Send us a textJeff McMurtrie returns to our podcast with exciting news about his meticulously crafted wilderness maps that have transformed how paddlers experience Ontario's backcountry. Having spent over 700 days exploring these waterways, Jeff brings unparalleled expertise to his cartography – revealing hidden gems that most travelers miss and preventing potentially frustrating navigational errors. The newest additions to his collection include updated Killarney and French River maps with 50% more detail, innovative portage elevation profiles, and an extensive catalog of points of interest. Perhaps most exciting is the announcement of a refreshed Temagami map coming this summer and a new East French River map that completes the coverage from Georgian Bay to Lake Nipissing when combined with his other maps. What makes these maps special goes beyond their accuracy. Jeff's thoughtful design elements – like showing creek width proportional to reality and using distinctive "penciled in" styling for extremely challenging routes – reflect his deep understanding of what paddlers actually need on the water. The maps document everything from waterfalls and swimming holes to historic sites and spring water sources, creating what Jeff calls "that extra dimension" that transforms a good trip into an unforgettable one. Each physical map purchase includes digital versions in five different formats (high-resolution JPEG, Avenza Maps with GPS functionality, Garmin GPS, Google Earth 3D, and GeoTIFF), ensuring paddlers can use them however best suits their style. Jeff shares that user feedback has been invaluable in refining these resources – from identifying changed conditions to suggesting new features that improve usability.Whether you're planning your first backcountry trip or your fiftieth, these maps provide both essential navigation tools and unexpected discoveries. On this week's podcast, Kevin "Wild" Westendorf returns, and he and Bob catch up on what he's been doing since he was last on the podcast, including a brief review of his Garmin GPS watch and a comparison of it and his previous Apple watch. Then, they discuss the impacts the drastic federal budget cuts is having on our public lands, and also the collateral damage to the job market and local economies. Finally, Bob talks about a story in a local newspapers newsletter that quoted a Facebook post, which reported that an e-bike rider had to be rescued in the Texas desert after her e-bike battery went dead, and she then pushed the e-bike for twenty miles. As it turns out, other than a cyclist needing to be rescued from the Texas desert, most of the story is false. In an age where mis-information is rampant, Bob chastizes the newspaper and its newsletter for not doing basic fact-checking to ascertain the truth. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/584 Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/troutroutes In this episode, McKenna Hulslander takes us on an exhilarating journey through her most recent backcountry fly fishing trip, offering insider tips and thrilling stories from the wild. McKenna reveals how she combines technology, like the TroutRoutes app, with traditional angling wisdom to enhance safety, navigation, and fish finding on remote trips. Whether you're a seasoned angler or new to the sport, McKenna's insights on preparing for the unexpected, choosing the right gear, and conserving our precious aquatic ecosystems will inspire you to tackle your next fishing adventure with confidence and respect for nature. Join us as McKenna shares the highs and lows of her journey, from exhilarating catches to surviving a plane crash, all while showcasing the beauty and challenges of wilderness fishing. Episode Chapters with McKenna Hulslander on Backcountry Fly Fishing 1:22 - With a childhood rooted in the outdoor traditions of her family, McKenna was naturally drawn to the rivers and streams of northwest Montana. Her story is not just about fly fishing; it intertwines with her pursuits in athletics, notably college hockey. 8:06 - McKenna shares the inspiring journey behind her wilderness fly fishing trip in Montana, highlighting the unique blend of adventure, conservation, and education that fueled the expedition. With a desire to share this rich heritage and address the gap in backcountry knowledge among newcomers, she, alongside her videographer friend Riley, embarked on a mission to capture the essence of remote fly fishing through a documentary. The film, aimed for submission to the Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T), represents a heartfelt effort to bridge generations, celebrate the sport's traditions, and encourage responsible engagement with the natural world. 14:04 - She shares her enriching experience of meeting John Fraley, a respected writer and fisheries biologist known for his significant contributions to understanding bull trout and cutthroat trout in Montana. 15:05 - She describes the process of getting dropped off in the wilderness in Montana with just a car, her pack, and a packraft from Kokopelli, setting the stage for a multi-day journey of exploration and fishing. 22:35 - She offers valuable advice for planning remote hiking and fly fishing trips, emphasizing the importance of using tools like TroutRoutes for effective trip planning. She highlights how the mobile app not only provides detailed maps but also offers crucial information like water temperature and flow rates (CFS), which are vital for ensuring safety and successful fishing experiences. Additionally, McKenna mentions the importance of monitoring water conditions before the trip to make informed decisions about fishing times and conservation efforts, especially during warmer months. 25:38 - She discusses the focus on fishing for Westslope cutthroat trout and the occasional "cutbow" (a hybrid between a cutthroat and rainbow trout) during their wilderness trip in Montana. She highlights the importance of conservation, especially concerning the endangered bull trout, explaining their decision to avoid targeting this species to align with ethical fishing practices passed down through generations. 28:16 - McKenna dives into the essential and luxury gear that made her wilderness fishing adventure memorable. She emphasizes the importance of dry bags, highlighting how co-sponsors like Kokopelli and Filson provided high-quality dry bags crucial for keeping equipment dry and safe during the float trip. Essential gear also included a Garmin GPS for navigation and a knife from Montana Knife Company, emphasizing the importance of safety and preparedness in remote settings. As for luxury items, McKenna shares her fondness for bringing along Backpackers Pantry's crème brûlée and indulging in beer supplied by Sacred Water Brewing Company, naming the Catch 'Em Lager as her favorite for its thematic fit with fishing. 31:43 - During their multi-day wilderness trip, McKenna and her crew experienced a mix of weather conditions, including a notable thunderstorm on the first day which, despite its intensity, was something McKenna enjoyed while on the river. The storm added some water to the river, slightly raising its level, which turned out to be beneficial for their journey. McKenna also shares a learning moment from Mr. Fraley regarding the correct terminology for insect activity on the water, distinguishing between a "hatch" and an "emergence," with the latter referring to the phase when insects transition from water to air with wings. 34:36 - Fishing proved fruitful during their trip, with McKenna emphasizing the excitement of trying different flies, especially those that were guaranteed to be successful based on her experience. She hinted at the effectiveness of flies with rubbery legs and the color purple in attracting West Slope cutthroat trout, which are the primary species targeted. 36:56 - We dig into Outcast Adventures which focuses on organizing women's trips into the wilderness, aimed at groups of 12 to 14 participants. These trips are designed not only to introduce women to fly fishing, camping, and floating in the backcountry but also to foster deep connections among people from diverse backgrounds. McKenna emphasizes that no prior experience in fly fishing is necessary to join, opening the door for participants with varied levels of experience. 41:34 - Key takeaways for anyone considering a similar trip include the significance of understanding the destination, planning for unforeseen events, and maintaining a detailed timeline for the journey. This timeline is crucial not only for managing supplies like food but also for ensuring the safety of everyone involved by keeping those at home informed of the expedition's progress. For emergency situations, such as potential injuries, McKenna highlights the value of carrying a Garmin device. This piece of equipment offers peace of mind by enabling communication with people outside the immediate area, even in locations without cell service. 42:56 - McKenna shares a remarkable story of surviving a plane crash while on a wilderness trip with her family, including her brother, dad, and one of her brother's friends from the Air Force Academy. Despite the severity of the crash, McKenna recalls the experience with a sense of adventure, comparing the anticipation of the crash to the excitement of sliding down stairs on a sleeping bag as a child. 51:49 - From a young age, McKenna was deeply involved in hockey, despite growing up in Montana where the sport was uncommon. Her passion for hockey led her to play on a Canadian boys' team and later for a team affiliated with the St. Louis Blues organization. Pursuing her dream, she traveled extensively during high school to play in college, highlighting the growth of hockey in Montana and its contrast to the hockey culture in Minnesota. Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Monday September 12th 2022. We have a list of talking points each time and never get through them! Topics discussed Places visited: Lake District, England Loch Lomond, Scotland Stockbridge, Edinburgh Water of Leith, Edinburgh Death of Queen Elizabeth Died September 8th 2022 at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, aged 96 State funeral 2022-09-19 Navigation by phone: Dave's phone battery out of charge on the outskirts of Liverpool on the way to OggCamp. MrX's old Garmin GPS used weird routes when travelling Dave once met a lost driver going down Donkey Lane1 to the pedestrian railway crossing due to bad GPS directions Domestic stuff: Dave's house has been painted. It's covered in harling (aka rough-cast or pebble-dash in England) which has very sharp stones embedded in it, and this paint covers these sharp stones. Plumbing issues: stopping a dripping tap, replacing the washer, or with modern taps the module. Advisability of calling in a plumber! COVID-19, and related: The virus has not gone, even though there are many who pretend that it has. MrX and MrsX visited St Bees for a wedding with a Cèilidh and MrX caught COVID there, though it wasn't serious. MrsX did not catch it! Immunology is hard to understand! Some cold-like illnesses may be caused by other corona viruses and may help protect against SARS-CoV-2. Dave has an Immunology book, but hasn't read it yet! See the links for details. MrX mentioned Richard J Murphy in the context of being realistic about COVID-19 and continuing to take precautions. Reluctance to go shopping. Dave makes a weekly trip, wearing a mask. MrX uses Click and Collect. Dave has lost weight so some of his clothes are too big. MrX has trouble finding smaller sized clothes when shopping. Old technology: MrX recently found a box in his wardrobe with six Psion 3c Organisers in it, in various states of disrepair. From these a functioning organiser was made, which is in regular use. MrX used to have a Psion Series 3a but the hinge failed. Dave had a Psion Series 5mx for a time, as did MrsX. Dave's failed either because of a screen fault or a failure of the ribbon cable connecting to the screen. The Series 3c, and the later 3mx, have an Easter Egg available through a particular key sequence. This is a rendition of the anthem “Jerusalem”, and is included at the end of this episode (and is responsible for the show title). Dave had had a Psion Organiser II at work in the early days of organisers, but it was not particularly useful. MrX had an Atari Portfolio. He describes it as: a dreadful machine running DOS 2.11 It regularly crashed, losing all its memory. I decided to ditch it after having to type out my contacts list every time it crashed. MrX also had a Nokia N810, an Internet Tablet running Linux. Dave couldn't quite remember at the time of recording, but he bought a used Nokia 770 on eBay, which was the predecessor of the N810. This was also a Linux-based system, but it didn't last more than a couple of weeks sadly. Both bought - and still have - the ASUS Eee PC. Dave's is the 1005HA model. MrX still uses his from time to time Dave is thinking about installing a BSD flavour on his, but doesn't use it often. It currently has CrunchBang installed. Telegram: Dave runs it on his desktop (and laptop) as well as two phones. The phones run KDE Connect and are configured to tell the desktop when a message arrives! HPR New Year show: HonkeyMagoo (of the Linux LUGCast podcast) does a lot of the work with the recording in conjunction with Ken. He divides up the audio into shows, and in past years has prepared show notes. This year a LUGCast listener HPLovecraft did the notes, and they are very good! Postscript MrX found the Easter Egg, mentioned during our chat, on his Psion Series 3C, recorded it via Audacity, and sent me the resulting Easter Ogg! It has been appended to the main recording. Links Various Wikipedia links: Lake District, England Loch Lomond, Scotland Stock Bridge, Edinburgh Water of Leith, Edinburgh Death of Queen Elizabeth St Bees on the coast of Cumbria, England Harling wall covering (aka rough-cast) Cèilidh, a traditional Scottish social gathering Book: How the Immune System Works, Lauren Sompayrac, ISBN 9781119542124 Richard J Murphy Item mentioned in the blog Organisers (all Wikipedia links): Psion Organiser II Psion 3a Organiser Psion 3c Organiser Psion Series 5 Atari Portfolio Nokia N810 Nokia 770 ASUS Eee PC Instant Messaging: Telegram Owned by a Russian billionaire. As we wrap up the 8 Systems Framework series it is worthwhile to point out that this final system is both external and internal. I include it in the 8 Systems Framework because it is impossible to separate yourself from or ignore the driving conditions completely. Additionally, for the most part, you have very little, if any, control over the driving conditions. With that said you must be aware of what they are and how they affect your vehicle and the journey so that you don't end up in an accident or breakdown due to unsafe or undesirable conditions. I've alluded to driving conditions in other examples throughout this series. The first one I shared with you during System 1 when I shared the example of my teenage daughter and the Transmission Control Unit that was the underlying cause of many malfunctions in the electrical system of her vehicle. The car had been driven at high speeds drifting, burning the rubber off of the tires, and creating an extreme vibration in the car. We were aware of the damage done to the tires, brakes, and alignment but not to the electrical system. This was an example of driving conditions that were outside of the car's capacity but completely avoidable. I also shared in System 6 the need for my reliance on the Garmin GPS system as I navigated through an unexpected spring snowstorm with my young children completely unprepared for the conditions both for the car and for the passengers. I was focused on getting the little kids packed and ready for the 6 hour road trip and planning on meeting up with my oldest daughter and her high school tennis team at the tournament the next day. I had only checked the weather at home and at our destination for packing purposes. I had no thought given to the road other than the route as it was unfamiliar to me. This was an example of driving conditions that were unavoidable at the time, but fortunately for me, I was more prepared than I realized. Driving conditions in a vehicle are everything from traffic to weather, overdue maintenance, and fuel levels. Traffic and weather you have little to no control over. Maintenance and fuel you have control over if you have the knowledge of what to do and when and you plan accordingly. How you respond to these conditions is the result of your beliefs and experience. Do you avoid heavy traffic, night driving, and inclement weather or keep on trucking? Do you top your tank off frequently or run on empty? Do you rotate your tires every 3,000 miles or when they have to be replaced? Do you run premium gas and oil or get by with the cheapest option to keep you on the road? The metaphor of the driving conditions directly ties to the lifestyle choices we make and the SAD culture we live in. The societal norms, cultural beliefs, political and economic conditions are largely outside of our control much like weather and traffic. Learning how to optimize your body's health and performance with lifestyle choices is completely within your control if you have the knowledge of what to do and when and then you plan accordingly. Also like the driving conditions, the circumstances around us are continually changing. Some you may be able to plan for and some will come out of nowhere completely derailing your journey. Living WOW was created as a framework for lifestyle awareness, education, and resources to optimize health and vitality recognizing that we live in a SAD environment, much of which we have no control over. You do have complete control over how you respond and prepare for the circumstances around you. There may be times when you are blindsided with a diagnosis but know that as you learn to listen and understand the language of your body and become the expert in your body you will recognize how all 8 systems work individually yet intextricably together. I spoke briefly of the navigation system during the introduction of the Driver of System 5. Remember that the driver does what it is told with the purpose of getting you to your destination safely. But how do you know where to go? Your navigation system! Of course, you will see navigation helps all along the journey. This may be in the form of signs, maps, or even other drivers giving you information that was useful to them. What is unique and personal to you, however, is your personal navigation system. Your navigation system is beyond high-tech! Your navigation system knows not only where you are going but also all of the side roads, detours, and re-routes that you may need to encounter on your journey. It is critical that the driver tunes in to the navigation system because it can easily be drowned out by the noise of the journey and the driving conditions. Every time I think of this system I reflect back to when I first learned to TRUST my navigation system. I was on a quick weekend trip to watch my oldest daughter play tennis in a community 6 hours from our home. I was somewhat familiar with the route but had not driven the road before. It was spring so I packed accordingly for myself and my other 2 children, ages infant and 11 years, for our fun weekend getaway. We left after my son got out of school but most of the drive would still be in the dark. I had my reliable atlas with me because I wasn't completely sure of the route details and I always made sure I had it with me for road trips. My husband had bought a Garmin GPS and thought this would be a great opportunity to use it. We had played with it a little around town with lots of “rerouting” and buffering and funny pronunciations of some local roads. This new technology was mostly entertainment at this point but a road trip was the perfect opportunity to give it a go. So I set my hotel address as the destination in my GPS, kissed my husband goodbye, buckled up the kids, and off we went! Everything went as planned until we were about 2 hours away from home, darkness had set in, and as we started into the mountain pass we were greeted by an unexpected snowfall. Initially, I talked to the kids about the snow and how it was not in the forecast. It was dark so we really couldn't see the beauty of it and the kids fell asleep. I had not prepared for snow. I had only considered the weather at home and the weather for the tennis tournament. What I thought was a spring flurry became a white-out. Zero visibility. On a mountain road that I was unfamiliar with I was beginning to get nervous. If we ran off the road we were not prepared for these conditions. If I pulled off the road it would be just as dangerous potentially causing an accident because there was no shoulder and no visibility. I then begin to realize that not only did I have zero visibility, but the signs were completely covered with snow. They offered me no anchor as to where I was, how much farther I had to go to get to civilization, or what kind of help may be ahead. After what felt like an eternity, I heard a somewhat familiar voice tell me to turn left in 10 miles. That was when I realized that my GPS was still navigating and could “see” through the storm what I could not. It had been quiet for hours because there was nothing to tell me as we navigated over the pass with no turns or stops required. I started watching the map on my GPS to give me information about where I was on my journey, when I would be able to stop and get gas, and what my ETA was. Despite being on a mountain pass with no cell phone coverage, the GPS navigation system worked! For more information go to https://livingwowcenter.com/

Going overseas, heading off-grid, birdseye, and transferring .gpx files onto a Garmin GPS watch. In this month's podcast As many of us are venturing overseas again we look at - Overseas mapping - Official or TOPO Active/ OSMWe then will discuss going off grid – and using the - inReach mini/ inReach mini 2 We discuss the - End or Garmin's Birdseye VouchersWe will look at some training videos we have put together for those wanting to do a long-distance trail, whilst using a Garmin watch, either an Instinct or Fenix, to navigate with – Concentrating on the planning process you will need to go through. And then finally we have - Andy's top tips So, without a further a do let's get on with this month's GPS Training Podcast 1. Overseas mappingIt's nice to be back on this subject after the last two years – Garmin unitsOSM – Open Street/ Open-sourced maps – £19.99 - £29.99- Very much like Garmin's Topo Active maps - more here about TOPO ACTIVE maps v OS maps - Great if overlaying a .gpx file, as walking a long-distance trail etc Official maps - £73.99 - £138.99 - Garmin's ‘official' maps for each of the countries - We usually get then in around 7 – 14 days SatMap units – we are currently struggling to get overseas maps, but hopefully we will get a solution to this in the next few weeks, fingers crossed. To find out more about the new GPS Store > Maps 2. Going off grid – and using the - inReach mini/ inReach mini 2 What are the inReach mini's Not just a SOS button Already got a GPS device unit – what benefits does the inReach mini it give you To find out more about the range of Garmin inReach mini devices please go to our website – GPSTraining.co.uk > GPS Store and then – Two-way satellite communication 3. The next thing on this month's GPS Training Podcast - End or Garmin's Birdseye Vouchers 4. The next thing we are going to look at on this months Podcast is how we can plan a long-distance walk and get the info onto your GPS watch This subject and solution has come about after plenty of discussions in the GPS training office. The problem, if you are walking a long distance trail and you want to download a .gpx file and edit it into your day sections what's the best way to do this. What is a .gpx file? If you are using a handheld unit with OS maps how would you do this? Why can't you do this if you are a watch user? 1.5 hours to load the Fenix TOPO Active maps in BaseCampCan't edit in the online version of ConnectCan't edit in the online version of Explore So, the solution – BaseCamp with open-sourced maps on Export .gpx file into Connect To find out more and see the solution we have created some videos in the online resource – our online training platform. Please just go to gpstraining.co.uk > Click on Online resource, on the top menu bar. When you are on the online resource click on – Courses > GPX Library 5. 2021 Garmin Map Card, Spine Race, what have they done to the OS app, more units discontinued and ask Ian. In this month's podcast A quick update on the 2021 OS map cards from GarminSpine race – well done to all our customers who have taken part in this event. After we sung the praises of the OS app in a recent Podcast, in their wisdom they managed to undo any good work they had done just a few weeks later. We look at what they have done.Yet more units discontinued by Garmin, we look at a year where Garmin have certainly cleared the stable out.Stock availability – sorry I know it is a recurring theme, but a quick update on stock issuesAsk Ian – the questions you have been asking Ian over the past month The first thing on this month's Podcast is a look at the recent update on the Garmin 1:50k map card Last month we discussed that Garmin, after a very long wait, updated the 1:25k map cardIn the past month we also received and update of the 1:50k TOPO Great Britain PRO 1:50k map cardSo both map cards are now V2OS release ¼ of the country every year as a map update so cards get updated every 4 years but for some reason the 1:50k map card has been updated after 3 years. What changes on OS maps? You can buy the new map card as a standalone product on GPS Training and all new Garmin GPS unit bundles are now being shipped with updated map cards, unlike some other retailers The next thing on this month's GPS training podcast is a look back at the Spine race – well done to all our customers who have taken part in this event. The Montane Spine Race is widely regarded as one of the world's toughest endurance races. There are both summer and winter events and the summer event started on Saturday 19th June. In our 31st episode, we interviewed Paul Freeman after he completed the Spine Challenger race.A truly epic challenge that will test your physical resilience and mental fortitude. Racing non-stop along the Pennine Way – 268 miles There are ‘shorter' races within the main race but all are true challenges. As I spoke about this in last month's Podcasts many people are introduces to GPS units for the first time with an event like this. We have had a number of customers participating in the event and well done to all those who took part. Before they start the Spine Race they have to demonstrate they can get their current Grid reference from their GPS unit. So, Ian how would people do this – Satellite pageCreate waypoint of your current location If you want to find more about the Spine race please just go to their website – thespinerace.comThe next thing on this month's podcast is the recent updates to the OS app. After Ian sung the praises of the OS app in a recent Podcast, in their wisdom OS managed to undo any good work they had done just a few weeks later. So Ian, what have they done? Basically, when you plan a route on the app, it exports as a track in to Garmin Explore unlike all the other apps you can use….. I am slowly working on the OS. They have now admitted that they have trashed it for the time being and accept it needs to be altered back to what it was prior their three app updates in March. That still hasn't been done. As we do have, I think, quite a few customers who use this app, it may be worth talking about it/other options that work? The next thing on the GPS Training Podcast is the end of the road for the Garmin Oregon 750 Another one bights the dust – This year we have seen the A number of units ‘discontinued' – Touch 25t, we still have the 35tGPSMAP 64sx and GPSMAP 66stMontana 610, 680 and 680tThen the Oregon 750tAnd then this week we saw the Garmin Oregon 750 be discontinued. Don't work both ourselves and Garmin will continue to support these units for many years to come.Stock availability – sorry I know it is a recurring theme, but a quick update on stock issues Currently out of stock of GPSMAP 66sr, Montana 700i Shortage of ‘chips'

Andy is back! This month we have Andy, who was the co-host for the first 18 episodes of the GPS Training Podcast back with us. In this month's podcast we – We chat with Andy how he is using a Garmin watch for lots of varied activities, cycling, running, walking and also how you use Garmin devices as a family.Ian's FAQ, the frequently asked question Ian gets asked whilst supporting our customers. The next thing on this month's Podcast is Ian's FAQ's, the frequently asked question he gets asked whilst supporting our customers. It has become apparent over the last few weeks that one or two of our customers are going in to the Internal Storage of their Garmin or Satmap GPS and altering/adding/deleting various files and folders or using their micro SD map cards to store all sorts of things on them. Please don't do it. I can only think of these times when it would be appropriate to do so. Garmin Corrupt gpx file – the link for the instructions is here Deleting FIT files – the link for the instructions is here Backing up Birdseye mapping – the link for the instructions is here Satmap With a new Active 20, sometimes the Route folder doesn't initially appear and needs to be created. In this instance Mac Finder/Windows File Explorer>double click Satmap internal folder>right click in the space>New>Folder>ROUTESDisconnect the Active 20>power button>Main Menu screen>Folders>Internal Storage>Refresh>the folder should then appear Wearables Deleting FIT files – this is exactly the same as for that for a GPS Courses – these can't be deleted via Basecamp.
