The “Your Story” Series In our last episode of this "Your Story" series, we are excited to be sharing with you all a passionate conversation we had with Ivy Hsu, actress and nurse, that really showcases that healing one’s body physically and healing from our sick diet culture is possible.  Ivy will share her story of being in the entertainment industry as a young adult and the horrific pressure she received while working, but then about the hope and healing that came as she gave herself permission to be free to be herself and became a Mom. From the unique southern culture of Texas to the entertainment industry of Taiwan, diet culture continues to have intense support of thin bodies, prioritize restriction over nourishment, and preach that “thinner is better.” Ivy’s story highlights how external pressures in our society greatly impacts body attunement both mentally and medically. Values and beliefs about food and bodies are pervasive across the globe. No matter the country you live in or culture you are surrounded by, we hope that creating compassion for your body and identifying the values you want for yourself and your family will help you heal.  Highlighting other’s stories can bring to light the pressures that that person is feeling and maybe somewhere, someone is listening and can relate, be motivated for change, and be inspired to rewrite their family and cultural legacy. We hope that from this series of stories that you feel inspired to do the same.     Sponsor: The “Your Story” season is sponsored by Dia & Co, a styling service and shop that exclusively serves women sizes 14-32 with clothing that offers exceptional quality and fit. The “Your Story” Series This week we are excited to be shifting our story narratives from parents to a daughter! Tershone Phillips, host of “The Right Mistake Podcast,” is joining us to share how her body image was challenged at the pivotal tween years and the protective measures that her parents took to help her maintain her confidence. We know parents can’t solve or control everything, as much as we wish we could, but we love the perspective of what we can try our best to accomplish in the home environment to raise confident kids inside and out. Where we are raised can greatly impact our body story, as we discuss this week, due to the sub cultures that vary from community to community. We are grateful for our listeners from all over the world and, as you all listen along with us this Season and rewrite your body story, our journal prompt for you is this: how was where you were raised, where you currently live, and the sub cultures that come along with your geographic locations, contribute to your lived experience in your body? No matter where you live, as parents it will be crucial to attempt, to our best abilities, to have our children exposed to various places and people to build kindness and awareness of diverse body sizes and shapes, races and ethnicities, religions and cultures. We are excited to hear Tershone chat today about her story, how her parents were a support to her, and give some great insight to us listeners who are parents about how we can keep our kids focused on what really matters! The "Your Story" Series Today we are welcoming Mom and advocate Mia O’Malley, who shares her story of a lifetime of dealing with fatphobia and body sized stigmas in the medical community and from loved ones from a young age. We are passionate about not only helping parents navigate body acceptance for themselves but also teaching them how to help their children find body acceptance so another generation is not impacted from weight stigma and body shaming. We hope that hearing Mia’s story allows people to see the long term journey of healing that occurs when children’s body trust is interrupted and how painful that is. We also love Mia’s story of hope and how her healing actually began once she reached that “promised land of thinness” at her wedding, only to realize that it wasn't so idyllic after all. And now she has turned her story into advocacy for plus size Mom’s through fashion, positive birth experiences, and plus size babywearing. We hope this inspires many of you to learn to love and trust your body at any age, no matter what your childhood experience is. The “Your Story” Series In this week's episode with Isis Freeman-Dirkson we discuss how the many layers of who we are, in addition to the lived experiences we have due to social constructs, can impact our body trust. We explore the power in healing our body image through logical thinking of understanding our body’s genetic components and the lies of the media BUT….healing the trauma in the body is so hard. We discuss a concept called Wise Mind that is taught in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which is a therapeutic modality that teaches skills on how to handle tough emotions with less reactivity. DBT teaches that there are two parts of our brains: the logical side (the facts of a situation) and the emotional side (the feelings, assumptions, and fears arise from a situation). We find peace when we merge the two - we acknowledge our pain and our suffering AND we hold on to the knowledge of our genetic blueprint or life experiences that have impacted our body. It’s a constant merging of both facts and feelings so our brains and our bodies begin to work in unison to heal. Your journal prompts for this week: What are the facts about fatphobia, weight stigma, our genetic makeup, societal expectations, family messages that are held in our brains? What are the emotions about how all those facts make us feel, the judgemental comments we have received, the beliefs we have about ourselves as a result of trauma or discrimination?   Sponsor: The “Your Story” season is sponsored by Dia & Co, a styling service and shop that exclusively serves women sizes 14-32 with clothing that offers exceptional quality and fit. The “Your Story” Series Today we are excited to welcome Vanessa Linn Hillis and hear their story of body acceptance or, as they bring up, the concept of body neutrality. This interview really dives into the many social constructs, especially gender ones, that impact our body story. We are all born as just bodies and souls and then social constructs, opinions of others, fears and skewed values from loved ones, all impact our awareness of our bodies and the development of our relationship with our bodies. Vanessa’s story highlights how commonplace it is for those assigned female at birth to have a negative body image and to participate in disparaging conversations with other females about our bodies, which confuses us in our pursuit of body neutrality, body trust, and appropriate separation from our body as our entire identity. On the surface, it might seem as if one’s relationship with food and exploration of their gender identity seem unconnected, but, as you will hear Vanessa share, the nuanced connection is one that needs to be studied more and spoken of more often. Overall, the discomfort one feels of being in one’s body can come from a variety of sources and healing this discomfort comes from exactly what we are discussing this season: how one’s body story was developed and what steps they are taking to rewrite the story in a preferred narrative that makes them feel empowered, free, and the author of the story. The “Your Story” Series Today we are stoked to hear from Julia Parzyck, an eating disorder recovery coach and body-acceptance influencer @fitfatandallthat, who joined us to share her story of healing and touch on the important piece of healing that includes putting a critical eye towards the wellness industry, diet culture, and redefining the term “healthy.” Many people think that those in the anti diet world over analyze language and that don’t promote health - but what people fail to understand is that we are SO passionate about health. What we truly want to critique and overanalyze is how the subtle comments about our bodies and others bodies, about good foods and bad foods, about healthy weight vs unhealthy weight, and about simplifying healthy to really mean skinny absolutely destroys the key foundation to health. The true foundation of health is decreased body shame, flexibility with food, awareness of our unique genetic makeup, and realizing that our bodies are just a vehicle to our souls. If our souls cannot freely fly because they are weighed down by our insecurities and obsession with our appearance, then we are not healthy. As you listen to Julia’s story, and as you navigate healing your body, try to keep this reflection prompt in mind: what piece of your food or fitness routine do you need to take a critical, anti diet lens to in order to explore your intentions and cultural messaging?   Sponsor: The “Your Story” season is sponsored by Dia & Co, a styling service and shop that exclusively serves women sizes 14-32 with clothing that offers exceptional quality and fit. The "Your Story" Series Today we are chatting with Dubhe Ferrer about how to channel positive thinking and challenge both familial and societal stereotypes. So often in our discussions with people, we hear them say “I want to be body positive, but how?” It takes a great UNLEARNING and RELEARNING to help us find body positivity, so surrounding yourself with affirmations, watching who you follow on social media, reading books that educate you on the systemic oppression that fuels diet culture, and being mindful of your conversations are all tools toward helping with the relearning process. If you find your biggest obstacle in finding body positivity is feeling you or your body doesn’t DESERVE that, then finding help from a professional can help you with uncovering the roots of your self worth. While body positivity is a trendy term these days, it may seem overwhelming to try to learn to love your body, so we want to introduce you to a concept called body neutrality. In short, body neutrality is rooted in acknowledging what your body does, not how it appears. This is where we challenge you to try to have grace for your genetics and body story by acknowledging the strengths your body has as well as the experiences it has been through and move about the world in a way that brings you joy. The "Your Story" Series In this week’s episode we are honored to hear from Kylie Mitchell, a non-diet dietitian over @immaeatthat who helps make eating and being in your body less complicated. In this episode we discuss one of the big misconceptions that we hear about intuitive eating and body acceptance, which is that intuitive eating means you can eat whatever you want and not care about your body. The reason why this myth pops up is because it seems to be the opposite of diet culture messaging, when really intuitive eating is all about self care, body attunement and the nuanced pieces of gentle nutrition and joyful movement.  We define self-care as a whole body experience that includes honoring your physical, emotional, and mental needs. This means that sometimes your body wants veggies and sometimes it just wants ice cream, sometimes your body craves movement in a variety of ways, and sometimes it craves rest to heal and recuperate - and all are great options for self care. As you listen to Kylie’s story, and as you navigate healing your body, try to keep this reflection prompt in mind: how do I learn to take care of my body and listen to it so I can feel truly at home in it? The "Your Story" Series In this week’s episode we are being joined by a mother daughter team! Dr Lesley Williams and her 9 year old daughter Leyla discuss the book that was written by Dr Williams after her daughter’s experience with body shaming at school. As you know, this season’s theme is “Your Story” and we are excited about the angle of this episode because we are hearing two stories in this interview. We get to hear Leyla’s body story that she has already begun to write in her short life as well as hear the story from a Mama’s perspective about what it is like to watch her daughter’s story unfold. It brings to light the importance of having a home environment that is inclusive, that discusses bullying, confidence, race, and cultural narratives in age appropriate ways, and yet we touched on how there is still a bigger, badder, world out there that will impact our children regardless of the environment we create at home.  A big piece of this story for us as parents is learning how to love on our littlest ones and guide them to the best of our ability, but knowing that we cannot protect them for everything, just to prepare them. As Dr William’s book is called, “Free to Be Me,” we hope that this next generation is even more free to be themselves than previous generations and that society continues to heal in so many ways. www.lesleywilliamsmd.com   Sponsor: The “Your Story” season is sponsored by Dia & Co, a styling service and shop that exclusively serves women sizes 14-32 with clothing that offers exceptional quality and fit. With a reported $95M in venture funding to date and the recent release of her brand's collaboration with iconic designer Betsey Johnson, she's showing that big name labels are ready to offer clothing in sizes that represent the real range of the U.S. population -- and not simply the minority whose bodies align with an industry's outdated, psychologically damaging and discriminatory marketing tactics. It started as a sort of therapy session for jilted columnist Jeff Jacobs, who came up empty in his search for his beloved ConFLiCT trophy earlier this week. But, inevitably, the latest episode of the UConn Insider podcast shifted its focus to the man behind the manufactured rivalry that’s still haunting him more than 1,500 miles away: former UConn football coach and current Nebraska defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. Jacobs joined beat reporter Mike Anthony and online producer Chris Brodeur to discuss the strange odyssey of the rivalry that wasn’t between the Huskies and UCF (7:00), their favorite Diaco-isms (9:30), where the coach’s career appears to be headed (12:00) and the parallels between a Diaco press conference and one featuring Jim Calhoun (15:00). Then, the guys consider whether the battered Bryant Shirreffs should return as the Huskies’ starting quarterback this season (20:30). They discuss the idea, posited by coach Randy Edsall, that many of the younger players on this team are “hitting the wall” (27:00) and wrap things up with some attendance talk (38:00).

Sometimes, it feels like the fashion industry just doesn’t care. But as someone who has the privilege to interact with those behind-the-scenes of many fashion brands in my role as a plus size model, I know that this is far from true! Like many young children, I loved a good book. Books took me to magical lands. Listening to the stories was a pleasant way to while away time, dream about foreign people and places, and spend time with my Dad or Mom or big sister—whoever volunteered to read to me. I couldn’t wait to read on my own, and once I did, I dug into books like a kid on a mission. My favorite day as a first grader was our weekly trip to the school library. I built my reading skills with the Spot series and moved on to Charlotte’s Web, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Cinderella. As the daughter of a journalist and a short story and poetry writer, I learned to love literature, was edited throughout my life, and spent many hours doing writing-related things—attending conferences, running writing workshops, writing books together with family members. Writing is in my blood. And so is the interest in helping you get your writing done, whether it’s for your business, or for you personally. And even though my attention at one point turned to science (specifically microbiology, a fascinating subject) and then to business--writing, and stories, never left me. Instead, I looked for ways to use my talents. I wrote technical documents (thank you science degree and graduate coursework), and compose business literature when working in corporate communications. As a freelance writer, I edited textbooks and a variety of educational materials, and wrote a textbook and a variety of educational materials. I wrote articles of all sorts for national magazines and was a stringer for a large daily newspaper in Philadelphia. When the internet proved to be a powerful marketing tool, I wrote blog posts for the business I started with my business partner, along with newsletters, sales letters, and postcard copy. That love of words developed in my childhood followed me throughout my life. In short, I am a storyteller, incorporating the best writing and editing practices to your marketing, business and technical documents. From simple, short bios, to blog posts, articles, white papers, and more, you get the expertise that a lifetime of reading and writing has to offer.
