In this heartfelt and inspiring episode, I have a conversation with Danny O'Sullivan from Tralee, County Kerry. Danny shares the profoundly emotional experience of losing his wife, Alison, at just 37 years of age to a sudden and aggressive form of cancer just 10 weeks after diagnosis. Despite the heartbreak, Danny has channeled his energy into organising a significant charity cycle from Malin to Mizen Head, aiming to raise funds for the palliative care unit at University Hospital Kerry. This facility provided indispensable care to Alison and continues to support families during their most challenging times. Join me to hear about Danny's journey from his Gaelic football roots to embracing a triathlon lifestyle spurred by the COVID pandemic, and now using his passion for cycling to make a difference. The Mariners start a three-game series with the Blue Jays tonight - will we see less Toronto fans tonight? There are many reasons why it won't be like what we've seen in the past. The Mariners feel confident right now, and that's why even when they're down, they're not out. What if the original vision for the internet—a decentralized, permissionless, and open system—could still be realized? On this episode of The Index, host Alex Kehaya is joined by Danny O'Brien, Senior Fellow at the Filecoin Foundation, to explore how we got here—and how we can build something better.Danny's career spans decades at the frontlines of digital freedom, from the early days of the free software movement to today's push for decentralized infrastructure and open AI. He shares stories connecting the dots—from Bash shell's origins as free software (the same Bash running on the Mars helicopter) to the modern struggle against walled gardens and platform lock-in.Together, we unpack why centralized systems pose such a risk to innovation, how the ethos of “just build together” remains vital, and why open-source collaboration is more than a philosophy—it's the backbone of digital sovereignty. We also dive into the future of “open intelligence”: AI systems built on transparent, community-driven infrastructure. Danny argues this is the continuation of a 60-year project, where the tools we build reflect the freedoms we value. If you're a builder in Web3, an open-source contributor, or working at the intersection of AI and decentralized protocols, this conversation is for you.Let's dive in and rebuild the internet from first principles.Website: https://fil.org/Follow Danny O'Brien on XShow LinksThe Index X ChannelYouTube

Danny O'Connor was an honor roll student, a Massachusetts HS wrestling state champion, and a nationally ranked wrestler as a sophomore in high school. By his junior year, he was failing every class, dropped out of school, fell into substance abuse, experienced homelessness, and had 22 involvements with the criminal justice system before adult age. He was on a path destined for prison or death. In just two years two years after finding boxing, he became a two-time national amateur champion, ranked #1 in the U.S., and traveled the world as part of Team USA. He made the United States Olympic boxing team, turned professional, won 31 fights, and became the WBC International Champion. He was ranked in the top 5 in all major sanctioning bodies, managed and mentored by the Dropkick Murphys, and fought on HBO, Showtime Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports 1, and more. However, the hardest and longest battle he fought was not on a mat or in the ring but rather with his eating disorder. The very same discipline that led to his success also led to his demise taking away his dreams and almost his life. Danny shares his incredible story and struggles in hopes that others can learn from his mistakes and be inspired from his resilience. @therealdannyoconnor, www.doboxingacademy.com

It's 'stupid season' when it comes to reporting. Somehow the NFL figured out how to make everything a big deal. There is no way the Seahawks brought in Klint Kubiak without planning on making use of DK Metcalf. Gregg Bell, The News Tribune reacts to the new DK Metcalf rumors and tells us why there's not a lot of reason to trust what we're hearing and seeing right now. He sees DK Metcalf getting a very large contract from Seattle and thinks there's a minimal chance of the Seahawks moving him. While Gregg sees Schneider apt to trade back in the draft, he doesn't think they're trading out of the first round. The Daily Power Play! Danny O'Neil, The Dang Apostrophe! tells us his honest thoughts on what UW basketball is doing right now...or not doing. We delve into college hoops. Danny stands firmly in Ian Rapoport's camp through the 'beef' Jordan Schultz has with him. He spills the tea. Danny O'Neil, The Dang Apostrophe! Danny reacts to the Jorge Polanco signing and while he doesn't think the move hurts the Mariners, but they have to figure out how to get over the hump. Is it really breaking news that T-Mobile is a difficult park in which to hit? Finally, Danny reacts to Pete Carroll's hiring in Las Vegas. Pete Carroll has 170 wins, two conference championships and a Super Bowl. What makes a Hall of Fame coach? He thinks the Jaxon Dart hype is going to grow as we lead up to the draft. Steve evaluates the talent at each position he saw in Mobile. Crosstalk with Softy!
Ian had a panic moment this morning, but things are all ok now. Pete Carroll is back in the league with the Raiders and Ian contends he's at least a borderline hall of famer, only considering how difficult it is for coaches to get in these days. Ian sees him as a Bonafide HOFer. Danny O'Neil, The Dang Apostrophe! Danny was surprised by Pete Carroll's hiring in Las Vegas - not because he's back in the league, but where he ended up, as Chicago seemed like a more likely fit. It will be difficult for Pete to assemble a staff with so many of those in his coaching tree with current jobs. Who could be a target for him? Danny doesn't see Pete slowing down or changing his approach. Will Russell Wilson end up in Vegas? Finally, Danny gives his thoughts on Ichiro in the Hall of Fame. Ian, Anders and Jess thoughts on whether Pete Carroll will find success in Vegas. Stewart Mandel, The Athletic wraps up the college football season and starts with the College Football Playoff, which he deems a success for not only the 12 teams in it, but for college football as a whole. The NIL numbers are going to continue to rise and retention will become more and more difficult. Ichiro went into the Hall of Fame this week and we listen to the same story told about him from both a writer and player perspective. The Daily Power Play! Rob Rang, FOX Sports and BC Lions discusses the top of the NFL draft this year and how deep the offensive line class is this year.
