In this episode, we sit down with Kassi Glassman, owner of Blue Silo Beef, to dive into the realities of being a local farmer today. Kassi shares how farming and beef have been part of her life since birth, and we explore the lesser-known aspects of running a small farm—beyond just caring for cattle. From bookkeeping and inventory management to customer service, farming is as much a business as it is a way of life. We also get into the details of hoof trimming and the different types of grass cows can eat. This conversation was both eye-opening and a blast to have! Sponsored by:

HARLINGEN, Texas - The Port of Harlingen will try again to expand its overweight corridor route in the 89th Legislature starting in January. As in the 88th session, the legislation will be carried by state Rep. Janie Lopez, R-San Benito. The legislation failed to make it into law in 2023, in part because of opposition from the Texas Department of Public Safety. But, says Port of Harlingen Executive Director Walker Smith, the legislation has merit because it would improve safety on the road. In an exclusive interview with Ron Whitlock Reports, Smith explained that three entities in the Rio Grande Valley have the authority to issue permits for shippers to use overweight corridors in the Rio Grande Valley - Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority, the Port of Brownsville, and the Port of Harlingen. He said trucks weighing no more than the Mexican Legal Weight Limit or 125,000 pounds can use an overweight corridor. On a regular corridor they can only carry 80,000 pounds.“If we're able to connect these corridors, it provides flexibility to the transportation system and dedicates those overweight trucks to these dedicated routes,” Smith said.“So, we're going to be looking to extend our overweight corridor from FM 509 to the Hidalgo County-Cameron County line, a 13-mile strip.“The legislation would essentially designate this route, FM, 509, US Highway 281, to the Hidalgo County and Cameron County lines. And at that point, the Hidalgo County RMA corridor would pick up and carry the cargo into the Pharr Bridge, or vice versa.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service website to read the full story. Colorado Department of Transportation and Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are continuing work on the US Highway 550, Main Street, and 14th Street intersection. As of Oct. 27, the intersection will be closed for about 11 days while D&SNGRR replaces the railroad tracks as part of overall safety improvements to the intersection, so be prepared to take alternative routes during the closure. An open call to artists in the Four Corners from the Durango-La Plata County Airport went out last week for three installations in the new baggage claim area. The City of Durango will begin construction on a new trail at Twin Buttes to create more accessible routes to two trails. Part 1 of 2. In early October 1983, a motorcyclist discovered the partially clothed body of a woman in a culvert off US Highway 287, about 17 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. The local Special Crimes Unit immediately began their investigation, fully aware that time was of the essence. Between the body and her clothing, the victim had many identifying features but still, authorities fell short. They felt it meant their Jane Doe wasn't from the Amarillo area. Though decades later they'd discover that assertion was correct, investigators never stopped searching missing persons cases from around the country. But two and a half decades later, they still couldn't match the unidentified victim with any.If you have any information about the murder of Bambi Lynn Dick, please call the Amarillo / Potter / Randall Special Crimes Unit at 806-378-4268.If you'd like more information about Dr. Ralph Erdmann and why some of his determinations in this case should not necessarily be taken as gospel check out our episodes titled: Debra Mackey Part 1: Plainview Jane Doe & Part 2: The Criminal Pathologist from September 2023.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Bugs, babbling brook, overnight in the woods ambience. Quiet y'all, the summertime bugs have something to say. This recording begins just before midnight and continues until about 4 a.m. (I wanted to get in the less-trafficked hours because there was a US Highway a few miles away and a dirt road close by. You will hear some occasional traffic, but not so much that it's annoying.) So get "lost in the woods" like De La Soul did nearly 30 years ago on their opus Buhloone Mindstate. Except in these woods, you won't find Shortie No Mass, Prince Paul, Pos, Mase, or Dave — just a bunch of bugs. And I'm pretty sure a fox or some other wild canine will show up. He had a self-checkout long before Walmart and Target and he still updates his telephone hotline with garden patch conditions and produce availability. Just call 605-693-4871. Meet Sanderson Gardens owner Jan Sanderson, the Rhubarb King and developer of the Sanderson Red rhubarb variety. A visit to Sanderson Gardens on the I-29 corridor just four miles east of Brookings, South Dakota, can mean a quick stop for a pail of strawberries, or hours long in the pumpkin patch letting the kids find the perfect jack-o-lantern and play on the playgrounds, taking fall family photos and enjoying a picnic in the cool fall air. For nearly five decades, generations of families have come to Sanderson Gardens for asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries, aronia berries, pumpkins and more. It's a mostly U-pick commercial garden, but they try to make some pre-picked produce available in the mornings. We talk about how technology has changed the way he gets the word out about what's available and how you can best pick/harvest strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus, raspberries, pumpkins, and aronia berries. Sanderson Gardens supplies fruit to a handful of local wineries and rhubarb roots and horseradish to most seed catalog companies in the country, like Gurney's Seed and Nursery. You'll learn what Jan's dad and an experimental rhubarb patch being plowed up at South Dakota State University had to do with the beginning of Sanderson Gardens. He also shares an interesting story about how he expanded his rhubarb crop in a way that people in a 3-state area had a hand in—in what is now one of the largest rhubarb patches (5-6 acres) in the Midwest. Jan is a three-time state champion high school wrestler who earned a full-ride scholarship to University of Iowa. He was coached by NCAA national champion, world gold medalist and Olympic gold medalist, Dan Gable. Jan was a team co-captain and a two-time all-American and two-time Big Ten individual champion. After graduating, he went on to coach wrestling and teach special education in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. So why did Mr. Sanderson trade the wrestling mat and his classroom to run his own South Dakota, mostly U-pick, commercial gardens 47 years ago? You're about to find out. Learn more about Sanderson Gardens on their website and follow them on Facebook. I also posted a rhubarb custard pie recipe from Jan and photos on randomsweets.com. Today we are discussing The 79th Annual Watermelon Festival in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. Hosted each year since August 1948, the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival and Rodeo celebrates the local watermelon crop with activities, carnival rides and plenty of old-fashioned, family-friendly entertainment. This annual event has become one of the most popular festivals in Oklahoma, attracting over 30,000 visitors each year and serving upwards of 50,000 pounds of juicy, ripe melon to festival-goers. Experience the rodeo on Thursday and Friday before returning on Saturday to sample local acres of black diamond, royal sweet and other watermelon varieties. The festival will also feature all-day fun like a seed-spitting contest, an arts and crafts fair, carnival rides, and more. Rush Springs is a town of less than 1500 residents, however, each summer, it becomes THE place to be as 20,000 people assemble for the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival. The beloved annual tradition has been held in this welcoming town every second Saturday in August since 1948. To learn about the rich history of Rush Springs, stop by the Hampton House Museum on the main strip. When heading into town, keep your eyes peeled to spot the Dinosaur Roadside Ranch on US Highway 81. This attraction features junkyard metal artwork including two giant dinosaurs, an airplane with a tin can man pilot, an assortment of smiley face-themed pieces and more. One of the dinosaur pieces was built out of an old horse trailer and originally used as an animated parade float. It's a great pitstop to snap a photo! Roots go deep in today's show. Come with me to meet fifth-generation farmers, Taylor and Cassandra Sumption, the founders of Anthem Oats. The couple grows and packages premium, gluten-free oats for retail on nearly 400 acres near Frederick, South Dakota, 27 miles north of Aberdeen on US Highway 281, just seven miles south of the North Dakota border, and their packing and offices operation in Frederick. Taylor's great, great grandpa homesteaded in the area in 1882 so Taylor and Cassandra are keeping the family agriculture business alive in what's now 142 years! They're focused on value-added agriculture and vertical integration to build their legacy-based, farm-to-table company—this means we can count of them for many years of delicious steel cut, old-fashioned, and quick oats and instant oatmeal cups and packets in flavors like vanilla chai, peach and cranberry, dark chocolate brownie, super fruit, pumpkin spice, and my personal favorite, maple pecan. Learn more about their products and the family at anthem oats dot com. The photos and recipes that Cassandra shared with us for tiramisu-inspired overnight oats, energy balls, and her bacon cheeseburger meatloaf with secret sauce are on randomsweets.com. What is the only time you start at the red and stop at the green? When you eat a watermelon.. Today we are discussing The 78th Annual Watermelon Festival in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. Hosted each year since August 1948, the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival and Rodeo celebrates the local watermelon crop with activities, carnival rides and plenty of old-fashioned, family-friendly entertainment. This annual event has become one of the most popular festivals in Oklahoma, attracting over 20,000 visitors each year and serving upwards of 50,000 pounds of juicy, ripe melon to festival-goers. Experience the rodeo on Thursday and Friday before returning on Saturday to sample local acres of black diamond, royal sweet and other watermelon varieties. The festival will also feature all-day fun like a seed-spitting contest, an arts and crafts fair, carnival rides, and more. Rush Springs is a town of less than 1,000 residents, however, each summer, it becomes THE place to be as 20,000 people assemble for the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival. #139 - On February 15th, 1991, windsurfers discovered the naked body of a young Jane Doe along US Highway 1 in Key West, Florida. She had been assaulted and strangled. For years, authorities tried to identify the woman and her killer. The only clue they had was that she wasn't from Key West because she didn't have tan lines and wore moccasin shoes. Without a name, she became Valentine Jane Doe because investigators believed she was murdered on Valentine's Day. Could forensic science help give her an identify and catch her killer?Support My WorkIf you love the show, the easiest way to show your support is by leaving us a positive rating with a review. Rundown - Jonny Barber - 05:25 "The Dirty 15" by Jonny Barber - 02:26:38 Troubadour Dave Gunders - 02:31:52 "Rather Be Right" by Dave Gunders - 02:44:16 Schuyler Colfax was a descendant of Revolutionary War heroes, and himself an American hero and abolitionist. A confidante of Abe Lincoln, Speaker of the House Colfax was sent to Colorado with Abe's hopes Colorado would join the Union. Indeed, Colfax so impressed Denverites, they renamed Grand Avenue for him. Jonny Barber came to Colorado via accomplished Mormon family lineage of California, Utah and Nevada fame. When Jonny came to Colorado, he fell in love with Colfax and the Lions Lair, where he performed as a musician, and watched others perform, up and down Colfax. Jonny's performed at the Bluebird, Fillmore, the Satire Lounge, and Red Rocks. Now, Jonny Barber is curator of the Colfax Museum http://www.colfaxavenue.org/p/colfax-museum.html, which has gone through many different incarnations, but has emerged spectacularly in the History Colorado museum in central Denver. This is a special name-dropping episode recounting famous Colfax visitors such as Jack Kerouak, Bob Dylan, the Smothers Brothers, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Chief Jerry Kennedy, Bo Cottrell and the Lawmen, Frank Sinatra Jr., Walt Conley, Pope John Paul II, Sid King, Pete Contos, and Gene Amole. There's talk about famous restaurants, dive bars, entertainment venues, fishing ponds, basilicas, government buildings, mom and pop stores, porn shops, pot stores, liquor stores, meat markets, car dealerships and every possible den of iniquity dotting America's longest commercial retail road. We talk about all things Colfax because Colfax represents life, Colorado, America, the good, the bad and the ugly. Colfax Avenue is US Highway 40, running straight from Atlantic City, through Strasburg, Aurora, Denver, Lakewood, Golden, and onto San Francisco. Main Street USA. As Donald Trump is further revealed to be a traitorous criminal, the GOP still sticks with 45 like stinky poo on one's shoe. As for our show Troubadour Dave Gunders, he's not getting caught up believing anybody's alternative facts, he'd rather be right, as proved by his anti-cult, anti-lie song, named Rather Be Right.
