I had so much fun reading psychologist Paul Eastwick's book Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection. A lot of his work reveals the enduring myths that are engrained in our culture and our minds about attraction, compatibility, gender differences, and relationships—and why these myths have been somewhat mistakenly connected to evolutionary psychology. The way he debunks these myths is so helpful, and also very entertaining, I think, whether you are single, dating, or in a relationship. Today, he shares some great hot takes on the apps; the significance (or not!) of first impressions, what's behind compatibility and lasting attraction, how same-sex friends work, infidelity risk factors—and much more. What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9For we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building. Fellow Christians (regardless of denomination) - Let us come reason together Unity of the Body of Christ for His work The enemy loves to divide. “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity” - Rupertus Meldenius Key Text: 1 John 4 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood. God's Love and Ours.7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. How do Christian men discern truth without becoming tools of deception or hatred? God demands we test the spirits (v.1) Confess Christ rightly (v.2-3 Listen to apostolic truth (v.6) Love as evidence of knowing God (v.7-21). Confronting the two ditches History (Brief Overview) Early Church: Mixed – some respect for Jewish roots, but supersessionism/replacement theology grew No longer Jew nor Gentile, but the Church and the world Justin Martyr, later hardened replacement theology Led to disdain, pogroms (violent, mob-driven attacks—typically riots involving looting, assault, rape, murder, and destruction of property—targeted at a specific ethnic or religious groups.) Martin Luther's later writings (On the Jews and Their Lies) exemplify tragic failure of love. Reformation/ Puritans: Varied; some future hope for Jewish people (pre-Darby). John Nelson Darby (1800s, Plymouth Brethren) systematized dispensationalism: distinct Israel/Church track pre-trib rapture literal futurist readings Popularized via Scofield Reference Bible (1909). Fueled 20th-century evangelical support for Israel. Zionist movement: Jewish political nationalism (Theodor Herzl, late 1800s) responded to European antisemitism. Christian Zionism often overlapped but with eschatological motives. Scofield influence: Shaped views of unconditional land promises. Post-Holocaust: Shifts toward Philo-Semitism (the admiration, respect, or obsession with Jewish people, culture, or history, often by non-Jews) in reaction to Church failures, but some swung to uncritical political allegiance. Modern swing: Newly Reformed / postmillennial / reconstructionist circles reacting against shallow dispensationalism by over-correcting into ethnic suspicion or outright antisemitism. Examples: Holocaust minimization “Zionist Occupied Government" echoes Treating all Jewish influence as cabal-like. This is not discernment – it's another false spirit. Practical tests for Discerning information from 1 John 4 (This is the point): Does the source confess Christ preeminent - Love the Lord your God with everything or push fear/hate/nationalism as gospel? Does it promote love for neighbors? Prayer for enemies? Cross-reference history, primary sources, multiple views – not echo chambers. To "Reformed" Bros: Opposition to dispensational errors is fine; becoming ethnic scoffers is apostasy from apostolic love. To Zionists: Israel's existence isn't carte blanche; critique policies Biblically. This is one area - lots of other ditches Women's role / value Poet and Warrior Both: Media profits from division. Dr. Adam Dorsay hosts UC Davis psychology professor Dr. Paul Eastwick to discuss his book "Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection" and what research shows about attraction and relationship longevity. Eastwick contrasts stated mate preferences with what predicts attraction and satisfaction in real interactions, highlighting the importance of feeling supported and subjectively finding a partner sexy, even long-term. They discuss how vulnerability, listening, and reciprocal disclosure can spark early intimacy, and how an evaluative “shopping” mindset can undermine dating. Eastwick argues humans are a pair-bonding, often serially bonding species, citing motivated biases that favor current partners and genetic evidence suggesting low historical nonpaternity rates (~1%). They cover mixed-gender friendships as predictors of later relationship formation, relationship “construction” around shared elements, research on consensual non-monogamy (including jealousy/compersion differences), similarities across same- and mixed-gender couples with contextual challenges, and the value of grace during breakups.00:00 Welcome to SuperPsyched00:28 Why Attraction Matters02:20 Traits That Predict Love03:56 Support and Desire05:28 Keeping Sex Alive07:57 Vulnerability Is Attractive10:00 Dating Without Judgment13:59 Monogamy Myths17:09 Biases That Protect Bonds19:47 Jealousy and Infidelity21:48 Humans as Pair Bonders24:45 Infidelity Context25:19 Mixed Gender Friends29:16 Relationship Growth Tips33:31 Jealousy And Polyamory38:29 Same Sex Relationship Data40:12 Dating Apps To Groups43:47 Graceful Breakups Skill47:30 Final Thanks And WrapHelpful Links:Paul Eastwick, PhDBonded by Evolution Book
In dating, finding “the one” might be easier if you stop assuming “the one” will be a perfect match. Paul Eastwick is professor of psychology at UC Davis, where he serves as the head of the Social-Personality Psychology program and the director of the Attraction and Relationships Research Laboratory. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why we need to look past imperfections when choosing a mate, why what we know about evolutionary biology has been exaggerated, and the pros and cons of dating apps. This episode of the Proper True Yarn Podcast brings two absolute weapons into the studio, Beau Jones and Jordan Abbey Young, for a long-form yarn about friendship, acting, and how careers sometimes start in the strangest possible ways. Both Beau and Jordan grew up as station kids in North Queensland and the Northern Territory, chasing an acting dream that confused their families and tested their commitment early. Their paths eventually crossed on the Gold Coast through short films, indie projects, and pure chaos, including the first time they properly met when one of them was literally playing a homeless bloke in a wheelie bin during a film shoot in Beenleigh.Beau talks about boarding school on the Gold Coast and studying acting at the New York Film Academy, before returning to Australia to grind through low-budget productions and short films. Jordan shares his own journey, bouncing between stations, sheds, couches, and castings while chasing opportunities wherever they appeared. The episode really opens up when the boys break down landing roles in Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, their first major professional acting job. They tell the full story of beating thousands of auditions, getting flown to Kingaroy, and immediately celebrating their “big break” by getting completely blind the night before a freezing early-morning call time. What follows is an all-time hangover yarn. Missed alarms, panic showers, vomiting into a backpack full of scripts and wardrobe, and still somehow surviving a full day of filming without getting sent home. It's funny, brutal, and painfully honest about how unforgiving the industry can be when you're just getting started.Beyond the chaos, the episode digs into shared rural values, persistence over polish, and what it means to back yourself without a safety net. It's about timing, luck, and finding your people along the way.If you're into Australian film stories, behind-the-scenes acting yarns, regional blokes chasing creative careers, or raw conversations about getting your first real break, this episode delivers.Loose, honest, and full of proper laughs. A proper true yarn about friendship, timing, and earning your shot.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The dating industry profits by exploiting your insecurities. Bonded by Evolution author Paul Eastwick brings science to prove that even you can land love!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1309What We Discuss with Paul Eastwick:The concept of "mate value" — the idea that everyone is a fixed number on a scale of attractiveness — is largely unsupported by science. Studies show people only agree about who's attractive roughly 65% of the time, meaning a full third of the equation is purely subjective. Your "score" depends heavily on who's doing the scoring.Dating apps force people into artificial filtering habits — like screening for height or income — not because those traits genuinely matter in face-to-face attraction, but because users are drowning in options and need some way to narrow the pile. In speed-dating studies, traits like height barely register as factors when people are actually interacting in person.Your romantic partner likely sees you through a generous — and scientifically real — perceptual lens. Partners in happy relationships tend to rate each other as more attractive than outsiders would, and they instinctively "derogate alternatives," meaning they perceive potential rivals as less appealing. These biases aren't delusion — they're relationship glue. The "evo script" — a set of ideas spun out of 1990s evolutionary psychology — overstates gender differences in attraction. Research shows that when men actually meet ambitious women face-to-face, they find them more attractive, not less. The gendered "money-for-looks" tradeoff doesn't hold up either — women trade resources for attractiveness just as often as men do.Compatibility isn't something you discover on a profile — it's something you build in person. Give potential partners at least three dates in three different contexts, use fewer filters, and treat early dating less like an evaluation and more like a collaboration. My guest today is Paul Eastwick, a social psychologist and professor at the University of California, Davis, whose research focuses on attraction, romantic relationships, and the gap between what we think we want and what actually unfolds in real life. His latest book, Bonded by Evolution, challenges a lot of common assumptions about dating and compatibility. In this episode, we explore: Why many of our inherited “rules” about attraction—like mate value, having a type, or alpha/beta dynamics—don't hold up in real life How attraction is far more dynamic and often grows over time rather than appearing instantly The gap between what people say they want in a partner and who they actually choose How context (social environments, timing, even a first kiss) plays a powerful role in shaping connection What dating apps get wrong—and why real-life networks and shared spaces matter more than we think How loosening rigid expectations allows attraction and relationships to unfold more naturally Thank you all for checking out the episode! Dating apps make it seem like you can swipe your way to the perfect partner. But attraction isn't something we can fully predict from profiles. It emerges through interaction. So what happens when we try to optimize something that's inherently unpredictable? In this episode, we break down the psychology of online dating and how to approach it more effectively. I am joined once again by Dr. Paul Eastwick, a Professor of Psychology at UC Davis, where he serves as the head of the Social-Personality Psychology program. He hosts the popular podcast Love Factually with his long-time colleague, Eli Finkel, where they analyze rom-coms and romantic dramas from the perspective of relationship science. Paul is also author of the new book Bonded by Evolution. Some of the specific topics we explore in this episode include: Why might using multiple dating strategies improve your odds? Can AI predict attraction better than we can ourselves? How accurate are first impressions on dating apps? Is there an optimal timeline for meeting in person after matching? What strategies lead to healthier online dating experiences? You can check out Paul’s website to learn more about his work. Got a sex question? Most of us think we know what we're looking for in a partner. We have a “type,” a mental checklist, and the belief that if someone checks enough boxes, everything else will fall into place. But decades of research suggest that attraction and compatibility don't work that way. In this episode, we'll unpack how attraction really unfolds and why chemistry is so hard to predict. My guest is Dr. Some of the specific topics we explore in this episode include: What's the link between what we say we want and who we actually fall for? Do we really have a “type” when it comes to romantic partners? Why is it so hard to predict whether two people will feel a spark? How can we improve our chances of finding a compatible partner? How much does long-term satisfaction depend on initial compatibility? You can check out Paul’s website to learn more about his work. Got a sex question? Why This Episode MattersLisa Laird shares the story of America's oldest distilling family and how Laird's helped shape the history of Applejack in the United States. This conversation connects cocktails, New Jersey history, and the survival of a multi-generation family business through Prohibition, downturns, and the modern cocktail revival.Mark and Francis get deep into what makes a Jack Rose great, why ingredients matter, and how Applejack found its way back into serious cocktail culture. One of the most compelling parts of the episode is Lisa's account of how her family bought the company back and preserved the legacy for future generations. The BanterMark Pascal and Francis Schott open the show with an unexpectedly passionate tasting and review of Girl Scout cookies before turning to a far more adult subject: Applejack, cocktails, and New Jersey history. The ConversationLisa Laird Dunn, ninth-generation owner of Laird & Company, joins the show to talk about the Jack Rose, the history of Applejack, and her family's place in the story of American spirits. Along the way, she explains how the category rose, fell, and returned with the cocktail renaissance, and why products like Laird's Bonded and Applejack 86 each have a distinct place behind the bar. The conversation becomes especially moving when Lisa shares how her family risked everything to buy the company back and keep it family owned.Timestamps0:00 – Banter: Girl Scout cookies, Tagalongs vs. Thin Mints, and a call for listener opinions6:20 – Lisa Laird joins: The Jack Rose: origin stories, cocktail lore, and why this drink matters13:40 – The dark years for Applejack, turning off the stills, and the return of classic cocktails20:10 – The cocktail revival, distributor resistance, and how demand came roaring back24:20 – The products and how their use has evolved over time34:00 – Lisa's family buys the company back: risk, legacy, and carrying Laird's into the 10th generation44:00 – What is means to “jack” a spirit50:00 – How Laird's survived Prohibition53:30 – How Catherine Lombardi got booze for her wedding.Guest BioLisa Laird Dunn is the ninth-generation owner of Laird & Company, America's oldest distilling family and the makers of Laird's Applejack. Our latest side quest is sure to appeal to all swipes—er, types! When we first discussed Reigns: The Witcher, the new “swipe 'em up” mobile game from CDPR, Nerial and Devolver Digital, we failed to answer one very important question: which member of the Whiskey with Witcher crew can survive for the longest in the game after drinking copious amounts of alcohol? Well, you're about to find out! Recorded a few days after Reigns: The Witcher's release, we each take a spin until three things become clear. First, we probably should have practiced a lot more. Second, battling is really hard when you're drinking cask-strength whiskey. And three, this is the wildest episode we've recorded in quite some time. Enjoy!
Romantic relationships are something uniquely human — we form attachments and perceive compatibility in ways no other species does. So what explains the idiosyncratic preferences people have for one potential partner over another? And why have popular conceptions based on evolutionary psychology been wrong about when it comes to how humans choose their mates? Psychology professor Paul Eastwick is the head of UC Davis' Social-Personality Psychology program and the director of the Attraction and Relationships Research Lab. His book, Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection, challenges society's core assumptions about attraction and compatibility, and presents new findings on the key to long-lasting commitment. He also co-hosts the podcast, Love Factually, with his colleague Eli Finkel, which explores the science of relationships through film. Paul and Greg discuss how a distorted view of evolutionary psychology has perpetuated inaccurate ideas about dating and relationships, the effect online dating has had on intensifying competition and gender differences, and some key tips for building strong, long-lasting connections. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: Why dating apps can't replace real romantic connections 39:57: The apps make you think like a romantic connection is right there. Like maybe it will be tonight. I would encourage people instead to think about what is it like just to hang out with other people and give the romantic possibilities some time to fall out of those networks a little bit more organically, a little bit more naturally. It takes a while. Like it can take quite a long time, especially like if we haven't been tending to our networks recently, but nevertheless, like this is at least an approach that people should be supplementing with their online dating if, if they're going to continue to use the apps. Why are some couples happy and some are not? 22:46: Compatibility, how well two people fit together. That is probably explaining the lion's share of why some couples are happy and some couples are not. Rather than this idea that like, oh, you got a good long-term partner, that's probably not the best way to think about it. Compatibility is something couples build together 25:17: Compatibility can be many, many things. It can be like, we seem to get along and coordinate well. It could be about our easy flowing conversation, but it also could be about how we get through the day. And often that's what relationships are. It's an interdependent web of goals and preferences and values that two people negotiate together. And it's very hard for people to know how that negotiation is going to turn out until they really dig in and start to try to do it. The evolutionary mismatch behind modern dating 45:44: What I think is deeply ironic is that some of the earliest evolutionary psychological findings happened to be the ones that reinforced the view that really fits this hierarchy idea, the mismatch component of it. So it's like, I love the idea of the evolutionary mismatch, thinking deeply about the environment in which we evolved. My problem is like a lot of the early ev psych ideas actually weren't doing that all that, all that well, that in reality, right? We evolved in small groups. You got to know a limited number of potential partners. There were going to be other people involved trying to shape, you know, who you spent time with and who you got to meet. It wasn't this dramatic marketplace of inequality. The current Kavenz VHP bikes come with a sticker that says “Made from aluminum: we give a shit,” a nod to the recyclability and (purportedly) lower environmental impact of aluminum compared to carbon fiber. But Kavenz is also openly developing the next-generation VHP platform — and it's using carbon tubes bonded to aluminum lugs. So, why change materials, especially when aluminum is such a big part of the brand's image and ethos? Why document the whole process for the public, rather than developing a new bike in secret, as most brands do? Is the environmental impact of aluminum even really lower? We sat down with Kavenz founder Giacomo Großehagenbrock to discuss all that and much more.RELATED LINKS:Blister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideBLISTER+ Get Yourself CoveredTOPICS & TIMES:Founding Kavenz & Documenting Frame Design (2:41)Why Update the VHP? "She's a ten to me and that's the part that matters." — Paul EastwickIf it's Valentine's Day, we must be talking about love. Paul Eastwick studies attraction and relationships at UC Davis, and his new book Bonded by Evolution takes aim at the "old science" that treated romance like a competitive market where everyone gets assigned a number. The incels, of course, ran with that research to compound their paranoia about the other sex. Eastwick says they got it wrong—and so, with the exception of Paul Eastwick, did most academics. When two people look at the same photograph and make a hot-or-not judgment, Eastwick explains, they only agree about 65% of the time. After they've known the person for months, agreement drops to barely better than a coin flip. So there isn't any universal hierarchy of desirability. What's real is that some people will think you're an 8 and others will think you're a 3—and that quirky disagreement explains most of what happens in the science of attraction. The problem is that dating apps make everything feel like they're in a market, thereby filtering out the "slow burn" people who need time to grow on you. Eastwick's advice, therefore, is forget swiping, reboot your social networks, throw candle lit dinner parties where nobody knows each other. It's more democratic, it takes longer, and it actually works. Happy V day everyone.About the GuestPaul Eastwick is Professor of Psychology at UC Davis, where he studies attraction and close relationships. He is the author of Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection (2026) and co-host of the podcast Love Factually with Eli Finkel.ReferencesConcepts discussed:● The mating market hypothesis treats attraction like an economic exchange where people are assigned desirability values and seek partners at their "level"—an idea Eastwick argues is far more limited than academics have assumed.● Limerence is the academic term for the intense, obsessive early stage of romantic attraction—what we might call infatuation or passion.● The Dunbar number (~150) represents the cognitive limit on stable social relationships—roughly the size of hunter-gatherer groups where our mating psychology evolved.● Pair bonding emerged in human evolution about two million years ago as brain size increased and children required longer periods of intensive parental investment.● Attachment theory describes the deep bonds that form when we trust someone to have our back, celebrate our successes, and support us through difficulty.Evolution and mating:● Human males became smaller relative to females and lost their sharp canines as women selected for men who were safe around babies—"the evolved male is the good caregiver and good dad."● Unlike gorillas with their harem-style mating, humans shifted toward pair bonding because helpless infants with expanding brains needed investment from both parents.● Polyamory research shows that people can form genuine attachment bonds with multiple partners—trust, wellbeing, and attachment levels match or exceed monogamous couples. Also mentioned:● Eli Finkel is Eastwick's co-host on the Love Factually podcast and author of The All-or-Nothing Marriage.● When Harry Met Sally (1989) depicts "one of the most beautiful friendships on screen," according to Eastwick, and holds up well on the friends-to-lovers pathway.● Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996) was the subject of a recent Love Factually episode—"that MTV style of filmmaking" with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio.● The incel and manosphere communities have taken 1990s attraction research and "run with it in some strange and unjustified ways."About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. Ask frequent flyers what bothers them most about air travel and you might be surprised by the answer. It's not turbulence, cramped seats, or bad food — it's the other passengers. This episode begins by revealing which behaviors irritate fellow travelers the most and what people wish would stop happening at 35,000 feet. https://pro.morningconsult.com/analysis/airplane-etiquette-annoying-behaviors What brings two people together romantically has always been a mystery — and today, it's more complicated than ever. Dating apps offer endless options, yet many people struggle to find meaningful connection. What actually predicts long-term attraction? What matters less than we think? And what do science and history tell us about love, choice, and compatibility? Paul Eastwick joins me to explain how attraction really works. He's a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, director of the Attraction and Relationships Research Laboratory, and author of Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection (https://amzn.to/49RrGS0) Most people pursue goals with a clear payoff — something they hope and expect to achieve. But some people dedicate their lives to goals they know will never happen. Why would anyone do that? What sustains them? And what do these impossible pursuits reveal about meaning, purpose, and fulfillment? Journalist Mark Medley shares remarkable stories of people chasing futures they'll never live to see. He's author of Live to See the Day: Impossible Goals, Unimaginable Futures, and the Pursuit of Things That May Never Be (https://amzn.to/46fV95J). For those deep in the dating trenches, love and attraction can feel like uncrackable riddles. How do I make myself attractive to others? How do you know if someone's into you? What should I look for in a partner — and how do I know if I've found “the one”?On this episode, we train a scientific lens on the mysteries of love. We talk with psychologist Paul Eastwick about the latest research on attraction, relationships, and finding love; learn about how dating apps are transforming the courting process; and hear about two couples who found love in unexpected places. Researcher Paul Eastwick discusses what fuels romantic attraction, why dating apps aren't necessarily the best way to gauge compatibility, and what makes for a good and healthy relationship. Eastwick is the principal investigator for the attraction and relationships research laboratory at the University of California, Davis. His new book is “Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection.” By most measures, Danielle and Kevin Robinson's longtime marriage is what the kids would call “relationship goals” — they laugh constantly, share the same interests, and get along like a house on fire. But, in the beginning, not everyone thought they were a match — including Kevin. Pulse reporter Liz Tung tells the story of how they got together, and what their romance shows about compatibility, and different kinds of attraction. When it comes to love stories, Celine Broeckaert and Frank Verstraete have a pretty unique one — they fell in love while writing a book about quantum physics. We hear the story of how the unlikely pair — Broeckaert a playwright and filmmaker, and Verstraete a quantum physicist — met, what it was about working on the book that bonded them together, and how the right partner can bring a new magic to the familiar. Their book is “Why Nobody Understands Quantum Physics: The Story of the Science That Shapes Our World.”

I grew up treating the Bible like a flawless magic book. College shattered that view when I learned about editing, genres, and cultural shaping, and for a time I couldn't read Scripture at all. Healing came when I learned to see the Bible as God intends it: an incarnational work, breathed out by God through real people in real moments. Those human textures aren't flaws. They're how God tells the rescue story until it lands. Read rightly, all of Scripture leads to Jesus and forms us for worship, clarity, and participation in His kingdom.
When it comes to being in relationships, CONNECTION and COMMITMENT are SYNONYMOUS. Unbound freedom can actually lead us away from people and away from God if we are not careful. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Freedom but that Freedom exist within the bounds of our covenant with God. If you're feeling unmoored, lacking purpose or direction, and feeling alone, the solution might actually be to trade your freedom for a committed, stable relationship. AJ and Johnny sit down with Paul Eastwick, relationship scientist and author of Bonded by Evolution, to unpack what modern dating has gotten wrong — and what the science actually says about love, attraction, and connection. They explore how online dating has distorted our view of desirability, why the search for “the perfect person” makes us miserable, and how real connection comes from shared time, not algorithms. Paul breaks down how our brains evolved for small-group bonding — not endless swiping — and reveals the truth about compatibility, attachment, and the misunderstood “friend zone.” From evolutionary psychology to modern dating anxiety, this conversation is a masterclass in how to build real relationships in a world built on comparison. Electricity and water don't forgive small mistakes. We walk through the real hazards hiding at the equipment pad and show how two simple safeguards—proper bonding and a working GFCI—stop shocks, fires, and scary surprises before they start. From tracing that lone copper wire to pressing the GFCI test button, we share the steps pros use daily and the stories that make those habits stick. You'll hear why a missing bonding lug can turn a wet pad into a danger zone, how stray voltage creates that telltale tingling in the water, and where older deck hardware can still bite. We break down what GFCI protection actually does in milliseconds, how to test it, and when to call an electrician. We also unpack rare but real failure chains—bad capacitors, overheating motors, and tired breakers—that can end in a burned-up pump, plus the quick checks that break that chain long before it gets hot.• why bonding prevents stray voltage and shocks• where to find the bonding lug and wire• how wet pads and old deck plates add risk• what a GFCI does and how to test it• rare fire chains from capacitor and breaker failure• warning signs of overheating motors• dry-running pumps, boiling water, and burn risks• safe handling and discharge of capacitors• the minimal safety checklist for every service callJoin the pool guy coaching program. A listener writes: "how do I know if I have a strong bond with my 13th month old son? What can me and my wife do about his sleeping schedule since he still wakes up 3-4 times per night to feed. My wife doesn't want to sleep train him because she fears the bond between her and him will be negatively impacted but she hasn't had a full nights rest in 6+ months.
