From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Actually a very active lifeLife-long art lover Ted Pfohl of Little Falls wholeheartedly recommends that people see the work of Charles Gilbert Kapsner while it's on view at Studio Pintura Fine Art Gallery in the Northrup King Building in northeast Minneapolis. Kapsner is based in Little Falls but trained in Florence, Italy in the studio of Nerina Simi (1890-1987). The retrospective includes over 30 still lives, portraits and other works, gathered under the title of “Odyssey — A 50-Year Artist's Journey: Not a Still Life!” The show's run has been extended through Feb 8. Ted Pfohl muses on the odyssey of Kapsner's work: I can in all integrity state that I am captivated by the stories within the works of Master Artist Kapsner, a designation earned within and from his colleagues in the world of fine art. Today, he voyages within oil and charcoal. He has been at several harbors within fresco. He has created a monument of paintings honoring the five branches of the United States military. Each carefully chosen and curated piece provides glimpses into the creativity of a gifted helmsperson. There are flowers, bottles of wine, his wife — whom he calls Lady Catherine — still lives and portraits. As I was moving within the currents of the visuals before me, there were several times where my feet would not move as my gaze rested upon the piece before me.— Ted PfohlTickets to ParadiseJewelry artist and silversmith Jessica Prill of Faribault works across the street from the Paradise Center for the Arts, and she says the exhibits there are always a source of inspiration. She recommends taking in the new visual arts show, which opened this week and features painters Laura Andrews and Montana Becker as well as stained-glass artist Bob Vogel in the main gallery. Art by students of Bethlehem Academy will be featured in the Creger Gallery, which often features student work. There is an artist reception on Friday from 5-7 p.m., and the exhibit runs through Feb. 15. Speaking about the stained glass art of Bob Vogel of St. Peter, Jessica Prill says: [His work] blows my mind. He has done stuff with glass that I didn't know was possible. He has found a way to make it look like he's painting with glass. He uses the patterns in the glass like brush strokes. He does lamps, panels, fused glass: they're just incredible.— Jessica PrillRemember: They're on Thursday nightDana Drazenovich of St. Cloud loves live music, and she wants people to know about Monday Night Jazz, a band that has been performing jazz for 20 years in St. Cloud. Despite its name — a holdover from a previous location that was open on Monday nights — the sextet plays most Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Veranda Lounge in St Cloud. Dana says: I feel like Monday Night Jazz is just a gift to St. Cloud's music scene, because I'm sure it's introduced plenty of people to the genre, and it's probably even made fans out of people who might not have otherwise even heard jazz performed live. They take a lot from the Great American Songbook, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein. You'll hear songs like “All the Things You Are” and “Mood Indigo.” They throw in a few originals here and there, too. They've got drums, piano, bass, guitar, sax and trumpet, so it's a big, full sound. And if you're lucky, you'll get to hear guitar player and vocalist, Muggsy Lauer, scat. There's a lot of laughing between songs, a lot of joking back and forth and they just put out the tip jar and go.— Dana Drazenovich

The two go back and forth jokingly on this topic for a while and soon decide that a letter must be written to Lady Catherine, who, after all, gave Darcy that final confirmation that Elizabeth must love him. Elizabeth also writes to Mrs Gardiner, properly responding to her letter about Darcy's influence in Lydia and Wickham's marriage. A little time passes and the Collins' come to town, taking a break from their home, and more importantly escaping the wrath of Lady Catherine from Darcy's letter. Elizabeth is very happy to see that her family and friends are making a good effort to get to know Darcy, and though she is concerned about their behaviour, she is glad to see that Darcy doesn't think any less of her for these important people.

Bingley, wanting to be alone, suggests that they go on a walk together, and he, Jane, Kitty, Elizabeth, and Darcy walk off together. Kitty wants to call upon Maria Lucas, and stays with her, and Jane and Bingley, walk slower than Darcy and Elizabeth. Once alone, Elizabeth immediately thanks Darcy for his kindness in the Lydia and Wickham affair. Though slightly upset that Elizabeth found out, he tells her that it was not for his feelings for his family, but for his feelings for her, which have not changed since his last proposal. When Elizabeth says in reply that her feelings have wholeheartedly changed, a smile and warmth that becomes him, unveils Darcy's face. The two then talk about Lady Catherine's visit to both Elizabeth and Darcy; Darcy mentions that this interaction caused him to hope more than ever that Elizabeth had changed her mind about his proposal. He then goes to say that everything Elizabeth said about his behaviour was true, and that it caused him to take a proper look at himself in the mirror and change who he was. He was selfish, and ungentlemanly, and he needed to change. Elizabeth claims that she never intended to cause such a huge change in him and tells Darcy to never mention it again when he brings up the words that she used in her refusal of him. They then discuss his letter and how it too had a starting effect on changing Elizabeth's opinion of Darcy. They talk and walk together many miles, and soon realise that they need to head back to Longborne. At the hall, they part, and try to hide their happiness from the rest of the family for the time being.

She eventually concludes that the speculation must have come to Lady Catherine through the Collins' imagination after hearing about Jane's engagement to Bingley. The next morning Elizabeth is invited to follow her father into his library. He is holding a letter and at first, she believes it to be from Lady Catherine, telling him too to refuse any proposal from Darcy. He then goes on to explain to her that the letter tells him that he should congratulate her for a potential engagement of her own and explains that the letter is from Mr Collins. Mr Bennet then goes to read the letter allowed, and while poking fun at Lizzy, he eventually goes to joke at Mr. Collins believing that Mr Darcy will be proposing to her. He laughs out loud at this, believing Elizabeth to still dislike and even hate Darcy. Elizabeth tries to laugh with him, hoping that her father will not see through her, but she really does wish that her father didn't laugh at the idea of her marrying Darcy.

The door is opened by a servant and Lady Catherine de Bourge makes her way inside. She talks down to the whole family, and then asks Elizabeth to take a short walk with her into the grounds. Elizabeth is appalled at her behaviour, but follows, confused as to why she has come all of this way. When they are a little distance from the house Lady Catherine questions Elizabeth as to her relationship with her nephew Mr Darcy. She plainly and sharply asks whether she and Darcy are engaged. Confused, Elizabeth replies that she isn't, and Lady Catherine rages on saying that Darcy and his cousin, have been betrothed since birth and that if Darcy were to be engaged to Elizabeth, she is there to call it off, for the sake of her noble family. Elizabeth is very angry with the Lady, and all of her replies are justifiably snarky. Lady Catherine asks her one last time if she and her nephew are engaged, and then asks her, if Darcy were to propose, that she refuse him. Elizabeth refuses to do so, and leaves to head back to the house leaving Lady Catherine to rage behind her until she arrives at her carriage and sets off.

Pride and Prejudice Chapter 38/9 - Romantic Sleep Story with Stephanie Poppins . #prideandprejudice #stephaniepoppins #romance #sleepstory #asmrsleep Sleep stories with Steph These Bedtime Tales guarantee a smooth transition onto a great night's sleep Published by Neworld Books UK Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen was first published in 1813 and is a classic romantic novel set in early 19th-century England. The story revolves around the spirited Elizabeth Bennet and the proud Mr. Darcy, exploring the complexities of love, class, and social expectations. Against the backdrop of the English countryside and the drawing rooms of the landed gentry, Austen skillfully crafts a narrative that satirizes the societal norms of the time while portraying the individual growth and romantic entanglements of its characters. The novel is deeply embedded in the historical context of the Regency era, offering a keen insight into social hierarchy, marriage expectations, and gender roles of the time. Through Elizabeth's sharp wit and Darcy's initial aloofness, Austen presents a nuanced exploration of personal prejudices and the importance of self-awareness in matters of the heart. In this episode, Lady Catherine summons Mr and Mrs Collins and their guests to Rosings. Tonight, we shall read the final part to “Pride and Prejudice”, written by Jane Austen. This has been our longest running series as we started reading it way back in the summer of 2019. Welcome to all our newer listeners, and a sincere thank you to our listeners that have been following along throughout these four years. In the last episode, Darcy and Elizabeth take a long walk together alone. They are joyful to learn that they both would like to be married. Elizabeth discovers that she has Lady Catherine to thank for Darcy's visit, for she had told him of Elizabeth's refusal to promise not to accept him. Darcy also explains how her previous reproofs of him made him realize how rude and spoiled he had been. He made it his aim to show her he had changed. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Learn more about your ad choices. Elizabeth tells Jane of her conversation with Darcy. At first Jane is surprised - she didn't think Lizzie liked Mr. Darcy at all - but then overjoyed that her sister will be married to him. Darcy asks Mr. Bennett for Elizabeth's hand. Mr. Bennett is also surprised at this news - as he too thinks Lizzie does not like the man, but Elizabeth assures him she does and that this is what she wants. Elizabeth also tells her father it was Darcy who paid Wickham. Her father is delighted that he does not have to pay back his brother-in-law. Elizabeth tells Mrs. Bennett who is shocked and then beyond happy to know not only are three of her daughters being wed but that Lizzie will be wealthier than even Jane! Elizabeth asks Darcy when and how he came to love her. He cannot be sure when but he fell in love with her because of her spirit and mind. The news of the engagement is shared: Elizabeth writes to the Gardiners, Darcy to Lady Catherine, and Mr. Bennett to Mr. Collins. Mr. Bennet writes that though he knows Lady Catherine may be angered by Darcy denying marriage to her daughter, Collins should seek side with Darcy as he is more well off. Collins does and visits the family with congratulations.  Jane and Bingley move into an estate near Pemberley. The Bennet family visits often - especially Kitty who spends more time with her sisters and becomes a fine young woman. Mary stays at home with her parents. Lydia often overstays her welcome at the Bingleys, constantly asks Jane and Elizabeth for money (Elizabeth does oblige with her own savings), and moves around constantly. Georgiana and Elizabeth become close. Caroline Bingley has welcomed Jane to the family and, though disappointed in Darcy's marriage, is cordial to Elizabeth. Lady Catherine and Darcy eventually make amends and she visits Pemberley. The Jane Austen Podcast with Alison Larkin is a Realm production. Listen away. Tonight, we shall read the next part to “Pride and Prejudice”, written by Jane Austen. In the last episode, Elizabeth's father stuns her with his congratulations on her upcoming engagement. He reads a letter he received from Mr. Collins in which Elizabeth is cautioned not to go forward with an engagement to Darcy against Lady Catherine's wishes. Mr. Bennet thinks this is simply a ridiculous rumor because he is certain that Elizabeth hates Darcy and that Darcy is indifferent to her. Elizabeth fakes laughter to hide her embarrassment about her father's misjudgment while she privately wonders if her father might be on to something. Could she have overestimated Darcy's interest? A few days later, Darcy and Bingley visit Longbourn. They all go for a walk and Elizabeth and Darcy soon find themselves alone. Elizabeth cannot contain her gratitude any longer for all that Darcy suffered and sacrificed for Lydia. Darcy tells Elizabeth that he did everything for her. Darcy says his feelings for her have not changed since his rejected proposal. Elizabeth confesses that her feelings have significantly changed. Darcy is overjoyed. She tells her brother that when he finds Lydia, to make sure she marries Wickham (and to consult her on the wedding dress). Mr. Gardiner joins Mr. Bennett in London to search for the couple. Jane and Elizabeth read a letter from Lydia to Mrs. Foster. Rumors begin to reach the family of Wickham's debts due to gambling and his lavish lifestyle. The news reaches Mr. Collins who writes to the Bennet family, ensuring them that Lydia has ruined their reputation and any chance of their daughters marrying. Tonight, we shall read the next part to “Pride and Prejudice”, written by Jane Austen. In the last episode, soon after Jane accepts Bingley's marriage proposal, Lady Catherine De Bourgh makes a surprise visit to Elizabeth. She says almost nothing to Mrs. Bennet, coolly inspecting the rooms and property, then asks Elizabeth to take a walk. Lady Catherine rudely interrogates Elizabeth. She simply cannot believe that Darcy would choose Elizabeth as a wife, and thus, she thinks he must have been tricked by her. Elizabeth boldly asserts her freedom of mind and freedom from the class concerns of Lady Catherine. In doing so, Elizabeth suggests that individuals can define themselves regardless of class or social prejudices. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!

Chapter 57 lifts the veil on Elizabeth's anxious anticipation of inevitable consequences, following Lady Catherine's turbulent visit. She grapples with the potential repercussions of Lady Catherine's meddling, wary of the power the formidable aunt might exert over her beloved Mr. Darcy. The chapter bristles with suspense as it outlines the manoeuvres of Lady Catherine, braced against the backdrop of societal expectations and layered family dynamics. Austen toys with the themes of marriage and societal expectations, underscoring the paradox of passion versus propriety. As we enter Chapter 58, we are met with a surprising turn of events. Our listeners, no doubt, share in Elizabeth's half-expected disappointment that Mr. Darcy might not return. Elizabeth herself, ever the keen observer, navigates the scene with an encouraging balance of foresight, optimism, and practicality. In the prophetic conclusion of the chapter, Elizabeth, secure in Mr. Bingley's fondness for Jane, dreams of an imminent resolution, contingent only on the absence of the enigmatic Mr. Darcy. This foreshadows a compelling trajectory ripe with the potential of romantic fulfillment and familial happiness. The ensuing chapter sets the scene with a tension-filled introduction, as an unexpected lady of upper-crust echelon arrives at the Bennets'. The unanticipated entrance of Lady Catherine de Bourgh brings a bracing breeze from the higher rungs of society, carrying with it the fragrant aroma of intrigue and the potential for conflict - the kind that only a character of her haughtiness can sow.As Lady Catherine arrogantly asserts her familial authority with Elizabeth, it becomes clear that this encounter will force Elizabeth to display her highest courage, and her steadfast conviction in her self-worth. In the face of aristocratic disdain, Elizabeth's steadfastness of character begins to truly shine, heralding a battle between societal norms and personal conviction.

As we wander the grand halls and opulent rooms of Rosings, we witness, through Elizabeth's keen eyes and insightful mind, the intricate dance of wealth, rank, and polite conversation. Lady Catherine's grandeur, self-importance, and her authoritative tone in conversation sharply contrast with Elizabeth's simplicity and modesty. This intriguing interaction is enriched by subtle hints of tension, further enticing our curiosity. In the following chapter, we bid farewell to Sir William Lucas, leaving Mr. Collins and Charlotte to resume their usual routine. Elizabeth finds solace in her walks around the park and in her conversations with Charlotte, though Lady Catherine's constant, often intrusive, observations ensure that life at Hunsford is anything but dull. As Easter approaches, so does an unexpected excitement – the arrival of the aloof Mr. Darcy and his charming cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. Chapters thirteen and fourteen draw us into the Bennet home as unanticipated correspondence introduces a new character and stirs commotion within the family. But before we proceed, allow me to set the scene.Morning finds the Bennet family at breakfast, their daily routines interrupted by the announcement that a certain Mr. Collins, a stranger and a gentleman, would soon pay them a visit. The news is unexpected and leaves the Bennets abuzz with curiosity—as Mr. Bennet anticipates an entertaining encounter, Mrs. Bennet hastens preparations for a suitable dinner, and the daughters indulge fantasies about a potential suitor. However, when Mr. Collins' arrival does not bring a scarlet coat-wearing man, the youngest Bennet girls find him lacking. Mr. Collins, the heir to Longbourn, is thus introduced amidst an amusing scene of familial reactions. His arrival is followed in Chapter fourteen with a dinner, where his overzealous respect for his patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, stand out against Mr. Bennet's calculated humility. With keen observation and sardonic humour, Mr. Bennet pokes our guest with questions that unravel the unfeigned, if not absurd, persona of Mr. Collins, endearing us to another fascinating character in Jane Austen's colourful tapestry. By the chapter's conclusion, this clergyman's airs and his surprising aptness for flattery underpin a kind of ironic charm.
