Globally, November 19 is acknowledged as the International Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, while November 20 is celebrated as International Children's Day. The momentous days both aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by children, including their rights to education, healthcare, and protection from abuse. In honor of these events, the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment launched the Sidewalk Chalk Activities at the Gros Islet Primary, Vieux Fort Primary, and Beanfield Secondary Schools. The Division of Human Services carried out this initiative. The Community Services Unit also organized an island-wide Self-Awareness Day for children participating in the Community After-School Program (CASP).

We recorded this episode of Speaking Out of Place on Saturday the 18th of November, 2023, as Israel's massive attack on Gaza passed the 40-day mark. Almost immediately after the deadly October 7 Hamas attack, the image of the child, both Israeli and Palestinian, began to dominate the media's coverage, and appeals to international humanitarian law were made to “save the children.” Azeezah Kanji and I decided to create this podcast to coincide with November 20, International Children's Day, in order to take a deeper look at why such appeals to the law must be contextualized both historically and politically. Hedi Viterbo is an associate professor of law at Queen Mary University of London in the UK. His research examines legal issues concerning childhood, state violence, and sexuality from an interdisciplinary and global perspective. His latest book is Problematizing Law, Rights, and Childhood in Israel/Palestine (Cambridge University Press, 2021).Dr. Jess Ghannam is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Global Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at UCSF. His research areas include evaluating the long-term health consequences of war on displaced communities and the psychological and psychiatric effects of armed conflict on children. Dr. Ghannam has developed community health clinics in the Middle East that focus on developing community-based treatment programs for families in crisis.  He is also a consultant with the Center for Constitutional Rights, Reprieve and other international NGO's that work with torture survivors. Hopscotch, marble, string figure…How do you say the games played as a child in English? Children's Day is coming! It is generally believed that people under the age of 14 can celebrate this festival, but everyone is a baby. The International Children's Day is set up to protect children's rights, but it isall aboutadults' business. Children's business is just play. Manypeople did not have smart devices and mobile Internet when they were young. Indoor and outdoor games are the source of happiness to accompany their childhood. We've collected a lot of games. What have you played? The first is some indoor projects, which do not need to run, but mainly use the brain. Chinese CheckersChinese checkers is characterized by its hexagram-shaped board, which can accommodate up to 6 players. The main goal of Chinese checkers is to move all your marbles from your end to the opposite point of the star. Players can move their marbles by "hopping" over a single adjacent marble – one's own or the opponent's – and can continue to hop until there's no more adjacent marble. TangramThe tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat polygons which are put together to form shapes. The objective is to replicate a pattern (given only an outline) generally found in a puzzle book using all seven pieces without overlap. It is reputed to have been invented in China sometime around the late 18th century CE and then carried over to America and Europe by trading ships shortly after. String figureA string figure is a design formed by manipulating string on, around, and using one's fingers or sometimes between the fingers of multiple people. String figures may also involve the use of the mouth, wrist, and feet. The game ends when one of the two players cannot think of any next solution to the current figure or when one player fails to hold the figure with hands. MarbleA marble is a small spherical object often made from glass. These balls vary in size. Marbles can be used for a variety of games called marbles. They are often collected, both for nostalgia and for their aesthetic colors. Players often use their fingers to "shoot" one marble to hit the opponent's marble and can acquire it if it was hit. Hide-and-seekHide-and-seek is a popular children's game in which at least two players conceal themselves in a set environment, to be found by one or more seekers. ShuttlecockThe shuttlecock is made out of rubber or a plastic disk and attached with many feathers. The player's goal is to keep the shuttlecock in the air while kicking it only using the feet repeatedly. Next is the games that have to be played outdoors. Generally, it requires physical strength. The sweat and dirty clothes after playing may make the family members blame a few words. Hoop rollingHoop rolling is both a sport and a child's game in which a large hoop is rolled along the ground, generally by means of an object wielded by the player. The aim of the game is to keep the hoop upright for long periods of time, or to do various tricks. HopscotchHopscotch is a popular playground game in which players toss a small object into numbered triangles or a pattern of rectangles outlined on the ground and then hop or jump through the spaces and retrieve the object. Bamboo dragonflyBamboo dragonfly has a helicopter top axis with a cord wound around it, with a horizontal blade sticking out from the axis. A player would pull the cord and release hands; the bamboo dragonfly will take off vertically in the air like a helicopter. BeanbagsThrowing beanbags is a popular traditional Chinese game for kids in the 80s. These traditional Chinese toys are usually handmade from parents or grandparents. The pitcher will try to hit the opponent with a beanbag; the one that was hit will be eliminated from the game. The opponent who catches the beanbag either will choose to "add a life" or "save a teammate's life" from eliminations. Chinese jump ropeThe Chinese jump rope resembles more of a giant stretched out rubber band. It is a thin piece of elastic rope that is looped around two pairs of legs. The objective of this game is to hook your legs into the rope to form loops and patterns in a certain sequence. This is often accompanied by a rhyme or song. As each level is completed, the rope is moved higher, making the patterns more difficult to complete. Finally, it is natural to invite the ancestor game that decides who comes first and who comes later. Rock paper scissorsRock paper scissors is a hand game in which players simultaneously form one of three shapes with an outstretched hand. These shapes are "rock" (a closed fist), "paper" (a flat hand), and "scissors" (a fist with the index finger and middle finger extended, forming a V). The rule is illustrated in the picture. Normally, one player wins at the end by beating all players with the right shape. Which of the above games have you played? Mother's Day and Father's Day have become important tools in the current market.Real significance of these special days is diminishing though. On the other hand, the International Children's Day, which we commemorated on June 1, is completely neglected. One of the gifts we could give our kids (without spoiling them) could be quality education. A gift in which we give them a future. - Deň matiek a deň otcov sa v dnešnej dobe stali významnými nástrojmi trhu a veľakrát sa ich skutočný význam zlacňuje. The electronic dance music industry is known for its superstar DJs and dynamic club culture, its synonymous with partying hard and good times but perhaps not with so well known as the rock and pop music industry for raising money and supporting charity, despite the billions of dollars dance music generates every year (* yes 2020 apart which has been something of a challenging year). My guest this week set out 10 years ago to change this view and make a difference where he saw not enough being done. He set out to challenge existing beliefs about the contribution dance music could make, to show what could be done when a compassionate industry came together behind a clear purpose and to make an impact in the lives of children in crisis all over the world. Jonny Lee is the visionary founder of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life a charitable foundation creating opportunities & fundraising initiatives to enable the dance music industry to make a positive impact in support of children in crisis. Jonny is a dance music pioneer, an acid house missionary, taker of big risks and a bundle of positive energy. We meet up on the cliffs of south east Ibiza, surrounded by whispering pines, bird song and the hum of cicadas. The spot we meet at is a place Jonny gets huge inspiration from. We talk about his mojo journey and what happened to make him realise he just HAD to do more. Also, how his background in organising huge parties all over the world came in very handy for running a charity - where positive intent is met with synchronicity and magnetism. Jonny defines what the art of giving means to him and the difference the charity has made to lives of thousands of children in crisis. We talk about the last Set For Love project - live stream events bringing DJs of all levels together to fundraise for emergency appeals during lockdown. You can join the likes of Carl Cox and Nightmares on Wax by getting involved in the forthcoming Set For Love on November 20th - which is International Children's Day. You can find out loads more about LNADJ at the website Also give them a follow on Insta @lnadj_charity or their Facebook page And as I also mentioned last week, there is now some music to go with these mojo stories. I've asked all my guests to date to select just one song that really fuels their mojo. You can find the Spotify playlist here - Jonny's pick is a cracker! Quote to learn for todayI think that inside every adult is the heart of a child. We just gradually convince ourselves that we have to act more like adults.
