In the late 1940s, a man calling himself J. Frank Dalton made a startling announcement: He said that the outlaw Jesse James had not been killed by Bob Ford in 1882. According to Dalton, the entire thing was a hoax, and he – Dalton – was the REAL Jesse James. Join me today as we examine the validity of Dalton's claims. We'll also take a look at other Jesse James imposters, as well as the 1995 DNA test. Also discussed are Al Jennings, Alfred Packer, Frank James, and my willingness to accept bribes! A follow-up to last week's Hockey Update. Not all the news is good. This week's movie is based on a true story, a first for this podcast. As such, Steve dives into the real history of Alfred (Alferd) Packer.Cannibal! The Musical: A musical bit of fan fic surrounding the real life "adventures" of Alfred Packer, a 19th Century American who served in the Civil War, became a wilderness guide and gold miner, then ate a bunch of guys. That escalated quickly, huh? The movie might just be a vehicle to mock a woman Trey Parker was in a relationship with at one time, as her namesake in the movie is Packer's fictional horse, Lianne, aka The Horse Who Would Let Anybody Ride Her. He may have made this entire movie just to talk about her.Yor, The Movie with the Wordy Title final grade: Steve: It was entertaining. If you're a fan of South Park or Team America: World Police, you'll like this as a kind of origin story for Trey and Matt. Their restaurant doesn't have very good food, FYI. The local twist of this movie makes it interesting to us. 2.75/5.0Brandon: This one was a little shpadoinkle, but not all the way shpadoinkle. You could see bits and pieces of things that would later become the kind of humor that would make these guys boatloads of cash with South Park and other stuff. 2.5/5.0Cocktail of the Week:The Cannibal Reviver1 oz Gin1/2 oz Lemon Juice1/2 oz Yellow Chartreuse or Genepy de Chamois1/2 oz Dolin Sweet White VermouthPeychaud BittersCombine everything in a cocktail shaker. Shake to combine and chill, then strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge/wheel. Cocktail Grade: Maybe it's the fact that we're not popping the $80 for a bottle of Chartreuse, and the Genepy stuff messes it up, but this one was just OK. A bit of an anise flavor that will turn off black licorice haters. Better than ChatGPT creations, at least. 2.0/5.0------------------Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to:boozeandbmovies@gmail.comX: @boozeandbmoviesInstagram: @boozeandbmoviesThreads: @boozeandbmovieswww.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies

Alfred G Packer left Provo Utah with a group of prospectors to Breckenridge Colorado to try to strike it rich during the Colorado Gold Rush in 1873. (Host: Josh)  Alfred, or sometimes Alferd Packer, is one of the most infamous villains in Colorado history. As the story goes, Packer, a trail guide, led his party into disaster and then killed them one by one before consuming their bodies in order to survive. He was arrested, tried, convicted, and then escaped. Once reprehended Packer changed his story once again. And now more recent evidence has emerged that seems to have exonerated him. We'll try to sort of this out on this week's episode of Footnoting History.

In this collection of true stories from the Old West, we'll discuss George Parrot, aka Big Nose George – a lesser-known outlaw who had a noose around his neck more times than you'd believe. And that's just half the story! You'll never guess how this one ends! Afterward, we'll hop over to El Paso for a legendary showdown between madams Big Alice Abbot and Etta “The Grasshopper” Clark before discussing the legendary gunfight in Newton, Kansas. And don't forget about legendary Joaquin Murrieta – the supposed inspiration for the likes of Zorro and Batman. Was Murrieta a righteous freedom fighter or simply a charismatic bandit? Then we've got Ed Scarborough, a fearless lawman whose biggest enemies turned out to be himself and a rabid skunk. With cross-dressing, shootouts with bicycles, and daring prison escapes, Ed's story is about as wild as the West gets. Following Scarborough, we'll delve into the Colorado cannibal Alfred Packer and his eyebrow-raising story of survival. Finally, we'll pay a visit to Winslow, Arizona, where an armed robbery by down-and-out cowboys resulted in a literal trip to hell, a bloody gunfight, and an Old West Lazarus rising from the dead for one last sip of whiskey! Who was Alfred Packer? Was he America's first Hannibal the Cannibal? On February 9, 1874, Alferd Packer and five other men departed from the camp of Ute Chief Ouray, near what is now Montrose, Colorado. They were resuming a trek that had begun several months earlier in Provo, Utah, hoping to reach newly discovered gold prospects in Breckenridge, Colorado. While the original party was considerably larger, only Packer (as guide) and Israel Swan, Shannon Wilson Bell, George Noon, James Humphrey, and Frank Miller dared risk the sometimes brutal Colorado winter in search of riches. And brutal it was, as not long after leaving the safety of Chief Ouray's camp, the group was engulfed in a furious blizzard near the present site of Lake City, Colorado. Packer was next seen on April 16, 1874, straggling into the Los Pinos Indian Agency with little more than a rifle and a skinning knife belonging to members of his party. The story Packer told at that time was that, once the storm hit, he had set up camp while the others went forward in search of food. They never returned, and Packer subsequently headed out for Los Pinos. - https://www.museumtrail.org/alferd-packer SOURCES: https://www.museumtrail.org/alferd-packer https://www.newspapers.com/clip/120993735/the-oskaloosa-independent/ https://www.newspapers.com/image/535743336/?terms=Alfred%20Packer%20dead&match=1&clipping_id=120991548 https://www.newspapers.com/image/226969329/?terms=Alfred%20Packer%20&match=1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/728654362/?clipping_id=120990249&terms=Alfred%20Packer%20dea&match=1 Learn more about your ad choices. Allison and Chris round out the shout-out to the show's most popular listener cities by bringing you some pretty heavy hitting mysteries from the Top 5!In Dallas, we bring the story of a possibly haunted landmark, the Goatman Bridge, with some chilling lore that feels true, even if it might not be.Next we travel to the Rocky Mountains of Denver, for a tale of gold prospecting and cannibalism. Did Alfred Packer merely eat his fellow campers to survive the elements during a harrowing journey to strike it rich, or were there more sinister actions afoot? The mystery endures to this day, but what do you think? While pondering that, follow us up to Seattle, where not far outside the city spawned the original modern day sighting of UFOs in 1947, by one Kenneth Arnold. Was it aliens he spied that day zooming above Mount Rainier? We can't be for certain. What we do know is if you want to know the birth place of UFOs as we know them, you need to start a little further north than Roswell, New Mexico. After that, Allison brings it back home (literally) to Dayton, Ohio, where she discusses the serial killer that once lurked in her backyard in the early 20th century: The Dayton Strangler. Finally, we end our journey at the infamous Windy City, Chicago, with a case that pits the innocence movement against the criminal justice system. The case of Anthony Porter and Alstory Simon was told in the stunning documentary, "A Murder in the Park" back in 2014, but here Allison breaks down the basics of the case that led to the state of Illinois banning the death penalty, while also bringing a lot of questions to the methods used by all who claim to fight for justice.Additional Info:The Goatman Bridgehttps://wedentondoit.com/blog/2013/10/18/back-in-the-day-goatmans-bridgeAlfred Packer Cannibalismhttps://www.onlyinyourstate.com/colorado/denver/unsolved-mystery-denver/https://archives.colorado.gov/collections/history/alfred-packer Kenneth Arnold UFO Sightinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Arnold_UFO_sightingThe Dayton Stranglerhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dayton_StranglerMurder in the Park/Alstory Simon/Anthony Porterhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Porterhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Murder_in_the_ParkShow Credits:Graphics -- Nathaniel Dickson: http://ndickson.comMusic -- Spencer Morelock, Ken DicksonDing Dong Darkness Time Media:Twitter: @dddarknesstimeInstagram: dddarknesstimeGmail: dddarknesstime@gmail.com

When a haggard Alfred Packer stumbled from the Colorado wilderness in 1874, he at first said he'd been abandoned by five traveling companions who'd left him to fend for himself. But his already-shaky story quickly changed once a search party uncovered the remains of five mutilated men. Packer -- sometimes referred to by the first name "Alferd" thanks to a misspelled tattoo -- went down in history as the so-called Colorado Cannibal, but debate lingers to this day over whether he'd committed premeditated murder or simply found a way to survive horrifying circumstances. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from the Obsessed Network exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. Lost Highways: Dispatches from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains

In the winter of 1874, Alfred Packer led a group of prospectors into the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. After returning alone, he confessed to eating the remains of his travel companions, and was convicted of murder despite claiming self-defense. The conviction sealed his place in history as the "Colorado Cannibal." After almost 150 years, Noel and Tyler look back at Packer's story and discover there's much more to it than simple questions of guilt or innocence.

The North American mineral rushes of the 19th Century saw hundreds of thousands flock to mountains and mines across the continent in search of fame and fortune, from panning for gold to working long, dangerous shifts down poorly run mines, entire industries exploded overnight, sucking in workers from around the world. During the San Juan Silver Rush of the 1870s, one of these workers was a young man named Alfred Packer, an epileptic, military cast-off, who drifted across America looking for his passport to a new life. He had lived a reasonably anonymous existence, until one fateful expedition saw him wind up almost starving to death, only surviving by eating his fellow party members, a surprisingly common occurrence in the Old West. Long before becoming household names with the creation of South Park, a couple of film students named Trey Parker and Matt Stone got together with their friends and classmates to make a movie about Alfred Packer, the first person convicted of cannibalism in the United States. The result was Cannibal! The Musical, an irreverent yet quaint film full of songs and flesh-eating. The last stop on their search for a distributor was the infamous Troma Entertainment and the rest is history. Hosts Lucas Mangum and Jeff Burk talk about everything from the making of the film, the film itself, the true story of Alfred Packer, the INSANE commentary track on the DVD and early experiences with Parker and Stone.

The Daily Sun-Up

Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Thursday January 21st, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - The city’s encampments persist, with tensions boiling over in Capitol Hill. Denver has opened two camps, but they’re full, and some are refusing to live there. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to January 21st, 1842, when Alfred Packer, also known as "The Colorado Cannibal" was born. Packer earned his infamy at 32 when he and five other men had attempted to travel through the San Juan Mountains, during the peak of winter.  Now, our feature story. About 10 feet from an encampment on Pearl Street in Denver, where about 25 people are living in tents, keeping warm with makeshift fire pits fueled by propane tanks inside blanket- and tarp-covered structures. 24 year old Chloe Lives in her street level condo. She feels too unsafe to use her last name in this story.  What began last fall as a small encampment with a few quiet people who are homeless has grown exponentially since mid-December. The block is strewn with clothing and spoiled food, and there are syringes and foil with the remnants of heroin or meth.  Colorado Sun reporter Jennifer Brown paid Chloe a visit. And she’s joining us today to tell us more about the current situation. Jennifer, to start, how did you feel about the homelessness crisis after your visit with Chloe? Here’s some of Jennifer’s interview with Chloe  The city has now set up new safe outdoor spaces, where red and gray tents are lined up in tidy rows, there are toilets and showers, and staff is on site 24 hours a day.  Jennifer, can you tell us, besides these safe outdoor spaces, what programs is the city working on to solve this crisis? Jennifer also spoke with 34 year old Marcio Johnson, who described living in the encampment and trying to keep it clean.  The city has pushed the campers out of the alley a couple of times, and the encampments briefly dispersed to other parts of Capitol Hill only to return within days. More campers moved in after Denver cleaned up the large encampments by the Capitol and Morey Middle School. It seems like no one is winning.  And Chloe says it’s not their fault. It’s not our fault either, though. She blames the city at this point for lack of response, and a lack of action.  Thanks for listening. Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Emergency management crews have started to decommission the overflow coronavirus hospital set up at the Colorado Convention Center. None of the beds have been used, and the site was considered a last resort to the other four overflow sites. The work will finish by late March. Mesa County business leaders are urging newly inaugurated President Joe Biden to keep the Bureau of Land Management headquarters in Grand Junction. The office’s move from D.C. in 2019 was seen as a political play, but locals say it’s important to keep officials close to the lands they’re regulating. Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission will consider new regulations next month to reduce emissions from natural gas well regulators. Pneumatic controllers, as they’re called, manage well conditions and release a little bit of natural gas every time they toggle a valve. The proposal would require no-bleed controllers. In this episode, we discuss one of America's oldest pastimes: cannibalism. Alfred (or Alferd if you ask him) Packer was an early settler in the Western Frontier which was essentially one hard time after another, and that wasn't helped by his general unlikeableness and all-around shady behavior. In 1874, when he led a group of men through the harsh Colorado winter wilderness against the warnings of the Indigenous tribe who had welcomed them in, all the men ended up dead, except for ol' Packer. In fact, he claimed to have survived off something all together unsettling: the men's meaty thighs. The story was an uproar for the newly settled area, and it was a venerable shitshow as they attempted to seek justice for the dead men. Join us for a very special collaboration with our girls over at Kim and Ket Stay Alive...Maybe who covered the amazingly bizarre movie "Ravenous" which was very loosely based off the story of Alfred Packer and is MUCH sexier. At the end of the episode, we all sit together to discuss our feelings on cannibalism, Ravenous, Packer, and which of us would be cool with chomping on some meaty thighs...outside of the bedroom. This new podcast features Matt, who loves watching bad movies in his basement, and Josh, who loves giving Matt grief for his love of bad movies. Every month, Matt is going to bring Josh down to his Subterranean Fun Pit (aka, his basement) and show him one of his favorite bad movies, hoping to find one Josh loves, or at least likes a little bit. This month, Josh is shown the Trey Parker classic, Cannibal! The Musical.  What will Josh think of this 1993 musical? Will he hunger for it, the way Alfred Packer hungers for human flesh? Will Matt win him over with his knowledge of the film? Will the producer have to call him out for wrong facts? Put those earbuds in your earholes, and let them fill you with their voices for the next twenty two minutes! Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael

On this edition of Parallax Views, Dr. Harold Schechter, one of America's most prolific and voluminous true crime authors, joins the show for a wide-ranging conversation on history's real-life monsters from Ed Gein to H.H Holmes that attempts elucidate why society is fascinated by serial killers, violent art, murder, and mayhem. The conversation begins with Dr. Schechter explaining how he became interested in true crime through his teaching literature, specifically of the gothic horror genre, as a professor at Queens College, CUNY. This leads us into a discussion of his first book, Deviant: The Shocking True Story of the Original "Psycho", about the ghoulish exploits of the murderous graverobber "The Butcher of Plainfield" Ed Gein. We delve into how Gein served as a source of inspiration for Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs as well as a brief rundown of Gein's case that attempts to separate fact from fiction. From there we delve a bit into why we, as a society, are so fascinated by serial killers. Dr. Schechter makes a connection between the gruesomeness of folklore and the mythic status that killers take on in our culture. He argues that their are probably psychological reasons that we tell ourselves stories real-life murderers and madmen. We then dive into one of Dr. Schechter's most famous works, Depraved: The Shocking True Story of America's First Serial, which chronicles the life and crimes of serial killer H.H. Holmes. Holmes has re-captured the popular imagination in America thanks to Erik Larsons' The Devil in the White City and the hit TV series American Horror Story: Hotel, but Dr. Schechter was one of the first to revisit the case. The story of Holmes is one of insurance scams and murder combined that has taken on a legendary status since it first hit the headlines in the late 1800's. Dr. Schechter discusses how he came to question a lot of the more sensationalistic aspects of the Holmes case, which have now become accepted uncritically as fact for many, that were popularized by the yellow journalism of Holmes day. This opens up a discussion about how Dr. Schechter goes about his research in a field that is often rife with misinformation and sensationalism. During this segment we make reference to Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes and the legend of Sawney Bean, Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive and Joe Ball, "The Confessions Killer" Henry Lee Lucas, the ways in which folklore about murderers and other rogues becomes accepted as historical fact, and even Grimm's fairytales. We then get into Harold Schechter's foray into cultural studies with Savage Pastimes: A Cultural History of Violent Entertainment. Dr. Schechter illuminates how violence has always existed in all forms of popular media and that each time moral panics arise around them from comic books to video games. At this point we also delve into how true crime books have existed longer than most people would think and the way the horrific and grotesque has always played a role in art. Dr. Schechter also expressed how man seems to have a violent nature but that there may be a silver lining in the way that we channel our aggressive tendencies into media. In talking about violent art we eventually get to talking about one of Dr. Schechter's closest friends, the gifted artist Joe Coleman. Coleman makes mind-blowing artwork which contains painting within paintings dealing with historical figures, many of whom walked on the dark side of the human experience. After that we get back to the topic of true crime by discussing how Dr. Schechter's work deals primarily with murderers from before the popular serial killer boom of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. This leads us to one of Dr. Schechter's newer books, Man-Eater: The Saga of Alfred Packer, about the true story of an American cannibal in the frontier west as well as the unusual movie about him, made by South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker, Cannibal: The Musical. We begin to wrap up by discussing the seeming transition that has taken place from the dominance of serial killers in culture to mass murders like school shooters. Dr. Schechter has some interesting takes on what may be behind this that provide some real food for thought. And finally, Dr. Schechter briefly talks about his newest book Hell's Princess: The Mystery of Belle Gunness, Butcher of Men and his Amazon Originals series Bloodlands. Today I tell the story as told on the Denver Orbit Podcast about Colorado Cannibal Alfred Packer. Alfred wandered into the woods with 5 men in the winter of 1874 and he was the only one to walk out alive. He was spending money from multiple men's wallets and telling conflicting stories about what happened to the 5 other men. Rumors began to spread about how Ute women saw him toss a human arm into the river at a campsite, how he looked well fed and healthy when he wandered out of the woods and how he enjoyed dining on human flesh as a hobby. However, exactly what happened in those mountains that winter will never be known.

History Dweebs - A look at True Crime, Murders, Serial Killers and the Darkside of History

Alfred Packer was an American prospector who confessed to cannibalism during the winter of 1873–1874. He and 5 other men attempted to travel through the high mountains of Colorado during the peak of a harsh winter. They ran out of food when the snow became too deep for travel. Alfred confessed to eating some of his companions and using their flesh to survive his trek out of the mountains two months later. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
