    The “Myth Busters” Series In this week's episode we are chatting all about kids and nutrition by busting the myth that “kids today aren't eating enough healthy foods.” As Mom's ourselves, we know that one of the biggest stressors on parents today is how to feed their children so we are explaining the psychology behind this fear and pressure and interviewing the RD's of Sunny Side Up Nutrition, Anna Lutz, MPH, RDN, LD and Elizabeth Davenport, MPH, RDN, LD @sunnysideupnutrition.   Feeding our children becomes our primary goal as soon as the child is born, so it is natural that parenting begins with this obsession of how, what, and how much our children are eating. Feeding our baby is also a form of attachment bonding for both the child and parent and a parental instinct absolutely takes over when we suddenly become insanely preoccupied with our children's input and output (remember having to track number of wet diapers in the hospital??) This natural, survival instinct ignited in parents combined with a culture obsessed with health and beauty and longevity, makes the perfect recipe for wanting to be perfect in how we feed our children. We find that this fear is mostly from the parents worried that they are not doing a good job or are projecting their own insecurities about food or their body onto their kids.     The “Myth Busters” Series While we love chatting about the more generalized diet culture messaging, our clinical work and passion is in the treatment of Eating Disorders. We are passionate about helping bust stereotypes of Eating Disorders in order to help all people get the care they deserve and help providers become more proficient in their treatment approaches. The myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “eating disorders only happen to thin white women” and interviewing psychotherapist Nichomi Higgins, LMFT for further exploration of the harm perpetuated by this myth in society and treatment settings. We are taking a look at how healthism is rooted in white supremacy and how this white centered definition of health and nutrition is harmful due to its lack of awareness of all cultural food beliefs and by the definition of what is a disordered relationship with food. Eating Disorders occurs in everyone b/c everyone has to have a relationship with food to survive. This, in addition to a diet culture centered in the definition of the white beauty ideal as well as a society rooted in racism and oppression of so many bodies, perpetuates a complex relationship with food.     The “Myth Busters” Series In this episode we are going to be busting a myth surrounding the impact of racism on body liberation and healthism. There is no body liberation and acceptance without all bodies being free to exist without prejudice, so anti-racism, and acknowledging the privileges you hold, are crucial topics to always be centered in the body acceptance conversation. Today’s myth that we are busting is “there is no hierarchy of bodies,” or the thought that, even if there is, “I am colorblind and I accept all bodies.” Now, we are two white podcast host’s so we acknowledge that our white privilege and lack of lived experience of being on the receiving end of racism definitely does not render us able to cover this topic effectively. So we are honored and thrilled to have our guest, Christyna Johnson, RD @encouragingRD join us to bust this myth! We highlighted the concept of how colorblindness and denial of inherent racism have continued to allow people to ignore racial discrimination, which continues to harm and impact people experiencing both macro and microaggressions as a result of the color of their skin.     The “Myth Busters” Series   Oh, exercise. It’s kind of a curse word we mutter at times, and other times it’s a declaration of self care. We all have a complicated relationship with exercise thanks to an appearance obsessed culture, so today’s myth that we are busting is: “Exercise is for weight loss! So, If I’m not going to lose weight, I don’t want to exercise!”  So we are going to chat a little bit about how we hear this myth express itself and then we are welcoming body positive fitness instructor Holly Max @fatbarrebabe to help us bust this myth even more!   Since guilt and shame are common themes in all of the most commonly expressed myths about exercise, we knew we had to help bust this myth by neutralizing exercise, or joyful movement as we prefer to call it, so that we can get it back to the root. Exercise is a celebration of your body, not a punishment or a way to change your body. By shifting the goal from external change to internal motivation of mental health clarity or de-stress or, gasp, FUN, we lose any expectations on ourselves and allow movement to connect us to ourselves.     The "Myth Busters Series"   In this episode we are busting a myth about how pervasive the beauty industry is and how it can impact our relationship with our bodies and our self worth. We do a lot of episodes on busting myths about diets or food rules, but what about all those fancy words like “wellness industry?” and “but it’s a lifestyle change?” as well as all the products we are constantly being sold to change our appearance. So this week we are busting the myth that “we are not selling beauty products, we are selling a lifestyle change!”   While the diet industry can be easy to spot due to its primary focus being weight loss, the wellness or lifestyle industry is extremely varied: it includes lotions, face products, makeup, fitness clothes, vitamins, supplements, and the list goes on. As we navigate people’s MLM pitches, influencer’s product advertisements, or pop up ads on social media, with the underlying message that using their products will buy you a level of health and wellbeing, the difficult part to discern is what is true and what is not? What is fake advertising, what is new found science, and do we even need any of these products? Is the bottom line messaging of the wellness industry the same as the diet industry in that we live in a culture obsessed with beauty, bodies, sexuality, and appearance and whether it’s a diet or a face cream, they are all selling the same thing: change your body, feel better.     The "Myth Busters" Series A part of body acceptance (especially for Mom’s) is grappling with wondering if we are sexy or attractive and feeling confident in our bodies as sexual beings. So the myth we are busting in this week’s episode is “I cannot be sexually confident if I am not body confident.” We truly believe that all bodies are sexy BUT we also believe that to feel sexy or to be sexually confident isn’t actually about your body at all - it’s much more about a general sense of body attunement, knowing your body's needs and wants, and having radical body liberation and body neutrality. So we are going to share our thoughts on this myth and then we are interviewing Amber Allen, LMFT.   We believe that body image starts in the mind, not the body. Therefore, when we are able to heal from the negative societal messaging that we have internalized about our bodies, we are able to be more mindful about what feels best for us and attuned with not only our bodies but our partners bodies and the connection, as well.     The "Myth Busters" Series In this episode we are talking about all the myths surrounding pregnancy and weight gain because, let’s face it, once you become pregnant - your body suddenly becomes open to LOTS of discussion from other people. It’s the cultural norm, in America at least, that pregnancy and weight gain go hand in hand in multiple conversations. How much you should gain, how quickly you lose it, how quickly you get that pre baby body back - the pressure is on in our diet culture. So the myth we are busting today is…….”everyone should gain the recommended weight range during pregnancy!” We will give you our thoughts on the origins of this myth and then we are excited to welcome Lynette Broom, RD to help us explore how narrowing a healthy pregnancy down to weight gain ignores the fact that all bodies are susceptible to complications from conception to post birth due to genetic factors or other health measures such as access to resources, prenatal care, support during childbirth, and mental health. And yet, our typical diet culture narrows all of these factors down to how many pounds you gain as your baby grows inside of you. This is harmful and anxiety producing for any parent to be.     The “Myth Busters” Series This week we are diving into why the commonly used BMI scale is outdated and harmful by busting the myth that “the BMI is an effective measuring tool for health.” We cover the history of the Body Mass Index (BMI), which was created 200 years ago by studying a small group of white European men and then creating a tool that measured fit ness in order to categorize the population and prove that white males were a superior species during the height of race science. In this episode, we go deeper into the history of the BMI creation, it’s racist roots, and explain how it became mainstream in our society today. We interview social and health psychologist Dr Jeffrey Hunger on how the BMI scale and weight stigma negatively impact people. We offer tools for families to use in their home to decrease weight stigma and ways to advocate for yourself and your children at the doctor’s office if BMI and weight is a focus of the medical care. The bottom line is that BMI was never intended as a measure of individual body fat, build, or health (or be inclusive to different genders and races).     The "Myth Busters" Series Today we are unpacking the concept of healing a relationship with food and finding peace with food and your body by looking at anti diet messages from an angle of accessibility. There is no body liberation until all bodies are safe and there is no food freedom until all bodies are fed and nourished equally. Therefore, the myth we are busting in this week’s episode is: “healing one’s relationship with food simply means healing from diet culture and learning to honor your body.” It is imperative that the work in the eating disorder field and anti diet space always unpacks the limitations that so many face in their access to food, shines a light on food accessibility, and calls out the racism that is inherent in diet culture. We are honored to welcome Shelby Gordon @fit.flexible.fluid to this episode and help us discuss how simplifying anyone’s relationship to food - both from a fad diet perspective of “try this and you will lose weight,” to the anti diet perspective of “just honor your hunger and cravings” is a massive disservice to everyone who is learning their own, unique relationship with their body and food in a society with unequal access to food and a diet culture based on racist beauty ideals.     The “Myth Busters” Series This week we spent an entire episode on the term “intuitive eating.” We know it is quite the buzzword in the anti diet world today and is frequently used (and misused) on social media, so in this episode we are busting some of the common myths we hear about intuitive eating such as: “Intuitive eating means eat whatever I want, whenever I want it,” “If I give myself unconditional permission to eat, I will never stop,” and “Habituation means to binge on the food until I’m sick of it.” We are going to give you the official definition of intuitive eating from the book by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, give you a brief summary of the original message of intuitive eating and principles associated, and discuss how fear based thinking drives these myths. We are honored to have the amazing co-author herself, Evelyn Tribole, join us this week to bust these myths with us and remind us about how a relationship with food and a releasing of diet culture messaging and body fears is a key component to making peace with food!     The “Myth Busters” Series Today we are busting the age old diet myth that in order to manage your weight it’s a simple math equation of “calories in vs calories out,” or calories expended. The reason this myth is so popular is because it gives people a sense of control. By counting, calculating, tracking, and monitoring: BAM, the solution will be what they desire. The marketers sell the apps, the memberships, the programs by saying “come join us and we will make something complex more simple so you can find control since your relationship with food is confusing and chaotic.” But there are some major flaws in this approach that we unpack in this episode. We review the history of the word “calorie” and it’s origins in the field of industrial agriculture, explain metabolic compensation as well as what to do about food labels. We interview Vincci Tsui, RD @vinccird and she unpacks the science behind why calories work in a lab setting but do not translate to our bodies in simple math!     The “Myth Busters” Series This week we are busting the myth that “our bodies are supposed to stay the same weight, post puberty, throughout our whole life.” While this myth may seem easy to bust, it is extremely common to have the subconscious belief that our ideal body was in a previous tier of our lives. This belief leads us to treat our bodies as enemies that have betrayed us and keep us from true body acceptance. In this episode, we offer education on what happens to our height, weight and shape during puberty as well as in the life tiers that follow. We share from a dietetic and a therapeutic perspective on how we help our clients navigate busting this myth for themselves by sharing our philosophies on the changing body throughout the lifespan.     The “Your Story” Series In this week's episode with Isis Freeman-Dirkson we discuss how the many layers of who we are, in addition to the lived experiences we have due to social constructs, can impact our body trust. We explore the power in healing our body image through logical thinking of understanding our body’s genetic components and the lies of the media BUT….healing the trauma in the body is so hard. We discuss a concept called Wise Mind that is taught in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which is a therapeutic modality that teaches skills on how to handle tough emotions with less reactivity. DBT teaches that there are two parts of our brains: the logical side (the facts of a situation) and the emotional side (the feelings, assumptions, and fears arise from a situation). We find peace when we merge the two - we acknowledge our pain and our suffering AND we hold on to the knowledge of our genetic blueprint or life experiences that have impacted our body. It’s a constant merging of both facts and feelings so our brains and our bodies begin to work in unison to heal. Our conversation really brought home the idea that “body image starts in the mind, not the body.” Body image is a mental exploration of how we view ourselves and healing comes not from external change or validation, but from internal dialogue, self perception, and acceptance of our genes with a g and jeans with a j.     The “Your Story” Series This week we are sharing the story of Jen McLellan, known for her work in advocacy for plus size birth. We discuss this week how the stigmas that those in larger bodies receive in health care, and the lack of willingness from medical providers to see plus size bodies as beautiful, strong, worthy and equal to other bodies, leads to an increase in poor medical care. This can range from inappropriate touch, exaggerating statistics of high risk, making inappropriate recommendations of weight loss due to the doctor’s own bias or denial of natural childbirth.  Our theme in this season is understanding how our internal dialogue and core beliefs impact our body image and body story and we love how Jen spoke on this in her interview this week by sharing how she first had to own the mantra “I am worthy of good health care” in order to then advocate for herself to find and receive the health care that respected her body.     The Mom Bod Series We wanted to dedicate a short episode to our listeners to say a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts and send you into summer with a massive cheer: WEAR THE BATHING SUIT!! We know that most of the body positive, “wear the bathing suit” advocates are usually white women in thinner bodies - and that is not exactly helpful or reassuring for the vast majority of people who are living in marginalized bodies in a judgemental world. The reason why we still encourage bathing suit wearing, joyful moving, community gathering summer activities is because being connected to our bodies and each other is where true freedom in life lies. It is a privilege to enjoy activities that require bathing suits, so keeping our privileges in mind will help keep perspective when diet culture and societal norms start screaming otherwise. In this week’s episode we share the definition of body liberation by Jes Baker @themilitantbaker and give 3 quick tips to help Mom’s enter summer with body liberation.     The Mom Bod Series How many of you Mom’s are self-conscious of your stomach? Society loves to sell us the appeal of a flat stomach from a very young age, which makes belly acceptance a piece of body acceptance. Not only do our bellies soften as we age but our skin loses flexibility and, if we became Moms via pregnancy, our stomach has gone through some crazy changes! In this week’s episode we are going to discuss your belly from the outside, in - what you can see in your jeans and, if those jeans fit differently, how you can practice self-care and body acceptance. We cover four common concerns that people have with the external appearance of their changed belly and the science behind those visual changes: the “mom pooch” the impact of the Diastasis Recti the reasons behind our skin’s changed appearance we debunk the myth that you “should get your pre baby belly back!” We also interview Jasmin Steiner, self love advocate and personal trainer, on how she has learned to accept her changed belly by decreasing the value she put on her body’s appearance. She shares how she had to release her subconscious belief of her body being her contribution to society by realizing that she was “more than her body.” Our takeaway question is: If genetics hasn’t given you a flat stomach, then I want you to consider WHY you value that, where that message comes from, and what you are giving up in exchange for living in dissatisfaction with your belly. Our society blatantly sells women’s attractiveness in the form of a flawless, flat stomach with just a touch of abs and anything less than that is immediately sold ab workouts, one piece ruched bathing suits, and mom jeans. A significant piece of breaking the stigma of the Mom bod is accepting the softened abdomen. We cover four common concerns many people have with their bellies and give education and tips of what to do next! The four areas we discuss are: bloating and digestion the hormonal impact on our abdomen visceral vs subcutaneous belly fat we bust the myth that you can “melt” your belly fat. This episode is stock full of information and specific tips of how to heal your belly from the inside out. Culture and the “wellness culture” love to offer us fear filled stats about belly fat and it’s harm. As we discuss these facts, we hold the Health At Every Size mentality while offering biological information about abdominal fat to help you understand your body and the TRUE definition of health.
