October 30, 2015 was a memorable day for Odd Pittsburgh host John Schalcosky. Late KDKA midday host Mike PIntek invited him on the show for a couple segments to talk ghosts, ghouls and odd stories about Pittsburgh. Pintek ended up doing something that day he had never done in all his years of hosting, he had John on for almost the entire show! We wanted to remember our friend Mike and remember the great conversation that day. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information. Learn more about your ad choices. Spooky Stories started as a salon in Marta's living room complete with friends wearing pj's, psychics, and many a late night conversation. After releasing the episode to the public on Marta's show Marta On The Move Podcast, her and John soon recieved many email requests to make this event live so the public can join in the fun. Last year they held the first public performance of True Spooky Stories at Carnegie Coffee House, and the tickets sold out within days. This year, they decided to have a larger venue for a greater opportunity for more citizens to join in the fun. Thanks to the support from Barebones Production Company located in historic Braddock, PA. True Spooky Stories will be held there this October 14th at 6:30pm. Join Marta and John as they uncover history that will make your toes curl in a live podcast with homemade sound effects. After four years, friends John and Marta have gone on ghost hunts, uncovered crazy historical information about Pittsburgh, and they truly love the Halloween season and bringing this history to light. You will laugh, be spooked and learn some interesting history of Pittsburgh you may have never known." Sponsored by Helicon Brewing and Barebones Productions

#117 Cinema Psychos Show Podcast October is here (my goodness it came way too early) which means I am knee deep into the lead up to Halloween features for the show, and discovering all sorts of horror movies to watch. I have a special affinity for B horror films, and love finding new ones. When I was younger I always wanted to be a film critic. I had visions of myself sitting next to Roger Ebert at 12 years of age, giving my take on the latest film to arise. It is one of the reasons I love film review podcasts. There are a few great ones here in Pittsburgh, and the top two in my mind are You Can't Handle The Truth Podcast and Cinema Psychos Show Podcast. I have had YCHTT on the show before, and was excited to sit down with THE Cinema Psychos- Brian Cottington, Laine Wooliscroft and John Wooliscroft (Johnny Nitro). This was a super fun discussion about three friends who met over their love of film, and film making. We chat our favorite B horror movie titles, and I got to discover a bunch that I had never heard of! I cannot wait to check some of the titles out that I scribbled furiously down during the recording. Some of which include- "Orka", "Sleep Over Camp", "Night of the Demons", "The Tingler", "Troll 2", "Death Bed", "Birdemic; Shock and Terror", and two of my personal favorites- "The Stuff", "The Hunger" (David Bowie is a vampire guys!) These guys are the go to guys for checking out and reviewing films, and remember, don't eat while watching "Society" according to Brian. Check out their podcast on Epicast, Sticher, iTunes, and I heart Radio! What is your favorite B Horror movie? Let us know! This is the lead up to Halloween! Enjoy previous episodes with Gemma Hoskins from The Netflix show The Keepers, Mia La Monica, Tom Savini, and a whole lot more over the years. Also join us for our True Spooky Stories of Pittsburgh LIVE Podcast on October 14th at Barebones Productions. Free Craft Beer, Tarot Readings, and stories you have never heard unearthed by Marta Mazzoni and John Schalcosky.

#82 Patrick Jordan Serendipity : the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for Unfortunatly, when I say the word Serendipity, you may think of a very bad romantic comedy starring John Cusack. I know, because that is what I thought of any time I heard that word. No longer is that the case for me. Now when I think of that word, a person comes to mind by the name of Patrick Jordan. I met Patrick at a Deep Local party, and was introduced by our mutual friend Jeff Swenson. Little did we know our history at that time, but we do now! You just have to listen to the episode to hear it. I will tell you that Patrick Jordan is the Artistic Director of his company Barebones Productions in Pittsburgh, PA. A local theater company that pushes the envelope, bringing plays to life that have an edge, or grit. I saw my first (but not last), Barebones production of The Elaborate Entrance Of Chad Diety at The Ace Hotel recently, and was blown away by the production. It was a sold out show, and I had such a blast during it. I couldn't wait to have Patrick on to grill him about the in's and out's of putting that show together. I mean, there was a real wrestling ring! Little did I know, we were going to have an epic and hilarious chat. Topics discussed- What exactly happened to Patrick's phone. The history of Barebones Putting together The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety Acting challenges In Pittsburgh Patrick's crush on Matthew Modine Voice Over Work Patrick's ability to hypnotize himself Marta's dark secrets. What didn't we talk about? #81 Pittsburgh Speakeasies with John Schalcosky and Mike Mills Hey all! This month I am keeping up with the Pittsburgh Drinks theme, and offering a part two to the episode prior to this one that featured Sean Enright and Cody McDevitt. If you haven't listened to that one yet, I suggest you do! It is full of interesting drinks recipes, tips, and facts about Pittsburgh that are featured in their book, Pittsburgh Drinks. We touch on Pittsburgh speakeasies on that episode, but I wanted to take that a step farther, and bring on my true, and trusted researcher of pretty much everything, John Schalcosky from The Odd, Fascinating, and Mysterious History Of Pittsburgh to dig up what he found on Pittsburgh speakeasies. I also wanted to pair that with some whiskey tasting tips in honor of The Whiskey Rebellion Festival, and age old bootleggers. Mike Mills joins us, and instructs us on how to taste whiskey properly, along with some other tips for your at home consumption. We chat about where the term speakeasy comes from, what made it relevant, the term Blind Tiger (If you don't know what that is, you will love this), what our favorite idea of a speakeasy would be in Pittsburgh, and much, much more. I love the energy of this episode. We had a great time, and I hope you will too. So grab that snifter, pour yourself a nib, and come join us. Hope to see everyone at the Pittsburgh Drinks book release party on March 27th! Pittsburgh has a very long, and semi forgotten history in the world of cocktails. I just recently learned about a lot of it through the book Pittsburgh Drinks : A History of Cocktails, Nightlife & Bartending Tradition by Sean Enright, and Cody Mcdevitt. If you are a listener of my show, you know I love a great cocktail, and am constantly striving to improve my mixing abilities at home. With that in mind, I wanted to do a 2 part release featuring, and praising Pittsburgh as not just an incredible town for craft cocktails, but also showcasing that our history in this area is richer than most would think. Part 1 Pittsburgh Drinks with Sean Enright and Cody Mcdevitt. This episode bring the incredible talents of these two gentleman. Sean starts us off in the episode to aid in our Craft Cocktail Series, teaching those at home how to up their game at making cocktails. He mixes up (out of my very short supply), two cocktails that you can easily make at home to impress your guests, or have on a random Tuesday evening to treat yourself. Maggie's Farm Rum is the main focus of these cocktails, and makes for a perfect sip. Thank you for sponsoring this episode! Love having distilleries thriving in Pittsburgh once again! The second half of our podcast we bring in Cody Mcdevitt, an award winning journalist that teamed up with Sean to bring their book Pittsburgh Drinks to life! This episode touches on Pittsburgh craft cocktail history, the process of publishing, recording, and documenting recipes, and information from folks involved with the book. There was a lot I didn't know about our town, and I am sure you will be just as surprised as I was to learn that Pittsburgh is a key city in the craft cocktail world. I also love the recipes included within it's pages, along with pictures of what your cocktail "should" look like. Don't worry if it doesn't just try, try again! Hope to see everyone at the book release party on March 27th at Spirit! It is sure to be an awesome event that is full of surprises. You can purchase your own copy of the beautifully designed, and written book here. Stay tuned for the next episode that shines more knowledge about Pittsburgh's Speakeasy history, and included a Whiskey 101 Tasting session with Mike Mills, and John Schalcosky from The Odd, Fascinating, and Mysterious History of Pittsburgh! Don't forget to subscribe to the newsletter to get episode first, and also unvarnished content. Cheers! Sean Enright making cocktails from Maggie's Farm Rum for Pittsburgh Drinks Cody McDevitt and Sean Enright chat about the history of Pittsburgh cocktails Cody Mcdeviit, Sean Enright, and Marta Mazzoni on Marta On The Move Podcast for Pittsburgh Drinks. This episode is sponsored by Maggie's Farm Rum located in the heart of the the Strip District. "Our awards for Maggie’s Farm Rums, including, but not limited to, Pennsylvania Distillery of the Year, Best-of-Category Spiced Rum, Best-in-Class Rum, and Best-in-Show Spirit, all from prestigious American craft and international spirits competitions make us one of the most awarded distilleries in America since our inception in October of 2013. Allegheny Distilling is an urban distillery located in the historic Strip District of Pittsburgh and maker of Maggie’s Farm Rum, the first commercially-available Pennsylvania-made craft rum since Prohibition. Maggie’s Farm is more about what it isn’t, a corporate entity where marketing gimmicks and bottom lines trump taste and quality. Maggie’s Farm is an independent craft distillery founded without the support of banks, venture capitalists, and rich relatives. All of our rums are distilled from turbinado, a raw cane, rather than molasses and pot-distilled for body and flavor on 100% copper Spanish-made stills. All of our aged rums are now pushing two years old and aged in neutral rum casks, same as most Caribbean distillers do, to preserve the flavors and aromas produced by tertiary esterification, rather than the oaky flavors produced by new charred or ex-whiskey casks used by most American craft rum distillers. All of our stills and manufacturing processes are on display right behind the cocktail bar in our distillery’s tasting room located in Pittsburgh’s industrial Strip District."

When something gets national press, AND it is in your own backyard, it should make you want to investigate it, and find out what makes it so unique. Scott created Scarehouse over 20 years ago, and it continues to be one of the most entertaining, creative, breakthrough haunted houses in the country. It has been featured by CBS News, ABC News, Forbes Magazine, and the best (in my opinion) Geek and Sundry! We talk about everything that goes into creating an escape room, why they decided to make one, what is in store for the next one (Yes, there will be more!), and also talk some clues for this particular room, and the mysteries surrounding D. Sykes, and the minotaur legends. MUAHA. Enter The Imaginarium is giving away a free ticket for this episode! Simply tag two friends in the comments to be entered in the drawing! Hey all! Welcome to this very special quick pop up interview I got to have with the one and only Alec Baldwin. I am a huge fan of his work, so I can pretty much scratch this off of my bucket list #882. Alec was in Pittsburgh for his show Alec's Playlist at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. It was a great event, with perfectly performed pieces. My favorite was the music from The Shining, that was so hauntingly put together. The Hilaria & Alec Baldwin Foundation donated 300 tickets to families and their children, giving them a chance to hear this beautiful symphony. Growing up in a musical family that exposed me to the classics was very important in my life, and shaped who I am today. I love what his foundation is doing to help get this music into the lives of the youth. Kudos. Thank you Mr. Baldwin for your time, and if you are reading this, come back on the show! Sorry about the audio background noise, it was a little loud in the room because everyone was so excited. Special thanks to my hubby Phil Mazzoni for snapping these photos. If you subscribe to my newsletter you will get to see the rest of the shots. Marta On The Move is sponsored by Levity Pgh. All listeners get $5 off their floats with code "Marta". So I recently just got back from my solo volunteer project in Portugal to help build houses for the homeless, and I hunkered down in my second experience staying in a Hostel. Hostels are a hot topic in the travel world, and thanks to many horror movies that have been released featuring them, they have not gotten a good rap in some people's minds. I am here to change people's perceptions of that. I had an incredible time at the hostel I stayed at, and met so many interesting people while residing there. I thought, what better way to highlight the good things about hostels, than to investigate Pittsburgh's very own! Introducing Jon Potter who created Not Another Hostel, Pittsburgh's first hostel! I could not wait to sit down with this extremely motivated and fascinating dude. Very much like myself, Jon wanted to bring different ideas and cultural traditions back to his hometown, and he is using his travels to influence locals. Along with my great friend, John Schalcosky from The Odd, Mysterious, and Fascinating History of Pittsburgh, we chat with Jon about why he started his hostel, what influenced him, and what people should come to expect when thinking about choosing one on their trips. Here is hoping to opening up a whole new world to travelers! Keep it moving everybody! Marta On The Move is sponsored by Levity Pgh. What am I going to say about this group that doesn't sum it up in the title. Besides the fact that they are die hard gamers, they are also the nicest and most fun people to hang out with. I invited the administrators and creators of the group, Christopher Morgan, Brian Wissner "Wizz", Colt Dalmaso, and just for fun my great friend John Schalcosky to my house for this podcast, the guys showed up with a television and about 40 games from random systems. I was in my heaven. We had the best time hanging out, playing games, talking memories, and drinking beer. I felt like a kid again, if just for an evening. The podcast only lasted about an hour, but we got to hang well into the evening after the mics turned off. I cannot wait to have them on again soon. Aside from our nerdy conversations about our favorite moments in retro gaming, we managed to include some really great material, and answer some questions that anyone who has any interest in playing, selling, or collecting games would want to know. My eyes were opened even more into the world of retro games, and I don't plan on shutting them any time soon. Please go check them out at Pittsburghretrogaming.com, follow them on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram CONTEST ALERT!!! They are so cool they are doing a raffle for this episode! One lucky winner will get Gauntlet Legends (One of my favs) for Nintendo 64. John Schalcosky is a native of Pittsburgh, who had a curious nature about some things he had seen in our town and wanted to delve deeper into where they came from. Almost a year later, he is now working hand in hand with Carnegie Museums, and various institutions around town, giving speeches, and is on his way to creating a book about the collections of histories he has found. I wanted to bring him on as a regular (look for the Halloween podcast!), and hear some of the strange history that we have here in Pittsburgh. I was blown away by some of the stories he tells on this podcast, and you will be too. Truly one of my favorite episodes. I can't wait to have him on again to hear what else he has dug up!
