Important announcement! Today we say farewell to Levi (BCFH in peace), and welcome new cohost Capitalisimo, who has previously appeared on this show for the Cyclomancy and An Amazing Journey into the Psychotic Mind episodes!Alexander Bogdanov (born Malinovsky) was one of the original members of the Bolshevik Party, eventual opponent of Vladimir Lenin, and active participant in the 1905 Revolution. A very narrow thinker with limited interests, he studied and wrote on Marxist Revolution, blood transfusions, came up with a precursor to systems theory which he called 'tectology', proletarian art, and, most importantly for this episode, published works of science fiction. The Red Star, first published in 1908, is the story of Leonid, a Russian revolutionary, who gets taken to Mars by aliens, witnesses the staggering level of historical development which they have achieved on Mars, and subsequently goes insane and murders someone. Earthlings, it turns out, simply can't be trusted.Helping out for this episode is Parker Longbaugh, a pulp author and (now) expert on Martian Marxism.Buy Parker's book! Leonid Belkind, co founder and CTO at Torq, joins The Tech Trek to talk about what changes when an engineering organization does more than experiment with AI tools. Torq builds agentic security operations, and Leonid shares how his team is using AI across engineering, product, hiring, customer success, and go to market work. This conversation gets past the shallow version of “AI makes coding faster.” Leonid makes a clear distinction between coding and software engineering, and explains why the best teams are using AI to shift cognitive load, not remove judgment.Practical takeaways• AI does not erase software engineering. It changes where engineering judgment shows up.• Strong engineers still produce better AI generated work because they know what to ask, what to test, and what tradeoffs matter.• Hiring processes need to reflect how engineers actually work now, including how they use AI to build, explain, and defend technical decisions.• Productivity should not only be measured by speed. Leonid talks about throughput, maturity of delivery, and whether teams can produce more without lowering quality.• AI adoption becomes more powerful when it moves beyond engineering into product, customer success, revenue operations, and talent.Key moments00:32What Torq means by agentic security operations and why different tasks need different AI approaches.01:49Why building AI native products with AI native methods creates a useful feedback loop for engineering teams.05:28How AI shifts cognitive load so engineers can spend more attention on user experience, architecture, and product value.10:34The difference between software engineering and coding, and why that distinction matters more now.15:13How Torq has changed technical interviews to evaluate AI assisted engineering instead of pretending AI does not exist.21:51How one R&D group measured meaningful delivery gains after adopting AI more deeply.24:25Why AI adoption is moving into product, customer success, revenue operations, and talent teams. One Line That Stuck“Software engineering as a discipline is not going away. It just changes a phase a bit.”Practical moves to stealFor hiring, Leonid suggests giving candidates more complex take home work because AI is now part of the real engineering workflow. The evaluation then shifts to the candidate's ability to explain the architecture, defend decisions, describe how AI was used, and show how they tested and constrained the output. That is a much better signal than asking someone to work as if the tools do not exist.Subscribe or follow The Tech Trek for more conversations with technical leaders building, hiring, and operating through the next shift in software, data, AI, and engineering execution.

This podcast was recorded in partnership with Leleka Foundation, an American-Ukrainian charitable initiative committed to helping frontline medics in Ukraine save lives. This project creates a vital platform for Ukrainian frontline medics to share firsthand trauma care experience from the battlefield with their American counterparts, strengthening knowledge exchange. Discover key insights on medical evacuation and combat experiences from Maria Litha, a combat medic. Learn how to handle critical situations under fire and improve emergency response strategies. In a world where the realities of war often remain hidden, the experiences of those on the front lines reveal critical lessons that can save lives. In this post, we dive into the insights shared by Maria Litha, a combat medic who has been on the front lines since 2022, as she recounts her experiences in medical evacuation and the challenges faced in high-stress environments. The Reality of Medical EvacuationsOne of the most critical aspects of battlefield medicine is the evacuation process. Maria highlights the importance of understanding the environment in which evacuations take place. Conditions can vary significantly depending on the location and intensity of conflict.Case Study: Evacuating LeonidMaria recounts a harrowing case involving a patient named Leonid, who suffered a severe injury after stepping on a mine. After enduring 12 hours in a precarious position, he was finally evacuated under the cover of darkness. The challenges faced during this evacuation included:- Massive blood loss: Leonid required immediate attention due to his condition.- Road conditions: The evacuation vehicle had to navigate bombed-out and rugged terrain, complicating the medical team's efforts.- Limited resources: With only one bottle of plasma available, the team had to carefully manage Leonid's care without exacerbating his injuries.Challenges Faced by Combat MedicsCombat medics like Maria often face unique challenges that require quick thinking and adaptability. Some of the key issues include:- Drone and artillery threats: Medics must constantly be aware of their surroundings to avoid being targeted while providing care.- Equipment limitations: The unstable environment can render medical monitors ineffective, making it difficult to gauge a patient's condition accurately.- Time constraints: Evacuations must often be conducted rapidly, where every second counts.Strategies for Effective EvacuationsTo improve the success of medical evacuations, Maria shares several strategies:- Preparation: Understanding the layout of the battlefield and potential threats is crucial for planning safe evacuation routes.- Team coordination: Effective communication and teamwork can enhance the efficiency of care during emergencies.- Utilizing technology: Employing drone detection systems and other technological aids can help medics stay safe while performing their duties.Key Takeaways- Adaptability is vital: Each evacuation scenario presents its own unique challenges that require quick adjustments.- Collaboration is essential: Working closely with team members ensures that all aspects of patient care are addressed effectively.-Continuous learning: Combat medics must stay updated on new techniques and technologies to improve their response in the field. For more content, go to www.prolongedfieldcare.orgConsider supporting us: patreon.com/ProlongedFieldCareCollective or www.lobocoffeeco.com/product-page/prolonged-field-care

COURAGE! PART 4Tessa Szyszkowitz in conversation with Leonid VolkovHOW TO FIGHT AGAINST PUTIN AND HIS WAR FROM EXILEAfter Alexej Navalny's death in a Russian prison camp in 2024 his Anti Corruption Foundation continues its work against dictatorship from outside the country.                 Their political lives are closely intertwined: Leonid Volkov was the chief of staff to the leader of the Russian opposition Alexej Navalny. When Navalny died in February 2024 his wife Yulia took over his role to speak up against Putin's dictatorship. Her right hand man, again, is Leonid Volkov, who already managed Navalny's political campaigns at the beginning of the 2010s.Almost four years after the war against Ukraine started Volkov will explain how the Anti-Corruption Foundation continues to influence the Russian public from abroad. How do you conduct opinion polls about Putin's popularity or the support for his war without endangering the Russian respondents? And: How many Russians really support Putin? Spoiler: 10 Percent. 30 Percent are actively against him and the vast majority watches silently until this regime falls. Leonid Volkov will explain the Russian mindset, the scenario for a possible end of Putin's war and his regime.Leonid Volkov is the political director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, the leading organisation of Russian anti-Putin and anti-war resistance movement, founded by the late Alexei Navalny. Volkov also serves as chief of staff for Yulia Navalnaya, who took over the leadership after her husband was murdered by Vladimir Putin. He was campaign manager and chief of staff for Navalny's Moscow mayoral campaign of 2013 and presidential campaign of 2018. Since 2019 he has to reside outside of Russia. There are 11 politically motivated criminal cases against him initiated by Putin's regime; he's sentenced to 18 years behind bar in absentia.Tessa Szyszkowitz, is an award winning Austrian journalist and author living in London. She writes regularly for Falter, Tagesspiegel and NZZ am Sonntag. Her last book so far was “Echte Engländer – Britain and Brexit” (2018). In this episode, we speak with Ilan Peleg, co-founder and CEO of Lightrun Some founders jump in fast. Ilan Peleg plays the long game. Before launching Lightrun, Ilan had already built deep roots in cybersecurity and engineering leadership. A former national middle-distance champion, he was trained to move with speed - but only when the moment is right. Lightrun, the startup he co-founded with Leonid Blouvshtein, is now backed by Accel and Insight Partners with $70M raised, and is redefining how developers debug in production environments. But behind the company's technical edge is a methodical, thoughtful story of timing, discipline, and trust. In this conversation, we explore: The startup lifecycle, broken down by phase. Ilan outlines the specific goals-and dangers-of each chapter: Years 0–2: Product-market fit. “You may come up with an amazing product… but is it delightful enough that people and organizations truly love it?” Years 2-4: Go-to-market fit. “You've proven value, now can you sell it repeatedly?” Years 4–6: Scaling. “This is where it gets really hard-it demands consistency, leadership maturity, and real operational backbone.” Why founders must resist the urge to scale too soon. Each stage brings its own pressures, and Ilan shares why timing is a competitive advantage few talk about. Vision vs. credibility: how to pitch like a founder who knows both. “Some investors want you to pitch a $100B story or they'll say you're not crazy enough. But you can't just sell the dream-you need believable milestones.” The power of deep domain expertise. Ilan and his co-founder Leonid weren't startup tourists-they deliberately delayed founding Lightrun until they'd spent years gaining firsthand experience with the problem space. “Once we came up with an idea in the domain we lived by, things moved magnitudes faster.” They moved fast because they'd waited to move. A co-founder story rooted in long-term alignment. Their partnership wasn't born in a hackathon. It was built over years of shared conversations and career moves with the goal of someday launching something together. “Leonid wasn't optimizing for salary-he was optimizing for being better skilled for what we'd eventually build.” Why good ideas come with a clock. “If the opportunity's big enough, others will feel it too. You don't have unlimited time to act.” How mentorship and networks compound growth. Ilan reflects on the exponential value of getting the right advice-and surrounding yourself with people who've failed and succeeded. It's what helps turn lessons into leverage. Why founders must imagine more than just their company-they must imagine the market. “It's not only about what you're building-it's how the market will evolve by the time you get there.” This episode is for anyone who's still getting ready-who's learning, building experience, and wondering when it's their time to start. Listen in if you want to see what preparation really looks like-and what happens when long-game thinking meets the right idea.

The patchiest of all meteor showers will be at its best tomorrow night. Unfortunately, this is one of its off years. At best, it might produce a dozen or so “shooting stars” per hour. Over the past two centuries, though, the Leonids have produced some amazing outbursts. The first of these came in 1833. Skywatchers in parts of America reported rates of a hundred thousand meteors per hour – not a shower, but a storm. The nature of meteor showers was unknown at the time, so many saw the outburst as the end of the world. The Leonids flare to life when Earth crosses the path of Comet Tempel-Tuttle. The comet passes close to the Sun every 33 years or so. It sheds tons of material on each pass – tiny bits of rock and dirt. Each cloud of debris spreads out and forms its own stream. A shower takes place when Earth flies through one of the streams. Newer streams are denser, so they produce more intense displays. Those streams congregate near the comet, so the outbursts occur when the comet is close to the Sun. The last outburst came in the early 2000s. And Earth probably won’t pass through another storm-producing stream until the end of the century – leaving us with meager displays of the Leonids. To see this year’s display, find a safe viewing site away from city lights. The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, so you don’t need to look in a particular direction to see them. The best view comes between midnight and dawn. Script by Damond Benningfield

Tiangong Space Station's Stranded Crew: The Shenzhou 21 crew aboard the Tiangong Space Station faces a precarious situation after the Shenzhou 20 mission astronauts returned home using their capsule, which was damaged by space debris. With no immediate escape vehicle, the crew awaits the uncrewed launch of Shenzhou 22, highlighting the risks posed by space debris in low Earth orbit.NASA's Scenic Route to Mars: NASA's Escapade mission has launched twin probes, Blue and Gold, that will take an innovative detour to Mars. Instead of heading directly, they will first travel to the second Lagrange point (L2) to study space weather for a year before using Earth's gravity to assist their journey to Mars in 2027, providing a unique 3D view of the Martian atmosphere.Upcoming Leonid Meteor Shower: The Leonid meteor shower is set to peak on November 18, but this year's display may be underwhelming, with only five to ten meteors expected per hour. Earth is passing through a sparse debris stream from the parent comet Tempel-Tuttle, leading to a quieter show than in previous years.Discovery of a New Super Earth: Astronomers have discovered a new super Earth, GJ251C, located just 18 light years away. Positioned in its star's habitable zone, this rocky planet is a prime candidate for future observation with next-generation telescopes, which may help to identify biosignatures in its atmosphere and advance our search for extraterrestrial life. For more cosmic updates, visit our website at astronomydaily.io. A Man Who Changed the World: Leonid Ilich Brezhnev, 1906-1982

In 1991, as the USSR broke apart and its population became open to the reforming discourse of Mikhail Gorbachev's reform program of perestroika, Soviet dissident historian Roy Medvedev set the tone for subsequent writing on Leonid Ilich Brezhnev, concluding that he was “a personality so mediocre and a politician so ordinary” that he “quickly disappeared from the political scene and also in the literal and metaphorical sense.” But not for long. When it became clear by the end of the decade that market capitalism and democracy had not improved people's lives, nostalgia for the Brezhnev era rightly raised the question of whether he had been given his just due and unfairly blamed for the shortcomings of the Soviet system. This reversal of fortune also makes clear that no Soviet leader has been as neglected or as misunderstood as Brezhnev and therefore no Soviet party boss is in such need of a fresh historical reassessment. Divided into two parts, my presentation will first make a case for Brezhnev, emphasizing his vision of guaranteeing stability, assuring peace, and letting people live well. Earlier I coined the term “Soviet man of peace,” to characterize Brezhnev. I emphasize this point here, arguing that his dream of wanting to be remembered as an asset for world peace made him a leader who changed the world. In part 2 of my presentation, I zoom in on the Leonid Brezhnev that, as his biographer, I might never know and propose what these unresolved questions might mean. Donald J. Raleigh is the Jay Richard Judson Distinguished Professor of Russian History Emeritus at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has authored, translated, and edited numerous books on modern Russian history including Revolution on the Volga (1986), Experiencing Russia's Civil War (2002), Russia's Sputnik Generation (2006) and Soviet Baby Boomers (2012). He currently is writing a biography of Soviet leader Leonid Ilich Brezhnev, research for which has taken him to archives in Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, the UK, and the US. This lecture is sponsored by the Alice D. Mortenson/Petrovich Distinguished Chair of Russian History and University Lectures.

In ancient times, a blood moon was considered an omen, its copper glow instilling a sense of foreboding in people who felt it signaled an impending disaster. Today, however, huge advancements in the study of astronomy have meant the occurrence of the celestial event is eagerly awaited by astronomy enthusiasts and ordinary people alike, all keen to witness and document its rare beauty. From 11:30 pm on Sunday to 5 am on Monday, this year's first and only blood moon visible in China captivated stargazers across the country. Some leaned out of windows to stare at the sky, while others set up professional equipment to capture the spectacle. Tang Haiming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, said that a blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when Earth aligns between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow over the moon. Colors with longer wavelengths make it through Earth's atmosphere and make the moon appear orangish or reddish. The moon displays different shades of red depending on atmospheric conditions, he added. Tang, who is also secretary-general of the Shanghai Astronomical Society, said the blood moon was observed not only in Asia, but also in the Eastern Atlantic, Oceania, the Indian Ocean, Europe, Africa, the Western Pacific and Antarctica. “The blood moon is a normal astronomical phenomenon. During a total lunar eclipse, the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun combine and can lead to astronomical tides. However, there is no need to panic. Many people from Shanghai went to the Qiantang River to see the tide,” Tang said. According to him, the probability of a lunar eclipse occurring is relatively low, even more so for a total lunar eclipse, the last of which occurred in 2022. “Since this total lunar eclipse occurred at midnight, the observatory employed a six-hour slow live broadcast format. Extensive astronomical explanations and introductions to lunar exploration projects were prepared beforehand, with the hope of using this opportunity to encourage people to look more at the sky,” he added. When 37-year-old Beijing resident and astronomy enthusiast Zhang Yanliang first heard about the latest blood moon occurrence, he immediately began making preparations to see and photograph the celestial event.37岁的北京市民、天文爱好者张延亮在得知此次“血月”天象消息后,立刻开始为观测和拍摄做准备。Zhang said he has witnessed numerous astronomical phenomena such as the passing of Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997, the Leonid meteor shower, and solar and lunar eclipses. Although a total lunar eclipse was nothing new for him, he still did not want to miss it. Setting up two cameras with 800-millimeter telephoto lenses — one for time-lapse videos and the other for still photos — Zhang took hundreds of shots, capturing the fine details of the moon. “It's worth mentioning that the weather in Beijing early this morning was excellent, with high atmospheric transparency, making it very suitable for viewing and photography,” he said, adding that with the development of smartphones, capturing celestial events has become easier, and many high-quality photos shared on social media had actually been taken with phones. According to Tang from the CAS, the next total lunar eclipse visible in some parts of China is expected next year on March 3, right after sunset, and more activities are anticipated due to the favorable timing. blood moonn.血月/blʌd muːn/total lunar eclipsen.月全食/ˈtəʊtl ˈluːnə ɪˈklɪps/

Instead of rehashing the internal dynamics of the Bolshevik takeover, the authors have carefully juxtaposed the international ambitions of the Bolsheviks with the Revolution's reception around the world. Daly and Trofimov pair their lucid introductory essay with documents from Soviet officials, intellectuals in South America, W. E. B. Du Bois in the United States, and others, so readers will quickly realize how revolutionary ideas cross oceans and transcend geopolitical boundaries. The Russian Revolution and Its Global Impact: A Short History with Documents (Hackett Publishing, 2017) thus takes a topic once reserved for students of Russian history and places it in a world historical perspective; those interested in global history, European history, and, of course, those fascinated by events in Petrograd and Moscow will find ample sources of inspiration in this text.

In this episode of Building the Base, Hondo Geurts and Lauren Bedula are joined by James Parker and Chris Lay, co-founding partners of Leonid Capital Partners, a private credit fund supporting the US national security ecosystem. Drawing from their unique backgrounds in astrophysics and neuroscience, Parker and Lay discuss how their innovative lending approach fills a critical gap in defense tech financing, offering credit facilities based on government contracts rather than traditional equity investments.Five key takeaways from today's episode:Traditional banks won't lend against government contracts due to 30-day cancellation clauses, creating a significant financing gap that specialized credit funds like Leonid can fill by lending 50-60% of contract values at set interest rates rather than taking equity stakes.Trusted capital is essential for national security, with clean funding sources becoming increasingly important as private investment surges into defense tech, requiring deliberate vetting to avoid potential foreign influence or undue investor pressure.Mission-driven business models can accelerate growth, with Leonid's commitment to donate 50% of profits creating competitive advantages through stronger relationships, advisory connections, and credibility with service-disabled veteran-owned businesses.Policy changes could unlock more private investment in national security, particularly through preferential tax treatment for investors in critical defense initiatives while potentially removing tax advantages for investments in adversarial economies.Cross-sector talent recruitment requires both patriotic appeal and economic incentives, with successful defense tech companies like Palantir and Anduril demonstrating that technical talent will engage with national security missions when there's potential for both meaningful impact and financial success.

Hosted by Chris Beckett & Shane Ludtke, two amateur astronomers in Saskatchewan. actualastronomy@gmail.com Episode 483! Today we have a returning Special Guest, though it's been a  while. Dr. Brian Ventrudo is author the Cosmic Pursuits web page and a contributing editor for S&T. He has a Ph.D in Laser Spectroscopy and helped measure the fingerprints of the molecules found in interstellar space and planetary atmosphere.    In an email Brian mentioned the TV NP127 being a dream scope…which is remaining just a dream for the time being. But why is the NP 127 such a fantastic design? - Fast, flat field, reasonably portable etc. - What have you configured on the cheap? 120mm, mount eyepieces etc. - Wide field eyepieces and the TS Flat2? Field curvature. - My love from 80mm f5 to apo to giant achromats. - 80% or more of my observing is not the 5 objects that show color, Moon, M, V, J, S - Binoculars, budget 80mm/102mm ED refractors, lower-cost eyepieces, mounts and so forth. - Wide Field Objects to Observe: Multiple objects in the same field, whether it's just the Moon and a planet in binoculars or the Sword of Orion in winter or the Lagoon & Trifid regions and star clouds of summer, Kemble's Cascade and NGC 1502.   Patreon support thank you's to Leonid, Matt, Joseph and Ernest   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can!
