**Disclaimer that this episode mentions suicide in connection to LGBTQ youth. If you are not in a place to listen right now, you might want to skip this one. If you are, though, we really encourage you to listen on this tough but important topic that impacts so many in our community.**In this conversation, Dr. Jordon and Liz Sharp from St. George, Utah, shared their remarkable and inspiring story of moving from trauma, confusion, and loss to miracles, enlightenment, and strength as an LDS/LGBTQ family. Several years ago—even before they had thought much about this themselves—a tragic event with some family friends resulted in Liz and Jordon receiving strong promptings that God has a deep and abiding love for LGBTQ individuals and wants them to thrive. Jordon (Vice President of Marketing & Communication at Utah Tech University) and Liz (a registered nurse) eloquently described the mistakes made, lessons learned, opportunities found, and how their family bonds expanded far beyond their expectations after their son Sam came out at the age of 14. Due to what he saw as a lack of resources and support in this space, Jordon eventually helped found the Gather Conference, the largest-ever Christ-centered conference for Latter-day Saint LGBTQ individuals and those who love them. To learn more about the Gather Conference and to find resources for LGBTQ/LDS families, visit liftandlove.org.Liz and Jordon's family story is near and dear to our hearts at Faith Matters. So often, we don't have answers to know how we all belong in the family of God; we only have our conviction that we do belong and a willingness to figure it out along the way. Our conversation with Liz and Jordon gets deep into their personal story, including their ongoing spiritual learning and efforts to build conversations about the LGBTQ experience in the Church. We found them to be incredible examples of how to plow into uncharted territory with humility and a simple trust in one fact — that we are all beloved children of God.

My friends Dr. Jordon and Liz Sharp (LDS parents of five children) join us from St George, Utah to share their story of hope and healing. Jordon (VP of Marketing at Utah Tech University) and Liz (Registered Hospice Nurse) share their unexpected journey as a traditional LDS family who experienced everything from trauma, confusion, and loss to miracles, enlightenment, and overwhelming joy as they became a LDS/LQBTQ family through their gay son Sam (who turns 18 in 2023 and is the oldest). Jordon and Liz start their experience when Jordon served as a Bishop to a closeted gay young woman in their ward who attempted suicide and they were the first-responders on the scene; but describe how this terrible situation helped them more fully understand our Heavenly Parents love for all their children. It's a powerful part of their story. Jordon and Liz then talk about the text they received years later from their then 13-year-old-son Sam letting them know he is gay. They intimately and powerfully share their roadmap of making mistakes, learning, loving, healing, and ultimately understanding this isn't a phase or mistake, but a unique, meaningful, and wonderful part of their lives. They talk about how Sam is thriving because of the love he feels from family and friends—and his great heart, maturity, and soul. They talk about how they wish every parent could have a Sam. It is a beautiful family love story. Jordon and Liz shared their thoughts in a viral Facebook post (see show notes for link) about Sam, our LGBTQ brothers and sisters, and what we can do to be better. It's a beautiful Facebook post that I encourage us as a Latter-day Saint community to read and discuss how we can do better. Thank you, Jordon and Liz, for being on the podcast. I was deeply moved listening to you—it is a sacred place to hear your story. I encourage everyone to listen to and share this podcast. Their story helps better Gather Israel and create Zion. In this episode of Beyond Networth Podcast, we have Dr. Chris Brown, an assistant professor at Utah Tech University and CEO of Elevate Practices. Listen in as he shares why he is in education and his insights on what and how education should be. Don't miss his S.I.M.P.L.E analogy to make a complicated and messy life easier. Preview of this episode: 16:07 - “Like Parkinson's law, the work will expand to fill the time allotted for it. So we filled that plate. The issue is once we started getting 11 or 13-inch plates, well guess what? We still fill those up and now we just are obese. So the question is, can I one artificially limit the size of the plate, right? Can I time block an activity that might take other people four hours, I'm only gonna give it an hour and it's gonna take an hour.” 29:45 - “The Mark Twain quote, I always tell them is “Don't let the degree get in the way of your education”. That's really key too because if I ask them usually like if you could pay me whatever you're paying over four years and I hand you a piece of paper to your degree, how many of you would do it now?” 30:43 - “So reading now becomes stupid and boring. And why would I ever read? Because I hate reading. So don't read stuff you hate reading. But they have to read stuff in high school, right? So I think they're taught that school equals education, which equals boring. School equals boring sometimes but with education, it shouldn't, definitely not.” 53:18 - “I think there are people who think, because I do (X) I'm religious cuz I go to church, I'm religious. I remember that you guys both served missions. I served a mission. I got this letter from someone in my state presidency back home and the quote was, “going to church doesn't make you a spiritual person. Just like sitting in a garage doesn't make you a Cadillac or something.” 62:44 - “Regret can last forever. Discipline takes time right now but this is like Jim Roh's quote– but regret can last forever, right? I think that we've been sold something false there.” Learn more about Dr.Brown: Website - www.elevatepractices.com LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/brownchris
