Rock royalty took over Sydney! In this episode of Triple M Gig Reviews, Row recaps an electrifying night at ICC Sydney Theatre as ZZ Top brought their Texas blues swagger Down Under on May 13, 2025. With George Thorogood & The Destroyers in tow as the perfect warm-up act, the night was a masterclass in grit, groove, and guitar. From Thorogood’s rowdy renditions of Who Do You Love and Bad to the Bone, to Billy Gibbons and Elwood Francis lighting up the stage with Got Me Under Pressure, Gimme All Your Lovin’, and Sharp Dressed Man, it was wall-to-wall classics. Elwood Francis stepped up to honour Dusty Hill’s legacy on bass with serious style and serious beard, while John Douglas filled in on drums for Frank Beard with rock-solid precision. The night wrapped with an explosive performance of La Grange, leaving the crowd howling for more. It’s been over 50 years, but ZZ Top still proves they’ve got that old-school swagger — no gimmicks, no fluff, just vintage Texas rock at its finest. If you missed it, this gig review is your backstage pass to one of the coolest shows of the year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Andrew Fink. Andrew lives with his wife Lauren and their five children in Hillsdale County, Mich., and is an attorney, Marine veteran, current state representative, and candidate for Michigan Supreme Court. He's on X at @AndrewFinkMI, and his website can be found here.Andrew's Music Pick: ZZ TopNo matter how far into the future this show might run, when you stack Political Beats episodes alphabetically, this is the one that always will show up at the bottom. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to turn the spotlight on "That Little Ol' Band from Texas," ZZ Top. Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard. Blues, guitars, and boogie. And, of course, later on, synths, drum machines, and sequencers.Maybe you're like Jeff and your mental picture of ZZ Top is frozen in time around 1983, when Eliminator was soaring near the top of the charts. We're here to tell you you're missing an awful lot from the band. The entire decade of the 1970s featured album after album of incredible music. There's seriously never a misstep. Early on, you can hear the influence of and influence on other bands like The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. ZZ Top figures out early exactly who they are as a band and refine, refine, refine until perfecting it (we think) on 1979's Degüello. Billy Gibbons, the group's main songwriter, singer, and guitar player, has a style all his own, a unique approach that cuts through each song, even when he's incorporating the sound of another player. At the turn of the decade of the 1980s, the band makes what we consider to be a fairly natural evolution. The tones, beats, and rhythms on Eliminator might seem out of place in a vacuum, but not if you follow the contours of the band's career. Post-worldwide fame and success is a different story, and one we also tell during the course of this episode. By the way, this is the longest one-part show in Political Beats history, surpassing the U2 show, which actually makes some sense. The feeling here was we wouldn't go quite so long -- otherwise we would have split the thing in half! But once we got going, there was too much fun being had and too many good arguments being made to stop. All for the benefit of you, the listener. They're bad, they're nationwide. And now's the time to discover the full story of ZZ Top on Political Beats.

"In 2016 it was the biggest rock and roll story in some time," noted MMHP and Michigan Rock Legend Hall Of Fame CEO Gary 'Dr. J' Johnson, on the Fake Zombies story ran in Rolling Stone Magazine ripped straight out of M15 in Bay City and the historic chronicles of the late '60s.     Digging for gold, Podcaster/Bartender Daniel Ralston--in Los Angeles--uncovered The True Story Of The Fake Zombies, to be aired on the iHeart network in an eight-part podcast series beginning July 11, 2024, through the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This will run on all your favorite podcast outlets. You will learn of Bill Kehoe at Delta Promotions in Bay City, two fake-Zombie touring bands (one which included members of ZZ Top--drummer Frank Beard and late-bassist Dusty Hill), hear about the fleeting fake-Archies band, the members, the ideas, the major and minor showcases, the tours, the money, and ultimately, how it effected the real Zombies and led them to their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland--as well as subsequent reunion tours and albums. Ralston took over ten years to get the proper interviews, the rights, the footage, photos, chronicles, band members, folk lore and truth to set the record straight and dust the dirt off of one of the most bizarre rock and roll stories to ever happen over the past 60 years. Rolling Stone, Howard Stern Show, YouTube, Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame--numerous outlets--all have some backstory since 2016 if you do your own research. Ralston came to meet and interview Dr. J in Bay City, get a tour of the town, and in turn offered his story to the MMHP in the 989 last June, 2023.  We were told to leave this episode in the can....until now. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got an unlikely pairing of two performers who share a home state, but it would seem at first glance not too much else—though that's just first glance: Britt Daniel of Spoon and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Now the genesis of this conversation was actually a comment that Britt Daniel made around the time the band announced its new album, Lucifer on the Sofa. About the song “The Hardest Cut,” he simply said that he'd been listening to a lot of ZZ Top in the years leading up to the album's recording. And while the song is certainly no tribute to ZZ Top, you can hear the snarl and bite coming through in its tones and lyrics as well as on a few other place on this collection. It's album number 10 for Spoon, who have had an incredibly strong run over the past almost three decades. Lucifer on the Sofa is out this week, and it stands among their best—catchy, considered, and a bit more raw than recent records. Maybe that's because they recorded it back in Britt's home state, which of course is where the legendary ZZ Top was born as well. Billy Gibbons formed the band with Dusty Hill and Frank Beard way back in 1969, and the original trio rocked consistently for five decades until Hill's death in 2021. The blues-inspired rock band gained traction in the ‘70s with songs like “La Grange” and “Tush,” then took off in the ‘80s as they became superstars of the early MTV era with “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs.” They were shoo-ins for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, of course, and not even Hill's death could stop them: His guitar tech and friend Elwood Francis stepped in, and ZZ Top will play shows with Cheap Trick this April—all the dates, naturally, are at ZZTop.com. Daniel and Gibbons talk a lot about what they have in common, which is the state of Texas and specifically its myriad Mexican restaurants. Daniel asks about the legendary photo inside ZZ Top's classic 1973 album Tres Hombres, and Gibbons gets a chance to talk about some of his contemporaries and friends, including Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators and Bo Diddley, with whom he collaborated on a guitar design, among other things. Enjoy.   If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platforms and social media channels. There are many layers of public health interventions that can reduce the rate of transmission of the novel coronavirus. Social distancing, mask wearing, lockdowns and vaccines each nudge the reproduction number down. But you need all of them working together to make a significant impact, and that means you need the community on board. In this podcast we discuss the challenges and strategies around communicating public health messages to the public during a time of such high anxiety. Jessica Kaufman is a research fellow in the Vaccine Acceptance, Uptake and Policy Research Team at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute who presented her work to the RACP Congress in May. She outlined the principles and clarity, transparency and consistency that are needed to win the public's trust when tough social restrictions need to be adhered to.    We also hear an interview with Professor Allen Cheng FRACP, who's played this game harder than most. As Deputy Chief Health Officer of Victoria, he advised on implementation of the lockdown that brought Melbourne's second wave to a halt after four long months. If being part of fun police wasn't enough responsibility, he also co-chaired the COVID-19 Group at the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation which had to weigh up the suitability of the Astrazeneca vaccine as reports of rare side-effects and death were emerging in real time. He describes the fine balance between providing enough information for the public to be able to make informed decisions.Guests Dr Jessica Kaufman (Murdoch Children's Research Institute) Professor Allen Cheng FRACP (Alfred Health; Monash University; ATAGI; TGA)ProductionWritten and produced by Mic Cavazzini DPhil. Models of viral spread and interventions to mitigate these have become everyday discussion points, but few people understand how hard these are to put together. In this podcast we share expert talks that were presented at the RACP Congress in April and May. On March 23rd, 1983 ZZ Top released their eighth studio album "Eliminator". It remains the band’s most commercially successful album thanks to several singles with an undeniable beat and hook along with three videos that are among the most popular in MTV history. While MTV would launch the careers of new artists, it would revive the careers of veteran bands like ZZ Top. And while MTV helped ZZ Top, the trio of guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard would return the favor. They were exactly what the network was looking for. They had "a look". The long beards, the sunglasses, the tricked out Eliminator 1933 Ford Coupe, the spinning guitars. They weren’t just a rock band…they were as Classic Rock Magazine’s Paul Rees wrote - otherworldly beings. But as cool as those videos were, they wouldn’t have been much without songs that were just as good…and they were. Inspired by the new wave music heard while on a European tour in the early '80s, ZZ Top infused synthesizers and danceable beats into their already recognizable boogie blues sound. The results speak for themselves. Selling over 10 million copies since its release, "Eliminator" is among the first albums to be certified diamond. A full year after its release it was still selling 100 thousand copies a week. In this episode we’ll get to the story of what led to the creation of the '80s ZZ Top sound, hear early demos of the tracks, the stories behind all 11 tracks, the videos, the album cover and more. 374 - Chaz McDonald - ZZ Top That Little Ol' Band from Texas Everyone's been talking about the new ZZ Top documentary from Eagle Rock Entertainment entitled "ZZ TOP: THAT LITTLE OL' BAND FROM TEXAS" coming out everywhere on February 28, 2020. It's one of those films that grabs you to the point that you sit down to watch a few minutes and before you know it you've watched the whole feature! I watched my advance copy twice. In case you've been living under a rock for the past 50 years, ZZ Top is a blues rock trio absolutely unprecedented in American music. One of the top 100-selling artists or bands with more than 50 million records sold. This documentary tells the story of the band and features great interviews with Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Luckily, I know one of the foremost ZZ Top aficionados: blues and rock vocalist/instrumentalist (as well as writer, humorist and storyteller) Chaz McDonald! Chaz dropped in on _The Paul Leslie Hour _and having both watched the documentary we discussed it. Chaz McDonald has been a fan of the band for decades and we unapologetically hope the commentary inspires you to check out the film.

Yes, those bearded wonders, the trio of ZZ Top would find their breakthrough hit in LaGrange off their third album entitled Tres Hombres. With Billy Gibbons on guitar, Dusty Hill on bass, and Frank Beard (ironically the only member without a beard) on drums, ZZ Top would begin their climb to stardom via Texas blues/rock with this album. ZZ Top started in 1969 in Houston, Texas and are still playing together today after 50 years. We hope you enjoy this treat from the Texas blues trio as much as we do.Waitin' for the BusHave Mercy! This is the first track on the album, and was inspired by "people watching" at the bus stop. Jesus Just Left ChicagoThe second track on the album has no noticeable break from the first, and you will often hear the two played together on the radio. Billy Gibbons said that this song was a gospel-inspired blues number.  Beer Drinkers and Hell RaisersThis hard driving Southern rock piece originated in a stop ZZ Top took one night at a roadside bar near El Paso to avoid a windstorm.  Have You Heard? These days customers are buying much more than roller hot dogs and Twinkies at the convenience store. They're also grabbing delicious, freshly prepared breakfast and ordering catering. And it's not only motorists who are shopping, but the local community. Some of the biggest "c-stores," aka convenience stores, are betting that catering can be profitable. With c-stores increasingly tapping into the quick service restaurant (QSR) and catering markets, these appear to be golden years for the c-store industry. In Part 2 of this podcast, we go inside the mind of Frank Beard, an Analyst for the smartphone app GasBuddy, to explore the opportunity for convenience stores to nab a local base of catering customers. Frank shares how gas station and convenience store operators can take their business beyond their stores' walls to capitalize on the booming catering market. A wave of gas stations and convenience stores is breaking out of the mold of roller-grilled hot dogs and slushies. In response to the market, some stores are offering freshly prepared meals and catering. This is big news. These stores aren't just blurring the lines between convenience stores and quick-service restaurants—they're also disrupting the catering industry. In Part 1 of this podcast, we go inside the mind of Frank Beard, an Analyst for the smartphone app GasBuddy, to learn about the industry landscape of convenience stores. But there is one thing these great players all do have in common. The essence of good ball striking is proper use of the club through the impact zone.
