In this episode, I spoke with Stuart Fiertz, co-founder and president of Cheyne Capital.I've known Stuart for years and one of the things I appreciate most about him is his willingness to say things that many people in the industry are thinking but few will say publicly. This conversation was a good example. We started with private credit, because, well, there's a lot to say. Stuart argued that many of the concerns he and other investors have raised over the years are beginning to surface. He discusses the rise of payment-in-kind loans, concentration in software and technology, and why he believes the industry still hasn't fully absorbed the consequences of the dramatic interest-rate shift that began in 2020.As Stuart put it: "You just can't have such a momentous change in an interest-rate regime and not have fallout from that."But he doesn't expect a dramatic collapse. In fact, the industry has become remarkably good, perhaps too good, at delaying any reckoning. Loose covenants, refinancing activity, continuation vehicles, evergreen capital, and fresh sources of funding are all helping extend the credit cycle. The problems are showing up, Stuart argues, but they're unfolding far more slowly than many expected. We also discussed what may ultimately unlock the industry's enormous backlog of unsold private companies. Stuart has been thinking about this question for a while. When he entered the business, private equity often created significant value by taking public companies private and improving them. Today, many businesses have been passed from one sponsor to another through multiple ownership cycles.Stuart's question is a simple one: "Who is leaving value on the table?" he asked. His point was not simply that valuations remain too high. “I think there's a little bit of a challenge here that is more fundamental than I think people realize. It's part that the lemon's been squeezed. I think it's going to take a meaningful valuation haircut to move them. And I'm just not sure why the PE firms would mark them down.”We also get into why Stuart believes transparency may be the industry's biggest challenge. He argues that investors, regulators, and managers would all benefit from more consistent reporting and warns that private credit firms risk inviting heavy-handed regulation if they don't become more forthcoming about what is happening inside portfolios. And there's more. Listen in for other topics and tidbits we covered:• The difference between "cockroaches" and "termites" when assessing risk in credit markets• Why semi-liquid credit funds may increase cyclicality and pressure managers to deploy capital• Whether the industry's push into retail was driven more by asset gathering than investor need and why it matters• What continuation funds reveal about today's private equity exit environment• Why Europe remains both attractive and frustrating for private market investors

In this episode, Nate Claiborne and Benjamin Kandt discuss the practice of engaging with Scripture as part of the Common Rhythm. The central theme revolves around prioritizing "Scripture before screens," emphasizing the importance of immersing oneself in God's word before being influenced by the myriad of voices from technology, social media, and daily distractions. Their discussion highlights the different ways people engage with Scripture—whether through reading, listening, studying, or meditating—and how the key posture should be one of receiving from God rather than merely completing a routine. The conversation delves into the historical context of how Scripture has been engaged with over time, including communal memorization before the advent of the printing press. They also touch on practical strategies, such as using the M'Cheyne reading plan and overcoming the "battle of the threshold"—the spiritual and mental resistance to starting the practice. They conclude with reflections on the authority of Scripture, its role in shaping believers' lives, and how the Holy Spirit confirms its truth in the hearts of those who read it with faith. The episode ultimately encourages listeners to approach the Bible as a means of encountering Jesus, rather than just a book of knowledge or moral instruction. You can find resources for the M'Cheyne reading plan on the NewCity Church Center App here

There are only a handful of people on the planet with as much wave design experience as Cheyne Magnusson. He's part of an obsessed, laser-focused elite squad of wave designers - individuals who can take a multi-million dollar piece of equipment and shape waves. His journey started nearly a decade ago when he was at Body Glove and the boss asked, “what can we do with wave pools?” He went on to shape the wave program at Waco, create the Palm Springs Surf Club and now, as we learned, branch out into more new projects (spoiler alert, he names locations). We joined him in Palm Springs on location at the newly re-opened Palm Springs Surf Club.

Pastor of Congregational Care and Missions Jason Dunn preaches about the covenantal relationship between Jonathan and David from 1 Samuel 18, illuminating the power of friendship and loyalty. Inspired by Justin Earley's book "Made for People" and insightful research on the perils of chronic loneliness, Pastor Jason helps challenge the notion that modern technology alone can fulfill our deepest need for connection. He also shows us Jonathan's extraordinary loyalty to David, even in the face of dire opposition from his own father, King Saul. This self-sacrificing friendship offers a powerful model for how mutual support can help us navigate life's adversities. Drawing on anthropologist Robin Dunbar's findings on the critical role human connections play in our health and longevity, Pastor Jason emphasizes that true friendships can indeed anchor us in stormy times.
