Imagine the moment you're holding a scalpel over your own skin, knowing you need to cut into yourself in order to save your life. Leonid Rogozov was doctor who was a novice at surgery, but found himself needing to do exactly that in order to survive. In this episode, we talk about self-surgery and tell the story of the man who performed his own appendectomy while stranded at an Antarctic Research Station. There are places on Earth where you should not get sick. But you can't choose the day and time to have an attack of appendicitis ! Newly certified doctor Leonid Rogozov spent the winter of 1961 in the Antarctic. Far, far away from any medical assistance other than his own.

It would be understandable if you felt a little cut off from the rest of the world these days. Hopefully it won't be as challenging as it was for Dr. Leonid Rogozov, who on this day in 1961 had to remove his own appendix while stationed in Antarctica. Plus: today in 1970, Pink Floyd played a concert for public TV in San Francisco. Silence in the studio! This week, as we are separated by social distancing and isolation, learn about two heroes who forged through similar circumstances to make a dent in the universe. Leonid Rogozov was a Russian doctor trapped in Antarctica with acute appendicitis; Patricia Young (see post) was just a teenager when her home city of London came under...
Ramiro Urioste Ugarte y Pilar Pérez Cano DOCTORLEY.COM

Leonid Rogozov was a Soviet general practitioner who took part in the sixth Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1960–1961. He was the only doctor stationed at the Novolazarevskaya Station and, while there, developed appendicitis, which meant he had to perform an appendectomy on himself, a famous case of self-surgery. Jeff thinks this makes Leonid a prime example of a badass. Does Anthony agree? GET BONUS EPISODES, VIDEO HANGOUTS AND MORE. When William Harrison disappeared from Campden, England, in 1660, his servant offered an incredible explanation: that he and his family had murdered him. The events that followed only proved the situation to be even more bizarre. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe "the Campden wonder," an enigma that has eluded explanation for more than 300 years. We'll also consider Vladimir Putin's dog and puzzle over a little girl's benefactor. Intro: In 1921, Pennsylvania surgeon Evan O'Neill Kane removed his own appendix. (Soviet physician Leonid Rogozov did the same 40 years later.) John Cowper Powys once promised to visit Theodore Dreiser "as a spirit or in some other astral form" -- and, according to Dreiser, did so. In April 1961, Russian doctor Leonid Rogozov developed appendicitis while working in Antarctica. The only solution was to operate on himself. Witness speaks to his son, Vladislav Rogozov. (Photo: Leonid Rogozov during the operation. Credit: Vladislav Rogozov)
This is a repost of an episode of Porc Therapy hosted by Stephanie Murphy that Hannah and I appeared on. "My friends Jake from The Voluntary Life and Hannah from Becoming Who You Are join me today for this fun podcast-only show where our discussion centers around living free – now! We begin with a PorcFest 2012 wrap up, then talk about connecting over shared values, immigration issues, the Free State Project, civil disobedience and political activism (and our disagreements with both), Jake's amazing impassioned speech on living free!, intentional communities, permanent tourism and heading south to find freedom, living on a boat, someone who made his own island out of soda bottles, division of labor/going “off the grid,” and Leonid Rogozov's famous self-appendectomy."
What do you do if you're the only doctor on a Soviet Antarctic expedition and your appendix starts acting up? If you're not a wuss, you operate on yourself like Leonid Rogozov! If you're a Caustic Soda host, you cry in a corner until it explodes and you die painfully. This episode you'll hear about a great many people of great will and their amazing self-surgeries!
