Welcome to ‘The Open GuardCast Jiu-Jitsu Podcast', which is a project dedicated to promoting jiu-jitsu professionals. Tune in each week, for interviews, current events, & analysis of everything going on in the world of jiu-jitsu & submission grappling! Your host is Danny O'Donnell. In addition to hosting this podcast, he is an MMA journalist contributing here at BE, as well as at Black Belt Mag. O'Donnell himself is a BJJ black belt who trains at the Marcio Andre Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Phoenix, AZ. Danny is joined by his Co-Host, Jake Watson, who is also a trained BJJ black belt, as well as the Asst Coach affiliated with the Maracaba BJJ Academy out of Mesa, AZ. Jake is also an occasional commentator for flograppling.com. Our guest this week is Kristian Woodmansee, Kristian is a black belt under Andre Galvao of Atos Jiu-Jitsu, owner of Logic Jiu-Jitsu in Philly, & a multiple-time gold medal winner at IBJJF Worlds, Pans, & Europeans. In this episode, we focused on making a living from jiu-jitsu, competing & training full time, getting into teaching, sponsorships, & on opening an academy. Q1: How did you originally get started in jiu-jitsu? - 1:32 Q2: Was there a moment when you were training jiu-jitsu when you thought I'm going to do this full-time, or was it something that happened organically? - 4:08 Q3: How did you end up at Atos? You trained at some other gyms before ending up in San Diego. Tell us about that journey. - 5:40 Q4: Why didn't you want to teach (when first arriving at Atos)? Did you feel it was taking away from competing? - 7:29 Q5: How far into your time at Atos did you start teaching? - 9:14 Q6: What are some things that you do differently from other instructors? - 10:40 Q7: Do you think the way you teach conceptually is what drives the success of your seminars? - 12:06 Q8: What advice would you give young black belts who are looking to teach more seminars? - 13:54 Q9: Did you have prior experience with the financial side of the business before setting up seminars, or is that something you learned throughout the process of setting up seminars? - 16:23 Q10: What were some of the things that helped you financially as a competitor, outside of teaching? - 18:19 Q11: What advice would you give to someone who's looking for sponsors but maybe they're going the traditional route looking at gi companies, or just companies that are very well-tied into the jiu-jitsu scene? How do you approach non-jiu-jitsu related businesses? - 23:20 Q12: Can you talk about the transition from chasing the highest level of the sport as a competitor to opening your academy? Did you make that transition consciously? - 26:14 Q13: No-gi is really big on the East Coast. When you went to Atos in Cali was that something you noticed? That gi was bigger on the West Coast & no-gi was bigger on the East Coast? - 31:18 Q14: Have you been keeping up with ADCC Trials? - 34:02 Q15: Did you happen to see Gordon Ryan's post after the Brazilian Trials? - 35:17 Q16: Mo Jassim is really pushing the sport forward with ADCC. What do you think needs to happen on the gi side to see that same sort of growth? - 40:14 You can follow Danny on twitter @DannyOD_BJJ, or insta @dannyod_bjj. His co-host, Jake Watson can be found on insta @disciple_jiujitsu & @maracaba_bjj. The show's instagram is @openguardcast, there's also an OFC fb page. This week on the show Maine and Miranda recap F2W 181 and SUG 26In the news section of the show we discuss the women's brackets for WNO championship; we looked at the Heavyweight bracket and the strawweight bracket for the event with $30,000 on the line for each bracket we discussed the front runners and who he thought had the best shot at taking the prize. In the recap section of the show we discussed fight to win 181 headline by Lucas Pinheiro vs Gabriel Sousa, We discussed the great position of work from both Grapplers including some nice single leg x and x guard transitional work we also discussed how pleased we were both Grapplers were willing to concede position to continue working and not simply fight for a non-scoring sweep during the match we discussed the kneebar attempt from Gabriel  that ended up securing his decision win.In our recap of Marcos Torregrosa vs Angel Lopez We talked about the finishing sequence Marcos hit on Lopez that included a great grip switch at the end of the lapel in order to secure the scarf hold choke.  We also discussed a number of variations for this choke and some names that we have heard it called by over the years. In our discussion of Fellipe Andrew vs Max Gimenis We talked about the Ironclad positional work of Andrew from The Sweep to the maintenance of top mount and top position and generally being in control of the match from Bell to Bell. In our recap of submission underground 26 (SUG) We kicked it off of the discussion of the only submission in regulation on the card in Justin Renick defeating Phelan Carron via Armbar off of the cage, prefaced with some interesting commentary.  We gave our thoughts on the Tag Team Main event that seemed very exploitable due to the rules. We also briefly discussed Gabriel Checco victory over Danilo Marques, Gillian Robertson win over Katlyn Chookagian That saw her Implement an interesting overtime strategy going from the back to the arm triangle and keeping position.  Plus Andy Varela defeating Kevin Casey, In overtime after Casey defended a very deep rear-naked choke for much of the regulation. In the outro section of the show Miranda discussed going up to Philadelphia to train with Josh Hinger, and Kristian Woodmansee; or a few days including training without air conditioning and some of the technical differences in the grapplers games. Maine Briefly discussed Physical Therapy progression and his thoughts on diversity of Josh's game.Recorded 8-16-2021

Recording from the FloGrappling table at IBJJF Nogi Worlds in Anaheim, CA, Josh put together a mish-mosh of short interviews with pretty much whoever was walking by the table at the right moment. Guests include the legendary Jackson Sousa, Robert Drysdale, Keenis Cornelius, Kristian Woodmansee, Nisar “Persian Papi” Loynab, as well as Hywel Teague. Jackson and Hywel gave us some very interesting insight on what it's like to grow up in the Favela and how Jackson built a successful life and a career that allowed him to become one of the most recognized and well-respected names in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kristian also gave us some parallel insights on his troubled childhood here in the USA. Both Jackson and Kristian now own their own academies in London and Philadelphia, respectively. These two guys are both great examples of success through hard work and perseverance. Robert Drysdale also drops some knowledge on us as well. Photo provided by FloGrappling. Huge thanks to the FloGrappling Crew for sharing their table space and power source with us.
