Escuchar audio

Tá sé ráite ag an Aire Stáit James Lawless, gur féidir eitiltí PSO a chur as an áireamh sa teorann atá le cur ar líon na bpaisinéirí in Aerfort BhÁC, ach tá Mary ag rá nach mbeidh glacadh aici leis an mhéid seo go bhfeicfidh sí é i scríbhinn. This week I am pleased to share a wide-ranging conversion with New York-based painter and musician, Adam Henry who, in a first here at PSO, contributed both the image and the soundtrack for PSO no. 233, Apparation in Formation.Porch Swing Orchestra is an art project exploring the relationship between sound and images. Most images are taken on the site where the sound was created and/or recorded. Our orchestra comprises of birds, guitars, artists, poets, and passing cars that spontaneously create ephemeral symphonic chance-inspired compositions. The original site and hub for all things PSO can be found at porchswingorchestra.org.Adam Henry holds a BFA in Art and Art History from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from The Yale School of Art. His recent exhibitions include solo shows at Candice Madey in New York City, River Valley Arts Collective, in Hudson, NY; The Ice House, in Garrison, NY; Meessen De Clercq, in Brussels, and group shows at SALTS, Birsfelden, Switzerland; Josée Bienvenu Gallery, New York; Rita Urso, Milan, Italy; Dia Horia, Mykonos, Greece; and Bill Brady, in Miami Meessen De Clercq published a monograph on his work from 2011–16. For PSO no.233, Adam has paired an image of his 48 x 60-inch painting with a five-minute soundscape crafted on a 1981 Yamaha synthesizer which we will hear after our conversationWe cover a ton of ground in our conversation ranging from ideas of perception, skateboard magazines, authenticity in painting and punk rock, and publicly crying in contemporary art spaces. This week I am excited to share a conversation with the brilliant and multi-talented composer, conductor, and musician Joe Williams who contributed a beautiful improvised piece for PSO entitled, no.231 Going Nowhere Well from Sante Fe, Mexico paired with field recording made in Austin, Texas.Joe Williams holds a Doctorate in Performance from the University of Texas and holds a Masters from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico. He is currently Artistic Director and Director of the Austin Classical Guitar Youth Orchestra at Austin Classical Guitar in Austin, Texas. In this conversation we talk about metal in the desert, high school grunge, the value of changing frameworks of success, and the beauty of improvisation among many many other things. After our conversation, we will hear his classical guitar improvisation recorded for PSO no. 231 Going Nowhere Well and a selection of pieces Joe has composed and/or played in, including a wild wall of sound written for 70 guitarists, a portion of a score for Alfred Hitchcock's silent film The Lodger, performed by the Texas Guitar Quartet which features Bion Tsang on cello. Finally, we will hear a piece called “A New Home” excerpted from a larger work entitled I/We 2020, a multimedia concert, inspired by interviews with Syrian & Iraqi refugees during their first 90 days in Austin. That piece begins with a sound collage of interviews conducted and assembled by Travis Marcum. The piece also has an amazing accompanying film work by ARCOS a team comprised of choreographer Erica Gionfridda and artist Eliot Grey Fisher.LinksPorch Swing Orchestra Website https://porchswingorchestra.org/Austin Classical Guitar https://austinclassicalguitar.org/Journey with Matt Hinsley, Justin Jay Hines, and Joe Williams, https://austinclassicalguitar.org/event/acg-originals-journey-with-matt-hinsley-friends/?event=35656Michael Chapdelaine https://www.michaelchapdelaine.com/Patricia Ann Repar https://music.unm.edu/faculty/patricia-ann-repar/A New Home from I/We 2020 featuring ARCOShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gNuoR_cbbM Get full access to Porch Swing Orchestra at porchswingorchestra.substack.com/subscribe
It's the Friday news roundup! We're looking at both national political conventions to see how Pennsylvanians talked about local issues and celebrating the golden anniversary of an iconic Pittsburgh landmark. Plus, Covid cases are on the rise, and Giant Eagle is dropping GetGo — but another bird is swooping in. We always cite our sources: Giant Eagle is dropping GetGo but the new owners, Couche-Tard, will keep the myPerks loyalty program. Covid cases are on the rise in Pgh and elsewhere, and the new vaccine isn't ready yet. The CDC tracks Covid levels in wastewater, and so does the state, which has a county by county dashboard. Only about a quarter of Allegheny County residents got the last Covid vaccine. The stakes are especially high for Allegheny County because respiratory illnesses don't play well with poor air quality. A bunch of PA and Pgh folks spoke at their respective party conventions, including organizer Erin Koper and Senate candidate Dave McCormick at the RNC and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Gov. Josh Shapiro at the DNC. At the RNC, Koper talked about Pittsburgh police staffing levels, which are rising, and homicides, which have fallen since the year she cited on stage. Homicides rose in 2022 all over the nation. The Democratic roll call doubled as a dance party, featuring both “Motownphilly” and “Black and Yellow” for Pennsylvania. Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker, who welcomed VP candidate Tim Walz to talk to the Quips football team last week, gave the first remarks. Point State Park and our enormous fountain are celebrating their combined 50th birthdays. We talk about some of their most fun facts in this week's news quiz. City Paper has a great deep dive into its history, too. Nurses at West Penn Hospital authorized a labor strike this week, and striking workers at the Post-Gazette are nearing two years off the job. The PSO is on its European tour. They'll be back in Pittsburgh to open their new season in September. Besides baton diplomacy, there's a lot of other ways we foster connections with other countries. Exciting news for those in the PSO world! The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit issued an opinion (In re Baycare Medical Group, 101 F.4th 1287 (11th Cir. 2024)) on May 14, 2024 that expands the scope of information, known as “Patient Safety Work Product,” protected by the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (“PSQIA”). The Court rejects the “sole purpose” test articulated by other courts and the Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”), finding that the test and HHS's guidance “contradicts” the PSQIA's final regulations. The “sole purpose” test was extremely limiting in what providers could categorize as Patient Safety Work Product because the information had to be generated solely for reporting to a PSO. Now, with the Eleventh Circuit's rejection of the test, it allows additional types of information to qualify as Patient Safety Work Product. Join Horty, Springer and Mattern partners Dan Mulholland and Charlie Chulack for a discussion of the PSQIA, the “sole purpose” test, the In re Baycare Medical Group case, and how the opinion will affect PSOs, and providers that contract with PSOs, during the podcast “Patient Safety Organizations – New Court Case Provides New Opportunities.”

Welcome to the show. Today we're tackling a topic that sends chills down the spines of many: mastering auditions. Whether you're aiming for a spot in an orchestra, prepping for a college jury, or even gearing up for that pivotal job interview, the anxiety and fear of auditions is a universal experience.Auditions can feel like stepping into the unknown, a daunting challenge that tests not only your skills but also your nerves. But here's the good news: just like any other challenge, the more you familiarize yourself with the process, the less intimidating it becomes. Remember the first time you rode a bike or spoke in public? The fear melted away with practice and preparation, and auditions are no different. Our guest on this episode is Micah Wilkinson, principal trumpet with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Micah has been on both sides of the audition table and understands the nuances that can make or break a performance. Our hope is that by the end of this episode, you'll feel more confident and equipped to tackle your next big opportunity with ease. Let's turn those audition fears into triumphs!Episode Highlights:-Micah shares his musical background in the Atlanta area...02:25-"You have what it takes to be a principal player"; a mentor spurs on a promising career...06:06-Micah's personal experience with auditions (what worked, what didn't)...12:05-Success in certain roles requires a certain amount of "healthy arrogance"...17:25-Focus on the music vs. YOU and no one hardly notices the mistakes...23:19-How do you play "consistently"; and what does "consistency" even mean?...28:35-How a giant whiteboard and recording device can help you track progress on audition prep...32:00-"There's no doubt in my mind the person who won [the recent PSO audition] was more prepared than anyone else"...35:00-View articulation more as properly expressing the language of the music vs. tonguing or fingering with a certain technique...43:00-Plus whatever your discerning ears deem worthy of your time and interest...Episode Sponsor:MF Lip GripAbout the Guest:Micah Wilkinson has enjoyed a varied career as an orchestral musician, soloist, chamber artist, and teacher. He was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra by Music Director Manfred Honeck in September 2017. Wilkinson came to the Pittsburgh Symphony from the San Diego Symphony, where he served as Principal Trumpet for three years. On today's pod, we are celebrating PSO's first solo art show at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in New York City with a listen to Side B of the lathe cut LP produced in a limited edition of 20 for the show. Side A includes eight of the nine past PSO pieces whose images are framed, and Side B is a suite of 4 movements recorded among trains and the dust of the famous West Texas town of Marfa. The second movement was featured on porchswingorchestra.org as PSO no.226, Ziggy Ice Plant, Marfa, Texas, March 13, 2024.The exhibit at Klaus features selections from nine past PSOs whose pictures are framed along with ambient sound played through two amazing speakers provided by PSO uber mensch, Mark Menjivar. Sounds and sites from Spiral Jetty, are situated next to pebble cascades from Maine, and the sounds of fireworks on election eve of 2020 are pictured from the porch along with many more PSO pieces.Behind the framed images lies an array of images directly adhered to the wall which range in size from 8 by 10 to 40 by 60 inches. These images are pixel remixes of the framed photographs. The sound is collaged from the 9 audio pieces. As with all things PSO, everything comes from the original experience of the site itself. You can purchase the physical record through the links below:Porch Swing Orchestra Website: https://porchswingorchestra.org/PSO Exhibit at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery through June 22, 2024https://klausgallery.com/exhibition/barry-stone-porch-swing-orchestra-2024-05-17/Barry Stone: Porch Swing Orchestra physical record is available athttps://klausgallery.com/product/barry-stone-porch-swing-orchestra-2024/Porch Swing Orchestra digital files are available on Bandcamp https://sunsetcommission.bandcamp.com/ Get full access to Porch Swing Orchestra at porchswingorchestra.substack.com/subscribe

The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark. Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Jim Nova, 2nd trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra About Jim Nova James Nova joined the Grammy award-winning Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2009 as second/utility trombone. In 2012, Nova made his solo debut with the PSO, performing Henri Tomasi's Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. Prior to that, he was a member of the Utah Symphony Orchestra where he served eight seasons as assistant principal/second trombone. Since 2012, James Nova has found a new passion in multitrack recording, also known as "overdubbing." Overdubbing is a process by which a musician records all the parts of a piece of music one by one and layers the recordings on top of each other to create a full ensemble. Nova has released dozens of stunning and virtuosic tracks of his own challenging arrangements of exciting repertoire for trombone choir. The arrangements employ many different trombones: contra bass, bass, tenor, small tenor, alto, and even soprano trombones! James Nova has had a lifelong love of John Williams' film scores and in December of 2017, he released a new overdub album for trombone choir, A Fall from Light to Dark. Through the chosen moments of John Williams' masterful scores, this album musically chronicles the rise and descent of Anakin Skywalker as he transforms into Darth Vader. Truly a one-man show, this album's transcriptions, playing, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering were all done by Nova himself. James Nova has always been passionate about music education. When not on stage at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Symphony, he can be found at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University where he is adjunct trombone faculty, as well as the brass coach of the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras. Given their widespread popularity, Nova's recordings are playing an impactful role in inspiring the next generation of musicians and budding recording artists and he is frequently invited to teach outside the region. Since 2012, he has completed more than 85 visits to prominent festivals (such as the International Trombone Festival, American Trombone Workshop, and the Korea Trombone Festival, among others) and reputable educational institutions (such as the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School of Music, and New England Conservatory, among others) as the featured artist and educator in concerts, masterclasses, and clinics. James Nova studied with Glenn Dodson at the Curtis Institute of Music followed by study with Norman Bolter at the New England Conservatory of Music. While in Boston, Nova played regularly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra, including recordings and television broadcasts as both principal and second trombone. James Nova is an S.E. Shires Artist and performs on his signature line of Greg Black Mouthpieces. For more info, visit jimnova.com or hear his recordings at soundcloud.com/jimnova
The Agitator boys have opposing thoughts on DUNE. Instead of going to war over some art that someone else made, we explore the nature of taste and why we vibe with or hate certain movies. We also have beef with Gerber for putting lead in baby snacks and with PSO for being a terrible energy company. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Niharika NandaIt's the 13th of March and here are the top stories of the day.Former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday resigned from the Karnal assembly seat in the House, vacating it for the new CM Nayab Saini.During the assembly, he said, quote “Although I'm the MLA from Karnal while Nayab Saini has yet not contested the assembly elections… he also has to contest polls.” “So, I announce in this House today that I resign from Karnal Vidhan Sabha seat…Now, Nayab Saini shall take care of Karnal constituency…” unquote. As for himself, talking about responsibilities, Khattar said, he will fullfil whatever responsibility is handed to him to the best of his abilities. President Droupadi Murmu has approved Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code Bill, the government in the Himalayan state said on Wednesday. In February the Bill, which seeks to “govern and regulate the laws related to marriage and divorce, successions, live-in relationships and matters related thereto”, was passed by the Assembly following a two-day discussion. After the Bill was passed, the state government formed a Rules Making and Implementation Committee headed by retired IAS officer and UCC draft committee member Shatrughan Singh. While the Bill only defines the provisions and sections of the UCC, rules made by the committee will define in detail how the sections will be implemented.Chandigarh Mayor Kuldeep Kumar today claimed that Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Banwarilal Purohit and BJP MP Kirron Kher misbehaved with him. While addressing media persons along with Congress party in-charge and President H S Lucky, Kumar said, “I felt bad when Kher got the mic sanitised after my address”. He also referred to Purohit's comments that a supply of free water to the residents wasn't possible and that they should have thought before speaking and making promises.Reacting to the Chandigarh mayor's allegations, Kirron Kher told The Indian Express, that a completely innocent act is being politicised, and that her PSO santises the mic whenever she is not wearing a mask. The National Investigation Agency on Wednesday detained a man from Ballari who is alleged to have interacted with the main suspect involved in the blast at The Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru on the night of March 1, around eight hours after the explosion, as the main suspect escaped from the Karnataka capital.Identified as Syed Shabbir, police sources said his association with the main suspect in the cafe blast case is yet to be ascertained and that he was detained based on technical analysis.Senior Congress leader Padmakar Valvi from Maharashtra joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mumbai today, marking a significant loss for the Congress in the state. Valvi, a three-time MLA from Nandurbar, was known for his popularity in the tribal-dominated district. He had previously served as the sports minister of the state and was a prominent figure in north Maharashtra. His shift comes amidst Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Maharashtra. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

She earned an MFA from Bard College and is an Associate Professor in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University. Mallios is a founding member of the Lakes Were Rivers artist collective in Austin, TX. Her work consists of photography, video, and installation exploring the physicality of light and space. Central to her practice are visibility, invisibility, temporal shifts, scale distortions, and destabilized materiality. Informed by the history of optical media and the evolving viewing apparatus, her research-based approach responds to sites and structures of cultural and architectural significance.I have known Jessica for many years, as a friend, colleague at Texas State, collaborator, and artist. When I first moved back to Texas Jessica was part of the extremely talented photographers I met living around Austin. We formed a crit club that eventually became the Collective Lakes Were Rivers..For our conversation, we keep it current focusing on Mallios' work for the PSO's Vast is the Sea Series. We talk about solar winds, Lighthouse keepers, Iceland, Observation towers, in Dubai and London, all places Mallios has made and is currently making work in and about. We get into weeds about opticality, time, and the apparatus of the camera, but also about more down-to-earth subjects like motherhood, and the shared struggles of making work as a parent, educator, and an artist all in one. After our conversation, we will hear some audio excerpts, which encompass the inaudible, at least without the aid of the apparatus, Solar winds, and sounds from the mountains of Iceland.LINKS and REFERENCESPORCH SWING ORCHESTRAhttps://porchswingorchestra.org/Tickets to VAST IS THE SEA https://withfriends.co/event/17182339/vast_is_the_seaCO-LAB PROJECTShttps://www.co-labprojects.org/JESSICA MALLIOS' WEBSITEhttp://jessicamallios.com/VAST IS THE SEA is supported in part by grants from the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department, Texas Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, H-E-B, and Co-Lab Projects Members.
