On deck this week is a sentimental recent fav, Mike Mills' beautiful black-and-white tribute to modern day youngsters and the state of mind that is “uncle.” C'Mon C'Mon casts Joaquin Phoenix as a radio journalist who takes in his sister's kid when she has to handle the father's mental health crisis.
"I would tell my younger self – stop playing it safe. Be braver. Be bolder. And believe, really believe, that you are capable of more than you think!" – Mike Mills, Managing Director (Service Providers) at Gamma, in conversation with Anurag AggarwalFrom handing out free internet CDs at a PC World store in the north of England…to discovering the company that built all the infrastructure behind those very CDs…to joining them and building a career that has spanned 25 extraordinary years –Mike's journey into telecom is fascinatingly brilliant! In this episode of Humans of Telecom, Mike opens up about:
The fastest way to time-travel is to press play on a song you haven't heard in years, then realize you still know every word. We pull up the Billboard Hot 100 from May 23, 1981 and take it for a spin, bouncing between classic rock, radio pop, and the kind of tracks that were simply unavoidable if you lived anywhere near a car stereo or a skating rink.Along the way, we dig into what's actually happening inside these hits: Billy Squier's “The Stroke” as a music business story, Santana's “Winning” as a case of “this does not sound like Santana,” and the emotional weight of George Harrison's “All Those Years Ago,” made even heavier by the Beatles connections around it. We also hit Tom Petty's “The Waiting,” Hall and Oates' “You Make My Dreams,” and the early MTV effect that turned songs into permanent memories, for better or worse. Then we get personal: a Jefferson Starship chorus becomes a full-on dinner-table bit, Rick Springfield's “Jessie's Girl” comes with a wild songwriting backstory, and REO Speedwagon's “Take It On The Run” gets a deep breakdown of why a vocal and a guitar solo can feel like one continuous emotional punch. We close out the chart with the weird brilliance of Stars on 45 and the long reign of Kim Carnes' “Bette Davis Eyes,” then jump to a modern live-music recap featuring Kevin Kinney, Peter Buck, and a surprise Mike Mills appearance, plus a quick Ramones spotlight and a final Van Halen 5150 tangent. If you love 1980s music, classic rock storytelling, and honest takes on music history, subscribe, and share this with a friend who lived through it.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. In April and May of 1986, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe walked the streets of Bloomington and recorded Lifes Rich Pageant at Mellencamp's Belmont Mall Studio in Brown County.* So how could we resist getting in the wayback machine to dig up some stories? David Brent Johnson, our college rock oracle, led us back to 1986. Along the way we heard from Zirque Boner, James Combs, Mark McCormick, Kelly Walsh, Barb Stahl, and Lawrence Wells. *By the way, that's not a typo. According to music journalist Tim Peacock, "Peter Buck stated: 'We all hate apostrophes. Michael insisted, and I agreed, that there's never been a good rock album that's had an apostrophe in the title.'" "Talk About The Pageant: When R.E.M. In this episode, I sit down with Mike Mills. Mike is a past participant of Next Level Experience and someone I have a ton of respect for as a man. We get into his journey over the last couple of years, including completing 75 Hard not once, but twice. But what stood out most in this conversation is that it wasn't about the physical transformation. It was about what it did for him mentally, emotionally, and the level of ownership he's now operating from. Mike shares how going through NLE helped shift his perspective and pushed him to step into a bigger version of himself. Not just for his own life, but now in the work he's doing helping other men level up across mind, body, and spirit. We also touched on something deeper. The passing of his father from ALS and how that experience forced him to take a hard look at his life. It lit a fire under him to stop waiting, stop playing small, and really take control of the direction he's heading. This is a powerful conversation about growth, responsibility, and what it actually looks like to become the man you know you're capable of being. If you're someone who knows you've got more in the tank, this one will hit. Steve Gorman spent nearly three decades providing the backbeat for one of rock's most turbulent bands — and he's got the memoir to prove it. In his book, “Hard to Handle,” the Black Crowes' drummer laid bare the dysfunction, drama, and grind of life inside a band that was as volatile offstage as it was electric on it. Now, with the Crowes nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gorman deep into a new project — the supergroup Howl Owl Howl, alongside Hootie & the Blowfish's Darius Rucker and R.E.M.'s Mike Mills — he's got plenty of perspective on what it takes to survive a legendary band, trust the groove, and enjoy the ride.

Today's guest may be one of the hardest working guests I've ever had. Please welcome, straight from Normandy, France, Stephane Schuck. Stephane talks about the music that inspired him as a kid. It isn't your standard rock and roll background. Maybe part of that is growing up in France, maybe part is just Stephane's unique angle on music. He formed a group that eventually came to known as The Salt Collective. But that isn't his day job. Instead of music, Stephane went into medicine. Both hemispheres of his brain are constantly working! He talks about working with some of his heroes with his own music, changing his band's name, and what happened when he was diagnosed with leukemia. The Salt Collective has a new album out called A Brief History of Blindness. It features Mike Mills, Aimee Mann, Pat Sansone, and former podcast guests Chris Stamey and Django Haskins (among others). It's a wonderful album that you can stream in the usual places or buy it on Bandcamp or thesaltcollective.propellersoundrecordings.com. Follow the group @thesaltcollective on Instagram & Facebook. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Support us through performanceanx.threadless.com or ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, accomplished producers and performers on their own, came together to produce one of rock's greatest debut albums, R.E.M.'s Murmur. That 1983 classic plus the preceding, Easter-produced EP, Chronic Town, have gotten the all-analog, One Step treatment in a numbered, limited-edition vinyl release from Interscope-Capitol's Definitive Sound Series. We reunited Easter and Dixon to discuss the making of Murmur plus the follow-up they produced, Reckoning. What did they each bring to the process? Why does one of them consider Murmur to be the Dark Side of the Moon of the New Wave era? What had changed by the time they recorded Reckoning? Easter also talks about working again with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills on the latest Baseball Project album, and Easter and Dixon offer details about Murmur that even this longtime R.E.M. fanatic found revelatory. (You'll never hear “Radio Free Europe” or “Perfect Circle” in the same way.)
For the 20th anniversary of Design Matters, Debbie Millman revisits conversations with acclaimed directors Brian Koppelman, Thomas Kail, Mike Mills, Sarah Polley, and Siân Heder. These excerpts explore the director's role as the central collaborator, guiding creative teams and shaping a project from vision to execution. Together, they reflect on the choices, pressures, and responsibilities of bringing a story to life. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Every year or so, someone with inside knowledge announces a date upon which the world will definitely end. So everyone hunkers down, and then the only thing that happens is every radio station plays R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." The apocalyptic event you actually can bank on is an annual occurrence called the Holiday Season. Thus, this. Three Wise Guys: M.
