When a team of WAHN University students entered the 2026 Bank of America Affordable Housing Challenge, they weren't just designing housing—they were reimagining community recovery. In this episode of WAHNcast, host Angie Truitt is joined by student team members Emily Jessup and Mia Spero, developer partners Leslie Weiss and Monte Heaton of Highridge Costa, and faculty advisor Mark Shelburne to discuss the award-winning proposal that earned WAHN U first place in the competition. Tasked with redeveloping the Front Street Apartments lost in the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires, the team created a vision for Lahaina that balanced affordability, cultural preservation, resiliency, and long-term community rebuilding. The conversation explores affordable housing as a career path, the realities of post-disaster redevelopment, the value of mentorship, and the lessons learned from tackling a real-world development challenge. Along the way, Emily and Mia share what it was like to compete on a national stage, work alongside industry professionals, and discover just how many people and disciplines come together to make affordable housing possible. Whether you're a student exploring the industry or a seasoned professional passionate about housing solutions, this episode offers an inspiring look at the next generation of affordable housing leaders.
In this episode of CounterPunch Radio, Rebecca Maria Goldschmidt speaks with Dr. Nadine Ortega, co-founder of Tagnawa Hawai’i, about grassroots mutual aid disaster recovery. Dr. Ortega breaks down the socio-economic and historical conditions that have led to the recent Kona Low flooding on O’ahu and the 2023 Lahaina, Maui fires, which have disproportionately affected Native Hawaiian, Filipino, and other immigrant communities. She shares stories about the importance of cross-class and interethnic organizing when state-run disaster response fails. Visit Tagnawa.org for more information. While the Red Cross is known primarily for blood drives and disaster relief, some of its most important work keeps people out of the hospital. The Home Fires Campaign has installed more than 3 million smoke alarms in homes across the country, saving thousands of lives. Emergency and disaster preparedness campaigns help communities ready themselves for weather related disasters. And CPR and First Aid training are critical to providing care at the moment people in crisis need it.rnrnMike Parks has been leading the Northern Ohio Region since 2015, after he retired as Rear Admiral from the U.S Coast Guard. In his role, Parks oversees five American Red Cross Chapters covering 31 Northern Ohio counties, serving 5.3 million people. In addition, he is frequently called on to lead disaster relief efforts, deploying for weeks to Maui to respond to the Lahaina fires, and to North Carolina after the flash floods from Hurricane Helene.rnrnJoin us for the next forum in the City Club's Local Heroes series, as we hear about the organization keeping blood in the blood banks, and our communities and neighbors safe from disaster.

What if surfboard waste could actually become the construction blocks of the homes we live in?David Sellers didn't always believe climate change would be something he'd feel in his own lifetime. As an architect in Hawaii, he'd spent years thinking about sustainability as a future problem… Until one moment changed everything.Standing in the ashes of Lahaina after the fires - David realized something that most architects never fully confront… That they're not just designing individual homes… they're shaping entire communities, entire systems… and ultimately, the future. That moment forced him to rethink his role as an architect and led to the creation of Hawaii Off Grid - a company designing fully self-sufficient homes powered by renewable energy, built to operate independently from traditional systems. But what makes David's work different is how far he's willing to go - turning surfboard waste and construction trash into construction blocks, creating a circular system where one house quite literally becomes the next.Because for him, this isn't just about sustainability. It's about redesigning how we live - from the ground up.To explore more about David Sellers and his work, you can follow him on Linkedin, Instagram @hawaiioffgrid, or visit his website hawaiioffgrid.com. Temporary housing is a major issue across Maui, especially for residents trying to rebuild after the Lahaina fires. Maui County has expanded how it handles building permits for temporary dwellings, and created a new way to calculate water usage. Starting January 1, 2026, anyone applying for a building permit or new or additional water service must use a new water-use calculation method that estimates daily demand instead of just counting plumbing fixtures, which will change how meter sizes and impact fees are determined. There's a third tool that Maui agricultural landowners can use the agricultural exemption under HRS 46-88 for qualifying non-dwelling farm buildings, with required details, to avoid a full building permit. Today's episode explains the trifecta: temporary building permits, the new water usage form, and agriculture exemptions.
In this episode of the Crisis Lab Podcast, host Kyle King opens with a scenario every emergency manager recognizes: an evacuation order goes out, every protocol is followed, every system is activated, and people don't move. What it reveals: trust is invisible infrastructure, and it fails the same way physical systems do.From Winter Storm URI in Texas to the Lahaina wildfire in Hawaii to Berlin's longest blackout since 1945, the pattern repeats. Policy trades resilience for efficiency, warnings go unheeded, systems fail, and public confidence collapses at every level of government. The gap between what institutions promise and what communities receive has become a structural vulnerability. This episode isn't a call for better messaging. It's a call to treat trust like what it is: critical infrastructure that requires assessment, maintenance, and investment. Send me a messageWhat if the biggest mistake in climate action is that we're still designing buildings for a climate that no longer exists? In this episode of the Climate Confident Podcast, I'm joined by David Sellers, principal architect at Hawaii Offgrid Architecture & Engineering. David designs net-zero and off-grid buildings on Maui, not as an experiment, but because the climate he's designing for is already shifting. Faster than most regulations, models, or assumptions can keep up.Buildings account for a huge share of global emissions, energy demand, and climate risk. Get the design wrong today, and we lock in higher emissions, higher costs, and lower resilience for decades. This conversation is about how to stop doing that.We dig into why designing with historical climate data is quietly undermining net zero goals, and why buildings completed today will spend most of their lives in a climate no human has experienced before. David explains how shifting wind patterns, rising temperatures, water scarcity, and fire risk are already breaking “best practice” design rules. You'll hear why off-grid no longer means uncomfortable or compromised, and how advances in solar, batteries, heat pumps, and building envelopes have changed the economics completely. We also talk about fire-resistant construction after the Lahaina fires, reusing waste surfboard foam to create ultra-insulated building blocks, and why resilience that only the wealthy can afford isn't resilience at all. This is a grounded, experience-driven look at climate tech, decarbonisation, and the energy transition, without the fantasy timelines or glossy nonsense.

This recording is part of Hui Mo‘olelo: Lahaina, our 2025–2026 gathering of richly detailed talk-story recordings created to inform future public artwork, support collective healing, and provide trusted, community-informed guidance for the Lahaina Memorial Project. Here, public art administrator Kelly McHugh-White sits down with Lahaina native Rae Kahaialiʻi to reflect on the vision and responsibility of memorializing the devastating Maui wildfires. Grounded in an initial consultation with Nā Kūpuna o Lahaina, who have emphasized that the Memorial must be a place of remembering and not recreation, and must be led by the land and informed by direct engagement with families, the dialogue explores how a memorial can honor those who perished while acknowledging the unrecorded grief carried by the wider community. Together, they consider how a memorial might move beyond monumentality to become a space of humility, inclusion, and shared healing that resists division and supports Lahaina's collective identity as the community shapes the next chapter of its history with care for future generations.

In this conversation, Dr. Stanton Hom sits down with Mark Burr of Primary Water Technologies, a global operator helping landowners and communities tap into deep, earth-generated water sources. Mark shares his incredible journey from international business and Wall Street fundraising into the hidden world of "primary water" — water created within the earth and rising from deep rock, not just recycled rain. They unpack the history of primary water pioneers like Stephen Reese and Paul Power, how political and corporate interests shaped the "water scarcity" narrative, and why so much of our water law is built to control, not liberate, this resource. The episode weaves together geology, health, sovereignty, and an abundance mindset that challenges everything you've been told about drought and "running out" of water. Highlights: "The Earth creates water. It's there in abundance. If that's true, it has enormous implications." "You and I can't wake up and say, 'I don't like my water, I'll go to the Verizon of water.' You have your monopoly, and they'll charge you 12% more every year." "Scarcity is one of the most viral belief systems destroying humanity and nature. Primary water is a literal wellspring of abundance under our feet." "Ninety percent of the time we're getting water out of the ground, and 80% of that you can drink without filtration." Courtenay Turner & Dr. Lee Merritt Decode the Anomalies No One Wants You to Notice Last night's no-guest livestream of Dangerous Dames was pure, unfiltered speculation — the kind of show where the Dames just sit down with a stack of weird headlines and start connecting dots until the picture gets very uncomfortable. Here's what we unpacked (and why none of it feels like coincidence): Bear Attacks Are Suddenly Everywhere Japan just recorded its deadliest year ever for bear fatalities. North America is seeing grizzlies and black bears wandering into cities and attacking in places they never used to. Official explanation? “Climate change made them hungry.” Dr. Merritt: “Bears don't read climate reports. Something is driving them out of their normal patterns — and it's happening at the same time we're seeing…” Puncture Wounds That Don't Match Any Known Animal Otter bites, “human” bites, and bizarre puncture patterns showing up in ERs across the U.S. — including the same photo of the same two men used in stories from Omaha and Pennsylvania. The Dames pointed to the Idaho student murders (unexplained puncture wounds on the bodies) and the growing number of “chewed-up” corpses found in Houston reservoirs. Theory on the table: something predatory, non-human, and very old is being disturbed — or released. Sinkholes Swallowing Cities Overnight Seoul, Florida, the UK — massive, perfectly round sinkholes opening with no warning. Some so deep rescue teams can't reach the bottom. The official line is “erratic weather.” The Dames aren't buying it. When sinkholes start appearing near particle accelerators and 5G/6G test zones, it's time to ask what's vibrating under our feet. Fires That Burn the Wrong Things Houses torched to ash while trees ten feet away are untouched. Blue roofs spared. Metal rims melted, plastic toys intact. Same pattern we saw in Lahaina and Paradise. Directed-energy weapons? Frequency resonance? Whatever it is, it's selective — and it's spreading. Predictive Programming in Children's Books Courtney shared her childhood favorite, Wacky Wednesday (1974), where everything is upside down and backwards — and everyone insists it's normal. Sound familiar? Then we went down the rabbit hole of A Wrinkle in Time, The Forgotten Door, and the tesseract symbolism showing up everywhere from CERN to children's literature. Message: They've been telling us for decades that reality is about to flip. The Darwin Fraud That Won't Die Dr. Merritt dropped a bombshell: Darwin's famous “Tree of Life” notebook — the only one that mattered — went missing for 20 years and came back with drawings that match modern genetics… which didn't exist in 1835. The entire theory of evolution may be the longest-running scientific psyop in history. The Real War Is Metaphysical From subterranean creatures to time-distortion anomalies to the push for transhuman “upgrades,” the Dames concluded: “They want you terrified of nature, addicted to pharma, and begging for AI to save you — because the moment you remember you're made in God's image, their game is over.” The full episode is too hot for YouTube (of course). Despite Israel's war with Hamas and Iran, its economy grew, if modestly, due mostly to its strong tech sector. But calls to boycott Israel over the conduct of its war in Gaza appear to have hit some exports. Will that rage subside if the ceasefire holds? Also: today's stories, including how, after the deadliest fire in 100 years of U.S. history, people of Lahaina are trying to rebuild their buildings and culture; how girls marrying before age 18 was prohibited in Bolivia this year, but the cultural norms and attitudes that drive the practice remain; and how President Donald Trump is pressuring cities and states to end cashless bail. Join the Monitor's Ira Porter for today's news.
One of the deadliest wildfires in US history decimated the town of Lahaina, Hawaii, in August 2023, killing ninety-nine people and destroying more than two thousand buildings. Still reeling from the devastation, residents experienced additional trauma when some looters pillaged buildings and greedy realtors attempted to gobble up land. The corrupt desire to take advantage of tragic circumstances is the backdrop of a strong message from God to the nation of Edom. The prophet Obadiah warned the Edomites, Israel’s enemies for generations (Ezekiel 35:5), of God’s coming justice because the Edomites used their geographic advantage (Obadiah 1:3), acquired wealth (v. 6), alliances with other nations (v. 7), wisdom (v. 8) and military strength (v. 9) to exploit the weak. Obadiah also rebuked the way Edom gloated as Israel was sent into captivity. Instead of compassion, Edom looted Israelite homes and marched through defeated cities in victory (vv. 12-13). Although Lahaina residents saw despicable actions, they also experienced kindness when churches on the island became hospitality centers offering shelter, hot meals, and emergency supplies. When someone is suffering, we face a similar choice. We can try to benefit from their loss. Or we can respond in the way God desires, like the churches in Lahaina, with kindness and generosity.

These experiences fueled a fascination with self-sufficient systems, inspired by observing the integrated mechanics of boats. This led him to Hawaii, where high energy costs and resource constraints created the perfect environment to build a multidisciplinary practice focused on net-zero and off-grid projects. His firm, Hawaii Off-Grid, now mandates that all new buildings be at least net-zero, driven by both environmental values and a compelling economic proposition for clients. The conversation also dives into Surf Block, a startup born from observing the sheer volume of surfboard foam waste filling local landfills. Inspired by insulated composite concrete forms (ICCFs), David saw an opportunity to turn this waste into a high-performance, resilient building material - resistant to hurricanes, mold, mildew, and termites - perfectly suited for Hawaii's climate and challenges. Now, Surf Block is playing a crucial role in the rebuilding efforts in Lahaina. David's hope is that his work inspires others to find similar opportunities in their own backyards. “Necessity - that's been the story of my life ever since. And I think that part of our architecture practice is rooted in necessity. There's a necessity for us to have climate responsive design, because we're seeing a shift in vernacular architecture.” - David SellersThis episode concludes with a powerful reminder that innovation often stems from constraints and necessity. David's story showcases how diverse experiences outside traditional architecture can enrich design thinking and lead to ventures with profound environmental and community impact. He demonstrates that architects' next frontier may lie not in grand scale, but in developing intelligent, self-sufficient systems that respond directly to the unique challenges of their place, ultimately inspiring others to find and create value in unexpected ways.GuestDavid Sellers is the founder of Hawaii Off-Grid Architecture and Engineering and the co-founder of Surf Block. With an unconventional background that includes working as a mechanic, on fishing boats, and studying architecture internationally, David brings a unique systems-thinking approach to sustainable design. His practice in Hawaii focuses on net-zero, off-grid, and climate-responsive projects driven by the unique environmental and economic necessities of the islands. Through Surf Block, he is pioneering the use of recycled surfboard foam waste to create innovative, resilient building materials for communities like Lahaina. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if:✅ You are interested in off-grid, net-zero, and sustainable design practices. ✅ You believe necessity and constraints can be powerful drivers of innovation.✅ You are inspired by unconventional career paths within and beyond architecture. ✅ You want to learn about innovative approaches to waste stream utilization and sustainable materials. ✅ You are looking for examples of architecture practices with a strong quadruple bottom line focus (community, environment, global impact, career progress).

Chase Thacker, a leader whose passion for people supercharges everything from freight and shipping to family and faith. Chase recounts the rapid “Mission to Maui” response after the August 2023 Lahaina fires, mobilizing containers of water, generators, Starlinks, and medical supplies, showing what servant leadership looks like when the stakes are high. He traces his unexpected path into logistics, the customer-service roots that drive his work, and a bold family move to Houston to seize a new sales opportunity. Along the way, Chase unpacks building teams through love and loyalty, navigating acquisitions, and the simple mandate on his desk: leaders make leaders. We also go deep on the man behind the metrics: habit stacking and morning activations on Camelback, a dramatic health reset through fasting, thoughtful guardrails around alcohol in a high-pressure industry, and a “travel-ready” fitness routine that needs zero equipment. Through the lens of Fathered by God (boy, cowboy, warrior, lover, king, sage), Chase identifies himself in the warrior season, pursuing excellence at work while protecting and serving at home. He shares practical fatherhood lessons, nurturing a strong will in his daughter and emotional intelligence in his son, and how presence in the small moments adds up to a legacy. In this interview, co-hosts Melissa Chimera, Clay Trauernicht and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa art professor Dr. Jaimey Faris explore how their respective fields in art and science critically examine the social and political paradigms that separate humans from each other and the world around us. They trade perspectives on what a sustainable and a thriving future might look like for all living beings—as manifested in the present day struggles for indigenous sovereignty and liberation from Lahaina to Papua New Guinea and Palestine. Clay and Jaimey talk about their respective upbringings in California and New York amidst economic and social class disparities and how that led them to engage with the underrepresented from all over the world—from kanaka maoli in Hawaiʻi striving for access to water to Mexican women manufacturing goods—via their respective fields of fire science and art.
The Other Side of Midnight with Lionel offers a different way of thinking that challenges conventional news and headlines, which Lionel states he does not believe. The show delivers stories and questions "you ain't going to hear anybody talk about" by exploring the psychology of news and mind control, examining persuasion techniques (citing Amway and motivational speakers), and dissecting topics where mainstream narratives are questioned: these include controversial social issues like conversion therapy for minors and the nature of sexual identity, legal and political critiques (such as the James Comey perjury charges and the erratic behavior of figures like Katie Porter and Kamala Harris), the psychological control exerted in predatory relationships where men like Bill Bellichick and Alec Baldwin are "whipped", and deep-dive analysis into suspicious events such as the Palisades and Lahaina wildfires, including theories involving directed energy weapons (DEW) and sabotage efforts by Russian and Chinese forces. By fostering suspicion and a fertile imagination (fecundity), Lionel provides the context needed so you "never have to wonder what the heck is going on here" Learn more about your ad choices. On this Alfacast we take you deeper into the orchestrated "land grab" by those who conquer populations through displacement. This centuries-old method of conquest by either overt force or stealth has not spared any racial group or geographical coordinate. For the predator class, it's nothing personal, just business. In the modern era of U.S. INC, land was deceptively stolen via the issuing of 'warranty deeds' to transfer alloidial title as recognized through original land grants and patents to absolute State control. If any doubt lingers about this blatant theft just stop paying your property tax, and see what happens. The corporatized State has now integrated acts of mass violence to outrun the 'great awakening' that is quickly narrowing the window of opportunity for full spectrum dominance. The purposeful degradation of financial systems, arson, weather modification and biological false flags are the favored weaponry, while lending a measure of plausible deniability. Look at Santa Rosa, Paradise, North Carolina and Maui for just a sampling of the more obvious "natural disasters". Maui resident and freedom activist , Michelle Melendez, joins us to continue the 'land grab' discussion thread initiated in a prior Alfacast interview featuring Tracy Derwin & Shane Buell. Michelle started her freedom activist journey April 2020 when the narrative on mainstream media was not sharing the truth when it came to 'invisible terrorists'. During the "pandemic" debacle she hosted a health summit, refused donning facial diapers, sent petitions to police stations and lodged formal complains against the Hawaii police chief who subsequently retired 3 months later! Michelle was one of the first to speak out against the mainstream media in the aftermath of the Lahaina fire, while interviewing experts sharing the truth that this was NOT a “wildfire”, but something much more nefarious! Michelle wrote the book, “Great Maui Land Grab: What caused the Maui fire and is your home next?” It is up for many book awards and may even get book of the year! Michelle is a firm believer that this is a spiritual game/war that is being played at human expense and it's up to each living soul to make a choice! Will you ignore the evil in the world and comply, or will you stand up for God and good and do your part, no matter how small? One thing for certain, Michele is our kind of Gal, so please help us share her knowledge far & wide. TAKEAWAYSMichelle contends that there are too many details about the Maui fires that don't line upMedia wasn't allowed in for 30 days, homeowners weren't allowed back for 90 days, no fly zone, 5 mile long dust screen was addedBodies burn from the outside-in during a natural fire, not the inside-out as in Maui, which would lead to a possible DEW involvementBlue objects in Lahaina and LA didn't burn - another indicator DEWs were used and people were threatened with arrest if they took photos
TAKEAWAYSFederal land grabs are usually done under the guise of “national security”There has never been a final accounting of how many people actually died in the Maui firesThere are anomalous factors in both Lahaina and Los Angeles that suggest there could have been a pre-planned element to the disastersThe Constitution does not victimize anyone - people ignoring the Constitution are responsible for that
