Shoot us a Text.Episode #1015: Today we're diving into how global tensions are reshaping Tesla's China strategy, why car buyers rushed showrooms ahead of auto tariffs, and why Harvard says better mentoring might be the secret to fixing retail's revolving door of turnover.Show Notes with links:Tesla has stopped taking orders for its U.S.-made Model S sedans and Model X crossovers in China as trade tensions between the U.S. and China flare up once again.China will increase tariffs on U.S. goods to 125% on April 12, including autos.Tesla's Model S and X are built in Fremont, California, making them directly affected. The option to order these models disappeared from Tesla's China site in early April.Tesla's Shanghai factory, which makes the Model 3 and Y, isn't affected by the new tariffs.Model S and X made up fewer than 2,000 of Tesla's 661,000+ Chinese sales last year.A spike in new car sales last month wasn't just spring fever. According to Cloud Theory, auto shoppers raced to dealerships in March to beat looming tariffs.March saw 1.31 million new vehicles sold — a 38% jump from February.Cloud Theory attributes 153,000 of those sales to fear of impending price hikes from tariffs.Average marketed prices rose $1,123 from late February through March with SUVs, full-size pickups, and heavy duty trucks seeing the most increase — thanks to V8 engines sourced from Canada.Discounts and incentives dropped by $432 in March as OEMs braced for higher costs.“While this led to very strong results in the short term… the longer-term effects will likely be highly detrimental,” said Cloud Theory's Rick Wainschel.A new Harvard study says the key to lowering retail's notoriously high turnover may be simpler than we think: invest in frontline workers' career growth and mentorship.Researchers found that most low-wage workers actually want to keep their jobs to avoid disruption in their lives — especially once they're comfortable with their coworkers.Over 60% said they'd stay with their employer if they saw a real path to advance, but with many supervisors overseeing up to 20 employees, personalized feedback and coaching are rare.Employees often fear asking for promotions or raises, worried it might cost them their jobs.A related McKinsey study also showed career development was the top reason non-managers wanted to leave. Their advice? Empower managers — because their impact cascades throughout the whole organization.Join hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Shoot us a Text.Today, we're talking about how used car prices are on the rise—unless you're driving a Tesla, where values are plummeting at three times the market rate. Plus, two NASA astronauts return home after an unexpected nine-month stay in space.Show Notes with links:The used-car market is heating up, with February retail sales jumping 16% month-over-month, the largest increase in years. While tax refunds are playing a role, tightening inventory—especially for budget-friendly cars—is making affordability an ongoing challenge.Used-vehicle supply dropped to 2.18 million units in early March, down from 2.23 million in February.Cars priced under $15,000 have only a 30-day supply—well below the 42-day industry average. The average listing price for a used car in March was $25,006, slightly down from last year.Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan account for over half of used-car sales, with the top 5 best-selling models listing at an average price of $23,531.February CPO sales hit 203,663 units, up from January but still 3.4% lower year-over-year.Used Tesla prices are dropping at three times the rate of the overall used car market, raising concerns about demand for both new and used models. While the market as a whole is cooling, Tesla's brand challenges seem to be accelerating depreciation.Tesla's used car prices dropped 3.7% in the last three months, compared to just 1.12% for the broader market and over the past year, Tesla's used prices fell 7.26%, nearly triple the market average of 2.68%.Over the last 90 days, the Model 3 is down 4.2%, the Model Y is down 2.9% and Cybertruck is down 11.5% and a staggering 58% YoYOnly the Model X saw an increase, up 1.29% in the past 30 days. After 9 months longer than expected, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are finally on their way home from the International Space Station. SpaceX launched Crew-10 on Friday, docked on Sunday, and undocked and began its journey home early this morning.Originally set for an 8-day mission, their Boeing Starliner test flight faced thruster failures and delays, forcing them to stay aboard the ISS until a new crew could arrive. After technical issues, scheduling setbacks, and political drama, Wilmore and Williams are set to return to Earth tomorrow evening.Despite the delays, the astronauts enjoyed their extra stay in space with Williams reflecting “This is my happy place. I love being up here in space. It's just fun, you know?”Wilmore echoed those comments: “It's been fun. It's been trying at times, no doubt. But stranded? No. Stuck? No. Abandoned? Shoot us a Text.We are rounding down a week of east coast travel here on the last day of the NAMAD Annual Membership Meeting. Today we are looking at Ford's recently announced change in their EV plans and how EVs may not be slowing down as much as some sources may say.Show Notes with links:Ford is adjusting its electrification plans, canceling its long-planned three-row electric crossovers and delaying the next-generation full-size electric pickup by 18 months. The automaker will now focus on a family of hybrid three-row crossovers.Ford's changes could result in up to $1.9 billion in costs, including a $400 million noncash charge related to the cancellation of the crossover.CFO John Lawler: "We looked where the segment was evolving, the amount of competition, the customer needs, and then, the size of the battery that needs to go in a pure EV, the cost structure, the pricing, We could not put together a vehicle that met our requirements to be profitable in the first 12 months of launch."The next-gen full-size electric pickup's launch has been pushed to late 2027.Moving forward, Lawler said EVs would represent roughly 30 percent of Ford's capital expenditure, down from a planned 40 percent.Despite talks of an EV slowdown, the U.S. market saw record-breaking sales in Q2 2024, with 18 electric models surpassing 5,000 units sold. Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai lead, but newcomers are gaining ground.EV sales hit a record 320,463 units in Q2, up 11% from last year and 23% from Q1.The 18 models that sold 5K units: Tesla Model Y, Model 3, Model X and Cybertruck; Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning; Hyundai IONIQ 5; Toyota bZ4X; Rivian R1S; Cadillac Lyriq; BMW i4; Kia EV6, EV9, and Niro; Chevrolet Blazer EV; Volkswagen ID.4; Mercedes EQE; and Nissan Ariya. As we previously reported, Tesla's market share dipped below 50% for the first time, now at 49.7%, and Hyundai Motor Group (including Kia and Genesis) claimed 10% of the U.S. EV market, outperforming Ford (7.4%) and GM (6.3%)Stephanie Valdez Streaty, Cox Automotive Industry Insights Director said: “Automakers that deliver the right product at the right price and offer an excellent consumer experience will lead the way in EV adoption.”Chick-Fil-A is stepping into the entertainment arena with plans to launch its own streaming service, focusing on family-friendly content. Today, we're flashing back to the very first automotive ad, then bringing it back to the present state of Carvana's continued rise, an awkward recall involving Tesla hoods and Mazda's new logo.Show Notes with linksOn July 30th in 1898, the weekly journal Scientific American introduced the world's first car ad, courtesy of Cleveland's Winton Motor Carriage Company. The ad boldly proclaimed, “Dispense with a horse and save the expense, care, and anxiety of keeping it. To run a motor carriage costs about ½ cent a mile.”This pitch marked a shift from horse-drawn carriages to the dawn of automotive travel. Alexander Winton's brainchild promised a future of motoring convenience and ignited public curiosity, leading to a surge in orders and ultimately reshaping transportation history.Online used-vehicle retailer Carvana is expected to report a significant year-over-year increase in sales for the second quarter, with results anticipated post-market close on July 31.Carvana sold 91,878 used vehicles in Q1 2024, up 16% year-over-year.Analysts predict Q2 sales will surpass last year's 76,530 vehicles, with a potential 3% quarter-over-quarter growth, with William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia adjusting her Q2 sales estimate to 98,900 vehicles.Increased inventory (+15%) and site traffic (+16%) are positive indicators.BTIG analyst Marvin Fong praises Carvana's business model, setting a share price target at $155.“While there's no way around the fact Carvana trades at a premium to most e-commerce and auto-related stocks, we believe [Carvana's] vertically integrated and in-sourced business model is simply a better mousetrap in an enormous automotive retail market that shouldn't be overlooked,” Fong noted.Tesla is recalling approximately 1,849,638 vehicles due to a software glitch affecting the hood latch assembly, impacting the 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y.NHTSA warns the software may fail to detect an unlatched hood, potentially causing it to open and obstruct the driver's view, increasing crash risk.Tesla has issued a free OTA software update to fix the issue without requiring physical visits to service centers.Mazda appears to be the latest brand to flatten its logo, removing its previous texture and identity, as indicated by a recent trademark filing in Japan, which shows a new, streamlined design. The new logo retains the familiar shape and downward "M" within a circular emblem, used since 1997.The simplified logo was previously seen on the Arata SUV concept at Auto China 2024, and its uncertain if the new logo will appear on future Mazda models in the US.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

It turns out people really do win giveaways. In February, Tim Harrington took delivery of the first Cybertruck to be raffled off by Tesla. He later showed how the Cybertruck fits in his garage "like a glove." 2024 continues to be the year of the Cybertruck, and well, Tesla has done it again. After holding a second Tesla referral raffle, the company has delivered a second free Cybertruck to one extremely fortunate winner: Jacob Knight. An unbelievable, timely message A few weeks ago, my neighbor and best friend since grade school called me around 9 p.m. with some unbelievable news. He told me he thought he might have won a free Cybertruck. I literally didn't believe him. Well, I believed that he thought he might have won a free Cybertruck, but I really wanted to debunk whatever phishing expedition was being conducted before it got too far. Neither we nor ChatGPT could debunk the raffle winner email using the email headers and raw message. A call from Tesla the following day confirmed the message and set things in motion. Prior to the call, our families had spent the previous day and a half together. The startup Jacob worked for was downsizing, his father-in-law Brian spent several days hospitalized after a stroke, and the start of summer was just generally turbulent. My best friend was understandably in a funk, and I wanted to do my part in helping, so we dragged him out to the beach. The next day, I helped him clean his office while he interviewed for new job opportunities. It felt like a day and a half well spent! Neither of us had any clue about what was processing in the background.Sure, Tesla absolutely stole my thunder that day. Still, it was a very real lesson in how a tide change may already be developing when you feel like you're underwater. Also, enter more raffles! Tesla Cybertruck raffle winner Fast-forward one week and change later, and our families are on a six-hour round trip from Biloxi to the Tesla delivery facility in Brandon, Mississippi. The email was real. The call was real. And Jacob's Cybertruck was waiting in the Tesla parking lot with his name hanging from the mirror. Prior to owning the Cybertruck, Jacob's family owned two Teslas: a Model 3 Performance and a Model X Plaid. I drove Jacob's Model 3 Performance up for the photo op; I bought it a week later! Brian, having recovered from his stroke, rode as a passenger in the Model X on the way up. He was responsible for driving the Model X on the way back. This happened to be his first experience ever behind the wheel of an EV. Jacob bravely packed his newly received Tesla Cybertruck with one of his two kids and my two kids for the ride back. It was a hot-as-summer spring day in Mississippi, but it was a helluva day to remember. Jacob's Mawmaw Katie was also part of the day one experience. What a memory! Personally, I can say I've logged roughly two hours behind the wheel of the Cybertruck. It's GOOD. Meanwhile, Jacob and his Foundation Edition Cyberbeast (yes, tri-motor!) have been the talk of the town. Seriously, people haven't stopped posing for pictures and sharing sightings on our town's Facebook group. Jacob has also allowed his Cybertruck to join the dark side with a deep black matte wrap. But enough storytelling from me. You can hear Jacob's story of being the Tesla Cybertruck raffle winner in his own words in a podcast interview recorded this week below: https://twitter.com/jacobisknight/status/1799145466879267098?s=61&t=Um0m_kl9v8_MM9QONXv-QA The mission continues.
