Making a Scene Presents an interview with Eric HughesEric Hughes has been called a “guaranteed crowd-pleaser” by Living Blues Magazine; his enthusiasm for Memphis music, and his authenticity, are obvious.Hughes was born and raised in Memphis and spent his weekends in Mississippi, where he came to cherish blues music. After a couple of years at Mississippi College, Hughes joined the Marines, and found himself stationed far from home. Hughes bought a guitar, hoping that learning some blues might ease his homesickness. That guitar did more than that. A decade of learning followed, traveling and learning from various bluesmen. Eric first began performing in the clubs on Beale Street in 2001, where he continues to play several nights a week as a solo entertainer, with a duo, or in front of the Eric Hughes Band. Hughes was recently awarded a Muddy Mojo Award, won “Best Self-Produced CD” by Memphis Blues Society, and recorded the “Coolest Blues Song of 2013” by Big City Blues Magazine.Eric Hughes Band,Somewhere,Postcard From Beale StreetEric Hughes Band,07 Blackberry Patch,Postcard From Beale Streetwww.makingascene.org,Eric Hughes,Eric Hughes Band,05 Homesick Angel,Postcard From Beale StreetEric Hughes Band,08 Come See About Me,Postcard From Beale Street
What does Dolomite, Lawanda Page, Scatman Crothers, Sam Cooke Pee Wee Crayton, T- Bone Walker, Johnny Lee Hooker, Bill Brown, Clyde McPhatter, Charlie White, and King Records have in common with Central Avenue? The answer is, John Dolphin and his owner-operated open 24/7 record shop rightfully named "Dolphin's of Hollywood." Bringing Hollywood to Central Avenue, John Dolphin cut records in the back of his store, then broke the record on his radio station that broadcasted in the front window of his store. John's efforts platformed black music and artists who wouldn't have had a chance to be heard on a large level. It also broke the color barriers as his record store had Black, White and Chicano patrons who partied together in and around the record store. On this episode, I speak with Michael Dolphin, John Dolphin's son, and Jamelle Dolphin, John Dolphin's grandson and author of the book "Dolphin's of Hollywood" about the legacy and impact John Dolphin created and had on the music, record, radio and Black Business industry. You can also read my article, "Charting The Blues" which is a 9-page feature in Living Blues Magazine, that discusses how John changed the trajectory of the radio industry and pop charts. Willie’s first recording was a local production with Alabama bluesman “Birmingham” George Conner, titled Walkin’ the Walk, Talkin’ the Talk. This CD created an unexpected amount of interest, and promoted reviewer Gordon Baxter to state, “No label, no catalog number, and definitely no doubt about it, Walkin’ The Walk Talkin’ The Talk will feature in my top 10 albums of 2000.” I Am the Blues, Willie’s next CD, was a solo project, produced by Willie King in collaboration with the Alabama Blues Project. Again, despite being independently produced and initially only locally distribute, this album gained a lot of critical acclaim. This CD was a “Top 10 Album of 2000” for Niles Frantz, host to Chicago Public Radio’s Comin’ Home program. He described it as “Howlin’ Wolf meets B.B. King in the Alabama backwoods. The real deal . . . brilliant.” Jim O’Neal eventually caught up with Willie King to record Freedom Creek, Willie King’s debut album on Rooster Blues Records. With international distribution, this was King’s powerful introduction into the wider music and blues world. Not only was the album acclaimed by critics worldwide, it also received awards from Living Blues Magazine for Best Male Blues Artist (2001), Best Blues Album (2000) and Best Contemporary Blues Album (2000). http://www.willie-king.com/
