. Already the Korean firm is worried it might not even be able to keep up with that demand." an article by Nat Barnes in the Express Newspaper said today: "Very few Kona sales are expected to be the lesser 39kWh model though, and the monthly price difference of the 64kWh model will be minimal on a finance plan. "There is a smart regeneration mode, strangely found deep within the trip computer settings which uses the road gradient and traffic levels to automatically choose and adapt a setting for you. This latter mode sounds ideal but the reality is that on the road its constant second-guessing quickly becomes frustrating. The manual settings are a far more preferable option."   Finally a massive thank you again to those early Patreon supporters. Monday 7th May 2018.  NORWAY IS NO LONGER THE BEST EUROPEAN MARKET FOR ELECTRIFIED CARS You may know that in March Norway reported that 56% of all new car sales were EV's, and then on yesterday’s show, that was down to below 50% but it's still very respectable. However one consequence is that Norway is no longer Europe's number one for EV sales. So who is? That honour goes to the home of diesel makers, Germany. CarBuzz reports: "EV sales increased 70 percent in the first quarter of this year, for a total of 17,574 vehicles sold. It’s important to note, however, this figure not only includes pure electric vehicles, but also plug-in hybrids as well. Two of the most popular EVs in Germany include the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, while the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, which isn’t sold in the US, is also a very common sight. Norway remains Tesla’s third-biggest market after the US and China"   NISSAN JOB FEARS AS CAR MAKER PUTS BRAKES ON DIESEL SALES IN EUROPE Whilst I always want this show to be about how you and I are interested in electrifying transport, and sometimes about the industry around the cars, EV's don't exist in a vacuum which means when they're on the rise, you have to ask about what's going down. And the answer is diesel. Whilst it was never big deal in the USA, many European countries quickly rose to 50% market share as governments saw it as a way to reduce CO2, whilst ignoring NOx. Some countries like France, Italy and Germany has far larger market shares. Now that's all changing. Now a report in the Telegraph says Nissan: "will not put diesel engines in future models of its car as it adapts to a sharp decline in diesel vehicle sales. Japan’s national public broadcaster NHK reported that Nissan would stop selling diesel in Europe as part of its aim to sell one million electric vehicles a year by 2022. A Nissan spokesman could not be reached for comment. Car industry figures have blamed the Government for “demonising” diesel, which has resulted in sales of the cars in the UK nosediving. While UK new car sales rebounded in April after a year-long slump, diesel sales continued to plunge, suffering a 25pc year-on-year drop. Diesel’s market share of sales last month fell to 31pc from 45pc a year ago."   AUDI’S ‘BETA’ WEBSITE REVEALS MORE One of the behind the Fully Charged YouTube channel, who goes by @FullyChargedDan on Twitter, found the Beta site for the new Audi e-tron Quattro was live. And he spotted: Arrives early 2019, • 370 kW / 310 mile range from 95kWh battery, • Integrated solar cells in roof that generate electricity for the air conditioning and heated seats, • 80% charge in 30 minutes, “THRILLING EXPERIENCE IF YOU’RE ONLY USED TO COMBUSTION POWER.”   THE PORSCHE CAYENNE E-HYBRID IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GAS MODELS The Verge has a very interesting article you should read about the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid pointing out how important it is the future of the brand; "In addition to all of the weight savings introduced on the third-generation car, the Cayenne E-Hybrid will also boast the newly introduced technology, such as a trio of digital displays in the dashboard for driving information, navigation, and a new off-road app. Energy and efficiency displays are also included as part of the E-Hybrid package. Starting from $79,990, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid may not sound like an important car for the masses. There are other, less expensive plug-in hybrid SUVs already on the market. But for Porsche’s reputation as an electric vehicle manufacturer, it’s the way most of its customers will experience technology in the near future."   WHY PLUG-IN HYBRIDS ARE BETTER THAN ALL-ELECTRIC CARS Finally, Douglas May at Torque News really nails the use case for a PHEV: "for those of us who actually own electric cars, we quickly realize that long electric ranges are not necessary because your home is the "gas station" where you plug it in each night to charge the battery. In fact, all you really need is a battery just big enough to cover your daily commute and no more! For most people, that means an electric range of 20-50 miles will do just fine. The best way to describe a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is "Electricity for your daily commute and gasoline for your long weekend getaways". “This combination makes sense for two reasons. 1) Lithium-Ion batteries are very heavy. A Tesla battery weighs 1,200 lbs in which you are only using 10-15% of it on a daily commute basis. That means you are lugging around 1,000 lbs of unused batteries which is the equivalent of hauling three full size refrigerators in your everyday commute! 2) And when you are making those infrequent weekend getaways, filling up at a gas station is still far more convenient than waiting 1-4 hours at a charging station assuming it's even available. When those Tesla Model 3s become popular, line-ups at freeway charging stations will invariably become common. With a PHEV, you can switch back to gasoline mode for those infrequent weekend getaways and don't have to worry about long lineups or non-existent charging stations. Tuesday 3rd April 2018.  ELON’S LATE, LATE APRIL FOOLS And so the tradition goes, you must play your April Fools joke before Midday. Well they’re the rules and, if we can learn one thing from Elon Musk, he doesn’t play by the rules. Well at least not anyone else’s apart from his own. And thus late on the 1st April he sent out his jokes about Tesla. If you missed it, he said: “Despite intense efforts to raise money, including a last-ditch mass sale of Easter Eggs, we are sad to report that Tesla has gone completely and totally bankrupt. So bankrupt, you can't believe it.” He later followed up by tweeting an image of himself “passed out against a Tesla Model 3”, apparently using Tesla packaging as a blanket. He later tweeted: There are many chapters of bankruptcy and, as critics so rightly pointed out, Tesla has them *all*, including Chapter 14 and a half (the worst one).” After a shocker of a week, some would argue the worst in years if you look at the stock price fall, he’s got a sense of humour that few other CEO’s would have. And that’s probably why Tesla has so many fanboys and fangirls.   IS 2,000/WEEK A SUCCESS OR FAIL FOR MODEL 3? And not only if he CEO, but it appears he’s the new Head of Model 3 Production. According to Amir Efrati on Twitter, who in his biog says formerly of the WSJ and has a Twitter blue mark, claims Elon musk has taken direct control of the Model 3 production line. The article claims: “ Musk appears to have pushed aside the company’s senior vice president of engineering, Doug Field, who had been overseeing manufacturing in recent months. Until the move by Mr. Musk, Mr. Field had been consolidating power since joining Tesla from Apple in 2013. Mr. Musk had given Mr. Field several chances to raise output, but the company has repeatedly missed its Model 3 production targets over the past year, including after Mr. Field took over manufacturing.” At 12:01am Eastern yesterday, he sent an email Tesla staff about the Model 3, ahead of the earning call, saying the ramp up to this level has been “extremely difficult,”but Musk noted “we are finally here. It took five years to reach the 2000/week production rate for S and X combined, but only nine months to achieve that output with Model 3,” he wrote. And by finally here he means if they just hit the production rate of 2,000 Model 3s a week. It was back in January that we heard they were pushing back the 5,000 a week target by one quarter, and by now they should have been making 2,500 a week. And that’s the curious thing about the targets, which everyone has an opinion on, so where do you stand? Should Tesla and Elon just have said we play to make 1.5k a week in Q1. That way they would have smashed the target. OR is it better to shoot really high, narrowly miss it, but actually end up doing better than an average target because you’ve stretched everyone? Let me know what you think in the comments or on Twitter. Bloomberg recently predicted 1,200 which would be a massively embarrassing fail for an organisation which has recently pitched themselves as the de facto ‘Tesla Tracker’.   MODEL X CRASH SPILLS ONTO TWITTER Finally on Tesla for now, an article on Tesla Motors Club said that the investigators working on the Model X crash in California were unhappy with Tesla. The NTSB didn’t appreciate Tesla revealing the black box data such as the fact the driver had been reminded to put his hands back on the wheel and that Autopilot was engaged at the time. Elon Musk responded to the NTSB via twitter pointing out that the NHTSA regulates cars, not the NTSB. He added Tesla releases critical crash data affecting public safety immediately and always will. "To do otherwise would be unsafe," said Musk.   ON THE (ELECTRIC) BUSES On the podcast I’ve mentioned the difference between electric vehicles and electric miles, and why it’s important to electrify the vehicles which travel the farthest. Some estimates say your personal car is in use for 4% of the time you own it. Well ChargedEVs have another great story about electric buses, saying: “London’s world-famous red buses are steadily going electric. Route 153 serves many of the City of London’s most congested streets, between Finsbury Park in the north and Moorgate in the heart of the financial district. This route will be the fourth in the capital to go fully electric, with a new fleet consisting of eleven 10.8-meter single-deck Enviro200EV electric buses, jointly manufactured by China-based BYD and Scotland-based Alexander Dennis. The depot will be served by charging points manufactured by BYD. Buses provided by the BYD/Alexander Dennis partnership have already accumulated over a million miles of emissions-free operation in London, Liverpool and Nottingham.   END OF THE LINE FOR i3 AND i8 Onto the BMW i3 and i8 next, and between Carbuzz and Automotive news report that: “Automotive Newsreports that with the BMW i4 and iNext EVs set to debut in 2020 and 2021, the i3 and i8 will likely no longer be needed. Or, in other words, neither will be redesigned. “These cars are very unique”, said Stefan Juraschek, head of electric powertrain for BMW. “These two cars were not (developed) as a family that we can expand in different (ways) or maybe five or 10 derivatives.” Instead, they were (and still are) technological showcases. For 2017, the i3 received a series of updates and it’s now a full EV while the refreshed i8 coupe and new roadster remains a plug-in hybrid only.” I also tried to chase up any news about a larger BMW i3 battery but the most recent thing I could find was 2 months old. The latest is that sometime in 2018 BMW will squeeze a 40kWh battery into the i3, effectively doubling the capacity of the launch car in 2013.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 21st March 2018.   NEWS IN BRIEF First up some headlines. The Tesla Semi prototypes are continuing their real-world tour of the United States. The silver one has just been spotted at the Dallas, TX service centre. Where will it turn up next? The New York Times says: Prosecutors in Munich searched BMW’s headquarters on Tuesday as part of their continuing investigation into an emissions-cheating scandal. Munich prosecutors said in a statementthat they were investigating whether the software in some BMW diesel models functioned like so-called defeat devices”. BMW said in a statement: “In the course of internal testing, the BMW Group realized that a correctly developed software module had been allocated in error to models for which it was not suited,” Nissan LEAF sales are closing in on 10,000 per month and 100,000 yearly if you were to do a crude multiplication by 12. February numbers are looking strong with almost 4,000 in Japan and Europe each, coming in at 6.5% of all Nissans sold in Europe. Add in almost 1,000 more in the US that’s heading towards 10,000 in February alone. If Tesla can’t sort their issues, it could be the Model 3 in 2018, which would have been unthinkable last year. I’m still banking on Tesla getting to 5,000 cars a week from July so that would push Model 3 way in front. Playing devils advocate, you could say Nissan has three factories, Japan UK and US, with established supply chains and experience, so 3,000 per factory in a month doesn’t blow your socks off. In the UK the Plug In Car Grant of £4,500 off the price of a new BEV STILL officially ends in 10 days time, with the government saying something will continue from April onwards. This is just embarrassing now. Next week will see a panel discussion on whether California should ban all combustion cars from 2040. It’s being chaired by the GreenBiz and Verge writer Katie Fehrenbacher, and she’s asking for your opinion if you’re a Californian podcast listener – send your thoughts to katie@greenbiz.com Hyundai IONIQ pure Bev sales were down in February, with 1,531 sold worldwide. It’s hard to work out why, demand is pretty high for it judging by anecdotal evidence. They could be building slowly, or deliberately holding back because there’s a long range IONIQ BEV coming before the end of 2018. Or maybe there’s no conspiracy theory, and Hyundai are just busy, because the Kona deliveries are dues to start in their domestic market of South Korea in April. Pedro from Push EV’s published an article saying the current 40Kwh LEAF was a stop gap, which I thought was harsh, but he has good reasoning. Old cell chemistry, no thermal management, AESC now being an external battery supplier since Nissan sold it, all pointing towards a very conservative BMS which throttles rapid charging to be on the safe side. And today in my timeline I’ve seen two examples of new LEAF owners charging very slowly on rapids, when it’s only 2 or 3 degrees Celsius here right now. Rapid charging isn’t essential, look at the Zoe and how well it sells, but it’s something I’ll watch. And finally for news in brief, the Model 3 Owners Club tweeted a new option that has appeared in the Model 3 configurator. The 20” sport wheel and Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber is available for $4000 extra.   WILL YOU GO EV FOR EARTH HOUR? The WWF say: “climate change is the biggest future threat to people and nature around the world, especially in the polar regions. If we don’t up our action on climate change, we could lose almost 50% of species from the world’s most precious places by the end of this century.” That’s why they’re asking you to mark Earth Hour with a pledge to make your next car an EV. And if you own an electric car, why don’t you let a friend use it for a journey they would otherwise take in an ICE car during the earth hour? Get then insured for the day, and give them a taste of the power, silence and efficiency of an EV.   ELECTRIC CARS THE NEXT BIG THING According to Bo Bai, CEO of the private equity U.S.-China Green Fund, electric vehicles is the next big investment: "Solar technology has been there for a long time. China has gotten wholeheartedly into it. Reduced the cost to a ridiculous level right now to break even on many areas, many regions. Electric vehicles, it's similar. The technology has advanced to a certain stage with mass production and logistics management. The cost is reducing very substantially," He predicts a ripple effect that’s coming very soon, as price levels come down to a level that’s low enough.   WHEN DID THE EV REVOLUTION START? Last week Tesla celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the start of Roadster production. But when do you think the beginning of the modern era of electric cars was? According to CarBuzz, the Geneva Motor Show this month was the real start to the mainstream era of EVs. 12 new electric cars were showcased, not concepts or pretty sketches. These are production-ready cars from car companies a lot bigger that Tesla. Well, bigger in terms of how many cars they make, even if not the share price! The best news about the I-PACE is that production has started and models will soon be shipped around the world. The Audi e-tron is months away from production – or whatever I’m meant to call it. The most recent name seems to be the e-tron Quattro SUV, which highlights not only size and propulsion, but also because Audi are using e-tron for their next electric cars. So I must stop calling it just the Audi e-tron. Honda confirmed the Urban EV won’t be a million miles from the concept and the suicide doors will stay. My favourite, the Hyundai Kona, was showed off with it’s 64.5 kWh battery, LG Chem cells with thermal management so rapid charging should be OK, and we heard that from July the first 2,500 will be heading to Norway first. I would disagree that the VW VIZZION is coming soon, it’s didn’t have an interior and was basically four lovely seats from the IKEA catalogue and some very thick shagpile carpet. VW say it’s the future of motoring, I say the carpet looked nicer than the one in my bedroom.   TOSHIBA NEXT GEN BATTERY Toshiba recently unveiled a li-ion battery which they claim charges fully in just six minutes, delivering a 200-mile range on a full charge. Toshiba's next generation SCiB lithium ion battery replaces the conventional lithium titanium oxide anode with a titanium niobium oxide anode. The new battery maintains the longevity of the previous older configuration, promising a life cycle of 14 years, assuming a full charge and discharge cycle per day.    I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Episode 20 of Crank Journal may sound pretty normal to you, the ever patient and tolerant listener, but to us recording, it was quite unusual, as Michael packed up his podcast gear and joined Jared Rosenholtz in person at a college study room rather than remotely to make this episode. Jared writes for CarBuzz, and both he and Michael talk about the perks and pitfalls of driving press cars, about being alumni members of the UCF Car Club, and driving R34 Skylines and making YouTube videos about them. Oh, and Jared's impersonation of William Fichtner on Top Gear America is worth the 2-hour wait.
