TVC 681.2a: From January 2012: Television writer/producer Larry Brody takes Ed and his listeners behind the scenes of Police Story (NBC, 1973-1979), the Emmy Award-winning police anthology series created by Joseph Wambaugh and executive produced by David Gerber. Larry received one of his first breaks in television working with Gerber. Topics this segment include Gerber's peculiar mandate that discouraged writers on his shows from ever allowing characters to show any positive emotion. Joseph Wambaugh passed away Friday, Feb. 28 at the age of eighty-eight. Also in this segment: A remembrance of Gene Hackman, the Academy Award-winning actor who was found dead in his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, along with his wife Betsy Arakawa, on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
It's the end of Silver Surfer and we feel fine. Chris Hayner is with us to both turn back time and look forward into the unlikely Season 2 of this show that did exactly what it set out to do without ever actually being for anyone. Fare thee well, Norrin Radd. We hardly knew ye, even though ye would never shut up about yourself.
Ego tricks Derick into thinking this show is over, but Silver Surfer has just a little more insuffrability to burn.
Nate Runkel is with us to try and discuss Terrence Howard's descent into madness instead of Silver Surfer's descent into depression. The nerve of some people.
The Silver Surfer has appeared unto us and we will live in fear until he hath been vanquished. If such a circumstance be even possible. Also Rich Monahan is with us to help us speak normally after all this.

With the passing of musician Bobby Caldwell what's happening in the world of soul/R&B music. Is there anymore blue-eyed soul acts? Also, is it cheating to think about somone else....... while you're with your partner??
While on a scientific mission to explore the core of the galaxy, the Enterprise crew meets an enthusiastic satyr-like figure named Lucien, who offers to show them the magical world of his planet, Megas-Tu. But the celebratory mood takes an ominous turn when Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy encounter a powerful race of beings who put humanity on trial while also attempting to expose Lucien for being none other than the Devil himself. Up to this point, "The Animated Series" successfully packed a lot into its 24-minute running times while still feeling like vintage episodes of "Star Trek." But with "The Magicks of Megas-Tu," the producers and writer Larry Brody may have bitten off more than they could chew. The premise is ambitious and imaginative, but it's all over the place with too many ideas that are never fully explored. After all, how could they be in just 24 minutes? But in spite of itself, "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" manages to stick the landing in true Captain Kirk fashion with a message that ultimately feels like classic "Star Trek" after all. So, it doesn't always work, but when it does, it does so splendidly. The odds of a pilot script being sold and produced are incredibly small. What if you absolutely must see your story come to life? This week we meet Corinna Mendis, who despite having no film schooling or previous experience, independently produced and shot her own spec pilot! Corinna Mendis, a native New Yorker, grew up wanting to become an actress. When her parents threatened to cut her off, she put creative pursuits on a shelf, and dug herself in to university studies. Two bachelor's degrees and two Master's degrees later, she found she couldn't stop writing, especially about the trials and tribulations of the homeless population at a homeless center she volunteered at in Long Island, New York. She pursued books, classes, seminars, and any resource she could find, to learn about the television writing process, including classes with Larry Brody, author of Television Writing from the Inside Out. Rather than try to sell her pilot in script form, Corinna decided to produce it herself! With Larry's encouragement and support, she spent $25,000 of her own money to produce “Not In My Neighborhood,” a single camera half hour TV pilot shot in the same homeless shelter where she volunteered. Corinna learned a tremendous amount in the process… so much so, that she encourages anyone who is currently thinking about film school to consider instead following in her footsteps, and learning through doing. The entire pilot “Not In My Neighborhood” is available online: CLICK HERE Or, you can see a trailer for it here: CLICK HERE Corinna's Twitter: @CorinnaMendis Buy Gray's book for only $4.99! Larry Brody, Esq., Partner, Bryan Cave LLC, and Randy Zipse discuss the Cahill case on Multi-Generational Split Dollar. Since Morrissette in 2016, few concepts have caught the attention of high-end insurance producers like “multi-generational” or “discount” split dollar. Split dollar can be a powerful means of funding permanent life insurance for family business and estate planning. “Multi-generational” split dollar can be an effective way to use family wealth for long-term planning. While promoters have marketed multi-generational split dollar to pass along family wealth on a deeply discounted basis, others wonder if the purported benefits are too good to be true. The Cahill case, in large part, provides us with the IRS opinion on that question! Cahill is significant for those considering this concept. Larry and Randy discuss what the court said and what it did not. If you work with estate planning clients, you will not want to miss this podcast.
Randy Zipse’s podcast guest this week is Larry Brody, an exceptionally accomplished and well known expert on estate planning with a legal practice that focuses on planning for high net-worth individuals, using life insurance and non-qualified deferred compensation planning. Recent episodes of our podcast focused on the impact of the recent tax law changes for business owners. This episode is a detailed discussion of the impacts of changes for individuals. Some changes are minimal, others are significant and no one is better prepared to deliver a succinct analysis of this than Larry Brody.
The Senate version of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would modify the rules for determining the income tax basis of a life insurance or annuity contract in connection with a sale of the contract. In effect, the bill would reverse the guidance issued by the IRS in Rev. Rul. 2009-13. In this podcast, Larry Brody discusses the proposal. The provision is described at pages 140 through 143 of the Description of the Chairman's Mark of the Senate bill, which can be found at https://www.finance.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/11.9.17%20Chairman's%20Mark.pdf .
