Send me a messageIn this episode of Inside The Mix, mastering engineer Ian Shepherd demystifies loudness metrics and debunks common mastering misconceptions while offering practical advice for producers looking to improve their masters without chasing arbitrary targets. Ian explains the role of LUFS in mastering, why normalization matters, and how focusing on musicality and dynamics leads to better results than simply hitting a loudness target. What You'll Learn: • LUFS measurements explained – momentary, short-term, and integrated loudness • How many LUFS should my master be? Understanding the balance between dynamics and loudness • The truth about LUFS for Spotify – why 83% of users never change loudness normalization settings • What does LUFS stand for? And why it's just one piece of the mastering puzzle • How normalization impacts your music across different streaming platforms • The role of audio normalization in creating a consistent listening experience • Why AI mastering struggles to match the emotional intent of human engineers • Spotify's approach to loudness and what it means for your masters • Internal dynamics – how balancing different sections of your song enhances clarity and impact • The mastering feedback loop – why collaboration between engineers and artists is keyIf you want your music to stand out in today's Spotify-dominated landscape, don't obsess over loudness numbers. Instead, focus on musicality, dynamics, and emotional impact. Test how your tracks sound at normalized streaming levels, and let the music, not the meters, drive your mastering decisions.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to the Mastering Show PodcastMastering Engineer Reacts to 8 Pro Mixes of the Same SongHigher LUFS - do they REALLY always sound louder?YouTube ruined all my videos - UNLESS you disable this setting...Loudness Penalty: AnalyzePerception AB Support the showBook a FREE 20-minute Producer Potential Discovery Call Follow Marc Matthews' Socials:Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!!

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kendi-yoluna-giden-adam/message

This week we're tackling a topic that affects millions worldwide, yet is often shrouded in stigma and misunderstanding: Binge Eating Disorder (BED). I am so excited to be bringing this episode to you, as we have not discussed the topic of binge eating yet on my podcast. And to help shed some light on the subject, I have with me Dr. Siobhan Key, an obesity medicine physician, certified weight loss coach, and an expert in emotional binge eating. Dr. Key was very open in our interview about her own journey with BED, and she was able to share with me so much of her knowledge on the subject from both a personal and medical standpoint. We talk a lot about the shame and stigma that often accompanies binge eating and restriction, and how healing it can be to find resources and support to help address this disorder. I hope you take something valuable away from this week's episode, and if you struggle with binge eating disorder, please talk to your doctor or find a physician in your area that specializes in eating disorders. When your house is affected by flood damage, there are certain steps you need to take in order to ensure that you get it repaired properly and in a timely manner. Here are a few tips to help you with this.Documentation is keyIf you are a homeowner, you should know that it is important to document any damage. This will help you make a claim, if needed. You will need to gather a variety of documents. This can include pictures, videos, and documents of any damaged items. It is also essential to keep important insurance papers in a safe place. Ideally, you will want to store them at a secure location, such as a bank safe deposit box. When you are dealing with water damage, it is important to document as much as possible. Photographs can be used to show the extent of the damage. The interior and exterior of your home should be documented. Photos should be taken at close-up, as well as from different angles.Another important step to take is to make a list of all the contents of your home. This list should include the purchase date of all items. Take pictures of any flooded rooms as well as any items that were in the room. Taking measurements is helpful as well.Remove damaged itemsThere are a number of things you can do to make your home look better after a flood, and one of the first things you should do is remove damaged items. These items include your furniture, your clothes and other items that have been affected by the water. Aside from the fact that your possessions will need to be cleaned, you'll also have to replace the damaged materials. This is especially true for items that are porous, as they will soak up the moisture. Please use Service Restoration to improve your flood damage restoration in Orono. Some things you might be able to salvage from a flood are your carpets, insulation and some particle board furniture. However, these items are often accompanied by health hazards and should be treated with the utmost caution. If you have to make do with only a few items, you might have to hire professionals to help you out. Before you can begin any repair work, you'll need to take pictures of the damaged items, and make a video. You'll also want to register your loss with your insurance agent.Dry out the affected areasWhen you have flood damage, it is important to dry out the affected areas of your home as soon as possible. However, the process can take weeks to achieve, especially if you're dealing with a large area. Here are a few tips to get you on your way.The first thing you should do after a water spill is to drain the water out of your home. This is an important step because it will help remove any remaining moisture from the wood and plaster. You should also make sure that the extension cords are disconnected from the water source as well. Leaving the cords exposed can cause further damage. For larger areas, you may need to invest in a portable dehumidifier to remove the water from the air. A wet/dry shop vacuum can also be used to extract any remaining standing water.Sanitize the areaFloods can leave behind dirt, mud, and other harmful contaminants. These should be cleaned as soon as possible. This will help prevent mold and other hazards from spreading. Service Restoration is one of the best flood damage cleanup in Minnesota called Service Restoration Orono. When cleaning a contaminated area, wear protective gear and remove items that cannot be easily washed. You should also make sure to disinfect all surfaces. Use a 10% bleach solution and apply it to the affected areas. Don't use excessive amounts of bleach. Ensure that the area is adequately dried to prevent mold. If you are not familiar with the proper clean up methods, contact your local health district or the EPA.After 24 hours, disinfect the area. A 10% bleach solution can be applied with a sprayer or sponge. Using a chemical sanitizer on salvageable surfaces is also a good idea.Service Restoration Inc. is a professional flood damage repair service provider. In this sustainable-tourism-themed lesson series you find visual and structural support for Levantine Arabic at an advanced level. We are very much into alternative tourism in Jordan because it is widely available and we love to support our local economy. Don't forget the worksheet: https://bit.ly/The-Arabic-We-Speak-Advanced-SustainableTourism-Lesson08 This lesson series is for advanced level learners and focuses on listening comprehension and vocabulary development. In this lesson series you find ten recorded texts that are visually and structurally supported to help you engage with tourism-related subtopics. The English texts are not literal translations, but there to help you with cultural and conceptual understanding of the original Arabic texts. At this level, you would want to try to avoid them as much as possible and only fall back on them if absolutely necessary; this way you immerse yourself with spoken Levantine Arabic and push your second language acquisition into a higher gear. Kindly note that all the learning materials are free and available for you to download and copy for educational use only. You may meet many different kinds of figures of speech in Arabic. We usually think of a figure of speech as being a comparison between two things which are not usually connected with each other, so that the characteristics of the one are carried over to the other. In Levantine Arabic, for example, people tend to compare a handsome man or a beautiful woman to the moon, so that the ethereal qualities of the moon (soft radiance, dreamy mood) are carried over to the person. Everyday Arabic is full of these kinds of figures of speech. When students listen to pop songs in Arabic, browse websites in Arabic or watch movies in Arabic they frequently meet language rich in its use of figures of speech. Yet figures of speech are often rather neglected in the classroom. For this reason, we have decided to delve into the world of Arabic figures of speech we hear and use in order to share them with you. Fixed linguistic expressions vary widely cross-culturally but many conceptual phrases appear to be potentially universal or near-universal. Figures of speech are grounded in human experience and exploring them allows us to explore that space. We encourage you to listen, pause the audio when you have heard the phrases to jot down your own interpretations and then continue listening to our explanation and given contexts in which figures of speech phrases are applicable. The pausing bit is very important for retention. Now, if you were our students we would not bother you with meta-(teaching)-words like retention. We would pause the audio and make you write stuff down. But here it is, the boring but very important science behind teaching practice! Pause and think: this is for retention. The learning aims for this series are to develop learners' awareness of figurative language, to give practice of recognising and analysing figurative language and to develop learners' confidence in using figurative language. Here is the worksheet: https://bit.ly/The-Arabic-We-Speak-FiguresOfSpeech-Compliments-Lesson5 Kindly note that all the learning materials are free and available for you to download and copy for educational use only. The most powerful dad is not a dad who can break things or hurt people. The super power that every dad can have that will make the most difference in his kids lives is the ability to listen. True listening is a full contact sport. However there are some truths you have to understand:The 2-1 ratio Listening is active Questions are key The 2-1 RatioYou must listen twice as much as you talk One of the biggest keys to any relationship is listening A man who listens learns how to control himself and to focus his responses A man who listens to his kids earns their love and their ability to hear him When you listen to your kids as a dad, you are showing respect and love Listening is ActiveListening doesn't just mean acknowledging they have spoken Listening is not only hearing but also responding This is so important for parents to do with their kids because it helps them learn how to critically think You can condescend and make them feel stupid or you can be sincere and teach them to think critically Your listening must be active or it won't have any meaning Questions are KeyIf you want to be a better listener, you must get better at questions Questions are also a way of communication Develop a curious mindset and apply it to your Kids You must be a student of each child to have good questions because each one is different One of the best ways to improve your relationship with your kids is to ask better questions If you want to be a powerful dad, learn to listen. Doing this will expand your relationship with your kids in exponential ways. The learning aims for this series are to develop learners' awareness of figurative language, to give practice of recognising and analysing figurative language and to develop learners' confidence in using figurative language.
