Our friend and fellow podcaster just down the road from us, Jacob Espinoza, joins us in studio. Jacob and Chris have both learned a great deal from podcasting--particularly the amazing potential every human being has to unlock their potential through their ideas, what they are capable of, what they can overcome, and who they can become. We dive into some key elements that we've noticed, from the abstract to the practical, when it comes to helping others (and ourselves) actualize. Learn more about Jacob at https://jacobespinoza.com/ and listen to one of his popular podcasts, Salem Emerging Leaders, on iTunes and Spotify.
Episode 2 told the story of how God used sobriety and a bachelor party to to answer Jacob's questions about the reality of God and Christianity. In this bonus episode Jacob talks about the role his faith plays in how he does leadership development, how Christians can better use social media, and about how he's tried to help others get sober even while the pandemic caused him to struggle with his own sobriety. At the end of this episode you'll hear a powerful testimony that was submitted to us by a listener named Jerry Dugan. His story begins with him about to cross a minefield into Iraq and ends with God answering his prayer in an unexpected way. You should definitely stay until the end to hear it. Today's guest is the senior pastor at Creekside Bible Church. We have been friends for probably 20 years, but haven't talked in a long time. We reminisce, talk about his experience leading a church, and discuss the merits of Cobra Kai. We had a fun time and even if you're not into religious content, I think you'll like this episode just because Chad is a great guy! We did have some trouble with the internet so a few sections are choppy Sorry, I did my best to edit it out. He also has a new podcast out called, Testimony, where he talks to people about their story of how they became a Christian. It is available on all major platforms. His first guest is Grayson Boucher, aka The Professor, who has dodged my podcast for the time being. His second guest, episode just posted, is Jacob Espinoza, who was cool enough to be on this pod as well (Ep 49 if you want to check it out) You can follow Chad on Instagram and again you can find his new podcast on Spotify, Apple Pods etc. Thank you again! Hope you're having an amazing week!
Jacob Espinoza used to be a vital part of the Northwest hip hop scene. He had success as a rapper (you'll hear parts of his songs in this episode) and ran a successful online magazine promoting hip hop culture in Oregon and Washington. Today he is a leadership consultant that helps thousands of people lead better. Jacob grew up Catholic, but in high school he told his priest that he had too many questions to go through with Confirmation; he walked away from Christianity altogether. After this he ended up on a "hamster wheel," living for the next weekend...the next party. This is the story of how God used sobriety and a bachelor party to answer Jacob's question and how those answers brought a clarity to his life that has turned him into one of Salem, Oregon's most influential leaders. Episode 1 shared the testimony of Grayson Boucher (aka "The Professor), telling the story of how God used basketball, a funeral, and a sermon by NBA star Mark Jackson to lead him to Christianity. In this bonus episode Grayson talks about the role his brother played in his testimony (and vice versa), the furthest he ever felt from God, the importance of personal study in developing his faith, and how he almost got beat up in China for throwing a ball off of someone's head during a game. This episode also contains a preview of the next full length episode which will tell the story of how and why Jacob Espinoza became a Christian. If you like hip hop and/or leadership, you don't want to miss it! At the end of this episode you'll hear our first ever user submitted testimony. It is a powerful story of God moving Nicole Wangler into a relationship with him and away from fear one step at a time. Those steps include a new friendship, a retreat, going to church, and the encouragement of her uncle. Make sure to stay to the end to hear the powerful story of how and why Nicole became a Christian. With emotional intelligence responsible for 80% of our success, it's important for leaders at all levels to be intentional about developing their emotional intelligence. Fortunately, we are able to improve our EQ with hard work and focus. What is EQ? The authors of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 describe it as, “Your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships.” We recommend sending out an anonymous survey to your peers to see if they agree or disagree with the statements below. I feel comfortable approaching my leader for help when needed My leader listens when I provide them with feedback that is about them My leader is proactive in helping me when I need it My leader effectively managers conflict on the team and with their peers I see my leader ask for help when they need it Join the conversation by following @MrJacobEspi on Twitter and Instagram. How well do you understand what motivates you and the value you bring to the people around you? Today we break the concept of self-awareness into two segments, motivation and value. Motivation is an internal look at self-awareness, including how we react to situations and how well we know how to keep ourselves motivated. Value being an external perspective and an understanding of what we have to offer that will benefit the people around us. Stay in touch on Twitter and Instagram, @MrJacobEspi. www.JacobEspinoza.com

“Our contract with life is a contract that is brokered with fragility, and with sadness, and with anxiety. And if we’re going to authentically and meaningfully be in this world, we cannot focus on one dimension of life and expect that focusing on that dimension is going to then give us a well-rounded life.” Susan David's book Emotional Agility breaks down the importance of accepting the wide range of emotions we feel as part of the human experience, and the importance of understanding how to engage with them correctly instead of attempting to control them. We need to move away from emotional rigidity and towards emotional agility. She breaks Emotional Agility into four steps, 1. Showing Up (Taking a moment to feel our emotions and look at them with curiosity) 2. Stepping Out (Step away from our emotions and label them as something we are feeling instead of using them as a definition) 3. Walking Your Why (Take a moment to define your values) 4. Moving On (Making changes in your habits that align your time and actions with your values) For more visit www.JacobEspinoza.com.
“A great leader takes leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” - Rosalynn Carter Todd Henry’s Herding Tigers connects the dots between concepts and practical application for leaders of creative teams. (Fact: If you are leading problem solvers, you are leading a creative team.) A major problem new leaders face is that they are often hired for their skills as doers and not for their skills as leaders. This means there is an additional skill set necessary for them to be successful. Keys to success: > Give your team stability and challenge them > Make sure your actions demonstrate to your team that you have their back > Stop doing the work, shift from creator to leader > Focus your team’s attention, give them the resources they need and keep them motivated (Focus, Function, Fire) > Accept short-term failure as part of the learning curve when striving for long-term success > Teach principles to gain influence > Never excuse failure, use it as an opportunity to learn Find me on Twitter and Instagram @MrJacobEspi For a full list of resources check out www.JacobEspinoza.com
