Expect F-bombs, stories of sharks and water buffalo, and a no-holds-barred look at fat bias in media, the myth of mentorship, and why problem-solving—not perfection—is the real career flex. Emotional Pain and Body Shame
In this episode of Fitness & Sushi, I'm breaking down the 10 most common signs that your relationship with your body has been shaped by shame, fear, and diet culture—not by truth or self-compassion. In this episode – “Top 10 Signs You Have a Poor Relationship With Your Body (That Diet Culture Doesn't Want You to Notice)” – you'll learn…
There's a powerful psychological state that can paralyze us, interfere with effective relationships, block our empathy, and cause us to inflict harm. It's called shame.Today, David Bedrick shares what shame is, how it's created, and its connection to trauma. Some say shame keeps us humble, but David shares why we don't need shame because it's not the same as embarrassment or regret. We unpack why shame is not a feeling but a psychological state that can leave you numb - and how you can instead create a space of safety and security within yourself. David shares how we can snap out of a shame spiral in the moment and also gives insights as to why some people may feel a need to shame others. David makes us think about our need to “solve,” or pathologize as he puts it, shame, anger, depression, and the like rather than process root causes to make meaning. He offers an intriguing thought experiment to try to break yourself of this tendency! Lastly, we touch on how to unashame conflict and dialogue through conflict in a more productive way. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Shame is different from embarrassment or humiliation. Shame is a psychological state that may have feelings associated with it. Negative feelings are not bad - they can even be helpful for understanding our behavior and lead us to making an action toward repair. Say the criticisms in your head aloud from the perspective of the negatives - it gives you a chance to respond and advocate for yourself. "If shame enters my system, the only thing I care about is removing the bad experience I have in myself. I don't care about you. I care about being low. In the fully shame psyche, you don't exist as a person that matters to me at all." — David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. Most people are focusing on how their bodies look, not how they feel—and it's holding them back.If you've ever declined an invitation because of how you felt about your body, avoided activities you love, or spent hours criticizing yourself in the mirror, this conversation is your wake-up call. In this episode, I sit down with Taryn Brumfitt, founder of the Body Image Movement and Australian of the Year 2023, to break down why embracing your body isn't just about feeling better—it's about living better. We're tackling the biggest misconceptions about body image—like why focusing on appearance keeps us stuck, why self-love isn't fluffy but foundational, and how body acceptance actually leads to healthier behaviors than body criticism. Plus, we're getting into practical strategies for handling body commentary from family members, maintaining progress when you have a "wobbly moment," and why taking up space as a woman is so revolutionary.Taryn Brumfitt is an Australian filmmaker, author, and speaker internationally renowned for her work in promoting body acceptance. She is the founder of the Body Image Movement, a global initiative dedicated to transforming the way people think and speak about their bodies, encouraging self-acceptance and self-love.In 2023, Taryn was named Australian of the Year for her significant efforts in changing societal perceptions of body image and fostering positivity around self-image.You can learn more about her mission at https://www.bodyimagemovement.com/embrace-you/We Also Discuss:(01:00) Body Image and Self-Acceptance (03:27) Embracing Body Image and Self-Love(13:31) Empowering Body Acceptance Conversations(17:17) Transforming Body Image Through Reframing(26:14) Setting Boundaries for Positive Body Image(35:20) Journeying Towards Body Acceptance Together(43:27) Empowering Women(57:05) Spreading Love and Taking ActionThank You to Our Sponsors: Broads: Broads gives you structured, progressive training and a powerhouse community to keep you strong, consistent, and unstoppable. The first time I looked in a mirror after my stroke, I didn't know who was staring back at me. My face was unrecognizable, and my body might as well have been a stranger's. It took me years to accept the reality of my new appearance. Feeling anything close to "positivity" was not in the realm of possibility. We're living in the era of body positivity and I am HERE for it! But as a woman living with disabilities, I can't always muster up positive feelings about a body that doesn't function well much of the time. This reality could set me up for some major body negativity, but I've found another option.Today we're talking all about body neutrality—what it means, how I got here, and why I'm convinced it's the healthiest relationship I can have to my body. In this unguarded episode, my teammate Leah and I get vulnerable about our physical insecurities, the cultural beauty standards we have (and haven't) internalized, our experiences with weight loss, and the weirdness of postpartum body changes. If body positivity feels out of your reach, you need to hit play on this episode in your favorite podcast app.Show Notes:Suffer Strong - https://a.co/d/8DKyzM7Jess Connolly - https://www.instagram.com/jessaconnolly/Breaking Free from Body Shame by Jess Connolly - https://a.co/d/fAj7sL8Episode 85: My New Way of Understand Beauty with Brook HensleyMy Body Neutrality writing that appeared on Live Original: https://liveoriginal.com/author/katherine-wolf/Scriptures referenced in this episode:2 Corinthians 4:162 Chronicles 20:12 (Katherine did not make it up!)***There's so much more to the story. For more messages of hope, free resources, and opportunities to connect with me, visit https://hopeheals.com/katherine.Follow me in Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hopeheals/Subscribe to The GoodHard Story Podcast!Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/good-hard-story-podcast/id1496882479Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/0OYz6G9Q2tNNVOX9YSdmFb?si=043bd6b10a664bebWant a little hope in your inbox? On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I had the honor and delight of speaking with one of my teachers and mentors, David Bedrick!David is a teacher, counselor, attorney, and the founder of The Sante Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies. He's also the author of four books and on this episode, we discuss his latest: THE UNSHAMING WAY - A Compassionate Guide to Dismantling Shame. This fantastic book addresses how to heal from shame, unlearn self-blame, and reclaim your story. As someone who has been deeply impacted by his work on shame and the unshaming process, I was super excited to dive into a rich conversation about vulnerability, trauma, and the power of authentic expression. We also explored the profound impact of violence, childhood trauma, and how the internalization of shame can shape our adult experiences. Perhaps most importantly, David shared his unique approach to "unshaming," which involves genuine curiosity and a deep respect for each person's sacred story. Rather than trying to fix or change someone, he invites them to fully inhabit and express their authentic selves - a process that often unlocks hidden gifts and strengths. One of the surprising key moments for me was when David and I both reflected on how we were once labeled as "shy" kids, when in reality, we were simply responding to fear and a lack of safety!I've benefited immensely from this work, and now I'm so happy to get to share David and these insights with you.I'd love to hear your favorite and most impactful takeaways, too!KEY POINTS:• The power of vulnerability and transparency in building trust and safety• How childhood trauma can lead to internalized shame and self-criticism• Reframing "shyness" as a response to fear - rather than a personality trait• David Bedrick's definition of shame as a viewpoint, not just a feeling• The transformative potential of authentic expression and the "unshaming" process• The exacerbating role of systemic oppression in fueling internalized shame• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program DAVID'S BIO: David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. PW, is a teacher, counselor, and attorney. He grew up in a family marked by violence. While his father's brutality was physical and verbal, his mother's denial and gaslighting had its own covert power. This formative context introduced David early to the etiology of shame and instilled an urge to unshame.Professionally, he was on the faculty for the University of Phoenix and the Process Work Institute in the U.S. and Poland and is the founder of the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies where he trains therapists, coaches and healers and offers workshops for individuals to further their own personal development.David writes for Psychology Today and is the author of four books: Talking Back to Dr. Phil: Alternatives to Mainstream Psychology and Revisioning Activism: Bringing Depth, Dialogue, and Diversity to Individual and Social Change, and You Can't Judge a Body by Its Cover: 17 Women's Stories of Hunger, Body Shame and Redemption. His new fourth book, The Unshaming Way, was published by North Atlantic books in November 2024.Links:Order The Unshaming Way: https://a.co/d/dYTwNa7Website: https://www.davidbedrick.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/david.bedrick/Facebook:

The holidays can bring up some big feelings about our bodies, from family gatherings (where people might comment about the size of our jeans or the food on our plates) to upended schedules and routines that have us grabbing too many holiday treats or, for some, white-knuckling it through to January. This week's episode features Dr. Jeanne Catanzaro, who's a bit of an IFS rockstar. Jeanne has been one of the strongest voices in the IFS community in regard to food and body concerns, and I'm so thrilled to have her on the podcast! Just a little about her: Jeanne is a clinical psychologist who has specialized in the treatment of disordered eating and trauma for over twenty-five years. She trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing®, and eye movement-desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) before discovering the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Jeanne is known for her compassionate and intuitive appreciation of the relational dynamics, internal and external, that keep people stuck in painful relationships with food and their bodies. In addition to serving as a leader of the IFS Institute, Jeanne facilitates IFS consultation groups, workshops, and retreats on Unburdened Eating. Jeanne is also the author of Unburdened Eating, a wonderful book that just came out earlier this year. And she also wrote a really fantastic article for the IFS Institute (that we discuss in this episode) called IFS's Viewpoint on Dieting and Cultural Harm. This article explicitly states that the IFS Institute does not support intentional weight loss due to the harm it can cause. Throughout this week's episode, Jeanne and I touch upon: The differences between IFS and other therapy models in how they approach food and body concerns How diet culture perpetuates the belief that there's something wrong with your body The fact that all negative feelings about the body come from outside of us The importance of being curious toward our parts Having compassion toward all of our parts, including those who are trying to manage our bodies by focusing on food and weight What is “unburdened eating” The need for community when working on food and body concerns Jeanne also gives us some great advice in terms of how to start working on food and body concerns. She suggests that we ask ourselves the following questions: What would it be like if I wasn't always trying to fix my body? What would it be like if I wasn't always criticizing my body? What if my body wasn't a problem to be solved? Can I get curious about the parts of me that feel like my body needs to change? You might have already noticed parts surfacing just by reading those questions. When you can, take some time to really sit with and answer them. We cover a lot of important ground in this episode, and I'm just thrilled and honored to have one of the best on my show. A huge thanks to Jeanne for taking the time and for all of the wisdom she imparts. Check it out! It also means lots and lots of raking is in my future! And it also means sweater weather!!!! Yay!!! So many of my parts love sweater weather. Throwing on a big cable-knit sweater just feels so cozy. And I just love fall colors (especially forest green--I can't tell you how many forest green sweaters I have). But do you know another reason why some of my parts love sweater weather? Because I can hide under sweaters. Especially ponchos--you can't really tell what my body looks like under a poncho. And some of my parts are really happy about that. In my last podcast episode, Amy Pershing shared her incredible wisdom about Binge Eating Disorder. She also touched on the topic of body shame. And since healing body shame is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult aspects of this type of work, I thought we should continue the discussion. In this week's podcast episode, we're exploring all aspects of body shame, starting with what it is (spoiler alert--it's not just negative body image). We move into a discussion about the difference between parts of us who carry shame about our body (generally exiles) and parts who shame our body as a way of trying to help us (protector parts). Finally, we end the episode on how to start healing body shame. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make everyone's body shame disappear. At the very least, I wish I could promise you that this is a quick, easy process. Unfortunately though, I can't. But I absolutely do think it's possible to release a lot of this shame and feel much better about and comfortable within your body. And hopefully, this week's podcast episode will help! Take a listen!

In this bonus episode, I'm answering a listener question about why seeing photos of ourselves—especially in group settings—can trigger feelings of body shame and comparison. The question is specifically about hating a photo and feeling the strong desire to lose weight (despite knowing intellectually that all bodies are worthy bodies, and believing in the anti-diet culture movement). Tune in to hear more about: body neutrality and emotional triggers how diet culture conditions us to view our bodies through a critical lens why photos can be another form of body checking how to cope with photos we hate social comparison theory and why we compare ourselves to others unraveling the habit of comparison intersectionality and body hierarchies using self-compassion as a tool for navigating body grief practical tips for how to reclaim your body from guilt and shame using mindfulness to separate our thoughts from our self-worth actions we can take to reduce the negative feelings that accompany photos GOOD NEWS! Teacher, counselor, and attorney David Bedrick has developed a profound method for helping people unshame their shame. In this third episode of our short non-grad series of four, David and Drew dive deep into a conversation about the true nature of shame and how to heal it through what David calls Unshaming. While David is not a graduate of the Process, his work is very closely aligned with the work of the Process. As David says, "Shame is an internalized vision of oneself. It creates feelings, but they are not feelings." According to David, to heal shame, someone must truly witness us. In telling our story of what happened, we need to be heard, seen, and understood. We need to be humanized, not stigmatized or pathologized. He says we must be "witnessed for being a human being who's been through an experience. That's unshaming. That's humanizing." We hope you enjoy this profound conversation on the nature of healing shame with David and Drew. **This episode mentions physical and sexual violence and may not be suitable for all listeners. Please use your discretion. More about David Bedrick: David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. PW grew up in a family marked by violence. While his father's brutality was physical and verbal, his mother's denial and gaslighting had its own covert power. This formative context introduced David early to the etiology of shame and instilled an urge to unshame. Professionally, he was on the faculty for the University of Phoenix and the Process Work Institute in the U.S. and Poland and is the founder of the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies where he trains therapists, coaches, and healers and offers workshops for individuals to further their own personal development. In this episode, we begin to talk about what it means to be shamelessly sexy. The truth is that as women, we live in a culture where we are ashamed of our bodies and how we look. Our confidence in life isn't always built on our skill set, but rather on how we feel about ourselves. It is time to redefine sexy and stop the madness around body shaming. It is too prevalent in this world that almost every woman I know is on a diet. Focusing on losing weight to look and feel better. What if we could ... look and feel better in the skin we were in?... appreciate and love the body we have?... love our imperfections as opposed to letting them control us?The truth is we let the way we see our body impact our overall mental health and well-being.

Body shame is real. We've all experienced it, but what do we do about it? Earlier in May, Oprah Winfrey hosted a three-hour-long forum with body love experts, actresses, and influencers to start a conversation about bodies, weight, and how we can start changing the narrative. Titled, "Making the Shift" and hosted by WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers), the conversation had several meaningful moments where women from all over the country shared the hurt, shame, and confusion they'd felt about their body image. In today's episode, Heather digs into what happened in the Oprah conversation. She explores how the one piece missing from these eloquent conversations is the key unlocking body shame. If you've been struggling with your body size or shape, and are looking for a fresh answer that's meatier than telling yourself positive affirmations in the mirror, this conversation will be a great encouragement to you. There are real answers out there for your body image struggles -- and the good news is they don't require Jedi mind tricks or "naked jump roping in front of the mirror" (yes, that was from the Oprah special!!!). Hey Rebel! There's nothing I love more than hearing people who struggled with their relationships with food for so long recount how intuitive eating changed their lives for the better. That's the story you'll be hearing today, as my past group coaching client, Michelle, shares how she went from obsessing over food, struggling with her body image, and overcoming addiction, to now being in a place where she can go on spontaneous dates, listen to her body, and never diet again! Michelle shares so much wisdom about the mindset shifts she made to begin challenging her relationship with food. She realized that if you are going to have to eat every day for the rest of your life, you might as well make the best of it! You'll also hear her discuss: The origin story of her body shame growing up When she realized her food struggles deserved help How she moved through the honeymoon phase The importance of embracing fear throughout the journey & more! This week on Real Talk with Rachael in talking with Jess Connolly. Jess is the author or co-author of several books, including Wild and Free, You Are the Girl for the Job, and Breaking Free from Body Shame. Along with her husband, Nick, she planted Bright City Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where they live with their four children. Jess is a woman who wants to leave her generation more in awe of God than she found it. She is passionate about family, God's Word, and seeing women take their place in the kingdom. Key Points from Our Conversation: We live in a defeated acceptance of exhaustion. Living right now is too much. Life is tiring and we're accepting defeat because we think this is just how things are. Women often feel they need permission to rest, but we don't need permission. God invites us to rest - He even commands it. He wants rest for us. There will always be more to do. Ask yourself if you need to see accomplishment more than you need to feel at home in your body and soul. Do we need acceptance from others more than we need communion with God, our bodies, and our people? God integrated rest into life. We work from rest, not rest from work. We'll never be prepared if we don't start from a place of rest. Spiritual exhaustion occurs anytime we trade abundance with God for obligation. We are not obligated to do things for God. He can act independently of us. God asks us to help and join in His good works, but His love for us is not based on our actions or inaction. Our society has reached a point where exhaustion is normal – maybe even something to be proud of. Yes, there are life factors that affect sleep, but many of us aren't victims of fatigue, we're volunteers. Consider this - would God praise you for working past the point of exhaustion or would He want you to be a good steward of your body and energy? There are a lot of practical ways to get more sleep like turning off the TV, putting the phone down, using blue light blocking glasses, or journaling. Pay attention to your pace during the day. Did you overcommit? Are you consistently feeling rushed? Notice the cues your body is giving you and give yourself what you need. Don't overcomplicate the sabbath. It's simply 24 hours of enjoying God and the life He has given us. How you enjoy Him is your choice, but don't try to get ahead. Let's Get Real Practical: What area of rest do you need to lean into with the Lord and reevaluate this season? What beliefs do you have about rest and do those beliefs line up with God's Word? Connect with Jess: website | Instagram | Facebook Connect with Rachael: website | Instagram | Facebook
According to a survey, 97% of women have at least one “I hate my body” moments in a day. That's a staggering statistic! Well, the beauty and diet industry just loves that, and in fact, they work hard to create those moments so you'll buy their books or products or lies! But what if we rejected their lies and the false beauty narrative that exists in our culture? What if we embraced the truth about what God says about us and could break free from self-scrutiny and judgment? Well, my friend, get ready! Because author and therapist Melissa Johnson is here to expose the lies that fuel those “I hate my body” moments. She'll repair the broken beauty narrative that teaches you to look for the flaws and instead help you see the true, authentic beauty you've always had. SHOW NOTES: 413Podcast.com/291

Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 614 Why is nobody talking about HPV; the world's most common sexually transmitted infection? Mimi Lindquist, Nutrition Expert and AHCC Educator, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 614, to spread awareness about HPV which affects up to 90% of the population, how medicinal mushrooms help boost immune surveillance, how to remove shame around HPV, and why viruses are messengers telling you to focus on your health. "HPV is the most commonly transmitted STI. 80 to 90% of us will have to deal with this at some point in our lives because it is that common. We see that in clinical research that really strong, low-grade stress and chronic stress degrades our ability to have a robust immune surveillance. It's a nudge from your body that says, hey, I need help. I need you to be more in balance." - Mimi Lindquist Biohack Your Mind & Body with Plunge Ice Baths! Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Power Quotes From The Show The Shame Around HPV "HPV is not just a physical diagnosis because of the shame that surrounds the diagnosis. Why would a woman feel shame about having the equivalent of the common cold for the cervix?" - Mimi Lindquist The Antidote to Shame "We shame pleasure and not just in a sexual sense. The antidote to the shame is actually more pleasure. Tapping into more pleasure in your life taps you into presence. You can't experience pleasure without being present." - Mimi Lindquist Treat The Root Cause, Not The Symptom "The medical system is not set up to help your long-term health and vitality thrive. It's set up to manage symptoms. About 350,000 women die every year of cervical cancer. Their solution is to go in and remove a portion of the cervix. Cutting away a part of the body is not a solution. It's just turning off the check engine light. If we don't address that initial immune dysfunction, we're not addressing the root of why there is a signal from your body the first place." - Mimi Lindquist Links From Today's Show Mimi Lindquist Clear HPV - Use code "JOSH10" for 10% off enrollment in the CLEAR + FREE program Shawn Stevenson 362 Zach Bush MD: Saving The Soil, Saving Humanity Dr. Nathan Riley Gardasil Lawsuit 603 Honoring Christian Oliver: What Death Teaches Us About Living A Generous Life Paul Stamets Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products Biohacking BREATHE - 33% off with the code “PODCAST33” SaunaSpace - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" PLUNGE - $150 off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" SiPhox - 10% off with code "JOSH" BON CHARGE - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" SpectraSculpt - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" Defender Shield - 10% off with the code "TRENT10" Neuvana - 15% off with the code "WELLNESSFORCE" Supplements Organifi - 20% off with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" LiftMode - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Adapt Naturals - 15% off with code "WELLNESSFORCE" MitoZen - 10% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Activation Products - 20% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” BiOptimizers - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Lightbody Total Eye Health - 20% off with "JOSH20" at checkout. We're constantly getting bombarded with messages about our bodies: They're too big. They're too small. They're not muscular enough, not curvy enough, and so on and so on. Rebecca has lived in a bigger body all her life and she wants the messaging to stop. She's done all the things—followed plus-size influencers, deemphasized weight from her health goals, tried to rewire how she thinks about weight. But it's just not working. In this episode, Carvell Wallace brings in Ronald Young Jr., host of Weight For It. Ronald challenges the notion that we need to love our bodies and helps Rebecca navigate away from stigmatized “fixes” and toward a place of acceptance. “If you don't quit feeding her, she will never find a man!” My mother once screamed that at my granny after I ate a second helping of mashed potatoes. I was 10. I'm 49 now, but I still remember that moment clear as day. When you were a kid, did someone say or do something that sent the message your body is “bad” or “needs fixing?” Or maybe you worry you're sending that message to your kid(s), even if you don't say it out loud. Listen to today's episode. I go deep on body shame with Master Certified Coach Lisa Smith on her Real World Peaceful Parenting podcast. We talk about where body shame comes from, how we've dealt with it in our own lives (and with our own kids), and real-life steps to overcome it. (Hint: it ain't about slapping a happy-ass thought over all of it.) None of us comes out of the womb embarrassed by our chubby stomachs or wishing we had thinner thighs. We learn that shit. Usually from people who love us. And they don't necessarily do it on purpose. They're likely trying to protect us in a society that bombards us with the message that being thin is the only thing that makes a woman “worthy.” It's my deepest desire that every woman examines her body shame and does the work to overcome it so we can stop passing this bullshit on. But this isn't only good for the next generation. It's also for YOU. Whatever your body goals are -- to lose weight, to get off medications, to increase your strength -- freeing yourself from body shame will get you there faster and help you feel as amazing as you deserve every step of the way.
