A lot has happened since Kelly and I first met a million years ago in my Couch to 5k Club. She did the 5k and trained for her first marathon, when this happened. She went on the complete a marathon and then another one. She got married, moved to New Jersey, got on the cover of Runner's World magazine, had a movie made about her and was all set to run the Boston Marathon with her husband and her mom when covid hit. And as many of us did, she stopped running. But she's back and we talk about what's new, what's different as she is molting her old identity as Kelly Herron and into Kelly Lieberman. She's taking on the new challenge of training for a half marathon with no time goal to shoot for. We also talk about her role of being a bonus mom, and the parallels of running and staying sober. Kelly is really one of my most favorite humans and I always enjoy chatting with her, and giggling.
Kelly Herron, a marathon runner from Seattle, was brutally assaulted in a park bathroom while out on a run and has turned her experience into an inspiring, life changing project for people across the country. For Kelly, the attack wasn't a sign to stop what she was doing; it was a sign to keep going and not look back. Listen to her remarkable story and be inspired to not let fear stop you from doing what you love. The impact that Kelly is making on the running community makes her another example of an athlete doing good.

Jenny tells the story of Katie and Brian McConnell who were hostages in their own home. And Denel talks about Kelly Herron who had a scary encounter on a run.
Training for her first marathon 38-year-old Kelly Herron, would often find herself pounding the pavement after work. She lived in the Pacific Northwest in the US, which often meant that Kelly would be running in the dark, by herself. Sometimes she’d feel a flicker of fear. So when Kelly’s work offered a free self-defence class for all employees on Valentine’s Day 2017, she jumped at the chance. Peppering the instructor with questions, Kelly asked, as a runner, what she should do if she felt like she was being followed. The answer was simple: ‘Run!’ Terrifyingly, she was right. Three weeks later, on a freezing, wet afternoon, Kelly bundled up, popped on her headphones and set off for a 16km run along the beach. About halfway through her run, Kelly spotted a public bathroom and decided to quickly duck into the ladies. It was in that moment that her life changed forever. This is how Kelly Herron survived… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We would love to hear your thoughts on these stories. Go ahead and comment on Instagram and tell us what you think. Thanks for Listening!
In March of 2017 Kelly Herron was in the middle of a marathon training run. She stopped in the bathroom of Golden Gardens State Park in Seattle and was confronted by a man who'd been hiding in a stall waiting for a woman to attack. It took everything Kelly had to fight him off and lock him in the bathroom until police arrived. Over night Kelly became famous for the battlecry she'd screamed at him and for the courageous way she reacted. Kelly talks to us about the ways the attack challenged her sobriety, how EMDR therapy helped and a recent positive encounter she had with a first responder. In Clinican's Corner Dr. Anne Bisek explains what EMDR therapy is and how it acts as "windshield wipers for the brain."
Kelly Herron has basically made lemonade out of lemons. She had a traumatic, life-altering encounter, and made a choice to not let this event get the better of her. When out for a long run on a cold February day in Seattle, Kelly stopped at a public restroom where she was attacked by a registered sex offender who was hiding in a stall. She screamed, “Not Today Mother Fucker,” and this has become her battle cry and her company. She did everything she could to get out of this guy’s grip, managing to escape and then locking him in the bathroom until police arrived. She and her self-defense instructor are now offering courses through Fighting Chance Seattle. BTW – I’m going to include a photo of her Garmin GPS route in the show notes. This tracked her time during the attack. It’s absolutely crazy what she did to fend him off and, as she says in our conversation, you’ll do pretty much anything to save your life. I hope this conversation helps just one person down the road either by encouraging them to take a self-defense course or by giving them the confidence or bravery to fight off someone when they otherwise thought that maybe that wouldn’t be possible. With that, enjoy this conversation with Kelly Herron. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? "Not Today Motherf@#!er" was the battle cry Kelly Herron screamed on a Sunday afternoon when she experienced every runner's biggest nightmare - a mid-run assault. Using the skills she recently learned in a self-defense workshop offered at her workplace, she fought back against a transient sex offender who attacked her in a park bathroom, trapping him inside until police arrived. Her Instagram post showing the frantic GPS lines tracking the violent encounter went viral, inspiring women around the world to fight back - whether it be against assault or even against someone who is underestimating them. Kelly has been featured by Women’s Running Magazine among the 21 Women Transforming the World through Running, has partnered with Runner’s World Magazine to support survivors through merchandise sales, and has been a tv guest on shows such as Good Morning America, Inside Edition, and The Doctors. We're thrilled to release our second episode of what we are now calling “The BibRave Bonus Mile.” These are the “special edition” episodes of the podcast that we're launching after the amazing response we received after our Leadville episode. They will be longer-form and will dive deeper on issues (like safety) and experiences (like Leadville) with narration, interviews, and on-site reporting. This special edition is all about Safety, with the support of our partners at Aftershokz. We first hear from two runners who have experienced dangerous situations while on the run. The first is badass Kelly Herron who defeated an attacker mid-run. The second is a personal friend, Craig H., who broke his ankle on a dark winter run. We then take to the streets to hear a myriad of viewpoints on running and safety, and then end in-studio with Team BibRave for a few key takeaways. Interview With The Survivor Survivor. It is only one way to describe her. It is our absolute honor to include this interview with this survivor. This is part three in our series on predation. This interview with Kelly Herron will show the reality that a violent attack puts a person in. Let me be very clear. Kelly Herron is not lucky. She is a survivor and a fighter. Luck is when you look down and see a quarter on the ground. If not lucky, what then? She is a woman who has taken responsibility for her awareness and preparation. On Sunday March 5th, Kelly Herron was on a training run for an upcoming marathon. This was a Sunday afternoon, around 1 PM. A typical day in the park. Around mile four she stopped in a public restroom to use it and then wash her hands. When she turned around, she was face to face with convicted sex offender Gary Steiner. Steiner, 40, is classified by the Clark County Sheriff's office as a Transient Level III Sex Offender, or the level most likely to reoffend Steiner immediately shoved Kelly to the ground and got behind her. The fight for her life was on. From Momentary Confusion to Not Today Mother Fucker! As you listen to this interview, Kelly's fight will hit you hard. The reality of it and the incredible reaction to her situation. I do not need to rehash all of the details here in print. Her personal account is one of the most powerful stories that you will hear. Some of the things we cover in this interview: The absolute importance of awareness and being prepared Training what you know make a huge difference Your mindset goes a long way in keeping you alive Never give up Continuing the journey What does the future look like today I hope you enjoy this interview at least half as much as I enjoyed interviewing Kelly! Please let us know what you think ofd this episode by leaving us a review on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher Radio or wherever you listen to this podcast. Carrie interviews Kelly Herron, who was recently attacked in a women's restroom while out on her run in Seattle. Kelly recounts her journey and offers advice for runners to stay safe. Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Kelly Herron Kelly lives in Seattle, WA and found her passion for running in November 2015, about five months after she achieved sobriety from alcohol addiction. Kelly wants to promote the value of self-defense, especially to women and runners so that we can live life without fear of doing things that make us happy, like running! She works as an advisor at RealSelf.com. This summer Kelly will be running her first marathon, at the Seattle Rock N' Roll Marathon.
Runner Fights Off Attacker Four miles into a planned 10-mile run in Seattle's Golden Gardens park on Sunday, 36-year-old Kelly Herron stopped for what she thought would be a quick bathroom break. Source: A jogger's fitness tracker documented her brutal attack on a run | Fox News Runner fights off attacker is an understatement. Kelly Herron is a survivor. He war cry is "Not Today Motherfucker"! So much to say about her ordeal, but the first is well done lady! The picture above is her Instagram recount of the event. As always we link to the original article so you can read it for yourself. Her attacker is Gary Steiner who is described by Seattle Police as a 40 year old registered sex offender from Arizona. Steiner was waiting in the bathroom for what he thought would be his next obvious victim. This is where everything went wrong, for Steiner! What Went Right Ms. Herron recently trained in a self defense class that her workplace offered. She took initiative to get the training Ms. Herron decided not to be the helpless victim that day She fought back with everything she had in her Remembering her training she effectively used it to her advantage Herron beat the shit out of Steiner She locked him in the bathroom until the police arrived Ms. Herron did everything right that day. This is absolutely a best case scenario of a potentially bad encounter with a predator. I do not have any specifics on Steiner but he appears to be homeless. Also, he appears to have a slighter build than average. Let's Break This Down Some More The biggest point of success is Ms. Herron's mindset. Not only choosing to fight, she fought with ferocity. She understood what was at stake in the situation and chose to give it her all. Most rapists and attackers do not expect any resistance. Plenty of studies by law enforcement reveal that predators look for the most unaware and complacent target. They do not want to struggle or fight and will MOST OF THE TIME avoid this. This is not to say that a rapist won't try to harm or hurt their intended mark. Plenty will and do. We are saying that being willing to fight back raises your chance of survival by a lot. Again, great job Ms. Herron! Our Wish List If we have any constructive critiques, they are few. I'll broaden this beyond just Ms. Herron to any woman reading this.
