Welcome back to our Vol 1 Greatest Hits! Today we are sharing an episode that originally aired in May of 2019. With our brand name being The Produce Moms and our B Corp values for inclusivity, it's important for us to pause and recognize the fact that motherhood and parenthood can be a difficult topic for many. There's a lot of reasons this is a difficult topic, but a leading reason is infertility.   My husband and I had 4 miscarriages between our two sons, and I vividly remember all the polarizing emotions associated with trying to get pregnant, trying to stay pregnant, and more. Members of our team struggled with infertility for years, other members of our team have estranged relationships with their mothers or parents due to neglect, abuse, personality conflicts, and more.   Motherhood is something we celebrate here at The Produce Moms - each and every day. BUT, it's important that we also use this platform to honor people who are struggling with parenthood - for whatever reason.   Today's greatest hit welcomes Elizabeth Shaw, registered dietitian and a 2x Amazon bestselling author of “Fertility Foods: 100+ Recipes to Nourish Your Body While Trying to Conceive.” And “The Stress-Free IVF Nutrition Guide.”   Enjoy this Greatest Hit: The Link Between Nutrition & Fertility with Elizabeth Shaw.

There are still a few spots remaining for my Summer Mastermind! If you are feeling a pull, apply here to get started. www.kellycovert.com/mastermind Here are some of the big topics we talked about… We all know people who are optimistic and pessimistic. Elizabeth talks about how it’s so important what you do with what you’re given! How Elizabeth stalled for 7 years in launching her business because of perfectionism and discusses how important it’s been to release expectations, accept “good enough,” and find the right people on her path Shutting off input and expressing herself creatively helps her be able to stay in the present moment, even if it’s a short meditation and journal period in the morning Seeing optimism in smaller steps than one obstacle Seeing the potential for the best in yourself and others can be an opportunity for growth and encouragement, or it can lead to crippling perfectionism. Seek balance! Practical optimism is about shifting your experience to more positivity despite what hardships may happen. See the good, improve the world around you, and learn! In Elizabeth’s Voice “I’m very driven and I always think there’s something more to be working towards and improving. I’m also embracing the good in ‘what is,’ even if it doesn’t always look good on the surface.” “I stopped seeing the good in front of me, or the good in what was, because I was always looking for how to make it better.” “What’s the point of living an optimistic life if you’re not enjoying the life you’re living now? If you’re only looking to the future, you’re missing out on so much in the moment.” “If we’re just thinking optimistically towards the future we’re not actually doing anything to create that or move towards that. Action gets us out of where we are, gives us opportunities to learn, and teaches us lessons in how to apply optimism.” “I attribute so much of the fulfillment and success I have in my life to living optimistically. I look for opportunities rather than be shut down by obstacles. I look for ways to connect and see others. I believe there is so much potential in the world.” Connect with Elizabeth WebsiteBook: The Optimist’s ManifestoInstagram

We know that proper nutrition is one of the primary foundations for a happy and healthy life. Eating a well-balanced diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables has been linked to numerous health benefits like lower blood pressure, better heart health, improved digestion, and more. But what about fertility? Is it possible to boost your reproductive health by adjusting your diet? “We already know that omega-3 fatty acids are vital for heart and brain health. Now we're seeing research connecting omega-3 consumption with fetal development and growth, especially in those first thousand days of life.” - Elizabeth Shaw (9:15 - 9:31) Just like many other aspects of your health, eating a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables can, in fact, have a positive effect on your fertility. Some nutritionists even refer to fresh produce as “fertility foods.” In this article, we'll explore some tips on how you can eat the right foods to boost your fertility, along with your overall health. Both men and women can benefit from fertility foods. A diet that is conducive to fertility can benefit both the father and the mother. Some studies have shown that foods that are high in antioxidants, like berries and kale, can boost sperm health in men. Although the research has been primarily focused on women so far, it takes both parents to create a life. With that in mind, future fathers would be well-advised to add antioxidant-rich fertility foods to their diets. Three nutrients you can add to your diet to improve fertility. Fertility is just one aspect of overall health. If you're eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies regularly, you're more likely to enjoy better health, which includes reproductive health. However, consuming more of the following three nutrients can specifically improve your fertility health. Choline - Choline is an essential nutrient that is similar to vitamin B, but almost 90% of Americans aren't getting enough of it. It plays a critical role in promoting health in all stages of life, but choline is particularly vital for the development of the fetal brain health. Egg yolks are one of the best sources of choline, along with dark leafy greens. One of the ways you can include more choline in your diet is by adding some steamed collard greens or spinach to your omelet for breakfast. Omega-3 fatty acids - We know that omega-3 fatty acids are essential for keeping the heart and the brain healthy. We're now discovering that it also plays a vital role in fetal health and development during the critical first thousand days of life. You can add more omega-3 in your diet by eating flax seeds and chia seeds, or by increasing your seafood consumption. Fiber - Fiber is another vital nutrient when it comes to fertility health, but most Americans aren't getting enough. Consuming adequate fiber will help your body remove excess hormones and keep your blood sugar balanced, keeping you feeling full longer. You can add more fiber in your diet by eating more fresh produce, both raw and cooked. Can supplements replace natural food sources for essential nutrients? The answer will vary depending on the person, and the nutrient in question, because different people process certain nutrients differently. For example, some people have a gene mutation which makes it difficult for them to break down and absorb folic acid. They require a methylated form of folic acid to be able to process it and use it to support fetal development and growth. That being said, the general rule to follow is to try to get all of your nutrients from food sources first. Then you can use supplements as a safety net to cover any nutrients that might be missing from your diet. “One thing we always recommend at The Produce Moms is to simplify the process by choosing a diet that has an abundance of fruits and vegetables, both in volume and variety.” - Lori Taylor (16:46 - 16:58) With all the conflicting information we see on the news and on social media, it can be easy to get confused about nutrition. It is now more essential than ever to follow credible sources, and to only consume science-based information. You can simplify the process by eating plenty of fresh produce. Make sure to include a variety of different fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains and lean proteins. That is your best bet for getting a wide array of nutrients to support all the functions in your body, including fertility. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Ridley Scott’s 1979’s Alien, written by Dan O’Bannon with creature designs by H.R. Giger, may have not blown the box office away, but it became one of the greatest science fiction and horror films of all time. It was followed up by James Cameron’s Aliens which too became a classic film. David Fincher’s Alien 3, with its troubled production, still was generally enjoyed, but then afterwards with Alien Resurrection and the Alien vs. Predator films, the franchise devolved into farce. However, Ridley Scott returned to the franchise with Prometheus, focusing on the iconic “Space Jockey” from the first film. Though the film landed more in the Alien 3 mold (enjoyable but a miss), Scott is back with a new film, Alien Covenant. The movie has created much buzz in hopes that it will reinvigorate a beloved franchise that many felt was either in need of a fresh take on the subject or a need for a worthy end. Michael Fassbender returns from Prometheus in a dual role which has received much praise. Will fans be given the answers about the space jockeys, the engineers, and the fates of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and the robot David? Dark Discussions takes a look at the new film, discussing where it fits into the franchise, and whether or not Ridley Scott has produced another timeless sci-fi classic. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
