President Jimmy Carter famously saw a large UFO while on the campaign trail. Russel Crowe has seen a UFO, and Kurt Russel saw the Phoenix Lights UFO while flying into Phoenix. But when you combine the glitzy world of rock and roll with the high strangeness of UFOs the stories get weird fast, and that's why I'm here, to take you Walking on the Moon, get you All Shook Up, and Blinded by the Light. From our beginnings as the IBM Choir over fifty years ago, Spotlight Musical Productions showcases Toronto's most passionate local talent, from our cast to our creative team. At Spotlight, we're proud not only to deliver outstanding productions for our loyal audiences, but also to foster community through our shared love of musical theatre. The music of Elvis comes alive in “All Shook Up”. Inspired by Shakespeare's “Twelfth Night”, “All Shook Up” follows a small Midwestern town that is thrown into a frenzy with the arrival of Chad, a good-looking, motorcycle-riding, roustabout, who rides from town to town with a guitar on his back, blue suede shoes on his feet, and a song in his heart. Repressed by their conservative mayor, the town begins to come alive once more under Chad's influence. Lovers meet, woo, pursue, and more, all in one zany night that will change the town forever. Featuring such Elvis hits as "Love Me Tender", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Can't Help Falling in Love", "Jailhouse Rock", "Blue Suede Shoes", "Don't Be Cruel", and  "It's Now or Never", “All Shook Up” is a rocking, heartwarming tale about following dreams, opening up to love, and the power of music.

Part 2 of the Elvis and Country Music saga picks up right where Justin and guest host Garrett Cash left off, with a deconstruction of both sides of Elvis' first Sun single. Elvis's country career is traced through his time at Sun and on the Louisiana Hayride, dedicating time to sidebar the realities of how flawed the way we discuss and understand country music as a genre during this period will always be due to the historical omission of the countless non-white artists who loved performing country music, but were disincentivized from recording in that genre by A&R reps and studio execs, and rarely allowed a welcome presence with country audiences. And to that end, was Chuck Berry just a country music artist hiding in plain sight all along? We also begin to see the beginnings of the development of the Nashville Sound as Elvis joins RCA and single-handedly popularizes the gospel backing group sound in country music by demanding to work with The Jordanaires. Zig-zagging between the "traditional" country songs Elvis dabbled in during the 1950s and the actual charting country hits he had between 1956-1958, like, you know, All Shook Up, Jailhouse Rock and Hard Headed Woman, we land on the popular notion held in country lore that Elvis simply outgrew country by the late 1950s... but what if the truth was more complicated - and malicious - than how the Nashville establishment, and even more contemporary retrospectives like Ken Burns' Country Music, has told it? Do you get frustrated when the creative process isn't going as planned? Do you get impatient when another artist is not going in the same direction as you hoped?  Patience isn't easy, it requires constant effort and awareness to shift our mindset to remind ourselves that everyone has a different creative approach to art.  Musician/Actor/Singer Jamie McRoberts will remind us in this week's episode that our minds are unique and work differently than everyone else's. Everyone has their own magic or something that they're good at, that's why we can't expect everyone to be in the same page every single time. Even if someone's creative process is different, we all have the same goal which is to provide the best art we could give at that moment. Follow Cue TO Cue! I: @thisischelseajohnson F: @thisischelseajohnson In this episode: How the pandemic allowed Jamie to discover other passions outside of her artistic identity. In order to stay grounded in the ups and downs of the creative lifestyle, Jamie tries to remember that she has so many things outside of the artistic world that matter. Be who you are because you are interesting, you have a story to tell, stop being what people are telling you they think of you because they're coming from the outside in and that's not who people are. Artists are storytellers and community leaders, we can tell stories anywhere and that is why we've survived for so long; people need to hear about other people going through similar things and having that connection. A little about Jamie: Jamie McRoberts is a singer, actor, dancer and musician from Oakville, Ontario. She is a classically trained pianist and vocalist having completed her Grade 8 Royal Conservatory for Voice and her Grade 10 Royal Conservatory for Piano. She has been training as an actor/performer since the age of 5 and as a professional performer has not only performed Canada wide, but has performed Internationally. She graduated George Brown Theatre School's Classical Theatre Conservatory Program and was immediately launched into a professional career predominantly as musical theatre performer. She has received awards and accolades along the way such as the Second City Comedy Award from her theatre school, A Dora Mavor Moore Award as part of the ensemble of The Wizard of Oz at Young People's Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, and has received several nominations for her work on stage. Some of her favourite credits include Rock of Ages at Stage West Calgary, All Shook Up at Stage West Mississauga, The Baker's Wife with Talk Is Free Theatre performed at the iconic Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto, April Fools at the Segal Center in Montreal where she was able to put her musician skills to work as an actor/musician and her performance in For Both Resting and Breeding which was performed in Adelaide, Australia. She is currently in Maggie, a new Canadian Musical created and co-written by Johnny Reid and Matt Murray. She recently decided to dive back into her musician roots, and try her hand at song writing and has found the missing piece to her puzzle. Follow Jamie! Anika Larsen is having a great time as she takes the challenge of both playing the mom on Broadway's "Almost Famous" and being the mom of two boys offstage. Anika's passion for saving the planet is contagious, and as a member of the Broadway Green Alliance and ambassador for Global Goals for Sustainability, she's making sure she can show and tell her children that she really tried to do what she can to pass on a healthy planet. Growing up with 9 brothers and sisters became a defining characteristic of her life and how it made her the compulsive team player that she is today. Juggling working and being a mom in real life, Anika reflects on the good and the bad things that come along with it, and how she languished during the height of the pandemic as a stay-at-home mom. She opens up about being a better mom because she's working, and the beautiful, symbiotic relationship between her home life and stage life now that she's playing a mom in “Almost Famous”. There was a point early in Anika's career when she didn't work for two years, which she considers an invaluable lesson. All the hardships that have happened to her made her smart not just about money but her future as well, and while for her the worst part of being in the industry is the unpredictability of it, she wouldn't trade it for anything. Anika Larsen is an actress who has performed on the Broadway stage in well-received shows like “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” wherein she won Drama Desk Award's Outstanding Feature Actress in a Musical and received a Tony nomination. She also originated the role of Roberta in the cult Off-Broadway musical, "Zanna, Don't!", for which she received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Her other stage credits include "Xanadu", "All Shook Up", "Avenue Q", "Chess", and “Rent” where she made her Broadway debut in 2000. She's a member of the Broadway Green Alliance, a passionate ambassador for the Global Goals for Sustainability, a member of Actor's Equity, and serves on the board at the New York City Children's Theater. Unlike other apps with due date calculators, Bumpdate has an easy-to-read trimester meter and real-time pregnancy calculations by number of weeks and days. While the app predominantly targets pregnant women and parents, it's also a way for family and friends to intimately follow along their journey and remember to check-in during milestone moments and events. Neil saw part of a documentary about "The King", and he is still dead. Condi Rice got permission to testify before the 9/11 Commission. Lucy Lui is behind the Beaded Curtain, and today's poll is "Who do you think is the biggest liar: Condoleezza Rice, George W. Bush, Richard Clark, Michael Moore, John Kerry, Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, Greg Reed, or "Moe" Howard David?" O.J., and Fat Rush were added. Crappy callers, so Neil reads some bedtime stories. Half way through the show he changes to "What's your all time favorite Elvis Presley song?" (pick from) "Elvis sucks, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, All Shook Up, Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock," and many more. Poll building always takes up lots of time.
