On the Saturday October 4, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet Paul Myers is a Canadian writer and musician living in Berkeley, California. He’s written extensively about music, including books like the critically acclaimed “A Wizard a True Star: Todd Rundgren in the Studio;” “It Ain’t Easy: Long John Baldry and the Birth of the British Blues;” and “Barenaked Ladies: Public Stunts, Private Stories.” If you’re a comedy fan, you may have read “The Kids in the Hall: One Dumb Guy,” which was the source for the Canadian Screen Award-winning documentary “The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks from Amazon Studios.” His latest book, available now wherever you buy fine books, is “John Candy: A Life in Comedy.” Then, actor musician Donna Garner stops by. Her company Garner Theatre Productions is currently working with Mirvish Productions, on a staging of the Tony-nominated “Bright Star,” a musical, set in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, it tells a story of love and redemption inspired by the Iron Mountain Baby story. The bluegrass score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell will be performed by an all-Canadian cast. Finally, Sloan is one of Canada’s most enduring and influential rock bands, blending infectious power pop with sharp alternative rock since 1991. Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, the band—Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland, Jay Ferguson, and Andrew Scott—stands apart for their rare, democratic approach, with all four members writing and singing. Their landmark album Twice Removed is consistently ranked among the greatest Canadian records, and their catalog of hook-laden anthems and harmonies has earned them critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase worldwide. With an unstoppable live show and decades of hits, Sloan continues to define and defy the sound of modern rock. Today the band’s guitarist Jay Ferguson joins me to talk about their fourteenth studio album, “Based on the Best Seller,” which is available now wherever you buy fine music.

"Sex, drugs, and rock‘n roll" - Kaum eine Band verkörpert dieses Lebensmotto mehr als erstaunlicherweise die britische Band "Fleetwood Mac". In 1966, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker left their previous projects to form Cream, rock's first supergroup and a defining force in Britain's ‘Electric Blues Rock' movement. Their debut album, ‘Fresh Cream', was the starting point for this power trio - revolutionising British Blues by elevating the electric guitar's role, blending Hard Rock, Psychedelia, and Jazz and setting a high standard for Blues-inspired musicians seeking their own unique sound. Comprising the Brothers Kinnon (Chris on vocals and guitar; Jeff on drums), riff-master Sean Casey (guitar), and classically educated bass player Enzo Figliuzzi, the Canadian/California-based band has played with everybody from garage legends like the Dirtbombs to arena stars Kings of Leon, making SXSW best-of lists numerous times, and in between hanging out with the Rolling Stones' legendary manager Andrew Loog Oldham. But putting integrity first had a cost: obscurity. Lions in the Street began their career by signing and then walking away from the troubled TVT Records (NIN, Pitbull, Little Jon), Nickelback's 604 Records (Carly Rae Jepson), and legendary manager Allen Kovac (Motley Crue, The Cars, Blondie, The Bee Gees), earning them a spot on the music industry's blacklist. Years in the wilderness resulted—working as a garbageman for almost a decade, surviving cancer, serious workplace injuries, and almost deadly car accidents, and going back to school. Yet, despite experiencing the best and worst of the of old music business—from hanging out with Todd Rundgren, Bob Ezrin, and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, to seeing an A&R guy almost fired just for going to see them play—the band somehow kept going, releasing music piecemeal. For example, Lions in the Street released an EP in 2013 on British legend Sandy Roberton's label. Roberton ran Blue Horizon, the English label that launched the 60s British Blues rock movement with John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, and Rory Gallagher. Now the streaming platforms revolution has given Lions in the Street a new life an audience, allowing them to release largely-unheard music—finally finished and remixed/remastered. – ROGER EARL –Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime' fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively. In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n' roll history.Moving from England to the North Shore of Long Island in 1973, the band settled around the Port Jefferson area since their manager lived there. Roger loved the area and being an avid fisherman, especially enjoyed the fishing.During the 70's Foghat had a series of hit records such as “I Just Want to Make Love to You”, “Fool for the City”, “Slow Ride”, “Stone Blue”, “Drivin' Wheel”, “Third Time Lucky” and more. They were known as the hardest working band in Rock n' Roll since they toured 10 out of 12 months during this period.FOGHAT has a new album out called SONIC MOJO! https://foghat.comhttps://foghat.com/tour
Eddie Martin joins me on episode 106.Eddie has been described as the ambassador of British Blues, having released seventeen albums over his near fifty year career, with many of the songs self-penned by Eddie. He started out as a one-man band, but also performs as part of his own bands too. In either format Eddie makes extensive use of rack harmonica, and is one of the leading players of using a rack, while also playing some hand-held harmonica as well. Eddie gives us some great tips on playing on the rack. Eddie also had a two year spell in the US where he regularly played on Beale St, Memphis and Clarksdale, Mississippi, as well as time playing in Italy. And he regularly teaches at workshops in the UK and Europe.Links:Eddie's website:http://eddiemartin.comBig Red Radio:https://soundcloud.com/eddie-martin/sets/eddie-martins-big-red-radioHarmonica Master's Workshop:https://www.harmonica-masters.de/en/workshops-2024/master-workshops-diatonic/eddie-martin.htmlEuroBlues week:https://www.euroblues.co.uk/blues-week-2024/Son of Dave interview:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.com/son-of-dave-interview/Videos:One Man Band video from Thirst album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK6Qr9nSugw&t=18sBirdcage Sessions video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU87CViwfJAHarpin' By The Sea 2024: Breakeven Blues:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S83O-scnX_IHarpin' By The Sea 2024: Early In The Morning:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fuwgMcaJ4QNHL festival 2006: Queen of Spades:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW-Y9JplJ4wPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICASANDThe Harmonica Company. A man who has been on the UK cattle showing scene for a long while, large as life Jason Wareham chats about the family farm shop business, his and his wife Sarah's successful journey with Galloway cattle and their herd of British Blues. Add in some pedigree sheep, an abattoir, a haulage business, as well as a busy judging schedule and you can understand why it took me while to track Jason down to speak to me on Toplines and Tales!
Legs got to chat with British Blues legend Connie Lush a few years ago, just prior to her performance at The Nantwich Jazz, Blues & Music Festival. Here's your chance to catch up, in case you missed the original broadast.
Blues great singer and songwriter, Sari Schorr, talks with The Trout about her musical journey and her collaboration with Robin Trower on his new album, Joyful Sky.A voice of breathtaking quality and power and a live show that erupts like a volcano have catapulted Sari Schorr into the spotlight as the new undisputed star of Blues Rock.In 2016, Sari first burst onto the Blues-Rock scene with her critically acclaimed debut album, A Force of Nature, produced by iconic British Blues pioneer Mike Vernon (David Bowie, Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green).Sari broke new ground with her sophomore album, Never Say Never. Sari insisted that the album be recorded live to capture the raw energy of her music. She has ventured deeper into her personal life. In the process, Sari has revealed herself with a vulnerability and honesty that she admits was as painful as it was healing. Her songs are highly crafted with vibrant lyrics that highlight just how good Sari is at invoking passion, grit, and empathy.Sari's success comes after years trudging the rugged road of life of the hard-working Blues woman. From her humble beginnings, working the music scene in the legendary fierce South Bronx of New York and on Manhattan's Lower East Side, to a performance at Carnegie Hall, the operatically trained tornado stood her ground as a phenomenal Blues-Rock singer who would not be denied.Sari's home is her suitcase and her path has always taken her on the road less traveled. Her life is a story of never giving up, being true to yourself and pursuing your passions against all odds. It's a story that is incredibly inspirational and a reminder why we should Never Say Never!https://www.sarischorr.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/
In the heart of the ‘Swinging Sixties', a British rock band called Savoy Brown was born and almost immediately began to make a profound impact with their pioneering blues-rock sound. Energetic Blues has always been Savoy Brown's calling card. In fact, Blues Rock became the catch-all phrase in the late 1960s to describe the band's music along with that of contemporaries including Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Jimi Hendrix. Even though the band was plagued with a constantly changing line-up, the group's guiding hand from the outset in 1966 was held by its founder, the late Kim Simmonds. Unfortunately, Savoy Brown never reached the same level of commercial success as their contemporaries but despite this, they were a huge influence on the blues-rock genre, which led to their long-standing legacy in the industry. The band's discography is a testament to their enduring influence. Albums like "Shake Down," "Blue Matter," and "Street Corner Talking" showcased the band's exceptional song writing and instrumentals. Through the 60s, 70s and 80's songs such as “I'm Tired”, “Train to Nowhere”, “Tell Mama” and “Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone” became Hot 100 entries. Savoy Brown has always toured relentlessly, making it one of the longest running blues rock bands in existence. They also provided other groups opportunity. Kiss opened the bill on a Savoy Brown national tour as did ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers and many, many more acts. Former members, having cut their teeth under Simmonds' leadership, have gone on to complete their careers with other bands. Among others, these include singer Dave Walker with Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath, Bill Bruford with King Crimson and Andy Pyle with the Kinks. Savoy Brown helped spawn the 1968 UK Blues Rock boom and later opened the eyes of many 1970s American teenagers to their own home territory blues artists. Today, more than 50 years later, Savoy Brown remains a formidable, progressive Blues Rock force. As the band continues today without its leader, Kim Simmonds, who passed away late last year, it is led by my special guests – bassist PAT DESALVO and drummer GARNET GRIMM. Both have been in the line-up for more than 10 years. I hope you enjoy the amazing story that is SAVOY BROWN's musical journey. To learn more about the band head to their website https://savoybrown.com/biography Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like to comment, provide feedback or suggest a future guest for the show. My great friend and real 'character' Jan Green has a birthday today, so it was fantastic to catch up with her to talk about the early days in the British Blues, hers and John's leap of faith move to North Scotland and their successes ever since. Some great craic and reminisces on this one, even with John in the background!
This vinyl mix Danny pays tribute to the late singer songwriter Christine McVie with music by Stevie Nicks, Cocteau Twins, Modern English, and more. Christine Anne McVie (/məkˈviː/;[1] née Perfect; 12 July 1943 – 30 November 2022) was an English musician and songwriter. She was principally known as a vocalist and keyboardist with the band Fleetwood Mac.A member of several bands on the mid-1960s British Blues scene, notably Chicken Shack, she began playing with Fleetwood Mac in 1968, initially as a contract session player, before formally joining the band in 1970. She started to emerge as a songwriter by 1971, with her first compositions appearing on her fourth album with the group, Future Games. She would remain with the band through many lineup changes for the next several decades, generally writing and performing lead vocals on about half of the tracks on all of their subsequent studio albums (though she had partially retired in 1998, and only appeared as a session musician on the band's last studio album, Say You Will. She also released three solo studio albums. Steve Leggett of AllMusic described her as an "unabashedly easy-on-the-ears singer/songwriter, and the prime mover behind some of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits". Eight songs written or co-written by her, including "Don't Stop", "Everywhere", and "Little Lies", appeared on Fleetwood Mac's 1988 Greatest Hits album. As a member of Fleetwood Mac, McVie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1998. The same year, after almost 30 years with the band, she opted to leave and lived in semi-retirement for nearly 15 years. She released a solo album in 2004. She appeared on stage with Fleetwood Mac at the O2 Arena in London in September 2013, before rejoining the band in 2014 prior to their On with the Show tour.McVie received a Gold Badge of Merit Award from BASCA, now The Ivors Academy, in 2006.[9] She received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in 2014 and was honoured with the Trailblazer Award at the UK Americana Awards in 2021. She was also the recipient of two Grammy Awards.

Some songs call for you to speak out & demand action. Some songs explore the deepest depths of your soul. Some songs are timeless expressions of love. This song... it just kicks ass. Humble Pie was a guitar riff machine, and Steve Marriott was 5' 5" of vocal dynamite. There's never been any shortage of drama with Fleetwood Mac... long before the soap opera of Rumours, there was the psychodrama of Peter Green (and Jeremy Spencer, and Danny Kirwan...). The saga of how Peter Green-- one of the brightest guitarists to come out of '60's Britain, right up there with Clapton/Beck/Page-- was lost to a drug-fueled spiritual black hole is one of the great "if only..." tales in Rock History. When he passed away in July 2020, I knew it was time to tackle a Green-era Mac classic... I just had to gin up the courage to revisit the nightmare that awaits in "The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Prong Crown)""The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Prong Crown" (Peter Green) Copyright 1970 Palan Music Publishing Ltd.-- This show is one of the many great podcasts on the Pantheon Podcasts network.
