The 80s have finally come to a close, and the decade's final moments did not disappoint. Join me as I discuss the envelope pushing antics of the Conner family on Roseanne, the "they're not lesbians, I promise" relationship between Kate & Allie, and the trauma we all experienced watching Life Goes On. I'll also crack wise about the comedy stylings of Wes Craven, stars yelling at audiences, and the decision making process that went into creating Small Wonder. Cheers!

[From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2022] On Episode 392 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with actor and tennis coach Christopher Crabb about how he went from both competing on the court and acting at the highest level to coaching famous celebrities. Chris is a tennis coach in Los Angeles with an A-list rolodex of clients. His tennis students include George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Kline, Elle Fanning, Steve Carell, Pete Wentz from Fallout Boy, Dakota Fanning and Jeff Probst. Chris tutored Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar-nominated role in the film "Chaplin," for which Chris also served as tennis coordinator. He began acting at the age of eight and has starred in many commercials, movies and series including the remake of "A Christmas Carol", "Danger Bay", "Life Goes On", "Rebel Highway", and many more. Chris was a highly-ranked junior tennis player and turned pro at the age of 16. He has defeated grand slam champions Michael Chang and Jim Courier. On the show, you'll learn how Chris developed his skills in tennis and acting and how he managed to do both at the highest level, the biggest challenges he faces when teaching celebrities, his unique green jacket approach of coaching, the biggest mistakes that amateur tennis players make, why players don't play well during competition vs. practice, and much more! "Life Goes On" whether we are ready or not. Some things we choose, and other things are chosen for us. In these days, we have become a bunch of whiners instead of workers. The sense of "entitlement has become the theme of the day. But, in spite of it all, there is HOPE!

Send me a messageWelcome to the show, my name is Nathan Robertson-Ball and today's episode is slightly different from some of the others. It's with author and journalist Megan Maurice, about her new book Life Goes On that is her account - told through her own experience and that of several others - about life after a cancer diagnosis.Something I enjoy and want to explore through Finding Nature is how other people do change, how they grow and evolve from the person they were to who they are now and where they're ideally trying to get to. Most of the time we get to choose this, the privilege of having options to consider and make decisions about. Other times though we don't get that choice and we have to deal with the world giving us a hand that isn't one we want to take, from the sudden death of a loved one, a redundancy, the ending of a relationship, even the dreaded but much less significant call from daycare that your toddler's unwell and needs to be picked up. We all have stories of grief, loss and pain in our lives, most of which are invisible and unknown to those around us.Megan's book Life Goes On explores in beautiful detail the experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis as a 36 year old. Suddenly choices were removed and the next stages of her life were filled with and overwhelmed by the medical process that followed. Doctors, scans, treatments and therapies. What stood out to me about Megan's story though was how this diagnosis and her subsequent experiences tore through her sense of identity, her own understanding of her life and what was to come and the stories she had told herself about herself. The relevance of this conversation to me is that all of us go through these periods in our lives. We experiences themselves at some point, sudden and tragic events happen to our family members, friends and colleagues, yet so much of what we need to, have to and will do is just move on, often suffering in solitude or isolation away from the fears - real or perceived - of those around us.I'm very fortunate that I've not received an acute medical diagnosis, but it's likely that I will. I've suffered terrible losses and experience grief about what was been lost and cannot be retrieved. The immediate aftermath is usually surreal - how life was can no longer be, it's forever different, and that process of adjustment is often a rocky one, taking time, work, help, care and acceptance. While this chat isn't the usual how to do sustainability episode, it very much touches on similar themes that are familiar in professional contexts - challenge, loss, the need for patience and acceptance, the necessity of asking for help. Above all though, we all deal with grief, loss and pain in our lives as people, which is who we are under our professional identities. This chat with Megan was an honour for me, as was reading Life Goes On. I recommend getting yourself a copy as I suspect you'll also resonate and relate to parts of her experience like I did, regardless of whether you've experienced a serious health scare like she did.I hope you take something meaningful from this conversation. It helped me better appreciate the gifts in my life and bring back front and centre for me that often the most difficult periods of my life can be viewed now as times of valuable personal metamorphosis that only great pain could bring about.Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. Today we're talking about the Cheers finale as well as series finales in general. What do we think the best series finale was? How many people tuned into the Cheers finale vs. how many tuned in to the Game of thrones finale? Some other note-worthy TV sitcoms that ended this month include Designing Women, Life Goes On, Quantum Leap, SAVED BY THE BELL, and The Wonder Years. Spoiler - someone wins this week of trivial pursuit questions, so listen up to see who is now in the lead. Awesome sauce.
Cheers, Saved by the Bell, and several other shows effectively end the 1980s on television. Sharon Stone is naked again, while The Fast and the Furious officially becomes a completely different, and better, franchise. Meanwhile, the Hangover series goes out with a dark bang, Hot Shots goes out with a war, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer leaves us with one of TV's best finales. Plus Flappy Bird is born, Jim Carrey is God, and more so than any other Thirty Twenty Ten episode, watch the media landscape drastically change throughout one of our most jampacked episodes ever!

Last night, I ate Chinese food and read my fortune - it basically said Life Goes ON – Being an overanalyzer, I thought about that throughout the night and wanted to talk about the sentiment - some people consider it defeatist, but is it? Going Live with Toolman Tim on his show at 12:30 today: https://youtu.be/odWS8cSuTGs Tales from the Prepper Pantry Canned beef from the webinar - about 12 lbs Pickled Okra Using up relishes from 2020 Making cheese this week: cheddar and chevre or feta Frugality Tip Seeking yours - the purpose of this section. (The bag of bags) Operation Independence Webinar was a screaming success - thank you Mama Sauce, Lettie and Tactical (Seeking a better camera set up) Main topic of the Show: Life Goes On - Defeatist or Insightful? Failure is not defeat unless you stop trying - in other words Life goes on… Have you ever been in a really tight place, and someone said to you Life Goes On? And you get mad because it is A: heartless, and B: defeatist? I know I have….but is it? Life goes on – defeatist view Cant improve the situation Your problems dont matter The person saying it is an asshole You are powerless You don't matter Life goes on: the facts Life indeed goes on (scorched earth, building left to become forest, etc) You problems, in fact, don't matter (And that is a good thing) The person saying it might be an asshole - or they may be wanting to encourage you to keep trying Which means you do matter - they cared enough to listen in the first place It is not all about you (the world) and that is a good thing Failure is not defeat unless you stop trying (Life goes on) - same sentiment two spins - let's talk about spin and the stories we tell ourselves If you are alive, you can still do something, do good things, make progress so no matter what just happened, you at least still have your life Looking backward at the problem, situation, or defeat for any other reason than to put it emotionally behind you and learn from it is investing time in defeat rather than in forward momentum So life goes on… And since that was a short overanalysis, we had a second fortune: Cooking is easy. Doing the dishes is the hard part. I really love this one. Have you ever cleaned dishes behind a chef? It can take hours. (BRETT Story) But what happens when you don't do the dishes? Annoyance of having to clean before you cook or eat later The smells Health problems The mess Figurative overanalysis The concept of finish (and my struggles with it) Eating frogs Do Hard Things A final thought: Cooperation works better. Combined across the Emmys, Grammys, Olivier and Tony Awards, Patt LuPone has 14 nominations and six wins. Her resume includes 27 Broadway credits, including Eva Perón in the original Broadway production of Evita (1st Tony Award), Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, Noises Off, Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy (2nd Tony Award), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, War Paint, Working, Oliver!, The Robber Bridegroom, and The Beggar's Opera. In London she starred in the original casts of Les Misérables, The Cradle Will Rock, Sunset Boulevard, and the West End revival of Company. She also has a long and illustrious career across TV and film, with credits including Driving Miss Daisy, Frasier, Will and Grace, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Glee, American Horror Story, Girls, Penny Dreadful, and of course, Life Goes On. She's a voiceover artist, a cabaret performer, a mom, and performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic, all of which mean you can find her singing across 22 different albums. Patti LuPone was the first American to ever win an Olivier Award, has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, and can now be seen on Broadway in the revival of Company. LuPone recalls her first introduction to the musical Gypsy (playing Louise) in high school, speaking candidly about not understanding the play at the time, and shares how she was initially banned from participating in any of Arthur Laurents work before going on to win a Tony Award for playing Rose. She reflects on going to the “dark side” a lot when COVID shut the industry down, noting it wasn't that she couldn't perform but rather that she had nothing to fill that void with, and shares how close-knit and supportive the cast and crew of Company is as a result of the collective trauma and uncertainty they faced together once they resumed rehearsals. LuPone also speaks about the importance of doing her work completely in the rehearsal room, allowing her and the audience to both play and relax once she is onstage, and shares why she looks at the audience every single night. In this episode, we talk about: Being in one of the first-ever students in Juilliard's school of drama in the 70's Her Maryilyn Monroe impression at 3 years old What it is about laughter from an audience that brings her joy What she calls the “Italian blast”, and not having a filter Her “Andrew Lloyd Webber memorial pool” Resenting producers or anybody that underestimates the audience's intelligence Connect with Patti: Twitter: @pattilupone IG: @pattilupone Web: pattilupone.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com.
